Stoughton, 2 @ Norwood, 2 – Final – After trailing by two goals at halftime, Stoughton rallied to tie the game with a pair of goals in the second half. Jordan Asnes headed in a cross from Josh Mitchell to cut the deficit in half and then Asnes repaid the favor, connecting with Mitchell on a long throw in to tie the game.
Girls Soccer
Mansfield, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Victoria Stowell scored both goals for Franklin, both off of long-range free kicks that found the top corner. Rebecca Bornstein went closest for Mansfield with a shot off the bar with two minutes to play.
Stoughton, 2 vs. Norwood, 1 – Final – Emerson Sprague netted the first goal for the Black Knights off an assist from Shanel Ford and Samantha Tullis converted a penalty kick for Stoughton.
Volleyball
Taunton, 3 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – The Tigers qualified for the postseason with the win. Meghan Navarro had 18 service points, including five aces, and seven digs, Emily Moor had 10 kids and five digs and Lexi Natsis played well with 10 assists, 13 service points and a pair of aces.
Oliver Ames, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton picked up the 25-10, 25-15, 26-24. Elizabeth Hamilton led the Bulldogs with eight kills, nine digs and seven aces. Casey Shea had an effective day offensively, hitting .667 with no errors.
Milford, 3 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Milford had to battle back from being down 2-1 to force a game five and took the match 25-16, 20-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-10. Kara Halpin had 13 kills, Jill Powers had eight kills, six digs and two blocks and Allie Collins had 21 assists.
Franklin, 3 @ Mansfield, 1 – Final – Franklin took a close first set and then won games three and four to get the win (27-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22). Dayna McCue had 47 serve receives for the Panthers, adding 22 digs and four aces. Sam Campbell had seven digs and five aces, Alyssa Shea had 10 kills and four digs and Beth Neal had 16 assists, five kills and four aces. For Mansfield, Cathryn Heavey had 36 assists and 16 service points while Meg Hill had 11 kills and six blocks.
North Attleboro, 0 @ King Philip, 3 – Final – King Philip got the sweep 25-11, 25-22, 25-15. The Warriors got strong serving efforts as Emma Lopez had 11 service points in the first game, Liv Balduf had seven service points in game two, Carly Adams had eight service points in game three and Gwen Uyrus had seven service points in game three. Josie Rowean paced the offense with 16 kills while Micaela Murray had nine digs and Amanda Loewen had five digs.

Milford, 2 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Jessica Palmer setup Elena DelloRusso for Milford’s first goal in the first half and then double the Scarlet Hawks’ lead with a goal of her own early in the second half.
Attleboro, 2 vs. Dartmouth, 2 – Final – Attleboro rallied from a two goal deficit at halftime to earn a point against Dartmouth. Emily Houle scored off an assist from Grace Mayer and Hannah LaMothe had an unassisted goal for the Bombardiers.

Milford 'Digs Pink' to Honor Coach and Teammate

MILFORD, Mass. – On Thursday night, the Milford volleyball team beat Millis 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-18) and improved to 5-9 on the season.
But the story of Thursday night had nothing to do with wins and losses, league standings, tournament qualification, sets, kills, digs or anything else that happened on the court.
The story of Thursday night happened before a ball was served. The real story of Milford’s first annual “Linda Zacchilli Dig Pink Night” was about what head coach Jay Guinan called, “the special moments.”
Moments such as longtime Milford boys’ volleyball coach Linda Zacchilli getting a bouquet of flowers from freshman coach Amanda Mort, who played for Zacchilli when the coach had her first bout with cancer and was forced to miss the Hawks appearance in districts. The players filmed the game and brought it to Zacchilli’s home to watch. Zacchilli, who is beating cancer for a second time, stood in the packed bleachers and gave a quick thumbs up to the Hawks on the court as a sign of her appreciation for the night.
Moments such as Guinan choking up as he tells the crowd about the conversation he had with Milford freshman volleyball player Carlie Gonzalez just a few days before when she informed him that she had been diagnosed with cancer. She told her coach not to worry because she’s going to beat it. There were few dry eyes in the gym when Gonzalez then stepped to the microphone and gave a stirring rendition of the national anthem.
Moments such as Millis coach Lisa Farese failing to hold back tears as she prepared to coach against her alma mater. Farese played for the Hawks, coached freshman boys’ volleyball under Zacchilli (and even coached Zacchilli’s son), her niece is on the Milford JV team, her brother played for Zacchilli and she has been a friend and neighbor to the Gonzalez family for years. She watched Gonzalez warming up before the varsity teams took the court and admitted to her team that the night could be pretty emotional.
More than anything, the story of Thursday night was that everyone who packed into the stands was connected by the fight against cancer. Everyone there shared the pain of lost friends and relatives and everyone shared the inspiration of Zacchilli’s strength and Gonzalez’s courage.
“I haven’t coached any of these girls,” said Zacchilli in an interview during the match, “so the fact that they brought it to the attention of Peter [Boucher] and the coach…I’m very, very honored that they wanted to share the night with me.”
Guinan also coaches boys’ volleyball at Millis and has competed against Zacchilli for years. When he heard that Milford was looking for a girls’ coach last spring, he approached her before a match and suggested that she should take over. Zacchilli explained that she was once again fighting cancer and that her chemotherapy treatments would interfere.
“I was just like wow,” Guinan recalled. “It’s not about winning or losing.”
Zacchilli is currently in remission and the hope is that she will be back on the sideline in the spring to coach the Hawks once again. She was willing to give five minutes for an interview, but once she started speaking about the Hawks the time limit flew past. No one in the gym doubts that she will be able to win this battle as she has won so many on the court.
“I fought against her for so long as a coach that I can’t imagine that anything can take her out,” said Farese with a shake of her head. Farese then marveled that in the background Zacchilli had come out of the stands to help remove the net and clean up the court.
“As soon as we got the message that hey by the way you’re playing Milford and oh by the way do you mind it being the “Dig Pink”? I was like no that’s the coolest thing ever.”
Zacchilli had not coached any of the current Milford players, although she has continued to be around the program and watched plenty of games this season. She insisted that the Hawks are better than their record shows and even in the middle of being interviewed could not tear her eyes or thoughts away from the court.
She said, “I’m glad to see that they’re turning it on tonight for sure,” and then as another Milford serve landed for an ace, she exclaimed, “Unbelievable! I’m loving this!”
The night began as a chance to honor Zacchilli, who athletic director Peter Boucher called a legend and “the matriarch of volleyball” at Milford, but the story changed this week when Gonzalez made her announcement.
“I approached the mom and they just said, we’re ready to fight,” said Boucher, who revealed before the match that he also battled cancer when he was young.
“She’s just a brave kid. We wanted to highlight the battle and the awareness and try to raise finances because I think it really matters.”
When Gonzalez got her test results and knew that it was cancer, she went to Guinan to tell him about it. As he described that moment to the crowd, he had to stop and choke back tears. He explained that Gonzalez had looked at him and told him that she was going to beat it.
“I like all these kids and treat them like my own…it’s hard,” he said after the match. “What’s hard is they kind of look at it like, no big deal.”
He added that Gonzalez left chemo early on Wednesday to be at the match against Algonquin and cheer on her teammates. Guinan said, “That’s the kind of chemistry that you want to build in a program.”
On the court, the Hawks were on fire from the first serve of the match. Kara Halpin went on a long service streak, Jill Powers, Kayla Antonellis, and Kelley Reichert dominated at the net, and seemingly every player on the Milford roster played a part in the win.
“They played a solid game against an opponent that was working really hard,” said Guinan, “but they were happy and that’s been our problem. I think we’re back on track with that.”
The win was secondary for Guinan and the Hawks. It was the opportunity to play in front of a packed house for a great cause and support two people very important to the program that really mattered.
“It’s about remembering the special moment,” he explained. “They’ll remember this as a special night. I’m glad that everybody pulled through for that.”

Taunton, 1 @ Mansfield, 4 – Final – Five minutes into the game, sophomore Sean Lanzillo put the hosts on the board off an assist from Jack Rielly. Just over 15 minutes later, senior Jared Miller doubled the lead for the Hornets off an assist from Charlie Rogers to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Five minutes into the second half, Lanzillo set up Rogers for Mansfield’s third goal and just 10 mintues later Brendan Sullivan finished off a pass from Jareme DiLoranzo to make it 4-0. Austin Botelho scored a late goal for Taunton.

North Attleboro, 5 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Sophomore Haley Guertin and senior Hana Caster linked up three times for the Rocketeers to get a big win on the road over rival Attleboro. Caster set up Guertin for North Attleboro’s first and third goals while Guertin set up Caster for the Rocketeers’ fourth goal. Leah Jette scored North Attleboro’s second goal off an assist from Felicity Monfils and Caster added her second on a breakaway. Paige Medeiors scored Attleboro’s goal.

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Oliver Ames picked up its third straight win with a 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-9 win on the road. Bridget McCarthy led Oliver Ames with 48 assists and Emma Petrillo controlled the offense with 22 kills.
Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 1 – Final – The Panthers picked up a key Kelley-Rex win with scores of 28-26, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21. Dayna McCue had 30 digs and four aces, Aubrie Kutil and Beth Neal each had 10 kills while Kutil added an ace and Neal had a pair of aces and blocks and 13 assists. Franklin Head coach Kate Horsmann said Caroline Maguire had a huge role defensively at the net with four blocks and three kills. For King Philip, Josie Rowean led the team in attacks and had six service points in game one, Gwen Uyrus added seven service points in game two, Emma Lopez had eight service points in game three, and Amanda Loewen had five digs.
Taunton, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – In a back and forth affair, Taunton snapped its three game skid with a 11-25, 29-27, 25-20, 16-25, 15-12 win. Tatum Speicher wa the catalyst for the offense with 39 assists, six digs and three kills. Molly Sullivan had 29 serve receives and 16 digs while Meghan Navarro solidified the back row with 15 digs and three aces. Mansfield sophomore Meg Hill had 13 hills, Juliana Newell added eight kills and Jess Haradon had 17 digs.
Milford, 2 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Stoughton rallied from a 2-1 deficit to pull off a 13-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13 win in thrilling fashion. Stoughton senior Bianca DeSousa had 20 assists, 15 digs, 27 service points and 10 aces and sophomore Valerie Whalen had 15 blocks and 6 kills. Stoughton head coach Ken Gay said Elizabeth Slade had outstanding defensive play for the Black Knights. For Milford, Jill Powers had a team-best 12 kills while Kara Halpin, Aleye Momodu and Kayla Antonellis each had seven kills apiece. Lauren Zouranjian and Allie Collins combined for 41 assists.

Less than 10 minutes later, junior Max Gurnon set up senior Charlie Rogers to double the Hornets’ lead. Sophomore Sean Lanzillo capped the scoring in the 54th minute off an assist from classmate Sam Hyland. Junior Evan Christo made his varsity debut in goal and made five saves for the shutout.
Oliver Ames, 1 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – OA’s Chris Romero scored the lone goal of the game in the 38th minute. Andrew Fillipkowski made nine saves for the Eagles, five in the first half alone. OA goalie Jack Carroll made three saves, including a sliding block on Sonny Somdah when he was clean through with 12 minutes remaining.

King Philip, 2 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Maddie Smith smith scored twice in the second half for the Warriors, converted on a through ball in the 59th minute and then again on a corner kick in the 80th minute. Attleboro head coach Steve Santos said Paige Medeiros and Cassie Vivar both played a great game and goalie Madison Brown had a couple of big saves to keep the game level in the first half.
Milford, 1 @ Canton, 2 – Final – Milford’s lone goal was scored by Kristen Franzini off an assist from Katie Brown. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj said midfielders Maggie Boyle and Francesca Shipperd both played well.
Foxboro, 2 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Lily Sykes and Hailey Maling each scored once for the Warriors while Jalissa Allen picked up the win in goal.
Taunton, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – The game was scoreless into the final 20 minutes. Freshman Halle Atkinson broke the deadlock off an assist by Bailey Knous. Atkinson then assisted on a goal by Jess Kroushl. Alexis Stowell wrapped up the scoring off an assist from Victoria Stowell.

Foxboro, 0 @ Milford, 3 – Final – Milford picked up its second sweep in as many days with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-11 win. Jill Powers led the Scarlet Hawks with 12 kills, Kara Halpin added eight kills and Kayla Antonellis and Kelley Reichert each had seven kills. Lauren Zouranjian had 35 assists in the win.
King Philip, 3 @ North Attleboro, 2 – Final – King Philip battled back from five points down in the fourth game (26-24) to force a fifth game, a set in which they dominated (15-1). King Philip won 17-25, 25-13, 16-25, 26-24, 15-1. In the fifth set, Gwen Uyrus had 13 straight service points, including six aces to give the Warriors the big boost. Emma Lopez had five aces and three kills, Josie Rowean finished with 20 kills and Molly Citarell had six digs for KP.
Sharon, 0 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Stoughton picked up its first sweep of the season with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-10 win over Sharon. Stoughton sophomore Val Whalen had five blocks, seven kills, five digs and six service points, Ariana Riske added 11 digs and 12 service points and Ava Siegel had 10 digs and 11 service points.

Attleboro, 2 @ King Philip, 2 – Final – Attleboro and King Philip went into halftime tied 1-1 and finished in a deadlock when the final whistle blew. Emily Houle scored in the first half for Attleboro before KP tied it up off a corner by Courtney Foley on an assist from Casie Curtin. Grace Mayer scored off a penalty stroke in the second half to put the Bombardiers back ahead but a goal by Caitlin Donahue, assisted by Liz Furfari, knotted the game again.
Canton, 2 @ Milford, 2 – Final – Canton took a 1-0 lead into halftime but Milford battled back twice, scoring its first ever goals against the Bulldogs since joining the Hockomock League. Nicole Fokas tied things up off an assist from Jessica Palmer. Canton went up again but a goal from Shannon Cormier leveled things again.
Stoughton, 0 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final
Mansfield, 4 @ North Attleboro, 2 – Final – Emily Ierardo scored a pair of goals for the Hornets while Brianna Puccia and Julia Todesco each netted a goal for Mansfield.

Franklin, 21 @ King Philip, 37 – Final – Franklin’s Ryan Spelman finished in 17:17 to take the top spot and pace the Panthers. Jimmy Robbins (17:22) and Nicholas Gnaman (17:28) finished third and fourth while Jeff Wu (17:52) finished sixth, Evan St. Germaine (17:54) finished seventh and Tyler Marchioni (18:03) finished eighth. King Philip’s Seth Sullivan (17:20) finished second and Brendan Sullivan (17:29) finished fifth.
Mansfield, 18 @ Taunton, 39 – Final – Mansfield’s Jake Affanato (16:48), Nick Rispoli (16:49) and Kevin Crawford (16:54) took the top three spots. Taunton’s top finish was senior Trevor Wysong, who finished fourth at 16:54.

Mansfield, 25 @ Taunton, 32 – Final – Mansfield junior Julie Romano won the race in 20:30 while freshman Megan MacVicar finished fourth (22:40), junior Kerrin McCarthy (23:07) finished fifth and senior Gianna Madonna-Lendvai finished six (23:13). Taunton’s Amanda Baptiste (20:46) finished second and Kailey Melito-Santos (21:25) finished third overall.

Canton, 157 @ Stoughton, 179 – Final – Canton sophomore Jack Goyetch shot an even part 36 to lead the Bulldogs to their sixth straight win. Senior Griffin Jerrier carded a 38 and senior Steve Gorham shot a 41 for Canton. Stoughton’s Josh Roos shot a team-low 43 for the Black Knights.
