Teams of the Decade #11: 2013 Milford Softball

Coming off a perfect season and a state championship the previous spring, the 2013 Milford softball team faced a new set of challenges. Not only were the Hawks facing the difficult task of trying to repeat while having a giant target on their backs, but were also trying to navigate the unfamiliar waters of the Hockomock League and the South sectional.

Led by its five seniors, Milford lived up to its preseason hype. Refocused by a midseason loss that ended their win streak at 35 games, the Hawks closed the season with 16 straight wins and sealed back-to-back titles with a 1-0 win over Amherst in the state title game.

“These seniors really from freshman year on, to see their growth not only as players but leaders and girls that set an atmosphere, set an expectation that others were going to follow,” said then head coach Brian Macchi about his senior class. “From losing a state championship game to losing a state semifinal to finally winning it and then wanting to go out and do it again, they weren’t going to settle for anything less.”

Once a team has reached the pinnacle and lifted the state championship trophy, it can be hard to come back the next season with the same focus and determination, but the Hawks faced a new challenge in 2013 that kept them motivated. That spring was Milford’s first in the Hockomock League.

Macchi explained, “It made it easy for me as a coach to motivate because you had that storyline of entering a new conference and the league we’re entering is the league you want to be in when you’re talking about softball in Massachusetts.”

Shannon Smith, the team’s standout senior pitcher, added, “We were just trying to take things one day at a time and one moment at a time because there was a lot of hype. There was a lot of new stuff, entering a new conference, but with a lot of the same girls we felt like we could do some good things again.”

Having Smith in the circle certainly gave the Hawks an edge, no matter what league they were playing in. The three-time Gatorade Player of the Year set a new state record for strikeouts that season, recording the 1,120th strikeout of her career in the next to last game of the regular season and ending with 1,216 for her career. She finished with 358 strikeouts that season and an ERA of 0.04. That is not a typo.

“She just exemplifies everything you want in a player and a teammate,” said Sam Bonvino, a junior first baseman on the 2013 team. “She was the first to cheer you on, always the first to make you happy and lift up the spirits of the team, and she was always the first to buckle down and get us back on track. When she stepped on that mound and she was ready to pitch, it all just fell into place. It was incredible to watch her drive and her passion.”

Macchi added, “To have a player like that and a pitcher like that you know going into every game, no matter who you’re playing, you’ve got a chance to win. That is an outstanding feeling to have.”

The Hawks were rolling at the start of the season, winning their first 10 games, but the dream of a second straight perfect season came to an end with a visit from North Attleboro. Despite a 17-strikeout, one-hitter from Smith, the Rocketeers were able to scratch out a run in the 10th inning and throw out a runner at the plate in the bottom half of the inning to escape to pull out a 1-0 win.

“I think it was a big reminder that it’s not going to be all sunshine and rainbow but we have to put in the work,” said Smith. Bonvino noted, “I think that loss was kind of like a wake up call. We were devastated because it would’ve been pretty cool to go back-to-back undefeated but it showed to us that we can lose, we can bounce back, and pick right up where we left off.”

Macchi said that the team started the next day’s practice with a talk about the loss and how to move forward. Whatever was said in that conversation worked, as Milford softball won 10 straight to head into the playoffs as the second seed. That set up a quarterfinal with King Philip, a rematch of the 2010 state title game and a matchup between the teams that had won the last three state titles.

“The KP games, every time, no matter if it was the regular season, the playoffs, state title game, the atmosphere and the competitiveness between both teams was outstanding,” said Macchi. “It was just so fun to be a part of, and the girls absolutely loved it.”

It was a pitcher’s duel between Smith and KP’s Anna O’Neill and, fittingly for two of the top programs in the state, the game went into extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth, Lauren Hanna bunted for a single and Smith followed with a hit. A wild pitch moved the runners up and KP intentionally walked cleanup hitter Caroline Fairbanks. Senior Rachel Levine singled to left center setting off a wild celebration that included Macchi charging out to second base to lift up Levine.

“We were both so into it and it was like a state title game because we both had a lot riding on that game, not just the loss or the win but proving to each other that we’re really good teams,” said Bonvino.

Milford softball completed its run through the South by outsourcing Franklin and Bridgewater-Raynham 13-0. “Realizing the names and the teams that were in that bracket was a huge accomplishment but at the same time this group wasn’t ready to settle,” Macchi said. “That was more motivation to finish it off and finish up those last two games the way they wanted to.”

For the second year in a row, the Hawks needed only one run to seal the state title. Smith struck out 13, finishing her career with another shutout. She said, “You want the ball in those situations. A lot of pitchers who are competitive would love that situation. Just go for it and do whatever you can to win.”

With all the attention on the upperclassmen, it was freshman Jill Powers that provided the decisive hit, driving in sophomore Allie Piergustavo with a two-out double in the sixth inning. Smith struck out the side in the seventh and Milford softball was back on top.

“It’s very fulfilling because you see people practice year round and not get to that final game and not fully get to see what it’s made of,” said Bonvino. “To be able to do it twice and be able to feel the love and the gratitude and how amazing it is to be back there again, even just to stand on the field at the end and think about the games you’ve played to get to that point is really cool.”

Macchi said, “Getting to that day and winning that game, the smiles on their faces, it was just an outstanding feeling for me as a coach and something I’ll never forget. They had that moment realizing that, as they were running out to get the state championship trophy, the story for them in their high school careers was ending on such an unbelievable high.”

Milford Breaks Out of ‘Lull,’ Hands Taunton First Loss

MILFORD, Mass. – In the middle of the season, Milford went through a rough patch, what head coach Steve DiVitto labeled a “lull.” The Hawks followed up a big win against defending state champion St. Peter Marian with a loss to North Attleboro. They beat Sharon but then were beaten 12-0 by King Philip. A win against Foxboro was was followed by a loss to Franklin.

At the beginning of last week, DiVitto spoke to his team and told them it was time to get past the “Dog Days” of the schedule and start ramping up to be ready to go in the tournament.

In front of a huge crowd and with an intensity that felt more like June than the middle of May the Hawks responded on Sunday afternoon with a 7-3 victory over previously undefeated Taunton in a battle of Hockomock League champions.

“We wanted to play a complete game and we knew it would take a complete game to beat them,” said DiVitto. “We wanted to come out and play our brand of softball and compete…and we were fortunate enough to come out on top.

“We said today was a great test to come out and see where we are at and we’re happy with the result.”

Taunton took the lead in its first at-bat. Jordan Wade reached on a fielder’s choice with one out and moved up to second on a groundout. Fellow five-year starter Meghan Navarro provided the big hit with a single to center that brought home the opening run.

While Milford entered the game having scored 171 runs, the Tigers had only allowed nine all season. So, an early one-run deficit felt like a lot more to the Hawks.

In the bottom of the second, they received a jolt of life from one of their seniors. Kaitlyn DeCapua opened the inning with a single to left off Aimee Kistner. Megan Jacques was up next and the catcher blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence (her first home run of the season) to put Milford in front.

“We needed something. Something needed to be ignited,” said Jacques. “Once that happened, I think it trickled down among the team and everyone had a fire lit in them.”

DiVitto added, “That was a big boost for us and it proved to the girls that we can compete and we can come out on top if we play our game.”

Kelley Reichert started the game for the Hawks, who were playing their fourth game in six days, but after Wade led-off the third with a single, DiVitto made the change and brought in Ali Atherton. She would allow only three hits in five innings of relief.

One of those hits tied the game in the third, as Kya Enos lined a double that Maggie Farrell laid out for but missed by inches in left center. Wade came around to score her second run of the game.

It stayed tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth and the game was being played at a tempo and at a competitive level befitting two teams that have the potential to add to their Kelley-Rex and Davenport division titles.

Enos made a sliding grab of a sinking liner to end the third, after Kistner, Wade and Katie Van Zandt turned a 1-6-3 double play. Navarro was also excellent in the field, creating all three outs in a perfect fourth inning and making a nice pick of a liner to start the sixth. Jill Powers and Emily Piergustavo made similar plays in the field for the Hawks.

The wheels fell off for Taunton in the fifth. With one out, Wade made a rare throwing error to allow Shannon Cormier to reach. Kate Irwin was next and she bunted past the charging Jaime Brown at third for an infield single. Cormier would come in to score on a second Taunton error and an inning that should have already been over continued for the Hawks offense.

Milford made the Tigers pay. Jess Tomaso singled to center and that scored Irwin and two batters later DeCapua cleared the bases with a single that plated a pair of runs and pushed the Milford lead to 6-2.

“We’ve played a lot of great teams and it’s just that; its the team that can capitalize on the mistakes that’s going to win,” said DiVitto.

Taunton coach Dave Lewry remarked, “We haven’t had an inning like that all year, especially where the snowball goes down the hill and it just gets bigger and bigger and it did that.

“Maybe it’s good to get it out of our system and not in tournament time, but they’re a real good team, they hit the ball, and if you give them five, six outs in an inning you’re going to have a tough time.”

With two outs in the sixth, Cormier again provided Milford with punch at the bottom of the order with a triple that landed just inside the line in left. She scored on Irwin’s second infield single in as many innings.

DiVitto explained, “There are no easy outs in our lineup one through nine. Shannon Cormier is a great bat in the nine-hole and turning the lineup over.”

Navarro picked up her second RBI of the game with a single to score Liana Duarte in the seventh, but that was as close as Taunton would get, as Atherton finished the game with her third strikeout.

“This is one of the better teams that we’ve seen this year and even losing I think it’s good for us because we had to play with more intensity,” said Lewry. “Maybe, we just lost a little bit of that edge and this can help us get it back.”

Jacques said, “This is a really great win. Everyone did their job and they did it well and I think that was the ultimate deciding factor between who won and lost.

“I think this gave us a little belief that we can beat anybody. This whole week we’ve been having a playoff mindset and this was the topping to the cake that we’re ready.”

Taunton (18-1, 14-1) can clinch its first outright Hockomock title with a win at Mansfield on Monday. Milford (15-4,12-3) will wrap up the regular season against Stoughton on Tuesday.

Attleboro, 2 @ King Philip, 1 – Final (8 inn.) – Nate Tellier scored both of Attleboro’s runs and tossed seven innings, allowing just one run to help the Bombardiers get a win in extra innings. King Philip took the lead in the fifth inning, with Jake Cavanagh getting hit by a pitch and then scoring on a single from Stephan MacMeans. Tellier reached on a walk in the sixth, stole second, moved to third on grounder and then scored when Will Carter made contact and the throw to home was off the mark. In the eighth inning, Tellier connected for a one out triple – his third triple in as many games – and scored on an RBI single from Pat Collins up the middle. On the mound, Tellier had 13 strikeouts, scattering five hits in seven innings of work. Matt Callahan pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half of the eighth to clinch the win. Jack DiCenso allowed just one hit in 5.1 innings of work, striking out seven.

Canton, 6 @ Milford, 7 – Final – With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Arcudi connected for his second hit of the game, this one with the bases loaded to score Blake Hill for the game winning run. Hill hit a two-out double and Nick Johnson (HBP) and Marc Fornaciari (walk) loaded the bases. The Scarlet Hawks had 13 hits as a team with Hill (double, triple) and Arcudi leading the way. Chris Speroni, Alex Coady and Zach Tamagni each added a pair of hits for the Scarlet Hawks. Hill got the win on the mound after coming in relief and pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

Stoughton, 13 @ Foxboro, 4 – Final – Jake Gibb reached base five times with three hits, including a double and a home run, walked twice and drove in a team best four runs to pace Stoughton’s offense. Doug Seaman went 2-4 with a pair of doubles, a stolen base, four runs scored and 2 RBI while Pat Hagerty reached four times and scored three times from in the lead-off spot. Nico Parmeggiani got the win on the mound, going four innings, allowing three runs (two earned), scattering six hits with three strikeouts and just two walks. Barry Cooke pitched well in relief, allowing just one run over three innings, striking out three.

Franklin, 0 @ Taunton, 7 – Final – Luke Figueira put in another strong performance for the Tigers on both the mound and at the plate. Figueira tossed six shutout innings, striking out seven while allowing just two hits. At the plate, the senior had three hits and an RBI. Brendon Mazerolle, Christian Simoes and Charles Hearrold III each had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Tigers.

Mansfield, 3 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – The Rocketeers continued the trend of scoring late inning runs, this time getting a walk off win over the Hornets. With the game tied, Brian Poillucci picked up his fourth hit of the game singling in pinch runner Bryan Harris for the winning run. Poillucci gave the Rocketeers the lead in the first, connecting for a two-run home run, scoring Kyle McCarthy. Mansfield tied the game in the fourth inning with two run shot from Mike Arnold, plating freshman Dan Saraceno (single). Aidan Cahill gave the Hornets their first lead in the sixth inning, scoring pinch runner Conor Driscoll but the Rocketeers tied the game in the bottom half when Ridge Olsen scored Brian Poillucci (triple) with a sacrifice fly. Poillucci finished 4-4 with three runs scored. Matt Papineau got the win for the Rocketeers, tossing a complete game with three strikeouts. Jared Menzer threw a complete game for the Hornets, striking out four.

Oliver Ames, 13 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Ryan Adams had a huge day at the plate for the Tigers, driving in five runs on three hits. Josh Minuskin, Chris Romero, Chris Pearsons and Adam Burr all registered a pair of hits for Oliver Ames.

Softball
King Philip, 18 @ Attleboro, 2 – Final (6 inn.) – The Warriors pounded out 21 hits, led by Sydney Phillips’ three run home run and four total hits. Brooke Taute and Kali Magane each had three hits while Christa Wagner (home run), Meghan Gorman, Elise Pereira and Jessica Bonner all had two hits for the Warriors. Pereira got the win, allowing just one hit in four innings of work. Magane finished the game with four strikeouts in two innings of work.

Milford, 12 @ Canton, 1 – Final – Emily Piergustavo was perfect at the plate, going 5-5 with a double, a triple and knocked in a pair of runs. Maggie Farrell was also perfect, going 4-4 with a double and driving in a team-high four RBI and Jill Powers went 2-4 with three RBI and a home run. Kelley Reichert got the win, scattering three hits without giving up a run while striking out four.

Foxboro, 7 @ Stoughton, 6 – Final – Stoughton was led offensively by freshman Jordan Lyons, who went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and improved her season average to .500. Jenni D’Andrea also added a pair of hits for the Black Knights.

Franklin, 0 @ Taunton, 5 – Final – The Tigers were limited to their lowest offensive output of the season but Aimee Kistner was strong in the circle, striking out five while allowing no runs or walks and just four hits in a complete game effort. Kistner was backed by strong defense, including a nice backhanded play by Jaime Brown down the third base line that resulted in a double play and backhand catch from Bailey Clapp in left with two runnings on. Kistner went 2-2 at the play with a triple and two RBI, Brown was 2-3 with a double, triple and run scored, Liana Duarte went 2-4 and Sarah Bagge was 2-3 with a run.

North Attleboro, 3 @ Mansfield, 5 – Final – Freshman Madyson Bendanillo went 3-4 for the Hornets with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Rachel Carafa also went 2-3 with a pair of RBI for Mansfield, while Maddie Letendre struck out 11 and allowed two earned runs in a complete game win. North Attleboro was led by Jordan Sharpe, who was 2-4 with two RBI, and also got two hits each from Meg Barlow and Gina Miceli. North had seven batters record at least one hit, but left 13 runners on base, including the tying run at first in the seventh.

Sharon, 6 @ Oliver Ames, 11 – Final – Oliver Ames’ offense produced 12 hits to score double-digit runs for the second time this season. Lexie Campbell was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Victoria Ziner was 2-2 with four runs scored and an RBI, Jamie Gottwald was 2-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, Katie Pursley was 2-4 with four RBI and Dalene Gomes was 2-4 with an RBI. OA’s Jordyn Leite and Katie Mills both had a hit for the Tigers as well.

Boys Lacrosse
Oliver Ames, 12 @ Attleboro, 6 – Final – OA senior attack Matt Gilson had three goals, sophomore attack Eric LeBlanc had three goals and three assists and sophomore Owen Gallagher had a pair of goals and one assist for the Tigers. Head coach Chris DiGiacomo said junior Sean Cosgrove was solid in net in his first varsity start.

Franklin, 19 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Senior Trevor Drake scored a pair of goals and had an assist while sophomore Luke Downie scored once and had two assists and sophomore Jonathan O’Glishen scored twice.

Girls Lacrosse
Attleboro, 13 @ Oliver Ames, 9 – Final – After a high scoring first half that saw the Bombardiers take a 9-7 lead in the halftime break, Attleboro was able to limit the Tigers to just two second half goals. Hannah Lamothe led Attleboro with four goals while Sam Spaziano scored twice and had two assists. Kayla Merritt added two goals and an assist while Kyra Lions scored once and had an assist. Mish Logie added two goals for the Bombardiers while Emily Patton and Meg Dotzenrod each scored once.

Canton, 6 @ Watertown, 16 – Final

Taunton, 2 @ Franklin, 20 – Final – Franklin raced out to a big lead by halftime and never looked back. Kenzi Pleshaw scored three goals, including her 100th career goal to pace the Panthers. Senior Dani Lonati scored her first career goal for the Panthers.

Attleboro, 0 @ King Philip, 5 – Final – Garrett Schneider battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win at first singles to lead the Warriors to a sweep. Justin Rohan won 6-2, 6-4 at second singles and Marco DiStefano won 6-0, 6-2 at third singles. Sam Colella and Jake Webster paired up for a 6-3, 6-3 win at first doubles and Aidan Ignatius and Tim Costanzo stepped in to pick up a 6-1, 6-1 win at second doubles.

Stoughton, 0 @ Foxboro, 5 – Final – Foxboro’s Liam Riess won 6-1, 6-3 at first singles, Andre Jaberi won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Matt Tierney picked up 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles. Shawn McNamara and Brandon Wasserman won 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles for the Warriors and Taha Baig and Paul Darcy won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles.

Junior James Johnston and senior Tom Mancini won 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles while seniles Cam Piana and Jeremy Gan won 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles.

Mansfield, 1 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – The Rocketeers picked up wins at first and third singles and both doubles to get the win. Mitchell Dyer won 6-3, 6-4 at first singles and junior Zack Pfeffer won 6-2, 7-5 at third singles for Big Red. North Attleboro also got wins from seniors Jeff Yao and Nick Lockavitch at first doubles (6-3, 6-0) and senior Jake Fontes and junior Daniel Zhang at second doubles (6-2, 6-3). Mansfield’s win came from freshman Luke Nickerson at second singles (7-5, 6-3).

Canton reached the postseason two seasons ago, despite only recording four wins, and this year’s crop of Bulldogs will be hoping to replicate that experience by getting the program back to the postseason. With senior lefty Sarah Reissfelder back in the circle, Canton has an experienced pitcher to rely on this spring and a power bat in the middle of the order.

Senior captains Gabby Matthews, Colleen Phelan, and Kaitlin McCarthy will also provide some pop, while sophomore Hannah Jerrier is hoping to carry over her success from the basketball court to the softball diamond. Taylor Carrington (third base) and Lillian Carrington (centerfield) will also be players to watch as the Bulldogs fight for a spot in the Div. 2 tournament under head coach Tracy Andrews.

FOXBORO

Despite being below .500 again last season, Foxboro continued to improve its win total from the year before, going from six to seven to nine over the past three years, and clinching its fourth straight trip to the state tournament. Head coach Mark Maguire expects that a fifth trip will be in the cards for the Warriors again this spring but he is also setting his sights on challenging Oliver Ames and Milford at the top of the league standings.

Senior Jenna Weinstein is back in the circle for the Warriors and will be the primary starting pitcher, but Foxboro also has depth at pitching and that can make a big difference over the course of the season. Freshmen Camyrn Willis and Emma Rohan will be developed as pitchers of the future.

Weinstein will also be one of the Warriors’ top bats this season along with sophomore Hannah Davis, who is moving behind the plate to replace league all-star Bri Stern after a season at shortstop. Mary Lou Long will take over at short and Kelly Fisher will be at first base and batting cleanup, while senior Carolynn Will continues in center and has been a three-sport captain (soccer and basketball).

“We expect to compete for the Davenport division as long as our pitching comes along,” said Maguire. “We expect to make the playoffs and challenge for the league…and the girls are ready to go.”

Milford enters the season with the potential to win a fourth straight league title and challenging the top teams in the Div. 1 South. Senior shortstop Jill Powers and catcher Meg Jacques will provide leadership for an experienced and still young roster that features sophomore infielder Emily Piergustavo, who is already getting Div. I college interest.

In the circle, junior Ali Atherton returns for a third year and she showed last year that she can compete with the best, as evidenced by her regular season win over South champ Silver Lake. Junior Maggie Farrell will add a lot of pop to the lineup and sophomore Jess Tomasso has transferred in from Hopedale and could make an instant impact in the middle of the order. Sophomore Kate Irwin will step in to fill an outfield role and freshman Emily Hartman will be used at multiple positions this year.

Milford coach Steve DiVitto said, “They are motivated to continue to exceed others expectations and truly believe they can compete with the best of the Hock and state. They have set the bar high-and have worked tirelessly in the off-season to strive and reach those goals.”

OLIVER AMES

Oliver Ames finished behind Milford in the Davenport last year, but pulled an upset over league rival Mansfield to advance to the first round of the state tournament to face eventual South champ Silver Lake. The Tigers will be hoping to challenge the Hawks again this spring and make a run at the league title.

Spearheading the offensive attack for OA will be senior Jamie Gottwald, who led the Tigers with a .449 battling average and three homers last year. Classmate Katie Pursley will also be back after hitting .389 last year and fellow senior Missy Krim will bring experience to the outfield. Caroline Mahoney hit .352 last season and the sophomore return at third base, while junior Victoria Ziner has been off to a strong start at shortstop this preseason.

One of the biggest changes for the Tigers will be in the circle where freshman Kayla Georgeu will be the starter with sophomore Alexis Campbell will help out as a pitcher and second baseman. Head coach Lindsey Allison said, “There are still some puzzle pieces we are working on to finalize positions being filled from graduating seven last year…We are definitely looking to play .500 ball and make tournament again this year.”

SHARON

Sharon will look to build on last season and while the Eagles may not be challenging for the league title this season they will be hoping that the mix of experienced starters and talented underclassmen can make a push towards the postseason.

Sharon will be aided by experienced pitching, as junior Clara Cook will be the starter for the third season in a row and her battery-mate is senior Rachel Ulsen, a two-time Hockomock all-star. Senior Jenna Kranseler will be back at first base and junior Sam Marglous will be at shortstop. Head coach Deb Parker will also be counting on versatile freshmen Allison Small and Rebecca Clayman.

Parker said, “Both play a variety of positions so we will spend the next few days figuring out where they will help us the most.”

STOUGHTON

After many years in charge of Stoughton softball, Janet Sullivan has stepped down and first-year head coach Tim Norton has taken over. Norton inherits a team that has lost nine seniors from last year and has as many as eight starters playing new positions this season.

Sam Tullis will be behind the plate this year and the Black Knights will also return seniors Courtney Campbell, Nicole Bodette and Shannon Flaherty. Freshman Karly Estramera will be a player to watch, according to Norton, and may be the starting centerfielder.

Norton said, “Even with the high degree of turnover this year I think the tournament isn’t out of the question.  We have a very solid core of young talented players and if they play up to their potential it could propel us back into the tournament.”

Oliver Ames, 39 @ Foxboro, 47- Final – Jason Procaccini’s 15 points was a game-high as Foxboro grinded to a win to clinch at least a share of the Davenport division title. It marks the program’s first ever Davenport title and first league title since 2003. Charlie Ryan had 12 points for Oliver Ames. 

Mansfield, 55 @ Franklin, 51 – Final – Franklin rallied from a 15 point second half deficit to get within two in the final minutes but a big shot from Mansfield’s Matt Ehrlich and key stops sealed the win for the Hornets. Tyler Boulter had a team-high 12 points while Sam Goldberg had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Matt Ehrlich (four rebounds, four assists) and Christian Weber each had nine points, Nick Baskin had six and Max Boen had five points and four assists. Franklin sophomore Connor Peterson scored 21 points and hauled in nine rebounds while freshman Jay Dieterle netted 18 points.

North Attleboro, 57 @ Franklin, 60 – Final – Tim Prunier hit two free throws down the stretch to stretch the Panthers’ lead to three as Franklin outlasted North Attleboro. The Rocketeers trailed by nine at halftime but rallied to get a 45-44 lead heading into the final period. Prunier finished with a team-best 18 points while freshman Jay Dieterle added 13 points and sophomore Connor Peterson had 11 points. North junior Brent Doherty also had 18 points, Kyle McCarthy scored a career-high 13 points in his first start and Mario Bresko added 11 points. 

King Philip, 54 @ Taunton, 62 – Final – King Philip led for three quarters but Taunton was able to overcome the deficit and get the win in the final quarter. Senior Carlos Borrero scored all 11 of his points in the second half and senior Jose Mercado finished with a game-high 17 points. Tommy MacLean added 13 points. Sophomore Tom Madden had a team-high 13 points for KP, who also got 10 points from Seth Sullivan and Pharoah David each. 

Stoughton, 48 @ Oliver Ames, 70 – Final – Dylan Mahoney had a team-high 15 points while Tim Kelley, Shawn Cardoza and Nick Welch all added 11 points apiece in the Tigers’ big win.

KP also got 10 points each from Maddie Purdue and Christina Hathaway. Taunton sophomore Hannah Moniz had a game-high 14 points and freshman Lily Patneaude chipped in with nine points for the Tigers. 

Mansfield, 38 @ Attleboro, 48 – Final – The Bombardiers finished the game with a 9-0 run in the final 4:27 to clinch the win. Sam Pierce led Attleboro with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sarah Deyo had 13 points and 12 boards and Emily Houle had nine points for the Bombardiers. Mansfield was led by Jen Peel with 11 points and five assists. Meg Hill added nine points, 11 rebounds, and eight blocks.

Taunton Rallies Late to Beat Milford, Earn First Win

TAUNTON, Mass. – The Tigers have a young roster, one that has suffered through injuries and missing players during a difficult first half of the season, but on Tuesday night Taunton set aside the early season disappointments and found a way to get its first win of the season.

Senior forward Alyssa Gibson led the Tigers with 13 points and nine rebounds, including five points in the fourth quarter as Taunton rallied from from five points down to pull out a 44-40 victory over Milford.

“We needed to pick it up,” said Taunton coach Walter Harrigan. “We needed a win. These girls have worked hard, we’ve been decimated with injuries and all the stuff going on this year, so they deserved it.”

At the start of the fourth, Milford had built a 34-28 lead behind nine of Kate Irwin’s team-high 12 points, but good ball movement against the Hawks’ zone got the ball to Jordan Wade (nine points) and the senior guard knocked down her third three of the game to cut the lead to just three.

After MacKenzie Handrahan scored her only basket of the game on a rebound putback, Emma Liskov answered with a layup that made it 36-33. Raquia Pate (eight points, 10 rebounds) scored on another offensive rebound to once again bring Taunton back within one.

“I thought we did a good job right from the beginning,” said Harrigan. “I thought we boxed out really well; offensively we’re just a little stagnant and we really weren’t getting the ball movement.”

After an Irwin free throw, Gibson twice was fouled taking the ball to the basket and each time made three of four free throws to tie the game at 38-38 with 2:15 remaining. It was the first time the game had been tied since the opening quarter. On Taunton’s next possession, freshman Lily Patneaude scored on a runner to give Taunton the lead  and then Gibson scored on a layup to extend it to four points.

Harrigan said, “We were hoping to get one run. We were hoping it would come early, but luckily we were able to get it late in the game.”

Irwin raced up the floor to score on a layup and cut it back to two and the Hawks managed to create a turnover on the sideline, but Jill Burley missed both free throws after the steal and Taunton claimed the rebound. Milford was only 3-10 from the line in the fourth and also missed several chances close to the rim.

“We couldn’t put the ball in the hoop and we couldn’t rebound,” said Milford coach T.J. Dolliver, “so it was kind of a combination of all of it. If you can’t make easy ones, can’t make free throws, then you have to rely on tough shots and that’s not the way you want to go.”

Patneaude made a free throw for the Tigers to make it 43-40, but missed the second. The ball bounced free and Hanrahan again chased down the rebound to save the possession. Maggie Sullivan was fouled and made a free throw to essentially ice the game up four in the final seconds.

“It’s just tough to watch because sometimes we just don’t have any fight,” Dolliver remarked. “We need to get angry sometimes and actually battle, but it’s something we need to work on as a team and I need to work on as a coach and try to figure out a solution.”

Milford took a 20-17 lead into halftime. Irwin and Gill Valanzola each scored five points in the opening half, while Pate led the Tigers with six and Gibson had four.

In the third quarter, the Hawks went on a run and jumped out to their largest lead of the game at 26-17. Irwin was proving difficult to stop for the Tigers, especially when she got into transition. Junior forward Nicole Dahlgren also provided an offensive spark with six of her 10 points coming in the third. Senior Jill Powers also chipped in with three.

The Tigers battled back to stay in the game heading to the fourth. Abby Kingman hit a jumper just as it looked like Milford may pull away. Gibson scored four points in the quarter, Hannah Moniz (five points) hit a perimeter shot and Wade knocked down a big three that cut the lead back down to two points.

Powers answered with a bucket on the other end and the Hawks went into the fourth with a five-point lead. It could have been another game in which the Tigers came close but Taunton showed resiliency to close it out and get its first win of the season.

Harrigan commented, “We’ve been close in a couple, but they’ve got to continue to work hard. We know what we have. We’ve got some senior leadership and then we’re very young and we’re going to continue to improve as the season wears on.”

Taunton (1-9, 1-7) will try to start a winning streak on Friday when it hosts North Attleboro. Milford (4-7, 1-7) will look to bounce back when it travels to Davenport leader Oliver Ames.

Foxboro Boys and Girls Complete Sweep of Milford

MILFORD, Mass. – Despite a strong effort by a young Milford girls’ squad, it was not enough to overcome the Foxboro Warriors on Friday night, falling by a score of 66-55.

Dominance from the start was key in the Warrior’s victory. Foxboro outscored Milford 20-7 in the first quarter, despite committing five fouls. Foxboro senior Cassidy Harrison scored 12 of the team’s 20 points in the first.

“She’s been scoring a lot early in games, and everyone moves off of that energy she brings out there offensively,” said Foxboro coach Lisa Downs. Downs also complimented the team’s defense early on in the game. She said, “Our defense in the first half was a catalyst to what we were able to do on offense.”

Milford, however, did not go down without a fight. The effort from the Scarlet Hawks was at top level throughout the entire game. The game as a whole was a total team effort, with points being distributed throughout multiple players.

“We knew who we were going up against; we knew Foxboro was a very good team,” said Milford coach T.J. Dolliver. “We kept the energy up and we needed to, because if we ever hung our head at any point, it would’ve affected us mentally, and in the game as well.”

Despite having a young roster, Milford continues to improve game-by-game. After losing a tough match-up to Sharon on Monday night, they looked to bounce back stronger than before, striving to reach their goal of getting better every game.

Milford’s top scorer on the night was senior Jill Powers with 15 points and she also added six rebounds. Sophomore Nicole Dahlgren added 10 points and five rebounds for Milford.

Foxboro looks to continue its win streak on Tuesday night at home against Franklin, while Milford looks to come back from tonight’s loss Tuesday night at home versus Attleboro.

Foxboro Boys Run Away With Road Victory

After a strong victory on the girl’s side, it was up to the Foxboro boys to complete the sweep. It was soon clear that the team would have little issue completing the challenge. The Warriors completed a statement victory over the Scarlet Hawks, winning 64-44.

After trailing Milford 1-0 for the first minutes of the first quarter, Foxboro’s offense came alive, and ultimately outscored Milford in the first quarter 15-8, while committing just two fouls.

Foxboro’s top scorer for the night was senior forward Rob Lowey, tallying 20 points for the Warriors. Next to Lowey was fellow senior Alex DuBrow, with the guard adding 15 points.

Despite these numbers, Foxboro’s victory tonight was a full team effort. “I was really proud of our depth,” said Foxboro coach Jon Gibbs. “A lot of different guys stepped up for us tonight when we had some of our key guys in foul trouble, so I was really proud of that.”

On the Milford side, the leading scorers for the Scarlet Hawks were junior guard Zach Tamagni and senior forward Dwight Anderson, with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

A junior and senior-heavy roster means returning experience for the team. This has shown throughout the season, especially after a statement win over Davenport rival Sharon this past Monday night.

Milford (3-3, 2-2) looks to bounce back from tonight on Tuesday night at Attleboro. The future for the Warriors is very bright, as well. After tonight’s victory, Foxboro (6-1, 4-1) looks to carry that momentum into the next game at Franklin.

Gibbs said, “We’re continuing to get better, so right now its just continue to get better, and continue to build momentum and keep it going as long as we can.”

King Philip, 63 @ Milford, 66 – Final – Milford’s Dwight Anderson recorded a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds while Dee Torres added 15 points and Nate Davila had eight points. King Philip freshman Kyle Layman also had a double-double with 20 points and 25 rebounds. 

North Attleboro, 55 @ Sharon, 69 – Final – Ricardo Ripley was the top scorer for the Eagles with 18 points while Matt Lowerre hit three three pointers and finished with 11 points. Mitchell Sirota and Adam Banks had strong games and combined for 23 points. Brent Doherty led North Attleboro with a game-high 21 points. 
Girls Basketball
Canton, 24 @ Mansfield, 49 – Final – Caroline Maher led the way for the Hornets, who led 43-14 going into the fourth, with 13 points. Jackie Carchedi had a solid overall game for Mansfield with seven points, six rebounds, and seven steals.
Foxboro, 68 @ Taunton, 36 – Final – Ashley Sampson led the way for the Warriors with 25 points. Cassidy Harrison added 11 and Carolyn Will had 10 for Foxboro.

Oliver Ames, 58 @ Franklin, 47 – Final – Kayla Raymond had a double-double for the Tigers with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Niyera Mitchell added 14 points to pace the Tigers, who outscored Franklin 24-10 in the fourth quarter after trailing by six with four minutes to go. Francesca Calabraro added 10 points and Sam Bamford has six of OA’s 12 steals. Franklin was led by Lauren Rudolph with 10 points and Aubrie Kutil and Margaux Welsh each had seven.
Milford, 41 @ King Philip, 37 – Final – Kate Irwin led the Hawks with 18 points and Jill Power added nine points for Milford.
Sharon, 44 @ North Attleboro, 57 – Final – The Rocketeers were led by Caroline Collard with 13 points. Ashley Ahern added 11 points and six assists, while Emily Schromm had 10 for North. Sharon was led by Alyssa Piazza with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds and 13 points from Charlotte Ransom. 

Stoughton, 58 @ Attleboro, 49 – Final – Jess Greer led Stoughton with 14 points and sophomore Val Whalen chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Four different players scored in double figures for the Black Knights. 
Hockey
Attleboro, 3 vs. Littleton/Bromfield, 2 – Final (2 OT) – Attleboro won the game on a goal by P.J. Elliott on the first shift of four on four play in the second overtime for the Bombardiers who advance to the tournament’s championship game. Elliott also had the tying goal in the third period. Jack Flynn scored Attleboro’s first goal on the power play. The game counts as a 2-2 draw in terms of tournament qualification.
Taunton, 6 vs. Durfee, 1 – Final – Zack Albert and Jordan Hoey scored a pair of goals while Jake Roberts added one and Jack Patneaude scored his first career goal. Mike Volkmann had three assists and Cam Pitts made 14 saves in net for the win.
