FOXBORO, Mass. – Foxboro erased a nine point second half deficit and slammed the door shut with a dominant fourth quarter to beat Milford, 66-48, and clinch the Davenport Division title outright.
The Warriors held a one point lead at halftime but trailed by as much as nine points in the third quarter and entered the fourth with trailing by one.
Foxboro used a 23-4 fourth quarter to pull away and clinch the program’s first outright league title since 2003.
“Give credit to Milford, they’ve got some very talented scorers and some very talented guards and they made some tough shots,” Foxboro head coach Jon Gibbs said. “They’ve been playing really well lately, they had won six of the last seven coming in. I’ve seen them lately have some really big quarters and big halves offensively where they just make shot after shot and that happened some here today. I thought our defense was pretty good for the most part and they just made some contested shots. But I was really proud of the way we fought through the adversity.”
The Scarlet Hawks embarked on a 13-3 run to open the second half and take their biggest lead of the contest. Senior Dimitry Torres (game-high 18 points plus six assists) started the run with a pair of free throws and then found Austin Albano for a corner three to go up 31-29. Zack Tamagni drained a three, Torres found Dwight Anderson for a layup and then Torres found Anthony Arcudi for a three to make it 39-30 with 3:53 to play in the third.
Foxboro was inch back, closing out the quarter on a 13-5 run with all points coming from seniors. Alex DuBrow and Jason Procaccini each scored four points, Jonathan Carnino hit a corner trey late in the shot clock to start the run and Rob Lowey scored off a nice post move.
It didn’t take long for the Warriors to assume the lead in the final quarter with DuBrow — who scored 12 of his 16 points in the final quarter — driving and laying one up and under on Foxboro’s first possession to go up by one. Foxboro never trailed again.
“Falling behind and losing the momentum in the third quarter we could have folded, we could have quit but he hung in there, we stayed with the plan defensively and we picked up our energy level and we were able to execute on offense and start making some plays,” Gibbs said. “I was really proud of the way we hung in there and came back and that’s what good teams do. We’ve been able to fight through it more as the season has gone on and that’s something that can help us when we get to the state tournament.
“I told the guys we’ll find our rhythm eventually on offense and eventually we’ll knock down shots but we had to lock them down and not let them score. I told them if we could lock them down defensively then eventually we’ll catch up and get the lead and I think we did a good job of that. I think we started to get some offense off of our defense when we lifted our energy up.”
Procaccini’s three point play preceded his assist to DuBrow at the top of the arc for a three. DuBrow came away with a steal and easy bucket before the Warriors used the same play – finding Procaccini on the baseline for a kick out to DuBrow for a three to put the run at 13-2.
Sophomore Joe Morrison had back to back steals that resulted in two points from DuBrow, a putback from Lowey off a missed three and a Procaccini layup stretched the run to 19-2. Foxboro went on to win the final quarter 23-4.
“You can’t have a quarter like that against the league champions and expect to win the game,” Milford head coach Paul Seaver said. “I thought we played well for three quarters but things just dominoed for us from there.”
While DuBrow had 12 points in the final frame, all 16 of them came in the second half. He had six assists in the first half and finished with eight overall along with five rebounds.
“He really just put us on his back,” Gibbs said of DuBrow. “He’s a tremendous player, he’s a special player and I think what you saw tonight was just how valuable he is to our team. When we were down and we were in a tough spot and we really needed a spark and someone to make some tough plays and produce, the way he can step up and put the team on his back. Whether it’s making a big basket or making a big pass or a big steal. All of a sudden, when we needed him the most, he was all over the place on both ends of the court. That’s why he’s such a special player and that’s why we’ve been so successful.”
Procaccini finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, Lowery had 15 points and nine rebounds and Mark Clagg chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds. The Warriors had a 34-18 edge in rebounding.
Foxboro boys basketball (16-4, 12-3) will close out the season by hosting Sharon in search of avenging a loss to the Eagles in late January. Milford (9-10, 6-9) finishes the regular season by hosting Canton. With a win, the Scarlet Hawks will qualify for the state tournament.
“Our goal the whole season was to get to the state tournament,” Seaver said. “We’ve grinded through a lot all season and we’ve put ourselves in a position to get there. Now we have to win to get there on Monday so it’s essentially a playoff game and we’re going to treat it like that.”

Consistent Offense Propels Mansfield Past Milford

By Josh Schafer, HockomockSports.com Student Reporter
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Milford came out firing with a 10-2 run. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Hawks, it was the next big run that would decide the game.
Mansfield responded with dominating play, outscoring Milford 50-13 over the next two and a half quarters to come away with a 57-33 victory.
Milford began the game shooting well, hitting their first four shots. The Scarlet Hawks began the game playing aggressive defense which gave Mansfield little room to work. After consecutive threes from Dwight Anderson (11 points) and Zack Tamagni, the Scarlet Hawks found themselves with an early eight point lead.
With their backs against the wall, the Hornets looked to juniors Matt Ehrlich and Phil Vigeant to carry them out of the hole. The two combined for the Hornets’ next seven points and in the blink of an eye the Milford lead was all but erased. Anderson hit two big threes as the quarter carried on, keeping the Scarlet Hawks within striking distance.
In the closing seconds of the quarter Kyle Swansburg hit a momentum building layup while getting fouled to set up a five point possession for the Hornets. Swansburg’s free throw attempt missed allowing and Christian Weber grabbed the loose ball and hit an open three to give the Hornets a 22-16 lead after the first quarter.
“When we got deeper into some possessions, moved the ball, and just stuck with what we do, shots started to fall for us,” Mansfield coach Mike Vaughan said.
Mansfield owned the second quarter, outscoring Milford 14-3 in the frame. It was stellar team play that led to the Hornets finding ways to break through the stout Milford defense. Mansfield facilitated the ball around the court at a rapid pace forcing Milford’s defense to overcommit and become out of position. The Hornets exploited the holes in Milford’s defense with accurate outside shooting led by Ehrlich (team high 11 points), who contributed seven second quarter points. Baskets from Tyler Boulter and Sam Goldberg extended the Hornets lead into double digits as they entered halftime leading 36-19.
“I thought Matt played really well early and in the second half some other guys stepped in and did some good things,” Vaughan commented.
Consistency was the key for Mansfield tonight as they started the second half right where they left off as four different Hornets scored to begin the third quarter. Milford battled to get open looks on offense but could not seem to find their stroke. Mansfield took care of the boards, led by Hornet big man Sam Goldberg (10 points, 9 rebounds).
“We’ve been trying to be more consistent as the second half of the season carries on, and I thought we did a pretty good job on both ends of the floor,” Vaughan added.
Milford managed to keep the Hornet offense at bay in the fourth quarter but unfortunately for the Scarlet Hawks it was too little too late as the Hornets rolled to a 57-33 victory. With tonight’s win Mansfield officially qualified for the state tournament.
Vaughan commented on his team’s’ current position in saying, “ I like where we are at as a team. We just have to continue to get better and improve. We want to be playing our best ball in March.”
Mansfield (11-4) will look to continue playing their best basketball on Friday night against Taunton (12-3) in a game that will have major implications on the Kelley Rex division title race.
Milford (5-9) will look to get back to their winning ways as they travel to division leader Foxboro (12-3) on Friday night.

Hot Shooting Scarlet Hawks Take Down Rocketeers

By Ryan Lanigan, Editor-in-Chief
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the third straight game, Milford was on fire from downtown.
For the third straight game, the Scarlet Hawks made double-digit threes and their hot shooting helped pick up a 75-63 win over North Attleboro to pick up consecutive wins for the first time since 2013.
“We hit shots, that’s it really,” Milford head coach Paul Seaver said. “We hit shots on Friday and we hit shots tonight. Dee Torres has been our catalyst. I think he started it off with the first three of the game. When you hit shots, everything just got a lot more smoothly.”
Milford opened the game with a pair of three pointers from Dimitry Torres but really opened things up over the last four and a half minutes of the first quarter. With the game tied 7-7, the Scarlet Hawks rattled off a 15-0 run over the next three minutes, suddenly building a 22-7 lead.
Sophomore Kayden Kelley was responsible for eight of the points in the run and junior Zack Tamagni handled the other seven, including Milford’s third three of the quarter, to create a big lead. Brent Doherty and Chad Peterson stole a little momentum back with a three each just before the end of the quarter.
But the momentum quickly swung back in favor of the Scarlet Hawks. Over the first four plus minutes of the second quarter, a 12-4 run capped by a three from Torres. A three from Nate Davila was followed by a layup and a free throw from Dwight Anderson. Josh Andonian drained a corner three before Torres’ capping shot from downtown.
“That’s been our been our MO recently,” Seaver said of making three point shots. “That’s something we didn’t have two or three weeks ago. I think our average was like five or so three’s and now we’re averaging double figures the last couple of games.”
The Scarlet Hawks finished with 12 three pointers for the second straight game (hitting the same mark in a 68-50 win over Canton on Friday) and hitting 10 against Franklin this past Tuesday.
North finished with a 6-2 run to conclude the first half to cut the deficit to 12 at halftime, trailing 36-24.
Milford again continued its hot streak, starting the third quarter with a 9-2 run to creates its largest lead of the game at that point. Tamagni and Kelley each had a basket while Torres his a three and and went to the hoop for two more to put Milford up 45-26.
“I think they’ve rejuvenated themselves,” Seaver said. “We were playing hard but we weren’t getting the results we wanted in that six game stretch. Now shots are falling and the confidence is going up.”
The Rocketeers showed some fight one the final three minutes with a run of their own. A put back from Mario Bresko and a layup was sandwiched around a three from Brent Doherty Two more from Bresko cut the lead back to 12. Milford called a timeout and out of it, an offensive foul on Big Red turned into a three from Andonian and with the clock ticking away the final seconds of the third, Alex Macek pulled up for another three to make it 53-35 after three.
Doherty scored nine of his game-high 21 points in the final quarter and Bresko added 10 of his 17 points in the final frame but the deficit proved to be too much. Milford added a trio of threes in the final quarter as well.
Over the final three periods, Milford had just a three point advantage. But a nine point lead after the first quarter proved to be the key to the separation.
“Give Milford all the credit in the world,” North Attleboro head coach Sean Mulkerrins said. “We knew they would pressure us, we prepared for that even though it didn’t look like it at times. I think our kids got a little shellshocked early. I’m not sure if we were as prepared for that zone as we should have been. I think it had a little to do with the moment and the arena and a lot to do with Milford making shots and attacking the glass early. We were playing on our heels and it started to seep into our offense. We started taking early threes, forgetting plays, forgetting defensive assignments. When you put yourself in that big of a hole it’s tough to come back from.”
North Attleboro had been averaging over 60 points a game but through three quarters was stuck at 35 points, which can be credited to Milford’s press and zone defense. It was only after a 28 point fourth quarter they were able to get the offense in gear.
“We were switching defenses all game – box and one, 2-3 zone, man – we played them all,” Seaver said. “We switched up our two presses too. It was our goal to just keep them on their heels and I think we did a good job for a while. They ended up scoring the ball still, they’ve got some shooters and some offensive talent and you just have to stick with them until the end of the game.”
Defensively, the Rocketeers entered allowing just 58 points per game. Milford’s 75 points was the most allowed all season.
“The biggest disappointment was in our defensive effort,” Mulkerrins said. “You just can’t give up 75 points. The threes I think started us to break some of our rules. The kids would worry about the threes then we’re not in help position, then we’re late there and they can kick it out. It all just spiraled from there.
“I’ve been saying we can beat anyone on our schedule but I always say but anybody can beat us. We can’t show up certain nights against certain teams and be there mentally and physically and then other nights lay an egg. I feel for the kids cause this was a great event and big opportunity but this was still a game we had to play but we just didn’t execute.”
Kayden Kelley finished with a career-high 16 points and added eight rebounds, Torres added 16 points, Andonian had a career-high 11 points and Tamagni had 10 points. Doherty had five rebounds and five assists along with his 21 points and Bresko added three rebounds with his 17 points. Junior Jonny Friberg had nine points and four rebounds.
Milford (5-8, 4-7) will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Mansfield in the second game of a doubleheader, slated for 6:45. North Attleboro (5-8, 4-7) will try to snap its current four game skid when they travel to Stoughton on Tuesday night at 6:30.
