2020 Hockomock Girls Soccer Players to Watch

Dani Atherton, Sophomore – Milford

Milford gave Foxboro a push for the Davenport title last season and, although the Hawks graduated several important players in the midfield, sophomore Dani Atherton’s stellar rookie campaign gives hope that there is enough talent coming back to be a threat in the Kelley-Rex this year. Atherton exploded onto the scene as a dynamic playmaker, scoring nine goals and recording six assists as a freshman. She is a skillful player, capable of making dangerous dribbles to get the defense off-balance, and is a willing runner to chase every pass into the channels and her markers always needed to be aware of where she is. Atherton can also drop into the midfield and give Milford more playmaking in the center of the pitch or on the wings. As she becomes more accustomed to the high pace of Hock play, Atherton has the potential to unlock defenses and be the key to Milford’s quick transitions into the attack.

Jordyn Collins, Senior – Foxboro

It is hard to keep this Foxboro team from finding the back of the net and one of the primary reasons for that is Jordyn Collins. The senior forward and Bryant University-commit is one of the league’s fastest players and has been leaving defenders in her wake for three seasons. Collins scored 23 goals and added three assists last year, helping Foxboro to the Davenport division crown and she has added a more consistent finishing touch to the physical gifts that has made her hard to contain for even the league’s stingiest defenses. Strong on the ball and with quick feet, Collins can keep defenders off-balance, knowing if she gets an inch then she could be behind them and on goal in a flash. Collins has also developed an awareness of where the spaces are to make runs in behind, taking advantage of the channels and a blossoming partnership with midfielder, and fellow Player to Watch, Kailee McCabe to create chances on the break or against packed defenses. With Collins leading the line, Foxboro will be the favorite to retain the league title this fall.

Elisa Diletizia, Senior – Canton

It will certainly help Canton’s new coaching staff to know that it has firepower up front to cause problems for opponents. One of the dynamic playmakers that the Bulldogs will count on this season is senior forward Elisa Diletizia, who scored 16 goals and had four assists to help Canton reach the Div. 2 South semifinal last year. Quick and with loads of skill on the ball and the capability of playing on the shoulder of the last defender or dropping deep to get involved in the attack, Diletizia pops up in different spaces and is hard to mark with one defender. She also needs to be kept track of no matter how far out because she can find the back of the net from distance and from tough angles, making her a constant threat. The combination of Diletizia and Providence College-bound classmate Olivia Rodman is going to keep defenses on their toes and could make Canton one of the top scoring teams in the league this fall.







Briley Harnois, Senior – Attleboro

Speed is an important characteristic for a forward, but there also needs to be a tenacity to chase down passes, put defenders under constant pressure, and keep your team pushing forward. Briley Harnois gives Attleboro the perfect player to defend from the front and set the tone from an attitude standpoint. The senior forward is a thorn in the side of opposing defenses. Her quickness means any ball over the top is a potential opportunity and her willingness to get into physical battles with bigger defenders means that there isn’t a moment to rest. Harnois scored 10 goals last season and she is the perfect forward for Attleboro’s counter-attacking style, finding the seams to run into and also dropping back to combine with classmate Isabella Salviati. With a senior-laden roster, Attleboro will be a tough test for every team in the Kelley-Rex this fall and Harnois is emblematic of their combination of skill and attitude of not backing down from a challenge.

Mackenzie Manning, Senior – Stoughton

Stoughton made significant improvements last year, especially in the attack, as the Black Knights scored 34 goals as a team, three times more than the previous season. One of the constants for Stoughton is Mackenzie Manning, who has been the team’s leading scorer for each of her three years on varsity. Last year, the playmaker scored 11 goals and added three assists switching between attacking midfield and forward roles. She has quick feet and great vision to find the right pass to unleash the Stoughton forwards and her work rate, whether up top or in the middle of the pitch, pushes her teammates to match that intensity. Manning can strike from distance or run in behind the opposing defense and with sophomore forward Shayla Ford emerging as another attacking threat, Stoughton’s new coaching staff has a good foundation to continue building on last year’s scoring output.

Kailee McCabe, Junior – Foxboro

Four years ago, Lily Sykes became the first player in any sport to be named to the first team in this site’s end-of-season award for four years in a row. It seemed like her graduation would leave a big hole in the middle of the pitch that Foxboro would struggle to fill, but Kailee McCabe stepped right in and extended that streak to six years and running. The two-time HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year is an imposing presence in the Warriors midfield, covering a ton of the pitch to be a factor with and without the ball. McCabe is strong in possession, rarely being pushed off the ball, but also has a nice touch and the vision to pick out the defense-splitting pass. She also has an eye for goal, scoring 17 goals and recording five assists last season, pushing her total to 30 goals in two years. Capable of winning the ball back and instantly getting the Warriors out on the break, McCabe has been a perfect foil for forward Jordyn Collins (see above), making Foxboro a constant threat and not giving opposing defenses a moment to rest.

Katie Miller, Junior – Mansfield

Stats aren’t always a good judge of the impact a player has on a team. Mansfield returned only one starter for last season and needed someone to step up and set the tone for a young team. Katie Miller played all but 10 minutes last fall and the sophomore was the leader in the center of the pitch that got the Hornets within one win of a tournament bid. Miller had one assist last season, but it was her ability to cover ground in the midfield, break up opposing attacks, and her accurate passing helped Mansfield quickly turn defense into attack. A strong, physical presence, Miller’s reading of the game allowed her to be in the right spots for interceptions or key tackles and she also has skill on the ball to drive at the opposition defense and beat opponents off the dribble. With a little more experience around her this year, Miller could be able to add more stats this season but it is clear she will be one of the keys to the Hornets moving back to the top of the Kelley-Rex this season.

Jenny Montville, Senior – King Philip

An experienced King Philip side took an undefeated season into the South final last year. Although the Warriors graduated the program’s two all-time leading scorers, there are several key players returning to try and keep KP at the top of the Kelley-Rex. One of those players is senior Jenny Montville, who is going to move from the midfield into a forward role and spearhead the Warriors attack. Solid on the ball and with the speed to make dangerous runs, Montville showed last year that she is capable of stepping up in big moments, such as her opening goal in the playoffs against Oliver Ames and a series of chances in the second half of the final against Bishop Feehan. Her time in midfield showed her passing range and she could drop deep to offer KP versatility in attack, holding the ball up, and allowing teammates to get into the box. It will be hard to match the output that KP’s attack mustered last year, but Montville’s finishing and experience will keep a young Warriors team moving forward.

Camryn O’Connor, Junior – Oliver Ames

Oliver Ames is moving back to the Davenport division for the first time since winning three straight division titles from 2013-15 and the Tigers have a roster loaded with varsity experience to regain the Davenport crown. One of the players that will be looking to pick up the scoring slack after the graduation of Erin Holmberg is junior forward Camryn O’Connor. The three-year varsity player has already shown the potential to be one of the league’s toughest attacking players, combining her skill on the ball, strength in possession, and her willingness to get into the mix on set pieces (always an important component of OA’s offense). O’Connor scored seven goals and assisted on six others last year and was a constant menace to even the top defenses in the league. There will be higher expectations this season, as O’Connor will be the primary forward and she will be looking to provide more consistency this fall to help the Tigers make a push to win the league again.

Erin Quaile, Senior – Franklin

Much of Franklin’s success last season came from its defense being one of the best in the Hock and that solidity at the back came from far more than just the back four. The Panthers were also a tenacious team in the midfield, putting pressure and forcing turnovers all over the field and that is where senior midfielder Erin Quaile dominates. Not surprising for a two-time HockomockSports.com Defensive Player of the Year in basketball, Quaile is quick, agile, and never backs down from a challenge. She covers a ton of ground in the center of the pitch and is not afraid of getting into physical battles. Quaile also showed off a good range of passing, keeping possession well when needed and quickly turning defense into attack with a long pass to the forwards. She may not be the biggest player, but Quaile was also strong on set pieces on both ends of the pitch and timed her late runs into the box to pop up with the occasional goal for the Panthers. Franklin will be in the mix for the league title this year and Quaile’s experience and nous in the middle of the park will be critical.

Elisa Diletizia scored in the first half to open the scoring for the Bulldogs, off an assist by Mia Gilmore while Anne Hoban doubled the lead with a second half strike off a Gilmore corner. Elyse Broderick made four saves to pick up the clean sheet. #14 Canton will play the winner of #2 Holliston and #7 Silver Lake on Monday afternoon at Oliver Ames at 4:00.

Canton Cruises Past Southeastern In Playoff Opener

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – The Canton girls soccer team might have just made it into the state tournament, but the trials and tribulations of the Hockomock League schedule have the Bulldogs prepared for anything this postseason.

That tournament run started on Tuesday afternoon with the 14th-seeded Bulldogs earning a dominant 8-0 win in the rain on the road against third-seeded Southeastern.

While the Hawks entered with just two losses in 14 games played, their schedule paled in comparison to the vigorous slate of 18 games that Canton played throughout the 2019 season. Of the eight losses the Dogs had this year, six came to playoff teams and the other two to two teams who missed the tournament by one game each.

“When you look at the games we play throughout the season, we play really good Division 1 schools the entire season,” said Canton head coach Kate Howarth. “A lot of those games, like the OA and Milford games, we were in it until the end but let in a late goal, those were the things we really had to tighten up and make sure we correct those because that’s how you lose games in tournaments but I think the fact that we’ve had those games and experienced those adverse moments, now we know we can’t do that again.

“I know our seed wasn’t great because of games like that but I think it prepared us for this. Moving forward, I think we’re in a good spot. All the good teams we see throughout the year prepare us for when we come into the tournament.”

Canton had eight different players find the back of the net, with six coming in the opening 40 minutes to seize a commanding lead of the match.

After testing the Southeastern keeper just once in the opening 10 minutes, the Dogs flipped a switch and peppered the net with 11 shots over the final 30 minutes, with six chances finding the back of the net.

The goal parade began in the 11th minute after junior Mia Gilmore won a battle at the top of the box, took a touch towards goal and blasted a low shot to the far post for a 1-0 lead.

It took just four minutes for the Bulldogs to add to the tally. Sophomore Gabby Herivaux took advantage of space in front of her and ripped a shot from distance that sailed over the keeper’s head in the 15th minute.

Junior Elisa Diletizia jumped onto a perfectly played through ball in behind the defense in the 20th minute, going in alone on the keeper and sliding a shot past her for a 3-0 lead.

After over 10 minutes without adding to its tally, Canton found the back of the net three times in the final 10 minutes of the half to take complete control.

In the 34th minute, junior Olivia Rodman showed off her speed by racing past a pair of defenders down the right wing, cutting into the area and blasting a shot that forced a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, Gilmore put a service into the area and Rodman was there to clean it up to make it 4-0.

A minute after the goal, freshman Emily McCabe connected with junior Paige Drury at the top of the box. After a touch to get some space, Drury’s low strike snuck past the keeper for a 5-0 advantage. And then just before halftime, senior Lauren McCabe fired a shot from the right side of the box that found the back of the net to make it 6-0.

“It took us a minute to get going and I think the first 15 minutes or so we’re shaky,” Howarth said. “We had to tighten things up and play more disciplined. Once we did that, we started to get the goals. We started to play balls in and put shots on frame. Once we do that, we’re a pretty dangerous team. As far as scoring, we have a lot of weapons but it’s all about staying organized from front to back and playing an entire 80 minutes.”

The Hawks had a pair of chances in the opening 40 minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net. Senior forward Katie Micale raced onto a ball in behind the defense in the 23rd minute but Canton keeper Elyse Broderick came charging off her line and forced the shot wide. Broderick also denied Micale with a save two minutes later.

With a large lead, Howarth was able to rest her starters for the entire second half.

Canton added to its lead in the 51st minute when Drury made a nice run to force a poor clearance from the Hawks’ defense. The ball ended up on the foot of junior Jenna Parrella, and she looped a high shot just under the bar for a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs capped the scoring in the 78th minute as Han Hong played a perfectly weighted ball between defenders to sophomore Fay Gallery, and Gallery made no mistake with a blast into the back of the net.

“It can carry over from here,” Howarth said. “We’ve been very fortunate that we’ve had a lot of kids score, we aren’t relying on just one or two players. We have five girls that are around 10 goals. We have a solid team environment where everybody contributes all the time. It doesn’t always happen but when it does it’s really beneficial for a team.”

Canton girls soccer (11-8-0) advances to the D2 South Quarterfinal and will travel to play #6 Somerset-Berkley (13-5-1) on Thursday at 6:00.

Attleboro, 4 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – Click here for a photo gallery from this game – Attleboro scored three first half goals, adding a fourth in the final 15 minutes that proved to be the game-winner. The Bombardiers opened the scoring just minutes in when junior Jackson Singer found space inside the 18-yard box for a one-timer. Taunton answered 10 minutes later as junior Hunter Cabral finished one a breakaway to bring the score level. Attleboro jumped back in front in the 16th minute when Liam Bischoff was fouled inside the area and senior Josh Smith calmly buried a penalty kick. Just before the break, Attleboro scored on a free kick. With the Tigers setting up their wall, Hugo Henriquez deposited his free kick into the open far post to make it 3-1. The Tigers, which played the entire second half down a man, got within one with a great combination goal. Kevin Monteiro won a challenge, Cabral played Alec Nunes wide, and Nunes delivered a hard, low cross to Travis Nunes, who made a strong run to the near post for a one-timer. Freshman Esvin Morales delivered what would be the game-winner in the 66th minute, firing a rocket from distance that snuck under the bar and in for a 4-2 lead. Travis Nunes grabbed his second of the game in the 72nd minute with a strong individual effort inside the area.

North Attleboro, 3 @ Canton, 1 – Final

Sharon, 0 @ Foxboro, 1 – Final

Franklin, 2 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final – Franklin scored once in each half, including a late insurance goal, to pick up an impressive win on the road at Oliver Ames. “It was a very good game for us, we finally played for the full 80 minutes,” said Franklin head coach Fran Bositis. Sophomore Terry O’Neill finished off a free kick from Sam Stowell to put the visitors up in the 11th minute. Ben Moccia sealed the win with a goal in the 74th minute, assisted by Donny Tappin.

King Philip, 0 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Mansfield scored inside the first 10 minutes of each half to earn its third straight win, keeping its postseason hopes alive. Freshman Aiden Steele put the Hornets ahead, finishing off a pass from Tony Salisbury after a throw from Cam Eddy. Salisbury, the Hornets’ starting keeper, got the nod up top alongside fellow keeper Sean Moody. Eddy’s throw led to the Hornets’ second goal, this time with Colin Caridi finishing off the throw in the 48th minute. Cam Bovey shined in net with the shutout while Sam Clayman had a stellar game at center back. “All of the seniors played awesome tonight,” said Mansfield goal Steve Sheridan.

Milford, 3 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – After a scoreless first half, Milford found the back of the net three times to secure two points on the road. Dan Santos netted his fifth goal of the season, finishing a corner kick from Pedro Araujo to open the scoring. Araujo doubled the lead off a terrific set up from Jordan Borges. Leo Coelho made it 3-0 by scoring on a penalty kick, drawn by Gabe Alvarenga. Carlos Terrinha had a strong game in the midfield for the Hawks while Chris Tocci played well defensively.

Taunton, 0 @ Attleboro, 4 – Final – Attleboro scored three times in the second half to win on senior night and keep its playoff hopes alive. Ashley Macia stopped a breakaway early in the game to keep it scoreless and it took 34 minutes before Attleboro was able to make a breakthrough. Jessica Gates opened the scoring on an assist from Emily Khang. Six minutes after the break, Briley Harnois made it 2-0 and then Isabella Salviati (from Ashley Dame) got the third. Jolie Casali finished the scoring on an assist by Emily Dunlea. Attleboro coach Steve Santos said, “Proud of the effort from all of our seniors!”

Canton, 3 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final – Elisa Diletizia scored twice (her fourth and fifth goals in the last two games) and Olivia Rodman added one for the Bulldogs, who clinched a spot in the tournament with the win. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime before the Bulldogs scored twice in the second half to get the victory. Steph McKenna had the North goal, assisted by Ari Rice. Kyla Rodrigues, Lily Adams, and Siobahn Weir all played well as North chased the game in the second half and Melissa McDermott and Alex Moulson had late chances go just wide for the Rocketeers.

Foxboro, 5 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Foxboro scored a pair of early second half goals and went on to finish with four goals after halftime to pick up two points on the road. Katelyn Mollica (assist), Kendra Wentling (assist), Grace Ferguson, Lizzy Davis (assist), and Caroline Rongione each scored for the Warriors in the win.

Oliver Ames, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Sydney St. Marie broke a scoreless deadlock seven minutes into the second half and the goal held up as the game-winner for the Panthers. Carly Alston assisted on the opening goal and then sealed the game with a goal of her own 10 minutes later, assisted by Chloe Barca. Breanna Atwood made seven saves to earn the clean sheet, while OA goalie Emma O’Donnell made eight saves in the loss. Leah Johnson and Emma Pereira and Olivia Carroll had strong games for OA.

Mansfield, 0 @ King Philip, 4 – Final – King Philip found the back of the net three times in the second half to pull away from the visiting Hornets. Avery Snead scored 10 minutes into the game on an assist from Chloe Layne but that would be the only goal of the first half as the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Snead grabbed her second of the game in the 45th minute, taking a ball over the top from Grace Lawler before blasting a shot into the top corner. Chloe Layne (from Lawler) made it 3-0 with a goal in the 63rd minute, and Makenzie Shandley added another six minutes later, finishing off a pass from Paulina Baczkowski.

Stoughton, 1 @ Milford, 7 – Final – Milford’s Ashleigh Starks exploded for four goals to lead the Scarlet Hawks to a win, the hosts qualifying for the state tournament with the two points. Juliana France, Brianna Guerreiro, and Brianna Franzini each scored once in the win while Maddie Boyle had four assists.

Attleboro, 0 @ King Philip, 5 – Final – King Philip’s offense exploded for four goals in the first half and never looked back to earn two points in a win over visiting Attleboro. Alex Leon scored a pair of goals to pace the offense while Steven Griffin had a goal and two assists in the win. Leon opened the scoring in the 14th minute on an assist from Brian McCarthy, and Ajae Olson doubled the lead four minutes later with Cam Lawrence setting things up. Griffin scored in the 26th minute on a feed from Owen Teixeira, and then set up Leon for KP’s fourth goal in the 38th minute. Griffin returned the favor to Teixeira in the second half for a 47th minute goal.

Canton, 0 @ Sharon, 2 – Final – The Eagles scored twice in the final 10 minutes at Gillette Stadium to earn an important victory. The first goal came with less than 10 minutes remaining, as Brian Higgins had his shot from inside the box saved by Canton goalie Alejandro Correal but the rebound fell right to Viktor Schneider, who made no mistake from close range. With time running down, the Eagles sealed the win when Schneider flicked a header to Mason Benton for a cool finish into the corner. Sharon now needs four points from its final three games to qualify for the playoffs.

Foxboro, 5 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Click here for a photo gallery from this game – Foxboro senior Dylan Barreira scored a first half hat trick and the Warriors kept their postseason hopes alive with a win at Stoughton. Barreira opened the scoring in the 30th minute, getting a deflected shot to find inside of the far post. He added a second on a nice shot from top of the area in the 32nd minute, and completed his hat trick by cleaning up a long throw from Tim Behn (two assists) in the 33rd minute. An own goal gave the Warriors a 4-0 lead, and in the 59th minute, Behn’s long throw found Barreira, who crossed for a one-timer from Joe Cusack to make it 5-0.

Taunton, 1 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Franklin picked up a win at home to qualify for the state tournament. Senior Donny Tappin orchestrated all three goals, setting up Ben Moccia for the first two goals of the net. Tappin then assisted on a goal from Charlie Amante to help Franklin secure the win.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Mansfield rallied for a pair of second half goals to earn an upset win over once-beaten Oliver Ames and keep its playoff hopes alive. The Tigers took the lead midway through the first half when Anthony DaCosta finished off a pass from Matthew Nikiciuk. Mansfield pulled level in the 58th minute as sophomore Sagar Koul finished a corner from Dan Rowe. Koul bagged his second of the game and the game-winner in the 78th minute off a service from Ethan Scholes.

North Attleboro, 1 @ Milford, 1 – Final – Milford and North Attleboro traded first half goals to split the points. Leo Coelho put the hosts ahead shortly before the midway mark of the first half before James Sales pulled the visitors level, burying a second ball off a corner kick.

King Philip, 4 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – King Philip found the back of the net three times in the second half to pull away and secure two points on the road at Attleboro. Kiera Lindmark (from Avery Snead) put the visitors on the board with a shot just under the crossbar in the 34th minute. Chloe Layne scored the next two for KP, finishing off a cross from Ava Tormey in the 53rd minute and getting a touch to Makayla Griffin’s free kick service in the 67th minute. Paulina Bazcowski capped KP’s scoring, going top shelf on a feed from Layne. Attleboro coach Steve Santos praised his team’s defensive effort to keep it close with the unbeaten Warriors. Briley Harnois scored the lone goal for the Bombardiers.

Canton, 4 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Elisa Diletizia scored a second half hat trick to power Canton to a big win at Gillette Stadium. The Eagles controlled play in the opening half, but failed to take the few chances that came their way. Canton took advantage to grab the lead against the run of play. Olivia Rodman created space for a cross from the left and it was turned in by a Sharon defender for a 1-0 lead at the break. Diletizia scored all three of her goals from outside the box, including the final shot that was curled in off the far post, moving the Bulldogs back to .500 and needing two points from the final two games to make the postseason.

Stoughton, 1 @ Foxboro, 13 – Final

Franklin, 5 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Bridgette Ginley scored twice in the first half to help secure Franklin’s spot in the state tournament. Ginley scored 10 minutes into the game off an assist by Sydney St. Marie and then added Franklin’s third with four minutes to go in the half, off an assist by Chloe Barca. Anna Grasso had the second, from Anna Balkus. In the second half, Sabrina Addi scored an unassisted goal and Rachel Hogan got the fifth, assisted by Bridget Leo. Taunton goalie Grace Pimenta made at least a dozen saves to keep the Tigers close.

Mansfield, 1 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final – Mansfield took a first half lead but Oliver Ames found the back of the net twice in the second half to pick up its 13th win of the season. Erin Holmberg finished off a cross from Allison Evin to bring the hosts level. Leah Johnson scored the winner for OA, getting a touch on a corner kick from Abby Hodges. Olivia Carroll and Mary Cross had strong games for OA.

Milford, 0 @ North Attleboro, 0 – Final – A back and forth contest ended in a scoreless draw with each team earning a point. Regan Fein recorded her fifth shutout for North Attleboro while Alex Moulson, Collette Petit, Lydia Hershey and Taylor Ward had strong games for North Attleboro. North coach Bill Wallace noted Tess Collins had her best game since returning from injury.

Sharon, 2 @ Canton, 0 – Final – Sharon scored a pair of second half goals to record a win on the road over Davenport for Canton. Viktor Schneider opened the scoring off an assist by Matt Keshekian, and Michael Baur buried a penalty kick to make it 2-0.

Girls Soccer
Sharon, 0 @ Canton, 6 – Final – Click here for a Photo Gallery from this game. Canton scored three times in the opening 10 minutes and never looked back, moving back to .500 in league play this season. Mia Gilmore led the way with a pair of goals for the Bulldogs. Sharon nearly took the lead four minutes into the game when Olivia Soby rocked the crossbar with a free kick, but minutes later Elisa Diletizia put the hosts in front with a swerving shot from 18 yards. The lead was soon doubled when Diletizia’s low cross was palmed to the feet of Olivia Rodman inside the six-yard-box. Gilmore struck from distance just seconds later. Gilmore added a second when her first shot came back off the bar and she settled the rebound and planted her next effort in the back of the net. Sharon again came close with another shot off the bar, this time from Nicole Teven. In the second half, Gabriella Herivaux showed quick feet on the edge of the box and then found the bottom corner to make it 5-0 and freshman Emily McCabe earned and scored a penalty for her first varsity goal to round out the scoring.

Medfield, 2 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Foxboro rallied from a 2-0 deficit to earn a draw with visiting Medfield. Jordyn Collins scored with 16 minutes left to get the Warriors on the board. Jordan Carman then tied the game with under a minute left to play.

King Philip, 3 vs. Notre Dame Academy, 0 – Final – King Philip had a strong showing on Monday afternoon, outshooting the visitors 17-2 on its way to a 3-0 win. Makenzie Shandley converted a through ball from Chloe Layne to put the hosts up 1-0 in the 20th minute. Layne doubled the lead six minutes later, finishing off a ball over the top from Paige Varvarigos. Ally Stanton headed in a cross from Layne in the 64th minute to put the Warriors up 3-0. Taylor Butler had the shutout in net.

Field Hockey
Attleboro, 5 vs. Bishop Feehan, 0 – Final – Anna Beck scored a pair of goals to pace the Bombardiers past visiting Bishop Feehan.

North Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – North Attleboro’s Grace Cole scored to make it a one-goal game halfway through the first half but the Panthers scored three unanswered goals in the second half to secure the win. Kate O’Rourke and Amanda Lewandowski each scored to put the Panthers up 2-0 before Cole converted to get North on the board. Olivia Rondeau (from Molly Collins), Lewandowski (from Hanna Richardson), and Stephanie Bell scored in the second half for Franklin. Neilee Hess made two saves in the win for the Panthers.

Sharon, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 8 – Final – Oliver Ames scored inside the first minute and never looked back in a big win over Sharon. Ellie Waters had four points, scoring once with three helpers while Georgia Costello scored a hat trick in the win. Emily Han had a strong game defensively to help the Tigers control possession.

Stoughton, 2 vs. East Bridgewater, 1 – Final – Abby Massarelli and Haley Nelson each scored to lead the Black Knights past East Bridgewater, avenging a loss to the Vikings in the season opener.

Volleyball
Attleboro, 3 vs. Norton, 2 – Final

Canton, 3 @ Notre Dame Academy, 0 – Final – Canton went on the road and secured a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-10) sweep over Notre Dame Academy. Liz Bickett had a strong day, registering nine kills, four blocks, and seven digs, Taylor Harris added seven kills, three aces, and eight digs, and Taylor Reynolds finished with five aces and 10 assists. Jackie Morrissey chipped in with 12 assists and two kills for the Bulldogs while Nikki Desjardins had 20 service points.

Norwood, 2 @ Foxboro, 3 – Final – Foxboro let a 2-0 lead slip away but the Warriors prevailed with a 3-2 (25-9, 25-17, 15-25, 14-25, 15-11) win. Grace Boudreau had 12 digs, seven kills, and two aces, Sara Regan added six aces and 10 assists, Shannon McDonald shined at the net with eight kills and three blocks, and Sara Addeche chipped in with 14 digs.

Golf
Canton, 147 @ North Attleboro, 154 – Final – Canton sophomore Conor Hunter fired an even par 35 to earn match medalist honors and lead the Bulldogs to a close win over North Attleboro. Will Gefteas and Nate MacDonald each shot 37 for Canton while Chris Lavoie, who eagled the fifth hole, and Owen Donovan both shot 38. North Attleboro’s Jillian Barend had a team-low 36 (one over), Justin Strom and Aidan Weir each shot 39, and Jake Gaskin chipped in with a 40.

King Philip, 156 @ Oliver Ames, 152 – Final – Oliver Ames’ Tate Hadges shot an even par round of 34 to help the Tigers take a close decision over visiting King Philip. Kayla Schuberth had a team-low round of 37 for King Philip.

Sharon, 163 @ Milford, 178 – Final – Ethan Skelly shot a 35 to earn medalist honors in Sharon’s win on the road. Andrew Glaser and Eric Carter both shot 42 for the Eagles while Tyler Wetherbee led Milford with a 41.

Franklin, 1 @ Canton, 2 – Final – Olivia Rodman sealed the win for the Bulldogs with a shot into the top corner with only two minutes remaining in the game. Canton battled back after falling behind to an early Sabrina Addi free kick goal. Elisa Diletizia tied the game from the penalty spot with 12 minutes left in the first half. It was a back-and-forth game with both teams creating chances and both goalies busy. Canton’s Elyse Briderick made 15 stops and Franklin’s Breanna Atwood had 14. Franklin coach Tom Geysen rued his team’s missed opportunities and added, “I feel we are making improvements but there are things we need to do better to succeed.”

Mansfield, 2 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Tarryn Smith scored a pair of first half goals to earn the win for the visitors and give Mansfield coach Kevin Smith the 150th victory of his career. Kerrin Sears and Abby Oppenheim had the assists, as the Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Sharon cut the lead in half before the break.

Golf
Canton, 149 @ Stoughton, 192 – Final – Canton’s Chris Lavoie shot a one-under round of 35 on the road at Easton Country Club to lead the Bulldogs past Stoughton. Conor Hunter also had a strong day with a round of 37, Mike Leonetti shot a 38, and Will Gefteas, Nate MacDonald, and James O’Keeffe all shot 39 for Canton. Stoughton sophomore Anthony Hearn had a low round of 42 for the Black Knights.

Foxboro, 167 @ Franklin, 155 – Final – Franklin senior Jake Blaney fired a career-low round of 36 to help the Panthers upend previously unbeaten Foxboro. Blaney shared medalist honors with junior Jack Paterson, who earned his third medalist honor just this week. Pat Dolan added a round of 40 and Nolan Norton chipped in with a 43 for Franklin.

Milford, 176 @ North Attleboro, 158 – Final – North Attleboro’s Jillian Barend birdied on both the third and ninth holes, finishing with a two-over round of 37 to earn medalist honors in the Rocketeers’ win over Milford. Aidan Weir added a 39, Justin Strom carded a 40, and Sam Gallagher added a 42 for North. Milford’s Ed Madden had a team-low round of 42, Nick Wimette added a 43, and Jason Luchini shot 44 for the Hawks.

Oliver Ames, 165 @ Sharon, 174 – Final – Oliver Ames picked up a win on the road the Cape Club of Sharon to improve to 3-2. Tate Hadges earned medalist honors for the Tigers, shooting a team-low round of 40 while Logan Domenico and Brad Powers both shot 41. Justin Shapiro also scored for OA with a 43. Sharon’s Andrew Glaser and Nathan Daley both fired a 41 while Eric Carter finished with a 44.

2019 Davenport Girls Soccer Preview

Canton

2018 Record: 8-9-2
2018 Finish: Reached Div. 2 South Preliminary Round

The Bulldogs finished third in the Davenport division last season and made it back to the state tournament, despite carrying a relatively young roster. Now, a year later, Canton brings back a strong corps, especially in the attack, and will look to take steps forward to try and challenge for the league title.

The best form of defense may be the attack for the Bulldogs, who will pair juniors Olivia Rodman and Elisa Diletizia again in the forward line. The classmates are a dynamic pairing and critical to Canton scoring 52 goals last season, which was the fifth-best total in the league. Senior Morgan McCabe and sophomore Gabriella Herivaux add depth to the forward line.

In the midfield, sophomore Allie McCabe is coming off an impressive rookie season as a playmaker and will be the engine in the heart of the pitch. Sarah Collins will be tough to replace in the defense, but seniors Alexa Maffeo, Caroline Tourgee, and Kerstin Hansen are back. Sophomore Elyse Broderick is back to take over between the posts and will be the anchor of the defensive unit.

“I think the key for us this year will be consistency,” said Canton coach Kate Howarth. “Our girls are bought in and want to find ways to win! I think we will find ways to win some tough games and get better every single day! That’s always our goal. Every time we step out onto that field, improve and get better. If we do that, we will put together a great year.”

Foxboro

2018 Record: 15-2-3
2018 Finish: Reached Div. 2 South Quarterfinal

Last season, a young Warriors roster brought home the program’s first league title since 1993 and it could start a run of success for Foxboro, which graduated only four players from last year’s team that led the league in scoring and allowed less than a goal per game. Adding a year of experience could make this year’s team even more of a threat not only for a division crown but for a deep tourney run.

Youth was on display all over the pitch last season, particularly up front. Junior Jordyn Collins had a breakout season putting her speed together with clinical finishing to become one of the league’s most dangerous forwards. There is plenty of help for the forwards from the midfield, senior Lizzy Davis and junior Kailtyn Mollica are both dangerous on the wings, creating chances and the odd goals as well.

The lynchpin last year was a freshman. Sophomore Kailee McCabe, the reigning HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year, had a remarkable rookie season. She controlled the midfield and drove forward to add scoring punch. Senior midfielder Kendra Wentling also adds a layer of protection for the defense, which will miss the graduated Alex Stamatos but has experience in senior Yara Fawaz and junior goalie Morgan Sylvestre.

“I am so excited about this team and what we are capable of this season,” said Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup. “I know if we stay focused and work together we will do great things.”

Milford

2018 Record: 5-12-0
2018 Finish: Missed Playoffs
Coach: Lou Colabello
This is the second season in charge for Milford coach Lou Colabello and he is hopeful that his team will build a comfort level with his expectations and systems to try and get the Hawks into the state tournament picture and push up the Davenport division standings. With a strong core of returning players, many with two or three years of experience on varsity, Milford has the opportunity to make a leap this fall.

The midfield will be a strength for the Hawks with seniors Juliana France and Ashleigh Starks are capable of breaking up opposition attacks and turning those quickly into attacks. Freshman Daniella Atheron will jump right into the attack and is expected to contribute goals this season. Defensively, the Hawks have experience in the form of seniors Maddie Boyle and Annie Flanagan and can count on solid play from both goalies, senior Olivia Marshall, and junior Carly Ferreira.

“We are really excited about our opportunities this year,” Colabello said. “With a heavy nucleus returning on defense and in the midfield, we hope to improve offensively. With a good mixture of experience and youth, I feel that we will make a vast improvement from last year.”




North Attleboro

2018 Record: 12-3-4
2018 Finish: Reached Div. 1 South First Round

North Attleboro is entering a transition season after graduating 14 seniors, including nine starters, from last year’s Davenport division runners-up. The Rocketeers will especially have to cope with the loss of leading scorer, and 2018 HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Ashlyn Gaulin, but there is hope that the new faces will be able to step in and rise to the challenge this fall.

The attack looks very different this season with junior Tess Collins, who is battling a preseason injury, taking on the responsibility of leading the line along with Steph McKenna. There have been promising signs from that duo during the preseason. Midfield is more experienced for North this year, with seniors Alex Moulson, Abi Slaney, and Lily Cameron back from last year, while Olivia Wills and Abby Noreck are making the jump from JV. The defense is mostly new, but senior Lydia Hershey is back and will offer much-needed leadership, while senior Regan Fein has the starting job in net.

“Right now we have six players who have been unable to practice preseason with injuries,” said North Attleboro coach Bill Wallace. “Once we get everyone healthy we should iron out some assignments and figure out our rotations.”

Sharon

2018 Record: 2-15-1
2018 Finish: Missed Playoffs
Coach: Catherine Sullivan
Second-year head coach Catherine Sullivan will have a lot of new faces to work with this season after graduating 11 seniors from last year’s roster and she is hoping that the Eagles can use an experienced midfield to create more scoring opportunities and continue to improve over the course of the season.

The midfield combines technically-sound players with energy and speed. Seniors Marika Fillion sets the tone with her work rate and senior Bella Berger is one of the team’s top playmakers. Junior Amelia Scappaticci adds skill to the team’s passing game, while freshman Olivia Soby is expected to provide an attacking spark in the middle of the pitch. Up front, junior Emily Griffin will try to use her speed to create chances. In the back, junior goalie Cass Barbera got a lot of experience between the pipes last season and she will count on classmate Molly McAlevey to hold things down in front of her.

Sullivan said, “I’m excited about the mix of strong returning players and new talent stepping in this season. It’s a great group of kids who are dedicated to improving our style and speed of play, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together.”

Stoughton

2018 Record: 0-17-1
2018 Finish: Missed Playoffs
Coach: Tara Daniels
It has been a decent preseason for the Black Knights and head coach Tara Daniels hopes that they carry that over once things kick off for real. Stoughton has been building cohesion for the last several seasons and Daniels believes that there is the right mix of upperclassmen and newcomers to make the Black Knights a competitive team this fall.

Senior Nicole Weir has found a spot in the back line and will provide the vocal leadership that the defense needs. Senior Brianna Buckley has won the starting job in goal this year after earning time between the posts last season. Junior Mackenzie Manning is the key to the Stoughton midfield, having led the team in points in each of her first two seasons on varsity and continuing to be the team’s primary playmaker. Freshman Shayla Ford will step into the attack this season and there is hope that she can make an instant impact with her speed and finishing ability. One of the most important developments of the preseason is the growing understanding between Manning and Ford going forward.

“This year we have a strong core of returning upperclassmen that have worked the past few years to help shape and strengthen this overall program, with the level of play I am seeing from this group of upperclassmen and the freshman class, it is going to be an extremely competitive season for the Knights,” said Daniels.
