Franklin Doubles Up On Brockton To Advance

FRANKLIN, Mass. – It only took three and a half minutes for #14 Franklin to get its first goal on Friday night at Pisini Field, and the Panthers never looked back en route to a 4-2 win over #19 Brockton in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.

Following a miscue by the Brockton goalie, the ball ended up at the feet of Miranda Smith and she capitalized, putting it in the back of the net to give Franklin a 1-0 lad. Ten minutes later, Anna Balkus scored off a feed from Molly Duncan to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage.

“The first half when the first group was in there, they moved the ball really well, and they had the defense moving and they made their own breaks,” Franklin head coach Tom Geysen said about Franklin’s quick start.

In the 28th minute, Brockton saw their first scoring chance of the game, but their shot off a free kick was saved by Cat Robbins, who had seven saves on the night for the Panthers.

In the 33rd minute, Emily Mastaj found Sydney St. Marie cutting to the net, and St. Marie buried her shot to put Franklin up 3-0. One of the keys for the Panthers was their crisp passing all night, which set up numerous scoring chances and helped them hold the possession advantage.

“[Moving the ball] was specifically what we were trying to do, to move the ball, to get the kids to move when they gave up the ball, and the constant movement with and without the ball is tough to cover if you’re doing it right, and in the first half I thought we did it really well,” Geysen added about his team’s ball movement.

In the second half, both teams saw scoring chances early, as Franklin’s attempt to extend their lead was denied on a save by Brockton goalkeeper Tory Viola-Laughery in the 43rd minute. Five minutes later Robbins was equal to the task, fully extending on a dive to make a save to keep the Boxers off the board. In the 52nd minute, Smith looked like she had her second goal of the night, but another beautiful save by Viola-Laughery kept the Brockton deficit at three goals.

Franklin finally broke through for their fourth goal in the 64th minute, as Duncan found Jess Kroushl streaking downfield, and Kroushl scored to put the Panthers up 4-0.

Just two minutes, Brockton got on the scoreboard when Madison Hendrigan capitalized on a penalty kick to cut Franklin’s lead to three goals. With the game winding down, senior Kyla Cullors scored for Brockton to make the score 4-2, and that’s where it stayed until the final whistle.

With the win, Franklin (10-7-2) moves on to play Hingham (16-1-1). The Harborwomen have won three straight D2 State titles, and are looking to go on a run in their first year as a D1 team. They come in on a 15-game point streak (14-0-1) in which they’re outscoring opponents 60-8.

“We’re going to have to play very, very well to have any opportunity to beat them, but we’ll show up and we’ll do what we need to do,” Geysen added about the Panther’s upcoming opponent.

Franklin and Hingham will play Sunday night at 6:00 PM in Hingham.

After a scoreless first half, sophomore Michael Russo set Halben up for the late winner.

King Philip, 0 @ Mansfield, 1 – Final – In a battle of two heavyweights, Mansfield edged King Philip to stay within one point of Oliver Ames in the hunt for the Kelley-Rex title. Senior Nick Wisnieski headed in a corner kick from Luke Savoie in the 56th minute for the lone tally. Nick Ferraz made five saves in net for Hornets.

North Attleboro, 3 @ Milford, 2 – Final – North Attleboro scored a pair of goals in the second half and held off a late push from the hosts to clinch its first-ever Davenport title, and first league title since 2007. Big Red took the lead in the 12th minute as Ryan Pasquel’s service was flicked by Gabe Pinhancos and then headed in by Zach Matracia. North made it 2-0 just eight minutes into the second half when Pinhancos converted at the near post on a service from Noah Barney. Milford cut the deficit to one 12 minutes later when Andre Oliveira got free and scored. But North responded five minutes later when Pinhancos volleyed in a header from Barney. Oliveira scored again on a rebound in the 76th minute.

Taunton, 2 @ Oliver Ames, 7 – Final – Oliver Ames celebrated senior night with seven goals from seven different seniors. OA went up 1-0 before Taunton tied it; OA extended its lead to 4-1 before Taunton found the back of the net again and then the hosts scored three straight. Nathaniel Cardoza scored once and had three assists in the win. James Gillespie, Michael Nikiciuk, Jack Galas, Mason Galbato, Brandin Osborne and Nick Zwerle each scored once. Chris Lawrence added three assists and Matthew Alvarado had one helper.

Stoughton, 2 @ Sharon, 3 – Final – Sharon overcame an early deficit and then broke a 2-2 game with a late goal to earn two points against Stoughton. Stoughton senior Tyler Melo scored on a free kick from distance but Sharon’s Tyler Goldstein nodded in a throw from Tyler Hippler in the 33rd minute to tie it. Andy Reyes-Jones put the Eagles ahead in the 36th minute but Stoughton’s Terry Lapomarede knotted the score in the 65th minute. Goldstein grabbed his second, and the game-winner, heading in a free kick from sophomore Michael Baur in the 70th minute.

Girls Soccer
Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Molly Duncan scored five minutes into the game off an Anna Balkus assist to put the Panthers ahead early. In the second half, Miranda Smith scored off a Duncan assist just two minutes after the restart and Calen Frongillo wrapped up the scoring from Emily Mastaj with 11 minutes to play. Franklin coach Tom Geysen said that all of the Panthers stepped up and “played really well,” despite the blustery conditions.

Foxboro, 1 @ Canton, 4 – Final – Canton scored three times in the second half to break open a tie game and earn the two points. Olivia Rodman continued her standout freshman season with a hat trick for the Bulldogs and Sarah Connolly added a 30-yard free kick in the win. Foxboro’s goal was scored by Jordyn Collins and Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup said her team struggled to get into its typical passing game in the wind.

Milford, 1 @ North Attleboro, 7 – Final North put in a stellar performance and Haley Guertin reached another career milestone in a big win. Guertin scored the game’s third goal for her 100th career point, making her only the second Rocketeers player to ever reach that mark. Haley Ferrin had a hat trick and Ashlyn Gaulin had a brace for North, while Rachel Labonte added the seventh. Gaulin added three assists, Leah Jette had two and Aine Mendonca and Guertin each had one apiece. Emma Noreck picked up the win in goal and North coach Bill Wallace said that Britta MacDonald and Brie Wescott “played inspired soccer.” Madeline Boyle scored the lone Milford goal.

Oliver Ames, 4 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Abigail Reardon and Anna Tempestoso each scored a pair of goals for OA in the win. Sophia Cox recorded a pair of assists and Emily Freeman had one.

Sharon, 0 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Stoughton coach Tara Daniels said that Gaby Diaz, Victoria Fallon, Sarina Hutchinson, and Nikki Anderson played well defensively to limit the Sharon strikers and goalie Emma Harrington earned the clean sheet. Daniels said, “Great game played by all.”

Mansfield, 3 @ King Philip, 1 – Final – Mansfield built a 1-0 lead at halftime and added two more in the second half to pick up a win on the road at KP. Jackson Murphy opened the scoring on an assist from Sean Lanzillo to put the Hornets ahead. Cullin Anastasia scored what proved to be the game-winner with a penalty kick in the second half and then added an insurance goal on an assist from Sam Hyland. Mansfield goalie Nick Ferraz made 11 saves in the win.

Milford, 1 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final – North Attleboro scored all three of its goals in the second half to pick up a key division win over Milford. Big Red went up 1-0 when Gabe Pinhancos scored just under eight minutes into the second half, running onto a flick from junior Joe Hilf and converting. Pinhancos made it 2-0 just three minutes later, heading in a cross from Zach Matracia. Milford cut the deficit in half in the 62nd minute when Anthony Salvador volleyed in a throw from Joey Madden. Nate Burns put the game away with his first career goal, scoring off a flick from Connor MacIver.

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Oliver Ames senior Matt Alvarado collected his third and fourth goals of the season, helping OA pick up two points on the road. Michael Nikiciuk netted his fourth goal of the season as well. Nathaniel Cardoza, Colin Evin and Cam Valla each had an assist in the win.

Sharon, 4 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Sharon had four different goal scorers in the win on the road. Tyler Hippler, Andrew Reyes-Jones, Tyler Goldstein and Michael Baur each found the back of the net for the Eagles.

Girls Soccer
Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – Franklin scored four times in the opening half hour to break the game wide open. Emily Mastaj, Halle Atkinson, Olivia Dellorco, and Sarah Yelle scored the goals for the Panthers before halftime and Molly Duncan added a fifth with five minutes left to play. Julia Hayes netted the lone goal for Attleboro. Breanna Atwood made five saves for the Panthers and Ashley Macia made five for the Bombardiers.

Canton, 1 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Katelyn Mollica scored what turned out to be the game-winner with 12 minutes remaining to extend Foxboro’s win streak to five games. Shaina Abbott had the opening goal on a volley from a Mackenzie Fraser assist before Mollica doubled the lead. Canton cut the lead to one with a late goal, but the Warriors held on for the win. Jamie DeVellis made eight saves to earn the win in goal.

King Philip, 2 @ Mansfield, 1 – Final – Avery Snead scored one and set up the other to lift KP to a win over the defending Kelley-Rex champs and put the Warriors into a tie atop the standings. Chloe Layne opened the scoring off a Snead assist in the first half, firing a low shot into the corner. Kerina Geminiani equalized for the Hornets with a 25-yard free kick that sent the game into halftime 1-1. Snead scored the game-winner with 11 minutes remaining, sending her shot just past the outstretched arms of the Mansfield keeper. KP coach Gary Pichel credited his “great defensive line” for helping the Warriors earn the two points.

North Attleboro, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final – North Attleboro scored all three of its goals inside the first half hour of the match and played a strong defensive game to earn the shutout. Ashlyn Gaulin opened the scoring in the 15th minute, converting a feed from Haley Guertin to make it 1-0. Guertin then doubled the lead off an assist from Kayla Pasquel before Emma Gaulin made it 3-0 in the 30th minute, with Leah Jette getting the assist. Emma Noreck made six saves for North to earn the shutout. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj said Briana Braza played well defensively for the Scarlet Hawks.

Taunton, 1 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final – OA scored a pair of second half goals to come back from a goal down and pull out the win. Erin Holmberg scored off a through ball from Anna Tempestoso in the first minute after the break and Gabrielle McLaughlin netted the winner on an assist from Maeve Hogan. Samantha Tichelaar scored the lone goal of the game for Taunton in the opening minute. Alex Wapenski had the assist for Taunton.

Stoughton, 2 @ Sharon, 6 – Final – Ally Filipkowski and Fallon Pfeifer both scored hat tricks for the Eagles and Filipkowski added an assist as well. Bridget McManus and Marika Fillon also had assists for Sharon. Stoughton got goals from Nicole Weir (off a cross from Brigid Pearl) and Mia Greene.

Attleboro, 197 @ North Attleboro, 198 – Final (5 cards) – It came down to a fifth card tiebreaker after rivals Attleboro and North Attleboro were knotted at 154. Kyle DelSignore led the Bombardiers with a par round of 35 while Corey McKenna carded a 38. Dylan Kane led North Attleboro, carding a 37 at the middle course of Heather Hill.

Milford, 165 @ Canton, 156 – Final – Canton’s Jack Goyetch carded a round of 37 to earn match medalist honors and help the Bulldogs pick up another key division win. Joey Vaughan finished with a 38 and Bubba McNeice chipped in with a round of 40. Zach Tammaro and Andrew Fauerbach each shot 39 for the Scarlet Hawks.

2017 Kelley-Rex Girls Soccer Preview

Attleboro

2016 Record: 2-15-1
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Steve Santos

Goal scoring has been the biggest issue for the Bombardiers in the past few seasons, including a league-low eight in 2016, but head coach Steve Santos is confident that this year’s squad has the speed and experience to take advantage of counter attacks and he expects Attleboro to create a lot more scoring chances this fall.

While goal scoring is a focus of the preseason work, it is at the back that Attleboro boasts the most experience with the entire back line returning. Senior Jordyn Forte is the leader at the back, using her “good soccer IQ,” according to Santos, to keep things calm and making the right plays. She is joined in the defense by fellow seniors Morgan Laplume and Graycen Cassidy. In goal, Madison Brown returns to give Attleboro a solid presence to control the penalty box.

Turning that defense into attack will be the responsibility of senior midfielder Julia Hayes, who will be a key player in the center of the pitch. Junior Ashley Lauzier and senior Kara Thornton will be hoping to take advantage of the opportunities that are created. Santos is also excited about the youth coming into the program with three freshman on the varsity roster to start, including Riley Harnois, who will help out in the attack.

“We have a little more speed this year,” said Santos, “and we’ve been generating a little more in the transition. This year I can rest [the starters], bring people off the bench and the pace doesn’t drop off. They’re great kids, they work hard, and they fight for the team every day.”

Franklin

2015 Record: 10-3-5
2015 Finish: Reached D1 South First Round

After six straight league titles, Franklin had an atypical season in 2016. The Panthers only lost three times all season, but drew five times, struggling to find consistent goal scoring that would turn a tie into a win. Franklin only allowed nine goals, but only scored 36, which was 20 goals fewer than league champ Mansfield. This year, head coach Tom Geysen is working on a new formation to get the best out of his attacking options with the goal of returning to the top of the league standings.

The Panthers return leading scorer Miranda Smith and the senior takes advantage of her size to create scoring opportunities in the box. Junior Halle Atkinson is back for her third year on the varsity and gives Franklin speed on the wings and is an accurate crosser of the ball to give Smith plenty of chances. Molly Duncan and Ellie Teixeira are also back and will give the Panthers a consistent presence in the center of midfield, while Emily Mastaj is another option on the wing.

The key to Franklin’s defense this season will be senior goalie Cat Robbins. Stepping in between the posts last year, Robbins turned in an impressive year and quickly became one of the top goalies in the league. This year, there will be several new faces and younger players that will be counted on to step up on the defensive side of the ball, including senior Molly O’Reilly and juniors Grace Gallo and Madison Stewart.

Geysen noted that there are several underclassmen that could step in during the season to add to the Panthers’ depth. He added, “We need to find the right mix. If we can patch things together and they can gain experience over the course of the season I’m confident that we will get better.”

King Philip

2016 Record: 12-8-2
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South Quarterfinal

It was a great turnaround for King Philip from 2015 to 2016. The Warriors were snakebitten by injuries the year before, losing almost an entire starting 11 many of them to long-term injuries, but last year a large and talented freshman class stepped in to supplement the players who were back healthy helping the program jump from just two wins to 12 last fall.

Expectations are even higher for the Warriors this year, as that freshman group gained a year of experience playing in the Hock. The sophomores are led by Avery Snead, last year’s Underclassman of the Year, who excelled up front or in the midfield and sealed the team’s playoff victory over Mansfield with an overtime headed winner. Chloe Layne showed off silky skills and finishing ability in the box and Olivia Berry stepped right into the heart of the defense and showed that she belonged.

It is not all about the underclassmen. Senior Emma Corcoran is back for another year at the heart of the defense and as the primary dead ball specialist, being named an Eastern Mass. All-Star in 2016. Senior Emma Durant has grown into the role of starting keeper and was a solid and steady presence between the posts last season. Senior Julian Massarone is a three-year varsity player and will be one of the primary playmakers in the center of the pitch.

“Overall, we made great strides in improving our game last year,” said KP coach Gary Pichel. “We want to continue to become more advanced in all three phases of our game. Last year, we turned a corner. This year, we want to move full speed ahead and compete hard against all of our opponents in the Hock!”

Mansfield

2016 Record: 14-1-4 (Kelley-Rex Division Champions)
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South First Round

Mansfield is coming off the program’s best ever season. The Hornets set records for wins, points, goals scored and claimed their first ever league title, finishing the regular season unbeaten. An overtime loss in the first round of the playoffs to league rival KP was a tough finish to 2016 and trying to replace the production of HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Hannah Reiter will be a challenge, but the Hornets return a ton of talent to make a run at another title.

Juniors Melissa Reef (an Eastern Mass. All-Star last season) and Bryn Anderson will be back in the midfield this fall, breaking up opponents’ attacks and pushing Mansfield into the attack. Their ability to cover a lot of ground in the center of the pitch and pick out the right pass to start the transition will be key. Classmate Stephanie Kemp will be back at the top of the attack, after scoring nine goals as a sophomore. Junior Emily Vigeant will lead an experienced defensive unit and also gives the Hornets a dangerous weapon from set pieces.

Mansfield coach Kevin Smith likes has a lot of players that he can call on this season. In the attack, Kemp will be joined by Sydney Mulkern, Allee Bezeau, Amanda Mangano, Cassidy MacMahon, and Emma Oldow. Defensively, the Hornets will turn to Mikaela Maughn, Kerina Geminiani, Erin Daniel and goalkeeper Lauren Whitman.

Smith said, “We will be hoping to spread out the offense amongst multiple attackers and relying on the experience of 13 juniors and three seniors who were on varsity last year to fill the roles of the five starters who graduated.”

Oliver Ames

2016 Record: 14-3-2 (Kelley-Rex Division Champions)
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South Semifinal

Last fall, Oliver Ames made the switch from the Davenport to the Kelley-Rex division, but it had little effect on the success of the program. The Tigers shared the league title with Mansfield, the fourth title in a row for OA and seventh since 2007. That run of success may be tough to keep going this year, as the Tigers graduated 10 seniors and are battling injuries to start 2017.

Losing players like Francesca Calabraro (who was injured midway through last season) and Kiana Lozzi is tough enough, but the Tigers lost almost an entire starting 11. To make matters worse, the strong central defensive pairing of Emily Freeman (knee) and Zoe Chazan (academy) are both missing to start the season. Senior goalie Regan Benton is back and will give the Tigers one of the best goalies in the league and in Eastern Mass. to backstop the rebuilt defense.

Offensively, the Tigers have been known for pace and strength, particularly on set pieces, and this year will count on three senior to try and provide consistent scoring opportunities. The pacy group of Abby Reardon, Jackie Mills, Annabella Walsh will be the primary focus of the attack. There will be a lot of new faces on the pitch this season, trying to keep the legacy of OA success going for another fall.

“We have quite a few players who had limited minutes last year,” said OA coach Britt Sellmayer, “but they practiced against some good players every day. If we can stay healthy I feel confident.”

Taunton

2015 Record: 3-14-2
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs

It has been a roller coaster ride for the Tigers over the past few seasons under head coach Edith Dixon. In 2015, Taunton reached the postseason for the first time in program history and made it count by beating Wellesley on the road in the opening round and gave top seed Bishop Feehan a tough game in the second round. But, after losing a number of players to graduation, Taunton won only three games last season and are looking to bounce back behind a young roster in 2017.

The key for the Tigers is senior Samantha Tichelaar, who is coming off a league all-star and HockomockSports.com Best XI season, and gives Taunton speed, control, and leadership either as a forward or dropping deep into the midfield. Her versatility opens opportunities for her teammates. Classmate Kayla Felix will be the leader at the back for the Tigers, adding aggressiveness to the defense from her sweeper position.

Numbers are good for the program overall and Dixon expects that the younger players, including a strong crop of freshman and even eighth graders could make an impact on the varsity as the season goes along. She said that many of the younger players are “ahead of their age performance-wise.”

Dixon added, “Some of our younger players are going to step up and change how we play, but our upperclassman and seniors will remain the core of our team. I believe that their leadership and team-first mentality will push us to do well this year and set the program up for long-term success as the underclassmen mature.”

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Franklin faced perennial Div. 2 power Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon and it started well for the Panthers, who hit the bar and forced four saves from the NDA keeper in the opening 40 minutes, but the offense stalled after the break.

In the second half, the Cougars had an opportunity to hand Franklin just its third loss of the season but standing in the way was Catherine Robbins. The junior keeper stopped a pair of breakaways 15 minutes into the second half that preserved another clean sheet and grabbed Franklin a point in a 0-0 draw at Pisini Field.

“She’s been solid the whole year long,” said Franklin coach Tom Geysen of Robbins, who took over in net after the graudation of four-year starter Dani Lonati. “She’s done everything we’ve asked her to do. There isn’t anything more that she could have done than she’s already done.”

The Panthers were struggling to get anything going offensively in the second half, losing the ball in midfield and allowing the Cougars to push forward in the attack. In the 54th minute a bad bounce off the turf skipped over the head of Abigail Gipson and allowed Emma Tucker to get in alone on Robbins but the keeper stood tall and got two hands to the shot.

Franklin failed to clear the rebound and it was intercepted by Shannon LeVangie who also had a one-on-one with Robbins. The striker opened up her foot and tried to slide it past the keeper to the far post, but Robbins managed to drag her foot and get a toe on the shot to direct it around the post.

That would be the only chance of note for either team until the final eight minutes of the game. When asked about the struggles in the second half, Geysen replied, “The same thing happened the other day against KP when we were on that end of the field. I don’t know.”

He continued, “I don’t know if psychologically…I really don’t know. When we start watching every ball bounce then there’s something wrong. No matter what I said, they just weren’t reacting.”

Franklin tried to snag the full points with a flourish at the end of the game. Playing Molly Duncan up top as a focal point and with Halle Atkinson and Emily Mastaj running the wings, the Panthers went direct with balls over the top and in behind the NDA back line. It worked to create a few chances.

“In the last seven or eight years we were pretty to watch because we could move the ball,” explained Geysen. “We’re ugly as sin now. We can’t really move the ball very well, so we have to put the ball over the top.”

Mastaj had the best chance to steal the win when she got free on the edge of the six-yard-box to get a left-foot to Atkinson’s cutback from the byline, but the shot was straight at the NDA keeper.

Two minutes later, Franklin had another opportunity after good combination play between Jamie Dragsbaek and Grace Gallo freed up Sabrina Masters but her shot smacked off the football goalposts above the net.

“We played three games last week that were all physical games, but that’s just an excuse,” said Geysen about the Panthers inability to get going in the second half.

The first half was a very different game, as Franklin had several chances to take the lead and its physical play in the midfield took control of the matchup.

Dragsbaek had the first chance off a feed from Duncan but her lofted shot came back off the crossbar inside the opening 10 minutes. In the 13th minute, right back Nadia Havens put a 30-yard free kick on target and forced a diving save from the NDA keeper. Havens would also have a chance off a corner at the half-hour mark but her header flashed inches wide of the post.

Duncan was the primary outlet for the Panthers and she had a snap shot on the turn that was again saved by a diving NDA keeper and the rebound fell to Mastaj but she was unable to turn it in. Mastaj would get another chance when she outmuscled the NDA defender to get to Meghan Doherty’s through ball but the shot was saved.

Franklin finishes the regular season at 10-2-5 and will not wait the seedings for the Div. 1 South tournament that will come out next week.

Oliver Ames, 2 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – James Gillespie and Thomas McCormick each scored to lead the Tigers to their third straight win. Nathaniel Cardoza had the assist on Gillespie’s goal while Jack Sheldon set up McCormick’s tally.

Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 7 – Final – Emily Mastaj and Calen Frongillo each had two goals and an assist for the Panthers. Molly Duncan added a goal and an assist for Franklin, while Nadia Havens and Ellie Teixeira both scored goals. Miranda Smith and Jamie Dragsbaek also had assists.

Canton, 2 @ Foxboro, 3 – Final – Kristen Bortolotti scored a pair of goals for the Warriors who rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pick up the win. Kendra Wentling’s first goal of the season was the game-winner and Lily Sykes recorded assists on all three goals.

King Philip, 0 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Hannah Reiter recorded a goal and an assist, as the Hornets scored twice in the first half to stay within a point of league leading OA. Reiter scrambled home a goal from a corner with Melissa Reef getting the assist and then her shot was saved into the path of Cassidy McMahon who knocked it in for a 2-0 lead. Emily Gaumond made three saves for the Hornets and Emma Durant made seven saves for the Warriors.

North Attleboro, 4 @ Milford, 1 – Final – With the win, the Rocketeers clinched the Davenport division title, which is the first in program history. North Attleboro scored once in the first half but added three more in the second stanza. Ashlyn Gaulin opened the scoring for North, converting a pass from Haley Guertin. Emma Gaulin scored the next two goals for Big Red, finishing off passes from Guertin and Emily Scrhomm. Grace McGoldrick capped North’s scoring off an assist from Julia Tolfa. North head coach Bill Wallace said Rachel LaBonte, Emily Chiasson and Sam Hawkins all played great in the back. Maggie Boyle scored the lone goal for Milford on an assist by Julianna France. Milford coach Jay Mastaj said that Nicole Dahlgren played well defensively.

Canton, 0 @ Notre Dame Academy, 3 – Final – The Canton Bulldogs gave the defending State Champions a run for their money but ultimately fell 21-25, 18-25, 21-25. “They were definitely the hardest hitters we’ve seen this year,” head coach Pat Cawley said of the undefeated Cougars. Erika Lum played good defense leading Canton with 16 digs (along with three kills) and Julia Panico added 11 digs. Cawley had high praise for setter Nicole Poole – “she was awesome, making something out everything no matter where the pass.” – finishing with 18 assists and two kills. Casey Shea had a big night on offense with seven kills and no errors and added four blocks while Emma Murphy had three blocks and three kills.

Franklin, 3 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Franklin middles Meaghan Maguire and Maggie Doyle “were dominant at the net” according to Panther head coach Kate Horsmann. Maguire registered a pair of kills and five blocks while Doyle had two aces and three blocks. Erin Skidmore had four aces, 16 service points, eight kills and four digs for the Panthers while Ellie Wisniewski chipped in with five kills and Maddie Kuzio had 18 digs and an ace.

Attleboro, 0 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final

Franklin, 2 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Franklin senior Dana Lewandowski netted what turned out to be the game winner just five minutes into the first half as the Panthers picked up their seventh win of the season. Sophomore Annie Walsh scored with just under three minutes remaining to ice the game for Franklin. Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said Kate Morse “did an outstanding job in the midfield” for the Panthers.

Taunton, 0 @ Stoughton, 4 – Final – Olivia Schlehuber led Stoughton’s offense, scoring a pair of goals in the win. Julia Russell and Kelli Joyce scored each scored once for the Black Knights. Gianna Barbosa and Meghan McSweeney combined for the shutout in goal.

Oliver Ames, 157 @ Franklin, 166 – Final – Oliver Ames clinched the Kelley-Rex title outright with a win over Franklin at Franklin Country Club. The win marks Oliver Ames’ fourth straight outright league title and fifth straight overall. Brady Allbritton and Nick Lombardi both shot 37 to lead the Tigers. Matt D’Errico carded a 40 for the Panthers and Bryan Woelfel finished with a 41.

Mansfield, 173 @ Sharon, 171 – Final – Sam Fritz had the low score for Sharon with a 41, helping the Eagles edge Mansfield at Spring Valley Country Club. Jason Hindman was the match medalist, shooting a one over 37 for the Hornets.

Stoughton, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Franklin built a two goal lead in the first half but the Black Knights stormed back with three unanswered goals to grab the win. Farley Asmath and Nitin Chaudury netted goals off assists from Liam Kapples to put the hosts up 2-0. Stoughton answered as Noah Schulze scored on a free kick from 30 yards out and then tied the game before the break on Tyler Melo’s strike from outside the area. The Black Knights netted the game-winner with Melo finishing off a cross from Jordan Asnes. Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter said, “It was an excellent team performance today from every player.” Salter had specific praise for his back line as well as Melo and junior Brian Peoples.

Girls Soccer
Attleboro, 0 @ Milford, 1 – Final – Milford senior Sydney Morrison netted the lone goal of the game off an assist from Kristen Franzini to help the Scarlet Hawks edge Attleboro. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj said Maggie Boyle and Ashleigh Starks both played well for the Scarlet Hawks.

Mansfield, 2 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final – Hannah Reiter scored both goals for the Hornets, including the winner on a header off an Emily Vigeant corner with eight minutes remaining. Stephanie Kemp assisted the first Mansfield goal. Emily Schromm scored North Attleboro’s goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the second half off an assist from Haley Guertin. North interim head coach Bill Wallace said Aine Mendonca played well for the Rocketeers.

King Philip, 2 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Avery Snead (from Maddie Smith) and Abby Baker scored the goals for the Warriors. Ally Filipkowski scored the goal for the Eagles off an assist by Alex Rabb.

Canton, 3 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Canton picked up the win 25-13, 25-9, 25-15 in what head coach Pat Cawley called a “great team effort.” Nicole Poole controlled the offense skillfully, dishing out 27 assists and adding two kills and two aces. Hannah Jerrier had a 10 kills with no errors, hitting an impressive .435. Casey Shea added seven kills with just one error, hitting .545. Julia Panico was “outstanding” in the back row according to Cawley, finishing with 20 digs. Erika Lum, Maria Mackie and Emily Lynch combined for 33 digs for the Bulldogs.

Foxboro, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final

North Attleboro, 1 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Mansfield notched a 25-13, 25-17, 19-25, 25-21 win at home over the Rocketeers. Meg Hill led the Hornets with 10 kills and six blocks, Olivia Broyles had eight blocks and played strong defense. Julia Harrison had seven kills, Jess Haradon added 23 digs and Chloe Peters had 33 assists and 14 service points.

Sharon, 0 @ King Philip, 3 – Final – King Philip earned the sweep on the road with a 26-24, 25-18, 25-19. Sydney Phillips led KP with 16 kills and 14 service points, Carly Adams added 18 service points and 22 assists, Amanda Loewen chipped in with eight digs, Liv Balduf had four kills and nine service points and Angela Vellante added 15 service points and three digs.

Stoughton, 1 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Lauren McGrath helped set Franklin up for victory, notching 33 assists along with seven digs and three aces to lead the Panthers. Erin Skidmore had 15 kills and 11 digs, Maddie Kuzio had 21 digs and three aces, Lindsay McGowan contributed with seven kills, four digs, three aces and Meaghan Maguire finished with eight blocks and five kills for Franklin. For Stoughton, Riley Bagley had 43 digs while Val Whalen added 17 kills and sophomore Molly Turner had 20 assists.

Mansfield, 173 @ King Philip, 155 – Final – King Philip’s Danny McLaughlin earned match medalist honors, shooting a low round of 37 to lead the Warriors. Senior Jack Citarell finished with a 40 for the Warriors but picked up birdies on both the fifth and sixth hole to help KP. Sebastian Ladoulis and Matt Stanton both shot 39 for KP. Jason Hindman led Mansfield with a 39.

Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – Ahijah Joseph gave Attleboro the lead with an 18th minute goal, an advantage the Bombardiers took into the halftime break. Franklin senior Hatim Brahimi found the equalizer in the 69th minute to level the scoring.

Canton, 3 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Canton sophomore Paolo Ruggeri scored in the final minutes of the came to complete the Bulldogs’ comeback. Foxboro’s Anthony Barreira and Jeff Melo scored goals in the first half as the Warriors took a 2-0 lead into halftime. But Canton senior Ben Waterhouse cut into the lead with a goal in the 52nd minute and sophomore Paul Corcoran tied the game in the 55th minute. Ruggeri was able to convert with under two minutes to play for the game winner.

King Philip, 2 @ Mansfield, 0 – Final – Sophomore Tony Bozza netted his first career goal in the opening minutes of the contest off an assist from Thomas Lugten and Lugten doubled the lead before the halfway mark of the first half to lead King Philip. Bozza used a one time finish off a pass from Lugten to put KP up 1-0 in the 2nd minute. Lugten then took a flick from Colby Koch and tucked his chance into the net from inside the area. KP head coach Nick Gale said his back four of Jack Bush, Cam Mullins, Ryan Coulter and Larsen Keys had a strong defensive game in front of goalie Eli O’Neill, who had a strong game against Mansfield’s set pieces.

North Attleboro, 0 @ Milford, 2 – Final – Pedro Sampaio netted a pair of second half goals to lead the Scarlet Hawks to their second straight win. Sampaio converted a penalty kick to put Milford up 1-0 and then carried possession across the edge of the area before firing in his second of the game.

Stoughton, 2 @ Sharon, 4 – Final – Sharon cashed in on a pair of corner kicks to build a 2-0 lead at halftime and converted on a free kick for a 3-0 advantage early in the second half. Andrew Reyes Jones opened the scoring, converting a corner from Michael Baur. Jeffrey Gao doubled the lead, finishing off another corner from Baur. Ben Stamm headed home a free kick from Ian Camilli to make it 3-0. Stoughton responded with a pair of goals with sophomore Fabio Ponce De Leon finishing a lofted pass from Tyler Melo coming first and Jordan Asnes finishing a cross from Goddy Fombe to make it 3-2. Camilli iced the game with his second point of the game with a strike from just outside the area to cap the scoring.

Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Miranda Smith scored twice and assisted on the third goal for the Panthers. Jess Kroushl added a goal and an assist and Emily Mastaj had an assist for Franklin.

Foxboro, 0 @ Canton, 2 – Final

Mansfield, 5 @ King Philip, 1 – Final – Emma Oldow scored once and had two assists, Allee Bezeau netted a pair of goals and Emma Goulet and Steph Kemp each scored once and had an assist in Mansfield’s win. Avery Snead scored for King Philip.

Milford, 1 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final – Milford converted a corner kick to pick up a tie on the road at North Attleboro. Nicole Dahlgren scored off of Maddie Boyle’s corner for the Scarlet Hawks. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj praised the two-way play of Ashleigh Starks and Maggie Boyle.

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Anna Tempestoso, Kiana Lozzi and Abby Reardon were the goal scorers for OA and Zoe Chazon added two assists for the Tigers. Samantha Tichelaar scored for Taunton.

Sharon, 11 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Sharon’s Alex Rabb registered her third hat trick of the season to lead the Eagles while Ally Filipkowski, Jessie Tarnoff and Amanda Klayman each scored two goals apiece. Ally Steinberg and Maxine Gordon each scored once for Sharon.

Volleyball
Mansfield, 3 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final – Mansfield picked up a 25-16, 20-25, 28-26, 25-19 win on the road at Oliver Ames. Olivia Broyles had nine blocks and four kills for the Hornets while Chloe Peters added 20 service points and Jess Haradon and Jacey Anderson combined for 20 digs. Oliver Ames’ Bridget McCarthy had 27 assists and five aces and Maya Fetcho added 11 kills.

Milford, 3 @ Sharon, 2 – Final – Sharon junior Jess Allan led the Eagles’ offense with nine kills and Cori Jermyn added seven kills.

Attleboro, 3 @ Taunton, 0 – Final

Stoughton, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Maggie Malloy accounted for all of the scoring in the game, scoring a hat trick to lead the Bulldogs.

North Attleboro, 0 @ Foxboro, 1 – Final – Jaclyn Brion scored the lone goal of the game with eight minutes remaining to earn Foxboro’s fifth straight victory.

Sharon, 181 @ Stoughton, 192 – Final – Max Avratin was the match medalist, shooting a low-round of 44 to lead Sharon. Cam Doherty and Zach Gay led Stoughton, both shooting a round of 47.

Taunton, 191 @ Milford, 154 – Final – Three Milford golfers broke 40 on the day to pace the Scarlet Hawks to the win. Ryan Tomaso carded a low round of 35 while Anthony Arcudi shot 38 and Tylor Renaud carded a round of 39.

Canton, 153 @ North Attleboro, 149 – Final – Four different golfers shot under 40 for the Rocketeers to edge Canton in a key Davenport division showdown. Robbie Congdon shot a 36, David Colasanti shot a 37 and Dylan Kane and Tyler Sinacola both shot 38 in the win. Canton’s Matt Minichiello was the match medalist, carding a low round of 35.

Franklin Pulls Away in Second Half to Hold Off Taunton

FRANKLIN, Mass. – On Thursday afternoon at Pisini Field, the Franklin Panthers utilized a three-goal second half to pull away for a 4-0 win over Taunton.

The first half was tough for both teams as they both struggled to find their footing. Franklin had the first good look of the half when an Emily Mastaj shot off of a Franklin corner in the 12th minute was stopped on a kick save by Taunton goalie Grace Pimenta. Another Pimenta save on a Miranda Smith shot in the 16th minute kept the game scoreless.

Franklin finally broke through in the 27th minute when senior Kathryn Noon found Smith, who converted a header in traffic, to give Franklin the first score and a 1-0 lead.

Taunton came fighting back In the 34th minute with their first scoring chance when junior Samantha Tichelaar’sshot off of a corner was saved by Franklin goalie Cat Robbins. In the 39th minute, Taunton again tested Franklin when Tichelaar found herself all alone on a breakaway, but a phenomenal diving save by Robbins preserved the Franklin lead.

The remainder of the first half and the beginning of the second half was a possession battle at midfield, as neither team could generate any scoring chances. In the 56th minute, a feed from Calen Frongillo led to a Halle Atkinson breakaway goal, which put Franklin up 2-0.

With the momentum now in its favor, Franklin capitalized just one minute later and it was Atkinson leading the way again, as her cross was finished off by Jess Kroushl, putting Franklin up 3-0.

In the second half, Franklin’s change in play was largely thanks to their improved passing.

“In the first half, we spent as much time passing to them as we did to each other. In the second half, when the kids started to take space before trying to give up the ball, making the defender commit to them, they had opportunities to pass to each other, and it opened up the field,” Franklin coach Tom Geysen said.

One of the keys for Franklin was a strong defensive effort, as they limited Taunton’s opportunities, especially in the second half. Seniors Abigail Gipson and Noon were especially important for Franklin, as they prevented Taunton from getting deep in Franklin territory by forcing turnovers.

The Tigers’ best chance to score in the second half came in the 62nd minute, when a shot of a corner was deflected away and back into Franklin territory.

Franklin’s final tally came in the 72nd minute, when Mastaj found an open Ellie Teixeira, whose shot found the top corner of the net, giving Franklin a 4-0 lead

Franklin (3-1-1) will look to continue its four-game unbeaten streak on Monday at home when it takes on undefeated Mansfield. Taunton (0-5-2) returns home on Monday, where the Tigers look to pick up their first win against King Philip.
