ATTLEBORO, Mass. – During the first three weeks of the season, Attleboro struggled to live up to the preseason hype against a difficult stretch of opponents and a roster in flux from a series of injuries that ensured trainer Wes Pondolfino was earning his paycheck. The Bombardiers lost key players on both sides of the ball and lost the opening three games.

But, over the last two weeks, the injured players have returned to the field and Attleboro has looked like the explosive team that many predicted. On Friday night at Tozier-Cassidy Field, the Bombardiers put it all together, dominating in all three phases and posting 38 points in the first half of a 44-0 victory over Oliver Ames.

“That’s what happens when you get healthy,” said Attleboro coach Mike Strachan. “We’ve got a lot of good seniors and they worked hard all week. We had a good week of practice and we’ve just got to build off this win.”

Attleboro took control right from the opening kick-off, marching 58 yards in eight plays to take a quick lead. Alex Rodriguez had a pair of carries for 31 yards and senior quarterback Cam Furtado scored from 11 yards out. Furtado then took a hit, but completed the conversion pass to Nathan Barboza to make it 8-0.

The Bombardiers quickly got the ball back when running back Anthony Berksza fumbled trying to stretch a screen pass into extra yards, Desmond Woodson recovered for the hosts, but, after Furtado hit James Weir (one of the players back from injury) for 12 yards down to the OA 10, the Tigers held firm and forced a turnover on downs.

OA could not build momentum off the defensive stand, as Curtis Cann’s third down deep pass was intercepted by Josh Therrien. Attleboro moved the ball rapidly down field, showing balance between run and pass. Justin Cote extended the lead when he cut back against the grain on a sweep to the left and weaved his way for a 23-yard scored. Furtado got the pylon at full stretch for another conversion.

“Unfortunately, a lot of things went wrong for us,” said OA coach Mike Holland. “A few mistakes here or there that Attleboro capitalized on and Attleboro, their record is misleading and we knew that they’re a good team.”

Matt Corrado stuffed Berksza (12 carries, 63 yards) behind the line and Qualeem Charles batted down a Cann pass to end the next OA drive. Elvin Sam returned the punt 28 yards to the OA 42 and Attleboro again went to work offensively. This time the Bombardiers got to the end zone through the air, as Furtado (4-9, 70 yards) hit Cote in stride for a 41-yard score and added another conversion run.

“Lot of balance,” said Strachan about the Attleboro offense. “We’ve got a lot of senior leadership back, but now we’ve got a lot of the younger kids who’ve played the last four weeks and are really starting to put it all together. I’m very, very happy.”

On the ensuing kick, the up-back Darnele Ryan, who had a strong game for the OA defense, could not handle the bounce and Rodriguez was first to the loose ball for Attleboro. Furtado (nine carries, 35 yards) went 15 yards on the first play and then sophomore Joseph Llanos went straight up the middle for 12-yard touchdown.

“We’re getting better,” said Holland, “but we have to play mistake-free, which we didn’t. We have to hold onto the ball, which we didn’t, and if something goes wrong then you’ve got to keep fighting and we didn’t.”

Berksza broke a 19-yard run on the first play of the next OA drive, but Charles pressured Cann on third down and the pass fell incomplete. Berksza’s punt was fielded on a short hop by Sam at his own 26. The senior wideout took the ball straight up the middle and then cut to the far sideline where he found an opening to take it all the way to the end zone to make it 38-0.

“It was a tough few weeks for us but these kids have responded,” said Strachan. “This was a good week for us to get momentum and obviously Mansfield (Attleboro’s next opponent) is a great program and we’ll do our best to be ready for them.”

With an eye towards next week’s showdown with the Hornets, Attleboro turned to its bench in the second half, giving some of the younger players an opportunity. Dante Williams (eight carries, 46 yards) was one of those and with 1:46 remaining he punched it in from three yards out to put the icing on a dominant performance by the Bombardiers.

“Our team is getting better, but we have to be perfect for four quarters,” said Holland. “We have talent, we’re getting stronger, we’re getting bigger, but you just can’t make mistakes and tonight we made some mistakes.”

When asked if there was a different atmosphere in the Bombardiers’ locker room than during the first three weeks, Strachan responded, “Oh yeah. Oh yeah there is. We’re excited about where we’re at right now.”

Attleboro (2-3, 2-1) remains a game behind King Philip in the race for the Kelley-Rex division crown. The Bombardiers are currently tied with Mansfield and will host the Hornets next Friday night. Oliver Ames (2-3, 1-2) will try to play spoiler next week with a trip to Macktaz Field to take on league-leading KP.

Furtado Leads the Way for Bombardiers at Taunton

TAUNTON, Mass. – It had been a rough opening three weeks of the season for the Attleboro football team, losing all three games against strong opposition (two by a combined seven points) and seeing the roster decimated by injuries.

Click here for a photo gallery from this game.

But on Friday night at Aleixo Stadium, the Bombardiers got healthy and got on the board with their first win, beating Taunton 45-21 to end Tigers’ perfect start to the season.

Senior quarterback Cam Furtado led the way for Attleboro once again, running for a pair of touchdowns and throwing for two more while amassing nearly 250 yards of offense. The Bombardiers also showed off an array of skill position players, with seven players getting at least one carry and six players having at least one reception.

“He had great poise tonight,” Attleboro coach Mike Strachan said of Furtado. “He handled things, getting guys lined up, and I thought that was really important for him. He’s a had a good year for us and he’s done it with really not the full cast of characters, so hopefully we can build off this.”

Penalties killed Attleboro’s first possession of the game, which got as far as the Taunton 15 before stalling and ending in a punt. The Tigers immediately took advantage and took the lead. T.J. Mendes gave warning with an 11-yard draw up the middle and then broke through the line again on the next play, racing 53 yards for the opening score.

Attleboro bounced right back with a 73-yard drive, keeping the ball on the ground almost the entire way. Junior Alex Rodriguez (eight carries, 73 yards) had three rushes on the drive, senior Marcus Blaise had three and Furtado (16 carries, 86 yards) had back-to-back keepers that totaled 31 yards.

He capped the drive by hitting senior tight end James Weir (just back from injury) for a seven-yard score. Furtado then completed a pass to Justin Cote for the conversion.

Nathan Barboza picked off Leonard on the first play of Taunton’s next possession and returned it to the Tigers eight-yard-line. Two plays later, Furtado’s six-yard keeper and ensuing two-point conversion made it 16-7.

Taunton was not going away in the first half and answered right back. A 55-yard kick-off return by Tryton Zavala gave the Tigers ideal field position at the Attleboro 20. On fourth and 11, Leonard threw a receiver screen to Collin Hunter on the near sideline and the senior wideout broke tackles on his way to the end zone.

The game changed on Attleboro’s last possession of the half. Starting in Taunton territory, it looked like the Bombardiers were going three-and-out, but a running into the punter penalty on fourth and four kept the drive alive. On fourth and six from the 22, Furtado and Barboza hooked up for a seven-yard completion.

Again the Taunton defense held and had the Bombardiers on the edge. Senior Billy DeRosa sacked Furtado on third down for a 12-yard loss pushing the visitors back to the 26 and facing fourth and 21. Attleboro tried a trick play with wideout Elvin Sam tossing a pass, but it was incomplete. Taunton celebrated and both teams walked to the sidelines thinking the drive was over. No one noticed the flag sitting next to the Tigers sideline.

The call was unsportsmanlike conduct on the Taunton bench. The official explained later during a timeout that he had warned the Taunton coaches to give him room on the sideline, but during the fourth down play he ran into a coach and gave a penalty. Taunton was stunned and Attleboro made it worse on the next play as Furtado threaded the needle to Sam (three catches, 68 yards) for a 13-yard score and a 24-14 lead.

“That was a difficult call,” said Taunton coach Brad Sidwell. “On a fourth down, when we’re getting the ball back…but even that, the roughing the punter we had before that was killer.”

Strachan said, “I don’t know what happened, I just know that we had opportunities all half and we just kept getting a penalty here and a penalty there. We just couldn’t seem to get going and then we settled in and that gave us a lot of momentum. That was a huge moment for us.”

Attleboro came out of the locker room fired up and took control of the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Sophomore Qualeem Charles (also back from an injury) blocked a Taunton punt to give the Bombardiers the ball at the Tigers 29. After a 20-yard screen pass from Furtado to Cote, Rodriguez went up the middle for a seven-yard touchdown.

Taunton scored on its next possession with Leonard (4-11, 78 yards) finding Brayden Merrill underneath the coverage and the junior breaking it for a 41-yard touchdown. But that renewed energy was short-lived, as the Tigers had no answer for Furtado.

The senior signal caller kept a third and nine play alive, scrambling to his left, and then firing a perfect deep ball to Josh Therrien for a 50-yard completion. Cote punched it in from a yard out. Barboza added a one-yard run on the next Attleboro possession and Nolan Jaeger added an interception in a dominating second half for the Bombardiers.

“Attleboro is a good team,” said Sidwell. “They had a couple games that they should’ve won and they’re a big, strong team and they took it to us in the second half. We’ll keep working.”

Strachan was happy to welcome a few of his key players back, including junior Nick Evans who had a cast on his arm, and also to have players that could make plays and take some of the pressure off Furtado.

“We’re getting some kids healthy in the backfield,” he explained, “and it takes a lot of pressure off him and we’re throwing the ball and getting Elvin on the outside. We just had to be patient. It’s been a frustrating three weeks but this was good for us.”

When asked if this might be a turning point for the season, Strachan replied, “I just told the seniors that it gets the monkey off our backs. We just have to keep working hard. There’s a good team every single week.”

Attleboro (1-3, 1-1) will try to build on the first win of the season when it hosts Oliver Ames next Friday. Taunton (3-1, 1-1) will look to get back on track next Friday when it travels to Alumni Field to take on Mansfield.

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – There are few teams in the Hockomock League that can call on as many offensive weapons as North Attleboro and when everything clicks into gear then it can feel like the Rocketeers are capable of moving the ball up and down the field at will.

Click here for a photo gallery from this game.

Everything clicked on Thanksgiving morning at Tozier-Cassidy Field in the 96th annual holiday meeting (and 100th overall) with rival Attleboro.

North Attleboro (9-2) scored on each of its first six possessions, spreading the ball around and proving unstoppable for the Attleboro (4-7) defense. Behind three touchdowns from Offensive MVP Bobby Mylod and two scores from Defensive MVP Nick Rajotte, the Rocketeers rolled to a 41-13 victory and won back “Hilda.”

“Last year was disappointing,” said Mylod of North’s loss to the Bombardiers at Community Field. “We disappointed our seniors. We came out here and we didn’t want that to happen to us. It all paid off.”

North Attleboro coach Don Johnson said, “We’re multi-dimensional. Chad [Peterson] can throw the ball as well as anybody. Nick and Bobby complement each other so well and they’re effective in the passing game too.

“I wouldn’t want to defend us, I know that.”

Attleboro moved the ball on its opening possession but was forced to punt, pinning North back at its own seven-yard-line. The Rocketeers put together a methodical, 15-play, 93-yard drive to open the score and set the tone for the game.

The Bombardiers had a chance to get the Rocketeers off the field, but Kyle McCarthy hit Mylod (six receptions, 119 yards) for 14 yards on a fake punt to keep the drive going. Rajotte (17 carries, 73 yards) led the way with eight carries on the drive, including a 23-yard burst up the middle to get the ball inside the 10 and then the two-yard dive to give North the 6-0 lead.

After another Attleboro punt, forced by a big play by Jay Loring on a screen pass from Tyler McGovern to Cam Furtado for a nine-yard loss, North took over and went right back to work. On third and nine from the North 27, Peterson (11-15, 159 yards) kept the drive alive with a 19-yard completion to Mylod, who would eventually finish it off on an eight-yard sweep. Peterson hit McCarthy for two and a 14-0 lead.

“I thought the offense did a good job controlling the game,” said Johnson, “and that’s what we needed to do, keep them off the field a little bit and just move the ball.”

North were gifted great field position when Attleboro had back-to-back snaps skid across the ground, one recovered by Nathan Barboza on third down and the other a 12-yard loss recovered by McGovern on the punt attempt. Peterson hit McCarthy to for 13 yards and two plays later he hit Mylod for another 13 and the touchdown.

“They’re a great football team,” said Attleboro coach Mike Strachan. “They’ve got athletes everywhere. There is a reason why they’re Hock champs this year. When you get them, you need to take opportunities. You can’t take offsides on third and short and you can’t give up a fourth down conversion.”

Attleboro gave itself hope of a comeback right before the break. Elvin Sam broke a 10-yard run and then McGovern hit Furtado for 24 yards down to the North 26. Another completion to Furtado (seven receptions, 66 yards) got the ball inside the North five-yard-line and Furtado punched it in with no time remaining in the half for a 21-6 deficit.

“We reminded them of two years ago,” said Johnson of the conversation in the North locker room, “because we went up by three scores, they got one right at the end of half and that went into overtime. As far as we were concerned at halftime, it was 0-0 and we were starting over again.”

Rajotte nearly stole the momentum right back when he took the opening kick of the third quarter 70 yards for a score, only to have a holding call bring the touchdown back. It did not slow down North though, as the Rocketeers would still extend the lead. Peterson had three straight completions, one each to Hacmoni Cuevas, McCarthy, and Mylod and then Mylod closed out the drive with two carries for 25 yards and a 27-6 lead.

Strachan said, “You go into halftime and you know you’ve got to stop the run and if your coverages aren’t exactly right then you’ll take advantage of it. They were the better team today.”

Attleboro would answer back with a little help from the Rocketeers. Sam pounced on a muffed punt to give the Bombardiers the ball back at the North 22. After a couple of completions from McGovern (9-22, 75 yards), Furtado would push it across on a sweep right to cut the lead to 27-13.

Rajotte returned the ensuing kick 20 yards and McCarthy (eight carries, 86 yards) broke a 38-yard run to set North up again. Rajotte would get his second touchdown from one-yard out to make it 34-13. On North’s next possession, Peterson threw a perfect swing pass to Mylod on the far sideline for 40 yards and then McCarthy got his first score from two-yards out.

“There is very little margin for error,” said Strachan, “and they’re so good at distributing the ball around. They’re not one-dimensional, so if you start taking away the jet, they hit you with the power. If you take away the power, they hit you in the seam.”

For Mylod and the other North seniors, last season’s loss motivated them to ensure they went out on top. He said, “It’s a great ending to my high school career. We had the best team, I felt, and lost to two Super Bowl contending teams. No shame in that. We came out, played our tails off and won.”

Although this was a big victory for the Rocketeers, the series has tightened up in recent years with the teams splitting the last four Thanksgiving Day meetings. While he wants to win every season, Johnson admits that it is better for the rivalry to have it be more balanced.

He said, “I think it just makes it all the more meaningful. Mike and those guys over there, we all know those coaches well, they’re a great staff. They’ve done a great job every year, so we know we’re in a ball game every year on Thanksgiving and I think that’s what makes it special.”

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – It’s cliché to say, but Attleboro head coach Mike Strachan probably couldn’t have scripted a better start for his Bombardiers on Friday night against Oliver Ames.

Less than a minute into the game, Attleboro had already found the end zone twice and by the end of the first quarter, the Bombardiers had a three score lead as the cruised to a 35-8 win over the Tigers at Muscato Stadium.

“I thought we were focused, I thought we were ready to play this week, we had a great week of practice,” Strachan said. “Our athletes took it upon themselves to do the things we practiced all week. I thought we had a pretty good game plan coming in and before the game we talked about the things we can control and I think we did that.

“I think we controlled the line of scrimmage, we gave Tyler [McGovern] some time to throw. And then the combo of Tyler and Cam [Furtado], I think that makes it hard for teams to defend us. I was very happy with the performance.”

On the second play from scrimmage, senior quarterback Tyler McGovern (7/15, 203 yards, 2 touchdowns) hit an open Elvin Sam in stride for a 63 yard touchdown, Paul DeLuca‘s extra point (5/5 XP) putting the visitors up 7-0 just 41 seconds into the game.

The Bombardiers used a set play on the ensuing kickoff, chipping a high kick short of OA’s return men. Attleboro came flying down, forcing a fumble, Josh Therrien recovering it at the Tigers’ 36 yard line. On the first play, just the third play from scrimmage of the game, McGovern once again hooked up with Sam, the senior hitting the wide open junior in the end zone for a 36 yard touchdown.

Attleboro led 14-0 just 56 seconds into the game.

“I think we have six turnovers off that kickoff play, it’s been a good thing for us,” Strachan said. “We spend a lot of time on special teams, we practice it a lot.”

Oliver Ames’ first drive of the game totaled 11 plays as the Tigers moved in Attleboro territory. But Attleboro’s defense held up as OA couldn’t convert a fourth down at the Bombardier 28-yard line.

Attleboro took its next drive 72 yards, this time using eight plays to go the distance. McGovern connected with James Weir for a 30 yard gain and then Cam Furtado for a 21 yard completion. Two plays after Furtado’s reception, McGovern used a sneak for a 1 yard score and a 21-0 lead with 24 seconds left in the first quarter.

“I think you can see Elvin Sam is coming along and Cam is working hard out there and then Tyler is throwing the ball well,” Strachan said. “I think our young kids are starting to play, which is a good thing because we’re really young. Tonight was a really positive night for us.”

Oliver Ames’ had its best drive of the first half when they marched 60 yards on eight plays, highlighted by 43 yard completion on a reverse throw from Travis Campbell to Leandro Moro. On fourth down on Attleboro’s 29-yard line, OA quarterback Kyle Gagliardi‘s pass was just out of the reach of a diving Noah Fitzgerald in the end zone.

McGovern and the Bombardiers cashed in once more before the halftime break. The senior quarterback connected with Steve Hamerski twice for a total of 38 yards and Nathan Barboza burst up the middle for a 20 yard gain. Five plays later, Furtado (13 carries, 91 yards) took a toss to the left and got around the edge for an 8 yard touchdown and a 28-0 lead at halftime.

“We made too many mental mistakes, too many physical mistakes early and we spotted them 14 points,” Oliver Ames head coach Mike Holland said. “We had to play catch up and they’re a good team. It’s hard enough to win when you’re even but if you spot them some points, it’s tough. Attleboro played well tonight, they’re a good team.”

Attleboro’s defense held strong in the second half, forcing a turnover on downs at midfield to start the second half and then Furtado coming away with an interception on OA’s second drive of the third quarter.

“If you look inside, I think it all stemmed from the defensive line,” Strachan said of his defense. “Chris Dam is a little fireplug in there, and then Andrew [Gingras] comes to play, and Nick Evans is really starting to play well for us. We have a lot of young kids on the defensive side and they are starting to understand it a bit more.”

The Bombardiers’ final touchdown came on their second drive of the third quarter with Furtado taking over at quarterback. Attleboro used nine plays to cover 72 yards, Furtado capping the drive with a 3 yard keeper.

Oliver Ames marched 76 yards on 10 plays in its lone drive of the fourth quarter. Liston Funai (14 carries, 65 yards) carried three straight times for gains of 12, 17 and 18 yards. Gagliardi hit Brandon Timulty on the sideline for a 13 yard gain on third down to keep the drive alive. Four plays later, Funai went up the middle for a 5 yard touchdown. The Tigers used a fake field goal, with the holder, Campbell, hitting Michael Mulrean on a shuffle pass for the two point conversion.

Attleboro football improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Kelley-Rex division. Oliver Ames falls to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. While the Tigers will travel to Aleixo Stadium next week to take on Taunton, Attleboro will welcome the division leading Warriors of King Philip to Tozier-Cassidy Field.

“King Philip, they’re a physical team, they’re a great football team,” Strachan said. “Coach Lee does a phenomenal job with those guys and they’ve got it going on right now. We’ve got to play our best game next week, no doubt.”
