2018 Davenport Girls Soccer Preview

Canton

2017 Record: 10-6-2
2017 Finish: Reached Div. 2 South First Round.
Coach: Kate Howarth

Canton has been on the cusp of getting back to the top of the Davenport division in recent seasons and on their day the Bulldogs can be very difficult to play against. As one of the favorites for the league title this fall, consistency will be the biggest challenge for Canton as it tries to unseat North Attleboro at the top of the Davenport standings.

To get the attack in gear, Canton will be turning again to its youth. The Bulldogs will look to sophomores Olivia Rodman and Elisa Diletizia to run at opposing defenses and continue developing a partnership that was one of the most potent in the league last fall. Senior defender Sarah Collins will be the leader of the Canton defense, which will look to improve on the 34 goals allowed from last season. Junior Morgan McCabe will be stepping into a larger role this season, with her versatility as a forward or midfielder, and senior Julia Hamilton adds tenacity in the center of the pitch.

“I think this is going to be an exciting year for us, with strong players returning and some exciting new talent stepping in,” said Canton coach Kate Howarth. “Our goal as a group is to push passed being a really good team and become the great team we know we can be. The Hock is such a strong league and every team pushes each other to become better.”

Foxboro

2017 Record: 10-9-0
2017 Finish: Reached Div. 2 South First Round.
Coach: Katie Stalcup

Last year was a transition season for Foxboro under first-year head coach Katie Stalcup, as a group of talented young players made their debuts at the varsity level. The Warriors improved over the course of the season, made the playoffs, and now with a year of experience for a young squad there is a lot of buzz about Foxboro this fall.

The graduation of Lily Sykes, who was one of the league’s top players for all four years of her career, leaves big shoes to fill, but Foxboro has a number of players with potential to make up some of her production. Senior Mackenzi Fraser will be the main striker for Foxboro this year but sophomore Jordyn Collins will add speed on the wing and freshman Kaitryn Franchino will contribute up top as well. Junior Kendra Wentling returns in the midfield and freshman Kailee McCabe is a player to watch in the center of the pitch. Defensively, Foxboro has a lot of experience in senior Alex Stamatos, who will be joined in the back line by junior Yara Fawaz. Sophomore Morgan Sylvestre will be in net again this fall.

Stalcup praised the team’s tenacity and speed. She added, “I am very excited about this season. Even though we are still a young team, I think we will do very well. We have a team full of hard workers and great attitudes.”

Milford

2017 Record: 6-10-2
2017 Finish: Missed Playoffs.
Coach: Lou Colabello

For the past several seasons, Milford has been on the verge of getting back to the playoffs and now new coach Lou Colabello, who formerly coached at Douglas, will look to push the Hawks up the league standings with a number of experienced players in key positions.

The midfield will be patrolled by seniors Siena Pierce and Cassie Probert and junior playmaker Juliana France, who was named a league all-star as a sophomore and demonstrated the ability to cover a lot of ground in the middle of the pitch. The Hawks scored only 24 goals last season, so the attacking unit will be hoping to step it up this year, including senior Hannah Martin and junior Ashleigh Starks. The defense also has plenty of experience with junior Olivia Marshall back in goal and her classmates Maddie Boyle and Annie Flanagan in front of her to keep things organized at the back.

Colabello said, “We should have a solid midfield and many other players who can play different positions, and we expect big things from our returning goalkeeper. I feel this team is capable of competing with some of the elite teams in the league. There work ethics and attitude have been outstanding, thus I expect it will be a rewarding season and hopefully a playoff berth.”

North Attleboro

2017 Record: 14-3-3
2017 Finish: Reached Div. 1 South Quarterfinal.
Coach: Bill Wallace

North Attleboro will need a number of players to step into bigger roles this season, if the Rocketeers are going to make it three league titles in a row. North graduated 14 seniors and eight starters from last year’s team, but there are a number of familiar names and big contributors who are back and aiming for a three-peat.

The Rocketeers scored 60 goals last year and senior Ashlyn Gaulin contributed on 27 of those (17 goals and 10 assists). She will be the focal point of the attack this season, after the graduation of 100-point scorer Haley Guertin, and her sister Emma will try to provide the assists from the midfield. Seniors Kayla Pasquel and Haley Ferris will add to the experience in the center of the pitch for North and classmates Morgan Silver, Liz Smahi, Lexi Sinacola, and Lauren Pezzi will add depth in the midfield and defense. Seniors Sam Hawkins and Brieann Westcott will be at heart of the defensive unit with classmate Emma Noreck in goal.

North coach Bill Wallace said that sophomores Lydia Santos and Tess Collins will be contributors this season in midfield and attack. He added, “This group is a pleasure to work with, they want to work hard and get better.”

Sharon

2017 Record: 3-13-2
2017 Finish: Missed Playoffs.
Coach: Catherine Sullivan

Sharon alum Catherine Sullivan takes over the program this season, as the Eagles look to rebuild and work towards a return to the state tournament. With the graduation of Ali Filipkowski, Sharon lost a lot of firepower but Sullivan is excited about the potential and the growth of the team during the preseason.

One of the key returning players is senior goalie Lydia Chase, who is a fearless shot stopper and her distribution will be important for the Eagles’ transition game. In front of Chase, senior Rose Wald is back in the heart of the defense and will partner with sophomore Molly McAlevey, who is a newcomer to the varsity but already showing a lot of composure on the ball. The midfield engine is senior Maxine Gordon, who will drive the Eagles forward, and junior Bella Berger will add playmaking and vision in the center of the pitch. Senior Bridget McManus will be the main forward and she will be expected to not only provide goals but also set up her teammates and get others involved in the attack.

“As a Sharon graduate, I’m really excited about the opportunity to once again represent the maroon and gold,” said Sullivan. “I think this team has a lot of talent and athleticism, and we will be striving to create a cohesive group that can consistently compete at a higher level.”

Stoughton

2017 Record: 0-15-3
2017 Finish: Missed Playoffs.
Coach: Tara Daniels

Although Stoughton was unable to pick up an elusive league win last season, Black Knights coach Tara Daniels felt that there was progress from the team, particularly in attack. A group of speedy, young attackers made Stoughton a more dangerous team and that experience has Daniels hopeful for even more in 2018.

Speed on the edges is going to be a key strength for the Black Knights this season led by senior outside back Cintia Khouzami and sophomore Nikki Anderson, who has gained a lot of confidence after playing a lot of minutes as a freshman. In the heart of the defense, senior Corina Kavanagh will be the leader of the group, ensuring everyone is organized. Sophomore Mackenzie Manning is another player who grew a lot over the course of her rookie season and will again be the primary playmaker for the Black Knights and a key to keeping possession. Senior Gabriela Diaz played a lot at the back last season, but this year her speed will be utilized up front to create even more opportunities.

Daniels said, “Our strength this year is our speed; our team has many players that excel on the track in the off-season. Last year we made big strides offensively and this year we plan on using the speed of many players to help us continue the offensive push we need.”

WRENTHAM, Mass. – Throughout the 2018 season, King Philip junior Caroline Klim has emerged as one of the Warriors’ go-to goal scorers.

That was the case once again on Tuesday afternoon, as Klim scored nine goals, including the 100th of her career, to lead #5 King Philip past #12 Sharon, 16-8, in the first round of the MIAA D1 East Tournament.

“She’s one of those players that always has a chip on her shoulder, she’s confident that when she shoots that it’s going to go in and I’m glad we had some other girls play like that today as well,” said King Philip head coach Kourtnie Wilder about Klim.

Klim got off to a quick start, as just thirty seconds into the game she scored her first goal to put KP up 1-0, and a few minutes later Jessica Sullivan (four goals, assist) put the Warriors up to 2-0.

Rose Wald came up huge for Sharon throughout the first half with six saves, including three point-blank stops early in the first half. Sharon took advantage of their solid defensive play early, as Emma Eberhardt scored back-to-back goals just minutes apart to tie the score at two.

Klim scored her second goal of the game with 14:28 to play, and from their KP never looked back, scoring another seven unanswered goals and jumping out to a 10-2 lead early in the second half.

“We talked about getting off to a fast start today,” Wilder said .“We wanted this one for our seniors and didn’t want it to be their last game, and we played like it.”

With the game at 5-2, Klim scored her third goal of the game off a free-position, and minutes later scored again to give KP a 7-2 lead heading into the half. Just under a minute into the second half, Dana Truini scored off a free-position to extend the Warriors’ lead, and with 21:59 left to play Olivia Tormey scored to make the game 9-2. Sullivan scored her fourth goal of the game a few seconds later to put the finishing touches on the eight-goal KP run.

Sharon broke the drought with just over 18 minutes to go in the game when Eberhardt scored the third of her six goals on the game. A few minutes later, Sharon capitalized on a free position, as Maeve Barbera took advantage of the open space to find Lydia Chase wide open in front of the net to cut the lead to 10-4.

Klim scored her fifth goal of the game a few seconds later, and four minutes after that Sullivan found Alli Meehan for a goal to put the Warriors up 12-4.

Back-to-back goals by Klim, the second of which was the 100th of her career, would extend the KP lead to 14-4 with 4:41 left to play, but three straight Sharon goals, including two by Eberhardt, would give them some life with the score 14-7, but Klim’s eighth and ninth goals of the day ended any hope of a comeback.

With the win, King Philip moves on to play Lincoln-Sudbury at L-S on Thursday afternoon. L-S advanced with a 15-2 win over Mansfield on Tuesday afternoon. The winner of that game moves onto the D1 East semi-finals where they will play the winner of Natick-Walpole.

SHARON, Mass. – Colleen Carchedi is used to winning games in the postseason, but when she became the Sharon head coach three years ago, the postseason wasn’t something the Eagles were familiar with at all.

Not anymore.

Carchedi, a former standout player at King Philip and former assistant coach at Foxboro, and her sixth-seeded Eagles recorded the program’s first ever playoff win, holding off #11 Newton South for an 13-12 win.

Sharon built a big lead by halftime, taking a 9-3 advantage into the break, but had to hold off a furious rally from the Lions, including a late 8-meter attempt.

“We’re a more talented team than last year, we grow every year as a team now,” Carchedi said. “We have players that play throughout the year instead of just during the high school season. I think making the playoffs last year helped. I

“I think the kids are mentally stronger more than anything. They believe in each other, which wasn’t always the case in the past here.”

The Eagles qualified for the state tournament for the first time a year ago, but bowed in the first round after a competitive game with Bishop Feehan.

This time around, that experience paid off. Sharon scored four of the first five goals of the game, rattled off a 5-0 run to create separation in the first half, and came up with a timely goal and timely stop in the final three minutes.

Sharon opened the scoring with a pair of nearly identical goals less than a minute apart. Senior Anna Crosby found classmate Alex Rabb cutting right in front and she quickly put the Eagles up 2-0.

After Newton South cut the lead in half, Crosby grabbed her third point of the game. She took possession and rounded the net, taking an angle and firing. Shot in the back of the net. Minutes later, Crosby had the ball knocked out in a sea of defenders but quickly scooped the ground ball and fired from in close to make it 4-1.

The Lions netted back to-back goals to cut the deficit to a single goal once again, but that’s when Sharon had its most impressive run of the game.

Sophomore Emma Eberhardt dodged one defender and bounced her shot in to make it 5-3. Eberthardt grabbed her second shortly after, faking a spin move then faking a shot up high before going low to make it 6-3.

Rabb netted her third goal of the game, weaving through three defenders from behind the goal and tucking one it to make it 7-3. The Eagles tallied twice more in the final two minutes with Eberhardt and Rabb each scoring once more to take a 9-3 lead into the break.

As well as Sharon finished the first half, Newton South seized the momentum in the second half. The Lions and Eagles traded goals early on, but a 3-0 run from the visitors quickly closed the gap to 10-7.

As Newton South looked for a fourth straight goal, the Lions had their offensive possession come to an end due to a great defensive play from Lydia Chase gave Sharon the ball back.

The Eagles took advantage of that and snapped the run when Sabrina Robbins grabbed a ground off a save and found the back of the net to make it 11-7.

The teams once again traded goals with Eberhardt giving Sharon a 12-8 advantage with 8:22 to play.

But once again, Newton South had another offensive run. The Lions netted three straight goals over a two minute span, closing the gap to just one, 12-11, with just over four minutes to play.

“It was a good sign that we didn’t give up the lead,” Carchedi said. “We have a couple of stall plays that gave us some time. But when we needed some goals, I told them no more calling plays, just play your game cause they all know what to do.”

Sharon came away with a big draw win and took off over a minute of game time with its next offensive possession. Rabb buried her fifth of the game with three minutes to play to restore the Eagles’ two-goal lead.

“She’s the type of player that comes through when you need her,” Carchedi said of Rabb. “She had to switch up her shot some today because the Newton South goalie was pretty good. But she’s capable of doing that mid-game and came through.”

Newton South closed the gap to one again with 1:42 to play but couldn’t beat Sharon goalie Rose Wald (eight saves) the rest of the way. The Eagles’ defense came up with a big turnover and on Newton South’s final offensive possession, the Lions had an 8-meter attempt with 11 seconds to play but a false start gave Sharon the ball back.

“Rose had an awesome game but she was a huge difference maker in the first half especially,” Carchedi said of Wald, who made five big saves in the first half. “She really stood out and played great in the first half which helped us get the lead.”

Sharon girls lacrosse (15-4) advances to the D1 East quarterfinals to take on #3 Westford Academy. The game is set for Thursday, June 1st at 6:30.

CANTON
2015 Record: 7-12
2015 Finish: Reached Div. 1 South first round
Coach: Chrissy O’Connor

There is a new coaching staff for the Canton girls’ lacrosse this season and first-year head coach Chrissy O’Connor is looking forward to surprising a few people with a strong spring.

Seniors Casey Bradley (attack) and Olivia Devoe (midfield) will be the team leaders and the keys to the Bulldogs making a charge at Foxboro for the league title. Sophomore midfielder Molly Colburn and freshman Leah McClellan will be newcomers to watch this year as well.

O’Connor said, “I think the league will be surprised with Canton’s tenacity this season.  They are a confident and smart group of athletes who have handled having a new coaching staff extremely well.  This should be an exciting season for Canton lacrosse.”

FOXBORO
2015 Record: 14-7-1
2015 Finish: Reached Div. 2 East semifinal
Coach: Brittany Sherry

At the end of last year’s Div. 2 East semifinal, Foxboro coach Brittany Sherry was emotional about losing the crop of seniors that had joined the program the same year she began. That group had won four straight league titles and gone further than any other team in program history. But when Sherry was asked about the future, she was confident in the talent coming back and believed that her fifth season could be another title-winning spring.

Senior Melissa Lynch was a standout in goal last year and will be back between the pipes and will have a strong defensive core in front of her including junior Hallie Canfield and senior Annie McGeary. Offensively, Foxboro will be looking for continued development from junior Lauren Flahive and sophomore Catherine Luciano, who will both be asked to fill in for senior Chloe Hurley, who begins the season with an injury.

Young players helped Foxboro on its run to the semifinal and freshman Sophia Dicenso is the next in line to try and make an instant impact for the Warriors. Juniors Ally Curran and Molly Farrell could also be poised for breakout seasons.

All eyes are on the matchup with Franklin in May, as the two teams have won their respective divisions each of the past four years, but Foxboro also has Hingham, Medfield, and Walpole on its schedule as it sets its sights on another tournament run.

MILFORD
2015 Record: 2-16
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Jason Gelmini

Milford comes into the new season with a young roster after losing eight seniors from last year’s squad and head coach Jason Gelmini is hoping that the many underclassmen who saw playing time in 2015 will be ready to step into bigger roles in 2016.

The Hawks will be led by senior midfielders Morgan Smith and Julie Dam and senior defender Erin Fleming and Gelmini is counting on his captains to provide leadership. In addition, the Hawks will lean on junior defender Brainna Croteau, junior goalie Hannah Cairney, junior middie Jillian Burley, and junior attackers Taylor Dube and Jordyn Lombardo.

Gelmini said, “We definitely have a young team this year, so our goals are to get better each game and compete each time we step on the field.”

OLIVER AMES
2015 Record: 10-9
2015 Finish: Reached Div. 1 East preliminary round
Coach: Craig Gardner

Oliver Ames is coming off a strong season in which the Tigers reached the Div. 1 East sectional before falling to Bishop Feehan in the opening round. This year, OA has a lot of returning players who experienced what a playoff run was like and head coach Craig Gardner is counting on that experience to pay dividends this spring.

The Tiger will be led by a strong senior class, including midfielder Erin Fitzgerald and defenders Cassie Gavin and Sarah Lewis. Senior attackers Abby Duvall and Sam Lang will help Fitzgerald provide attacking power while senior midfielder Carly Cidado and junior defender Katie Davenport will help lock things down at the back.

Gardner also noted a few young players that could be impact players this season, including sophomores Sofia Masciarelli, Chloe Kilkelly, and Ariana Waldorf and junior Kendall Clifford. Freshman defender Olivia Piazza will also be a newcomer to watch this season.

“We have a very strong and focused group of experienced upperclassmen athletes, coupled with some strong developing underclassmen athletes,” said Gardner. “The team has great chemistry, which I hope translates into a competitive season for us.”

SHARON
2015 Record: 7-10
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Colleen Manning

Sharon had a program best record of 7-10 last season under first-year coach Colleen Manning, who is expecting the Eagles to take an even bigger leap this year by making the postseason for the first time.

Sharon only has three seniors (Alex Miller, Alexa Levitt, and Heather Seggelin), but plenty of young talent including “top shooter” Alex Rabb, attacker Anna Crosby, and defender Samantha Rabb (all juniors).

Sophomore Sabrina Robbins is drawing attention from colleges and will be a force for the Eagles on draw controls, while freshman Lydia Chase will add a new face to the Sharon defense.
