Baseball
Attleboro, 7 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – Attleboro cashed in for four runs in the fifth inning and junior Jonny Pagano had another strong start as the Bombardiers landed a rivalry win at Community Field over North. Cooper Johnson had a big day for the visitors, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, including a two-run triple in Attleboro’s big fifth inning. Danny Johnon added two hits — both doubles — and an RBI while Peter DelPozzo and Andrew Gorman each drove in a run in the win. Pagano allowed two runs on four hits and two walks, striking out five in six innings for the win. Jackson Huntington struck out a pair in the bottom of the seventh to get the save. Sophomore Gio Martello had a two-run home run for North in the seventh to cut the deficit down to three; Jordan Paradis had a hit and two runs and Derek Maceda had a hit and an RBI for North.

Canton, 0 @ Mansfield, 5 – Final – Behind a strong start from Connor Curtis and some early offense, Mansfield clinched at least a share of the Davenport division title with a 5-0 win over Canton. Curtis was lights out as he tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out 11. The Hornets scored once in the first (Sam Martin RBI single to score Conner Zukowski, who had a leadoff double) and twice more in the second (a two-out, two-run double from Aiden Jones) for a 3-0 lead. That was enough support for Curtis but Mansfield tacked on two more in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Jake Maydak and an error. Will Lund had a strong day at the dish, going 2-for-3 with a run scored for Mansfield.

Foxboro, 7 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – Foxboro kept itself in contention for the Davenport crown by landing a 7-3 win at Frothingham Park over OA. Locked in a 1-1 game after five innings, the Warriors’ offense came alive with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to secure the win. OA took the lead in the first on an RBI triple from Patrick Finnerty but Foxboro evened things out in the third on a two-out RBI single from Tyler Prescott. In the top of the sixth, Prescott led off with a walk and came home to score on a double from Ryan LeClair, who then scored after a single from Ryan O’Leary to make it 3-1. Louis Carangelo smacked a two-run double to extend Foxboro’s lead to 5-1. OA cut into the deficit in the bottom half on RBIs from Drew Hall and Ryan Lemay but the Warriors pulled away for good with two runs in the top of the seventh. Mat Sullivan earned the win for the Warriors, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks, striking out three in 5.1 innings of work. Sean O’Leary tossed a scoreless seventh inning to close the door, striking out a pair.

Franklin, 5 @ Milford, 2 – Final – Franklin tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth and then pushed three more across in the top of the seventh to secure a win at Fino Field. The Panthers (RBI groundout from Henry Digirogio) and the Scarlet Hawks (Louis Congisli RBI) traded runs in the first inning before the hosts jumped ahead on an RBI single from Joey McGee in the fourth inning to make it 2-1. Eisig Chin drew a one-out walk in the sixth and came around to score after an infield error to make it 2-2 after six innings. In the top of the seventh, Luke Sidwell and Ethan DePaolo had infield singles, and Rex Cinelli reached on an error to load the bases. Ryan Gerety brought all three home, clearing the bases with a triple to hand Franklin a 5-2 lead. Dillon Cashin (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K), who earned the win in relief, worked around a two-out single to close the door. Austin Campbell pitched well in the no-decision, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks, striking out seven in 4.2 innings. Damien Carter pitched well for the Hawks, allowing just two earned runs on five hits and three walks in six innings while Ian Carter tossed a scoreless inning in relief, striking out three.

King Philip, 0 @ Taunton, 2 – Final – Taunton sophomore Johnny Escobalez had another stellar outing on the mound as the Tigers emerged on the winning side of a pitcher’s duel against King Philip. Escobalez only allowed two hits — a one out single in the top of the fifth and a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but both were canceled out on a double play in the next at-bat. Escobalez also issued just two walks while striking out five in a complete game shutout. Dwayne Burgo handed Taunton a 1-0 lead with a two-out single to score Dawson Bryce (leadoff triple) in the second inning, and the Tigers added a key insurance run in the fourth on Burgo’s double that scored Sean Murphy (two-out single). Rudy Gately pitched very well in the loss, scattering eight hits and no walks for two runs, striking out five in six innings.

Sharon, 6 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Sharon turned 11 hits into six runs, and Alex Coughlin had a strong start as the Eagles completed a season sweep of Stoughton. Sharon scored a single run in the first, fourth, and fifth innings, and pushed across three runs in the third. Drew Yaffe paced the offense with three hits, including a double, and two runs scored, Seth Bonner went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Luke Meixel drove in a pair of runs in the win. Liam Conway and Garrett Labbe each had a double and an RBI for Sharon. Coughlin tossed a complete game with one run (unearned) allowed on four hits and one walk, striking out nine. Sean Farley and Jeriel Cuello (RBI) each had two hits for Stoughton.

Softball
North Attleboro, 3 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Maddie Bailey smacked a key triple and Ari McDavitt drove in a key insurance run in the seventh to help the Rocketeers land a win over rival Attleboro. Kelly Colleran struck out 15, facing just three over the limit in a 96-pitch two-hitter to earn the win in the circle. McDavitt scored North’s first run on a double steal in the third inning, and then Julia Forman came home to score on Bailey’s RBI triple an inning later. In the seventh, Bailey singled, took third on Colleran’s ground rule double, and scored on McDavitt’s single.

Milford, 9 @ Franklin, 10 – Final – Milford surged ahead with four runs in the top of the sixth but Franklin responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a dramatic comeback win. Down to their last out, Franklin cashed in on a passed ball, an RBI single from Katy Liberman, an RBI double from Dana Stott, and the game-winning hit from Carly Pellegri in the form of a single to left to bring Stott home for the winning run. Senior Reece Allen, who helped ignite the rally with a double, had a team-high three hits and one run scored, Sarah Boozang went 2-for-4 with two runs and athree RBI, and Kiera Kotwicki (RBI, two runs), Avery Chalk (RBI, run), Pellergri (RBI), and Stott (RBI, run) each had two hits in the win. Olivia Baglione (four runs) and Cae Pellegrini (double, triple, three RBI, two runs) each ad three hits for the Hawks while Maeve Williams and Jianna Fernandes chipped in with a hit and an RBI apiece.

Taunton, 0 @ King Philip, 1 – Final (10 Inn.)

Stoughton, 24 @ Sharon, 3 – Final (5 inn.) – Alyssa Edwards had a big day at the plate for the Black Knights, going 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBI to lead Stoughton to a win at Sharon. Kerry Driscoll, Anna Hobbs, and Camryn Whitman each had two hits for Stoughton.

Boys Lacrosse
Attleboro, 4 @ Mansfield, 17 – Final – Cody Gordon scored five times and the Hornets held Attleboro to just four goals to pick up the win that clinches the program’s first Davenport title (in its first season in the division) and first league title since 2012. Nico Smith added three goals and dominated the face-off X. Drew Sacco scored twice and set up a pair of goals, Grady Sullivan had two goals, and Tommy Smith and Andrew Burnham each had two goals and a helper. Andrew DeGirolamo had a goal and an assist. Ryan DeGirolamo had another strong game in goal with 11 saves.

Canton, 3 @ King Philip, 15 – Final

Oliver Ames, 9 @ Foxboro, 3 – Final – Oliver Ames staked a 4-1 lead at halftime and never looked back for its first win over Foxboro in at least a decade. Ben Reardon anchored a balanced attack for the Tigers with a hat trick while Ryan Jaco, Shaun Teehan, and Victor Romeiro each found the back of the net twice. Jake Manthous had a strong showing at the X, winning 13-of-16 faceoffs while Noah Isleib shined in net with 17 saves. Jack Sullivan, Finn Stapleton, and Conor Noone each scored once for the Warriors.

Taunton, 3 @ Franklin, 22 – Final

Sharon, 10 @ North Attleboro, 11 – Final (OT)

Girls Lacrosse
Mansfield, 9 @ Attleboro, 8 – Final (OT) – Ava Adams scored off a feed from Lola Varricchione to give Mansfield the come-from-behind, overtime win and clinch a playoff spot for the Hornets. Adams had a hat trick, while Varricchione had three goals, three assists, and five draw controls (including the one that gave Mansfield possession in OT). Brooke Butler added a pair of goals, Rose Maher had a goal and an assist. Caitlyn Zajac came up with 11 big saves for the Hornets, who rallied from a 5-3 halftime deficit to force the extra period.

King Philip, 20 @ Canton, 7 – Final – King Philip jumped out to a 7-3 lead by halftime and kept the offense rolling in the second to land a 20-7 verdict over the Bulldogs. Makenzie McDevitt’s fingerprints were all over the win as she recorded 12 points in the win; Nikki McDonald added seven points, Kelly Holmes chipped in with four points, Abby MacDonald added three points, and both Sarah Brown and Sammy Cloutier recorded a pair of points apiece. Kaitlyn Parish recorded nine saves in net in the win. Devan Spinale and Nora Giannacopoulos paced Canton with two goals apiece, Kayleigh Koen, Maggie Dailey, and Emily McCabe each scored once, and Ashley Balunas made nine saves in net for the Bulldogs.

Foxboro, 18 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final – Eight Warriors recorded a point and Foxboro clinched sole possession of the Davenport division with a win on the road. Paige Curran continued to torment opposing defenses as she scored seven goals along with two assists, Mya Waryas added four goals and one assist, and both Mary Collins (assist) and Val Beigel (two assists) each scored twice. Morgan Riley, Addie Riley, and Cate Noone each added one goal apiece while Grace Riley had one assist. Audrey Campbell made seven saves in net for Foxboro.

Franklin, 20 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – Franklin completed yet another perfect league season, taking down Taunton on the road. Jamie Tanner recorded her 100th career point in the win while Hannah Blongstainer and Riley Cross each scored their first goal of the season.

Mansfield, 5 @ Canton, 0 – Final – Mansfield emerged from a pair of competitive doubles matches with wins to complete a 5-0 sweep of the host Bulldogs. Neema Khosravani dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 first singles win, Iniyan Karruppusami didn’t drop a game in a clean 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles, and Jesse Colchamiro emerged from third singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The first doubles team of Josh Weiner and Jacob Weiner snagged a 7-5, 6-4 win while James Kennedy paired with Dhruv Jain for a 6-4, 6-3, second doubles win.

Stoughton, 0 @ Sharon, 5 – Final – Seniors Mihir Basil and Michael Wang emerged from a hard-fought second doubles match with a straight-set win, helping the Eagles land a sweep of visiting Stoughton. Jacob Slavsky (6-0, 6-0), Matthew Lally (6-0, 6-0), and Kevin Li (6-1, 6-3) earned singles wins for the hosts while seniors Rithvik Neti and Hyojae Park grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 win at first doubles. Basil and wang prevailed 7-5, 6-4 at second doubles.

North Attleboro @ Attleboro, 3:45

Canton, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Canton won three-set matches at second singles and second doubles to edge the Hornets and sweep the season series. Camila Cutter got the Bulldogs off to a good start with a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles, but Mansfield’s Caroline Guravage won in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) at third singles to even the match. Mansfield a three-set match at first doubles, as Jillian Hanley and Savannah Carey beat Kelli Woodworth and Grace Powers 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. Canton took second doubes when Panayiota Michaelidis and Liv McCloskey rallied after dropping the first set against Rachel Goldman and Anushka Srivastava (6-3) by winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-1. At second singles, Olivia Durham was able to outlast Claire Copp to earn the decisive point. Copp won the opening set 6-3, but Durham came back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4.

Baseball
Attleboro, 5 vs. Bishop Feehan, 4 – Final – After seeing its two-run lead disappear in the top of the seventh, Attleboro rallied to plate one in the bottom half and walk off with a win over non-league rival Bishop Feehan. The visiting Shamrocks scored once in the first and once in the third to carry a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning but back-to-back RBIs from Andrew Gorman and Casey Victorio brought the Bombardiers level. An inning later, Matt Harvie smacked an RBI double to put Attleboro ahead for the first time and Ran Martin followed with an RBI single to score Jackson Huntington (walk) to make it 4-2. Bishop Feehan came through with two outs in the top of the seventh to tie the game but Attleboro once again had an answer. Huntington led off with a walk and moved to second on a single from Victorio. Pinch runner Owen Lombardo moved to third on a fielder’s choice then sprinted home on a wild pitch for the winning run. Jonny Pagano pitched well with just two runs allowed on seven hits and one walk, striking out eight in six innings. Danny Johnson earned the win in relief pitching the seventh inning.

Taunton, 11 vs. Shrewsbury, 1 – Final (6 Inn.) – In a big non-league test against another team ranked in the top 10 in Division 1, Taunton passed with flying colors. The Tigers wasted little time as they plated a pair of runs in the first and then added three runs in second, two more in the fifth, and ended the game with a four-run sixth inning. Braden Sullivan led the hit parade for the hosts, accounting for three of Taunton’s 14 hits on the day. Sullivan also scored three runs while Brayden Cali (RBI, two run), Ryan MacDougall (three RBI), and Dwayne Burgo (triple, two RBI, run) each had two hits. Taunton sophomore Johnny Escobalez had his second straight strong showing on the mound, allowing just one run (unearned) on three hits and no walks, striking out 10 in six innings.

Milford, 11 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final (5 Inn.) – Milford junior Sean McGee had a huge day at the plate with three hits and four RBI, leading the Scarlet Hawks to a big win on the road. McGee finished 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI double in the sixth that pushed Milford’s lead to double-digits. He was one of six Hawks with an RBI; senior Evan Cornelius and sophomore Nick Koch both had a double and two RBI, and Damien Carter (triple), Tony Fontes, and Brady Butler each had one RBI. Anthony LaPierre got the win for the visitors, allowing one run on three hits and a walk, striking out five in four innings while Mason Baldic tossed a scoreless inning in relief. Stoughton’s Hunter Malkin went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for the Black Knights.

Canton, 0 @ Franklin, 7 – Final – Franklin took an early lead with three runs in the first three innings and then pulled away for good with a four-run sixth inning in a win over Canton. Foxboro, 4 @ Mansfield, 13 – Final – Ryan DeGirolamo continued his strong season in the cage, making 22 saves and the Hornets pulled out an important division win. Aidan Steele led a strong defensive effort by Mansfield, holding Foxboro to just four goals. Tommy Smith sparked the offense for the hosts, with four goals and three assists. Andrew Burnham aded a hat trick and a pair of assists, Andrew DeGirolamo scored twice and assisted another, and Drew Sacco had two goals and two assists. Mansfield also got goals from Grady Sullivan and Cody Gordon, who set up two other scores.

Milford, 0 @ Franklin, 20 – Final

King Philip, 15 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final – King Philip and Oliver Ames were locked in a two-goal battle at halftime but the Warriors controlled the second half and pulled away from the win. Donovan DeVellis (two assists) and Noah Minkwitz paced the KP offense with four goals apiece while Hayden Schmitz had a game-high seven points with three goals and four helpers. Mason Thompson added two goals and one assist, Cullen McCarthy (two assists) and Justin Kosh each scored once, and both Tommy Kilroy (two assists) and Alex Viscusi (one assist) each recorded a helper. Ben Reardon led OA with three goals while Ryan Jaco had one goal and an assist. James Boldy had 12 saves and one assist for KP while Noah Isleib made 15 saves for the Tigers.

Taunton, 2 @ North Attleboro, 17 – Final – Taunton senior Colt Kennedy scored both of the goals for the Tigers while freshman goalie Oren Cullins came up with 17 saves.

Girls Lacrosse
Attleboro, 15 @ Sharon, 5 – Final – Attleboro’s Molly Moore, Amelia Collins, and Isabella Cavallini each scored a hat trick to lead the Bombardiers to a big win on the road at Sharon. Cavallini also had three assists to finish with a team-high six pints, Addison Papagolos added two goals and one helper, Jordan Mooney chipped in with four points (one goal, three assists), and Gabriela Sprovieri had one goal and two assists. Peyton McAuliffe made seven saves in net for the Bombardiers.

Canton, 16 @ Stoughton, 2 – Final – Canton had nine different players find the back in the net in their first matchup with neighboring Stoughton, recording a 16-2 win. Emily McCabe, Devan Spinale, and Kayleigh Koen led the charge with three goals apiece.

Mansfield, 6 @ Foxboro, 18 – Final – Foxboro celebrated senior night with a big win over rival Mansfield, including a monster performance from senior Paige Curran. Curran found the back of the net seven times and had two assists to lead the charge. Val Beigel and Mya Waryas each had three goals and three assists, Mary Collins added two goals, Cate Noone set the offense in motion with one goal and six assists, and both Addie Riley and Grace Riley scored once each. Audrey Campbell made three saves in net for the Warriors.

Franklin, 23 @ Milford, 3 – Final – Carly Haley scored a pair of goals and Emily Croteau added one for the Scarlet Hawks.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ King Philip, 19 – Final – Nicole MacDonald led the way for the Warriors with five goals and Alyssa Legere added four scores and an assist. Makenzie McDevitt had a hat trick and dished out a helper, while Lauren Obara found the back of the net for her first varsity goal. Catie Wilson had the lone goal for the Tigers.

North Attleboro, 17 @ Taunton, 7 – Final – For Taunton, Maddi Szala and Cali Melo each scored a pair of goals while Hailey Tanguay, Raquel Azevedo, and Talia O’Leary each scored once. Caroline Bizinha and Taryn Campbell also had an assist while Mel Jesus made 13 saves for the Tigers.

Boys Tennis
King Philip, 1 vs. Bishop Feehan, 4 – Final – Arjun Kollu was the lone winner for the host Warriors, emerging from a tightly-contested second singles match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win.

Sharon, 2 vs. Martha’s Vineyard, 3 – Final – Sharon put up a great fight against powerhouse Martha’s Vineyard with four matches going three sets but the Eagles ultimately fell just short, 3-2. Junior Alex Budovalcev rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles for the Eagles, and the team of Joel Zwicker and Kevin Li added a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at second doubles. Sharon went to three sets in the other three matches, and fell by just two games in each of them.

Mansfield, 2 vs. Westwood, 3 – Final – Mansfield earned a pair of wins from singles action but it was Westwood that swept doubles and had one singles win to get the match. Neema Khosravani picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at first singles and Iniyan Karruppusami added a 7-5, 6-3 win at third singles.

Girls Tennis
Milford, 1 @ Canton, 4 – Final – Canton took a pair of wins from both singles and doubles play to defend home court, 4-1, against visiting Milford. Camila Cutter dropped just two games total on her way to a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles while Olivia Durham prevailed from a hard-fought battle at second singles with a 6-4, 7-5 win. The team of Grace Powers and Kelli Woodworth added a 6-3, 7-5 win at first doubles for the Bulldogs, and Panayiota Michaelidis and Liv McCloskey overcame a one-set deficit to secure a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at second doubles. Milford’s Mallory Brickley rallied from a one-set deficit for a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at third singles.

King Philip, 0 @ Bishop Feehan, 5 – Final

Sharon, 4 vs. Martha’s Vineyard, 1 – Final – Sharon secured one of its best wins of the season, taking down visiting Martha’s Vineyard with a 4-1 verdict. Navya Shukla was impressive in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles and Ale Aguilar added a 7-6, 3-2 (default) win at third singles. The Eagles swept both doubles matches with Olivia Landstein and Sophia Oh taking a 6-2, 6-1 decision at first doubles and the team of Abby Vilk and Jenny Sand dominated in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at second doubles.

Mansfield, 0 @ Westwood, 5 – Final

Boys Volleyball
King Philip, 3 @ Norton, 1 – Final

Taunton, 3 @ Brockton, 2 – Final – Taunton rallied to win two sets in a row to overcome a 2-1 deficit, taking a 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 16-25, 25-17, 15-11) win over host Brockton. Bradley Hylander was the heart of the Taunton defense with 24 digs and Ty Ekstrom set the offense in motion with 33 assists, adding five digs and two aces. Matt Freitas was the go-to option at the net with 21 kills, adding eight digs and four aces while Owen Kelley added 11 kills, 13 digs, and two ace, Erick Foster chipped in with 10 kills and three blocks, and Alvin Morisseau and Josh Duncan each finished with five kills apiece.

Attleboro, 1 @ Taunton, 4 – Final – Shawn Cali had a strong performance on the mound and the Tigers used early offense to score a 4-1 win over a tough Attleboro squad. Cali only allowed one hit and one walk in six shutout innings, striking out four to earn the win. Taunton senior Dawson Bryce had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, hitting an RBI double in both the first and third innings. Ryan MacDougall also had an RBI double in the third and AJ Lewis scored Jared Spencer with a single two at-bats later. Jonny Pagano pitched well for Attleboro, scattering eight hits and two walks, striking out two in five innings of work. Sean O’Hara tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Bombardiers while Andrew Gorman had a seventh inning RBI single.

Canton, 2 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – OA scored twice in the third and once more in the fourth and was able to pull out its second league win of the season. Ryan Lemay (double) and Drew Hall each drove in runs for the Tigers, while Harrison Fitzpatrick, Jack Morley, and Matt Lawson (double) each provided hits. Andrew Zagami made the three runs stand up by holding the Bulldogs to just four hits and two runs in a complete game win. The Bulldogs scored once in the fifth and the seventh to get back within one. Brendan Clegg had a pair of hits and Andrew Gillis and Hayden Rose each drove in runs for Canton. Kyle Redquest had a strong start in defeat, allowing two earned runs over six innings.

Foxboro, 12 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final (5 Inn.) – Foxboro sophomore Tom Watts was solid on the mound and the Warriors’ offense exploded for 12 runs over a three-inning span in a win at Stoughton. Watts allowed one run on three hits and five walks, striking out a pair in four innings to get the win while Pradyu Gubbala threw a perfect inning in relief. Sophomore Ryan O’Leary had a huge day at the dish, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Sean O’Leary (RBI, three run), Louis Carangelo (two RBI, three runs), and Ben Angelini (RBI, two runs) each had two hits in the win.

King Philip, 3 @ Milford, 1 – Final – King Philip was held to just three hits but the Warriors rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun Milford. KP was held to a single in the third and a single that was thrown out at second in the fifth, but its offense came through in the clutch. Freshman Johnny Prater drew a lead off walk and moved to second when Max Robison was hit by a pitch with one out. Matt Kelley delivered the big hit, roping a double to left to bring both runners home to put KP ahead for the first time. Kelley, who advanced to third on the throw, came home for the third run on a wild pitch. Milford took the lead in the bottom of the second as sophomore Joe Butler was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored when classmate Joey McGee reached on an error. Rudy Gately kept the Warriors in the game with a strong pitching performance, allowing just the one run on five hits and two walks, earning the win with six strikeouts in six innings. Sophomore Nate Pennini earned the save, working around a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh for a scoreless inning. Milford’s Evan Cornelius surrendered three runs on three hits and five walks, striking out an impressive 16 batters in a complete game effort.

Sharon, 4 @ Mansfield, 5 – Final – Mansfield’s late game heroics continued on Monday as the Hornets walked off with a win over an upset-minded Sharon squad. Junior Matt DeShiro had a one-out double to right and came around to score on the game-winning single from classmate Jake Maydak. Sharon jumped out to a three-run lead, pushing across a pair in the top of the first on an RBI single from Jake Loomis, who came around to score himself on an error. The Eagles tacked on another run in the third on an RBI double from Palash Raina. Mansfield rallied to tie it in the bottom half when Dylan Saraceno scored on a wild pitch, DeShiro brought in a run with an RBI ground out, and Maydak reached on an error to score Sam Martin. Mansfield took its first lead, 4-3, on a single from sophomore Luke Rogan. Sharon pulled level in the top of the sixth on another RBI double from Loomis to make it 4-4. Cole Arundale pitched well for the Eagles, allowing five runs (two earned) on nine htis and a walk, striking out three in 6.1 innings. DeShiro also earned the win on the mound, tossing a scoreless seventh inning in relief. Maydak had a strong start, allowing four runs (two earned) on hour hits and a walk, striking out eight.

Softball
Taunton, 9 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Taunton sophomore Cate Larson dazzled in the circle in a dominant performance and the Tigers’ offense did almost all of its damage in a big fourth inning to secure a win on the road over Attleboro. Larson allowed just two hits and didn’t issue a walk, striking out an impressive 18 batters in a complete game. The Tigers plated eight runs in the fourth inning and the offense was highlighted by two hits apiece from Bella Bourque (two RBI, two runs), Hayley Krockta (two RBI, two runs), and Mia Fernandes (two RBI). Ava Venturelli also had a hit, a walk, an RBI and a run scored for Taunton. Lily Routhier and Rylie Camacho each had a hit for the Bombardiers.

North Attleboro, 4 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – Kelly Colleran matched her program record with 19 strikeouts in seven innings, facing two batters over the limit and allowing just one hit, to pick up a bounce-back win for the Rocketeers. She also hit a solo homer, scored two runs, and drew three walks. Maddie Bailey had a hit and scored a run, Molly Willey drove in a pair, and Julia Forman scored what turned out to be the game-winning run. Lucy Palmer and Arianna McDavitt each had hits for North.

Milford, 1 @ King Philip, 15 – Final (5 inn.) – King Philip caught fire in the second inning, highlighted by senior Sarah Cullen’s grand slam, and the Warriors landed a big win over visiting Milford. Cullen had a big day at the plate with a pair of hits and the big home run — both coming in KP’s 13-run second inning. Freshman Ali Gill (2-for-4, two RBI, two runs) also had a home run in the inning. Junior Ava Kelley was a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs while junior Jordan Bennett went 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. Junior Sydney Burch and sophomore Liv Petrillo also had two RBI for KP. Freshman McCoy Walsh earned the win, allowing one run on two hits and four walks, striking out five in five innings. Junior Maeve Williams had an RBI single in the top of the fourth to score freshman Angelina Bonina.

Mansfield, 11 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Mansfield plated five runs off four hits — all with two outs — in the first inning and never looked back in a win over Sharon. The Hornets ended with 12 hits, scoring once in each the second, fourth, and sixth before adding three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Avery Lake and Jill Koppy paced the offense with three hits apiece while Dani Jameson and Reilly Slaney each had two hits, and Allie Koppy and Callie Lake each had one. Jameson earned the win for the Hornets, scattering six hits while striking out seven. Ally Foulsham struck out six in a complete game effort and had an RBI for the Eagles.

Boys Lacrosse
Canton, 20 @ Taunton, 4 – Final – For Taunton, Izzy Cru z had two goals and an assist to pace the offense while Oren Cullins played well in net, making 14 saves for the Tigers.

Foxboro, 10 @ Hopkinton, 5 – Final – A pair of goals late in the first half helped Foxboro grab some momentum and the Warriors carried it into the second, dominating after the break to score a 10-5 win. The Hillers held a 3-0 lead before the Warriors finally broke through late in the first, cutting the deficit to 3-2 at half. Foxboro went on to outscore the hosts 8-2 in the second half to run away with the win. Tony Sulham had a team-high three goals, Conor Noone added six points — two goals and four assists — and Jon Sacchetti chipped in with a pair of goals to pace the offense. Finn Stapleton, Aidan Waller, and Ryan Cotter each scored once while Adam Addeche made 12 saves in net in the win.

Franklin, 20 @ North Attleboro, 6 – Final – Franklin built a four-goal lead after the first, extended it to seven by halftime, and ran away with it for good in the second half on the road at North Attleboro. Jayden Consigli (one assist) had a team-high four goals while Luke Davis (three assists) and Tyler Sacchetti (one assist) each added three goals in the win. Eddie O’Brien (one assist) and Ryan Grasso chipped in with two goals apiece.

Mansfield, 4 @ King Philip, 9 – Final – King Philip’s James Boldy and Mansfield’s Ryan DeGirolamo both delivered in a battle of two of the top goalies in the league, but it wa the Warriors that outlasted the visiting Hornets. Boldy turned away 14 saves in the win while DeGirolamo had another stellar outing, making 23 saves. Noah Minkwitz netted four goals and had two assists to lead the offensive charge for KP. Donovan DeVellis added two goals, Hayden Schmitz (two assist), Cullen McCarthy, and Nick Longobardi each scored once, and Mason Thomas (two assists), Justin Kosh, and Tommy Kilroy each had an assist. Nico Smith (two goals, one assist) and Tommy Smith (one goal, two assists) each had three points for the Hornets while Drew Sacco scored once and had one helper.

Sharon, 13 @ Oliver Ames, 7 – Final – Sharon and Oliver Ames were locked in a tight game throughout the first half but the Eagles were able to pull away for the win on the road. For OA, Ben Reardon scored a hat trick and had one assist while Ryan Jaco and Shaun Teehan each scored twice and added an assist.

Girls Lacrosse
Taunton, 3 @ Canton, 16 – Final – The Bulldogs had eight different players find the back of the net in a big win at home against visiting Taunton. Ella Yeaton paced the balanced attack with four goals while Nora Giannacopoulos added three for the Bulldogs. Kayleigh Koen (two goals) and Lauren Shatkin (two goals) each scored their first varsity goal in the win while freshman Olivia McCabe made her debut in net, turning away six shots.

Foxboro, 15 vs. Hopkinton, 8 – Final – Foxboro got contributions from all over in a big win against Hopkinton. Mya Waryas recorded a team-high seven points, scoring twice and spreading the ball around for five assists. Paige Curran chipped in with four goals and two assists, Val Beigel found the back of the net four times, Mary Collins scored a hat trick, and both Addie Riley (one assist) and Cate Noone (two assists) scored once. Sofia Lucente earned the win in the cage, making a pair of saves.

Franklin, 6 vs. Lincoln-Sudbury, 9 – Final – The Panthers got off to a great start but Lincoln-Sudbury rallied to take the win. Franklin scored the first four goals of the game but the visiting Warriors scored four of the next five goals to cut the deficit to just one, 5-4, at halftime. Katie Peterson had two goals and eight draw controls, Jamie Tanner scored twice with two helpers, and Kaitlyn Carney scored once with two assists.

Boys Tennis
Taunton, 1 @ Attleboro, 4 – Final – Taking a pair of wins from both singles and doubles action, Attleboro defended home court with a 4-1 decision over visiting Taunton. Kyle Neuendorf and Tyler Rocchio both battled to tough three-set victories with Neuendorf grabbing a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win at first singles and Rocchio prevailing 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 at second singles. The team of Luke Hinton and Brady Rosen earned a straight set 6-3, 6-3 first doubles win, and Attleboro’s second doubles team of Noem Cook and Clay Tyler only dropped two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win. Taunton’s Heitor Sens emerged from third singles with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 win.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ Canton, 4 – Final – Canton swept singles action and added one more win in doubles play to defend home court against Oliver Ames. Max Kupferman, Bharat Ramanathan, and Justin Ngan each won in singles action, and the team of seniors Davis Lamb and Jorge Nebril secured a 6-3, 6-1 verdict at first doubles. OA’s Nick Wagner and Brendan Teehan dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at second doubles.

Stoughton, 1 @ Foxboro, 4 – Final – All four of Foxboro’s wins came in straight sets, two from singles action and a sweep of the doubles matches, to beat Stoughton. Raj Jetty rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles while Luca Meyer took home a 6-2, 6-2 decision at second singles for the Warriors. The team of Nathan Cote and Ryan Fossella won a tight battle at first doubles, 7-6 (4), 6-4, and the team of Greg Simone and Evan Paluzzi dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at second doubles.

North Attleboro, 2 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Franklin picked up three close wins to earn a tight win over visiting North Attleboro. All three of the Panthers’ wins involved a tiebreaker but were completed in straight sets. Ahan Shetty prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (3) at second singles and Andrew Amante added a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win at third singles for Franklin. The Panthers’ first doubles team of Eric Tomaino and Aaron Ramaswamy secured a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win at first doubles to help clinch the win. North Attleboro senior Brody Carter took a 6-4, 6-2 win at first singles while the junior pairing of Arnav Raghuvanshi and Aaryan Anjna landed a 6-3, 6-3 win at second doubles.

Milford, 2 @ King Philip, 3 – Final – King Philip’s second doubles team of Logan Riley and Ashrith Epuri rallied from a one-set deficit, earned a close win in the second set, and completed the comeback in the third set to get the win and clinch the match for the Warriors. Riley and Epuri won by the score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 while Luke Bailor earned a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 win at first singles and Arjun Kollu secured a 7-6, 6-1 win at second singles. Milford’s Corey Rattray grabbed a 6-2, 7-6 win at third singles, and the team of Sean Preveligo and Todd Ostertag picked up a 6-4, 7-6 win at first doubles.

Mansfield, 1 @ Sharon, 4 – Final – Sharon swept both doubles matches and took two more victories from singles actions in a 4-1 win over visiting Mansfield. Jacob Slavsky took the win in a hard-fought first singles win (6-3, 6-4) while Matthew Lally did the same at second singles, emerging with a 6-4, 6-1 win. The team of senior Rithvik Neti and sophomore Sava Kassev earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at first doubles, and Sharon’s second doubles pairing of senior Mihir Basil and sophomore Joel Zwicker won 6-2, 6-4. Mansfield’s Iniyan Karruppusami prevailed in a three-set battle, taking a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (4) win at third singles.

Attleboro, 3 @ Taunton, 2 – Final – A sweep of both doubles matches and a win at first singles helped Attleboro secure a key road win at Taunton. Maddie Fuscaldo took a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles for the lone Attleboro win in single action. the Tram of Zoe Stanley and Kyra Johnson added a 6-1, 6-4 win at first doubles, and Julia Leonardo and Katie Lortos added a 6-1, 6-3 verdict at second doubles for the Bombardiers. Taunton’s Ava Alves didn’t drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 second singles win and Morgan Smith did the same for a victory at third singles for the Tigers.

Canton, 1 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final – Oliver Ames was victorious in a pair of tight doubles matches and the Tigers added two more wins in singles action to knock off Canton. The team of Ava Barth and Emily Beaulieu battled to a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at first doubles for the Tigers, and OA’s second doubles pairing of Marina Mierzwinski and Ella Mierzwinski earned a 6-3, 7-5. Hannah Farber didn’t drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 first singles victory, while Olivia Querzoli earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles. Canton’s Charlotte Powers took a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 decision at third singles.

Foxboro, 3 @ Stoughton, 2 – Final – Foxboro’s second doubles team of Katelynn Dineen and Shannon McElhinney emerged victorious after a three-set battle to help the Warriors clinch the win over Stoughton. Dineen and McElhinney rallied from a one-set deficit to earn a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win for the Warriors. Hailey Kornbluth added a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles and the team of Audrey Paolino and Analise Tia dropped three games in a 6-1, 6-2 first doubles win. Stoughton’s Nadia Prokopiuk battled to a 6-3, 6-3 second singles win while sophomore Dhruvi Patel won a marathon of a match, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) at third singles.

Franklin, 1 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – North Attleboro picked up one of its best wins of the season, taking down visiting Franklin 4-1 behind a singles sweep and one doubles win. Junior Lauren Hunt earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles, sophomore Megan Atwood picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at second singles, and senior Grace Noreck rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 verdict at third singles. North’s fourth win came from the sophomore pairing of Grace Manning and Jayla Stone, who took a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win at second doubles. Franklin’s Brooke Daniels and Sydney Tolonen, both sophomores, grabbed a 6-0, 7-6 (4) win at first doubles.

King Philip, 5 @ Milford, 0 – Final – KP senior Ahunna James had a dominant showing, highlighting the Warriors’ clean sweep with all five matches won in straight sets. James didn’t drop a game in an impressive performance (6-0, 6-0) at first singles, Shea Mellman won by the same score at second singles, and Caroline Freese completed the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at third singles. The team of Caroline Burns and Priya Riar used a strong net game to secure a 6-1, 6-1 win at first doubles, and the team of Lauren Casper and Jaelyn Dang earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at second doubles for KP.

Sharon, 5 @ Mansfield, 0 – Final – Sharon showed no rust from 10 days off, sweeping the Hornets with all five matches being won in straight sets. Judy Song (6-1, 6-0), Navya Shukla (6-0, 6-0), and Ale Aguilar (6-1, 6-2) each won their singles matches. At doubles, the teams of Olivia Landstein and Sophia Oh (6-2, 6-0) and Alina Hou and Jada Villaroel (6-4, 6-4) earned wins for the Eagles.

Canton Can’t Overcome Tough Start in Finals Defeat

BOSTON, Mass. – Even when you’ve played at the TD Garden before, the experience of skating on the biggest stage with the chance to win a state championship can be daunting. In the first period of Sunday morning’s Div. 2 final, Canton (19-3-4) struggled to find its footing against No. 2 seed Duxbury.

The Dragons were flying from the start, held Canton to just one shot on goal in the first, and jumped out to a two-goal lead. Despite twice battling back within one, the Bulldogs were never able to overcome that tough start to the game. Duxbury skated to a 5-2 victory and its first state title since 2014.

It was the fifth state final appearance for the Bulldogs in the past seven seasons, but Canton is still looking for that first win at the TD Garden.

“The nerves and the stage and they did to us what we wanted to do to them, just get a consistent flow, heavy forecheck, over the red line, and get it deep and we were just struggling to do that,” said Canton coach Nikki Petrich about her team’s difficulties in the opening period.

She added, “They’re nervous too, but they’re applying more pressure. So, once we started to relax a little bit, as you saw in the second period, and really get into our game plan we had several scoring opportunities.”

Duxbury wasted no time creating chances. Samantha Norton circled the net and teed up Addyson Harrington for a quick shot that hit the outside of the post. Izzy Cusack worked hard on the forecheck to earn Canton a scoring opportunity, but Devan Spinale’s shot from the point went wide on the blocker side.

Zoey Madigan then fired a pass to Megan Carney for a chance from close range and Maya Battista had to be in the right spot to block. Seconds later, the Dragons went on the first power play. It took only eight seconds for them to convert. Madeleine Greenwood’s slap shot from the edge of the right wing circle snuck through a crowd and past Carolyn Durand’s pad.

Play continued to be almost exclusively in the Canton zone. Carney forced a blocker save from Durand, who then had to react quickly to smother the rebound attempt from Harrington.

With 1:43 left in the first, Duxbury doubled the lead on a stellar solo goal. McKenna Colella picked up the puck behind her own net, skated the length of the ice weaving through Canton players, and then slipped a backhand shot under the pads of Durand to make it 2-0.

Canton came out with more energy to start the second, although Colella nearly added a third after forcing a turnover, but she flicked her shot wide. Ellie Bohane worked hard to force a turnover on the other end and had a good look blocked by Lucia Rose.

Midway through the period, Canton got back into the game. Tori Carr collected the puck at the right point and fired a shot through bodies in front and past Duxbury goalie Anna McGinty.

“That’s kind of been the beauty of our postseason run,” Petrich said about Carr providing the score. “We’ve had several different scorers every single game and that’s what we really needed. It was great that she scored that goal to really get us going.”

The goal was a momentum builder for the Bulldogs, who were inches away from tying the game. On the power play, Kayleigh Koen shot one from the high slot that just missed the stick of her sister Audrey, who was stationed on the post. Battista got room in the right wing circle for a wrister, but put it just wide.

Cusack would get the best chances of the period when she connected with a pass across the crease from Audrey Koen, but could only tip it wide. Seconds later, they tried it again and this time it was on target only for McGinty to flash a pad and keep it out.

The save turned out to be huge because Duxbury would add a third against the run of play. Colella fired a shot from the point and Greenwood was able to get a telling touch to lift it over Durand with a minute left in the period.

Petrich explained, “When another team is doing what we want to do and you can’t get your shots through, they’re incredible with blocking shots, and it was just another kind of punch in the face. Every time we were able to punch, they were able to punch us back twice as hard.”

Although the swallowed up any of the momentum that the Bulldogs had built in the second period, Canton continued to push in the third to try and get back into the contest. Durand (11 saves) was called into action again early in the period, stopping a backhand try from Harrington.

Kayleigh Koen had a shot from the point stopped by McGinty (10 saves) and the rebound popped out to fellow freshman defenseman Georgia Campbell. She fired the puck back on net but classmate Abby Stock’s tip was wide.

The chance to make it a game was presented with six minutes to go when the Bulldogs went on the power play. Canton took the chance. Cusack got it started with a good forecheck on the side of the net, winning possession and dropping a pass back to Battista, who was pinching in from the right point. The senior threaded the needle with an angled pass to the back post and Audrey Koen was in right spot to tap in.

It was game on again with 5:19 to play, but it was Duxbury that responded better. Durand had to stay strong to deny a point-blank tip from Greenwood, but the Dragons just kept coming. Carney set up Harrington in the slot for a one-timer that made it 4-2 with 2:30 to go. Just a minute later, Greenwood nearly completed her hat trick with a power move that Durand stopped only for Parker Metzler to follow up and put the game away.

“Just a phenomenal feeling,” Petrich said, reflecting on taking Canton to the Garden in her first season in charge. “We got here extremely early and to see the ice, to see no one in the stands and to see their faces, to be able to take those pictures on the bench, and to kind of visualize and understand the moment that they’re in was really, really special.

“I just really enjoyed seeing them. It’s why hockey is so awesome because we get to play here.”

Canton Exacts Revenge on Algonquin to Return to Final Four

CANTON, Mass. – Although Canton won when the teams faced each other near the end of the regular season, the Bulldogs still remembered how it felt when Algonquin found the back of the net in overtime of the 2022 Div. 2 title game and there was still a desire to fully avenge that loss.

On Thursday night at the Canton Ice House, the Bulldogs got the opportunity for revenge and they took it.

Behind a stellar performance from senior goalie Carolyn Durand (21 saves) and a pair of goals from freshmen, Canton knocked Algonquin out of the tournament with a 3-0 victory and, in the process, booked a return to the D2 Final Four.

“This game was definitely our revenge game,” said senior Audrey Koen. “This time with the stakes and taking a little piece away from them that they took from us last year, I think everyone had it in their mind that this was our time and we’re the better team. We’ve all come so far and we work so hard together and we’re going to do it for each other.”

Canton got off to a strong start, putting the pressure on the Algonquin defense by getting the puck deep, letting the forecheck get to work, and using the defense to pinch in at the blue line to maintain possession. It led to a 9-4 edge in shots in the first.

The first good chance came after six minutes, when freshman Kayleigh Koen’s shot from the point was tipped in front by Anna Lehan. Algonquin goalie Kaitlin Mathews was able to get a pad on the puck and quickly covered up. It took more than 10 minutes for the Titans to create a quality chance, with Olivia Bower’s shot from the point forcing a late kick save from Durand.

Pressure started to mount in the closing minutes of the first, as Canton had a flurry of chances. Freshman Izzy Cusack won the puck along the right wing boards and fired a wrister that Mathews managed to get a blocker to, with Audrey Koen following up but not getting full purchase on the rebound.

Ellie Bohane forced another blocker save from a tough angle and then, with Canton on the power play, she found herself in the slot with shooting space, but narrowly missed the top corner. With just seconds left in the first, Algonquin nearly stole the lead, as Emily Johns took advantage of a turnover for a shorthanded breakaway, but Durand stood tall to make the stop as the horn sounded.

“Her biggest strength is she’s just cool and ready and willing and wants to win so badly for her teammates that she will do anything to stop that puck,” Canton coach Nikki Petrich said of Durand.

Canton came out strong to start the second. Three minutes in, the Bulldogs finally got the breakthrough. Koen, who had a good shot saved a minute before, created the chance when she circled behind the net and flicked a pass out in front. Cusack was in the slot and managed to not only settle the puck but then chip it up over the goalie to make it 1-0.

“These freshmen are incredible,” said Koen. “They came into this team and they just clicked right away. I think all of these freshmen have stepped right into place. They don’t play like freshman, they play like they’ve been here for three or four years.”

The hosts had some chances to try and double the lead. Bohane sacrificed herself to block a shot in the defensive zone and that gave Lehan the chance to get out into open ice. As the back check reached her, Lehan spun onto her backhand and forced a save out of Mathews.

With six minutes left in the second, Devan Spinale’s shot from the point skidded wide but Bohane chased it down and snapped off a quick shot that went off the goalie’s skates and stayed out.

Algonquin sensed that it needed to step up its work in the offensive zone and had several chances in the final five minutes of the period. The best opportunity fell to Harper Ruderman, but Durand was in perfect position to make the point-blank stop. Maya Battista nearly doubled the Canton lead shortly after when she fired one from the point but Mathews stuck out the blocker and got a piece of it.

There was a different intensity about Algonquin in the third. The defending champs were on the front foot for the first time in the game, with Johns coming closest on a redirection that slid just wide of the bottom corner.

While the visitors were pressing forward in search of an equalizer, Canton struck again. The Bulldogs had several chances in close succession and finally freshman Christina Curran pounced on a loose puck and slammed the rebound just inside the post to give Canton that crucial two-goal cushion.

“Depth is huge and we want to give every girl an opportunity to play,” Petrich said about Curran, the third-line center getting on the board. “To get the experience, you have to have the opportunity. When other girls can step up and provide scoring opportunities, as well as not get scored on, it’s great.”

Petrich also noted that two freshmen scored for the Bulldogs. She added, “The seniors have done an exceptional job off the ice of welcoming the freshmen and making them feel a part of the team, a part of a family. They’re able to really build that chemistry off the ice and translate that on the ice.”

Most of the remainder of the game was played in the Canton zone. Algonquin had three power play opportunities in the third and was playing with the desperation of a team that saw its season on the brink. But, Durand stood in the Titans’ way and the Hockomock League MVP was equal to the task, making 11 saves in the third, including one off the mask from Johns and then again sticking out the blocker to stop a fierce wrister.

“She definitely plays a huge role in why we’re so good,” Koen said about Durand. “We know that she’s going to make the big saves and that we’re going to make the big plays in the offensive zone. I love how we all come together.”

With just 22.5 on the clock, Koen got free at the blue line, skated the length of the ice, and deposited an empty net goal that finished off the Titans and sent the Bulldogs to the next round.

“It was incredible,” Koen said about scoring the final goal. “I was just trying not to miss. I just wanted to make sure that it went in and just being able to feel that feeling and know that we’re putting it away was awesome.”

Canton (18-2-4) will face top seed Archbishop Williams, who the Bulldogs also beat in the regular season, on Saturday evening at Gallo Ice Arena.

Canton Starts Playoff Run By Beating Westwood

CANTON, Mass. – When the current crop of Canton seniors were freshmen, they were part of a tournament run that ended with a berth in the final and being named the Div. 2 co-champions. After yet another run to the TD Garden last winter, the program’s third title game in five seasons, the senior class brings plenty of playoff nous to the ice each game.

Of course, adding a new group of talented freshmen ready to step into the spotlight that comes with trying to continue the recent playoff success certainly helps.

Canton’s blend of senior savvy and youthful energy was on full display on Wednesday night at the Metropolis Rink. With two goals from seniors and two more from freshmen, the Bulldogs beat Westwood 4-1 to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

“They have the experience from playoffs and from the regular season this year,” said Canton coach Nikki Petrich. “Several games we’ve been up [and the other team came back]. It’s a long hockey game. We know we’re going to score, they’re going to score, but it’s who’s going to finish the battle to the end.”

The game could have been a much bigger win, but Westwood goalie Marissa Poma finished with 37 saves, many of them spectacular.

Canton came out flying in the first period, nearly finding the back of the net inside the opening two minutes when freshman Kayleigh Koen slipped a pass across the crease to Izzy Crugnale, only for Poma to somehow stretch and get a pad on the shot. Tori Carr had a shot from the point saved and Poma was able to cover up when Lilah Spinelli crashed the net to get on the rebound.

The breakthrough came on the power play. Senior Maya Battista collected the puck on the right point, picked her spot, and flung a shot towards the far post. Canton had plenty of bodies in front and the puck flew past Poma and inside the post.

“February was tough for us,” said Petrich, referencing Canton’s strong schedule, “but we didn’t start the games as hard, fast, and strong as I wanted us to, so that was the emphasis here starting playoffs was to really get after it, but their goalie just played phenomenal. All the credit to her. I tried to give her a hug because she played phenomenal.”

Westwood finally got going after falling behind, although Canton would finish the first with a 15-4 edge in shots on goal. Four minutes after allowing the opener, the visitors leveled the score. Freshman Livvy Hicks sent a knuckling puck through a crowd and over the shoulder of goalie Carolyn Durand to make it 1-1.

Audrey Koen nearly restored the lead with a nice wraparound attempt on her backhand, but Poma made the save. With less than 30 seconds left in the first, freshman Izzy Cusack stole the puck in the offensive zone and got the puck into the slot to Koen, who partially fanned on the shot but managed to put it on frame only for Ava Krouson to block the shot on the line.

Durand was called into action early in the second, making a nice glove save on a Kate Sullivan effort. Cusack nearly put the Bulldogs in front, but her chipped shot from close range clipped the bar on its way across the net.

With 9:33 to go in the second, Kayleigh Koen scored what turned out to be the game-winner. She pinched in from the blue line, blocking a chip up the boards and keeping possession. Koen pushed up the left wing boards and cut towards goal, forcing a pad stop from Poma. The puck squirted out in front and Koen was able, on the second attempt, to redirect it into the open net.

“No longer a freshman and no stranger to big moments,” Petrich said about Koen. “Big players step up in big moments and that’s what she does for us every time. Her ability to skate with the puck as a defenseman, she’s so offensive-minded but so strong and solid on the blue line you almost don’t expect it.”

Poma continued to excel, keeping Canton from extending the lead on the power play. Battista had another good look from the point and Ellie Bohane pounced on the rebound, but the goalie stuffed the point-blank chance. Battista then tried to follow up with a quick wrister, but Poma recovered in time to glove it.

Canton started the third period on the kill, but it didn’t stop the Bulldogs from continuing to pepper the Westwood goal. Cusack had a good chance almost directly from the face-off, and Poma also had to be alert to stop the rebound as well. Bohane would come close after good work by Audrey Koen down the wing and a nifty behind-the-back-pass into the slot, but the shot went either off Poma’s glove or the post and stayed out.

Another dominant start to a period finally paid off with a goal. Freshman Georgia-Ann Penders, who was injured to start the season, made a perfect pass across the crease to classmate Abby Stock. Stock was able to pick the five-hole and give the Bulldogs a two-goal cushion.

With 4:34 to go, Canton wrapped up the win. This time, it was the seniors who got on the score sheet. Bohane raced out on a two-on-one, drew the defender, and saucered a pass to Koen on her right. Koen ripped a shot into the top corner to book Canton’s place in the next round.

“The message from me is always to play the right way, which is passing the puck,” Petrich explained. “Several times we came out of the corner right here and we missed the net, and it’s a breakout. I said, listen, play hockey the right way, smarter hockey, move the puck. I said, stop playing hero hockey and start playing smarter hockey.”

Canton (16-2-4) will face the winner of No. 13 Milton and No. 20 Framingham on Saturday night at the Canton Ice House. The time is to be determined.

Foxboro, 58 vs. Melrose, 48 – Final – Foxboro senior Alex Penders poured in 30 points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career, leading the Warriors to a win over Melrose in an MIAA endowment game. Penders got off to a great start with 15 points in the opening quarter, helping Foxboro to a 19-17 lead. The Warriors outscored Melrose by two in three of the four quarters, and by four in the third quarter. Penders drained a three with 1:33 left in the third quarter to hit the 1,000-point milestone. He also hauled in 16 rebounds while senior Sam Golub chipped in with 14 points.

Franklin, 51 vs. Xaverian, 37 – Final – Franklin hit five of its nine three-pointers in the second quarter to create a big lead that it held the rest of the way against Xaverian. The Panthers hit a trio of threes against Xaverian’s zone defense in the first quarter for a 15-8 lead and then really got going in the final minutes of the first half. Andrew O’Neill (15 points) hit three of his five three-pointers in the final four minutes of the second quarter and Justin Allen (12 points, six rebounds) hit two of his four triples in that same stretch as Franklin used a 16-2 run to build a 33-17 lead at halftime. The Panthers struggled offensively during the third but their defense was strong all game long and prevented the Hawks from making a run to get back into it. Ben Harvey added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers.

Stoughton/Brockton, 8 @ Bellingham, 3 – Final – The Black Knights used a balanced scoring attack to secure a big win on the road in their final game of the regular season. Jake McSweeney scored a pair of goals from Stoughton/Brockton while Sean Farley, Charlie Caputo, Ryan Summers, Owen Dupont, Anthony DeSousa, and Garrett Sager each had one goal in the win.

Girls Hockey
Canton, 5 vs. Natick, 1 – Final – Freshman Izzy Cusack scored three times to lead Canton to a win in the regular season finale. The Bulldogs extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games, as they look to secure a top four spot in Div. 2. Cusack got the scoring started with the lone goal of the first period. Ellie Bohane doubled the Canton lead, following up a shot from Cusack in the second period. Freshman Kayleigh Koen made it 3-0 with a shot from the point and then Cusack wrapped up the win by adding two more against another D2 playoff contender.

King Philip, 5 vs. Bishop Stang, 2 – Final – After beating the host team Milton in a shootout, KP’s offense exploded for five goals against Stang to secure the title at the Milton February Break Tournament. Kelly Holmes was named the player of the tournament after scoring four goals in the final. Freshman Katie McGann also found the back of the net for the Warriors. Nicole McDonald, who scored both goals against Milton, teed up three goals on Thursday. Mara Boldy, Katarina Precobb, and Lydia Maxwell also had assists. Mallory Johnston made 36 saves to send KP into the state tournament on a high note.

Canton Beats KP to Secure Fourth Straight Hock Title

FOXBORO, Mass. – Since the Hockomock League introduced girls hockey six years ago, the games have always been competitive but Canton has stood above the others as the team to beat each winter. King Philip went into Wednesday night’s showdown at the Foxboro Sports Center looking to knock Canton off its perch and bring home its first league title in the process.

Canton’s title-winning experience proved to be too much to overcome. Behind an Audrey Koen hat trick, the Bulldogs pulled out a 5-2 victory, winning their fourth straight Hock championship and fifth in the past six years.

“Experience is everything and unfortunately the only way to get it is to get it and to go through it, so I couldn’t have asked for a better balance,” first-year Canton coach Nikki Petrich said about her roster’s blend of youth and experience.

She continued, “Having a more tenured player maybe working with some of the younger girls and walking them through, you’re going to feel this way, you’re going to feel that way, but remember what we do in practice, remember to listen for our voices. It’s been great to have their leadership and experience because big players step up in big games.”

The Bulldogs outshot KP 11-5 in the opening period (and 36-15 for the game), but each Warriors shot was a quality scoring chance.

Nicole McDonald had the first look when she reacted to a loose puck after a face-off and was stopped from close range by Canton goalie Carolyn Durand. McDonald also forced a turnover in the attacking zone and played a pass across the crease to Katarina Precobb, but Durand somehow got across to the far post to make the point-blank pad stop and keep the game scoreless.

“I was like okay it’s 1-0,” Petrich said, thinking about that moment. “Carolyn makes the save and we go down, and to me it’s always transition hockey, but a huge save like that really lifted our team and the momentum to fight some more. Every single game she makes a save like that and we’re able to get energy from it.”

Kelly Holmes would have another good chance for KP after keeping the puck in at the blue line, but Durand got her blocker to it. On the other end, Tori Carr had one of Canton’s best early chances with a steal in the neutral zone and hard shot that KP goalie Mallory Johnston knocked aside. Abby Stock also had a chance from the high slot that forced a glove save.

Things felt even in the early going, but Canton got the game’s first power play and made sure to take advantage of the opportunity. Maya Battista collected the puck just outside the right wing circle and played a diagonal pass across the zone to the back post. Koen was pinching in from the boards and collected the puck, despite a slight deflection, before roofing a shot over Johnston’s glove side from a tight angle.

With the lead, Canton came out of the intermission full of energy. Koen almost doubled the lead after two minutes when she won the puck on the left wing boards, cut hard towards the net, and forced Johnston into a good save.

About 30 seconds later and the Bulldogs did make it 2-0. Freshman Izzy Cusack had her shot from the slot saved. The rebound kicked out in front of Johnston, who attempted to dive out and cover the loose puck, but Cusack stayed with it and was able to slide it past the goalie. KP argued that the whistle had gone to blow the play dead, but the goal stood.

KP continued to create chances. Mara Boldy slipped a pass between a pair of defenders and Holmes was able to slam the puck towards goal, but Durand got the pads down to make sure of the save.

With 9:10 left in the period, KP was back in the game. Holmes intercepted an outlet pass at the blue line and skated in alone on Durand before flicking a shot into the top corner. About a minute later, Canton was back in control. Koen flew down the right wing and rifled a shot just under the bar to make it 3-1 and steal back all the momentum from the hosts.

“I always tell them hockey ebbs and flows like life,” Petrich explained. “I don’t like to say we need another goal, it’s always one shot. To me, when you say a goal, it’s so much pressure. Never get too low, never get too high, so when you come out next shift clear your mind, clear your head, and go after it. For her to score that fast, I couldn’t have written it better.”

The goal sparked the Bulldogs back into life and they dominated the rest of the period, creating a 14-5 edge in shots on goal. Ellie Bohane had a good two tries to extend the lead when she drove towards goal and forced Johnston into a stop and then fired the rebound on net only for the KP goalie to flash a pad out and make the save.

Canton opened up a three-goal cushion with 3:46 left in the second. Anna Lehan came from the right wing and attempted a wrap around that was saved, but the loose puck came right out into the middle where Stock was charging towards goal and the freshman buried the chance.

KP’s hopes of a comeback in the third period were blunted by starting on the penalty kill and Canton wasted no time putting the game away. Koen completed her hat trick just 13 seconds in, whipping a wrister into the bottom left corner and making it 5-1.

The next several minutes were played almost exclusively in the KP zone. The Warriors finally got some chances down the other end of the ice with less than five minutes to play. While falling down, Holmes was able to slide a pass across the crease to McDonald, but Durand made the save. About 30 seconds later, Holmes again drove towards goal and got the puck in front and this time McDonald was able to squeeze it home.

Canton finished with a flourish, getting scoring chances from Cusack and Kayleigh Koen, but the work had already been done. The Bulldogs swarmed Durand at the final horn, having retained their Hock title once again.

“That was more pressure on me, I couldn’t let them down,” Petrich joked when asked about how it felt to bring home a fourth title in a row. “It feels amazing to accomplish that with them in our first year. As I’ve said all year, we’re continually learning from each other. The girls that have been here on the team who know the players and the teams and (assistant coach) Kevin [Cleary] and I and our knowledge of hockey and the teams we’ve played. It’s coming together.”

Canton (11-2-2) will be off until Monday when it faces Archbishop Williams, currently the top-ranked team in Div. 2, and then follows that with a trip to Duxbury, the No. 2-ranked team in the division. King Philip (7-9) will host Arlington Catholic on Monday night.

Canton has won four of the five Hockomock titles since league play began, including three in a row, and last winter the Bulldogs went to their fourth state title game in the past six seasons. It was an incredible stretch of success under Dennis Aldrich, who stepped down in the off-season, and the Bulldogs don’t look ready to slow down anytime soon. First-year coach Nikki Petrich, a former Northeastern University standout, comes to Canton after being an associate head coach for Austin Prep, helping them win a pair of Div. 1 state titles, and she has an experienced roster aiming for another trip to the Garden in March.

The Bulldogs can count on plenty of senior leadership this winter, starting up front with forwards Audrey Koen and Ellie Bohane. Koen is the team’s top returning scorer with 12 goals and eight assists last year and will be a focal point in the attack. Juniors Maggie Dailey, Lilah Spinelli, and Anna Lehan also contributed important minutes and important goals during last year’s playoff run and could be ready to step into bigger roles this season. As always, Canton can reload with talented underclassmen and freshmen Christina Curran, Abby Stock, and Izzy Cusack could also feature in a deep forward group.

Defense has long been a strength for Canton and it starts in goal with senior Carolyn Durand. The four-year starter has been one of the best shot stoppers in the state since her freshman year and gives the team a strong foundation in its own zone. Senior Maya Battista is another four-year starter and has emerged as a force on the blue line, both with her work in the defensive zone as well as her goals on the other end of the ice. Juniors Tori Carr and Devan Spinale will be back on the blue line with freshmen Kayleigh Koen and Georgia Campbell part of a talented rookie class that could contribute right away.

“We are looking to build off of the success of last year and continue to make sure that every single girl in our program has an incredible experience representing their town, high school, and family,” Petrich said. With a senior captain in net, a senior captain on the blue line, and two senior captains leading the way for your forwards, our team is going to compete every single game. A strong freshman class rounds out what is truly a team with extensive experience playing in meaningful games come the end of February.”

Franklin

Franklin is the only team other than Canton to have won a Hockomock League title and the Panthers come into the season with a more experienced, and deeper, roster to try and get back on top. Former assistant Mike Lubin has taken over as head coach after the retirement of longtime coach Margie Burke and he has a balanced lineup to work with this winter.

The Panthers will be hoping to be more solid on the defensive end of the ice this season, building on the structure they have created in all three zones. Senior Shaw Downing is a four-year varsity player and a dynamic skater along the blue line, not only being sure on the puck in her own zone but also capable of carrying the play into the attack. Junior Lindsay Dennett continues to improve each season and sophomore goalie Izzy Brown is coming off an impressive rookie campaign between the pipes.

Sophomore Julia Flynn was the team’s leading scorer last year and she is back to power the Franklin offense. Senior Lindsay Atkinson is also back, after missing all of last winter with an injury. Atkinson had a big sophomore season and will be a huge addition to the top line. Senior forwards Dana Stott and Molly Hurley bring two-way strength to the forward line.

“We’re a close group with great leadership and a good mix of young talent,” Lubin said. “We’re all excited to get the season started and build on our strong team chemistry from last year.”

The biggest co-op team in the Hockomock League is getting bigger. The Mansfield/Oliver Ames Warriors, which also featured skaters from Foxboro, now includes players from Attleboro, Milford, North Attleboro, and Taunton and will be going by the name of Hockomock Stars.

Jamie Mullen returns for her second year at the helm of the program and now has some more players to work into her lineup. The Stars lost some key players to graduation, including longtime goalie Jess Widdop and speedy forward Sam Ledin, and also have to replace the production of last year’s leading scorer Kylie O’Keefe (20 points). Leading the offense will be a pair of Mansfield juniors: Cammy Shenteler, fresh off a 7-goal, 9-assist season, and Maeve Anastasia, who totaled 11 points with six goals last year.

North Attleboro has four players in the mix with junior Ava O’Dwyer, sophomore Grace Cabeceiras, and freshmen Brittany Nordbeck and Alana Rice. Attleboro (Emily Davignon, Avery Drainville, McKenzie Sullivan) has three players, Taunton (Hannah Albert, Kendell Scheralis) has two, and Milford has one (Lindsay Casman).

Foxboro’s Mya Waras (five points) and Mansfield’s Ava Adams (five points) will also be key pieces in the attack. Foxboro junior Macy Quinn is back to anchor the blue line for the Stars while Davignon will be between the pipes.

King Philip is coming off a really strong year. The Warriors won 18 games last winter but saw the season come to an end in the opening round of the state tournament. KP scored 93 goals in 23 games in 2021-22 but graduated the bulk of one of the state’s top scoring lines, so will need new players to step into bigger roles in search of the program’s first Hock title.

While the top scoring line may look a little different this winter, KP does return its top goal scorer. Junior Kelly Holmes is back to lead the offense and is one of the most dynamic players in the league. Senior Katarina Precobb and junior Nicole McDonald will add more punch to the top line this season. The Warriors will have decent depth in the attacking zone, with senior Sydney Cloutier, junior Rylie Ryan, and freshmen Cam O’Shea and Kate McGann each ready to provide an attacking punch. Eighth graders Tayla McDuff, Rylan McKillop, Ella Morgan, Erin Steck, and Molly Murphy should all get their chance to contribute.

In the defensive zone, KP will have plenty of experience to try and keep other teams out. Seniors Brielle Hearon, Mara Boldy, and Emma Sullivan will all be back on the blue line, providing leadership and physicality to slow down the opposition. Freshmen Lydia Maxwell and Grace Lehan-Allen both saw time as eighth graders and will build on that important year of varsity action. Eighth-grader Calleigh Brady should see time in defense this year. Goalie is another position of strength for the Warriors with senior Mallory Johnston in her third year as a starter and classmate Haley Bright backing her up.

“I never call it a rebuilding year,” said KP coach Ken Assad. “With the returning players and newcomers, I believe with hard work and not taking any nights off we can be in the hunt for the Hockomock title and get into the tournament.”

Stoughton/Sharon

Stoughton/Sharon continues to be a young program that is building up its numbers. With only one senior and two juniors in the program, the Black Knights will be focusing on youth and trying to build a foundation for future seasons. After a close loss in the season opener, Stoughton/Sharon continues to find ways to stay competitive even with a smaller roster of just 14 players.

Eighth-grader Sarah Scappaticci from Sharon will be the starting goalie this season. She made 34 stops in the opener against Cambridge and is already showing that she is a skilled player between the pipes. Brockton junior Molly Corvino will be one of the leaders in the defensive zone, along with classmate Samantha Calapai. Both players are solid in their own zone but can push the team into the attack. Stoughton freshman Addison Strunk will also be one of the defenders in the top two pairings.

Stoughton’s Ava Buckley is the lone senior on the team. The Assumption-commit will be the focal point for the Black Knights on the offensive end of the ice. Sharon eighth grader Ella Cummings has a lot of skill on the puck and already opened her varsity account with a goal against Cambridge. Sharon sophomores Peri Rodman and Heather Kelly and Stoughton sophomore Leila Uchani return to the forward lines. Stoughton freshmen Julia Monaghan, Meghan McGowan, Amanda Reid, and Stoughton eighth graders Nya’Lia Lindsey and Julia Henein will give the Black Knights depth up front.

“We are a young team with only one senior and two juniors in our program,” said head coach Chad Kelley. “Ava Buckley and Molly Corvino are our captains for this season. Both Ava and Molly have been tremendous with our young group. They are great examples for others to model.”
