Rocketeers Continue Upset Run With Win at Franklin

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Hana Caster was the only player to score a goal against the Franklin defense during the regular season. On Sunday afternoon at Pisini Field, Caster also became the only player to score against the Panthers in the postseason and in the process knocked Franklin out of the tournament in the Div. 1 South quarterfinal.

Caster scored just nine minutes into the game to give North Attleboro a lead that it would never relinquish. The 1-0 victory advances the Rocketeers into the semifinal and ends Franklin’s streak of sectional final appearance at three (and four of the last five).

If there were any nerves going against the league champions, North Attleboro certainly hid them well. The Rocketeers, coming off a 3-2 win against Davenport champion Oliver Ames, started well with pressure in the midfield and quick transitions to the front two of Haley Guertin and Caster.

“Franklin, I’ve always said, there’s no question they’re the best team in the league,” said North coach Glenn Pasquel, “but when we came out we thought, it’s just another game.”

He added, “The main thing is these girls focusing. When they focus, we’re on fire; they’re unstoppable.”

In the ninth minute, the pressure paid off when Guertin sprung Caster down the right channel only for the senior forward to hit a tame shot at Franklin keeper Dani Lonati. The ball was quickly heading back towards the Franklin goal and Grace Guertin flicked a header towards Caster who split the central defenders with her speed and then composed herself to chip Lonati.

“She’s a huge impact to our offense the way she’s moving the ball,” said Pasquel.

North continued to pile on the pressure and in the 15th minute, Ellie Teixeira was forced to clear a ball of the line.

Franklin had a chance in the 29th when left back Abigail Gipson crossed but barely missed the head of Molly Duncan and the toe of Meghan Doherty. In the 34th minute Alexis Stowell went on a long, weaving run only to hit a shot from the edge of the box right at North keeper Kiersten Bixby.

“They were the better team,” said Franklin coach Tom Geysen. “That [goal] was the difference but it doesn’t tell the tale of the game. We couldn’t create anything up front, nothing consistent.”

The lack of sustained attack for Franklin was putting extra pressure on the defense to step up and just four minutes after the break, North almost doubled the lead. Haley Guertin got behind the defense but with the goal at her mercy dragged a shot narrowly wide.

In the 54th minute North again came close to the back-breaking goal when a ball was played over the top to Caster and she showed off her speed to outpace Lauren Rudolph. With only Lonati to beat, Caster elected to square the ball and it was cleared.

Two minutes later, another ball was played behind the defense and bounced toward Lonati. Caster never gave up the chase and there was a terrible collision between the keeper and the forward. Caster took a blow to the head and was down for several minutes before walking off with assistance. She would not return following that very scary moment.

Pasquel said, “Hana or anyone of our players, when we see them on the ground, and when she went down and wasn’t moving that was scary, the whole team said to itself that we have to help Hana and go out and win this game.”

Franklin knew that it had to press for an equalizer and the attack started to create more chances and to push higher up the pitch. The problem for the Panthers was that every time Victoria Stowell or Emily Spath or Meghan Georges got any momentum Rachel LaBonte was there for North to sweep up and to lear the attack.

LaBonte spent her freshman season playing mostly as an attacker, but Pasquel moved her back to sweeper in the preseason. He explained, “She’s unbelievable, She reads the play instantly. I just saw it and said to myself, you know what, she’s a defender and I’m going to give her a try.”

The best chance for Franklin came in the 71st minute when Gipson stepped into a full volley off a Stowell corner but hit it right into the chest of Bixby. A yard either side and the game would have been tied.

With four minutes remaining, Geysen called timeout to rally his team. He explained, “You have to push up. Everything goes over the top and you have to go get it. They created some chances but it was too little too late.”

Pasquel told his team, “This is the time we have to get past those injuries and we have to work together. We have four minutes left and then we go on to the next step.”

The clock wound down to nothing, the final whistle sounded, and for the second time in four days, North Attleboro raced onto the pitch to celebrate a victory at the home of one of its rivals.

“It’s the heart that leads this team,” said Pasquel, “and these girls have the biggest heart. Our goal from the beginning was that we’re going to finish to the end.”

Geysen struggled to put into context all that his senior class had accomplished in four years at Franklin. From a state championship as freshmen to three straight sectional finals (in one of the most competitive brackets in the state) to four straight league titles, the seniors had a lot for which to be proud.

“That may be one of the few teams that we’ve lost at home to in four years,” he said. “I had seven [senior] starters and three coming off the bench and they all played well tonight. They each gave it their all.”

North Attleboro will face Whitman-Hanson in the Div. 1 South semifinal on Veterans Day at Marshfield High.

Foxboro, 3 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Noah Schulze gave Stoughton the lead with a goal six minutes into the game. The lead stood until the second half when Devante Teixeira, Anthony Barreira, and Joe Morrison all scored for the Warriors.

Taunton, 1 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – David Stowell put Franklin ahead in the first half off an assist from Wes Kozil. Brian Czuba got his first goal before the break off an assist from Cam LeBlanc. Taunton pulled within one in the second half off a free kick from Austin Botelho but Czuba added an insurance goal off an assist from Hatim Brahimi.

North Attleboro, 0 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Mansfield’s defense set the school record with its 10th shutout this season. Michael Kirejczyk made six saves for his ninth shutout of the season, which ties a school record. Cullin Anastasia and Jack Reilly scored for the Hornets while Reilly and Brenden Sullivan each had an assist.

Canton, 4 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Riley Duserick, Hannah Link, Sarah MacQuarrie and Hayley Mulford each found the back of the net for Canton. Tessa Cudmore had a pair of assists in the win and Shannon Foley had one assist.

Stoughton, 1 @ Foxboro, 4 – Final – Shaina Abbott scored a pair of goals and Katherine Luciano and Riley Collins each scored once for the Warriors. Emerson Sprague scored for the Black Knights.

Mansfield, 3 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – Hana Caster scored off a corner kick from Grace Guertin with just four minutes left to life the Rocketeers. North held a 3-0 lead at the break as Guertin factored into all four goals for Big Red. Guertin was fouled in the area in the 12th minute and Shannon Kingsley buried the penalty kick. Guertin then set up Leah Jette in the 21st minute and then linked up with Kingsley in the 31st minute to build a 3-0 lead at half. Hannah Reiter scored a pair of goals in the second half for Mansfield and Katie Bongarzone scored once to tie the game at three.

Oliver Ames, 4 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Kiana Lozzi scored a pair of goals, Delaney Benton and Francesca Calabraro each netted one goal and Jackie Mills had two assists for Oliver Ames.
Volleyball
King Philip, 3 vs. Walpole, 2 – Final – King Philip dropped the first two sets but rallied back to get the win at home, 20-25, 12-25, 25-12, 25-21, 15-12. Seniors Josie Rowean and Gwen Uyrus shined on senior night with 21 and 12 kills respectively while senior Molly Citarell and Micaela Murray anchored the defense for the Warriors.
Stoughton, 3 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – The Black Knights and Eagles played in their annual Dig for a Cure match and raised over $3,200 for cancer research according to SMAC’s Jeffrey Pickette. Stoughton picked up a 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 sweep on the road. Bridgette Whalen led the Black Knights with nine blocks, six kills, 15 digs and four aces, Bianca DeSousa had 11 digs, nine service points, five kills and four aces and Ava Siegel added 13 service points, five kills and two aces.

Taunton, 2 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Caroline Lounsbury scored the game winning goal with 44 seconds left off assists from Taylor Reutlinger and Kenzi Pleshaw to lift the Panthers. Taunton held a 1-0 lead at halftime but Diana Griffin knotted the game just three minutes into the second half off assists from Cassi Ronan and Reutlinger. Annie Walsh put Franklin ahead at 2-1. Abbey Kingman scored both of Taunton’s goals.

Stoughton, 3 vs. Brockton, 1 – Final – Courtney Campbell, Mia Russell and Ashley Chipman scored for Stoughton, who qualified for the state tournament with the win.

Sharon, 1 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Sharon’s Oliver Hu scored the lone goal of the game with just over 10 minutes to play, converting a pass from Lucas Allaria in the 70th minute. Mike Da Silva made five saves in net for the Scarlet Hawks.

Taunton, 1 @ North Attleboro, 2 – Final – Gareth King scored a pair of goals inside a five minute span, lifting the Rocketeers to their first win of the season. Taunton took the lead in the second half but just 15 seconds later King finished off a through ball from Gabe Pinhancos. Three minutes after that, Kevin Aguilar set up King for the game winner.

Stoughton, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final – Oliver Ames senior Keegan Nutt, junior Thomas McCormick and senior Chris Romero all scored goals in the first half as the Tigers built a 3-0 lead at the break. Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Franklin’s Caroline Maguire had seven aces and added four kills and a pair of blocks to lead the Panthers. Maddy Kuzio had four aces and a pair of digs and Lauren McGrath had 10 assists and three aces for Franklin.

Canton, 3 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final – Canton got the sweep on the road 25-15, 25-14, 28-26 and clinched its sixth straight Davenport Division title and ninth straight Hockomock League title overall, dating back to before the division split. Olivia Devoe had yet another strong game on defense with 15 digs while Elizabeth Hamilton dominated offensively with 20 kills and three aces, also chipping in with 19 digs. Canton head coach Pat Cawley praised the efforts of Kaitlin McCarthy, Emma Gobbi and Emma Murphy for their strong play at the net. Cawley also noted great defensive efforts from Julia Panico, Cassie Loftus and Maria Mackie.
Mansfield, 3 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – Mansfield picked up the sweep on the road, 25-15, 25-22, 25-23. Jess Haradon had 18 digs and 11 service points for the Hornets while Cathryn Heavey had 35 assists and 10 service points. Sarah Mullahy had seven kills, seven blocks, and nine service points while Alli Belanger added eight digs and nine service points. For King Philip, Josie Rowean had 13 kills, Amelia Murphy added five kills, Emma Lopez had three kills and Micaela Murray finished with 10 digs.

Franklin, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Franklin’s Kevin Hall scored 10 minutes into the second half off an assist from Brian Czuba to break a scoreless stalemate. Farley Asmath doubled the lead off an assist from Austin Kent and Czuba then created an opportunity that resulted in an own goal.

King Philip, 1 @ Stoughton, 2 – Final – Sophomore Tyler Melo scored the game’s opening goal for the Black Knights and Loubensky Lucas added a second late in the half to double the lead. Head coach Aaron Salter said Josh Mitchell and Brian Peoples both played very well.
Girls Soccer
Foxboro, 2 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – For the second time in as many games, North Attleboro senior Hana Caster and sophomore Haley Guertin were the two primary players in three goals. Each Caster and Guertin scored twice with Guertin assisting on both of Caster’s goals. Guertin’s first goal was assisted by sister Grace Guertin.
Milford, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – Victoria Stowell scored two goals and had an assist for Franklin. Alexis Stowell, Jess Kroushl and Emily Mastaj each had goals for the Panthers and Megan Georges had a pair of assists. Brianna Braza and Rachel LeBlanc played well for the Hawks, according to head coach Jay Mastaj.
Stoughton, 3 @ King Philip, 2 – Final – Taryn Bates’ first career goal off an assist from Sarah Quattrucci proved to be the game winner for the Black Knights. Sam Tullis converted a penalty kick for Stoughton and Elizabeth Kashian scored the second goal for the Black Knights off an assist from Shanel Ford. Head coach Tara Daniels credited Samantha Tullis and Sarah Widrow with strong games on defense and said goalie Marissa Williams played outstanding. Rachel Hogan scored for KP to tie the game at one and Emma Corcoran gave KP its lone lead off a PK in the first half.

Taunton, 3 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Taunton picked up a 25-17, 25-17, 25-10 win on the road. Aimee Kistner had 19 service points, including five aces and a pair of kills, Emily Moor had 12 kills and four aces and Meghan Navarro played well with eight digs and three aces.

Franklin, 2 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final – Alex Sullivan gave Franklin the lead 10 minutes into the game and Dana Lewandowski doubled the lead with just 12 minutes left to give the Panthers a key win on the road. Head coach Lisa Cropper said Samantha Jones made four big saves on excellent scoring chances to get the shutout. With the win, Franklin qualified for the state tournament.

Milford, 0 @ Ashland, 3 – Final

North Attleboro, 4 vs. Durfee, 2 – Final
Taunton, 2 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Liana Duarte opened the scoring for the Tigers in the first half and then assisted on Kya Enos’ goal with just over a minute to play. Duarte’s opening goal was assisted by Abbey Kingman.

Stoughton, 4 @ Brockton, 0 – Final – Olivia Schlehuber and Mia Russell scored two goals apiece for the Black Knights.

Kent then found the back of the net in the second off off an assist from junior Cam LeBlanc. Henri Guilmette had the shutout in net for the Panthers.

Franklin, 5 vs. Dartmouth, 0 – Final – Emily Spath scored a pair of goals for the Panthers and Victoria Stowell had three assists in the non-league victory.
Stoughton, 0 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – Six different players registered a point for the Rocketeers, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime and never looked back. Hana Caster opened the scoring off an assists from Felicity Monfils. Shannon Kingsley then doubled the lead off an assist from Grace Guertin and Haley Guertin made it three off Caster’s pass. Grace Guertin scored a fourth goal in the second half off an assist from Lauren Dowd. Freshman Emma Noreck made her varsity debut and combined with Kiersten Bixby for the shutout in net.
Volleyball
Attleboro, 0 @ King Philip, 3 – Final – King Philip picked up a 25-12, 25-7, 25-12 sweep at home over Attleboro. Carly Adams had 12 service points in game alone to give the Warriors an early jump and Gwen Uyrus had 10 service points in game three, totaling seven aces for the match, to help the Warriors close. Head coach Kristen Geuss said Angela Vellante had strong defensive game.

Canton, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Canton swept the Scarlet Hawks 25-13, 25-13, 25-15. Elizabeth Hamilton led the Bulldogs with 13 kills and also had a strong game on defense. Head coach Pat Cawley said Olivia Devoe sparked the defense and “made many great plays.” Cawley also said Erika Lum and Kehla Minkin played well on defense and Rye Verille and Emma Murphy both blocked well.

Stoughton, 3 @ Foxboro, 1 – Final – Stoughton notched a 25-22, 25-20, 29-31, 25-23 win over division rival Foxboro. Stoughton junior Christina Gelin had 12 assists, 10 digs and eight service points and sophomore Valerie Whalen added 13 kills, five blocks, nine service points and four aces.
Franklin, 3 @ Taunton, 2 – Final – The Panthers won 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 15-25, 15-5. Aubrie Kutil led Franklin with 12 kills and Hannah Chace had seven. Elizabeth Neal led the team with 18 assists and Dayna McCue had 37 digs. Emily Moor led the Tigers with 16 kills and Tatum Speicher had 32 assists, two kills and seven digs. Libero Molly Sullivan had 13 digs and Alyssa Gibson added six kills for Taunton.

Attleboro, 0 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Senior Austin Botelho scored less than three minutes into the second half as Taunton picked up a big win against division rival Attleboro. Hasan Farahat set up Botelho for the lone goal of the game on a shot from 20 yards out. Marc DeSousa made eight saves in net including a save to protect the win with five minutes to play.
Canton, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final – Oliver Ames senior Chris Romero scored a pair of second half goals to help the Tigers continue their perfect start. Romero scored first off an assist from Keegan Nutt and then converted a chance from Max Ahearn.
Foxboro, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Devante Teixeira scored the opening goal in the 14th minute and then assisted on Foxboro’s third goal to Hussein Kafel, scored inside the first three minutes of the second half. Anthony Barreira converted a penalty kick in the 24th minute for Foxboro. Milford senior goalie Mike Da Silva made 11 saves in net.
Mansfield, 2 @ Franklin, 0 – Final – A pair of throw ins from senior captain Chris Elsner turned into a pair of goals for Mansfield in a big win on the road. Just three minutes into the game, Elsner’s throw found Jared Miller who found the back of the net. Midway through the second half Elsner found Charlie Rogers to double the lead. Michael Kirejczyk picked up his fourth shutout of the season. Head coach Steve Sheridan credited defenders Max Gurnon, Nick Hyland and Harry Braidt, along with Elsner, for strong games.
King Philip, 2 @ North Attleboro, 0 – Final – The Warriors used a pair of second half goals from senior captain Joe Kellett to pick up their third win of the season. Inside the first minute of the second half, Ryan Coulter’s cross was deflected by Larsen Keys to Kellett at the edge of the area and he buried it. Just before the midway point of the second half, Thomas Lugten cut back and found Kellett again at the top of the area and he converted again.

Stoughton, 1 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Senior Winston Kessah set up junior Loubensky Lucas for the game-winning goal inside the final five minutes. Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter called Lucas’ finish a “sublime long distance finish.” Salter also credited Tyler Melo for a strong game in the midfield and Goddy Frombe for a strong game in the back.
Girls Soccer
Taunton, 5 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Alana Vincent scored a pair of goals and added an assist for the Tigers. Sam Tichelaar also scored a pair of goals and Mariah O’Gara netted one. Taunton goalie Kayla Wentworth made seven saves in net for the shutout.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ Canton, 0 – Final – Oliver Ames junior Francesca Calabraro netted the lone goal of the game midway through the first half, converting after a through ball from junior Julia Roy. Sophomore Regan Benton and freshman Bethany Dunk combined for the shutout in goal. Head coach Britt Sellmayer said sophomore Jackie Mills and senior Erin Fitzgerald played well for the Tigers.

Milford, 0 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Riley Collins and Hannah Burns netted first half goals to lift the Warriors to a win.

Franklin, 3 @ Mansfield, 0 – Final – Bailey Knous scored four minutes into the game to give Franklin the lead. The score stayed the same until there was 10 minutes left when Jamie Dragsbaek volleyed in a second off a corner. In the final seconds, Victoria Stowell scored on a 30-yard free kick to make it 3-0.
North Attleboro, 7 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – Haley Guertin scored her second straight hat trick, scoring twice in the first half and adding a third in the second half. Hana Caster also netted a pair of first half goals and added two assists. Grace Guertin and Gabriela Versona each scored one.

Sharon, 3 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Alexandra Filipkwoski scored on a header off an Alex Rabb corner to open the score for the Eagles. Rabb also assisted on the first of Ally Steinberg’s two goals. Freshman goalie Lydia Chase made eight saves in her first varsity appearance. Shanel Ford netted the Black Knights’ lone goal while senior goalie Marissa Williams had 10 saves in net for Stoughton.
Volleyball
Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Dayna McCue had 12 digs and five aces, Beth Neal had 14 assists, six kills and a pair of aces and Aubrie Kutil had seven kills. Head coach Kate Horsmann said Rose Morrissette and Sam Campbell played well defensively.

Foxboro, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton bounced back into the win column with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-23 win over an upset-minded Foxboro squad. Elizabeth Hamilton led the Bulldogs with 13 kills, Rye Verille had 10 kills and a pair of block and Nicole Poole totaled 29 assists. Olivia Devoe continued her stellar play at the libero spot with 20 digs for Canton.

King Philip, 1 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Mansfield dropped the first set (19-25) but came back to win the next three 25-11, 25-17, 25-23. The Hornets’ offense was led by 10 kills from Sarah Mullahy and eight kills from Olivia Broyles. Colleen Riley had 14 serve receives to pace the defense. For King Philip, Gwen Uyrus led the Warriors with nine kills and three aces.

Milford, 3 @ Sharon, 1 – Final
North Attleboro, 2 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – It was a back and forth contest between the Tigers and the Rocketeers that Taunton was able to walk away from with a win (25-27, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, 15-7). Alyssa Gibson had nine kills and six blocks while Aimee Kistner played the role of spark plug with seven kills, six aces and three blocks. Taunton’s Tatum Speicher added 27 assists, four kills and a pair of aces in the win.
Oliver Ames, 2 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Senior middle blocker Bridgette Whalen had a strong all-around game for the Black Knights with 12 service points, 10 digs, eight blocks and eight aces. Senior outside hitter Ava Siegel had 23 digs, 15 serve receives and five kills and junior setter Christina Gelin had 10 service points and seven assists.

Attleboro, 3 @ Taunton, 2 – Final – Grace Mayer scored a pair of goals for the Bombardiers while Katie Patton netted a goal. Quincy Harding picked up a assists for Attleboro in the win. Attleboro goalie Isabelle Maragnano made five saves in net and Lacey Roy also made a big defense save.

Mansfield, 3 @ Franklin, 4 – Final – Freshman Annie Walsh scored what turned into the eventual game-winner 10 minutes into the second half for the Panthers. Walsh also had an assist on Franklin’s third goal, scored by Caroline Lounsbury with under five minutes to play in the first half. Freshman Cassi Roman and junior Dana Lewandowski also scored for Franklin while goalie Samantha Jones made 12 saves in net. Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said Kenzi Pleshaw played an outstanding game on defense.

Guertin Powers Rocketeers in Shootout With Taunton

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. – North Attleboro had dominated possession for much of the first half, had the vast majority of the chances, and at one point held a three-goal lead, but with the first half winding down Taunton had cut the lead to just one goal and had the momentum.

Just moments before the half ended, sophomore Felicity Monfils flicked a pass from midfield between a pair of defenders to allow classmate Haley Guertin to run on to it. Guertin held off the defenders and managed to slide her shot just inside the far post to restore a two-goal lead.

It was Guertin’s third goal of the first half and turned out to be the game-winner, as North Attleboro pulled out a 5-3 victory over the Tigers on Friday afternoon at Thomas Kelly Field.

The opening 20 minutes was all North Attleboro. The Rocketeers front three of Haley Guertin in the middle, Monfils on the right and Hana Caster on the left, with Grace Guertin stepping forward from midfield, overwhelmed the Tigers defense early in the game.

It was Monfils who opened the scoring when Caster created space on the left and cut the ball back into the box for Grace Guertin, whose shot was blocked into the path of Monfils. The sophomore took a touch and buried her shot past Taunton keeper Kayla Wentworth.

“Felicity being only a sophomore and being pretty small, she gets the job done,” said first-year North coach Glenn Pasquel. “We go over this stuff over and over in practice and they get it.”

The Rocketeers were swarming the Taunton defense. Haley Guertin stole the ball off the center back and had a shot from 20 yards but it snuck wide. Just a minute later and she had her first goal.

Wentworth went out to the edge of her box to challenge Caster. An attempted pass was blocked to Shannon Kingsley and she looped a ball back across goal toward the far post. It may have snuck in either way, but Guertin took no chances and nodded home from a yard out to make it 2-0.

As the half approached its midway point, Caster switched to the right and sent in a cross that eluded Wentworth and found Guertin all alone at the far post for another tap in.

“We came out a little flat,” said Taunton coach Edith Dixon. “They do have some really good strikers up front, they move around, technically they’re a very savvy team.”

Trailing by three goals with the game not even 20 minutes old, Taunton could have given up and the game could have gotten out of hand. Instead, the Tigers found a goal and some momentum.

Mariah O’Gara threw a warning shot when a ball bounced over the North defense on a goal kick and her shot just missed at the near post. A minute later and Taunton broke quickly again with Sam Tichelaar springing Alan Vincent in the right channel. Her shot was saved by Kiersten Bixby into the path of O’Gara whose rebound attempt was also blocked but who scored on the second attempt.

“They gave us some opportunities,” said Dixon. “We took advantage of several, but couldn’t quite string together another two or three.”

The goal sparked Taunton with some help from Wentworth on the other end, who made seven saves in the first half alone to keep North at bay.

Tichelaar gave Taunton even more reason for optimism late in the half when she stole the ball from Rachel LaBonte and raced towards goal. The sophomore gave Bixby absolutely no chance with a fantastic finish under the bar and suddenly it was 3-2.

“The thing we worry about is teams like that who pop the ball over the top and chase after it,” said Pasquel. “That’s not our game. Playing against teams like that, they’re very dangerous.”

If North was starting to get nervous, Haley Guertin ended the concern right before halftime with a side-foot finish inside the far post for her hat trick.

“She’s a player and she knows how to finish,” said Pasquel. “I always say that Haley is that type of girl that you could drop a cone 50 yards away and she’ll drop it on top of that cone.”

Just two minutes into the second half and Guertin turned provider as her cross from the left was met by Caster in the middle. The senior settled it spun to her right foot and lifted it over Wentworth to make it 5-2.

Pasquel said, “Hana has the speed and we’re working on the moves now. I tell her that she’s got the whole package and she’s just got to finish the ball.”

The second half featured far less North possession than the first and far less chances for either team. Taunton did manage a third goal in the 60th miniute on a ball that bounced several times on the right edge of the box that was chased down by O’Gara. She stepped past her defender, saw that Bixby was anticipating a cross and fired a shot in at the near post.

It would be one of the last clear-cut chances for either team in the game, as North Attleboro worked to just see out the result.

Regardless of the loss, Dixon saw a different attitude from her team as it battled back from the early deficit in each half.

“A couple of years ago,” she explained, “they would’ve just gone into their shell and this would’ve ended 6-0, 7-0…but they stood their ground and kind of crept back into it.”

“We didn’t get quite as many chances as we needed at the end, but for the most part the girls that we had stepped up and showed a lot of emotional maturity.”

North Attleboro, still in high from its first win at Oliver Ames in 13 years, will get its first look at the King Philip turf on Monday. Taunton will look to bounce back against Attleboro.
