Wednesday’s Schedule & Scoreboard – 05/17/16

Today’s games are listed below.

Baseball
Franklin, 4 @ Attleboro, 3 – Final – Franklin senior Steve Ferguson scored what turned out to be the winning run on a squeeze play in the top of the seventh and the Panthers held off a late surge from Attleboro to earn the win. Franklin scored two runs in the top frame to go up 4-1. Jake Noviello went 6.1 innings for Franklin, striking out nine with four hits allowed to earn the win. Bryan Woelfel picked up the last two outs to earn the save for Franklin. Offensively, Jake Lyons had two hits, including a double, and scored a run, Ryan Hodgkins belted an RBI triple and scored a run and Cam Lupien knocked in a run. Attleboro’s Matt Callahan had two hits, scored a run and drove in two, Dylan Maskell had two hits and an RBI and Tyler Davis reached base four times, stole two bases and scored once. Tyler McGovern was the tough luck loser on the mound, tossing a complete game. “He pitched well, made it tough for us,” said FHS head coach Zach Brown.

Foxboro, 9 @ Canton, 7 – Final – Colin Thoener did it all for the Warriors, tossing a complete game and knocking in a team-high four RBI in a close win over Canton. Thoener scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out five to earn the win while going 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. AJ Bubencik also had a strong day offensively, going 3-for-4 with three runs and a stolen base and sophomore Anthony Mollica had two hits, three RBI and two stolen bases.

Mansfield, 8 @ King Philip, 5 – Final (8 inn.) – Kevin Dow (2-for-4) knocked in Cullin Anastasia (2-for-3, RBI) for the winning run in the top of the eighth and Aidan Cahill brought in two more insurance runs — Max Boen (2-for-2, RBI) and Matt Farragher — as Mansfield escaped with an 8-5 win in extras at King Philip. Mansfield took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but KP responded with two in the bottom half. The Hornets tacked on single runs in the second and third to make it 5-2, but KP cut into the deficit with a run in the third and tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Mansfield’s Kyle Moran earned the winning, tossing 3.1 innings in relief with just two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Stephen Murray knocked in two runs for KP while Will Weir (2-for-4, two runs) and Ben Furfari (2-for-4) each knocked in one.

Milford, 2 @ North Attleboro, 9 – Final – North Attleboro junior Peter Cohen shined in his first ever varsity start, allowing just one run on four hits and no walks, striking out five to lead the Rocketeers to a big division win. Offensively, the Rocketeers had nine hits, scoring two runs in the first, five in the second and tacking on single runs in each the third and fifth innings. Zach DeMattio (three RBI) belted a two-run home run in the first and John Brennan had a solo home run in the third.

Oliver Ames, 5 @ Taunton, 8 – Final – Taunton junior Christin Simoes had two hits, including a home run, and knocked in a pair of runs as Taunton prevailed against OA. OA took a 1-0 lead in the first, only for Taunton to respond with two runs in the bottom half. Taunton added three more in the third to take a 5-1 lead. OA didn’t go quietly, tying the game with four runs in the fourth but Taunton added three more in the sixth to get the win. Jacob Crawford added two hits and Matt Machado had one hit and an RBI for Taunton. Tyler Medeiros earned the win on the mound, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts and four earned runs allowed. Oliver Ames’ Cam Johnson went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI and Sam Burr added two hits as well.

Sharon, 3 @ Stoughton, 4 – Final – Stoughton overcame a one run deficit with the tying run in the third and then the go-ahead run in the fifth to edge out the Eagles and clinch their second straight Davenport title. Senior Josh Roos delivered the big hit for the Black Knights, connecting for a one-out triple in the fifth and came on a sac fly from Ruben Gonzalez for what turned out to be the winning run. Gonzalez also scored the tying run in the third, scoring on a passed ball after singling and stealing second. Stoughton took the lead with two runs in the first on Luke Johnson’s two-out two-run triple. Johnson also earned the win on the mound, going six innings with three runs allowed on eight hits, three strikeouts and one walk. Evan Gibb pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save.

Softball
Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Franklin got all three of its runs within the first two innings and junior Jackie Cherry did the rest in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout. Franklin freshman Anna Balkus singled, stole second and used two wild pitched to come home. Ally Shea also scored in the first inning for the Panthers. In the second inning, Cherry helped her own cause, reaching in the second and having courtesy running Emma DiPhilippo scoring the Panthers’ third run. In the circle, Cherry allowed just two hits, issued two walks and struck out five.

Canton, 5 @ Foxboro, 10 – Final

King Philip, 4 @ Mansfield, 0- Final – King Philip Elise Pereira allowed just one hit while fanning 10 batters in a complete game shutout. Jenn Hutnyan paced KP’s offense with three hits, an RBI and a run scored while Hailey McCasland added two this and Faith Turnese contributed with a key pinch hit double. Mansfield’s Sarah Cahill had three strikeouts while giving up eight hits while Megan Letendre had the lone hit of the day for the Hornets.

North Attleboro, 3 @ Milford, 6 – Final – North Attleboro cut into MIlford’s 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third but the Scarlet Hawks had an answer, tacking on two runs in the bottom of the fourth to pick up the win. The teams traded single runs in the sixth inning. Junior Emily Piergustavo paced Milford’s offense, going 4-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Kate Irwin (1-for-3) added three runs, Jess Tomaso had two hits and an RBI and Maggie Farrell reached twice and knocked in one run. MHS head coach Steve DiVitto said Maddy Bonvino “played an exceptional defensive game at second base.” Kelley Reichert picked up the win, going six innings, scattering five hits and striking out one. Ali Atherton earned the save, striking out two in one inning of work. For North Attleboro, Meg Barlow had two hits and a a run scored and Ashley Cangiano drove in pinch runner Kat Munley.

Taunton @ Oliver Ames – Postponed to Thursday, 5/18 at 3:45.

Stoughton, 12 @ Sharon, 0 – Final (6 inn.) – Brianna Ferrandiz went 3-for-3 with three RBI to pace the Black Knights on offense, while Gina Carafa allowed only two hits and struck out nine in a six-inning shutout. Jordan Lyons added two hits and three RBI and Nikki Coppola drilled a three-run homer for Stoughton.

Boys Lacrosse
Attleboro, 2 @ Sharon, 10 – Final

Canton, 18 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Canton senior CJ Martin netted first career goal and then went on to add two more to record a hat trick in the Bulldogs’ big win. Brian Albert and Alec Raguso also scored their first career goals while Connor Proctor and Matt Mackay found the back of the net for the first time this season.

Foxboro, 5 @ Franklin, 9 – Final – Franklin raced out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and used that strong start to take down Foxboro. The Panthers gained a 7-3 edge by halftime but were blanked in the third quarter by Foxboro’s defense and the Warriors cut the deficit to three at 7-4 entering the fourth. But Franklin recovered and won the fourth quarter 2-1 to prevail with a win. Eric Civetti had three goals and three assists, Packie Watson also netted a hat trick and had one assist and Nitin Chaudhury had one goal and one assist. Chase Tanner and Jake Davis each added one goal while sophomore Jacob Alexander notched 15 wins at the face off X.

King Philip, 21 @ Milford, 1 – Final

North Attleboro, 12 @ Mansfield, 6 – Final – North Attleboro built a commanding 7-2 lead by halftime and never looked back to notch a key road win and clinch the Davenport division outright. Jason McNeany won 10 of the 15 face offs he participated in to help give Big Red the possession edge. Jack Dakin scored a team-high five goals and added two assists, Zach McGowan (two goals, two assists) totaled four points and McNeany finished with a pair of goals and one assist. Owen Costello also recorded four points for the Rocketeers while Colin Young scored once and had one assist, Tommy Lindstrom added two assists and Hunter Sarro notched one helper.

Oliver Ames, 17 @ Stoughton, 7 – Final

Girls Lacrosse
Taunton, 12 @ Canton, 14 – Final – Emily Fabbiano scored six goals to lead Canton to a come-from-behind victory, while Mary Kent added a hat trick and Kathryn Doody made 11 saves for the Bulldogs. The Tigers were led by Abbey Kingman’s five goals and four from Alana Tavares, while Lorna Li made 17 saves.

Franklin, 9 @ Foxboro, 8 – Final

Milford, 5 @ King Philip, 21 – Final

Mansfield, 11 @ North Attleboro, 18 – Final – North clinched its tournament berth with the win and had 14 assists on its 18 goals. Chloe Olsen had four assists, while Julia Dakin, Katie Lindstrom, Kenzie Rosenberg and Erin Holley each had two assists apiece.

Boys Tennis
Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – Franklin bounced back from just its third loss with a sweep of Attleboro, dropping just four games total. Eli Brooks moved up a spot and earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles, Rohan Herur won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Tyler DiPalma, usually a second doubles player, notched a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles. The team of James Johnston and Derek Wu continued their strong season with a 6-0, 6-0 win at first doubles while Dan Angermeier and Tony Calderone won 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles.

Canton, 0 @ Foxboro, 5 – Final

King Philip, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – King Philip prevailed from a competitive divisional match with Mansfield with a close win, taking two wins in singles and one more in doubles. Cole Ginter prevailed 6-1, 7-5 at first singles and Martin Matous recorded a 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. KP’s team of Ryan Gemelli and Marco DiStefano earned a key 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win at first doubles to seal the win. Mansfield’s Luke Nickerson won 6-0, 6-1 at second singles and the team of Gus Daganhardt and Stephen Zenack won 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 at second doubles.

North Attleboro, 5 @ Milford, 0 – Final – It was a clean sweep for the Rocketeers, winning all five matches in straight sets to earn a road victory. Zac Pfeffer won 6-1, 6-3 at first singles, Alex Rinaldi moved up a spot and earned a 6-2, 6-1 at second singles and Alex Pfeffer prevailed from third singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win. The team of Daniel Zhang and Ben Pfeffer won 6-1, 6-4 at first doubles and Andrew Harris and Vikram Senthilakumaran notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at second doubles.

Taunton, 5 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final – Taunton’s first doubles of sophomores Dylan Kullas and Charlie Fiske emerged victorious from a 10-set super tie breaker to complete the Tigers’ clean sweep. Kullas and Fiske won 6-7, 7-5, 11-9 while the team of junior Kyle Dennehy and freshman Alex Pugh won 6-2, 6-4 at second doubles. Taunton swept singles as well with sophomore Brett Beaulieu (6-1, 6-1), junior Mike Briggs (6-2, 6-2) and senior Eric Gwozdz (6-2, 7-5) all winning in straight sets.

Stoughton, 0 @ Sharon, 5 – Final

Girls Tennis
Franklin, 5 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – The Panthers earned their second 5-0 sweep of the season, both coming in victories over Attleboro. Hannah Sweeney (first singles) and Anja Deric (second singles) won in straight sets without losing a game while junior Stephanie Schiavo won 6-3, 6-1 at third singles. Franklin’s first doubles team of Madison Derby and Julia Hogan won 6-4, 6-3 and juniors Jillian McLaughlin and Alexa Katsaros notched a 7-5, 6-0 win at second doubles.

Foxboro, 5 @ Canton, 0 – Final – Foxboro lost a total of four games in singles play, winning all three matches in straight sets in a win over Canton. Sophia Prinos won 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, Lexi Nelson recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles and Julia Muise walked away with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at third singles. The team of Kayla Prag and Olivia Dantona won 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles for Foxboro while Jacey Nicklas and Morgan Krockta prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 at second doubles.

Mansfield, 1 @ King Philip, 4 – Final – King Philip won a pair of matches in both singles and doubles to take down visiting Mansfield. Erin Regnier won 6-2, 7-5 at second singles and Meghan Sepich picked up a 6-2, 7-5, 10-5 win at third singles. The team of Megan Davenport and Carly Adams recorded a 6-4, 6-0 win at first doubles and Corinne Palumbo and Gracie Jarest won 6-1, 6-0 at second doubles. Mansfield’s Paulina Martin won at first singles, falling 2-6 in the first set before winning by default.

Milford, 0 @ North Attleboro, 5 – Final

Oliver Ames, 0 @ Taunton, 5 – Final – Taunton’s Jillian Pagliuca prevailed in a tight match at third singles, winning 7-5, 6-3 to complete the sweep. Olivia Sweeney won 6-1, 6-0 at first singles and Jordan Pagliuca notched a 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Taunton lost just two games total in doubles play with Ashley Eason and Emily Moor (first doubles) and Caroline Hebert and Jordan Martin (second doubles) each winning 6-0, 6-1.

Attleboro, 5 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final (8 inn.) – Attleboro’s offense exploded for four runs in the top of the eighth to earn a win on the road at Frothingham Park. Dylan Maskell knocked in two runs, including the game-winner, to put Attleboro ahead. Sophomore Mason Houle followed that up with an RBI single and Sam Larkin brought home the fifth run with a squeeze bunt. Drew Pagano allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of work in his first ever varsity start. Eoin Kelleher pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Oliver Ames’ Cam Johnson reached base three times, with one hit and two walks, and also stole a base.

Canton, 7 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Canton’s Robbie Wilkinson went 6.1 innings for the Bulldogs to earn the win.

North Attleboro, 1 @ Stoughton, 2 – Final (10 inn.)

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Attleboro, 4 – Final

Foxboro, 1 @ North Attleboro, 14 – Final (5 inn.) – With the game tied at 1-1 through three innings, North Attleboro exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth. Olivia Capobianco reached four times (three hits) and scored two runs, Andrea Miceli was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and Abby Gallagher recorded a hit, walked, two RBI and scored two runs. Sam Courtemanche, Kristina Murphy, Liz Morehouse and Meg Barlow all finished with two hits apiece for Big Red. Bella Erti struck out six in four innings of work while Olivia DesRoches pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

Franklin, 3 @ Mansfield, 4 – Final – Mansfield scored two runs in the third, added two more in the fourth and never trailed in a close win over Franklin. Marissa Staffier knocked in a pair of runs in the third, bringing home Megan Letendre (double) and Mady Bendanillo (single). In the fourth, Letendre and Bendanillo – who both had two hits on the day – had RBI singles to cap the Hornets’ scoring. Sarah Cahill struck out three while allowing 10 hits in the win. Franklin freshman Anna Balkus went 3-for-3 while Alyssa DaSilva and Alexx Niss (two-run triple)
each had two hits for the Panthers.

Sharon, 8 vs. Ursuline, 3 – Final – Sharon had its best offensive game of the season in a win over Ursuline, sweeping the season series. Alli Small (2-for-4), Sam Marglous (3-for-3) and Clara Cook (2-for-4) each had extra base hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Eagles. Rebecca Clayman, Shoshana Lowe and Courtney Sollis all contributed with a triple each. Cook notched 10 strikeouts and scattered five hits in a complete game effort.

Oliver Ames, 2 @ Attleboro, 3 – Final – Attleboro won a pair of singles matches and prevailed with the win over Oliver Ames with a three-set win at first doubles. Shawn Gordon won 6-3, 6-4 at first singles and Abdul Khatib won 6-2, 6-0 at second singles for the Bombardiers. The team of Eli Araujo and Ryan Gordon won 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at first doubles to clinch the win. Oliver Ames senior Danny Hanley won 4-6, 7-5, 10-4 at third singles and Jack Simone and Alex Barnett teamed up for a 6-4, 6-2 win at second doubles.

Foxboro, 5 @ Milford, 0 – Final

Franklin, 2 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Franklin won both doubles matches but Mansfield swept singles play to earn the win. For Franklin, James Johnston and Derek Wu won 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles and Tyler DiPalma and Rahul Hosdurg prevailed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at second doubles.

Stoughton, 0 @ North Attleboro, 5 – Final – North Attleboro defended home court with a sweep, winning all five matches in straight sets. Zac Pfeffer won 6-0, 6-2 at first singles, Daniel Zhang won 6-4, 7-5 at second singles and Alex Rinaldi prevailed 6-2, 6-2 at third singles. The team of Andrew Harris and Vikram Senthilakumaran won 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles and Mayank Wadekar and Alex Pfeffer won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles.

Taunton, 3 vs. Durfee, 2 – Final – Taunton edged out non-league rival Durfee with two wins at singles and one more at doubles. Sophomore Brett Beaulieu won 6-3, 6-2 at first singles, senior Eric Gwozdz notched a 6-1, 6-4 win at third singles and the team of sophomores Dylan Kullas and Charlie Fiske prevailed with a 6-1, 7-5 win at first doubles.

Foxboro, 1 vs. Martha’s Vineyard, 4 – Final – Foxboro’s Lexi Nelson captured the Warriors lone match, winning 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6) at second singles.

Mansfield, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Mansfield earned two wins in singles play and one more in doubles to defeat Franklin on the road. Junior Sarah Doyle won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles and sophomore Elizabeth Elsner took a 6-2, 6-2 decision at third singles. Mansfield’s first doubles team of Chloe Peters and Tessa Garufi won 6-0, 6-0. Franklin’s Hannah Sweeney won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles and the team of Jillian McLaughlin and Alexa Katsaros won 6-4, 2-6, 10-4 at second doubles.

Sharon, 4 @ Bishop Feehan, 1 – Final

North Attleboro, 5 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – North Attleboro dropped just one game in singles play and prevailed with wins in both doubles matches at Stoughton. Emily Chiasson won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, Jordan Willis won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Azka Siddiq notched a 6-0, 6-1 at third singles. The pairing of Gabby Duva and Katie Demontigny won 6-3, 6-1 at first doubles and Hana Hershey and Leah Marceau teamed up for a 6-1, 6-3 win at second doubles.

Taunton, 5 @ Durfee, 0 – Final – The Tigers won all five matches in straight sets, losing a total of eight games to leave Fall River with a win over the Hilltoppers. Olivia Sweeney won 6-2, 6-1 at first singles, Jordan Pagliuca notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles and Jillian Pagliuca recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles. Ashleigh Eason and Emily Moor teamed up for a 6-2, 6-2 win at first doubles while Caroline Hebert and Jordan Martin didn’t lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles.

Boys Track
Attleboro, 87 @ Taunton, 49 – Final

Canton, 61 @ Stoughton, 75 – Final – Canton’s John Guenthner and Jack Healey were both double winners; Guenthner clocking in at a personal best 15.9 in the 100M hurdles and also winning the 400M hurdles in 60 while Healey won the 1 Mile (5:00) and the 2 Mile (11:12). Other first place finishes for Canton included Steven Brady (triple jump, 39’1″), Riley McDonnell (200M, 23.8), Marquise Montes (long jump, 18’11.25″) and the 4×100 of Montes, Cordell Smith, Dan Pierre and Dan Alice.

Canton, 50 @ Stoughton, 86 – Final – Canton’s Sarah Collins concluded the dual meet schedule with another two wins, taking first in the 400M hurdles (68.3) and the 800M (2:33). Other first place finishes for the Bulldogs include Nicole Brown (100M, 12.9 – a personal best), Jimisha Williams (200M, 27.1 – a personal best), Bronwyn Mahoney (shot put) and Erika Lum (high jump, 4’10”). Canton’s 4×100 of Lum, Williams, Brown and Claire Belisle) also came in first with a state qualifying time of 51.5.

Foxboro, 42 @ North Attleboro, 94 – Final

Franklin, 71 @ King Philip, 65 – Final

Oliver Ames, 68 @ Mansfield, 68 – Final – The Tigers and Hornets finished level in the final dual meet of the season. For Mansfield, Angela Corkery won the javelin with a 20-foot PR, finished second in the triple jump and was a member of the 4×100 relay (with Jordan Brill-Cass, Julia Harrison and Amanda Mangano) that finished first. Madison Haughey won both the high jump and the long jump and finished second in the 100M hurdles.

Baseball
Taunton, 2 @ Attleboro, 5 – Final – Attleboro erased a two-run deficit with four runs in the fifth inning and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to hand Taunton its second loss of the season. Big Blue scored on a bases-loaded walk, a two-run error and Dylan Maskell came through with an RBI single to give Attleboro a 4-2 lead. Matt Callahan (two hits) delivered an RBI triple in the sixth inning for Attleboro. Sophomore Eoin Kelleher earned the win with a complete game effort, allowing five hits while retiring five batters on strikes.

Softball
Taunton, 11 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Taunton senior Courtney Fisher tossed a perfect game, retiring all 21 batters that she faced, in the Tigers’ win. Fisher struck out eight and made a terrific play, snagging a line drive up the middle with one out in the seventh, to preserve the perfect game. THS head coach Dave Lewry said Hannah Aldrich also made a great play in the first, playing a bad hop grounder off her chest and gunning the runner out at first. Jaime Brown was 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI, MacKenzie Handrahan went 2-for-3 with an RBI, freshman Jaylin Couto went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run and eighth grader McKenzie McAloon had two hits, a stolen base and an RBI for the Tigers.

Junior Mike Briggs won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles, senior Eric Gwozdz notched a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win at third singles and the team of sophomores Dylan Kullas and Charlie Fiske won 7-5, 6-4 at first doubles.

Wolicki won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, Jeevith Chandrasekar won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles and Josh Diep notched a 7-5, 6-1 win at third singles. Attleboro, 0 @ Taunton, 5 – Final – Taunton lost just a total of four game, winning all five matches in straight sets to earn a win at home over Attleboro. Olivia Sweeney (first singles), Jillian Pagliuca (second singles) and the team of Ashleigh Eason and Emily Moor (first doubles) all won 6-0, 6-0. Vanessa Rosa won 6-1, 6-0 at third singles and the team of Callie Hebert and Jordan Martin took a 6-1, 6-2 win at second doubles.

Stoughton, 0 @ Canton, 5 – Final – The Bulldogs won all five matches in straight sets to earn their second win of the season. Emma Sokolovsky won 6-4, 6-0 at first singles, Jamie Cree recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles and Kiki Karavas prevailed with a 6-2, 6-1 win at third singles. The team of Julia Burkowsky and Caitlin Matthews won 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles and Sarah Hernandez and Stelina Michaelidis teamed up for a 6-2, 6-1 win at second doubles for the Bulldogs.

Riley McDonnell had a pair of second place finishes, clocking in at 1:01.4 in the 400M hurdles and 24.1 in the 200M. Canton’s 4×400 relay team (Amico, Milne, Guenthner, Graham) finished fist.

Canton, 40 @ Sharon, 95 – Final – Canton’s Sarah Collins was a double winner, taking first in the 400M hurdles (1:11.1) and in the 800M (2:33.5) Erika Lum was first in the high jump (4-10) and second in the 100M (13.1) and Bronwyn Mahoney took second in the discus (77-1.5) and second in the shot put (30-9.5) for the Bulldogs.

Mansfield, 55 @ Franklin, 81 – Final – Mansfield junior Madison Haughey was a double winner, taking first in the high jump (4-9) and the 100M hurdles (16.8), junior Angela Corkery finished first in the triple jump (32-4) and second in the long jump (15-2) and freshman Lindsey Goulding won the javelin (78-9). Mansfield’s 4×100 team (Olivia Horn, Emily Quitzu, Angela Corkery, Alexis Kiyanda) and its 4×400 team (Cassidy McMahon, Emma Oldow, Audrey Martin, Caitlin Whitman) both came in first.

North Attleboro, 2 @ Attleboro, 3 – Final (9 inn.) – Attleboro’s Eoin Kelleher reached on an error to start the ninth scored the winning run at Mason Field when Rob Furtado draw a bases-loaded walk. Senior Dylan Maskell had a very strong outing for the Bombardiers, tossing eight innings with five hits allowed, no earned runs and five strikeouts. Kelleher pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win. Attleboro took the lead with two runs in the third but North clawed back with single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game.

Franklin, 12 @ Canton, 4 – Final – Franklin’s offense got going early, plating three runs in each the first and second innings to earn a win over the Bulldogs. Jason Ulrickson earned the win in four innings of work, striking out four with just one earned allowed. Ulrickson also knocked in a pair of runs to help the offense. Both Jake Lyons (three runs, RBI) and Ryan Hodgkins (two runs, two RBI) went 3-for-3 while Cam Benham had two RBI and Matt Foley chipped in with two hits and two runs scored.

Sharon, 3 @ Milford, 4 – Final – Milford senior Nate Irwin threw a complete game, scattering six hits along with one walk while fanning five batters to earn the win. The Scarlet Hawks scored single runs in the first and third and tacked on two more in the fourth. Sharon scored one run in each the first, fourth and sixth innings. Anthony Arcudi (1-for-3, two runs, RBI double), Ryan Goncalves (2-for-4, run) and Alex Coady (1-for-3, RBI double) paced Milford’s offense. Aiden Arnold went 2-for-3 with a double and Drew Naisuler was 2-for-3 with a run for Sharon.

Softball
North Attleboro, 13 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final (5 inn.) – North Attleboro utilized some small ball to pick up its sixth win of the season. Bella Erti struck out two, allowed six hits and walked one in five innings of work in the circle to earn the win for Big Red. Liz Morehouse had a pair of hits and knocked in four runs, Meg Barlow went 3-for-4 and both Andrea Miceli and Erti had two hits. Abby Gallagher and Sam Courtemanche both knocked in a pair of runs for the Rocketeers.

Canton, 0 @ Franklin, 9 – Final – Jackie Cherry and Emily Valentino combined for nine strikeouts in the shutout win over Canton. “It was a solid team win,” said head coach Kate Fallon-Comeau. “Everyone contributed and did their jobs.”

Oliver Ames, 5 @ Mansfield, 11 – Final – Mansfield pounded out 14 hits as a team and got run support for Sarah Cahill early on in a division win. The Hornets played two runs in the first inning, scoring off a single from Kara Bendanillo and a double from Megan Letendre. Mansfield added four runs in the second, capitalizing on singles from Kerran Holmes (3-for-4), Caty DeMassi (two hits) and Liz Mackin (two hits). Mady Bendanillo (two hits) hit a solo home run in the fourth. Sarah Bradley also had two hits for Mansfield. Cahill struck out two, and gave up four hits while earning the win. For Oliver Ames, Katie Abreu was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Victoria Ziner (eight putouts) was 1-for-3 with two runs and Marissa Guarino (1-for-1)
and Lexie Campbell each scored once.

Boys Lacrosse
Attleboro, 11 vs. Norton, 6 – Final – Alex Banner (two goals, three assists) notched a team-high five points while Zach Viau and Andrew Milliken (assist) each recorded a hat trick to pace Attleboro past Norton. Trevor Koppy made 12 saves in net while Matt Potter had nine ground balls.

Foxboro, 5 @ North Attleboro, 6 – Final – North Attleboro scored three goals in the fourth quarter and kept the Warriors off the board to complete the comeback win. The game was tied 2-2 at halftime before Foxboro seized the lead with third goals in the third quarter. However, Big Red scored three unanswered goals, starting with Nick Moore and Jason McNeany (assist). Senior Colin Young scored the game-winner with under three minutes to play. Jack Dakin added two goals, Zach McGowan scored once and had two assists and Owen Costello had one assist. Dan MacDonald made 13 saves in net and also had one assist.

Zac Pfeffer won 6-4, 6-2 at first singles, Barsomo Nuay won 6-1, 6-0 at second singles and Alex Rinaldi won 6-0, 6-1 at third singles. Daniel Zhang and Ben Pfeffer walked away with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first doubles and Andrew Harris and Vikram Senthilakumaran won 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles.

Canton, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – Franklin’s Rahul Herur walked away with a win at first singles after a marathon battle with Canton’s Jake Wolicki. Herur prevailed 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. The team of Gabby Duva and Katie Demontigny won 6-1, 6-1 at first doubles and Leah Marceau and Tara Nair notched a 6-4, 6-1 win at second doubles. Attleboro’s Anna Nelson recorded a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 win at third singles for the Bombardiers.

Franklin, 2 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Franklin dropped just two games in winning first and second singles but Canton’s second doubles team prevailed in three sets to help the Bulldogs earn the win. Hannah Sweeney won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles and Anja Deric won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles for the Panthers. Canton’s team of Stelina Michaelidis and Sarah Hernandez battled back to win 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-0 at second doubles. Sopohomores Val Buonora (800) and Maggie Riley (2 Mile) picked up wins as well.

Attleboro, 3 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – Attleboro senior Tyler McGovern tossed a complete game, scattering six hits while issuing just one walk to guide the Bombardiers past Franklin. James Weir went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI and made a game-ending diving catch in the outfield for Big Blue. Dylan Maskell brought home the third run on a squeeze play. Franklin’s Jake Noviello also threw a complete game, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six. Ryan Hodgkins went 2-for-2 with a run and two stolen bases while Jason Ulrickson also notched two hits.

Canton, 7 @ Foxboro, 4 – Final

King Philip, 0 @ Mansfield, 9 – Final – Mansfield senior Nolan Dousa needed just 70 pitches to finish a complete game shutout and the Hornets’ offense got off to a strong start early on to beat King Philip. Dousa tossed 54 of his 70 pitches for strikes, allowing just four hits and striking out for to earn the win. Mansfield scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, added single runs in the third and fifth and then tacked on two more in the sixth. Zack Peterson (run, RBI) and Kyle Moran (two runs) each had a pair of hits for Mansfield. Aidan Cahill (1-for-3) and Cullen Anastasia (1-for-2, run) each knocked in a pair of runs for the Hornets. King Philip’s Ben Furfari had a pair of hits for the Warriors.

North Attleboro, 7 @ Milford, 3 – Final – North Attleboro broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the fifth inning and then tacked on three more insurance runs in the seventh inning to pick up a key division win. Nick Sinacola picked up the win for Big Red, tossing a complete game with three strikeouts. At the plate, Sinacola went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. John Brennan had a two-run single in the fourth inning that tied the game 3-3. Nick Crawley had a two-run hit in the seventh to tack on North’s final two runs. Milford’s Anthony Arcudi was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Aidan Wilde was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Taunton, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – Oliver Ames senior Sam Burr tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and didn’t issue a walk to help hand Taunton its first loss of the season. Burr struck out three in the win. Kyle Gagliardi was 2-for-3 and turned a double play in the third inning to help OA escape potential danger. Evan DeMartinis was also 2-for-3 while Nick Zwerle was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Stoughton, 13 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Justin Hutchinson was dominant through the first four innings to earn the win and classmate Matt Gallagher completed the shutout with three innings of work with just two hits allowed. Hutchinson allowed just one hit in his four innings of work while striking out seven. Offensively, Ruben Gonzalez had a pair of hits, two runs scored, three stolen bases and four RBI to pace the Black Knights. Ryan Sullivan, Pat Hagerty, and Michael Batte each had two hits for Stoughton.

Softball
Franklin, 1 @ Attleboro, 5 – Final – Attleboro’s McKenzie Bergdoll impressed in the circle and Jordyn Lako played a big role in the offense as the Bombardiers beat Franklin. Bergdoll allowed just two hits in a complete game effort to earn the win. Lako went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Attleboro freshman Mishayla Cullhane took over at catcher in the first inning after an injury and head coach Mark Hoemr said “she did a great job for her first game behind the plate.” Homer added Attleboro’s solid play in the infield made a big difference for the Bombardiers.

Foxboro, 23 @ Canton, 5 – Final

Mansfield, 3 @ King Philip, 9 – Final – King Philip scored five runs in the first to take control in the Kelley-Rex matchup. Jess Bonner had a standout day at the plate for the Warriors, hitting a pair of home runs and totaling five RBI. Jenn Hutnyan allowed just two hits in a strong game in the circle for KP. Meghan Gorman, Hailey McCasland and Elise Pereira each added a pair of hits in the Warriors’ win. Mady Bendanillo drove in all three Mansfield runs with a homer in the third inning, plating Sarah Bradley and Kara Bendanillo, and cut the lead to two. KP added four runs on five hits in the sixth to pull away.

Milford, 14 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final – Milford’s offense was locked in, belting out 17 hits to pick up a key division win over North Attleboro. Jess Tomaso accounted for four of those hits, including a double, and finished with two RBI and two runs scored. Kate Irwin (RBI, two runs, stolen base) and Emily Piergustavo (double, triple, three RBI, three runs) each had three hits for the Hawks. Emily Hartman connected on a solo home run and Shannon Cormier launched a three-run home run to complete Milford’s big day on offense. Ali Atherton scattered five hits in six innings of work, striking out six, allowing one walk and giving up just one earned run.

Oliver Ames, 2 @ Taunton, 13 – Final – Taunton rebounded from a two-game losing streak to pick up the league win. Courtney Fisher threw four innings to get her sixth win and eighth grader Kelsey White threw three scoreless innings in relief, striking out six while allowing just one hit. Eighth grader Hannah Aldrich had three hits for Taunton, while Kya Enos had a homer, a double, and drove in three runs. Jaime Brown (RBI), MacKenzie Handrahan, Katie Van Zandt (RBI), McKenzie McAloon (RBI), and Jaylin Couto (two RBI) all had two hits apiece for Taunton. For Oliver Ames, Sarah Tetrault was 1-for-3 with a run scored, Kayla Georgeu was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Colleen Larson was 1-for-2, putting Georgeu in scoring position for Victoria Ziner (1-3, RBI) to bunt Georgeu in for a run in the second.

Sharon, 0 @ Stoughton, 9 – Final – Gina Carafa picked up the win in the circle, striking out seven Eagles in four innings, and also went 3-for-3 with five RBI, including a three-run homer in the first inning. Jordan Lyons went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Black Knights. Shannon Flaherty, Nikki Coppola, and Brianna Ferrandiz all had two hits apiece for Stoughton. Sam Marglous, Rebecca Clayman, and Courtney Sollis had hits for Sharon.

Franklin, 18 @ Sharon, 2 – Final – Franklin’s offense scored in double figures for the fifth time in the last six games, netting at least 18 for the fourth time in a big win at Sharon. Sam Arsenault (three goals, three assists) and Eric Civetti (five goals, one assist) each had six points to pace the offense. Nitin Chaudhury added two goals and one assists and Johnny O’Glishen and Jake Davis each found the back of the net twice. FHS coach Lou Verrochi praised Pat Morrison, Wyatt Arsenault and Spencer Briggs for their defensive work in front of goalie Connor O’Rourke (one goal allowed).

King Philip, 10 vs. Westwood, 9 – Final

Mansfield, 9 vs. Bridgewater-Raynham, 8 – Final – Bridgewater-Raynham staked a 5-4 lead at halftime but Mansfield ramped up its effort on both ends of the field to get the win. Senior Cullen Murphy (goal and assist) provided the game-winning goal off an assist from Aidan Sacco) Sean Powers had another strong game in goal, recording 16 saves while Grant Milas and Tommy Donnelly had strong games in front of him. Offensively, Hunter Ferreira netted a pair of goals and recorded two assists, Danny DeGirolamo and Sam O’Connell each scored twice, Joe Cox scored once and had two assists and Murphy and Sacco each scored once and had once assist for the Hornets.

Taunton, 4 @ Milford, 12 – Final

North Attleboro, 14 vs. Scituate, 6 – Final – North Attleboro picked up its biggest win of the season, knocking off Scituate at home. Big Red’s starters raced out to a 12-3 lead before the Sailors made a late push. Zach McGowan (one assist) and Jack Dakin (two assists) each scored four goals to pace the Rocketeers’ offense. Tommy Lindstrom set up three goals while LSM Max Fontes and Jason McNeany (14 face off wins) both scored twice. Nick Moore added one goal and one assist, Colin Young had one helper and Andy DeMattio scored once. Senior Dan MacDonald turned away 16 saves while also recording two assists for North Attleboro.

Franklin, 4 @ Notre Dame Academy, 14 – Final – Franklin cut the deficit to just three goals early in the second half but the top-ranked team in the state pulled away with a 7-1 run. Kendall Reardon had two goals while Caroline Lounsbury and Erin Walsh each found the back of the net once. Freshman Gianna Cameron made 10 saves in net.

Milford, 14 @ Taunton, 18 – Final – Eighth grader Alana Tavares scored 13 goals to lead the way for the Tigers. Abbey Kingman and Delaney Powell each scored two goals and Lorna Li made 13 saves in the win. Taylor Dube was the top scorer with five goals, Jill Burley added four goals, and Briana Maietta had a pair of goals, while Amber Stearns made eight saves in the loss.

Oliver Ames, 17 @ Norton, 4 – Final – Oliver Ames snapped four game skid with an impressive performance on both ends on the road at Norton. Olivia Piazza poured in a team-high six goals to pace the offense while Kendall Clifford and Chloe Kikelly each had four goals. Sofia Masciarelli chipped in with two goals for the Tigers. Ari Waldorf made five saves in goal for OA.

Mansfield, 2 @ King Philip, 3 – Final – King Philip picked up comfortable wins at first and third singles as well as second doubles to beat the Hornets. Cole Ginter won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles and Martin Matous won 6-0, 6-1 at third singles for KP. The team of Aidan Ignatius and Marco DiStefano won 6-1, 6-0 at second doubles to get the third and final point. Mansfield’s Luke Nickerson won 6-4, 6-1 at second singles.

Milford, 1 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – North Attleboro won a pair of matches at singles as well as doubles to defend home court against the Scarlet Hawks. Olivia Sweeney won 6-1, 6-1 at first singles, Jordan Pagliuca notched a 6-0, 6-1 at second singles and Jillian Pagliuca recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles. The team of Ashleigh Eason and Emily Moor didn’t drop a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at first doubles and Jordan Martin and Caroline Hebert won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles.

Taunton, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Taunton earned its second sweep of Milford this season, notching a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 win. Taunton head coach Toby Chaperon said sophomore Gabe Kingman had a strong game in the back row for the Tigers while Malik Charles had seven kills and three blocks. Milford senior Jack Winship notched 10 kills, nine digs and four aces while classmate Danny Zwonik had 27 assists and an ace. Sophomore Joao Boaventura added eight kills, six digs and two blocks and sophomore Zach Brown had four kills, three blocks and an ace.

Attleboro, 0 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Junior Tyler Dalton dazzled on the mound, tossing a complete game shutout to lead the Hornets. Dalton allowed just two hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out a season-high 11 batters. Mansfield scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings, totaling seven hits as a team. Zach Peterson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Max Boen was 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and a run scored. Attleboro’s Dylan Maskell also had a solid outing on the mound, throwing six innings with six strikeouts.

Sharon, 5 @ Foxboro, 4 – Final (9 inn.) – Sharon’s offense was quiet for the first six innings but scored in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, eventually prevailing with a one-run victory over Foxboro. Trailing 1-0, the Eagles put up three runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead. Foxboro tied the game in the bottom half to send the game to extra innings. Both Sharon and Foxboro scored a run apiece in the eighth before Sharon scored the final run of the game in the top of the ninth. In the seventh, Aiden Arnold’s leadoff single preceded singles from Ben Stamm (3-for-4, RBI, run) and Jason Hertz. Jake Marglous tied it up with an RBI single. Spencer Singer connected on a two-run double to put the Eagles up 3-1. Foxboro got two back but Hertz threw the would-be winning run out at home to send the game to extras. Stamm knocked in Ben Schwartz in the top of the eighth but Foxboro knotted the game in the bottom half. In the top of the ninth, Arnold drew a lead off walk, stole second and scored on base hit from Jake Teven. Arnold earned the win in relief, and closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Sophomore Noah Kamens had a strong start on the mound, throwing six innings without allowing an earned run while striking out two. “All the kids contributed and the way they fought back in the seventh, eighth and finally the ninth shows incredible resiliency from this group,” said Sharon head coach Kee Arguimbau.

Franklin, 1 @ Milford, 5 – Final – Milford scored in five different innings to pick up its second straight win. The Scarlet Hawks scored single runs in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth against the Panthers. Aidan Wilde tossed a complete game without giving up an earned run, striking out seven and letting up just two hits. Ryan Goncalves went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases, Alex Coady had a home run and Anthony Arcudi was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and two stolen bases.

North Attleboro, 7 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final – North Attleboro’s offense got off to a strong start for the second straight game, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first and second innings, adding two more in the fourth and one more in the sixth inning. Senior Matt Iaconis didn’t allow an earned run in six innings of work, scattering six hits, walking just one batter and striking out three to earn the win. Junior Peter Cohen pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Rocketeers. Junior Nick Sinacola recorded four hits for Big Red, knocking in a pair of runs, Kyle McCarthy had two hits and two RBI and Iaconis also added a pair of hits. OA’s Chris Pearsons had a strong showing in relief, tossing five innings without surrendering an earned run.

Taunton, 7 vs. Durfee, 6 – Final – Taunton rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a walk-off win over non-league rival Durfee. The Tigers took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but Durfee scored four in the top of the second and took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Billy Emerson tied the game in the seventh with a pinch hit single and Chris Gomes knocked in the game-winner with a single. In the first inning, Jacob Crawford (3-for-4) and Matt Machado scored on a double from Christian Simoes. Gomes also had a two-run double in the first inning. Senior Danny Keogh earned the win, tossing three scoreless innings in relief.

Softball
Sharon, 2 @ Foxboro, 1 – Final (8 inn.) – Sharon used extra innings to pick up its first win of the season. Senior catcher Sam Marglous (3-for-5) singled in the top of the eighth to drive in the game-winning run. Clara Cook went the distance to pick up the win, striking out eight and allowing only four hits. Sophomore Alli Small had two hits and scored the opening run in the third inning on a single by classmate Rebecca Clayman. Lexi Buckner tied the game for Foxboro with a solo homer in the sixth and it stayed tied into the eighth.

Milford, 6 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – Milford senior Ali Atherton inherited a two-on, no out situation in a relief appearance and struck out three straight batters to help the Hawks escape danger in the sixth inning. Atherton picked up the save with two innings of work. Kelley Reichert earned the win, striking out five while allowing five hits in five innings of work. At the plate, Maggie Farrell was 2-for-4 with two doubles and Emily Hartman was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Milford head coach Steve DeVitto praised the defense play of shortstop Emily Piergustavo and third baseman Kaitlyn DeCapua.

King Philip, 5 vs. Bishop Feehan, 7 – Final

Oliver Ames, 1 @ North Attleboro, 13 – Final (6 inn.) – North Attleboro’s offense has been clicking lately, scoring 46 runs over the past three games. Bella Erti, who threw a perfect game earlier this week, allowed only one hit and an unearned run, while striking out five. Meg Barlow went 4-for-4 with three RBI for North and Liz Morehouse and Erti both had a pair of hits in the win. For Oliver Ames, Victoria Ziner was 1-for-3 with a run scored and was knocked in by Caroline Mahoney (RBI).

Boys Lacrosse
Stoughton, 2 @ Canton, 14 – Final – Canton baptized its brand new turf with a big win over neighboring Stoughton. The Bulldogs raced out to a 8-1 lead at halftime with a big second quarter and capped its second half scoring with six goals in the third. Joey Vaughan scored the first goal on the new turf as Canton finished with ten different scorers. Sophomore Mike Shaw led with way with four goals and three assists while sophomore midfielder Matt Martin netted his first career goal.

Milford, 0 @ Franklin, 18 – Final

North Attleboro, 11 @ Plymouth North, 5 – Final – For the second straight game, the Rocketeers dominated the second half and came away with a win on the road. North was up 4-3 at half but allowed just two goals in the second half and scored seven goals to beat Plymouth North. Junior Jason McNeany had a dominant day at the face off X, winning 10 of 14 draws while adding two goals and one assist. Tommy Lockavitch also stepped up with a big game defensively, recording four ground balls. Zach McGowan (three goals, four assists) had seven points to pace the offense while Tommy Lindstrom chipped in with two goals and one assist and Colin Young had a pair of helpers. Paul Yeomans added a goal and an assist, Nick Ward, Owen Costello and Nick Moore each had a goal and David James had an assist.

Girls Lacrosse
Franklin, 9 @ Bishop Feehan, 5 – Final – Franklin clamped down defensively, allowing just one goal in the second half to pull away from the Shamrocks. Franklin built a 6-4 lead by the break but won the second half 3-1. Annie Walsh had four goals, Erin Walsh had two goals and Jordan Jette recorded three assists to pace the offense. Freshman Gianna Cameron had five saves in net for the Panthers.

Sharon, 18 @ Taunton, 12 – Final – Sharon had eight players score at least one goal, led by Alex Rabb with five and Christina Linehan added four. Sabrina Robbins added a hat trick for the Eagles and Anna Crosby had a pair of goals. Eighth grader Alana Tavares had four goals for the Tigers, while Abbey Kingman and Delaney Powell each had hat tricks.

Attleboro, 2 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Stoughton avenged a loss to the Bombariders from a week ago, claiming a 3-2 decision in a non-league contest. Stoughton senior Stephens Bontemps won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at first singles, sophomore Erik Anderson won 6-2, 6-4 at second singles and the team of seniors Jon Podesta and Conor Kavanaugh won 6-3, 6-1 at first doubles. Attleboro’s Eli Araujo won 7-5, 6-4 at third singles and Ronaldo Salgueso and Hans Estrada won 6-1, 0-6, 10-7 at second doubles.

Foxboro, 0 @ Sharon, 5 – Final – Sharon senior Griffin Fein had his back against the wall, down to his last point trailing 9-3 in a 10 point tiebreaker. But the defending Hockomock League MVP rattled off eight straight points to win 5-7, 6-3, 11-9 at first singles. Sharon’s Fred Bondar won 6-1, 6-2 at second singles and Danujan Thirumavalavan won 6-4, 6-4 at third singles. The team of senior Alex Romantz and freshman Alberto Olivei won 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles and senior Sammy Kirshenbaum and junior Ashwin Sreevatsa won 6-2, 6-0 at second doubles for the Eagles.

King Philip, 2 vs. Bishop Feehan, 3 – Final – The Warriors were edged out by the Shamrocks in a close match, dropping a close first singles match and then losing in a tiebreaker in doubles play. Attleboro

2016 Record: 13-10
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South Semifinal

Coming off a great run in the state tournament a year ago, the Attleboro Bombardiers will be looking for a repeat performance in 2017. This year, instead of relying on just one or two pitchers, Attleboro will trust the depth of its pitching staff to get things done on the mound.

Senior Tyler McGovern will be the anchor of the staff while classmates Matt Callahan, Dylan Maskell and Tyler Davis will also factor in on the mound. Juniors James Weir, Drew Pagano, Erik McCormick and John Candiales, along with sophomore Eoin Hammel-Kelleher could all see innings on the mound as well.

Callahan will also see time in the field at shortstop while Weir looks to be a reliable option at first base. Matt Marguerite will patrol the outfield while Steve Hamerski, Tyler Davis, Drew Pagano, Sam Larkin and Alex Whittingham are all likely candidates for spots in the outfield as well. Head coach Matt Bosh said there is a lot of internal battles for most positions.

“Every year brings new challenges and elements,” said head coach Matt Bosh. “The biggest difference from last year I think is the depth of the pitching staff. While last year we were top heavy with Nate and Tyler, this year I think we have more guys that can compete and spread the wealth in eating up innings. But we’ll see how that plays out. The Hock will be tough, like always”.

Canton

2016 Record: 11-11

First year head coach Greg Digirolamo likes what he sees from his Bulldogs so far, but the challenge has been finding some grass to play on. Heading into the first week of the season, the weather has prevented the Bulldogs from getting to play outside yet.

Nonetheless, there are some experienced varsity players that will likely factor in right away for Canton. Junior outfielder Matt Casamento might be the most experienced player of the returnees but seniors Jackson Maffeo, Danny Hartnett, Kevin Monagle, Tommy Kilduff and Matt Crandall are all likely to factor in during the season.

A trio of juniors will be Digirolamo’s go-to for pitching to start out the season. Ryan White, Austin Maffie and Rob Wilkenson are all likely to see a lot of innings as the season gets underway.

“It will take the first couple weeks of the season for me to know what we have from a talent perspective,” Digirolamo said. “I will tell you, it only took a week of tryouts to find out I have a good group of kids. They work hard and they’re eager to learn. As a first year coach, that’s all I can ask for right now.”

Foxboro

2016 Record: 8-13
2016 Finish: Reached D3 South Preliminary Round

Foxboro will be looking to get back to the postseason again this year and will rely on its starting pitching and experience to get there.

Hockomock League All Star Aaron Wentling is back on the mound while Colin Thoener – who missed nearly all of last season – is healthy and ready to produce on the mound. Steve McLaughlin, who has some varsity experience, will also get starts on the mound for the Warriors.

There aren’t many players more experienced at the varsity level than catcher Jesse Galanti, who enters his fourth year as a starter and third as captain for Foxboro. Outfielders AJ Bubencik and Cam Feldman have also played a lot of games at the varsity level and will be counted on to lead the way for the Warriors along with infielder Chad Bearce.

“This group has been through a lot of adversity both on and off the field and has shown a ton of resiliency,” said Foxboro head coach Chris Sullivan. “At this point, nothing really fazes these guys they just keep showing up ready to play every day.”

Franklin

2016 Record: 13-10
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South First Round

Between Franklin’s pitching staff and its lineup, there is a lot of experienced players with success at the varsity level ready to go this season.

After relying on a trio of sophomores on the mound last year, all three are back ready for strong junior campaigns. Jake Noviello and Jason Ulrickson logged a lot of innings are starting pitchers while Bryan Woelfel emerged as one of the best bullpen options in the league. Now they are poised to be one of the top starting rotations in the league.

“We are optimistic that the three of them will give us a chance to have a solid rotation this season and be competitive in every game,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “All three guys are very different but all of them are competitive.”

Offensively, Franklin brings back outfielders Ryan Hodgkins (.388) and Jake Lyons (.368) along with first baseman Josh Macchi (16 RBI) and catcher Tyler Gomes (16 RBI). While there are spots to fill left by talented seniors that graduated, having those four back is a very good sign for the Panthers.

King Philip

2016 Record: 15-6
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South First Round

It’s going to be a challenge for King Philip to replace three all-star caliber pitchers in one season, but head coach Pat Weir and his Warriors are ready to try.

Jake Cavanagh, Jack DiCenso and Jon Rolfe are all pitching at the collegiate now after helping guide the Warriors to a Kelley-Rex title a season ago. This season, Stephen Murray and Chris Wing are back as two of the more experienced arms available for Weir. Will Weir, known for his bat and defensive play at shortstop, could also emerge as an option on the mound.

Will Weir is also one of the key bats back for King Philip, along with senior centerfielder Ryan Coulter. Both had impressive seasons as juniors and will be relied to lead the way in 2017 for KP.

“I’m hopeful we can improve on yesterday and compete today, all we ask is all you got,” said head coach Pat Weir.

Mansfield

2016 Record: 9-11
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs

After just missing out on the postseason a year ago, there is a lot of optimism for the 2017 Hornets squad. With two top pitchers and a solid lineup returning, there’s plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

One main reason is the return of senior pitcher Nolan Dousa, who missed last year after undergoing Tommy John surgery. After a standout sophomore campaign, Dousa had to watch last season from the dugout. With Dousa on the self, sophomore Tyler Dalton emerged as the team’s ace, giving the Hornets a great 1-2 combination for 2017.

Offensively, the Hornets bring back shortstop Max Boen – one of the team’s top hitters a season ago – along with senior outfielder Zach Peterson, who led the team in runs last year, and senior infielder Aidan Cahill.

“We look to combine the experience of our senior class with the ambition of our underclassmen to create a competitive team for the upcoming season,” said head coach Joe Breen. “Our goal is to be the hardest working, most passionate high school baseball team in the state and let the pieces fall where they may.”

Milford

2016 Record: 8-12
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs

Milford will be looking to get off to a better start in 2017 after a slow one a year ago played a big part in the Scarlet Hawks missing out on the postseason.

The good news for head coach Paul Pellegrini is that he has the majority of his impactful players back this season. Senior Alex Macek really impressed after missing the beginning part of the season with injury and could be one of the top pitchers in the league this season. Tylor Renaud also provided quality innings a year ago.

Aidan Wilde has been one of the top players in this league for two years yet he’s only a junior this season. Not only is he very good defensively, he’s one of the toughest at-bats in the league and will certainly be a spark plug for the Hawks. Expect senior Anthony Arcudi and sophomore Alex Coady to be contributions this season as well.

North Attleboro

2016 Record: 7-13
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs

The Rocketeers will boast a young squad, but not one that lacks in talent. After graduating 13 seniors last year, Big Red will rely heavily on the players they do have returning this season.

The strength of the squad will be up the middle of the field, starting senior captain Kyle McCarthy in centerfield, senior captain John Brennan patrolling shortstop and junior Zach DeMattio – and his big bat – manning the catcher position. From there, each spot is open for competition according to head coach Paul Tobin. Matt Iaconis and Peter Cohen are competing for time at third while Nick Crawley, Aidan Harding, Billy Drummond, Jackson Billingkoff and Nick Sinacola are all batting for infield spots.

Nick Sinacola, Nathan Pearce, Aidan Harding and Matt Iaconis are all candidates to form Big Red’s starting rotation while Peter Cohen, Ryan Prince and Ryan Pasquel are likely to see time out of the bullpen.

“We are talented but inexperienced, so there will be some learning and growing to go through,” said head coach Paul Tobin.

Oliver Ames

2016 Record: 11-11
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round

Oliver Ames has a lot of players back from a year ago and first year head coach Joe Abarr believes that should translate into a potent lineup for the Tigers.

2016 HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year Matt Muir will be captaining the team as a junior and will make the transition from second base to shortstop. He will likely fill the leadoff role for Oliver Ames and will also see time on the mound. Senior Sam Burr is also a team captain, will be the team’s number one starter and also man first base for the Tigers.

Sophomore third baseman Chris Pearsons is back after making some noise during his freshman year and senior Kyle Gagliardi will bring a lot of experience while he patrols center field for the Tigers. Michael Mulrean will see a lot of time on the mound again this year and sophomore catcher Jake Erlich will look to give the Tigers a boost after transferring from Xaverian this year.

“We should hit this year with lots of players with power potential,” Abarr said. “Our pitching staff is very deep with an abundance of arms available from day to day. The challenge will be writing the right lineup. We have a solid infield with underclassmen that should be able to get comfortable in their positions over the next couple of years.”

Sharon

2016 Record: 2-18
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs

The Eagles had a lot of young pieces a year ago and will be looking to take the next step in 2017. Leading the way will be two three-year varsity players in captains Jake Marglous and Aiden Arnold.

Marglous will be back behind the plate for another season while Arnold, one of the top power hitters in the league, will be back at first and also be an option to come in to pitch in relief situations. Other returning Eagles with varsity experience include Jake Teven, Danny Emerman, Jason Hertz, Ben Schwartz, Drew Naisuler, Ben Stamm, Brad Zongetti and Spencer Singer.

Max Tarlin had a very strong season as a sophomore a year ago and will be at the top of the rotation as a junior this season. Sophomore Noah Kamens also picked up some valuable varsity time a year ago and will be a top option for Sharon this season.

“Our strength will be in the experience we have in our pitching staff,” said head coach Kee Arguimbau. “We’re looking forward to the season behind the leadership of our captains, Jake Marglous and Aiden Arnold.

Stoughton

2016 Record: 16-7
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South Semifinals

There aren’t many teams in the area that have the luxury of returning their top three pitchers, but the Black Knights of Stoughton do.

Justin Hutchinson, Ryan Sullivan and Nico Parmeggiani are all back after stellar junior seasons on the mound, putting Stoughton is a good position to start the season. Luke Johnson will also see time on the mound, adding another experienced arm for the Black Knights.

Jack Connelly is back at first base after a breakout junior season, Ruben Gonzalez will shift over to take over at shortstop while Matt Hadley and Michael Batte will both see time in the infield as well. Both Hutchinson and Sullivan will see time in the outfield when they aren’t pitching while Pat Hagerty and Nick Hardy are back as well. Johnson and sophomore Evan Gibb will battle for the starting catcher spot.

“We have a lot of experience returning, with 10 seniors on the roster, and look forward to competing in the always tough Hockomock League,” said head coach Mike Armour.

Taunton

2016 Record: 14-7
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South First Round

While there is a new coach in the dugout for the Tigers, there will be a lot of the same faces on the field for Taunton in 2017.

Blair Bourque takes over the reigns for the Tigers, who also lost league MVP Luke Figueira to graduation. However, Matt Machado and Joe Manchester are back in the outfield, Jacob Crawford is back in the middle infield, Jimmy Hoye is back and ready to take over as starting catcher, and Danny Keogh and Jack Moynihan return as two experienced pitchers.

With the battle for the number one pitcher open, Keogh and Moynihan will be the main two options to begin the season.

“Both of these guys saw success last year pitching at the varsity level and we are looking to continue and build on that success,” Bourque said.

Machado, one of the top defensive players in the league, had a breakout junior season at the plate and will look to be one of the top offensive producers again this season. Manchester shined in his sophomore season and will give the Tigers some power in the middle of the lineup. Crawford is easily one of the best defensive infielders in the league and Hoye will look to prove he’s one of the top catchers.

Attleboro Bats Off to Cold Start at Feehan

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Attleboro baseball team traveled a couple of minutes across town to Beach Field to face rival Bishop Feehan on Saturday afternoon. Weather had forced a delay to the start of the season for the Bombardiers and had severely limited their ability to get outside and practice.

On Saturday, Attleboro looked like a team that was seeing its first action of the spring, especially at the plate where the Bombardiers were limited to only four hits by a pair of Shamrocks pitchers, and fell 5-1.

Junior Matt Callahan made the first start of his varsity career, giving up three runs on five hits over four innings of work. Although Callahan took the loss, Attleboro coach Matt Bosh pointed to the lack of offensive punch as the main reason for falling to 0-1 on the season.

“He did alright,” said Bosh of Callahan. “We just didn’t hit the ball…and we threw the ball around a little bit, more than we should have.”

He added, “Give them credit. Their pitchers pitched well, hit spots and we just didn’t put the ball in play enough.”

Attleboro had a chance in its opening at bat to get on the board. Cam Hochwarter led off with a single to left but with one out was forced out on a grounder by Nate Tellier, who took second on a balk. Patrick Collins followed with a walk but Nolan Kane grounded out to short to end the threat.

Jon Dunn reached on an error in the top of the second but was caught stealing third on a missed bunt attempt and would be the last baserunner for the Bombardiers until the fifth inning. Feehan starter Zack Newman settled down and struck out four over 4-1/3 innings.

“We just didn’t put the ball in play enough,” said Bosh. “We didn’t force mistakes by them, not enough contact.”

Meanwhile, Callahan got off to a great start. He needed only 11 pitches to get through a perfect first and 11 more in the second in which he allowed just a two out single.

In the third, Feehan took the lead. After Callahan got the first two hitters to ground out, he hit lead-off batter Matt Everton in the foot. Jake Bamford followed with a single to right moving Everton over to third and then Jason Medeiros drilled a pitch into the gap in left center plating both runners.

The Shamrocks added another run in the fourth when Reid Spears, who had singled with one out, raced home from third on a wild pitch.

Attleboro finally got something going in the top of the fifth. Dunn singled to center, his second time reaching base in as many plate appearances. John Burns followed with a single and Dunn took third. Brandon Galvao would plate the Bombardiers lone run with a fielder’s choice to short and advanced to second when the ball was thrown away.

Newman walked pinch hitter Dylan Maskell to put two on with one out. Pat Cashin came in from shortstop to take over on the mound and he promptly induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play from Hochwarter to get out of the jam.

Feehan plated another run off of Maskell in the bottom of the inning, but Attleboro came right back and had the first two on to start the sixth on a double by Will Carter and a walk to Nate Tellier. Again, Cashin made his pitches and Nolan Kane bounced into a double play to end the inning.

The Shamrocks wrapped up the scoring in the bottom half. Bamford drove in Jake Bernhardt with a single off Dylan Prout. The ball died in the lengthy grass, allowing Bernhardt to score from second without a throw.

“I’m sure they didn’t have a chance to cut all week because of the snow and the rain,” said Bosh about the grass at Beach Field. “Usually, it’s sort of a fast track but today everybody was coming in full sprint on ground balls.”

Burns got his second hit of the game with one out in the seventh, but Cashin got a grounder and then caught Prout looking on a breaking ball to end the game.

“We had three scrimmages last week but we haven’t seen live pitching since Thursday of last week, so we’re going on 10 days,” Bosh explained. “Hopefully that’s going to come. We’ve got three games next week…we’ll be alright. I’m not worried.”

Attleboro will not have much time to dwell on it, as the Bombardier will be back on the diamond on Monday against Milford. Bosh is confident that his team will get the bats going.

“The Hock is loaded this year…every game is going to be a battle,” he said. “We’ve got Milford on Monday and they’re going to be good, so we’ll be right back at it.”

ATTLEBORO

2015 Record: 8-12
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Matt Bosh

A rough end to the 2015 campaign kept the Bombardiers out of the postseason last year but with 11 seniors and a good amount returning experienced players, Attleboro is looking to get back to the playoffs this year.

“We have a lot of returning varsity players from last year, and we have three two-year captains, four [captains] overall,” head coach Matt Bosh said. “The positive thing is that even though we have a lot from last year’s team back, there is still a lot of competition for playing time, which will hopefully bring out the best in all of our kids.”

Both Nate Tellier and Tyler Stowe are returning three year starters and captains this season, alongside seniors Will Carter and Jon Dunn. Tellier is one of the best shortstops in the league and led the Bombardiers in hitting last season with a .357 average and 14 runs scored. Tellier will also be a force on the mound after recording a 1.44 ERA in 34 innings last season. Stowe will man first base when he isn’t pitching.

Matt Callahan, Cam Hochwarter, Brandon Galvao and Robbie Araujo will all see time in the infield along with Tellier and Stowe and juniors Dylan Maskell and Dylan Prout should also fit in the infield. Will Carter returns behind the plate while Dunn patrols centerfield. Pat Collins, Brent Cook and John Burns are all likely candidates to see time in left and right.

Along with Tellier and Stowe on the mound, Dunn, Galvao, Callahan, Prout, Maskell, Nolan Kane, Tyler McGovern and James Weir should see time.

FRANKLIN

2015 Record: 16-8
2015 Finish: Reached D1 South Semifinals

The Panthers reached the D1 South Semifinals last year but there will be some voids left from graduation that Franklin needs to fill in order to get back there.

“We have a lot of positions up for grabs,” head coach Zach Brown said. “But I’m really excited about the opportunity we have this season. We have a lot of new talented players that are competing hard for playing time and open positions and roles. We will be relying on some younger guys, sophomores and juniors, to help fill some critical positions. Competition during practice and scrimmages has been intense. I think we have a unique blend of veterans and a new influx of talent. I’m very optimistic about what this team can become by the end of the season.”

The talent that Franklin does have back is a good group with Alex Bissanti returning at second base, Mike Skaza back to pitch and patrol the outfield, Nick Santucci at shortstop, Tyler Gomes will move to catcher full time and Jake Lyons will handle centerfield duties. Joe Corsi will handle a variety of roles and Josh Macchi will take over first base.

Franklin graduated 10 seniors from last year’s squad that included the entire pitching rotation and closer. Brown noted sophomores Jake Noviello and Matt Foley will see time on the mound this season.

KING PHILIP

2015 Record: 5-15
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Pat Weir

King Philip has seven seniors and seven juniors on its roster this year and a good chunk of that experience comes on the mound.

“I can say in my short three years at KP this current group is the most cohesive group I’ve been around,” head coach Pat Weir said. “Solid senior leadership, solid team chemistry and competition is very healthy.”

Jake Lannigan, Jake Cavanagh, Jon Rolfe and Jack DiCenso are all seniors that have experience on the mound. Rolfe notched a 1.80 ERA in 35 innings last year while striking out 26 while Cavanaugh tossed over 41 innings, striking out 35 with a 2.88 ERA. Rolfe is also the top returning hitter after hitting .302 last year.

Leo Munafo returns as the starting catcher and Will Weir is back at shortstop for another year. Stephan MacMeans had a strong year in the outfield last season and will patrol centerfield again this season. All four senior pitchers previously mentioned will all see time in the field as well.

MANSFIELD

2016 Record: 17-6
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South Final
Coach: Joe Breen

Last season was a banner year for first year head coach Joe Breen and the Hornets as Mansfield won its first league title since 2007 and reached the D1 South Finals. But last year is already in the rearview mirror for the 2016 Hornets.

“After a great season last year, we are a whole new team,” head coach Joe Breen said. “We have a talented group of multi-sport athletes that look to transition from the JV ranks to the varsity ranks this spring. We have some great senior leaders at the top and quite a bit of young talent to fill in the holes left by last year’s large graduating class. I’m excited to see what players breakthrough in our pre-season practices and scrimmages.”

Key returnees include senior catcher Mike Arnold, senior first baseman Tyrone Pascual and senior center fielder Charlie DeMassi. Expect each of them to be in the top of the order. DeMassi showed off his defensive prowess in the center last season and will be a key piece this year.

The biggest question mark for the defender Kelley-Rex champions will be pitching. Breen said he will be looking for seniors Jared Menzer, Jack Neureter and Michael Kirejczyk to step up alongside sophomore Tyler Dalton.

North Attleboro

2015 Record: 8-12
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Paul Tobin

Last season ended far from how Big Red had planned when they dropped nine of their last 10 games to miss out on the playoffs. But head coach Paul Tobin brings back his two top pitchers and a solid group of experienced seniors.

“This is a smart, good-character group who are fun to coach,” Tobin said. “The middle of the lineup should hit. If we get production from some of our new players and the expected contributions from our returning veterans we should be in the thick of the race.”

Seniors John O’Donnell and Andy Katch are back on the mound for the Rocketeers. O’Donnell logged over 36 innings on the mound last year with a 2.89 ERA and 23 strikeouts. Ridge Olsen is back and will patrol left field after batting a team-high .433 last year with 13 RBI and Brian Kleczkowski returns to first base after hitting .321 last year with 16 RBI.

Junior catcher Tyler LaFreniere is also back along with second baseman Brian Poillucci and centerfielder Bryan Harris. Tobin noted junior Brett Cloutier, junior John Brennan and sophomore Zach DeMattio will factor in this season.

TAUNTON

2015 Record: 14-8
2015 Finish: Reached D1 South Quarterfinals
Coach: Jeff Sylvia

Taunton has had a lot of success since joining the Hockomock League and head coach Jeff Sylvia is hopeful that will continue this year. With a handful of very good players back, it’s likely that will continue.

“Our goal is to be better on April 30th than March 30th,” Sylvia said. “And then even better on May 30th.”

Taunton brings back Luke Figueira, who was the 2014 HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year as a sophomore and then was one of the league’s best all around players last year as a junior. Figueira batted a team-high .500 with 15 RBI and pitched over 35 innings with 51 strikeouts, posting a 1.78 ERA. Jose Mercado will see an expanded role on the mound after striking out 25 in 18 innings last year.

Max Bowden returns behind the plate and will also be back as the closer after four saves and a 1.62 ERA last year. Sylvia also has Brendon Mazzerole back, who was selected to the HockomockSports.com First Team as a third maseman last year. Mazzerole will shift to short this year and will look to build upon his .429 average from last year.

Senior Kevin Griffin also brings back some experience while seniors Charles Hearrold III and Dan Noonan and junior Danny Keogh will try to make an impact this season. Sylvia is also looking for sophomores Joe Manchester and Jacob Crawford to slide into roles early on.
