Thursday’s Schedule & Scoreboard – 05/04/17

Baseball
Stoughton, 6 @ Canton, 3 – Final – For the second straight game, Stoughton rallied from a deficit and plated the game-winning runs in the seventh innings. Jackson Maffeo’s three-run home run put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0 but Stoughton chipped away, tying the game with two runs in the sixth and went ahead with three runs in the seventh. Ryan Sullivan and Jack Connelly each had a single in the sixth and both came around to score to tie the game. Nick Hardy doubled to lead off the top of the seventh, advanced to third and came home on a double from Sullivan. Luke Johnson followed with a two-run double to put Stoughton up 6-3. Justin Hutchinson earned his seventh win of the seven, tossing three hitless innings with seven strikeouts. Hutchinson struck out the side in the sixth and retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Foxboro, 1 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Mansfield’s Colin Gibbons launched a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Hornets a close win over Foxboro. Mansfield took the lead in the bottom of the second when Anthony DeGiolamo (1-for-2) drove in Cullin Anastsia (2-for-3). Foxboro tied the game in the top of the third when Anthony Mollica knocked in John Cronin. Gibbons finished with two hits in the game. Connor Sheehan earned the win in a complete game effort, allowing just four hits while striking out four.

King Philip, 1 @ Sharon, 3 – Final – Sharon junior Max Tarlin tossed a complete game and the Eagles’ offense did all of its damage early to notch a non-league win over KP. Tarlin allows five hits, five walks, one earned run and struck out seven in a complete game effort to earn the win. After Ben Stamm battled for a single, junior Drew Naisuler (2-for-3, double) launched a two-run home run to put the Eagles head. Aiden Arnold (2-for-2) followed that with a triple and scored on a single from Danny Emerman. SHS head coach Kee Arguimbau said senior Jake Marglous played incredible defense at catcher for the Eagles.

Milford, 3 @ Taunton, 1 – Final

Softball
Canton, 4 @ Stoughton, 13 – Final – Nikki Coppola went 4-for-4 with two triples and four runs scored and Karly Estremera went 4-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI to power the Black Knights offense. Gina Carafa had three hits and three RBI and got the win with six innings of work, striking out nine. Shannon Flaherty also had a pair of hits and drove in two for Stoughton. Canton was led offensively by Molly Loughran, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Franklin, 9 @ Foxboro, 1 – Final – Franklin scored three runs in the third and added three more in the sixth inning to beat Foxboro in a game continued from Sunday (rain). Franklin held a 1-0 lead when the game resumed. Olivia DiGiacomo (four RBI) went 3-for-4 and put an exclamation point on the day with a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning. Kylie Bouzan added two hits and scored a pair for runs for Franklin. Jackie Cherry pitched four innings, retiring the side in order in the first, second and third innings. Emily Valentino pitched the last three innings and recorded three strikeouts. FHS head coach Kate Fallon Comeau said Tara Hartnett played excellent defense at shortstop.

King Philip, 3 @ Milford, 6 – Final – Holding a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, Milford tacked on three runs and then held off King Philip’s late comeback attempt. Shannon Cormier went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI, Kaitlin DeCapua had an RBI single, Maddy Bonvino had two hits, including a double, and a run scored and Emily Piergustavo reached base four times and scored one run. Ali Atherton (three strikeouts) earned the win, escaping a pair of jams in both the sixth and seventh innings. King Philip’s Hailey McCasland, Jenn Hutnyan, Jess Bonner and Nicole Carter each had two hits apiece for the Warriors.

Oliver Ames, 0 @ Walpole, 13 – Final – Lexie Campbell had a pair of hits while Victoria Ziner (double), Caroline Mahoney and Katie Mills had recorded one hit for the Tigers.

Taunton, 24 @ New Bedford, 0 – Final (5 Innings) – Taunton booked its place in the state tournament with a dominating win against the Whalers. Courtney Fisher and Jaylin Couto combined on a one-hitter and struck out 11 batters. Kya Enos went 3-for-3 with four RBI and homer, Rebekah Lajoie went 5-for-5 with five RBI and a homerun and eighth grader Hannah Aldrich drove in four for the Tigers. Katie Van Zandt (three RBI) and Alexa White also hit homers for Taunton.

Boys Lacrosse
Canton, 8 @ Mansfield, 10 – Final – Mansfield goalie Sean Powers turned away 12 shots and Sam O’Connell accounted for four points as the Hornets clipped Canton. Tommy Donnelly and Mike Zampine had strong games on defense in front of Powers. O’Connell scored a hat trick and had one assist while Aidan Sacco scored twice and Cullen Murphy, Hunter Ferreira, Joe Cox and Brad Grant each had a goal and an assist. Danny DeGirolamo also scored once for Mansfield.

Boys Tennis
King Philip, 4 @ Canton, 1 – Final – King Philip earned wins at second and third singles and swept doubles play to beat Canton. Martin Matous won 6-3, 6-2 at second singles and Marco DiStefano recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles. The team of Sam Collela and Ryan Gemelli prevailed 6-3, 6-3 at first doubles and Aidan Ignatius and Jake Webster won 6-2, 6-2 at second doubles. Canton junior Jake Wolicki earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles.

Sharon, 4 vs. Bishop Feehan, 1 – Final – Sharon picked up an impressive non-league win, sweeping doubles play and notching two wins in singles play to beat the Shamrocks. The team of senior Alex Romantz and sophomore Danujan Thirumavalavan won 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 at first doubles and Ashwin Sreevatsa and Alberto Olivei won 6-4, 6-3 at second doubles. Fred Bondar notched a 6-3, 6-1 win at second singles and junior Andre Olivei recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win at third singles.

Taunton, 5 @ New Bedford, 0 – Final – Taunton recorded its third straight win with a rout of New Bedford. Sophomore Brett Beaulieu won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, Mike Briggs recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles and Eric Gwordz won 6-0, 6-2 at third singles. The team of Charlie Fiske and Dylan Kullas prevailed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at first doubles and Kyle Dennehy and Alex Pugh won 6-0, 6-3 at second doubles.

Girls Tennis
Stoughton, 0 @ Attleboro, 5 – Final – Attleboro won all three singles matches in straight sets and recorded a sweep of the Black Knights. Torey Lussier won 6-3, 6-1 at first singles, Bri Aronne won 7-5, 6-1 at second singles and Anna Nelson emerged from third singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. The team of Taylor Palermo and Merri Piazza nothched a 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5 win at first doubles and seniors Brooklyn Palermo and Cam Liberatore won 6-0, 6-3 at second doubles.

Canton, 3 @ Milford, 2 – Final – Canton swept doubles play and earned a win at third singles to edge Milford on the road. Kiki Karavas won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at third singles to help the Bulldogs clinch the match. The team of Julia Burkowsky and Jena Moyle won 7-5, 6-2 and Stelina Michaelidis and Sarah Hernandez won 6-1, 7-5 at second doubles. Milford’s Julie Rabinowitz won 7-5, 6-1 at first singles and Allison Buckenmaier won 6-2, 6-2 at second singles.

Taunton, 5 vs. New Bedford, 0 – Final – Taunton lost just three games in doubles play in a big win over the Whalers. The team of Emily Moor and Ashleigh Eason won without a blemish, picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at first doubles. Callie Hebert and Jordan Martin recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win at second doubles. In singles play, Olivia Sweeney (first) won 6-1, 6-0, Jordan Pagliuca (second) won 6-3, 6-1 and Jillian Pagliuca (third) won 6-3, 6-2.

Boys Track
Milford, 78 @ Canton, 58 – Final – Canton’s Muhammed Sambo and Cordell Smith each qualified for states but the Bulldogs fell to Milford. Sambo came in first in the 200M at 23.1 while Smith finished first in the high jump (5’10). Gerry Sullivan also came in first for the Bulldogs, clocking in at 2:11.9 in the 800M. Canton swept the 400M hurdles with John Guenthner coming in first (1:01.1), Matt Floyd (1:03.6) coming in second and Riley McDonnell (1:04.00) taking third.

Girls Track
Milford, 78 @ Canton, 58 – Final – Canton’s Bronwyn Mahoney and Sarah Collins each won a pair of events but Milford prevailed with a win. Mahoney took first in the shot put (29’6.5″) and discus (68’8″) and Collins won the 400M hurdles (71.5) and the 800M (2:34.5). Andrea McNeil was first in the one mile (5:57.4) and second in the 800M (2:37.3) and Jimisha Williams crossed first in the 200M (28.0).

Norton’s Last Minute Third Period Goal Sinks Foxboro

FOXBORO, Mass. – In their third head-to-head matchup of the young season, the Norton Lancers took down the Foxboro Warriors, 5-4, thanks to two third period goals in an eventful night at the Foxboro Sports Center.

“[Norton] just played better in front of our net,” said Foxboro coach Mark Cedorchuk. “We’ve got to do a better job defensively picking guys up.”

The Warriors broke open the scoring with 11:44 left in the first period as Kyle McGinnis was fed by his teammate to put a shot past Norton’s Triton DosReis, giving Foxboro the early lead.

That lead, however, only stood for 50 seconds as a hard slap shot down the left wing from Lancer captain Cam Trudeau found the back of the net, drawing even with 10:55 left to play in the period.

The rest of the period consisted of hard hits and chances, particularly for Norton as the Lancers continued to press offensively while Foxboro created chances when possible.

The Warriors killed two power play opportunities for the Lancers. Despite chances, Norton was unable to take the lead and headed into the first intermission even with Foxboro.

The second period got underway with both sides exchanging shots. While the attacks looked strong, John Cronin and DosReis were stronger in their respective nets, stopping shot after shot that came at them.

Norton broke through again though with 9:21 remaining in the period as Tom Whalen slid in from the right to knock the puck past Cronin and give the Lancers the 2-1 lead.

Foxboro had a power play opportunity with 9:16 remaining in the period after Brendan Heayden was sent to the penalty box. While they were unable to capitalize on the power play, the Warriors found the back of the net shortly after, as Sam Garrabrant took advantage of the rebound to bring Foxboro back even with 7:09 remaining in the period.

Both teams continued their hard-hitting along the boards, but a scary moment happened with 5:00 left when a late hit hit prompted a scuffle, resulting in a game misconduct for a player on each team.

The referees decided to hold off the action until tensions had cooled and the injury was tended to, calling the second intermission early, with the remainder of the second period to be played after the break.

When the action resumed, Norton struck back to take the lead as Jack Lornager took a rebound off Cronin’s pads & shot it up over the diving goaltender to make it 3-2 with 2:35 left in the period.

While the Lancers looked to carry their lead into the third period, the Warriors had other ideas as Mike Carresi and Josh Bertumen set up John Brolin on the blue line, and the senior defenseman delivered, sending a hard shot into the left side of net with 0:22 left in the period.

With the third period getting right underway, it was still anyone’s game as both sides remained even both on the board and on the ice. Caressi gave the Warriors the lead with 14:04 left as Bertumen and Smith helped set him up for a shot in front of goal, but the Lancers struck back with 12:35 left as Tom Whalen was fed from behind the goal & slid one to the left of Cronin’s blocker to draw the game even yet again.

As the period went on, Norton continued to carry momentum. Foxboro was able to counter this defensively by breaking up several breakaways, but Loranger sent the game winner past Cronin in front of a crowded net with 0:24 left, sealing the deal for the Lancers.

Both teams return to action January 4th, when Foxboro (1-4) plays host to the Pope John Paul II (Barnstable) Lions, while Norton will challenge the Durfee Hilltoppers.

“We need another Division 3 win,” said Cedorchuk. “We have five Division 3 games left and we need four [wins] to get into the playoffs… We just need to play better defensively in front of our own net.”

Canton

2015-2016 Record: 16-3-4

Throughout the years, Canton has had plenty of skillful goal scorers that pace the offense. Heading into this season, it’s still to be determined who will emerge as Canton’s top offensive threat.

The Bulldogs lost a lot of scoring from a year ago, including the team’s top for scorers – Matt Lazaro, Jim Jenkins, Bobby Mullaney and Seamus Pecararo – who combined for over 100 points. However, the Bulldogs have one of the strongest programs from top to bottom in the area and it will be the next man up. Senior Tommy Kilduff (nine points) and junior Jack Goyetch (12 poitns) are likely candidates to be top offensive weapons on their respective lines.

One area that Canton is rock solid is defense. The Bulldogs are bringing back their top four defensemen from a year ago, including HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Jackson Maffeo and HockomockSports Third Team selection CJ Martin. Those two will be joined once again by DJ Trerice and Brad Murphy, giving Canton a solid foundation to work off of.

Juniors Quinn Gibbs and Niko Donovan are set to compete for the starting job vacated by Justin Slocum.

“Overall, we expect to be a scrappy team with no real superstars, but a good balance of gritty forwards, experienced defensemen, and deep goaltending hopefully will allow us to compete with the top teams in the Hockomock League,” Canton head coach Brian Shuman said.

Foxboro

2015-2016 Record: 5-14-1

With a strong blend of experienced players and young talent, first year head coach Mark Cedorchuk is hopeful the Warriors can find their way back to the state tournament.

The Warriors return both of their top scoring threats from a year ago with seniors Mike Carresi (seven goals, 10 assists) and Peter Smith (10 goals, six assists) both back to pace the offense, as well as classmate Paul Vey. Junior Aidan Sullivan is back after an impressive sophomore season (eight points) and will be a big presence along the blue line along with classmate Taylor Sharfman and senior John Brolin.

It will be a familiar face between the pipes for Foxboro again this season as John Cronin returns as one of the top netminders in the league.

“With this core group of excellent upperclassman and talented underclassman we’re very excited about our season this year,” Cedorchuk said. “With the roster we have we’re looking to compete at a very high level and can’t wait for our season to start.”

North Attleboro

2015-2016 Record: 13-5-4

Between a strong returning core of players and a switch to the Davenport division, 2016-2017 could be the year the Rocketeers make a serious run at a league title. Standing in the way will be Canton.

Five of the Rocketeers’ leading scorers are back this year, including top goal scorer Erik Clements (13 goals, 10 assists) and top assist man and HockomockSports.com First Team selection Zach McGowan (12 goals, 12 assists). Juniors Jason McNeany (eight goals, 12 assists), Andrew Wissler (nine goals, nine assists) and Hunter Sarro (nine goals, four assists) are all back as well with varsity experience. The depth in North Attleboro’s attack will make them tough to deal with.

Defensively, it all starts with sophomore goalie Ryan Warren, who had a terrific freshman year and was named HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year. In front of him, senior Vincent Zammiello – a HockomockSports.com Third Team selection – and sophomore Brendan McHugh will anchor the defensive unit.

“In order for our team to be successful, we need to stick to our style of hockey and be well positioned and physical,” North Attleboro head coach Steve Snizek said. “We also need to take advantage of power power play opportunities while staying disciplined.”

Stoughton

2015-2016 Record: 6-12-3
2015-2016 Finish: Missed playoffs

Stoughton returns a good handful of experienced varsity players from last year’s squad, but will still be one of the youngest teams in the league.

Senior forwards Jon Lessa and Nick Hardy are two of the more experienced players on the team. Lessa was second in scoring a year ago with nine goals and also added six assists while Hardy chipped in with seven points. Sophomore Sean Doherty will likely see a lot of ice time this season after an impressive freshman season. Doherty had seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points – second most on the team.

On defense, senior Cam Doherty will anchor the blue line while sophomore Josh Hough will look to build upon a strong rookie campaign a year ago. Sophomore AJ Scott is back in goal this season after making over 600 saves as a freshman. Having a year of varsity experience will be vital for a handful of Stoughton’s returning players.

“We are young team that will improve as the season goes on,” Stoughton head coach Dan Mark said.

Ashlyn Gaulin made it 3-0 on an assist from Felicity Monfils while Leah Jette capped the score at 4-0.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ Brockton, 0 – Final – Kiana Lozzi set up Tori Wyman for the game-winning goal in the second half to lift OA to its 14th win on the season. Regan Benton had a strong game in goal for the shutout for OA.

Attleboro, 3 vs. Norton, 0 – Final

Canton, 0 @ Notre Dame Academy, 3 – Final – The Canton Bulldogs gave the defending State Champions a run for their money but ultimately fell 21-25, 18-25, 21-25. “They were definitely the hardest hitters we’ve seen this year,” head coach Pat Cawley said of the undefeated Cougars. Erika Lum played good defense leading Canton with 16 digs (along with three kills) and Julia Panico added 11 digs. Cawley had high praise for setter Nicole Poole – “she was awesome, making something out everything no matter where the pass.” – finishing with 18 assists and two kills. Casey Shea had a big night on offense with seven kills and no errors and added four blocks while Emma Murphy had three blocks and three kills.

Franklin, 3 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Franklin middles Meaghan Maguire and Maggie Doyle “were dominant at the net” according to Panther head coach Kate Horsmann. Maguire registered a pair of kills and five blocks while Doyle had two aces and three blocks. Erin Skidmore had four aces, 16 service points, eight kills and four digs for the Panthers while Ellie Wisniewski chipped in with five kills and Maddie Kuzio had 18 digs and an ace.

Field Hockey
Attleboro, 0 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final

Franklin, 2 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Franklin senior Dana Lewandowski netted what turned out to be the game winner just five minutes into the first half as the Panthers picked up their seventh win of the season. Sophomore Annie Walsh scored with just under three minutes remaining to ice the game for Franklin. Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said Kate Morse “did an outstanding job in the midfield” for the Panthers.

Stoughton, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Franklin built a two goal lead in the first half but the Black Knights stormed back with three unanswered goals to grab the win. Farley Asmath and Nitin Chaudury netted goals off assists from Liam Kapples to put the hosts up 2-0. Stoughton answered as Noah Schulze scored on a free kick from 30 yards out and then tied the game before the break on Tyler Melo’s strike from outside the area. The Black Knights netted the game-winner with Melo finishing off a cross from Jordan Asnes. Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter said, “It was an excellent team performance today from every player.” Salter had specific praise for his back line as well as Melo and junior Brian Peoples.

Attleboro, 0 @ Milford, 1 – Final – Milford senior Sydney Morrison netted the lone goal of the game off an assist from Kristen Franzini to help the Scarlet Hawks edge Attleboro. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj said Maggie Boyle and Ashleigh Starks both played well for the Scarlet Hawks.

Mansfield, 2 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final – Hannah Reiter scored both goals for the Hornets, including the winner on a header off an Emily Vigeant corner with eight minutes remaining. Hannah Jerrier had a 10 kills with no errors, hitting an impressive .435. Casey Shea added seven kills with just one error, hitting .545. Julia Panico was “outstanding” in the back row according to Cawley, finishing with 20 digs. Erika Lum, Maria Mackie and Emily Lynch combined for 33 digs for the Bulldogs.

Canton

Outlook: After falling victim to the playoff system’s alignment and just missing out on a postseason berth, Canton will be relying on a mix of experience and youth to try and get back to the state tournament under the new alignment.

Davenport division MVP and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Jake Ragusa is off playing at Merrimack so that will be a major void for Canton to fill. However, the Bulldogs do return some players in key spots that will help them out of the gates. Senior Anthony Ross is back under center and could see an expanded role in 2016. Dan Alice is back after suffering an injury last season and should lead a stable of running backs, led by fullback Alec Ragusa. Joe Mulkay, Dan Pierre, Tony Harris and Mike Marino should all factor into the offense as well for Canton.

Defensively, Canton has some experience on the line in Brian Smith, who also plays as a tackle on offense, as well as Mark Whalen, who saw valuable minutes last year, and Ben Paolillo. Alec Ragusa will be the anchor in the linebacking corps alongside Thomas Monagle (also the team’s kicker) and Marino. Harris, Alice and Mulkay figure to be important pieces in the Bulldogs’ secondary this year.

“The kids have a strong work ethic and had a good offseason and now a good preseason,” head coach Dave Bohane said. “I think we’ll be strong up front on both sides and we have kids in key spots with experience.”

Foxboro

Outlook: Coming off the program’s first league title since 2010, the Foxboro Warriors are hoping to stay near the top of the Davenport division again this year. And with one of the top returning quarterbacks in Mark Clagg under center for another year, the Warriors will likely be in the thick of the division race.

Clagg threw for nine touchdowns last season, third most among returning quarterbacks. After splitting some time with Darren Kelly last year, it looks like it was be Clagg’s spot full time in 2016. Another positive for having Clagg back is the experienced wide receivers he will have to work with. Jamaine Few is a big, experienced target at 6’3 and will be a tough one on one matchup for defensive backs. Trey Guerrini also has experience with Clagg while Phil Dure and John Whitehouse could be viable options as well. Foxboro will have to fill the void at running back, after the stability of Ronnie Martin and Keeyon Neal in previous years. Eseosa Omuemu, Matt Mullally and Anthony Capachietti are all possible choices to start in the backfield.

Defensively, the Warriors will rely upon experience in the linebacking and defensive back corps. Junior Matt Pond and senior Brandon Corey will be key cogs among the linebackers while Paul Darcy and Guerrini will be key pieces in the Warriors’ secondary. Foxboro will look to develop solid options on both the offensive and defensive lines.

“As always, the senior leadership plays a key role in the success of the 2016 campaign,” head coach Jack Martinelli said.

Milford

Outlook: The Scarlet Hawks have posted back-to-back 7-4 seasons and are hoping to continue their winning ways in 2016. With 11 starters returning, Milford is on the right track to do so.

It all starts with Yale-commit Blake Hill, who will be a top player on both offense and defense this season. Offensively he can hurt you in many ways, including running with the ball or catching passes. Hill will have some space to run thanks to an experienced offensive line that includes Riley Burns, Ryan Gray and Pat Brogioli. Junior Matt Curran will take over under center for the Scarlet Hawks and will have Jack Cappelletti, Tony Mobilia and Tyler Joyce as pass catching options to work with.

Defensively, Hill is one of the top linebackers in the league. He’ll be flanked by Harrison Bliss, Asong Aminmentse and Joyce. Burns, Gray and Brogioli will all be two-way linemen for the Scarlet Hawks. Shapel Feaster, who will also see touches on offense, will be in the secondary along with Alec Salamone, Mobilia and Cappelletti.

North Attleboro

Key/Returning Players: Thomas Reynolds, Sr., OL/DL; Bobby Mylod, Sr., RB/LB; Nick Rajotte, Sr. RB/DB; Kyle McCarthy, Sr. QB/DB; Chad Peterson, Jr., QB; Thomas Kummer, Sr., OL/DL.

Outlook: As with any defending league champion, the North Attleboro Rocketeers will have some holes they’ll have to fill this year. But Big Red also has a slew of talented, experienced players back as North Attleboro looks to make a splash in its first season in the Davenport division.

Junior Chad Peterson is back under center after a breakout sophomore season in which he tossed 13 touchdowns, second most in the Hockomock League. While Kelley-Rex MVP Nick Morrison has graduated, North Attleboro returns Bobby Mylod and Nick Rajotte, who will give the Rocketeers a variety of attacking options. Thomas Reynolds will anchor the offensive line from the center position while Peterson will look for Hacmoni Cuevas, David Engler, Mario Bresko and Nick Dean to emerge as receiving threats.

It will be a lot of the same faces making plays on the defensive side of the ball. Reynolds and senior Tom Kummer are two major pieces and will take up the center of the defensive line. Mylod emerged as one of the top linebackers in the Hockomock and in the state last season and will be complemented at the position by Ryan Kingston, Zach DeMattio and Cuevas. Rajotte and Kyle McCarthy both had solid years in the secondary last season and will be big pieces to the defensive puzzle again this season.

“It’s going to be an interesting year switching to the Davenport division,” head coach Don Johnson said. “It certainly isn’t going to be any easier.”

Sharon

2015 Record: 4-7
2015 Finish: Reached D3 Southeast Quarterfinal

Outlook: A lot of the players listed as key and returning players for Sharon this season were also on last year’s list, and that’s a good thing for the Eagles, who are looking to take the next step forward in 2016.

Junior Drew Naisuler will step into the starting role at quarterback and will have some weapons at his disposal right away. Running back Juvan Elisma had a stellar 2015 campaign as a junior, rushing for eight touchdowns – tied for fourth most in the Hockomock League and tied for second in the Davenport. Now Elisma will look to cap a strong football career at Sharon by leading an Eagles’ rushing attack that will likely include junior Sam Spencer as well. Naisuler will have an experienced receiver as Josh Rotman is back for another year while junior Austin Dodes figures to be another target this season.

“Our season will be decided by how physical we can be and if our new varsity players can step up and make an impact,” head coach Dave Morse said.

The Eagles will also bring back some experience on both sides of the line. Nate Hirsh has been a key cog of the line on both sides of the ball for the Eagles. Ian Langol-Leonard and Wilhelm Bolt also will likely be key experience pieces up front for Sharon. Defensively, Rotman also is back as a talented defensive back. Xavier Hackett is another name to keep an eye on, as the senior has been able to make plays for Sharon in the past and looks to do more of the same in 2016.

Stoughton

Outlook: No matter what team, it’s always going to be difficult to replace a three year starter at quarterback. But with the talented offensive line Stoughton has back this season and senior Dave Cellucci taking over under center, the Black Knights’ offense is in good shape.

The offensive line returns starters Lino Azul, Ryan Pierre and Andrew Iverson while Harry Kimball and Brendan Walsh – who both started on the defensive line – will play on both sides of the ball now. That experience will help give Cellucci a little more time in the pocket when he’s called upon to throw. Meanwhile, Ryan Sullivan, Izon Swain-Price and Justin Ly all figure to be key pieces in the backfield. Sullivan and Swain-Price caused havoc for defenses last season with a combined 10 rushing touchdowns. Swain-Price will also be a receiving option while Jack Connelly is back for another year at tight end.

Stoughton will look to continue its tradition of having a staunch defense. The Black Knights have depth on the defensive line with Pierre, Azul and Kimball all seeing time there along with junior Jason Joseph. Iverson, Ly and Connelly will all see reps at linebacker and Sullivan and Izon Swain-Price will likely be two of the top defensive backs in the entire league.

“We hope to stay healthy and get into the playoffs,” head coach Greg Burke said. “This has been a great group in the weight room and conditioning, that will have to carry us in the league. We know it will be a tough league this year.”

Foxboro Clinches Playoff Berth With Upset of Dedham

FOXBORO, Mass. – The rain had picked up on Friday afternoon, as Foxboro took the field for the top of the seventh inning trying to hold onto a three-run lead against Dedham, which was ranked No. 15 in the state by one publication.

Warriors starter Aaron Wentling was back on the hill to try and finish off a complete game. The first batter lined out to center, but the second hitter’s line drive to short was dropped and then stole second. Matt Dunn singled to center to plate the Marauders’ fifth run.

Dunn moved to second on a wild pitch but with the tying run at the plate, Wentling reared back and picked up his eighth strikeout to put the Warriors one out from the postseason. He walked Dedham lead-off hitter Jack Powers, but came right back with his final strikeout of the night to end it and give the Foxboro program a moment of celebration.

“You kind of wait for that day in the season when your team puts it together,” said Foxboro coach Chris Sullivan, who had to pause in his interview to be doused with water by his players.

“A lot of these guys have worked for years, a lot of the guys have been on the varsity team since they were freshmen and sophomores…this is the culmination of all that work to beat a really good team and get into the playoffs at the same time.”

Wentling has been the team’s ace since an early season injury to Justin Garcia. In fact, Foxboro is dealing with injuries to a number of its starters, but in the pressure moment Sullivan knew that he could count on the junior.

“He’s made some, 15-20, big, big pitches in big spots this year,” said Sullivan. “I think he’s got four of our six wins this year.

“That last pitch – that kid is hitting. 500 and is one of the best hitters in the Bay State Conference and he throws one of his best splitters of the day.”

He struck out the side in the second inning, during a stretch of four strikeouts in five hitters, but the Marauders jumped in front in the third with an unearned run. Foxboro responded in the bottom of the inning and took control.

Ethan Butt led-off with a single to left off Dedham starter Jason Leonard. A.J. Bubencik followed with a grounder to second and the attempt to get the lead runner was late to put two on with no outs. Lead-off hitter Nick Wright singled in the tying run with a shot to right, starting a string of three straight hitters with an RBI.


Jesse Galanti lined out to right and Bubencik came in to score on the sac fly when the ball skipped through the catcher’s legs. Darren Kelly drove in his first run of the night with another sac fly to empty the bases and make it 3-1.

A.J. Cavossa continued the inning with a two-out triple to center and Wentling helped his own cause with an RBI double (after the centerfielder slipped on the wet turf). Chad Bearce made it two doubles in a row with a shot to the gap, scoring pinch runner Alex DuBrow and giving Foxboro a 5-1 advantage.

Wentling allowed a single and hit a batter to start the fourth, but his defense helped him keep away from a big inning. First Cam Feldman made a sliding catch in the right-center gap for the first out and, after a single by Jack Powers brought in one run and a pop up to second brought the second out, Bubencik ended the inning with a great diving catch down the leftfield line.

“Those are two of the hardest workers on the team and it shows,” said Sullivan. “Those are, I call them the 50-50 plays, where a good player makes them and an average player doesn’t. We weren’t making those in the beginning of the season.”

Dedham got one back in the fourth, but Foxboro tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom half. With two outs Wright had an infield single to the second baseman and stole second. Galanti walked and then Kelly lined a double just out of the reach of the centerfielder to bring in both runners and provide the eventual winning runs.

“I still can’t figure out how he hits like he does,” said Sullivan with a laugh about Kelly, who is one of the team leaders at the plate. “That’s what we’ve not done in years past is get that extra little insurance run and we’re starting to get that now.”

The Marauders got one in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the lead to three heading to the seventh. Wentling stuck with it, despite another unearned run, and was able to pull out the win for the Warriors and, with a game against Carver to spare, clinched Foxboro’s spot in the playoffs.

“Now we can spend the next two weeks getting healthy and getting lined up for the tournament,” said Sullivan, who joked that the Warriors had not won two games in a row in a couple of seasons.

“These guys deserve all the credit in the world. They’ve worked hard everyday, met challenges every day. We’re at that point where we’re playing with that confidence and we know we can go out and take a game now.”

Foxboro (6-8, 4-7) will travel to Stoughton on Monday afternoon.

CANTON

2015 Record: 11-11
2015 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round
Coach: JP Scott

The Bulldogs graduated a handful of key pieces from last year’s team that reached the playoffs but they also return plenty of experienced players and hope to reach the playoffs again.

“The expectation for us is to have a successful season and make a run for a small Hock title,” Canton head coach JP Scott said. “But our main goal of the season will be to make it back to the state tournament like we did in 2015.”

Canton has 11 seniors on the roster this season led by captains Griffin Jerrier and Joe Peccia. Jerrier has plenty of experience on the bump while Peccia was second on the team last year with a .393 batting average. The Bulldogs also have their top batter back in Kevin Powers, who batted over .400 last year and drove in 15 runs in the season. Powers was also one of Canton’s top pitchers after logging over 40 innings in 2015.

Scott also brings back Jim Jenkins, Mike McMahon, Sean Doyle and Joe Bires, all which have starting experience. Junior Jackson Maffeo, fresh off a tremendous season on the ice, is expected to contribute in his first season on varsity.

FOXBORO

2015 Record: 4-16
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs

After just four wins last year, the Warriors look poised to improve on that this year. Foxboro graduated just two seniors year last and have seven starters back for 2016.

“This is the hardest working and most dedicated group that has come through the school since I graduated in 2002,” head coach Chris Sullivan said. “We have a ton of guys who worked hard in the weight room, in the cages, and by playing competitive summer baseball this past offseason.”

Justin Garcia will lead a strong group of experienced pitchers. Garcia had a 1.54 ERA last season, striking out nearly 50 batters to rank near the top of the league. Colin Thoener, Darren Kelly and Aaron Wentling will also all see time on the mound this season.

Chad Bearce will likely handle first base while Garcia is on the mound while Darren Kelly and John Cronin will see time up the middle. Thoener will show off his defensive prowess at third and senior Nick Wright will return for his third season patrolling centerfield for Foxboro. AJ Cavossa, AJ Bubencik and Cam Feldman will all split the other outfield time and Jesse Galanti is back behind the plate for the third consecutive season.

MILFORD

2015 Record: 11-10
2015 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round

After just getting into the postseason last year, Milford has key pieces back in key positions to try and keep their playoff streak alive.

“This team is a very athletic team with lots of versatility,” head coach Paul Pellegrini said. “If we put everything together, which I believe we will, we should be fun to watch. We will definitely be very competitive and strong team all around.”

One big reason that Milford has a shot at getting back there is sophomore Aidan Wilde, who led the league as a freshman in batting last year. He hit had 36 hits and hit .537 with 21 RBI and was selected as the HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year. Junior Blake Hill has batted .360 over the past two years and will also be a key part of the Scarlet Hawks pitching staff.

Junior Alex Macek will be one of the more experienced pitchers in the Davenport and will be relied upon as Milford tries to replace Griffin Lynch and Alex Croteau. Brian Ireland, who also is the starting third baseman, will also get innings for Milford this season.

OLIVER AMES

2016 Record: 15-7
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South Quarterfinal

Losing arguably the two top players in the league will be tough for Oliver Ames but the Tigers have been the class of the league in recent years and have reloaded year after year.

Oliver Ames has won six straight league titles but this season might be the biggest challenge. Hockomock MVP and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Brendan Welch is off at SNHU now and Mike Ferrara, who set the single season hit record for the Tigers, is out at Worcester State.

However, Leo Duggan has infielder Chris Romero back to lead OA after batting .474 last year, good for fourth in the league. Romero gets it done at the plate, in the field and on the bases – stealing 18 bases last year. Romero will be joined by Josh Minuskin, who saw time all over the field last year and will settle in behind the plate in 2016.

Ryan Adams will be another key piece, playing in 18 games last year and batting .404 with 10 RBI. Sophomore Matt Muir also returns after a standout freshman year. Sam Burr, Kevin Geary, Mitchell Goulet and Nick Zwerle should all see some innings on the mound this season.

Sharon

2015 Record: 6-14
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Kee Arguimbau

For the first time in nearly a half a century, there will be a new head coach for the Sharon Eagles baseball team. After 44 years at the helm, Joel Peckham retired after last season and assistant Kee Arguimbau has taken the reigns.

Senior Isaac Miley will be a leader that Arguimbau will rely on all over the place. He’s been on varsity since his sophomore year and is returns as the starting shortstop this season and will be one of the program’s top pitchers.

Senior Mark Botaish will also see a lot of time on the mound and will man third base when he’s not pitching. Arguimbau noted Botaish’s strong junior season and is hoping that will be built on this year. Andrew Filipkowski is back in the outfield for his third season and will be relied upon to get the offense started from the leadoff spot.

Junior Jake Marglous is back at catcher again this season and classmate Aiden Arnold is back to man first base. Arnold was also one of the Eagles’ top hitters last season and will help pace the offense this year. Arguimbau also expect contributions from Rob Bayha, Mike Dumont, Jordan Chabot, Ryan Crooks and Spencer Singer.

Stoughton

2015 Record: 9-11
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Mike Armour

The Black Knights came up just short of the postseason last year but return a strong core and are poised to punch their ticket to the playoffs in 2016.

“With a mix of experience and youth, we are looking to field a competitive team this season that should be able to compete with anybody,” head coach Mike Armour said.

Jake Gibbs has been one of the top players in the league the last two seasons and will look to do the same during his senior year behind the plate. Junior Ryan Sullivan showed a lot on the mound last season and will see a lot of innings along with juniors Justin Hutchinson and Nico Parmeggiani and senior Barry Cooke.

Armour is looking for Doug Seaman to take on an expanded role during his senior season after being limited to just hitting last season. Junior Jack Connelly will man first base for the Black Knights while Joe Piana will see time at third base. Expect Chris McNulty, Nick Quattrucci, Matt Gallagher, Luke Johnson, Michael Batte to all see time in the field while Jared Maher will log some innings on the mound.
