Sharon junior David Bai has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 30 through Feb. 6. Bai is the 19th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2021-22 school year and the eighth of the winter season.
Bai was instrumental in Sharon going undefeated and winning the Davenport division dual meet title this winter and then capped the regular season on Sunday by helping the Eagles take first in the annual Hockomock Swimming Championships at Milford. Bai won two individual titles and was part of two first-place finishes in relays to help Sharon amass 361 points as a team, nearly 80 points better than Attleboro in second.
“David capped off his tremendous league season with an absolutely amazing performance at the Hock Championships,” said Sharon head coach Sara Barbera. “Along the way, he broke the school backstroke record twice, and now has the 50 free in his sight. On top of it, he is just a good kid, a gentle giant, no matter how hard you work him. He even sang the national anthem to kick off the boys’ Hocks on Sunday!”
The championship meet started with the 200-yard medley relay and Bai led off for the Eagles, followed by Theo Tran, Michael Wang, and Ray Luo, as they finished in 1:46.34, a second faster than the team from Attleboro. In the fourth event, Bai won the 50-yard free in a time of 22.84, a half-second faster than Timothy Luc of Taunton. Bai added a second individual title in the 100-yard backstroke. He finished in 56.57, again a half second faster than the second-place finisher (Attleboro’s Ryan Connors). In the final event of the day, the 400-yard relay, Bai swam the anchor leg for the Eagles, following Arthur Do, Michael Wang, and Andrew Raynus, as they dominated with a time of 3:39.63. That was nearly seven seconds faster than Franklin’s team in second.
The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the HockomockSports.com staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
