Girls Basketball
Attleboro, 44 vs. Cumberland, 24 – Final – Attleboro bounced back from last night’s loss with a strong defensive performance to earn its first win of the season. Mackenzie Roberts had 11 points to lead the Bombardiers, Liv McCall scored nine, and Jordyn Lako had eight points and 11 rebounds. Attleboro coach Marty Crowley added that senior Dom Garnes gave the Bombardiers great defense off the bench.
Boys Hockey
Canton, 7 vs. Plymouth South, 2 – Final – Canton senior Ryan Nolte scored a hat trick and junior Chris Lavoie found the back of the net twice as Canton opened its season with a win over Plymouth South. The Bulldogs will play Plymouth North in the final of the Jim Gormley Cup on Saturday at 4:00 at Gallo.
Foxboro, 6 vs. Tri-County, 0 – Final
Mansfield, 4 vs. Walpole, 1 – Final – Mansfield built a 2-0 lead after the first period, extended it to 3-1 in the second, and added an insurance goal in the third to pick up its second win of the season. The Hornets had four different goal scorers with Matt Copponi, Brad Grant, Jack Garland, and Ben Ierardo each lighting the lamp. Copponi, Grant, and Austin Ricker each had assists. The Hornets cashed in twice on the power play and went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Stoughton, 1 vs. Cardinal Spellman, 5 – Final – Carter Gerome scored the lone goal in the Black Knights’ season-opener.
Girls Hockey
Canton, 4 vs. Plymouth South, 0 – Final – Maggie Malloy scored a pair of goals and added an assist as Canton improved to 2-0 on the season. Ava Pacitti made 11 saves in net to earn the shutout.
Franklin, 4 vs. Medway, 3 – Final – Cassi Ronan scored a pair of goals and Regan Paterson and Libby Carter each tallied once to lift the Panthers to a season-opening win.

North Attleboro, 27 @ Mansfield, 45 – Final – Click here for a photo gallery from this match. – Mansfield showed off its strength, experience, and versatility in the middle weights to earn a non-league win against North Attleboro. The Hornets led 33-0 after starting the meet at 120 pounds. Antonios Sevastos earned a 10-3 win to start the Hornets off with four points and Andy Triantafilopoulos followed with a 17-2 win at 126. Steven Chase earned a pin at 132 and Stefan Steyn won 2-0 at 138. Will Stratton won at 145 and CJ and George Glaropoulos each followed with pins. Montrell Jackson got North’s first team points with a pin, coming back from 6-1 down in the first and 8-6 down in the third to make it 33-6. Jayden Curley answered back with a pin at 182, but North won three straight matches to cut into the lead. Liam Rizk won at 195 and then John Kummer (220), Mateusz Kudra (285), and Tanner Ferguson (106) had back-to-back-to-back pins. Max Farley closed the meet for the Hornets with a pin at 113.
Sharon, 69 @ Taunton, 12 – Final – The Eagles had 10 wrestlers win by pinfall to earn a win over Taunton. Adam Landstein (106), Ben Shocket (113), Amit Levin (120), Vinay Chinnam (126), Aaron Cashton (132), Kevin Simons (138), Tyler Cashton (145), Andrew Ableman (160), Jon Wald (182), and Alex Bolt (195) each earned a victory by fall for Sharon. Taunton’s Corey Abelard (220) and Mason Frank (285) each win by pinfall in under a minute.
Boys Swimming
Canton, 81 @ King Philip, 88 – Final – King Philip captains Tyler Stringfellow and Colby Vieira both had strong performances in the first meet of the season for the Warriors. Stringfellow won the 50 free while Vieira took first in the 100 fly and 10 backstroke. Cameron Stringfellow, John Dionis, and Dean Whyte added first place finishes, while Jackson Klein and Andrew Pham were consistent point scorers as well.

King Philip junior Tyler Stringfellow has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 28 through Feb. 3. Stringfellow is the 18th player selected for the 2017-18 school year and eighth player chosen during the winter season.
Stringfellow, a junior swimmer, put in an outstanding individual performance at this weekend’s Hockomock Swim Championships at Milford High and helped King Philip take third in the team standings, behind Franklin and Oliver Ames. Stringfellow won two individual titles, a relay title, and finished second in another relay to close out the day.
“Tyler is a very devoted swimmer who loves the sport with a passion,” said KP head coach Jack Pettine. “He dominates in most freestyle events but is even better as the distance gets longer. All season Tyler has practiced for numerous hours a day with our high school team in the mornings and then his club team at night, burning the candle at both ends. At sectionals and states, we look to have him do his best in both events he will be swimming.”
Along with Colby Vieira, Dean Whyte, and Tate Duffy, Stringfellow got KP off to a perfect start by winning the 200-yard Medley Relay by five seconds over second-place Franklin. He followed that with a win in the 200-Free by more than a second and a dominating swim in the 500-Free, which he won by nearly 15 seconds over his nearest competitor. Stringfellow joined with Whyte, Duffy, and Vieira to close out the meet with a second place finish in the 400-Free Relay, just .32 seconds behind the team from Oliver Ames.

Attleboro, 4 @ Bourne, 5 – Final – Attleboro senior Jake Parker scored a pair of goals to open the season but the Bombardiers suffered a setback on the road to Bourne. Ryan Morry and Zack Pierce also scored for Attleboro.
Franklin, 4 @ Saint Mary’s, 3 – Final– Franklin rallied from a 2-1 deficit with three goals in the final period to pick up a win over the defending D1 State Champions. Senior Luke Downie scored the tying goal to make it 2-2 shortly before Zac Falvey gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead. Matt Holmes tipped in a shot from Connor Norton with four minutes to play for the game-winner. Brendan O’Rielly had a first-period goal for Franklin.
Oliver Ames, 9 @ King Philip, 5 – Final – Oliver Ames junior Brett Williams and sophomore Hunter Costello both had tremendous offensive outputs in the Tigers’ debut. Both Williams and Costello recorded hat tricks and added two assists each to help OA open the season with a win over KP. Chris Crouch earned his first win in his first varsity start.

Canton, 5 vs. Ursuline Academy, 1 – Final – Canton freshman Ellie Rae Roberts scored a pair of goals in her varity debut to help the Bulldogs open the season in style, picking up a 5-1 win over visiting Ursuline.

Oliver Ames, 39 @ Canton, 33 – Final – Without one of their top grapplers, Oliver Ames was forced to make some adjustments. Both Jay Fruci and Dean Pacini bumped up a weight class and both came away with victories to help the Tigers edge Canton. Fruci picked up a major win at 195 while Pacini pinned his opponent at 220. Other winners for Oliver Ames included Remy Creighton (106, pin), Nick McGovern (113, major), Cobey Williamson (126, pin), Casey Bellevue (132, pin), Brandon Belleton (145, pin) and Billy Tat (182, major).
Milford, 27 @ Foxboro, 51 – Final – Foxboro’s Phil Dure won his 100th career match in the victory over visiting Milford. Dure picked up a third-round pin at 126 to earn the milestone victory.

Taunton, 21 @ Mansfield, 60 – Final – Taunton picked up four wins in the loss on the road at Mansfield. Candido Santos (160), Alex Simon (195), Woudanly Danger (22), and Mason Frank (285) each won for the Tigers.
Boys Swimming
King Philip, 111 @ Milford, 51 – Final – King Philip’s Colby Vieira came in first in four separate events, Tate Duffy and Dean Whyte each won three events and King Philip rolled to a win over Milford. The Warriors took first in all events with Jackson Klein and Derek Whyte each coming in first twice. Tyler Stringfellow anchored both the 200 medley and 200 free relay teams to wins. Vieira was apart of the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams and also took first in the 100 backstroke and the 500 free. Duffy won the 200 Free (2:02.72) and the 100 breaststroke as well as being apart of the 200 medley team along white Whyte, who was also apart of the 400 free relay and won the 100 butterfly. Jacob Desmond had a three second-place finishes for Milford (200 medley relay, 50 free and 100 breaststroke).

Girls Swimming
King Philip, 105 @ Milford, 65 – Final – King Philip’s Callie Sullivan placed first in three events and the Warriors took first in all but one race to open the season with a win. Sullivan won the 100 free and the 100 backstroke and was also the lead member of the winning 200 medley relay team. Sam Nasson, Sammy Dewitt, Megan Campbell, and Jess Sullivan also took first in three events – Nasson anchored the 400 free, won the 100 butterfly and was apart of the 200 medley team. Dewitt won two individual races, taking first in the 50 fee and the 500 free and Campbell won the 200 free and was a member of the 200 and 400 free relay teams with Jess Sullivan, who took first in the 200 IM. Milford’s Alexa Lancisi took second in both the 100 fly and 100 backstroke while Amber Stearns took first place in the 100 backstroke for the Hawks.

Gymnastics
King Philip, 131.15 @ Sharon, 125 – Final – King Philip swept the top three spots in the bar, helping the Warriors open the season with a win over Sharon. Sidney Treeful led the way for the Warriors, winning the all-around score with a 34.2, with first places in the bar (8.5), beam (8.7) and floor (8.7). Kailey Abbott (8.0) and Madeline Giesler (7.9) rounded out KP’s sweep of the bar. Sharon’s Ariana Chabot was second all-around with a 32.45, winning the vault (8.8) while placing second in the beam (8.45) and the floor (8.4).

MILFORD, Mass. – The King Philip boys swimming team had to share the dual meet title with Franklin and Taunton.
The Warriors weren’t going to share the Hockomock League Championship title with anyone.
For the second straight year, King Philip took home first place at the league meet held at Milford High School, pulling away from Canton, Milford, Franklin and Taunton down the stretch. The Warriors had a total of 279 points.
“It was an exciting meet to come into,” said first-year KP head coach Jack Pettine. “We were looking to do the best we could today. Throughout the season we had a lot of great competition to prepare us for today.”
King Philip won the first event of the day (200 medley relay) and it turned out to be the only first place finish the Warriors. In the final 10 events, the Warriors relied on their depth with a swimming finishing in fourth or better in eight of them. The only two events KP didn’t have a placement in the top six were the 100 yard free and the 200 free relay.
“We had some really strong showings from guys all throughout the team,” Pettine said. “After our guys who came in first, the guys who came in second, those little points really add up at the end to get us in first place.”
The team of sophomore Colby Vieira, senior Jack Poppenberger, senior Andy Sprague and sophomore Tyler Stringfellow got the Warriors off to a strong start, clocking in at 1:46.96 to win the 200 medley relay, edging Franklin, Milford and Franklin by a second or less.
That foursome went on to pace King Philip the rest of the way.
Vieira took fourth in the 200 IM (2:07.78) and third in the 100 backstroke (57.74), Poppenberger took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.04) and was apart of the 200 free relay that placed seventh, Sprague had a pair of third place finishes, first in the 50 free (23.35) and then in the 100 fly (55.12) and Stringfellow took second in both the 200 free (1:50.30) and 500 free (4:53.69).
Sprague, Vieira and Stringfellow, along with Dean Whyte, took second in the 400 free relay (3:28.06) to finish the meet.
KP also got strong performances from freshman John Dionis (eighth in the 200 free), Dean Whyte (eighth in 200 IM and fifth in the 100 backstroke) and Tate Duffy (fourth in 500 free and eighth in 100 breaststroke). All three were also apart of the 200 free relay that took seventh.
“Dean Whyte came in with some really good placing, Andy Sprague and John Dionis picked up some big points, Kyle Loud helped out too,” Pettine said. “Pretty much everyone on the team, top to bottom, came through in the clutch and that was exciting. It was all-team effort which is great.
“And I could not have done this season without my assistant coach Danielle Hopkins. She kept me going through it all. She worked great with the kids, she was one of our biggest strengths all season long.”
Fresh off a Davenport division dual meet title, Canton carried its momentum in to grab second place with 256 points.
The Bulldogs followed the lead of senior Sebastian Melendez (four time winner) and capitalized on strong showings in the freestyle events to get second place.
Melendez took first in both the 200 free (1:45.54) and the 500 free (4:46.23) – touching the wall at least five seconds ahead of second place in both events. Melendez also anchored the 400 free relay to a thrilling comeback in the final event of the meet and was also apart of the 200 free relay that took first.
Melendez was joined by seniors Owen Guerini and Sean Mitchell as well as freshman Adrian Bankowski in both relay wins.
“Those were big points there are the end, that really elevated us at the end,” said Canton coach Cheryl Cavanaugh. “Our relays were awesome. All of the kids had personal bests, some of the kids were even knocking as much as five and six seconds off of their time. It was an incredible day for us.
“All of the kids in the middle really improved today and knocked a lot of time off.”
Guerini, Mitchell and Bankowski made their mark throughout the meet as well. Mitchell picked up points with a second place in the 50 free (22.99) and touched in fourth in the 100 breaststroke, Guerini was fifth in the 50 free (23.39) and finished sixth overall in the 100 free and Bankowski, in his first league championship meet, was seventh overall in the 50 free (23.88) and came in sixth in the 500 free (5:32.55)
Diego Ferstler also record points for the Bulldogs, placing ninth in the 50 free, 11th in the 100 free and taking 10th in the 200 medley relay along with Chris Milne, Matthew Gilmore and Justin Diep. Mile also took 11th in the 100 breaststroke and Gilmore and Deep took sixth and 12th, respectively, in the 100 fly.
“We were right in the thick of things for a while and we were shocked to be in first at times and be with the big schools,” Cavanaugh said. “We came in just looking for personal bests and trying to get as many medals as we could. It was great for the kids to hear we were in contention for first place.”
Milford rounded out the top three, finishing with 251 points. Senior Nick Antonellis followed up an impressive performance at last year’s meet with another strong showing on Friday night.
“We were right in the thick of it the entire day,” said Milford head coach Dave Chaplin. “I’ve got to give total credit to our staff, they really prepared the kids for a great performance today. I don’t think we had a kid dive in the pool and not swim their best. Every sectional and state qualifying time we were looking to accomplish, we did that in spades. Just a fantastic effort, it was a great performance.”
Antonellis claimed first place in both the 200 IM (1:59.15) and the 100 fly (53.96) and helped two relay teams to top five finishes.
Antonellis teamed with Daniel Pacella, Chris Watson and Marcello Panno to clock in at 1:47.65 in the 200 medley relay – good enough for third place. That same foursome teamed together for the 400 free relay and finished in 3:35.26, taking fourth place.
Watson surged to a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
Panno also placed in the 50 free (sixth, 23.65) and the 100 free (fifth, 52.71). Scarlet Hawk freshman Gillieson Hobert took seven in the 100 backstroke (1:04.77) and 11th in the 50 free (25.25) and teamed with Pacella, Michael Khoury and Gianni Panno for a fourth place finish in the 200 free relay.
Franklin senior Connor Bourgeois won the 50 free (22.51), Oliver Ames sophomore Kyle Gray touched first in a very close 100 free race, coming in at 51.20 – 0.02 seconds ahead of Sharon’s Jason Hertz. North Attleboro’s Nick Haddad claimed first in the 100 backstroke (55.09).
