The North Attleboro wrestling program has been one of the most successful in the state since its inception in 1987, and the past decade was no exception. And one of the most successful seasons in its history came in 2016 as the Rocketeers won championships at multiple levels and set numerous program records.

The Rocketeers posted a 24-1 record that season, dominating competition against in-state foes with its lone loss against national powerhouse Mt. Anthony out of Vermont. Not only did the group go unbeaten against Hockomock League opponents to claim the Davenport division title, North Attleboro claimed a handful of tournament wins including the Marshfield Holiday Tournament, and tournaments held at Whitman-Hanson and Cumberland (RI). At the Hockomock Championships meet, four Rocketeers won individual titles and North Attleboro won with an impressive 254 points.

“It’s only a target if you believe it is,” said North Attleboro head coach Wayne Griffin after winning the Hockomock Championship meet. Assistant coaches that season were Dan Thibeault, Ray Sturdy, Geoff Burgess, and Andrew McDonald. “We talked about it this morning. I told the kids that there will be a target on our backs but we can’t worry about it. We just have to focus on today, focus on wrestling today, and get through each match one at a time. I think it’s helped the kids keep perspective as each day goes by. We can’t worry about other things, we had to focus on getting through today first.”

After tying the program for wins in a season (24), North Attleboro continued its success in the postseason. At the D2 South Sectional meet, 10 Rocketeers reached the finals (out of 14 total weight classes) and five went to win sectional titles to help the team post 287.5 points, over 80 more than second-place Hingham. In total, the Rocketeers had 14 grapplers finish top five and it was the program’s 16th sectional title. Alex Devitto (126), Nick Gould (145), Jack Donahue (170), Nick Morrison (182), and Brennan Sankey (285) each walked away a sectional champion.

North Attleboro went on to win the Massachusetts Interscholastic Wrestling Coaches Association (MIWCA) D2 Dual Meet tournament as well as the MIAA D2 State Championship, a display of how well rounded the group was. Although the Rocketeers didn’t have an individual champion at the D2 State meet, North Attleboro’s depth was on full display as three Rocketeers reached the finals and eight members of the group finished top six for a total of 141 points; Central Catholic finished second with 111 points.

The program received the GoldLevel Academic Excellence Award for the 15th time that year, recorded the most pins (316) and wins (534) in a single season in program history and Devin Spratt (120) set the career record for most pins with 91. The MIWCA honored Mike Renzi with its Hall of Fame Award and the coaches were honored by The Boston Globe as Coaches of the Year.

TAUNTON, Mass. – For the second straight year, North Attleboro picked up a dominating win at the Hockomock League Championships, topping the tournament with an impressive 254 points.
Oliver Ames finished second with 183, Franklin was third with 171, Sharon had 161 to finish fourth and Foxboro rounded out the top five with 155 points.
Well before the finals even began, Big Red had a big lead but continued to add to it. The Rocketeers had a wrestler in half of the finals and finished with six champions on the day.
“It was a great senior moment for a lot of the kids, especially the boys that finished first,” North Attleboro head coach Wayne Griffin said. “It’s a great opportunity for the rest of our team as a learning tool too. That’s what today was really about for us, we still have some issues that we have to keep working on and keeping working on and keep working on. We’ve still got another month of wrestling or so, it’s one day at a time.”
It took less than two minutes in the 120 bout for North Attleboro to crown its first champion. Devin Spratt, who is climbing the all-time wins ladder for the Rocketeers, pinned Phil Dure at 1:45 of the first round to earn his second straight Hock title.
Starting at 145, the Rocketeers picked four wins in five bouts. Nick Gould came away with ta last second win to get the title. He trailed 8-3 after two periods but a takedown from Stoughton’s Devlin Carroll pushed the lead to 8-2. In the final 30 seconds, Gould had an escape, near fall and a takedown to complete the comeback. Colin Fiske followed that up at 152 with a 4-0 decision – a takedown in the first and a reversal late in the second – avenging an earlier season loss to King Philip’s Anthony Fruci.
“Colin Fiske had a big one,” Griffin said. “He had lost to Fruci earlier in the season so we’re very excited for him. That was probably the biggest standout of the day for us. I’m really happy for Colin. We worked on changing his style a little bit coming into today. We keep trying to fine tune things and all try to can do a better job. I don’t want to to be the coach who didn’t try his darndest to help our kids be successful.”
The Rocketeers didn’t have anyone in 160 but in the 170 match, Big Red got another win. Jack Donahue built a 7-2 lead after one and then after a reversal in the second period, the senior was able to get the pin. Senior Nick Morrison then got a 6-4 win at 182 – his second straight league title in the weight class. A takedown in the first and a pair of escapes in the third helped Morrison edge Milford’s Ryan Gray.
Brennan Sankey then capped North’s day with a first round pin in the heavyweight division.

“Success is a nice thing, but it’s a lot of work,” Griffin said. “We have of great moms and dads and we’ve got some really good administrators that support our efforts. As much as I like the winning piece, it’s all about taking things one day at a time.”
Other placements for North included a third place finish for Jordan Tillinghast at 160, fourth place finishes from Brady Folan (106), Brandon Graveline (132) and Leo Thibeault (220). Coming in fifth place for Big Red were Jake Direnzo (113) and Alex Devitto (126).
The Rocketeers, who are 19-1 on the season and now have three tournament wins, knew that teams would be coming to try and score the upset.

Oliver Ames finished second and recorded the most points in program history at the Hockomock League Championships with 183. The total was nearly 40 more points than their previous high, which was recorded back in 2013 at Franklin.
“This was beyond expectations for us,” OA head coach Kahn Lima said. “Especially in a tournament, I did not see this coming. Our goal was to get somewhere in the top four or five. This was the highest total points we’ve scored at this tournament. The depth of the lineup really showed through today because we had 11 of our 14 kids place. The kids wrestled tough and bounced back from that tough dual loss against Foxboro and instead of quitting, they wrestled awesome today.”
Depth was key for the Tigers as they didn’t have a single champion but had two runner ups and nine other placements.
Luke Cullen made it to the 220 final but was edged out 3-2 but Franklin’s John Miller. Pat Mills had a pair of wins in the heavyweight class but was pinned by Sankey in the finals.
Casey Bellevue helped the Tigers cause with a third place finish at 106 and Jacob Murphy finished in the same spot at 170. Freshman Anthony Berksza continued to shine in his rookie year with a fourth place finish at 183 and Shea O’Connor (145), Ryan Lehane (152) and Carter Wood (195) all finished fourth as well. John Quilla (120) and Brendan Mills (182) both finished fifth.
“I think the guys were really angry that it happened,” Lima said of OA’s two point loss to Foxboro last week. “We had split with seven matches each and we lost by bonus points, but that’s wrestling. Instead of pouting about it, they grinded it out today. We had a great practice Thursday and a great practice yesterday and the spirits were real high. Now they’re celebrating, it’s awesome to see. The kids did all the work so they deserve it.”
Sharon had the most efficient success in the finals as the Eagles sent a trio of wrestlers in and got three wins. Yosef Ellis-Rech had a pair of takedowns in the second period, sandwiched by a first period takedown and a third period reversal to earn the title at 113. It was a bit of revenge for Ells-Rech, who lost in the finals at 106 last season. Luke Stillman picked up a 4-0 decision over Milford’s Brett Kimball at 132, getting a takedown in the first and a near fall in the third for the win.
David Ellis-Rech completed the strong showing for the Eagles with a 3-2 win over North’s Mike Gould. After a scoreless first, Ellis-Rech had a pair of escapes in the second but a takedown by Gould had things tied 2-2 going into the final period. At 1:19, Ellis-Rech had an escape to get the winning point. Ellis-Rech was selected as the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the meet.
Franklin finished third overall, sent four wrestlers to the finals and had two overall champions. Jordan Carlucci started things off with a second period pin at 106 for the Panthers and John Miller had a 3-2 win at 220. Mike Racca finished second at 113 and Nick Narducci was runner up at 126. The Panthers were helped along by their depth as well with TJ Remillard (120) and Evan Hernandez (195) getting third place finishes and Ed Cropper (160) finishing fourth at 160.

Foxboro’s Matt Kelley reached the finals for the third straight year and won for the second straight year. After winning 8-0 at 120 last year, he won 8-0 at 126 this year. The Warriors also got a win at 160 via Matt Mullally and a 10-1 decision. Phil Dure (120) and Sean Smalley (195) had second place finishes.
Milford’s Nick Johnson was the lone winner for the Scarlet Hawks, racing out to a 6-0 lead through two periods and holding on for a 8-1 win at 195. Nick Marcolini (106), Brett Kimball (132), Ryan Nesta (170) and Ryan Gray (182) each finished second for Milford.

North Clinches Share of Title With Win Against Franklin

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. – It seems that every season when North Attleboro and Franklin meet on the mats that a league title is on the line. This year’s meeting took on added significance because this will be the last time (at least until divisional breakdowns are reassessed) that the two programs will be fighting for the league championship.

With North switching to the Davenport next year, the matchup will still pit two of the Hockomock’s top programs but there will not be a trophy on the line.

North Attleboro took the bragging rights and clinched at least a share of the Kelley-Rex title on Wednesday night in the Kenneth Pickering Gym. The Rocketeers got off to a fast start, leading at one point 30-0, and closed out a 42-21 win over the Panthers.

“I’ll say the same thing I alway say, beating Franklin is a good thing,” said North coach Wayne Griffin with a smile.

He added, “Being prepared for Franklin is always the toughest match of the year regardless of the quality level of either team. Not that I’m a football guy, but I always think of the Patriots and the Jets. It doesn’t matter how bad the Jets are you know it’s going to be a really tough game.”

The Rocketeers started with back-to-back wins by brothers Mike and Nick Gould. Mike, who was wrestling on senior night, got North in front with a 7-2 victory over Dylan MacLean and Nick, a junior, followed that up with a pin of Seamus Cogavin with 59 seconds left in the first period.

Griffin said, “They’re a special family of kids, all three (Zach is a sophomore wrestler) of them. Our team captain stepped up to the plate and did  the things he was supposed to do.”

North had the early momentum and started to roll. Collin Fiske added three points with a 9-2 win at 152 pounds, then three straight pins gave the Rocketeers a commanding 30-0 lead. Jordan Tillinghast (160) and Jack Donohue (170) both picked up pins in the third period and senior Nick Morrison (182) grabbed a pin with 1:01 left in the second.

Franklin coach Carmine Colace knew that his young squad would be tested on Wednesdsay, but was pleased with the effort of his wrestlers to make North work for its points.

He explained, “We had a 182 (Myles Polito) that fought really hard, he’s a freshman, a first-year kid and he fought really hard. The kid we had at 160 (Tom Smith) has been a backup all season. They battled for two of three periods and I didn’t expect that.”

Although North had a big lead, nothing had been decided, as Franklin had potential points waiting in the lower weight classes.

“Wrestling is a little more complicated than just what you see on the scoreboard,” said Griffin. “It’s all about match-ups and it’s about where you start.”

“We started in the strongest part of our lineup. It would’ve been a different feel to the evening had we started at 106 pounds because that’s where the strongest part of Franklin’s lineup is.”

Evan Herandez got the Panthers on the board at 195 pounds, pinning Brad White with 43 seconds left in the second period. John Miller cut the lead to 30-9 with a 5-0 win over Leo Thibault at 220, but North was handed six more points with no Panther to wrestle at heavyweight.

The meet was not over as it headed to 106 and Jordan Carlucci gave the Panthers a little hope of a comeback when he picked up a quick pin just 35 seconds into his match. Mike Rocca followed up with a 4-0 win at 113, but Jake Direnzo did a solid job of avoiding a big loss or a pin guaranteeing North at least a tie.

At 120, North turned to senior Devin Spratt and he came through with a fairly comfortable 10-3 victory over T.J. Remillard  to secure the win for his team. Earlier this season, Spratt became the 11th Rocketeer to reach the 100-win plateau and is now closing in on 110 for his career, which would move him into the top five all-time.

“It feels good,” said Spratt after the meet. “They’re always a tough match. We’ve lost pretty bad to them before, so it feels pretty good.”

When asked how it felt to get to 100 wins, he replied, “It feels like my hard work is paying off.” He continued, “Right now I think we’re on course to win the D2 state title, if everyone wrestles to their full capabilities.”

Nick Narducci beat Alex Devitto 6-2 at 126 and in the final match of the night at 132, North’s Anthony Biaungo and Franklin’s Amir Zamani saved the best for last.

Zamani led 4-0 after two periods and was ahead 5-2 in the third, but Biaungo got a point for an escape and then as time was winding down he took a chance to go for the takedown. Biaungo managed to get the two points with mere seconds to spare, although the Franklin coaches insisted that the wrestlers were out of bounds. In overtime, Biaungo wasted no time to get a reversal for a 7-5 win.

“Anthony Biaungo, he had that momentum going into his match and it helped in his overtime,” said Griffin. “Those things kind of came our way.”

Colace said, “I knew what we were getting into. We just got out-muscled tonight. They’re really well drilled and it’s the best team I’ve seen out of here in a long, long time…maybe they’ll finally win the big one.”

North Attleboro took down top teams from both Rhode Island and Connecticut to claim the title, the first time they did so since 2008. Other teams in the field included Fairfield Warde (ranked #3 in CT), Bristol Eastern (ranked #8 in CT) and host Cumberland (ranked #2 in RI). For the second straight year, Brennan Sankey  won the heavyweight weight class, going 4-0 with four pins. Devin Spratt (120, 3-0 with two pins) and Collin Fiske (152, 4-0 with two pins) also won their weight classes. 
Norton Quad (Oliver Ames) – Oliver Ames picked up wins over Peabody (72-7) and Sabis (57-17) but fell to host Norton (51-12). John Quilla (120) and Anthony Berksza both went 3-0 on the day. 
Sharon Wrestling – The Eagles went 4-0 with wins over Marlboro (48-36), St. John’s (45-21), Smith Voc (45-6) and Masco (42-22).

Ashland Duals (Foxboro, Mansfield, Oliver Ames), 9:00AM – Oliver Ames picked up four wins, including a win over Hockomock rival Foxboro in the tournament final. OA picked up wins over Ashland Keefe Tech (44-25), Andover (52-20), Pathfinder (66-12) and Foxboro (42-26). OA’s Shea O’Connor (145) and Jack Mills (220) both went 4-0 on the day while Casey Believue (106) was 3-0. Ryan Lehane (152) and Pat Mills (285) both went 3-1 for the Tigers. 
Franklin @ West Springfield – Franklin broke even on the day, beating West Springfield (48-21) and Chicopee (42-21) but suffered losses to New Milford (CT) (51-21) and to Springfield Central (42-26). 
Nashoba Quad (Milford), 9:00AM
North Attleboro Quad (North Attleboro) – North Attleboro continued its perfect start with four wins on Saturday, including the program’s first ever win over perennial power St. John’s Prep. The Rocketeers had wins over Prep (40-18), Bridgewater-Raynham (50-24), Dedham (66-12) and LaSalle Academy (45-23). North’s Devin Spratt won his 100th career match with a decision of SJP’s Malcolm Mitchell. 
Norton Quad (Sharon) – Sharon picked up a win over Somerset Berkley (42-31) but lost to Hingham (18-40) and Norton (28-42). 
Danvers Quad (Taunton) – The Tigers suffered three setbacks on the day with losses to Danvers (36-45), Woburn (32-42) and Whittier Tech (20-45). Justin Bradley (126) went 3-0 on the day while Josh Alves (113), Alex Rodriguez (138), Nuno Camara (182) and Santiago Lopez (220) each picked up two wins. Jasmine Ryan (106), Chris Fernandes (120) and Elijah Simmons (195) each had one win.

Attleboro, 44 vs. King Philip, 52 – Final – King Philip senior Michael Roby had the best time of all schools in the 55M dash at 6.79, finished first in the 300M at 37.33, and was first in the high jump at 5-06.00 to spark the Warriors. Other first place finishes for KP included Ethan Dunne in the 600M (1:33.08) and the 55M hurdles (8.50) and Brandon Sullivan in the 1000M (2:48.64). Attleboro’s Brett Szlachciuk was first in the 1 Mile (4:46.01) and the 2 Mile (10:40.18), Isaiah Rodriguez won the long jump (19-01.25) while Jacob Hardy (47-00.00), Patrick Collins (44-03.00) and Nathaniel Joyal (43-09.25) swept the shot put with the best three finishes in the entire league.  

Canton, 26 vs. Milford, 70 – Final – Milford’s Cameron Clark was first in the 55M dash (7.22), Leo Moronta won the 300M (39.86) and the long jump (18-06.25), Jack Kalil won the 1000M (3:01.64) and Luis Goncalves won the 55M hurdles (8.68) and the high jump (5-02.00). Canton’s Mark Clancy won the 1 Mile (4:58.02) and the 2 Mile 10:39.63), Patrick Hession won the 600M (1:32.40) and Ben Mendillo won the shot put at 32-06.00. 
Franklin, 28 vs. Mansfield, 72 – Final – The Hornets had first place finishes from Nick Graham in the 55M dash (6.97), Devin Maughn in the 300M (37.88), Kyle Amerantes in the 600M (1:29.37), Jake Affanato in the 1 Mile (4:43.74) and in the 2 Mile (league best 10:21.71), Jake Morrill in the 55M hurdles (8.61) and the long jump (18-04.50) and Conor Cline in the shot put (35-03.25). Franklin’s Ryan Spelman won the 1000M race in 2:46.49 and Luke Gordon won the high jump at 5-10.00. 
Foxboro, 37 vs. Oliver Ames, 62 – Final – Oliver Ames’ Doug MacDonald won the 55M dash in 6.87, Belmund Rodrigues-Pires took first in the 300M (37.86), Jonathan Long placed first in the 600M (1:33.33), Troy Kent won the 1000M in 2:48.87, Jarod Boone won the mile in 4:40.65, Nicholas Barber won the 2 Mile in 11:51.12 and Kalil Matier finished first in the long jump in 18-04.25. Foxboro’s Jordan Vining was first in the 55M hurdles (8.91), Allston George was first in the shot put (38-09.00) and Owen Whitney won the high jump (5-02.00). 
Sharon, 56 vs. Stoughton, 44 – Final – Tyler Kaufman won the 600M race in 1:31.67 for Sharon and the Eagles also got first place finishes from Scott Kaplan in the 1000M (2:53.36), Tianrui Sun in the 1 Mile (4:48.05), sophomore Grant Fawcett in the 2 Mile (10:50.66), Will McManus in the 55M hurdles (8.44) and in the long jump (19-00.25) and Matt McManus in the shot put (39-09.50). Stoughton got first place finishes from Clifton Gerring in the 55M dash (6.88) and Steven Elice in the 300M (38.03) and the high jump (5-10.00). 
North Attleboro, 49 vs. Taunton, 51 – Final – Taunton had three of the best times of all Hockomock teams to help edge North. Damion Theodule won the 55M dash (6.86), Brian Cherenfant had the best time of all Hockomock teams in the 300M (37.25), Jimmy Hoye topped all Hockomock runners in the 600M with a time of 1:29.07 and Dylan Lynch posted a league best time of 4:39.81 in the 1 Mile. North Attleboro’s Matt Reimels had a league best time in the 1000M (2:43.58), freshman Liam Monahan won the 2 Mile in 10:30.62, sophomore Jonathan Shultz won the 55M hurdles in 8.80, Michael Tobey won the shot put (40-01.50), Matt Tarantino had a league best 5-10.00 in the high jump and John Thompson had a league best 19-01.75 in the long jump.

Attleboro, 37 vs. King Philip, 63 – Final – King Philip’s Hannah Silvestri won the 55M dash (7.99), Christa Wagner won the 300M (43.62), Erica Layne won the 600M (1:45.85), Lucy Hamilton won the 1000M (3:12.67), Sarah Butts won the 2 Mile (13:39.46) and Jayla Millender won the shot put (28-8.25). Attleboro’s Emily Vieira won the 1 Mile (6:13.23), Quincy Harding won the 55M hurdles (9.77) and the long jump (15-02.75) and Allison Wall won the high jump (4-04.00).

Franklin, 56 vs. Mansfield, 44 – Final – Franklin’s Jessica Kroushl posted a league best time of 7.63 in the 55M dash, Meghan Doherty had a league best time in the 600M (1:43.91), Brittany Robinson had the best time of all 12 schools in the 1 Mile (5:29.54), Carly Rondeau won the 2 Mile (13:24.72), Beth Neal won the 55M hurdles (9.67) and the high jump (4-08.00) and Sarah Goodermuth won the shot put (30-08.00). Mansfield’s Kelly Crawford had a league best time of 42.34 in the 300M and won the long jump (15-02.00) and Caitlin Whitman had the league’s top time in the 1000M (3:11.86). 
Foxboro, 38 vs. Oliver Ames, 62 – Final – Oliver Ames got first place finishes from Lauren Wright in the 600M (1:46.09), Dana Lowney in the 1000M (3:14.77), Kale Rockey in the 1 Mile (6:10.65), Gabby Eldridge in the 55M hurdles (9.50) and Chi-Chi Akanegbu in the shot put (league best 35-11.50). Foxboro’s first place finishes were Shraeya Srinivasan in the 55M dash (7.95) and the long jump (16-07.00), Berlendah Dure in the 300M (45.44), Meredith Cronin in the 2 Mile (league best 11:44.84) and Kelsey McDonald in the high jump (4-08.00).

North Attleboro, 70 vs. Taunton, 30 – Final – First place finishes for North Attleboro included Rachel LaBonte in the 300M (43.42), Alexandra Tong in the 600M (1:48.01), Grace Guertin in the 1000M (3:18.73), Ann Roberts in the 1 Mile (5:29.62) and the 2 Mile (12:37.73), freshman Julia Mechlinski in the shot put (31-07.00) and Nicole Boulanger in the high jump (league best 5-00.00). Canton, 74 @ Avon, 33 – Final – Canton senior Griffin Jerrier recorded his first double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. Tony Harris added 14 points, freshman Devin Foster had 11 points and Austin Maffie and Eric Olshaker each scored eight points for the Bulldogs.
Oliver Ames, 39 vs. Archbishop Williams, 25 – Final
Sharon, 54 @ Wilmington, 47 – Final – Sharon’s Matt Lowerre dropped in a team-high 16 points and Andrew Filipkowski drained four three pointers and totaled 14 points to help the Eagles. 
Stoughton, 79 vs. Natick, 66 – Final – Brandon Teixeira scored a game-high 25 points and had nine rebounds as the Black Knights opened with a win at the Randolph Holiday Classic. Cam Gomes added 15 points and five rebounds, Ryan Sullivan had 12 points and four rebounds and Cam Andrews had 11 points and four rebounds. Drayton Tisdale had six points, nine rebounds and four assists. 
Taunton, 49 @ Durfee, 65 – Final – Jose Mercado scored 13 points and Tommy MacLean scored 12 points in the loss for the shorthanded Tigers. 
Girls Basketball
Mansfield, 43 vs. Cooperstown, 28 – Final – Caroline Maher was the top scorer for the Hornets, who ended Cooperstown’s 30-game win streak. Jackie Carchedi added 11 points for Mansfield and combined with Jen Kemp to hold Cooperstown’s top scorer, who came in averaging 26 per game, to just seven points.
Oliver Ames, 56 vs. Walpole, 40 – Final – Kaitlyn McCarthy and Francesca Calabraro each scored 13 points for the Tigers. McCarthy added seven rebounds and four assists. Kayla Raymond scored 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Sam Bamford scored eight for OA, which advances to face Needham on Tuesday.

North Attleboro’s Devin Spratt was named the Marshfield Holiday Tournament Outstanding Wrestler after winning at 120 with a pin over St. John Prep’s Malcolm Mitchell. Sharon’s David Ellis-Rech won at 138 with a 4-1 decision over Hingham’s Joey Ryan.
