Staples' Late Tally Lifts Mansfield Over King Philip

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Mansfield junior Kevin Bouck picked a pretty good time to score his first goal of the season, giving the Hornets the lead with less than a minute to play in the first half.

Senior Jake Staples picked an even better time for his.

Staples got on the end of a long free kick from junior Max Gurnon, lunging in the area to get his head to the ball and find the back of the net to break a tie game with just over 10 minutes to play.

The goal would hold up over the final minutes and Mansfield picked up a 2-1 win over King Philip in the Second Round of the D1 South tournament.

“All three games that we’ve played have been anyone’s match,” Mansfield head coach Steve Sheridan said. “There’s been a total of five goals in the three games, it’s always a hard fought game. They’re great. [Joe] Kellett to me is one of the best players around, he’s unbelievable. I can’t say enough about him or Cam [Mullins], they’re both great players.”

After a delay for continuation, the referee whistled KP for a high kick just before midfield. Gurnon hit a line drive ball right over the top of the defense and Staples sprinted in right behind and headed the ball in for the game winner.

“We’re not used to having someone like Staples do a diving header but you know, it was a beautiful goal,” Sheridan said. “We’re a deep team…certain guys in certain games. Staples was playing great in the first half and I put him back in in the second half and he scores that great game winning goal. Kevin only played the last eight minutes in the first half and scored the goal. He came off the bench cold too.”

It was a battle throughout the first half, and really throughout the entire game. King Philip sophomore Larsen Keys had the first chance of the game, taking a cross from junior Colby Koch but his shot went just wide at the far post.

In the 14th minute, Tyler Mann ripped in a cross that was dropped by Mansfield goalie Michael Kirejczyk but he was able to get a touch to the loose ball and it was cleared away.

Mansfield’s first chance came in the 19th minute as Jareme DiLirenzo muscled his way through KP’s defense and unleashed a shot from a tight angle but Brandon Ziolkowski was in position at the near post.

The Warriors dominated possession over the final 10 minutes of the first half, stringing together at least a spell of over a dozen passes before a cross was collected by Kirejczyk,

The Hornets first tally came from seemingly nothing as Sean Lanzillo blocked a clearance and quickly fed Charlie Rogers in. Rogers raced to the end line and then centered a cross back where Bouck easily buried it into the back of the net with less than a minute to play in the first half.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to level the game in the second half, knotting the game at one less than four minutes in. Senior captain Joe Kellett came away with a steal at midfield, took a touch before sending Mann down the left flank. Mann did well with his hold up play, allowing Kellett to come on an overlapping run and he laid it off. Kellett took possession, raced towards the end line and hit a perfect low cross back across the middle and sophomore Mike Rowe slotted it into the corner of the net.

Midway through the second half, the Warriors thought they had earned a penalty kick. Mann took control in his own half and raced nearly 60 yards before being taken down from behind right on the edge of the area. The ref originally seemed to point to the spot for a PK but instead it was placed at the 20 yard line. Kellett’s ensuing free kick was unable to elude the wall and was cleared.

Staples’ goal came with just over 10 minutes to play and neither side was able to register a scoring chance in the remaining time, despite five long throw in opportunities for KP.

“A loss is always a sour taste in your mouth but when you have two good teams that battle it out, and that was one hell of a goal on that second one from Mansfield, it’s kind of hard to walk away and say you didn’t try to earn it,’ King Philip head coach Nick Gale said. “The kids left it all out there. It was a well deserved win on their part. Out of the three games we’ve played them, that was probably the best they’ve played.

“Our objective was to play good soccer and be the better soccer team. That’s the way we’ve been training and the philosophy we’ve followed. We wanted to beat them playing good soccer and I think we came up short. But we worked hard on it.”

KP finishes the season 8-8-3 overall. Mansfield is now 13-3-3 and will advance to the Quarterfinals of the D1 South tournament and will travel to #4 Needham on Sunday. The time is still to be announced.

Devante Teixeira equalized in the first half and then assisted on Anthony Barreira’s go-ahead goal early in the second.

King Philip, 1 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – King Philip sophomore Tyler Mann put the Warriors up a goal with just over 10 minutes left to play but just a minute later Nick Parent headed home a service from Austin Kent to knot the game at one. 

Mansfield, 2 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – After a scoreless first half, Mansfield scored twice inside the opening minutes of the second half. Jareme DiLorenzo opened the scoring off an assist from Nick Hyland then Charlie Rogers doubled the lead off a feed from Brad Eames. Michael Kirejczyk made eight saves to record his 10th save, which is a single season record for Mansfield. With the win, the Hornets clinch the program’s first ever outright Hockomock title. 
Stoughton, 2 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Stoughton freshman Fabio Ponce De Leon scored an early goal, converting a shot at the near post while sophomore Tyler Melo doubled the lead off a cross from junior Jeremy Fishman. Head coach Aaron Salter said Kyle Silverman made an outstanding save at the end of the match to keep the clean sheet. With the win, Stoughton qualified for the state tournament for the second straight year. 
Girls Soccer
North Attleboro, 0 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Rebekah Entwistle scored the lone goal of the game for the Bombardiers to win the Blue-Red Cup. Kayla Merritt had the assist. Madison Brown (Attleboro) and Hana Caster (North) were named the game’s MVPs.

Sharon, 1 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Shannon Foley and Sarah MacQuarrie each had a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs. Lilah Sullivan had Canton’s other goals.
Oliver Ames, 1 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Riley Collins and Carolynn Will scored the goals for the Warriors in the second half to come back from a 1-0 deficit. Dana Lowney scored the OA goal on an assist from Francesca Calabraro.
Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – Alexis Stowell opened the scoring off an assist by her sister Victoria. Jess Kroushl added a second off an assist by Alexis Stowell and Halle Atkinson scored an unassisted third.

Mansfield, 2 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – Alana Vincent scored the winning goal for the Tigers with six minutes remaining to clinch a playoff spot. It was Vincent’s second goal of the game. Sam Tichelaar also scored for Taunton. Jackie Carchedi and Jill Savoie each scored for the Hornets. 

Milford, 2 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Katie Brown and Kristen Franzini scored the goals for Milford. Rachel LeBlanc and Maggie Boyle each had assists. Stoughton’s goal was scored by Amelia Cochran off an assist from Emmie Sprague. Marissa Williams and Alecia Quinones both played well in net for the Black Knights according to head coach Tara Daniels. 
Volleyball
Attleboro, 0 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final
Sharon, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton got the win at home with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-11 victory. Sarah Reissfelder had six kills and Nicole Poole paced the offense with 23 assists and added 12 digs. Canton head coach Pat Cawley said Emma Gobbi, Kaitlin McCarthy and Kelly Dever played well at the net.

Foxboro, 3 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final

King Philip, 3 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – With the match tied 1-1, KP picked up the a vital win in game three and walked away with a  25-11, 16-25, 27-25, 25-21 win. Josie Rowean led the way with 16 kills, Gwen Uyrus added six kill, Amelia Murphy and Emma Lopez each had four kills and Micaela Murray had seven digs. Franklin’s Aubrie Kutil had 10 kills, Beth Neal had 19 assists, seven kills and two blocks and Alyssa Shea had seven kills.

Mansfield, 3 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – With a win and a loss from Franklin, Mansfield clinched a share of the Hockomock League’s Kelley-Rex title, the program’s first ever Hockomock League title. Mansfield picked up the sweep with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-19. Cathryn Heavey had 31 assists, Sarah Mullahy had 17 service points, Meg Hill had 15 kills and Jess Haradon finished with 10 digs. 
Stoughton, 1 @ Milford, 3 – Final – Stoughton’s Bridgette Whalen had eight blocks, 10 kills, 11 digs, 11 service points and fives aces and Valerie Whalen with five blocks and seven kills.

Senior Chris Elsner scored his first career goal, heading home a corner from Brad Eames and Miller added the insurance goal four minutes off an assist from Jareme DiLorenzo. Michael Kirejczyk made eight saves in net as the Hornets clinched at least a share of the Kelley-Rex division title.

Stoughton, 1 @ Canton, 0 – Final – Stoughton freshman Fabio Ponce De Leon scored his eighth goal of the season off of what head coach Aaron Salter called a great pass from Winston Kessah. Salter said Goddy Frombe was fantastic at the back and Kyle Silverman was solid for the whole game.

Foxboro, 4 @ Sharon, 2 – Final – Joe Morrison, Devante Teixeira and Anthony Barreira each scored a goal inside the first eight minutes as the Warriors jumped out to an early lead. Jake Goloboy brought the Eagles back within two in the 14th minute and scored again in the 51st minute to make it a one goal game. But Teixeira netted his second in the 62nd minute for the insurance goal.

Franklin, 1 @ North Attleboro, 0 – Final – Franklin’s Nick Parent scored in the second half off an assist from Aaron Frongillo for the lone goal of the game.

King Philip, 9 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Sophomore Tyler Mann scored a first half hat trick and one assist for the Warriors, who jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the break. Joe Kellett had three assists and one goal, Will Weir and Larsen Keys each had a goal and an assists, Nick Cannella had a pair of assists and Thomas Lugten netted a pair of goals. Mike Rowe also had a goal for KP. Austin Botelho scored off an assist from Derek Pereira for Taunton.

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Oliver Ames clinched at least a share of the Davenport division title with the win. Thomas McCormick had a pair of assists, setting up Keegan Nutt and Jack Sheldon, and scored once himself. Chris Romero picked up an assist on McCormick’s goal.

Mansfield, 4 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Emma Goulet scored twice and Jackie Carchedi had a pair of assists to lead the Hornets. Melissa Reef and Rebecca Bornstein also scored for Mansfield. Paige Medeiros scored the lone goal for Attleboro.

North Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – Alexis Stowell scored the goal for the Panthers off an assist from Emily Mastaj. Hana Caster scored from a Shannon Kingsley corner 12 minutes into the game. It was the first goal that Franklin has allowed this season.

Milford, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final –  Jacqueline Mills scored a brace and Francesca Calabraro added a third for OA. Delaney Benton, Erin Fitzgerald, and Sam Bamford had the assists for the Tigers and Regan Benton and Bethany Dunk shared the shutout. Milford coach Jay Mastaj noted that Gabby O’Neil and Brianna Braza played well for the Hawks.

Hornets Beat Franklin, Seize Control of Kelley-Rex

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Charlie Rogers’ goal in the fifth minute of Monday night’s Kelley-Rex clash between Mansfield and Franklin sure was a welcome sight for the struggling Hornet offense.
In the previous two games against Sharon and King Philip, Mansfield was held off the scoreboard so the Hornets knew a fast start was going to be needed against the Panthers.
Senior captain Jared Miller launched a 20 yard shot off of the crossbar and Rogers was in the right place at the right time as he was able to recover the ball and put it into the back of the net giving Mansfield a quick 1-0 lead.
“We talk all the time about following up each other’s shots and that’s what (Rogers) did,” Mansfield head coach Steve Sheridan said.  “Jared took his shot, went off the crossbar, and Charlie was going right in and he was right there.”
Just two minutes into the second half, Miller recorded his second assist when he found senior Jack Reilly open from 15 yards out.  Reilly gathered the pass and rifled the shot to the far post of the goal giving the Hornets comfort room with a 2-0 lead.
“He’s (Miller) just coming back from a knee injury and I wasn’t sure if he was going to play before the game but he ended up playing a heck of a game,” Sheridan said of Miller’s performance. “I think he was more determined than ever for this game.  He was prepared for this game.”
Mansfield had several chances to increase their lead to three but the Franklin defense had other ideas.  In the 56th minute, Jareme DiLorenzo broke away from the pesky Panther defense and found Sean Lanzillo.  After a couple dribbles, Lanzillo fed Chris Elsner near the goal and Elsner took a chance at goal but Franklin goalie Henri Guilmette came up with the save.  Two minutes later in the 58th minute, Max Gurnon’s free kick went off the bar forcing a corner.  Elsner took the corner finding Miller but Guilmette dove to the right to stop the ball from going in.
From there, Franklin dominated possession time and gave Mansfield a scare.  Cam LeBlanc pulled the Panthers within a goal in the 61st minute.  LeBlanc came away with the ball after a scrum with the Hornet defense and shot it near the right post.
A minute later, Franklin had an opportunity to tie the score at two but Kevin Hall’s shot went just right of the net.  In the 67th minute, Patrick Kapples found LeBlanc on a cross but the ball, again, went right of the net.
The last real scoring threat came in the 78th minute.  After a Wesley Kozil throw-in resulted in a scrum in the box, Hatim Brahimi came away with the ball and took another chance at goal.  This time, however, the ball was over the bar.
“I knew that they were going to come out in the second half.  Tonight’s battle we were both tied for first place and whoever comes out of this game controls their own destiny for the rest of year with three games left.  I knew they were going to come out and thank God that Jack got that one goal right off the bat to give us a two goal cushion,” Sheridan said. “They pressed us and I went with five midfielders after we scored that goal just to try to control the midfield and that’s what it was, it was an extra defender in the midfield.”
Leading the Mansfield defense was senior captain Chris Elsner.  Whenever the Panthers got near striking distance, it seemed as though Elsner was always finding a way to break up the scrums and give the ball back to the Hornets with clearances.  In addition to his tenacious defense, Elsner had several attacking throw-ins but the Hornets weren’t able to make the most of them.
“That’s what his job is – to control the midfield and help us move up when he can and his big throws have been key,” Sheridan said of Elsner. “We’ve scored a lot off of his throws but unfortunately we didn’t get any today.  His defense has been rock solid and we can’t ask for anything more from him.”
The win clinches the Hornets a spot in the tournament as well as giving them the sole lead for first place in the Kelley-Rex.
“It feels great.  We’ve finally got enough points, we qualified for the tournament and hopefully we can hold (Franklin) off for the league.  I feel really good about the tournament,” Sheridan said. “I said that was our number one goal was to just qualify for the tournament.  If we can get our offense going, I like our chances.”
Mansfield (8-3-2) hosts North Attleboro on Friday while Franklin (8-5) travels to Xaverian for a non-league game on Wednesday.

Taunton, 1 @ Mansfield, 4 – Final – Five minutes into the game, sophomore Sean Lanzillo put the hosts on the board off an assist from Jack Rielly. Just over 15 minutes later, senior Jared Miller doubled the lead for the Hornets off an assist from Charlie Rogers to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Five minutes into the second half, Lanzillo set up Rogers for Mansfield’s third goal and just 10 mintues later Brendan Sullivan finished off a pass from Jareme DiLoranzo to make it 4-0. Austin Botelho scored a late goal for Taunton.

North Attleboro, 5 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Sophomore Haley Guertin and senior Hana Caster linked up three times for the Rocketeers to get a big win on the road over rival Attleboro. Caster set up Guertin for North Attleboro’s first and third goals while Guertin set up Caster for the Rocketeers’ fourth goal. Leah Jette scored North Attleboro’s second goal off an assist from Felicity Monfils and Caster added her second on a breakaway. Paige Medeiors scored Attleboro’s goal.

King Philip, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Bailey Knous and Alexis Stowell each scored goals for the Panthers.

Taunton, 0 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Jackie Carchedi had a goal and an assist for the Hornets. Jen Kemp had the second goal and Emily Gaumond made four saves to record her fifth shutout of the season.

Stoughton, 0 @ Milford, 2 – Final – Katie Brown and Kristen Franzini each scored for Milford and Maggie Boyle had her fourth assist of the season. Stoughton goalie Marissa Williams made 12 saves in her first game back from injury. Stoughton head coach Tara Daniels said Samantha Tullis, Sarah Quattrucci, and Sarah Widrow kept Stoughton’s back field strong.

North Attleboro, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final
Oliver Ames, 3 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Oliver Ames picked up its third straight win with a 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-9 win on the road. Bridget McCarthy led Oliver Ames with 48 assists and Emma Petrillo controlled the offense with 22 kills. 

Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 1 – Final – The Panthers picked up a key Kelley-Rex win with scores of 28-26, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21. Dayna McCue had 30 digs and four aces, Aubrie Kutil and Beth Neal each had 10 kills while Kutil added an ace and Neal had a pair of aces and blocks and 13 assists. Franklin Head coach Kate Horsmann said Caroline Maguire had a huge role defensively at the net with four blocks and three kills. For King Philip, Josie Rowean led the team in attacks and had six service points in game one, Gwen Uyrus added seven service points in game two, Emma Lopez had eight service points in game three, and Amanda Loewen had five digs.

Taunton, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – In a back and forth affair, Taunton snapped its three game skid with a 11-25, 29-27, 25-20, 16-25, 15-12 win. Tatum Speicher wa the catalyst for the offense with 39 assists, six digs and three kills. Molly Sullivan had 29 serve receives and 16 digs while Meghan Navarro solidified the back row with 15 digs and three aces. Mansfield sophomore Meg Hill had 13 hills, Juliana Newell added eight kills and Jess Haradon had 17 digs. 

Milford, 2 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Stoughton rallied from a 2-1 deficit to pull off a 13-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13 win in thrilling fashion. Stoughton senior Bianca DeSousa had 20 assists, 15 digs, 27 service points and 10 aces and sophomore Valerie Whalen had 15 blocks and 6 kills. Stoughton head coach Ken Gay said Elizabeth Slade had outstanding defensive play for the Black Knights. For Milford, Jill Powers had a team-best 12 kills while Kara Halpin, Aleye Momodu and Kayla Antonellis each had seven kills apiece. Lauren Zouranjian and Allie Collins combined for 41 assists.

Canton, 171 @ Franklin, 180 – Final – Canton sophomore Jack Goyetch was the match medalist, shooting a 40 for the day. Bryan Woelfel shot a 43 for the Panthers.

Mansfield, 2 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Chris Elsner picked up his sixth assist of the season, finding Brad Eames for the opening goal just seven minutes into the game to give the Hornets the early lead. Cullin Anastasia doubled the Hornets’ lead just seconds before the halftime before off an assist from Jareme DiLirenzo. Michael Kirejczyk made five saves in net and got strong performances from Harry Braidt, Max Gurnon, Nick Hyland and Elsner in front of him. 

Canton, 1 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Freshman Fabio Ponce De Leon finished off a long throw in from Josh Mitchell in the first half but Canton freshman Paul Corcoran scored his first career goal to pull the Bulldogs level. 

Taunton, @ King Philip, 4 – Final – Tyler Mann scored the opening goal inside the first 10 minutes off an assist from Joe Kellett and then Mann returned the favor less than 10 minutes later, finding Kellett on a corner kick. Will Weir also scored a first half goal and Cam Mullins added a fourth for the Warriors early in the second half. 

Milford, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final – Junior Thomas McCormick set up a goal in both the first and second halves to push OA to a key divisional win. McCormick assisted on Keegan Nutt’s goal in the first half and then McCormick set up Jack Sheldon in the second half.
Girls Soccer
Attleboro, 1 @ Mansfield, 4 – Final – Alle Bezeau, Stephanie Kemp, Jen Kemp and Katie Bongarzone all scored second half goals to give Mansfield head coach Kevin Smith his 100th career victory. Paige Medeiros scored for Attleboro. 

Stoughton, 1 @ Canton, 6 – Final – The Bulldogs created a number of chances, according to coach Kate Howarth, and had five different players score goals in the win. Meaghan Hunter scored twice for Canton, which also got goals from Hannah Link, Riley Duserick, Sarah MacQuarrie, and Sarah Connelly. Stoughton’s goal was scored by Krista Michienzi off a cross from Mia Greene. 
Foxboro, 5 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Riley Collins scored a hat trick for Foxboro and Hannah Burns and Hailey Maling each scored once. 

King Philip, 2 @ Taunton, 3 – Final
Oliver Ames, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Oliver Ames jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime behind goals from junior Francesca Calabraro and senior Delaney Benton. Junior Kiana Lozzi added a second half goal for the Tigers. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj said Katie Brown, Kristen Franzini and Nichole Dahlgren played well for the Scarlet Hawks.

Mansfield, 4 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Olivia Horn found the back of the net twice to pace Mansfield to a key divisional win over Attleboro. Caitlin Whitman and Brianna Puccia each scored once for the Hornets.

Canton, 1 @ Stoughton, 2 – Final – Angela Connelly’s goal with 2:39 left in the game lifted Stoughton to its first win over Canton in over a decade. Mia Russell scored Stoughton’s first goal.

Sharon, 0 @ Foxboro, 7 – Final – Annie McGeary scored a hat trick for the Warriors. 

North Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – Senior Samantha Jones made nine saves in net to get the shutout as Franklin bounced back from its first loss of the season. Freshman Annie Walsh scored a pair of goals while senior Kelsey McPhee, sophomore Christina Quinn and freshman Cassi Ronan each scored once. 

Taunton, 1 @ King Philip, 3 – Final – King Philip netted a pair of goals in the second half to break a 1-1 deadlock at halftime. Courtney Foley scored twice, one assisted by Christina Hathaway and one by Casie Curtin. Liz Furfari netted an unassisted goal for KP.

Milford, 25 @ Canton, 30 – Final – Canton senior Mark Clancy broke the course record time, finishing in 16:08 to beat the old record by 13 seconds. Canton’s other finishes were sophomore Jack Healey in fourth (17:09), senior Courtland Priest in sixth (17:41) Thomas Cahill in ninth (18:04) and Andrew Salvatori in 11th (18:27).

Attleboro, 50 @ King Philip, 15 – Final – King Philip took the first five spots in the race with sophomore Erin Quinn leading the way in 20:41. Erica Layne, Leia Quinn, Nicole Jutras and Brianna Aubin also finished in the top five. 

Milford, 34 @ Canton, 25 – Final – Canton’s Cat Song set a new course record (17:57), smashing the previous record (19:26) but nearly 90 seconds. Olivia Stevens finished fourth (22:13), Ally Chin finished fifth (22;21), Emily Orkin in seventh (22:35) and Margaret Polsgrove (22:54) in eighth.

Milford, 104 @ Stoughton, 122 – Final (6 holes) – Ryan Tomaso, Anthony Arcudi, Riley Lynch and Tylor Renaud were the top four finishers for the Scarlet Hawks. Eoin Doherty was the top finish for Stoughton.

Sharon, 176 @ Canton, 156 – Final – Junior Pat Duggan and sophomore Danny Powers each shot 39 for the Bulldogs, who qualified for the state tournament with the win. Junior Jackson Maffeo added a 39 and Jack Goyetch shot 41 for Canton. Sharon’s Jordan Chabot shot a team-low 39. 

Taunton, 200 @ King Philip, 203 – Final – After being tied at 159 through four cards, the match was decided on the fifth card with Taunton edging KP by three strokes. Mario Wilson and Kaynel Gonsalves each shot 39 for Taunton while Justin Proto shot a 40. For King Philip, Mickey Riley was the match medalist with a 37 and sophomore Danny McLoughlin added a 38. 

Oliver Ames, 158 @ Attleboro, 175 – Final – Steven Tasho and Brian Lambert each carded a 39 to lead the Tigers to a win. Tyler Letendre shot a 40 for Attleboro.
