STOUGHTON, Mass. – At this stage of the season, every win is important, as teams are chasing tournament qualification. On Tuesday night, Stoughton and Taunton played with the urgency of two teams that could ill-afford another loss. It was physical, it was back-and-forth, and it was only decided in the closing minute.

Click here for a photo gallery from this game.

The Black Knights were happy that they had senior guard Shyanne Trinh to turn to down the stretch. Trinh scored 18 of her team-high 20 points in the second half, including 12 in the fourth quarter and five of the game’s final eight points. Her runner broke a 60-60 tie and proved to be the game-winner.

Thanks in part to Trinh’s fourth quarter heroics, Stoughton pulled out a 68-60 victory over the visiting Tigers. The win leaves the Black Knights chasing three wins from their final five games to try and book a spot in the postseason.

“Our team persevered tonight,” said Stoughton coach Charmaine Steele Jordan. “They fought hard. We’ve had a couple of losses that were really hard to swallow and I was proud of them that they worked hard. I told them, it’s not going to be handed to us. Yes you’re talented but you have to put in work.”

She added, “Taunton came back at us and we responded. Sometimes team come back at you and you start to hurry and get on your heels, but they stayed composed.”

Trinh managed only two points in the first half, but the team’s leading scorer got it going after the break. She scored six points in the third and showed signs of finding the range, as the hosts went into the fourth leading 46-44.

She drilled a pair of threes early in the fourth to help extend the lead to as many as six. After Sonya Fernandez (who scored 22 of her 23 points in the second half, including 12 of her own in the fourth) drilled a three to put Taunton ahead for the first time since the first quarter, Mackenzie Manning (12 points) answered with a triple of her own to make it 58-56.

A series of free throws left the game tied at 60, when Trinh beat her marker off the dribble, got into the lane, and knocked down a runner to put the Black Knights ahead for good. After a pair at the line from Jess Maddalena (seven points and seven rebounds), Aliyah Wright (17 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists) found Trinh behind the Taunton defense for a wide open layup that sealed the win.

“She was really long initially and I wanted to say to her, just step in, but you know a shooter, she’s just got to shoot the wrinkles off and second half she’ll start hitting,” Steele Jordan about Trinh’s fourth quarter.

The Tigers kept battling back in the fourth as well. Fernandez was immense in the second half, keeping her team in the game and showing off a full repertoire on offense, from scoring in the paint to stepping outside and knocking down threes.

“She’s a leader on this team,” Taunton coach Amy Siggens said about Fernandez. “We’ve worked on her inside-outside game and when she starts to feel it, you just sit back and say alright lets go and see where this takes us. She’s really, really stepped up her game.”

In the first quarter, Stoughton showed off some of its depth to grab the lead. Manning drilled a three and scored off the dribble, Maddalena grabbed an offensive board for two, and with Stoughton holding just a three-point lead Cate Downey came off the bench to knock down a pair from beyond the arc and extend the advantage to 20-11 after one.

“We’ve talked a lot about how we can’t rely just on Shy and Aliyah,” said Steele Jordan. “There’s other players on our team that can contribute on a regular basis, whether it’s rebounding or shooting. I’m like you guys wouldn’t be on my varsity team if I didn’t think you could play. They’re finally starting to get that confidence.”

Taunton would battled back with an 8-1 run to start the second quarter. Kameron St. Pierre (22 points and 10 rebounds) scored five points during that stretch and fellow freshman Maddy Michenzie (10 rebounds) grabbed an offensive board and putback to make it 21-19.

Jaelyn Fernandez (nine points and six assists) scored four in the second and assisted on St. Pierre’s third three of the half to tie the game at 27, but Stoughton again finished the quarter well. Maddalena hit two at the line and then blocked a shot at the other end. Downey grabbed the loose ball and threw an outlet to Wright for a transition basket and a four-point lead at the break.

The Stoughton lead never got larger than five in the third quarter, as the teams kept trading baskets. Sonya Fernandez heated up in the third with 10 points, but Stoughton always had an answer. After Fernandez nailed a three on one end, Trinh scored on the break. When St. Pierre drilled one, Wright responded with a three of her own. Taunton was able to trim two points off the lead but went into the fourth down 46-44.

Taunton would rue some missed opportunities in the final quarter, as they continued to crash the boards and give themselves multiple opportunities, but were unable to cash in on those chances.

“This was a very physical, tough game and I think that got into our head a little bit,” said Siggens. “We get it and we’re not always focused on the win. It’s about developing. You want to ease people into it but you can’t sometimes and you have to throw people to wolves and see how they react.”

She added, “The cuts we’re making, the passes we’re making, we’re doing the right things, now the the next step is finishing.”

Stoughton (7-8, 4-7) will host North Attleboro on Friday night, trying to split the season series with the Rocketeers and move another step closer to a playoff berth. Taunton (4-9, 3-8) will play host to Oliver Ames on Friday.

Franklin, 67 @ Foxboro, 61 – FinalFranklin senior Brayden Sullivan converted a key traditional three-point play in the fourth quarter and the Panthers took care of business from the free throw line in the fourth quarter (7-for-10) to grab a close win on the road over Foxboro. It was a consistent night on offense for Franklin, scoring 17 points in three quarters while netting 16 points in the third quarter. Franklin led 17-12 after one, 34-31 at halftime, and took a 50-45 advantage into the final frame. Chris Edgehill scored a team-high 16 points while Sullivan finished with 15 points for the Panthers, who were held to just two three-pointers. Foxboro’s Donald Rogers scored a team-high 14 points, Kevin Gallagher added 11 points, and both Brandon Borde and Will Morrison chipped in with 10 points apiece.

King Philip, 71 @ North Attleboro, 53 – Final North Attleboro used a 10-0 surge to close the first half to tie the game at halftime but the second half belonged to King Philip as the Warriors scored over 20 points in each of the final two quarters to run away with a win. Amanda Kaiser scored 15 to lead the Rocketeers, Regan Fein scored 11, and Summer Doherty had nine, but North struggled with KP’s speed and press. North coach Nikki Correia said, “We came out slow and they absolutely wanted it more than we did. KP never stopped hustling and went after every loose ball.”

Stoughton, 41 @ Mansfield, 55 – FinalMansfield turned on the defense in the second quarter to grab the lead and never let up to hold off the Black Knights. The Hornets trailed 18-12 after one, as Stoughton’s Shyanne Trinh scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the quarter, but held the Black Knights to only four points in the second and scored 17 to pull ahead. MILFORD, Mass. – Early in the second quarter, Taunton and Milford was a back-and-forth game and neither team was able to wrest control from the other. The largest lead for either team to that point was just three points. Then the visiting Tigers locked down on the defensive end and put themselves in the driver’s seat.

Taunton scored 14 straight points and dominated the second quarter, outscoring Milford 21-6 in the frame, to provide the separation it needed to pull out a 54-40 road victory. Nine different players scored at least two points for the Tigers.

“I think they just got confident,” said Siggens about what prompted the big run. “We changed up our defense a little and they got one or two picks and then they just started feeling it. We were taking care of the ball, making good passes, good decisions, and I think the way these kids fight they get the love from the bench and the adrenaline gets flowing.”

Things were even at the end of the first. Both teams had five different players get on the score sheet in the opening eight minutes and no player had more than four points.

Brooke Ferreira and Jillian Michelson each knocked down threes in the quarter, Carly Ferreira scored on a drive to the rim, and Jess Douglas tied the game at 12-12 with a transition basket after Brooke Ferreira’s defensive board.

Taunton got four points from freshman Maddie Michenzie in the first and started to dominate the glass, with put-backs by Kameron St. Pierre (five points, six rebounds, six steals, and three assists) and Sonya Fernandez (five points and 13 rebounds).

“We’ve been really working on playing together and moving the ball and I thought we did that really, really well once we settled into that first half,” said Siggens. “This is stuff that we’re still learning but the way they stepped up and improved, we just keep adding things onto that stuff.”

Michelson scored first in the second quarter, off an assist by Emma Lawrence (nine points and 11 rebounds), but Jaelyn Fernandez tied it with a lefty scoop. St. Pierre drilled her only three of the game to put Taunton up by three and then Lawrence made it a one-point game with a pair at the line.

Milford only managed two more points in the quarter, as Taunton broke the game wide open. Abby Souza (five points) got the run started with a three and Braeley McDonald added four points. Eighth grader Sam Lincoln finished the 14-0 run with a drive and lefty finish. She also added a basket after an offensive rebound, finishing with six of her team-high 10 points in the quarter.

“They’re young and they’re coachable,” Siggens said of Lincoln and Michenzie, who were both recently called up to varsity. “They want to be here and they want to learn, so anything we tell them to do they try to do it. You just have to throw them to the wolves to get that experience that they need to play in this league.

Turnovers and rebounding were the story for the Hawks in the first and they struggled to try and get back into the game after Taunton’s big run.

“We’re just not built to go on big runs,” said Milford coach TJ Dolliver. “We turn the ball over way too much. There’s a lot of little things that we need to get better at. There’s a lot of types of turnovers that drive me nuts on the sidelines because you didn’t have to make that decision.”

In the third quarter, the Tigers continued to use balanced scoring to extend the lead. Jaelyn Fernandez (seven points) scored three, Souza added a bucket after Sonya Fernandez’s steal and assist, Kristy Gorman chipped in with four, and Lincoln and Michenzie each scored two points.

The only thing keeping the game from getting completely out of hand was Michelson. The junior guard scored 10 of her team’s 11 points in the quarter, twice getting baskets off of steals, and finished with a game-high 18 total.

“She’s done so much better this year scoring the ball,” Dolliver explained. “She’s slowly progressing as a player. Last year, as tough as a battle as it was for us, all of the girls that are still on the team were only sophomores and they’re still only juniors. Without a senior in the program, it’s about just getting better and then going after it.”

Offense was at a premium in the fourth quarter, as the teams combined to knock down four shots from the field. Brooke Ferreira (seven points) hit three free throws and assisted on a Michelson three, as the Hawks managed to hang around and cut the lead from 22 back down to 14 at the final whistle.

Taunton (3-6, 2-5) will head home on Friday night to host Attleboro. Milford (3-8, 0-7) will head out onto the road to visit Stoughton’s new gym for the first time.

Burkett intercepted a pass on the defensive end, leading to a free throw from Drew Nickla to make it a four-point game. Girls Basketball: Ten Players to Watch in 2019-2020

G2019-2020 Girls Basketball Players to Watch
Foxboro junior Katelyn Mollica is one of the players to watch as a new Hockomock League girls basketball season gets underway. (Josh Perry/HockomockSports.com)

Player are listed alphabetically

Ali Brigham, Senior – Franklin

Every season Brigham has improved different parts of her game and last year it came together in a completing dominating performance that earned the George Washington University-commit league MVP and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year honors. Brigham scored 25.6 points per game, reaching the 1,000-point plateau for her career, pulled down more than 17 rebounds per game, and blocked more than six shots per game. She led the Panthers to a division title, the D1 Central title, and had them minutes from a spot in the D1 final. If she continues at this pace, then Brigham could finish her career as the program’s all-time leading scorer. Numbers aside, Brigham continues to develop her all-around game, not just controlling the paint with her height but also showing off quick feet to cover forwards and extending her range on offense and forcing defenses to cover her further from the basket. After stepping her game up to a new level in the postseason, Brigham looks poised for a huge senior season and is the primary reason that Franklin is the heavy favorite to repeat in the Kelley-Rex and is a state title contender this winter.

Kiara Cerruti, Sophomore – Canton

Cerruti was one of three talented freshmen that stepped right into the lineup last year for Canton and instantly elevated the Bulldogs to one of the program’s most successful seasons. Along with Fay and Sydney Gallery, Cerruti lived up to the preseason hype to send Canton back to the playoffs. She averaged a team-high 12.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. She finished as one of the top five scorers in the entire league. Deceptively quick, with the ability to beat defenders off the bounce, Cerruti was also a strong shooter from the perimeter. She has the size to take smaller guards down into the block and also to stretch forwards out to the three-point line. She was also a threat on the break, helping Canton push the ball with good vision and providing a capable finisher at the rim. The trio of freshmen learned a lot from their first varsity season and expectations will be high that they can help Canton push for more this year, including a challenge to Foxboro in the Davenport and a playoff victory.

Sonya Fernandez, Junior – Taunton

There is a lot of energy around the Taunton program this season after Amy Siggens made the switch from King Philip to be the new Tigers coach and Fernandez is one of several returning players with multiple years of varsity experience that will try to make Siggens’ first year a success. Fernandez led the Tigers with 9.7 points per game last winter as an athletic wing/power forward. With her size and speed, Fernandez was able to create mismatches on the glass and get out in front on the break for easy baskets. She has continued to improve as a finisher at the rim and improved her mid-range game last year, giving Taunton a balance to a system that loved to shoot from the outside. A lot of threes meant a lot of long rebounds and her quickness meant that Fernandez was able to grab a lot of loose balls and save possessions for the Tigers. Siggens likes to emphasize the defensive side of the ball and Fernandez could be a weapon either in a zone or man-to-man system with her long arms and disrupting the opposition, all of which makes Taunton a sleeper to try and make a return to the postseason this winter.

Telishya Herbert, Senior – Sharon

Herbert finished last season as the top scorer for the Eagles at 11.4 points per game, which was 0.1 better than teammate Emma Eberhardt and good for ninth-best in the Hock. A powerful presence in the post, Herbert showed off an array of skills during her breakout season, including her ability to finish at the rim in the halfcourt or in transition and an improving shot from the elbow and beyond. By knocking down shots from the outside, Herbert opened lanes to drive and she was capable of finishing in traffic regardless of contact. She also has the potential for double-doubles every night with her willingness to crash the boards, which will help the Eagles get out and run more this season. With the graduation of Eberhardt, Herbert will need to take on more responsibility on the offensive end and develop her playmaking game as teams focus their defenses on preventing her from getting to the rim. Herbert’s experience will help Sharon develop several of the young forwards who saw playing time last season and could make the Eagles frontcourt a tough matchup this winter.

Amanda Kaiser, Junior – North Attleboro

North Attleboro will turn to Nikki Correia as head coach this season and she wants to get the Rocketeers out and running as often as possible this winter. One key to that up-tempo style will be the continued growth of Kaiser as a threat on both ends of the floor. She scored 10.6 points and grabbed 4.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore and became more than a sharpshooter (48 three-pointers) as she totaled 98 steals and deflections last year. Her defensive ability, with long arms and quick feet, should give North a foundation to build its fastbreak game on and she is also someone who can finish the break on the other end as well. She rarely passes up a shooting opportunity and has range that defenses can’t ignore, opening up space to drive or for teammates to get open. Kaiser has added new components to her game each of the first two seasons on varsity and, if that continues, she could speed up North’s revival and its return to the tournament.

Liv McCall, Senior – Attleboro

Whenever Attleboro needed a spark last year, it turned to its talented point guard. McCall scored more than 10 points per game for the Bombardiers and dished out three assists per game, showing off her ability to beat defenders off the dribble and her willingness to take big shots and stretch defenses. McCall knocked down 42 three-pointers last year, making 35 percent of her attempts, and she stepped up in big moments, such as her 18-point night in an upset of Franklin or 15 points against crosstown rival Bishop Feehan. Attleboro was a young team last year and as those players gain experience expect McCall to become more of a playmaker, setting up her teammates for open looks and using her speed and control with the ball to get the Bombardiers out and running. This could be a bounce-back year for Attleboro, which has a number of players back from last year and McCall will be counted on to lead a still relatively inexperienced crew on a run at the postseason.

Katelyn Mollica, Junior – Foxboro

After showing off her range of skills as a freshman on a state title-winning team, Mollica took her game to a new level as a sophomore, becoming the team’s primary ball-handler, leading scorer, and one of the top players in the league. The reigning Underclassman of the Year scored 18 points per game, while shooting 50 percent from the floor, 43 percent from three, and 90 percent from the line. She is already just 300 points shy of 1,000 for her career. She also dished out 2.7 assists per game for the three-time defending Davenport division champions. With quickness to spare and unlimited range, Mollica is a nightmare to try and guard. Get to close, she drives by you, but back off and she will knock down any open look. As she continues to develop her handle as the point guard and gains more experience about the types of defenses that teams are going to throw her way, Mollica could be ready for an even more explosive junior season. With a strong core returning from last year’s team, Foxboro remains the favorite in the Davenport and Mollica remains the league’s top backcourt threat.

Caroline Peper, Sophomore – Oliver Ames

Peper broke onto the scene with a remarkable rookie campaign, becoming the first freshman to be named to the HockomockSports.com First Team for girls basketball. She finished third in the league at 15.6 points per game and knocked down 46 percent of her shots from beyond the arc and 88 percent of her shots at the line. Peper helped the Tigers make a run to the Div. 1 South quarterfinal and a near-upset of Wellesley. She uses her height at the shooting guard position to get open for good looks on the perimeter and is an improving finisher at the rim. As she continues to work on her handle and her ability to beat defenders off the dribble, Peper could be one of the top offensive weapons in the league. Her size also gives her the potential to be a defensive weapon as well, providing a matchup problem for smaller guards on both ends of the floor and becoming a more active rebounder. After a strong first season, the future looks bright for both Peper and for the Tigers, who will try to challenge Franklin’s dominance in the Kelley-Rex this winter.

Faye Veilleux, Senior – King Philip

A mostly healthy season helped Veilleux reach the potential that she showed in her first two seasons on varsity and helped King Philip make a return to the playoffs. The power forward averaged 12.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, while showing off a diverse offensive game that included the ability to shoot off the dribble and to finish at the basket. She also shot 72 percent from the line and became one of the league’s top offensive rebounders, allowing the Warriors to get multiple looks at the basket on each trip. Her speed on the break allowed her to get easy baskets and she demonstrated the ability to create her own shot, giving the Warriors another end option at the end of the shot clock. As she expands her range to the perimeter and continues to improve as a ball-handler, while also building rapport with teammates who are gaining experience at the varsity level, Veilleux will be one of the players that new coach Dan Nagle will be counting on to make his first season a success.

Aliyah Wright, Senior – Stoughton

There have been a lot of changes in the Stoughton team over the last few years. Transfers, graduations, and injuries have all taken their toll and forced the Black Knights into a lot of different lineups, but through it all Wright has been a constant. The senior guard led the team in scoring at 12 points per game last year, but was also one of the team’s top rebounders, snagging five double-doubles. A tenacious defender who uses her height, speed, and quick hands to guard multiple positions, Wright sparks the Stoughton break and makes them a difficult matchup for most teams. On offense, Wright has an explosive first step and thrives on contact as she goes to the basket. While not a prolific outside threat, she finds ways to get into the lane and is a creative finisher. If she misses, she is likely to grab the offensive rebound and get another chance. Wright’s experience at the point will be critical for the Black Knights this winter, as they look to mark the first year in their new gym with a trip to the postseason.
