In the life of any top program, there is a moment that takes a team from being one with potential to one that should be considered a threat to win a title every season.

For the Franklin girls’ lacrosse program that moment came in 2014. The team not only reached its first sectional final but also won the program’s first trophy, a springboard to the Panthers being considered among the state’s top teams every season.

“We had talented players and players who really wanted to take it to the next level,” said Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino, who was in her second year as the head coach in 2014. “They kind of got a taste the year before and then just set high goals and worked hard.”

In Igoe Guarino’s first season in charge, the Panthers went unbeaten in the league and won the Kelley-Rex division title outright (after sharing with King Philip the year before). Franklin was emerging as the dominant force in the Hockomock, which would be borne out by eight straight league titles and more than 80 straight league wins (and counting), but there was a desire to see the team compete at the state’s highest level against the likes of Westwood, Needham, Wellesley, and Notre Dame Academy.

The 2013 team reached the Div. 1 South semifinal but was beaten by Westwood, but left the season feeling like the program was on the brink of pushing through against the best teams. “The girls were confident in themselves, confident in their coaches, and vice versa,” said Igoe Guarino. “We kind of worked hard, saw improvements in the regular season, and we were just like, okay we can do this.”

It was a team loaded with talent. Senior midfielder Marta Versprille led the way in midfield and was both the league MVP and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year. Igoe Guarino explained, “Players like her and Maegan Schmauder, they weren’t just really good players but good people and good leaders and who really, really cared about the Franklin program and wanted to see it succeed and everyone just kind of fed off that.”

Franklin lost only three times in the regular season, by two to Needham, by 10 to Westwood, and by two to defending state champ NDA. It was the first season under the new realignment, which pushed the Panthers to the newly created East bracket and away from the only teams to be them in the regular season. They rolled to a win against Natick in the playoff opener.

In the semifinal against Lincoln-Sudbury, the Panthers battled back from 7-4 down at halftime thanks to a pair of goals from Emily Jeffries and one from Schmauder. Julia Jette had a chance to win it in regulation only to be denied with seconds left. L-S nearly took the lead in the final seconds of the first half of OT, but a free position goal was ruled after the horn. After Julia Bireley forced a turnover to get Franklin the ball late in the second half of OT, Schmauder scored from a free position with just six seconds left.

The final against Concord-Carlisle turned out to be even more dramatic.

Franklin led 10-9 and tried to hold the ball for the final four minutes. A turnover in the final minute turned into a tying goal and then the Patriots won the ensuing draw and raced upfield for the go-ahead score. The Panthers went from a goal up to a goal down in only 12 seconds and had only :31 left on the clock to try and save the season.

Franklin managed to get possession on the next draw and had a chance but Julianne Pisani’s shot was saved. Jeffries regained possession in midfield and was fouled. On the restart, she drew a triple-team as the clock ticked down but managed to squeeze a pass to sophomore Sheelagh Walsh, who angled towards goal and tied the game with just two seconds remaining.

“That game was back-and-forth the whole game then I think we tried to stall for a very long time and it didn’t work,” Igoe Guarino recalled. “It was right there and then it was gone and then it was tied again. That game was so up and down.”

After the Panthers forced a turnover in the first half of overtime, Schmauder scored what turned out to be the game-winner and sealed the first sectional title in program history. Although Franklin lost to Longmeadow in the state semifinal, bringing home a trophy added new goals and new expectations for the Panthers every spring.

“I think it was a huge springboard and a huge confidence boost,” said Igoe Guarino, who has won two more sectional titles since 2014. “I think a sectional title kind of justified all our work and efforts from the youth program up to the high school and kind of put us on the map.”

The Campus Report: A Review of Spring 2018

Former Attleboro standout Nate Tellier had a standout season for UMass Dartmouth. The sophomore appeared in all 40 games for the Corsairs, leading the team in almost every offensive statistic category, including runs scored (34), hits (63), triples (three), runs batted in (37), runs (34), stolen bases (19), batting average (.382), on-base percentage (.464), slugging percentage (.570). The offensive outburst was good enough for Tellier to be named to the LEC Second-Team, and the D3 Baseball All-New England Second Team.

Tellier wasn’t the only former Attleboro Bombardier to standout on the diamond. MIT senior Max Lancaster finished his senior season with a career-high .325 batting average. Lancaster tied his career high with 38 hits, and set career-best with 11 doubles, 28 runs batted in and 11 stolen bases. The senior’s best series of the year came in a three-game matchup against Emerson, where he recorded eight hits, six runs scored, two home runs and nine runs batted in. Lancaster landed a spot on the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Second Team for his performance this season.

Former two-time HockomockSports.com Girl’s Lacrosse Player of the Year Marta Versprille had an impressive senior season at Saint Anselm. The former Franklin midfielder started all 18 games for the Hawks, recording 26 goals and seven assists. Her 33 total points were the sixth most on the team, while she ranked third on the team in ground balls (39) and draw controls (59).

Framingham State sophomore, and former North Attleboro Red Rocketeer, Mycala Moody helped the Rams reach the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament this season. Moody batted .379 with five doubles, two triples, and 18 RBI during her sophomore campaign. After earning the 2017 MASCAC Rookie of the Year, Moody earned second team All-MASCAC honors this season.

Meg Colleran, another North Attleboro alumni and the 2014 HockomockSports.com Softball Player of the Year, wrapped up her senior season at UMass Amherst in impressive fashion. Colleran started 22 games of the 27 she appeared in for the 35-win Minutewomen, going an impressive 14-6 with a 2.99 ERA. Colleran was a perfect 9-0 in Atlantic 10 conference games, boasting an impressive 1.97 ERA in 12 appearances. She finishes her UMass career as one of 10 Minutewomen in program history to eclipse the 20-win mark in 2016, while becoming one of five to reach that mark in multiple seasons in 2017.

A pair of former Hockomock standouts helped Springfield College Lacrosse to a 13-6 record. Franklin’s Jack Vail started 17 games this season at attack, scoring 26 goals and leading the team with 30 assists. Connor Eschmann of King Philip helped man Springfield’s defense, appearing in all 18 games. Eschmann racked up the third most ground balls by any defender with 30, and was tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with 21.

Taunton’s Connor Johnson was one of three Maine Black Bears to land on the America East All-Academic team. On the field, Johnson led Maine with 28 appearances on the mound and carried the third-best earned run average on the team (3.71).

Former King Phillip standout and current Endicott Gull, Jen Lacroix, had a breakout sophomore season in 2018. Lacroix led the 14-win Gulls with 70 goals and 87 points. Her 70 goals were also enough to lead the entire Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) and rank 28th in the nation. Her impressive season allowed the attack to move into the Endicott record books, as she is tied for first in game-winning goals (6), second in goals (70), and fourth in points (87). Lacroix was also named to the 2018 All-CCC First Team along with the 2018 IWLCA Division III All-Pilgrim Region Second Team. She was also a two-time CCC Offensive Player of the Week (03/12/18, 03/26/18).

Luc Valenza’s senior season at UMass Amherst was a successful one. He former Foxboro Warrior appeared in all 17 games on defense for the Minuteman, starting 14. Valenza finished the year with 24 groundballs and caused 15 turnovers. He also recorded his first ever goal and second ever collegiate point earlier this season versus Hofstra. Valenza’s efforts were rewarded with selection to the All-CAA First Team and USILA North-South All-Star Game Selection.

At Central Connecticut, King Phillip’s Tori Constantin wrapped up her senior season with the Blue Devils by playing 47 games and setting career-high in runs, hits, home runs, runs batted in, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Her strong season was rewarded with a spot on the 2018 NEC Women’s Softball Second Team All-Conference.

Maria Woodall started all 21 games in goal for the Westfield State University Owls. In those 21 games, Woodall led Westfield to an 18-3 record, along with winning the MASCAC regular season and tournament titles. After leading the league in goals against average (8.26), save percentage (.565) and total saves (183), Woodall was named the 2018 MASCAC women’s lacrosse player of the year. She also earned honors on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’ all-region team and was a second-team choice in the IWLCA’s “Berkshire” Region.

Former Mansfield Hornet Will Kelleher provided a valuable bat for the Stonehill Skyhawks this season. Kelleher recorded the third-most at-bats for the team (144), and was second on the team in doubles (12) and runs batted in (20). The junior’s season also saw new career highs in games played (39), runs scored (20) and slugging percentage (.347).

Over at Lyndon State, Sharon’s former attack Spencer Aubin had the second most points (34) on the Hornets in 16 games. Aubin’s 20 goals were third most on the club and his 14 assists ranked second. Aubin ended the season recording points in six of his final nine games, including back-to-back hat tricks against Green Mountain and Albertus Magnus.

Attleboro’s Kayla Merritt finished with 14 points during her sophomore season with the Curry Women’s Lacrosse Team. Merritt scored 11 goals in 12 games played and added 14 assists and 11 ground balls. Merritt was named a captain for her junior season.

At Penn State, King Philip alumni Christa Wagner earned the starting right field spot for the Nittany Lions. She started 17 games in right during her sophomore season, recording 11 hits, six runs and four runs batted in. Wagner also was able to steal bases and notched 15 putouts in right field.

A pair of former Hockomock athletes provided valuable contributions to the Fitchburg State softball team. King Philip’s Melissa DiPhilippo had a career season, posting a career high in nearly every single offensive category. Her 24 hits ranked fourth best on the team, and her .343 batting average ranked third. Former Attleboro Bombardier Mikayla Harnois started 12 games for the Falcons, posting a team-high 79 innings pitched. Harnois’ best game of the season came against Mount Ida, where the sophomore went seven innings without allowing a run.

Junior Mike Ferrara posted impressive numbers in his most recent season at Worcester State. The former Oliver Ames standout led the Lancers in at-bats (135), home runs (four), runs batted in (31), and slugging percentage (.496). Ferrara also set new personal career highs in batting average (.348) and on-base percentage (.384).

The Western New England Golden Bears women’s lacrosse team saw a pair of Hockomock athletes patrolling the defensive unit, both former Franklin Panthers. Rebecca Allen started 16 of the 18 games she appeared in, setting career high for goals (three), assists (nine) and points (12). Olivia Truenow started all 17 games she appeared in, while also setting a career high in goals (five), assists (two) and points (seven). Both Allen and Truenow led the entire Golden Bears defense in ground balls with 30 and 35 respectively.

Another former Franklin Panther provided the New Haven women’s lacrosse team with a strong season. Julia Jette recorded the fourth most points on the Chargers, with 42 (28 goals, 14 assists) – a new career high. Jette wasn’t the only Hockomock athlete to impact the Chargers, as Mansfield’s Caroline Maher posted 40 goals and 26 assists.

Saint Joseph’s College of Maine’s goalie Connor Trainor had a strong senior season in net for the Monks. Trainor posted a 9.59 goals-against average with a .505 save percentage while being named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference Third Team. The former Franklin Panther led the conference in wins (10), ranked second in games (19) and minutes (1000:32), and fourth in goals-against average this spring. As his career ends, Trainor ranks second in team history in goalkeeper games (60), minutes (2,906), saves (527), wins (23), and shots faced (1679) and third in goals-against average (9.81) and save percentage (.526). He was also one of two Monks to be selected to play in the 2018 New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) East-West Senior All-Star Game.

Attleboro’s Hannah Smith and King Philip’s Maddie O’Gryzek helped pace the UMass Dartmouth’s pitching staff and lineup respectively. Smith started a career-high 24-games for the Corsairs with 131.1 innings of work. She collected 13 wins while finished inside the top-three for wins and earned run average (1.97) while coming top-five for strikeouts (93) and innings pitched. Smith earned her second straight selection to the Little East Conference Second Team. O’Gryzek appeared in all but two games for the Corsairs, recording the second most at-bats on the team (126). She showcased her speed, leading the Corsairs in triples (four) and stolen bases (11). O’Gryzek also set a new career high .389 slugging percentage.

Senior attack Sam Sullivan led Plymouth State with 60 goals while starting all 18 games. The 60 goals were a career high for the former Canton Bulldog, while she also broke career highs in assists (16) and points scored (76). The new marks carried Sullivan to her second straight selection to the All-LEC First Team. She leaves the program as the second player to record three 50-goals. She also ranks in the top ten in the LEC with her 73 points (sixth) and 16 assists (ninth). The co-captain was a two-time Player of the Week selection and is currently fourth all-time in career goals (163) and eighth in program history with 194 career points.

Another former Bulldog saw success on the baseball diamond. Drew Blake belted a team and career-high with eight home runs during his senior season at Fairfield University. Blake led his team with a .477 slugging percentage while starting 40 games for the Stags. Blake was also selected to the All-MAAC Academic Team.

Over at Clark University, Brandon King was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference first team. The former King Phillip standout led the Cougars with 43 goals, which ranked third in the entire NEWMAC. He also added six assists and a team-high 49 points. King twice posted a season-high six goals in Clark’s victories over Salve Regina and Saint John Fisher.

Aimee Kistner had a strong season on the hill for the Western New England Golden Bears. The sophomore appeared in 22 games, starting 15, while recording 11 wins in 113.2 innings of work. Kistner led her team with 119 strikeouts and posted a career-best 2.46 earned run average. Her best performance of the season came against Curry College, where the Taunton graduate threw seven scoreless innings while striking out 10.

At Colorado Mesa, Brian Buckner was named to the Second Team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). Buckner started 13 games while appearing in 18 as a long stick midfielder, piling up 21 ground balls and causing eight turnovers. Buckner also put up two points on the season while scoring his first career goal.

A pair of Hockomock alums played a role in Framingham State’s 16-3 season. Former Canton Bulldog Casey Bradley started all 19 games on defense for the Rams, which marks the second straight season in which she has done so. Bradley posted a career-high 32 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers, the most out of any Ram defender. Mansfield graduate Kim Foley earned her third first team All-MASCAC honors after scoring 46 goals and 34 assists for 80 points during her senior season. Foley finishes her career with 156 goals, 71 assists and 227 career points which ranks her first all-time in career assists and second all-time in points and goals in program history.

Katie Notarangelo was named the NEWMAC Co-Defensive Athlete of the Year while earning a spot on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Region Second Team. Notarangelo scored 60 goals on the season, finishing her career with the sixth most goals in the Institute’s history (145). She also finished with a record for draw controls in a game (15) and in program history ranked third in draw controls (239), tied for fourth in groundballs (127), fifth in caused turnovers (77), and 10th in points (170). In addition, she is currently seventh in the country in free-position percentage (.733).

Former Mansfield Hornet Sabrina Pray qualified seventh in the 100-meter hurdles for the Westfield State University Owls. Pray’s seed time is 14.29 seconds, which was faster than her mark at last year’s NCAA meet. She entered the meet as the 22nd seed and advanced to the finals, where she placed seventh to earn All-America Honors.

A trio of Hockomock athletes helped Bridgewater State University men’s outdoor track and field team capture the meet title at the 11th Annual Eastern Invitational. Cameron Williamson (OA) grabbed top honors in the triple jump with 46’8″/14.22m mark. John Chretien (Taunton) finished third in the javelin, throwing 168’4’’/51.30m. Senior Austin James (Mansfield) placed second in both shot put (46’8″/14.22m) and the discus (137’3″/41.84m). All three posted Division III New England Championships qualifying marks.

On the Bridgewater State women’s track and field team, Milford’s Jenise Madden was one of three team members to earn All-New England honors at the Division III New England Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Madden placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:10.48 to qualify.

Courtney Daggett earned All-East Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Competing as a jumper for Stonehill College, the former Attleboro Bombardier posted her third-career regional honor. She cleared the bar at 5 feet, 4.5 inches at the Silfen Invitational, which marked a season best for the junior as she took home second from the meet.

Ben Chaffee became a regular in the WPI men’s baseball team lineup for the second half of the season, and the Franklin alum answered the bell. Chaffe slashed .386/.474/.482 and drove in 11 runs in his 24 games. The junior ended his season recording hits in 18 of his last 20 games played, including four three-hit games.

Franklin Offense Stalls In State Semifinal Loss

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Franklin defense was able to keep the Panthers in Monday evening’s Div. 1 state semifinal at Babson College’s MacDowell Field, holding North Andover to just eight goals (two of them empty net goals in the final minutes), but the offense faltered against the Scarlet Knights’ zone look.

“Not many teams play it,” said Franklin coach Kristin Igoe of the North Andover scheme. “We’re used to man-to-man and we’re successful against it. We knew that they played a backer, so I told them it’s nothing we haven’t seen but it was the unforced errors – throwing it into their sticks or their goalie intercepting.”

The Panthers were limited to just two goals in each half, their lowest scoring output of the season, and saw their season come to a close with an 8-4 loss.

“Our ‘D’ has carried our game all season and I think they did it again tonight,” said North Andover coach Meredith Prior. “Two goals per half, that’s pretty low in lacrosse and I think Lauren Hiller came up huge and that’s why she’s the best goalie in the state.”

In the first half, senior Dani Lonati was a match for Hiller, a University of Massachusetts commit, with eight of her 10 saves. After Julia Jette opened the scoring 29 seconds into the game off an assist by Kendall Reardon, Lonati stopped four shots, including two free positions, on the first North Andover possession.

She continued to dominate the Knights as the half wore on and Diana Griffin doubled Franklin’s lead with 15:02 before the break on an assist by Caroline Lounsbury. Unfortunately for Franklin that would be the last goal that it would score for the next 27 minutes of game time.

“Six goals against…I thought our defense was amazing,” said Igoe. “Especially in that first half, Dani Lonati was on fire and she really kept us in the game. I think our trouble was offensively just capitalizing and then unforced errors kind of hurt us in the end.”

North Andover scored twice before halftime to tie the game and then added two more in the opening eight minutes of the second half. Freshman Annie Walsh got one back for the Panthers when she bounced in a free position goal that cut the deficit to just one.

“With the backer you can’t really dodge, so you can’t just go because there’s someone on the ball and someone waiting to back up that person,” said Igoe. “So, you have to be patient and move the ball and I thought we did a much better job of that in the second half.”

Again, the Knights had the answer, scoring the next two goals before Emily Spath ended the run with a free position with 4:40 remaining. By that time, Igoe had already called Lonati off the field to get an extra defender on and the Knights would take advantage of the empty net to tack on two more goals.

“I’ve been in that place, exactly where Franklin was, the past two years where you’re going as hard as you can and it’s not a fun place to be and I’m glad we’re on the other side of it this season,” said Prior.

While disappointed in the loss, Igoe refused to let that be the final word on the Panthers and the season that they have had, which included the program’s second sectional title and another undefeated Hockomock League championship.

“I told them don’t let one game define you,” said Igoe. “At the beginning of the season, I wasn’t sure how it would go. In the first Needham game, someone asked how we were going to do and I said, I don’t know; we could get killed and then we tied them and from there this team won a sectional championship.

“They worked hard all season long and credit to the seniors for bringing us this far and I’m excited for the future.”

Second Half Rally Lifts Franklin to D1 East Title

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Prior to taking on Acton-Boxboro, Franklin gathered together to watch footage of the program’s only sectional title win. The players were inspired by the film of the dramatic victory over Concord-Carlisle, but those positive memories did not translate into a great start to Thursday’s Div. 1 East final at Pisini Field.

The Panthers struggled to find the cage in the first half against the Colonials and went into halftime trailing 5-2. Franklin did not panic. The players huddled together, reminded of the tough games that they have played this season, and made a couple of small changes.

“We’ve been down 12-0 before at halftime, to Westwood, and I said that to them, so 5-2 was nothing,” said Franklin coach Kristin Igoe. “And it wasn’t anything dramatic going on, it was little things that we could fix. So, we didn’t get down on ourselves.”

The Panthers turned the game on its head with five straight goals after halftime and then held on to possession for the final four minutes of the game to pull out a 7-6 victory to claim the program’s second sectional title.

“It feels amazing, my senior year, our home turf…there’s no better feeling,” said senior midfielder Kenzie Pleshaw. The recently-named Hockomock League MVP scored three goals to lead the Panthers.

Pleshaw opened the scoring after six minutes of possession by the Panthers. A-B answered right back off the ensuing draw and then, five minutes of Franklin possession later, forced a turnover and scored in transition to take the lead.

After A-B scored its third, freshman Annie Walsh scooped a ground ball in the defensive zone and started a quick break that flowed through Julia Jette up to Emily Spath, who finished to make it 3-2. The momentum did not stick with the home team, as A-B closed the half with a pair of goals, while Franklin went 10 minutes without finding the back of the net.

“I think shooting, a little bit,” said Igoe about the problems of the first half. “I think once we pushed the fast break, which we wanted to do, and we got momentum we felt more confident.”

Pleshaw was asked what the team talked about at the break. She responded, “Just come out and play like it’s 0-0. This is our field and we don’t want to go home with a loss on our own turf. We just told the girls to come out and play with heart.”

The Panthers answered the call and it was Pleshaw that gave them the spark with a goal five minutes after the break. It was a patient possession and she took multiple opportunities to probe the A-B defense before dodging past her marker and finishing on the run.

Two minutes later, Franklin burst forward in transition and Kendall Reardon caught the A-B goalie out of position to feed Spath all alone in front of the cage to make it 5-4. Walsh won the ensuing draw control and then bounced in the game-tying goal from a free position.

A-B smacked the bar with a shot in transition, but that was a rare chance for the Colonials in the second half. Dani Lonati made four saves for the Panthers and the defense, led as always by Olivia Truenow, Sam Jones, and Dana Lewandowski, stymied A-B time and time again.

“We changed up the game plan a little bit; [Julia Neyland] was doing great for them and we marked her up a little tighter and…when the other team went to goal we just crashed, no swinging,” said Igoe.

Julia Jette gave the Panthers their first lead since it was 1-0 when she finished off a pass by Caroline Lounsbury from a free position. Pleshaw raced down straight off the draw and drove to the net to give Franklin a two-goal lead with her third of the game.

Caroline Maxwell scored off an eight-meter opportunity to cut the lead back to one with 9:02 remaining, but it would be the last goal of the game.

With 3:59 remaining, the Panthers grabbed possession in front of their bench and Igoe immediately called timeout. Franklin set up a plan for the final minutes that included attempting to score another goal but A-B goalie Brenna Keefe made two big saves.

Franklin kept possession both times and Igoe called another timeout with 1:30 to go and this time it was all about the stall. She explained, “I didn’t want to completely stall with four minutes left…but we took a couple shots and their goalie made excellent saves, so after that I’m just like she’s awesome why don’t we hold the ball?”

Pleshaw admitted there were “flashbacks” to last year and the semifinal against Lincoln-Sudbury where the Panthers turned the ball over in the final minute and the Warriors scored to tie the game and then eventually won in OT.

This time, Franklin held on, swinging the ball from side to side, and pulled out the victory to set off a celebration made even sweeter by the fact it was taking place on home turf.

“We just ran our hearts out and even though we were tired it didn’t matter,” said Pleshaw. “If you had the ball, you were going to run like you were in a marathon.

“We have eight seniors who want to go far and we didn’t want this to be our last game.”

Igoe added, “I think the girls really deserve it. You’ve really got to keep pushing through in the postseason and they really did that today. No matter what the situation was…it’s just an accumulation of the season.”

Franklin (19-4) will face North champion North Andover in the state semifinal at Babson College on Monday. The teams squared off in April with the Scarlet Knights pulling out a 9-8 win.

Battle Tested Panthers Return to D1 East Final

FRANKLIN, Mass. – For the second time in three seasons, Franklin will be playing in the Div. 1 East final, following a 14-7 victory on Tuesday night against fifth seed Bishop Feehan at Pisini Field.

The Panthers beat Feehan for the second time this season (Franklin won 10-3 in the regular season meeting) and the experience of playing a regular season schedule loaded with tournament-caliber opponents, including many ranked in the top 10 in the state, is paying off, according to head coach Kristin Igoe.

“I definitely think strength of schedule is a big factor,” she explained. “We’ve been in games where we’re up, we’ve been crushed, and we’ve been close at half…we’ve had every situation and I think that helps in the tournament.”

The Panthers have faced the likes of Westwood, Notre Dame Academy (Hingham), and Needham, which are widely considered the top three programs in the state, as well as perennial Div. 1 powers like North Andover, Lincoln-Sudbury, and Andover.

With that experience under their belts, Franklin was ready to play a type of defense that Feehan coach Nancy Anderson-Semple admitted was on a different level of physicality than the Shamrocks had encountered in the regular season.

“They’re playing teams that are tougher than ours during the season, so they’re used to playing that way,” said Anderson-Semple. “A lot of our kids have bruises everywhere, hits to the head, all that kind of stuff; we’re not used to that physical type of play.

“They have a tougher schedule where I guess they’re allowed to do that, so that was a little bit of a shock to the girls.”

While the Panthers had success against the Shamrocks in the regular season, Igoe insisted her team was focused to take on Feehan on Tuesday.

She said, “Our biggest thing was don’t underestimate Bishop Feehan. Even though we beat them in the regular season, it doesn’t matter. It’s tournament; it’s a whole new slate.

Thanks to strong play on the draws from senior Mandy Semple, Feehan was able to hang with the Panthers early in the game. Freshman Annie Walsh opened the scoring on a drive to her right hand three minutes in but the Shamrocks quickly answered to tie it.

Kendall Reardon scored on a low, eight-meter shot to regain the lead and Kenzie Pleshaw, who was recently named the Hockomock League MVP, made it 3-1 with a sidearm shot on the run, undeterred by a bump on her way to goal. Semple got one back but Emily Spath came down 24 seconds later to make it 4-2.

“They have an excellent draw taker and that’s where their momentum was,” said Igoe. “They would constantly win draws, which wasn’t good for us, but if they scored our defense shut them down on the next one of Dani [Lonati} made a save. It was important to not them get on a run.”

The defensive unit for Franklin proved to be the difference in the first half with a strong ride that stymied the Shamrocks in transition and then a settled defense that took away cuts and passing lanes. Led by Sam Jones, Olivia Truenow, Grace McDermott, and Dana Lewandowski, among others, the Panthers would limit Feehan to just three goals in the opening half.

Meanwhile, the offense was clicking into gear. Caroline Lounsbury assisted on Spath’s goal and on the next goal by Julia Jette that capped off a transition started by Truenow’s outlet pass. After Semple scored her second, Lounsbury converted an eight-meter try for her first goal of the game.

Pleshaw capped the half with a pinpoint shot across her body into the top corner with three seconds on the clock to give Franklin an 8-3 lead at the break.

Feehan tried to turn things around in the second half and again the draw controls played their part as the Shamrocks won the first two and turned both into goals by Caroline Toomey. But, Walsh snagged the next draw control for the Panthers and then converted on a free position for her second of the night.

“You would never know that she was a freshman,” said Igoe of Walsh. “The way she ran up and down the midfield today, she played like a senior. She may not get credit for all the goals and assists but the ground balls, the draws, she caused turnovers, she didn’t give them second chances.”

Semple converted her hat trick but Feehan still could not put a run together, as the score stayed 9-6 or five minutes before Diana Griffin put one under the bar for the Panthers, which was followed by goals from Pleshaw and Reardon to build the lead to six.

Feehan scored to make it 12-7 with 5:20 remaining but before the ensuing draw, lightning was seen and the teams had to take a 45-minute break until the weather cleared. Walsh scored off an assist by Pleshaw and then played provider on Griffin’s second to let the Panthers close out the game in style.

It was not unexpected to see the Panthers, the top seed in the sectional, get back into the final, but a little bit of a surprise is that it will be Acton-Boxboro making the trip to Franklin on Thursday night, not No. 2 seed Lincoln-Sudbury.

When asked about A-B, Igoe remarked, “I know they beat a great Concord team and a great L-S team, so they must be good. They were losing a bunch and people kind of doubted them and they said, who cares. They must be good and we’re not going to underestimate them.”

The final is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m.

Figueira struck out seven and allowed three hits and four walks in a no decision. Christian Simoes, Jack Moynihan and Matt Machado each had two hits for Taunton, which totaled 11 hits as a team.

#12 Oliver Ames, 0 @ #5 Nauset, 9 – Final – Oliver Ames only registered a pair of hits against Nauset pitcher Paul Prue, who tossed a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts. Senior Josh Minuskin had a triple and sophomore Matt Muir had a single for OA.

#14 Canton, 1 @ #3 Middleboro, 0 – Final (9 inn.) – Canton senior Kevin Powers tossed a complete game, nine inning shutout to lead the Bulldogs past the defending D2 State Champions. Powers worked around a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the eighth and the Bulldogs went on to score the winning run in the top of the ninth. Jim Jenkins had his second hit of the game, a double, and moved to third on a bunt from Jimmy Hamrock. Sean Doyle then connected and Jenkins came home to score on an error. Powers stretched his scoreless inning streak to 24 straight, scattering five hits while striking out six batters. Mike McMahon also had two hits for Canton while Joe Peccia (11 putouts), Joe Bires and Matt Casamento each had a hit.

Head coach Kristin Igoe credited her defense with a very strong game, led by Sam Jones, who won six draws and two ground balls.

Pat Hagerty paced Stoughton’s offense from the lead off spot, going 3-4 with an RBI and a stolen base and Ryan Sullivan also added three hits, a stolen base and a run scored for the Black Knights. Joe Piana broke up a 2-2 game in the fifth inning with a two run single, Justin Hutchinson had a pair of hits and Doug Seaman (2-4, two RBI) helped cement the win with a home run in the top of the seventh.

Foxboro, 1 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Aaron Wentling dazzled on the mound, striking out seven in a complete game two-hit shutout effort for the Warriors. Foxboro’s lone run came via junior Cam Feldman with an RBI fielder’s choice.

North Attleboro, 5 @ Franklin, 6 – Final – North Attleboro plated four runs in the first inning but Franklin’s bullpen limited the Rocketeers to just three hits over the final 6.2 innings and the Panthers offense chipped away to get the win and qualify for the state tournament. Bryan Woelfel came in with one out and the bases loaded in the first and was able to limit the damage for Franklin. Woelfel went five innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out three. Ryan Morse got the win, allowing just a hit in 1.2 innings. Franklin scored a run in the first, two more in the third and two more in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. North tied the game in the top of the sixth but sophomore Steven Luttazi scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth for the Panthers. Sophomore Jason Ulrickson went 2-3 and knocked in a pair of runs, Mike Skaza was 1-1 with a pair of walks, an RBI and a run scored and Tyler Gomes went 1-3 with an RBI and a double. Ryan Hodgkins (2-4) scored twice for Franklin and Cam Benham scored once. Andy Katch went 2-3 for North while Zach DeMattio had two RBI for Big Red.

Oliver Ames, 10 @ Milford, 4 – Final – Senior Kevin Geary notched his first career win on the mound as the Tigers rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take the lead. Sophomore Matt Muir cleared the bases with a three run triple, giving the Tigers the lead. Chris Romero, Josh Minuskin and Ryan Adams each had three hits on the day for OA while Muir, Matt Mancini and Chris Pearsons each had two.

Mansfield, 6 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Mansfield senior Maddie Letendre tossed her first no-hitter of the season, striking out seven in the win. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the fifth and then tacked on five more runs in the sixth. Consecutive singles from Bri Homer, Jocelyn Reardon and Marissa Staffier resulted in the first run. In the sixth inning, Kara Bendanillo singled, Mady Bendanillo walked, Maddie Letendre had an RBI single, Rachel Carafa had a two RBI single, Reardon knocked in a pair with a double, Marissa Staffier knocked in another run and Megan Letendre singled.

Canton, 3 @ Stoughton, 7 – Final – Karly Estremera and Sam Tullis set the pace for Stoughton’s offense, each scoring two runs each. Estremera hit a triple and stole two bases including a delayed steal of home while Sam Tullis added a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Gina Carafa pitched seven innings, striking out five while giving up one earned run.

Sharon, 1 @ Foxboro, 9 – Final – Foxboro celebrated its seniors with a hit parade, totaling 12 as a team. Emma Rohan struck out 10 while allowing just three base runners (two hits and a walk). Offensively, Kelli McCarthy went 2-4 with two RBI, Hannah Davis was 3-4 with a home run, a pair of doubles and three RBI, Kelly Fisher and Kayley Tran each went 2-4 while Chelsea Gibbons was 2-3 on the day for the Warriors.

North Attleboro, 4 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – The Panthers used a suicide squeeze to score the winning run in bottom of the seventh for the win. Olivia DiGiacomo laid down a bunt with one out to score courtesy runner Kerry Blaney for the win. Maddie Connelly got things started in the final inning with a lead off double and moved to third on a single from Clara DeCarvalho (2-4, RBI double), who moved to second on the throw. A passed ball gave Franklin a shot to score the run but North was able to get the runner at home. After a walk to Alexx Niss (2-3, RBI double), DiGiacomo squeezed in the run. Before the winning run, Franklin rallied from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the sixth. Olivia Haba (2-3) led off with a single and pinch hitter Kim Moulton blasted a two-run home run to the game. Caroline D’Aprile got the win for Franklin, striking out five. Meg Barlow had three hits for the Rocketeers and Mycala Moody and Kaylea Sherman each had two.

Taunton, 2 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – Strong defense helped anchor Taunton’s season sweep over the Warriors. Taunton head coach Dave Lewry said Jordan Wade played great at shortstop and Meghan Navarro did the same at second base. Lewry also pointed to Bailey Clapp’s outfield assist in the fifth, throwing out a runner with Sarah Bagge applying the tag at home. Aimee Kistner struck out four, allowing three hits in a complete game shutout. Liana Duarte went 2-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, Jaime Brown was 1-3 with a double and Bagge went 2-3.

Milford, 15 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final (5 inn.) – Milford clinched at least a share of its fourth straight Davenport title, winning at least a share of the division ever since joining the Hockomock. Jess Tomaso was a perfect 4-4 at the plate, including a two run home run, and finished with five RBI. Kaitlyn DeCapua knocked in four runs on three hits, including a double, while Megan Jacques went 2-4 with an RBI. Kelley Reichert struck out four while scattering three hits for Milford. Jamie Gottwald went 2-2 with an RBI and a double for OA.

Foxboro, 6 @ Mansfield, 10 – Final – Mansfield built a 9-1 lead in the fourth quarter and held off a late push by the Warriors. Ryan Smith had two goals and two assists to lead the Hornets while Connor Finerty also found the back of the net twice. Josh Schafer, Sam O’Connell, Hunter Ferreira (two assists), Joe Cox, Billy Grant and Jon Reed each scored once for Mansfield. Sean Powers made 13 saves in net for the Hornets.

North Attleboro, 6 @ King Philip, 8 – Final – King Philip built a 4-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and never trailed in a battle against North Attleboro. Senior Sam Agricola led the way offensively with three goals and an assist and junior Tim Watson potted two goals and had one assist. Harry Fallon had two helpers for KP while Anthony Truini, John DeLuca and Zach D’Amico (six ground balls) each scored once. Steven Eaton led the Warriors with 10 ground balls and KP head coach Jacob Kravitz praised the work of sophomore midfielder Nate Minkwitz (five ground balls) for his excellent defense.

Cathryn Heavey and Chloe Peters won 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles for Mansfield and freshmen Tessa Garufi and Elizabeth Elsner won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles.

Canton, 4 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – The Bulldogs got a clean sweep in singles play and earned another win at doubles to beat Stoughton. Carly Scanlon won 6-2, 6-1 at first singles, Skyler Jabbour won 6-1, 6-0 at second singles and Jude Aboukhater won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. Canton’s Tiffany Ha and Sarah MacQuarrie won 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles. Stoughton’s Kathleen Lapommeray and Amanda Galant won 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) at second doubles.

Sharon, 3 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Sharon clinched the Davenport division title for the second straight year, this time winning it outright. The Eagles swept doubles play while freshman Nupur Shulka rallied from a 1-5 deficit in the second set at second singles to secure the win for Sharon.

North Attleboro, 5 @ Franklin, 0 – Final – North Attleboro and Franklin battled under the lights at the new courts at FHS. North Attleboro’s Julia Mark won 6-4, 6-4 at first singles, Jordan Willis won 6-0, 6-2 at second singles and Allie Grinavic swept 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. The team of Jhanavi Kapadia and Emily Chiasson won 7-5, 6-3 at first doubles and Gabby Duva and Katie Demontigny secured a 6-3, 6-2 win at second doubles for the Rocketeers.

Milford, 2 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – The Tigers swept singles play to secure a win over the visiting Scarlet Hawks. Riley Spillane won 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 at first singles, Valeria Tueme won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at second singles and Sarah Leger took a 6-4, 6-3 decision at third singles. Milford’s Julie Rabinowitcz and Megan Cafarella won 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 win at first doubles and Kate Rosenblatt and Victoria Beyer won 6-4, 6-2 at second doubles.
