MEDWAY, Mass. – Trailing by six goals at halftime and five after the third quarter, Sharon rallied to try and extend its season for at least one more round. Led by three goals from senior Matt Cancian, the Eagles got as close as two goals and had a three-on-none break that could have made it even closer.

Unfortunately, the Eagles ran out of time and Medway goalie Tanner Pearl made a series of strong saves that preserved the lead as the pressure mounted. The Mustangs managed to hold on for the final six minutes and advanced with a 14-12 victory in Tuesday night’s Div. 2 Central/East first round game at Hanlon Field.

“We brought it in at halftime and we kind of asked ourselves, how do we want to go out?” explained first-year head coach Pete DeSisto. “We were down a good amount and it was just kind of a gut-check.”

The Mustangs dominated the first half and every time that Sharon got on the board Medway seemed to respond with a couple of its own.

Junior Jake Tomsik opened the scoring 90 seconds into the game and that was quickly matched by Cancian, who won the face-off and raced down to score his first. Adam Dwyer came right back for Medway but Mark Bloom tied it again with a step back rip that snuck inside the far post.

Tim Niklas drove into the middle to regain the lead (a lead that Medway would never relinquish) and then a long Mustangs possession ended in a Collin Kennealley goal off a back cut. Seconds later Tomsik scored with a backhand shot in traffic to make it 5-2 after the first.

Josh Rotman scored his first with a shot in traffic to cut the lead to two, but Sharon mistakes helped Medway build a five-goal lead midway through the quarter. Rotman scored his second to cut the lead to 8-4 but James Anderson went 50 yards straight down the middle to answer right back and Tomsik’s third made it 10-4 at the break.

Whatever was said at halftime turned the tide for the Eagles, who dominated possession in the third quarter, although they struggled to cut into the lead.

Needing to find a way back into the game, Sharon looked to its senior trio of Cancian, Bloom, and Titus.

DeSisto said, “It started with our seniors. They brought everyone out, they set the example that the younger guys seemed to follow. It just seemed a little too late at the end.”

Bloom scored first but three minutes later Dwyer was allowed to run straight down the middle to beat Dan Spelfogel (six saves). Craig Titus leapt and finished on the edge of the crease and Bloom picked out Titus for a man-up goal that brought Sharon within four goals.

But, with a minute left in the third, Ben Steinhoff also found plenty of space in the middle of the defense to give Medway a 12-7 advantage heading to the fourth.

“At the beginning of the year, no one who played defense for us had gotten varsity time and from where we came from at the beginning of the year to now is leaps and bounds,” said DeSisto about the performance of his defensive unit. “We definitely have a bright future.”

Rotman started the comeback with a lefty shot on the run and then Cancian quickly added another with a shot into the bottom corner. Steinhoff got one back straight off the draw, but Cancian scored a man-up goal to make it 13-10 and then won the draw and came down to score with an overhand shot to the corner.

“He did everything,” said DeSisto of Cancian. “e started to take over at the end. He hurt his ankle early in the second half and just manned up and kept going. It was a real gutsy performance.”

Anderson again found a lane in the middle to get an important insurance goal for the Mustangs, but Rotman bullied his way to his fourth goal of the game to make the deficit just two with 6:15 to play.

In the fourth, Jack Lesser twice hit the post and Cancian and Rotman both saw Pearl come up with big saves to rob them of sure goals. Lesser also had a chance in transition to cut the lead to one, but his shot on the break went wide and Pearl chased it down quickly to get Medway possession.

“I can’t even think about the amount of saves he made with just the tip of his toe or something like that and yeah if we buried three more of those then we’re talking about something else,” DeSisto reflected.

It was not the way the first-year coach was hoping to end his season but with only three seniors on this year’s roster, the Eagles have plenty of promise for the future.

“I’m excited,” said DeSisto. “We’re losing three unbelievable players…but we had a really young team this year.

“To be where we’re at now says a lot about our seniors and juniors and upperclassmen but it says a lot about our freshmen and their willingness to go out there and learn.”

Mustangs Second Half Surge Sinks Sharon

SHARON, Mass. – Heading into halftime of Tuesday morning’s game, Sharon had answered back from a Medway run and had managed to tie the game on Mark Bloom’s third goal of the half. The momentum was with the home team at the break, although the Mustangs started the third quarter man-up thanks to a penalty at the halftime whistle.

Medway scored on that man-up situation, then a minute later added a second. Then it was another EMO goal for the Mustangs to make it 10-7 and then another on a locked in, two-minute penalty. When the dust settled on the third quarter, Medway had broken open a tied game and taken a six-goal lead.

“In the first half, we played with a lot of heart and a lot of intensity and I’m not really sure what it was…they popped in a couple of quick ones and the wheels kind of fell off,” said Sharon coach Peter DeSisto.

The third quarter run was enough to hand Medway a 15-9 road win and continue Sharon’s struggles at the start of the season.

DeSisto said, “It just kind of snowballs. Defense is getting beat, offense is trying to go to the cage every time we touch it, so we just need to get better at our mental toughness.”

The Eagles showed resiliency in the first half. Bloom scored a pair of goals in the opening three minutes of the game to give Sharon a lead and Matt Cancian scored the first of his three goals to make it 3-1, but then Medway answered right back with five straight to lead 6-3 with 4:38 left to halftime.

The Eagles did not panic and started chipping away at the lead. Sophomore Brett Litner received a pass from Craiog Titus in the heart of the Medway defense, spun, and scored to make it 6-4. Thirty seconds later, Cancian scooped a ground ball in the attacking zone and drove at the cage before finishing past Medway goalie Tanner Pearl.

With 1:09 left in the half, Titus had his shot blocked by a defender in front, but the ricochet took it right to Cancian and the senior fired it home to tie the game. Evan Rackliff regained the lead for Medway but again Sharon had a response with Bloom taking a pass from Spencer Hall and taking his time to line up a rip and make it 7-7.

“It’s definitely there,” said DeSisto. “We have flashes where we’ve played as one team and when we do that we’re a dangerous team but when we don’t, just like any other team, we’re not a very good team when we play as individuals.”

Coming out of the break with an EMO, Medway took its time and scored with three seconds remaining on the penalty. Junior Jeffery Wenzel then added a third quarter hat trick to turn the lead from one goal to four. After a 2:00 penalty against the Eagles, Ben Steinhoff added his second of the quarter to make it 12-7.

“It absolutely kills us,” said DeSisto about the penalties, “and it just adds on to that discouragement that guys feel when we can’t possess the ball for a minute at a time because of all the penalties. That goes along with mental toughness; guys are getting frustrated and they start taking stupid penalties.”

Offensively, the Eagles started to grow impatient as the deficit widened. Cancian, Bloom, and Josh Rotman continued to get into decent positions but were not able to beat Pearl from distance. As the Mustangs continued to tack on goals, Sharon’s offense grew increasingly one-on-one.

“That’s one of our toughest challenges,” said DeSisto. “We do have a young defense, so it’s not unusual for us to go down a couple goals ion a short amount of time, but we just need to learn that it’s okay, it’s lacrosse, it’s the nature of the game, and we just need to be patient and play our game.”

The defensive unit, including freshman Coleman Loftus, sophomore Zach Reingold, junior Jared Zunenshine, and freshman LSM Sam Spencer, lacks varsity experience and the Medway attack took advantage.

Medway added a goal late in the third and Jake Tomsik turned and beat junior goalie Dan Spelfogel (six saves) to make it 14-7 early in the fourth. Titus scored with a lefty rip to end the run for the Mustangs, but Ross Cooperstein came right back with another goal.

The Eagles would wrap up the scoring with 1:59 remaining on arguably the prettiest goal of the day, even if it was only a consolation. Rotman played the ball to the edge of the crease and Jack Lesser took a quick touch before depositing a low-angle, behind-the-back shot past Pearl.

Sharon (1-4) will try to get on track on Thursday against Taunton.

CANTON

2015 Record: 11-7
2015 Finish: Reached D2 South Quarterfinals
Coach: Bill Bendell
The Bulldogs have won two Davenport division titles in the last three years and will be looking for a third in 2016. With a beefed up non-league schedule, Canton will be looking to make a deep run in the D2 South tournament this season.
“I really like this team and I think we will be very difficult to beat once we figure things out,” head coach Bill Bendell said. “Our goal this year is to trust the process…ignore the scoreboard and instead focus on doing your job to the best of your ability and the wins will follow.”
Canton will be relying on an experienced defense this season. Senior Chris Albert returns to the cage while senior Jake Ragusa and junior LSM Michael Pigeon will anchor the backline. Senior Dan Nadeau, junior Jonathan Sutton and sophomore Gabe Galeotos all saw time on defense last season and will fit in nicely again this year.
On offense, Ben O’Neill – one of the best offensive players in Canton history – enters the season with 125 career points. He’s got a high lacrosse IQ and can battle through defenses to find the net. Shaun Kirby, Dan Dillon, Bobby Mullaney and Eddie McCabe will all chip in with O’Neill offensively.

FOXBORO

2015 Record: 12-8
2015 Finish: Reached D2 Central/East Quarterfinals
Coach: Matt Noone
Foxboro graduated a handful of talented players last season but the biggest loss might be losing last year’s leading scorer Pat McCarthy to a knee injury this year. But with five seniors and plethora of youth, Warriors will look to try and claim their first Davenport title since 2011.
“You can’t replace Pat McCarthy, thankfully we still have his leadership, he will help the young guys,” Foxboro head coach Matt Noone said.
Connor McNamara and Brian Buckner are both entering their third year on varsity and will be relied upon heavily. McNamara is a factor at both sends of the field, Noone adding “He can carry us at times.” Buckner, a defenseman, possess great speed and positions himself well, Noone saying “His athleticism and IQ make him tough to beat on and off the ball.”
Foxboro will rely on Andrew Whalen, Louis Piccolo and James Silveria – all sophomores – on attack. McNamara will be complemented in the midfield by senior Austin Ryan and juniors Colin Spinney and Trey Guerrini. Noone called all three great athletes. Defensively, two year starters Tom Piccolo and Bobby Kierce will work alongside Buckner while sophomore Pat Kaveny has improved his game as well.
Expect sophomore Jake Addeche and junior Tyler Silveria to battle for the starting goalie job.

MILFORD

2015 Record: 2-17
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Ralph Bono
Milford will be looking to try and improve after recording just two wins in the 2015 season. New head coach Ralph Bono will try to turn things around in his first year at the helm.
The Scarlet Hawks graduated their two top scorers from last season in Nick Mobilia (30 points) and Spencer Lawson (19 points) so there will be some questions to answer up front.
In midfield, junior Alex Salamone registered 10 points last season and had 12 grounds balls while sophomore Andrew Gallagher made an impact with nine points in his rookie campaign. Jack Boyle, Nick Lurie and Ian Bucal all factored into the scoring last year as well.
Defensively, Harrison Bliss led the Scarlet Hawks defensemen in grounds balls as a sophomore while Andrew Palaria and Riley Burns also saw time. In goal, Pietro Bon Tempo made 123 saves last year in 17 games played and should provide some experience in the back.

OLIVER AMES

2016 Record: 6-10
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Chris DiGiacomo
After missing out on the playoffs last season, second year skipper Chris DiGiacomo will be relying on a large senior class to try to get back to the postseason.
“There is a lot of positive energy surrounding the program currently,” head coach Chris DiGiacomo said. “The boys have been working very hard, and we are very excited to get started.”
Senior attack Matt Gilson is back for his fourth year on varsity to pace the offense while senior Jake Aronson returns to man the goal for the Tigers. Senior captain middie Aidan Connly will be relied upon to take care of both ends of the field.
Connly will be joined by classmates Mike Sullivan, Jack Long, Connor Howe and Max Bamford so the Tigers will boast a very experienced midfield. On defense, senior Max Sheldon will anchor the backline in front of Aronson.

Sharon

2015 Record: 10-9
2015 Finish: Reached D2 Central/East First Round
Coach: Peter DeSisto
The Eagles are looking to get back to the top of the Davenport mountain and are hoping former Canton player Peter DeSisto will lead them there in his first year at the helm.
“I am really excited for this season, we are a young team but the captains and upperclassmen have really set the tone for this season,” DeSisto said. “They’re showing the newer players what it takes to be successful at this level. We’ve set high expectations for ourselves, but we know that if we come together as a unit and work hard we are completely capable of reaching our goals.”
After coming up just short in the division race last year, Sharon has a strong returning core to try to win the division for the second time in three years. Senior captains Mark Bloom and Craig Titus will be the focus of the attack again this year while sophomore Jon Greenberg will be back in goal after a terrific freshman campaign in 2015.
UMass commit Josh Rotman will be paired with senior captain Matt Cancian in the midfield to provide a power 1-2 punch while sophomores Spencer Hall and Chase Waxman will also see a lot of time in the middle of the field. Sharon will have to fill some holes defensively but expect junior Jared Zunenshine and sophomore Zach Reingold to step in.

Boys Soccer: 2015 Davenport Division Preview

By HockomockSports.com Staff

Canton

2014 Record: 9-7-2
2014 Finish: Reached MIAA D2 South First Round
Coach: Danny Erickson
The Bulldogs punched a ticket to the postseason for the 9th straight year and 2014 and with a good crop of returning and experienced players, a 10th straight trip is in the cards. Seniors Pat Hession and Joey Basile both have a good amount of experience and were key contributors to last year’s squad.
Although the Bulldogs will have the fill the void left with Hockomock League MVP Damian Kozak graduated, coach Danny Erickson seems to always have his team playing at a high level. Junior Sam Papakonstantino emerged as a strong threat last year and sophomore Jake Verille had a breakout rookie season and could become a top target for the Bulldogs.
Erickson said he hopes to keep possession better in 2015 and aim to pressure high to force mistakes from opponents. Sophomore Ben Waterhouse is someone who would be a big player this season while freshmen Griffin Roach and Paul Corcoran could make an impact in their first season.

Foxboro

2014 Record: 15-5-1
2014 Finish: Reached MIAA D3 South Semifinal
Coach: Joe Franchino
With only two starters from last year’s Davenport Division winning team gone, the Warriors are in good position to repeat and make a deep playoff push.
Foxboro has a new coach in Joe Franchino, who made 162 appearances for the New England Revolution, but don’t expect a lot to change with the Warriors. The 2014 HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year Joe Morrison is back to control the midfield and has the chance of being the best player in the league this year.
“I’ve inherited a great squad and they have worked really hard so far,” Franchino said. “They are making it difficult for me to pick a starting squad.”
The entire back four is back with Jeff Melo and Rob Lowey anchoring the middle while two-time Hockomock League All Star Devante Teixeira and his speed and skill will make it very hard for opponents to handle both him and Morrison. Franchino expects that they will get everyone’s best effort this year but with so much returning talent and a couple new faces, the Warriors are in good shape.

Milford

2014 Record: 5-11-2
2014 Finish: Missed Playoffs
Coach: Jim Asam
The Scarlet Hawks started off last season by going undefeated in the first four games but only earned two more wins the rest of the way. With a strong group of seniors set for this season, Milford will look to get back in the playoff picture.
Mike Da Silva returns for his fourth year patrolling Milford’s net and two-time captain Justin Borges, who is one of the more versatile players in the league, will be a player team’s will have to worry about coming forward from the midfield. On defense, senior Luis Goncalves is back to help and try limit the opportunities from opposing offenses.
Milford will also get Sttarley Flores back after missing the entire 2014 season with an injury while seniors Matt Fornaciari and John Martins and junior Marcelo Panno will all play vital roles for coach Jim Asam.

Oliver Ames

2014 Record: 13-6-2
2014 Finish: Reached MIAA D2 State Finals
Coach: John Barata
After reaching the D2 State Finals in 2014, the Tigers have plenty of returning talent back for this season. Chris Romero is one of the more tenured players in the league and is also one of the most versatile while fellow captain senior Keegan Nutt showed just how skilled he was last season in his first year.
“We are hoping to get into the MIAA tourney and we expect every game to be an all out battle,” head coach John Barata said. “We hope to compete well and get better everyday.”
Another experienced player back this season is junior Thomas McCormick, who has seen varsity time since his freshman year, as well as seniors Max Bamford, Jared Mallers and Max Ahearn. Sophomores Nathaniel Cardoza, Cam Vella, Matt Campbell and Jack Sheldon all saw a good amount of time as freshmen, with Cardoza emerging as one of OA’s best players. Although Foxboro is the favorite for the Davenport, the Tigers will likely be in the mix right until the end.

Sharon

2014 Record: 7-8-4
2014 Finish: Reached MIAA D2 South Preliminary Round
Coach: Bryan Kelly
After just two wins two years ago, the Eagles made it to the playoffs in coach Bryan Kelly’s first year in charge. With a good amount of returning talent, the Eagles will have a chance to compete for the Davenport title.
“This year we have a wealth of experience in all positions and returning players will be a major contributing factor,” head coach Bryan Kelly said. “We are a team that doesn’t have just one star but rather has 23 guys that will sub a lot and not lose skill in any position. This year will be an exciting year for Sharon soccer.”
The Eagles are hoping to improve their offense as they struggled to find consistency when it came to finding the back of the net. Senior captain Daniel Bender is back after missing all of last year and his presence in the center of the midfield could be a huge boost. Senior James Dunlea will also big a factor in the midfield and senior Sam Weidig will anchor the defense in the middle. HockomockSports.com Second Team goalie Andrew Filipkowski is back for his senior year while fellow varsity returnees Lucas Allaria and Mark Bloom will look to add some scoring punch. Kelly is hoping their speed will help give opponents fits while juniors Jake Teven, Ian Camilli and Shalin Patel are all new faces that could make a big impact.

Stoughton

2014 Record: 11-8-1
2014 Finish: Reached MIAA D2 South First Round
Coach: Aaron Salter
Over the past couple of seasons, the Black Knights have been headed in the right direction with the team making the playoffs last year for the first time in a decade. Aaron Salter takes over the program this year and will look to continue the push.
Salter will have a lot of experienced weapons back this season to continue the program’s upward trend. Goalie Kyle Silverman is back and Josh Mitchell, Will Peoples and Goddy Frombe will be key pieces in the middle of the field. All three have a lot of varsity minutes and their experience could be vital for Stoughton. Loubensky Lucas, who had an injury plagued sophomore year, will look to return back to the form he had during his freshman year (five goals). Another player to keep an eye on is Noah Schulze, who played a little bit of everything last year and could take on a much bigger role this year.
The Davenport is full of talent and might be one of the most competitive years since the split happened, but the Black Knights have enough talent that they won’t get lost in the mix.
