Softball: Davenport Division Preview 2016

CANTON
2015 Record: 2-18
2015 Finish: Missed Playoffs
Coach: Tracy Andrews

Canton reached the postseason two seasons ago, despite only recording four wins, and this year’s crop of Bulldogs will be hoping to replicate that experience by getting the program back to the postseason. With senior lefty Sarah Reissfelder back in the circle, Canton has an experienced pitcher to rely on this spring and a power bat in the middle of the order.

Senior captains Gabby Matthews, Colleen Phelan, and Kaitlin McCarthy will also provide some pop, while sophomore Hannah Jerrier is hoping to carry over her success from the basketball court to the softball diamond. Taylor Carrington (third base) and Lillian Carrington (centerfield) will also be players to watch as the Bulldogs fight for a spot in the Div. 2 tournament under head coach Tracy Andrews.

FOXBORO
2015 Record: 9-12
2015 Finish: Reached D2 South preliminary round

Despite being below .500 again last season, Foxboro continued to improve its win total from the year before, going from six to seven to nine over the past three years, and clinching its fourth straight trip to the state tournament. Head coach Mark Maguire expects that a fifth trip will be in the cards for the Warriors again this spring but he is also setting his sights on challenging Oliver Ames and Milford at the top of the league standings.

Senior Jenna Weinstein is back in the circle for the Warriors and will be the primary starting pitcher, but Foxboro also has depth at pitching and that can make a big difference over the course of the season. Freshmen Camyrn Willis and Emma Rohan will be developed as pitchers of the future.

Weinstein will also be one of the Warriors’ top bats this season along with sophomore Hannah Davis, who is moving behind the plate to replace league all-star Bri Stern after a season at shortstop. Mary Lou Long will take over at short and Kelly Fisher will be at first base and batting cleanup, while senior Carolynn Will continues in center and has been a three-sport captain (soccer and basketball).

“We expect to compete for the Davenport division as long as our pitching comes along,” said Maguire. “We expect to make the playoffs and challenge for the league…and the girls are ready to go.”

MILFORD
2015 Record: 19-4
2015 Finish: Reached D1 South quarterfinal

Milford enters the season with the potential to win a fourth straight league title and challenging the top teams in the Div. 1 South. Senior shortstop Jill Powers and catcher Meg Jacques will provide leadership for an experienced and still young roster that features sophomore infielder Emily Piergustavo, who is already getting Div. I college interest.

In the circle, junior Ali Atherton returns for a third year and she showed last year that she can compete with the best, as evidenced by her regular season win over South champ Silver Lake. Junior Maggie Farrell will add a lot of pop to the lineup and sophomore Jess Tomasso has transferred in from Hopedale and could make an instant impact in the middle of the order. Sophomore Kate Irwin will step in to fill an outfield role and freshman Emily Hartman will be used at multiple positions this year.

Milford coach Steve DiVitto said, “They are motivated to continue to exceed others expectations and truly believe they can compete with the best of the Hock and state. They have set the bar high-and have worked tirelessly in the off-season to strive and reach those goals.”

OLIVER AMES
2015 Record: 11-11
2015 Finish: Reached D1 South first round

Oliver Ames finished behind Milford in the Davenport last year, but pulled an upset over league rival Mansfield to advance to the first round of the state tournament to face eventual South champ Silver Lake. The Tigers will be hoping to challenge the Hawks again this spring and make a run at the league title.

Spearheading the offensive attack for OA will be senior Jamie Gottwald, who led the Tigers with a .449 battling average and three homers last year. Classmate Katie Pursley will also be back after hitting .389 last year and fellow senior Missy Krim will bring experience to the outfield. Caroline Mahoney hit .352 last season and the sophomore return at third base, while junior Victoria Ziner has been off to a strong start at shortstop this preseason.

One of the biggest changes for the Tigers will be in the circle where freshman Kayla Georgeu will be the starter with sophomore Alexis Campbell will help out as a pitcher and second baseman. Head coach Lindsey Allison said, “There are still some puzzle pieces we are working on to finalize positions being filled from graduating seven last year…We are definitely looking to play .500 ball and make tournament again this year.”

SHARON
2015 Record: 3-16
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs

Sharon will look to build on last season and while the Eagles may not be challenging for the league title this season they will be hoping that the mix of experienced starters and talented underclassmen can make a push towards the postseason.

Sharon will be aided by experienced pitching, as junior Clara Cook will be the starter for the third season in a row and her battery-mate is senior Rachel Ulsen, a two-time Hockomock all-star. Senior Jenna Kranseler will be back at first base and junior Sam Marglous will be at shortstop. Head coach Deb Parker will also be counting on versatile freshmen Allison Small and Rebecca Clayman.

Parker said, “Both play a variety of positions so we will spend the next few days figuring out where they will help us the most.”

STOUGHTON
2015 Record: 7-13
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Tim Norton

After many years in charge of Stoughton softball, Janet Sullivan has stepped down and first-year head coach Tim Norton has taken over. Norton inherits a team that has lost nine seniors from last year and has as many as eight starters playing new positions this season.

Sam Tullis will be behind the plate this year and the Black Knights will also return seniors Courtney Campbell, Nicole Bodette and Shannon Flaherty. Freshman Karly Estramera will be a player to watch, according to Norton, and may be the starting centerfielder.

Norton said, “Even with the high degree of turnover this year I think the tournament isn’t out of the question. We have a very solid core of young talented players and if they play up to their potential it could propel us back into the tournament.”

Franklin Swim Wins First Hock Championship Title

MILFORD, Mass. – After back-to-back seasons of finishing in second place to its league rivals, the Franklin girls’ swimming program brought home its first Hockomock Championship title with a dominating performance on Saturday at the Milford High pool.

The Panthers finished with an overall team total of 383, more than 100 points better than defending champion King Philip’s total of 264. The top five was rounded out by Taunton (230), Sharon (186) and North Attleboro (186).

The championship meet was the culmination of a season of first for the Panthers, who also finished undefeated in the dual meet season and won the Kelley-Rex title for the first time in the seven-year history of the program.

“This is a big deal,” said Franklin swim coach Jess Pridham. “For the last two years we’ve been runners up and I can’t take credit for their talent. I’m just the chessmaster. I put together the best meet possible and their talent has brought us this far.”

It was not that long ago that the Panthers finished a season winless, but a strong crop of swimmers entered the relatively new program and helped raise it to the championship level. Those swimmers are now seniors and capped their final year with Franklin swim with the title.

“There were seven that started together and seven that are finishing together,” explained Pridham, “and to be the Hockomock champions, finally that culmination of their senior year and being able to hang onto it…We talk about our favorite swim memories and I think this will quickly become a fave for them.”

Senior Leah Zogby, who recently signed her National Letter of Intent to swim at Holy Cross, added, “The whole senior group took charge in leading us to the title… I think we’ve really taught the rest of the underclassmen what it means to race and be a team and I can graduate knowing that we’ve left a good feeling behind.”

The Panthers jumped out to a quick start and took control of the meet. After four events, Franklin was ahead by nearly 40 points on second place Taunton. That jumped to a 195-109 lead after the fifth event and the meet turned into a race for second place.

Ashley Loomis was a standout for the Panthers on Saturday. She claimed the 200-yard freestyle title in a time of 1:58.58, which was 13 seconds better than Jennie King of Taunton in second. Loomis added a similarly dominant performance in the 500-yard freestyle, winning with a time of 5:15.49, which was nearly 20 seconds better than Sam Nason of King Philip.

Loomis also was part of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams that each took first for Franklin.

“We were confident, but we didn’t let that stop us from racing hard and I think that showed in how much we succeeded,” said Zogby about the team embracing the favorite tag that came from winning the dual meet season.

Zogby, who won the 200-yard IM and took third in the 100-yard butterfly, added, “We have a big team, great coaching throughout the year, and you just see kids get better in the pool everyday and that’s rewarding too.”

Depth was a key to the Panthers success in winning the meet title. Franklin had one of the larger teams in the meet and, as Pridham explained, it was not just Zogby or Loomis bringing in first place points, but the ability to score points up and down the roster that helped the Panthers win so decisively.

She said, “We have depth and, yes, we have girls that finish first in the Hockomock and we have girls that finish second and third, but we have a lot of what I like to call clean-up swimmers who come in sixth and seventh and 10th and accumulate points for us.”

When asked what it meant to be the top team in the league, Pridham replied, “In a dual meet we’ve got one other team to compete against but bringing the whole Hock together and being able to compete at everybody’s level…it’s awesome.”

In addition to Franklin swimmers, several others had notable performances in the pool on Saturday. Emma Bridges of Foxboro won both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke. Tiffany Ha of Canton won the 100-yard freestyle, narrowly beating out Callie Sullivan of King Philip, and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke.

Tara Zhou of Sharon won the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke, was part of the Eagles’ winning 200-yard medley relay team that took first and the 400-yard freestyle team that claimed second place.

Oliver Ames, 2 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – With the draw OA wins the outright Davenport title. Nathaniel Cardoza scored with six minutes remaining to earn the draw. Chris Romero opened the scoring for the Tigers in the first half and had two others called back. Devante Teixeira equalized in the first half and then assisted on Anthony Barreira’s go-ahead goal early in the second.

King Philip, 1 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – King Philip sophomore Tyler Mann put the Warriors up a goal with just over 10 minutes left to play but just a minute later Nick Parent headed home a service from Austin Kent to knot the game at one.

Mansfield, 2 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – After a scoreless first half, Mansfield scored twice inside the opening minutes of the second half. Jareme DiLorenzo opened the scoring off an assist from Nick Hyland then Charlie Rogers doubled the lead off a feed from Brad Eames. Michael Kirejczyk made eight saves to record his 10th save, which is a single season record for Mansfield. With the win, the Hornets clinch the program’s first ever outright Hockomock title.
Stoughton, 2 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Stoughton freshman Fabio Ponce De Leon scored an early goal, converting a shot at the near post while sophomore Tyler Melo doubled the lead off a cross from junior Jeremy Fishman. Head coach Aaron Salter said Kyle Silverman made an outstanding save at the end of the match to keep the clean sheet. With the win, Stoughton qualified for the state tournament for the second straight year.
Girls Soccer
North Attleboro, 0 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Rebekah Entwistle scored the lone goal of the game for the Bombardiers to win the Blue-Red Cup. Kayla Merritt had the assist. Madison Brown (Attleboro) and Hana Caster (North) were named the game’s MVPs.

Sharon, 1 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Shannon Foley and Sarah MacQuarrie each had a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs. Lilah Sullivan had Canton’s other goals.

Stoughton’s goal was scored by Amelia Cochran off an assist from Emmie Sprague. Marissa Williams and Alecia Quinones both played well in net for the Black Knights according to head coach Tara Daniels.

Sharon, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton got the win at home with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-11 victory. Sarah Reissfelder had six kills and Nicole Poole paced the offense with 23 assists and added 12 digs. Canton head coach Pat Cawley said Emma Gobbi, Kaitlin McCarthy and Kelly Dever played well at the net.

Foxboro, 3 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final

King Philip, 3 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – With the match tied 1-1, KP picked up the a vital win in game three and walked away with a 25-11, 16-25, 27-25, 25-21 win. Josie Rowean led the way with 16 kills, Gwen Uyrus added six kill, Amelia Murphy and Emma Lopez each had four kills and Micaela Murray had seven digs. Franklin’s Aubrie Kutil had 10 kills, Beth Neal had 19 assists, seven kills and two blocks and Alyssa Shea had seven kills.

Mansfield, 3 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – With a win and a loss from Franklin, Mansfield clinched a share of the Hockomock League’s Kelley-Rex title, the program’s first ever Hockomock League title. Mansfield picked up the sweep with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-19. Cathryn Heavey had 31 assists, Sarah Mullahy had 17 service points, Meg Hill had 15 kills and Jess Haradon finished with 10 digs.

Sharon, 1 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Sharon’s Oliver Hu scored the lone goal of the game with just over 10 minutes to play, converting a pass from Lucas Allaria in the 70th minute. Mike Da Silva made five saves in net for the Scarlet Hawks.

Taunton, 1 @ North Attleboro, 2 – Final – Gareth King scored a pair of goals inside a five minute span, lifting the Rocketeers to their first win of the season. Taunton took the lead in the second half but just 15 seconds later King finished off a through ball from Gabe Pinhancos. Three minutes after that, Kevin Aguilar set up King for the game winner.

Stoughton, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final – Oliver Ames senior Keegan Nutt, junior Thomas McCormick and senior Chris Romero all scored goals in the first half as the Tigers built a 3-0 lead at the break. King Philip, 1 @ Mansfield, 9 – Final – Mansfield’s offensive exploded for nine goals, led by a hat trick from junior Hannah Reiter. Alle Bezeau scored a pair of goals, Emma Oldow had two goals and an assist, Jen Kemp scored once and had an assist, Bryn Anderson netted a goal and Emma Goulet and Jackie Carchedi each notched a pair of assists.
Milford, 2 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Kristen Franzini netted both of Milford’s goals while Emily Duquette had a strong game in goal with nine saves for the Scarlet Hawks.

North Attleboro, 1 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Taunton scored first in the opening half but Haley Guertin, off an assist from sister Grace Guertin, leveled the score just over 10 minutes into the second half.

Oliver Ames, 7 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Francesca Calabraro had a hat trick and added an assist for the Tigers. Jackie Mills added two goals and an assist and Lauren Wright and Annabella Walsh each scored goals. Delaney Benton chipped in with three assists.
Volleyball
Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Franklin’s Caroline Maguire had seven aces and added four kills and a pair of blocks to lead the Panthers. Maddy Kuzio had four aces and a pair of digs and Lauren McGrath had 10 assists and three aces for Franklin.

Canton, 3 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final – Canton got the sweep on the road 25-15, 25-14, 28-26 and clinched its sixth straight Davenport Division title and ninth straight Hockomock League title overall, dating back to before the division split. Olivia Devoe had yet another strong game on defense with 15 digs while Elizabeth Hamilton dominated offensively with 20 kills and three aces, also chipping in with 19 digs. Canton head coach Pat Cawley praised the efforts of Kaitlin McCarthy, Emma Gobbi and Emma Murphy for their strong play at the net. Cawley also noted great defensive efforts from Julia Panico, Cassie Loftus and Maria Mackie.
Mansfield, 3 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – Mansfield picked up the sweep on the road, 25-15, 25-22, 25-23. Jess Haradon had 18 digs and 11 service points for the Hornets while Cathryn Heavey had 35 assists and 10 service points. Sarah Mullahy had seven kills, seven blocks, and nine service points while Alli Belanger added eight digs and nine service points. For King Philip, Josie Rowean had 13 kills, Amelia Murphy added five kills, Emma Lopez had three kills and Micaela Murray finished with 10 digs.

Canton, 0 @ Sharon, 2 – Final – Jake Goloboy opened the scoring for the Eagles off an assist from Shane Brandes in the 15th minute and Sonny Somdah added an unassisted goal 15 minutes later to double the lead.
Girls Soccer
Sharon, 5 vs. Norwood, 2 – Final – Amanda Klayman, Victoria Zambello, Ally Filipkowski, Ally Steinberg, and Alex Rabb all scored goals for the Eagles in the non-league win. Freshman Lydia Chase made 11 saves in her second varsity appearance.
Volleyball
Canton, 3 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Canton picked up a 25-18, 25-8, 25-13 division sweep. Elizabeth Hamilton led an entire team effort with 13 kills. Head coach Pat Cawley said Kaitlin McCarthy played great two way ball and Maria Mackie, Julia Panico, Kehla Minkin and Erika Lum all played great defense.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ Foxboro, 1 – Final – Dimitra Efremidis set up Nicole Walker for Oliver Ames’ lone goal, which came in the first half. Foxboro freshman Lily Daly tied the game off an assist from Meri Cronin late in the second half.

Franklin,1 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – Christina Quinn scored nine minutes into the game and it turned out to be the game-winner for the Panthers. KP goalie Abby Campbell made 14 saves to keep the Warriors in the game in the second half. Franklin goalie Sam Jones made a save with 1:30 left to preserve the win.

Milford, 0 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Courtney Campbell scored with five minutes left in the game off an assist from Mia Russell to lift the Black Knights. Kara Ploss had the shutout in goal for Stoughton while Milford goalie Emily Smith also had a strong game.

Oliver Ames, 157 @ Stoughton, 185 – Final – Oliver Ames’ Jack Green shot a match-low 37 to lead the Tigers while Steven Tasho, Ryan McGarry and Mark Bissonette each carded a 40. Josh Roos shot a 44 for the Black Knights.
Milford, 6 @ Hopedale, 3 – Final – In a non-league game against rival Hopedale, the Scarlet Hawks picked up a 6-3 win in match play format. Ryan Tomaso led Milford with a 33 while Anthony Arcudi and Zach Tammaro each shot 38.
Canton, 168 @ Foxboro, 190 – Final

Franklin, 174 @ Taunton, 162 – Final – Taunton’s Mario Wilson carded a match low round of 37 for the Tigers.

King Philip, 161 @ North Attleboro, 166 – Final – Todd Bushway and Sebastian Ladoulis led the way for the Warriors, each shooting 39. Robbie Congdon shot a team-low 39 for the Rocketeers.

Attleboro, 187 @ Sharon, 170 – Final – Ryan Crooks and Max Avratin both carded a 40 on the day, which was the low score for the match.
