#15 Stoughton, 2 @ #2 Greater New Bedford, 4 – Final – Josh Mitchell put the Black Knights ahead with an early goal off an assist from Loubensky Lucas but GNBVT rallied to take a 2-1 lead at halftime. Will Peoples drilled a shot off the crossbar and in off a pass from Noah Schulze to level the game but GNBVT regained the lead 3-2. The Black Knights pushed numbers forward and went to three in the back and the Bears found the back of the net one final time.

Alexis Stowell and Meghan Doherty scored in the final 10 minutes to wrap up the win. Franklin advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals and will host #11 North Attleboro on Sunday, 11/8 at 4:00.

#12 Mansfield, 4 @ #5 Bridgewater-Raynham – Final – Jen Kemp scored a pair of goals while Jackie Carchedi had a pair of assists and also scored one goal. Katie Bongarzone also chipped in with a goal as the Hornets got the win at the road. Mansfield advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals and will travel to #4 Needham on Sunday, 11/8 at 2:00. The Mansfield boys will play Needham before at 12:00.

#4 Franklin, 4 vs. #20 King Philip, 0 – Final – Kelsey McPhee opened the scoring off an assist from Annie Walsh in the 11th minute. In the 23rd minute, Cassi Ronan added a goal off an assist from Taylor Reutlinger. Diana Griffin scored an unassisted goal and assisted on a goal by Walsh in the second half. Abby Campbell made 12 saves for KP. Franklin advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals and will host #5 Dennis Yarmouth on Sunday, 11/8 at 1:00.

#11 Oliver Ames, 2 @ #6 Somerset Berkley, 1 – Final (OT) – Nicole Walker set up senior Missy Krim for a breakaway chance in overtime and the senior co-captain buried it to give the Tigers the win. Walker scored the go-ahead goal in the first half off an assist from Hannah Friend before Somerset Berkley leveled it in the second half. Head coach Janice Sundell said Katie Davenport, Christina Boudreau and Sarah Stevens all played well defensively. Oliver Ames advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals and will travel to #3 Sandwich on Sunday, 11/8 at 3:00.

Second Half Scoring Sparks Stoughton Over Diman

STOUGHTON, Mass. – Stoughton dominated for the majority of the first half but a lack of serious scoring chances sent them into the halftime break knotted in a scoreless game against Diman.

That all changed in the early minutes of the second half as the Black Knights found the back of the net less than three minutes into the second half and added another 10 minutes later as Stoughton advanced in the playoffs with a 2-0 win over Diman.

In the 43rd minute, senior goalie Kyle Silverman sent a free kick from just outside his own area all the way up field and over the top of the defense. Senior Josh Mitchell chased in after the ball behind the defense and a simple header caught the Diman keeper a little bit off his line and found the back of the net to make it 1-0.

“I said to the boys, the first 25 minutes we were dominating possession and it looked we were going to create something but there wasn’t any clear cut chance for us,” Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter said. “It reminded me of the Canton game – scoreless at halftime and we were nervous. I didn’t feel like we were going to concede but we were panicking up front. We needed to relax and lucky enough, we came out good. It was a good pass from Kyle and Josh headed it very well.”

Just 10 minutes later, Silverman launched a punt up the right side of the field. Off a bounce, freshman Fabio Ponce de Leon brought the ball down with a terrific touch and outraced his defended to the end line. The first year midfielder then centered the ball with a cross that deflected off a defender and right to the feet of Loubensky Lucas, who calmly buried his chance from 12 yards out to make it 2-0.

“Once that went in, we settled in and we looked a little bit more lively,” Salter said. “The second goal was a good finish by Loubensky with a good run from Fabio. It was a game where we got the result in the end.”

Stoughton had a couple of chances inside the first 10 minutes but none that tested the Diman keeper. First Mitchell had a chance at the near post in the 2nd minute and then got his head to a cross from Noah Schulze in the 8th minute but both went over the bar.

In the 13th minute, Ponce de Leon got his head onto a long throw into the area from Mitchell but it went just wide at the far post. Ponce de Leon nearly opened the scoring in the 17th minute after Lucas took a long clearance and used his speed to get by the defense. His cross was headed by the freshman but a Diman defender was there on the line to clear it out.

Diman’s best chance came with just over 20 minutes left in the first half when a ball over the top was run onto by Dominic Rocha but Silverman came charging out and Rocha’s bid sailed over the bar.

In between goals in the second half, Mitchell nearly had a second when he took a free kick quickly but it was just over the bar.

The visitors’ lone chance of the second half came just over midway through the period when Alex Moura played a ball wide for Brian Carreiro, who served a tempting ball into the area but Silverman came off his line to punch it away.

“I didn’t feel like we were going to concede,” Salter said. “Especially the last three games, that’s our third clean sheet in a row. It looks like they’ve finally got it together. I can’t fault anyone on the backline today, they were all brilliant. Goddy [Fombe] is the coolest, calmest head I’ve seen in my life, but he scares the heck out of me sometimes.”

The game was delayed for a lengthy amount of time with just over two minutes two play when a collision between a Stoughton player and Diman’s keeper resulted in an injury. Diman’s goalie was forced to be taken off in an ambulance.

Junior Matt Gallagher nearly made it 3-0 with a minute left, getting his head on a corner from Jordan Asnes, but Diman’s backup keeper did well to stop the chance.

Stoughton will now travel to #2 Greater New Bedford (17-1) on Friday with kickoff set for 6:00.

#19 King Philip, 1 @ #13 Plymouth South, 0 – Final (3OT) – King Philip kept Plymouth South off the board while Casie Curtin and Caitlin Donahue scored to lift the Warriors in a stroke off. KP advances to the D1 South First Round, where they will travel to #4 Franklin on Friday at 2:30.
#21 Attleboro, 3 @ #12 Dighton-Rehoboth, 0 – Final – Attleboro got a hat trick from Emily Houle and Quincy Harding assisted on a pair of them to help the Bombardiers advance. Attleboro will play #5 Dennis-Yarmouth on Friday at 2:30 in the D1 South First Round.

#23 Canton, 1 @ #10 Bridgewater-Raynham, 0 – Final – Lindsey Nolte scored midway through the first half and Taylor Carrington had a strong game in net for the Bulldogs. Canton advances to the D1 South First Round, where they will travel to #7 Norwood (13-4-1) on Friday at 2:30.

Foxboro Storms Back in Second Half At Stoughton

STOUGHTON, Mass. – The pitch was not in great shape, it was cold out, the wind was blowing, and facing an opponent that it had beaten by five goals in the first meeting, Foxboro came out sluggish to start the game against Stoughton on Friday afternoon.

Down by a goal at halftime, first-year coach Joe Franchino stood outside the team huddle and senior captain Robby Lowey led the team talk, imploring the Warriors to step it up in the second half.

The talk worked. Foxboro got into gear in the final 40 minutes and its three attackers, Devante Teixeira, Anthony Barreira, and Joe Morrison, each scored goals to give the Warriors a come from behind 3-1 win that keeps them in the Davenport title race with two league games remaining.

“We’re just trying to find a solution not a problem,” said Franchino about the discussion at halftime. “You can blame the pitch, you can blame a lot of things, but it’s all about finding a solution and getting the victory. The guys pulled it together.”

Stoughton took the lead just six minutes into the game. Noah Schulze, who had only minutes earlier flashed a header narrowly wide, stayed with a loose ball that bounced off of Foxboro keeper Clay Leopold and finished.

“It was a great goal by Noah Schulze,” said Stoughton coach Aaron Salter. “He got a little bit fortunate, but it was still a very good finish to keep battling and not stop.”

The best Foxboro chance of the first half fell to Morrison, but the sophomore midfielder was unlucky to see his shot ricochet off the post after a decisive through ball by freshman Nic Biegel.

Barreira also had two shots saved by Stoughton keeper Kyle Silverman at the half hour mark but overall it was a subdued first half from the Warriors. Teixeira in particular was limited in his touches and impact on the game with left back Jeremy Fishman keeping him under wraps with help from centerback Goddy Frombe.

“I thought first half we did a great job in terms of our shape, our organization, how we wanted to play, how we approached it,” said Salter.

He added, “Nick Comeau, his job was to man-mark Joe in the midfield and he did an awesome job. He was everywhere and he was our hardest working player out there.”

After the break, things changed drastically Teixeira, who had seemed frustrated in the opening 40 minutes, suddenly looked like the player that is leading the league in points. He terrorized he left side of the Stoughton defense and eight minutes after the break he equalized.

Morrison tried to get room on the edge of the box but the ball bounced into the path of Teixeira and he managed to flick it past two defenders and hit it first time into the bottom corner.

“In the first half we had him,” said Salter. “He was getting frustrated, he was getting wound up and in the end it was our undoing because it gave him the fire in the belly to go on and smash it into the net.”

Just a minute later, Teixeira was through again but was denied by Silverman. In the 52nd minute, he go to the byline and cut it back for Hussein Kafel but the sophomore’s shot struck the post and stayed out. Teixeira also had what appeared to be a second goal, but the officials waved it off because the shot had actually gone through the netting outside the post.

In the 69th minute, he forced a mistake and rounded the keeper only to have his chance cleared off the post by Frombe.

“He’s MVP all day long,” said Franchino. “Nobody’s had an answer for him all year. He’s a talented player and he’s carried us in the KP game and he started it off here…that’s what he does.”

Stoughton had a couple of chances in the second half. A long goal kick by Silverman picked out Josh Mitchell up front and his flicked header found Fabio Ponce De Leon but his close-range chance went wide. In the 64th minute, Mitchell sent a header wide from a corner.

The missed opportunities would hurt because Foxboro would take the lead in the 70th minute. Barreira collected the ball near midfield and dribbled at the heart of the Stoughton defense. The Black Knights hesitated and allowed Barreira to line up a shot that slipped inside the post from the edge of the box.

With only five minutes remaining, Morrison wrapped up the two points for Foxboro. He kept possession in the box despite being surrounded, created a foot of space, and smashed his shot into the roof of the net giving Silverman no chance.

“It’s good to see Joe get back on the scoresheet because he does so much in the middle of the park,” said Franchino. “You’re getting double teamed being a top player and then you get unlucky at times…he’s grinding it out.”

Salter did not believe that the final score indicated how his team had played but he added, “Those players show a moment of brilliance each and you’re going to get punished. There’s not much you can do, but I’m truly proud of my boys.”

The win moves Foxboro to within a point of league leading Oliver Ames, which plays on Saturday, with two games remaining. The Warriors will face Sharon on Tuesday.

Stoughton needs three points from its remaining two games to qualify for the postseason. The Black Knights will face Canton on Tuesday night.

Jordan Asnes headed in a cross from Josh Mitchell to cut the deficit in half and then Asnes repaid the favor, connecting with Mitchell on a long throw in to tie the game.

Mansfield, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Victoria Stowell scored both goals for Franklin, both off of long-range free kicks that found the top corner. Rebecca Bornstein went closest for Mansfield with a shot off the bar with two minutes to play.
Stoughton, 2 vs. Norwood, 1 – Final – Emerson Sprague netted the first goal for the Black Knights off an assist from Shanel Ford and Samantha Tullis converted a penalty kick for Stoughton.
Volleyball
Taunton, 3 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – The Tigers qualified for the postseason with the win. Meghan Navarro had 18 service points, including five aces, and seven digs, Emily Moor had 10 kids and five digs and Lexi Natsis played well with 10 assists, 13 service points and a pair of aces.
Oliver Ames, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton picked up the 25-10, 25-15, 26-24. Elizabeth Hamilton led the Bulldogs with eight kills, nine digs and seven aces. Casey Shea had an effective day offensively, hitting .667 with no errors.
Milford, 3 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Milford had to battle back from being down 2-1 to force a game five and took the match 25-16, 20-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-10. Kara Halpin had 13 kills, Jill Powers had eight kills, six digs and two blocks and Allie Collins had 21 assists.
Franklin, 3 @ Mansfield, 1 – Final – Franklin took a close first set and then won games three and four to get the win (27-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22). Dayna McCue had 47 serve receives for the Panthers, adding 22 digs and four aces. Sam Campbell had seven digs and five aces, Alyssa Shea had 10 kills and four digs and Beth Neal had 16 assists, five kills and four aces. For Mansfield, Cathryn Heavey had 36 assists and 16 service points while Meg Hill had 11 kills and six blocks.
North Attleboro, 0 @ King Philip, 3 – Final – King Philip got the sweep 25-11, 25-22, 25-15. The Warriors got strong serving efforts as Emma Lopez had 11 service points in the first game, Liv Balduf had seven service points in game two, Carly Adams had eight service points in game three and Gwen Uyrus had seven service points in game three. Josie Rowean paced the offense with 16 kills while Micaela Murray had nine digs and Amanda Loewen had five digs.

Jordan Asnes converted a penalty to give Stoughton a 1-0 lead. Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter credited Milford goalie Mike Da Silva with some outstanding saves.

Foxboro, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – Francesca Calabraro scored on a pair of headers in the second half, the second assisted by Zoe Chazan, and Kiana Lozzi tacked on a third goal with two minutes to play. Jalisa Allen made 11 saves for the Warriors. Carolyn Will had a free kick tipped over the bar by Regan Benton in the opening minutes of the second half with the game still tied 0-0.
Franklin, 2 @ North Attleboro, 0 – Final – Halle Atkinson and Jess Kroushl scored the goals for Franklin and both were assisted by Alexis Stowell. Head coach Tom Geysen credited his defense for the victory, extending the team’s clean sheet streak to 11 games to start the season.

Franklin, 2 @ Stoughton, 4 – Final – With the game tied 1-1 at halftime, Stoughton found the back of the net three times in the second half to score the win. Loubensky Lucas put the Black Knights up 2-1 on a header off a long throw from Josh Mitchell and then Mitchell made it 3-1 with a shot from 25 yards out. Lucas capped Stoughton’s scoring with a long range shot to make it 4-1. Noah Schulze scored Stoughton’s first half goal off another long throw from Mitchell. Nick Parent and Brian Czuba scored for Franklin.

Mansfield, 0 @ Sharon, 2 – Final – James Dunlea gave the Eagles the lead in the 38th minute off an assist by Ben Stamm. Sharon was able to add an insurance goal in the final minutes when Dunlea set up Jake Goloboy to make it 2-0.

North Attleboro, 2 @ Milford, 4 – Final – Milford erased a deficit on two occasions as Justin Borges recorded a hat trick for the Scarlet Hawks. Marcello Panno had a pair of assists for Milford. Leo Charlebois and Matt Cosacarella scored goals for the Rocketeers and Gabe Pinhancos had a pair of assists.

Taunton, 2 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Taunton picked up a win in the first set before Canton notched two wins. Taunton fought back to force a fifth set but the Bulldogs were able to hold on for a 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 15-9 win. Elizabeth Hamilton paced Canton with 17 kills and 21 digs while head coach Pat Cawley said Olivia Devoe played “outstanding” on defense with 35 digs. Sarah Reissfelder and Rye Verille each added 13 kills while Nicole Poole had 43 assist and 15 digs. Cawley called it a great team effort from the Bulldogs. Tatum Speicher had 34 assists for the Tigers, Molly Sullivan added 20 digs and Meghan Navarro had 24 digs and three aces.

King Philip, 3 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final – King Philip notched a 25-12, 25-12, 29-27 sweep on the road. Josie Rowean led KP with 15 kills, Amelia Murphy and Emma Lopez each added three kills, Micaela Murray had 10 digs and head coach Kristen Geuss said Angela Vellante had a good game defensively.

Franklin, 3 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Dayna McCue had 19 service points, 17 digs and 10 aces to pace Franklin to a 25-15, 25-10, 25-18 sweep on the road. Beth Neal had 12 assists, seven kills, a pair of blocks and an ace and Caroline Maguire added six service points, four kills and three blocks. Stoughton’s Bianca DeSousa had 13 assists, seven digs and five service points.

Taking Stock of the Hock: Boys Soccer 2015

Who is the current soccer Player of the Year?
Lanigan: Foxboro senior Devante Teixeira is off to a great start this season and has been arguably the toughest player to stop. Playing out wide, Teixeira has shown he can straight beat defenders and get to the line for a service or he can cut into the area and create an opportunity that way. He has been the beneficiary of some great work from teammates Anthony Barreira and Joe Morrison, among others, but he has made the most of his opportunities. His mix of speed, skill and vision make him very hard to stop.
Perry: The Foxboro trio of Devante Teixeira, Joe Morrison, and Anthony Barreira deserve recognition as do Brad Eames and Max Gurnon for the solidity of Kelley-Rex leaders Mansfield, but if I had to pick a Player of the Year right now it would be Oliver Ames senior Chris Romero. He isn’t a flashy player with tons of goals, but he is fourth in the league in points with 12 (six goals and six assists), while playing multiple roles for the Tigers from dropping into midfield, playing out on the wing, protecting the back four as a defensive mid and even playing sweeper to protect leads late. Nathanial Cardoza and Keegan Nutt have both had Player of the Year caliber seasons too, but Romero is a coach on the field and the leader of the best team in the Hock.
Who is the soccer Underclassman of the Year?
Lanigan: Sometimes it can be hard to justify a player’s worth if there aren’t stats to back it up, but there’s no question about how good Oliver Ames sophomore Nathaniel Cardoza has been this year. Playing in a center mid role, Cardoza have been a catalyst in the Tigers’ defense as well as the offense. Head coach John Barata has the ability to drop Cardoza a little deeper when OA gets a lead, which pads an already tough defense. Between Cardoza and sophomore midfielders Cam Vella, Matt Campbell and Mason Galbato, the future of OA’s midfield looks very good.
Perry: At the end of last year, I made the case that Joe Morrison deserved mention for the Player of the Year as a freshman and since he came back from an injury a couple games into this season Morrison has just continued his upward trajectory. Morrison is the fulcrum for a Foxboro attack and was sorely missed in Foxboro’s one loss this season. With Morrison in the midfield, the Warriors always have an outlet and someone who can be patient with the ball even under duress, which allows Devante Teixeira and Anthony Barreira to play higher up the pitch and push opposing defenses back with their pace. His ability to break a defense down, makes Foxboro the most dangerous offensive team in the Hock.
What has been the biggest surprise this season?
Lanigan: We had a feeling Foxboro, OA and Mansfield would all have good seasons and so far that is holding up. Meanwhile, the defending four time Kelley-Rex champs Franklin are sitting in a good spot with an 8-3 record. The three losses came in the first five games of the season and two of them to the current division leaders (Mansfield & OA). Unsurprisingly Austin Kent has one of the top players in the league while players like David Stowell, Brian Czuba, Farley Asmath and Kevin Hall have all stepped up to make plays at the right time. Despite graduating 16 seniors last year, the Panthers could be in play for a fifth straight division title.
Perry: Attleboro goalie Tyler Stowe is not a soccer player by trade. He’s much better known for being the ace of the Bombardiers pitching staff during baseball season. But after a real struggle in his opening game of the year against Foxboro, Stowe has emerged as a solid replacement for graduated keeper Jason Ross. Stowe may not be a Best XI choice this year, but it has been one position for Attleboro that started as a question mark and has turned into a strength. Stowe has three clean sheets and has only allowed four goals in 6-1/2 games behind an inexperienced Attleboro back line.

At this point, which team will be going the furthest in the tournament?
Lanigan: I think there are a couple of teams that have a good chance at making runs in the tournament this year. With Franklin, Mansfield and KP in D1, Oliver Ames and Stoughton in D2 and Foxboro in D3, we could see a run from all three divisions. When it comes to the question though, I think Oliver Ames has a good chance of getting back to where they were last year. Don’t be surprised if Foxboro gets further than they did last year and one of the D1 teams makes a run in a talented D1 South field.
Perry: I want to go out on a limb, but in the end the team I think will go the furthest in the tournament is the same team that went the furthest last year – Oliver Ames. The Tigers will have to run a gauntlet in Div. 2 with the usual suspects, including a very good Nauset team, but they are playing like a team that can make another run to the state final. With only one goal allowed this season, OA has the strength in defense and particularly in the midfield to battle just about any team in the state. The Tigers have arguably the most complete starting XI in the league. Maybe we could see a rematch of last year’s final with Concord-Carlisle?
What is your bold prediction for the rest of the season?
Lanigan: I’m going to say that it either be Foxboro scoring 60 goals this season or Oliver Ames allowing six or less goals in the regular season. They might seem like random numbers but the Warriors have 32 goals just over halfway through and I think they can keep that face up in the remaining games. OA has only allowed one goal so far through nine games, and the sun played a big role. I picked six because that’s how many Franklin’s defense allowed last season, which was super impressive. They don’t exactly work together because the two teams have to play each other twice still so we’ll see.
Perry: My bold prediction for the rest of the season is that we end up seeing the same division champions as last year. Franklin is currently only a point behind Mansfield and the Panthers are picking up steam as the season wears on and the new players (which are numerous) get more experience. Franklin has given up only one goal since it lost to Mansfield and the rematch looms large on Oct. 19. OA has been dominant all season, but is only two points better than Foxboro at this stage with two meetings remaining. Don’t be surprised if that final game of the season at Ahern turns into a title decider just as it did last year and the Warriors sneak back into first.
