Will Peoples drilled a shot off the crossbar and in off a pass from Noah Schulze to level the game but GNBVT regained the lead 3-2. The Black Knights pushed numbers forward and went to three in the back and the Bears found the back of the net one final time.

Alexis Stowell and Meghan Doherty scored in the final 10 minutes to wrap up the win. Franklin advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals and will host #11 North Attleboro on Sunday, 11/8 at 4:00.

#12 Mansfield, 4 @ #5 Bridgewater-Raynham – Final – Jen Kemp scored a pair of goals while Jackie Carchedi had a pair of assists and also scored one goal. Katie Bongarzone also chipped in with a goal as the Hornets got the win at the road. Mansfield advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals and will travel to #4 Needham on Sunday, 11/8 at 2:00. The Mansfield boys will play Needham before at 12:00.

#4 Franklin, 4 vs. #20 King Philip, 0 – Final – Kelsey McPhee opened the scoring off an assist from Annie Walsh in the 11th minute. In the 23rd minute, Cassi Ronan added a goal off an assist from Taylor Reutlinger. Diana Griffin scored an unassisted goal and assisted on a goal by Walsh in the second half. Abby Campbell made 12 saves for KP. Franklin advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals and will host #5 Dennis Yarmouth on Sunday, 11/8 at 1:00.

#11 Oliver Ames, 2 @ #6 Somerset Berkley, 1 – Final (OT) – Nicole Walker set up senior Missy Krim for a breakaway chance in overtime and the senior co-captain buried it to give the Tigers the win. Walker scored the go-ahead goal in the first half off an assist from Hannah Friend before Somerset Berkley leveled it in the second half. Head coach Janice Sundell said Katie Davenport, Christina Boudreau and Sarah Stevens all played well defensively. Oliver Ames advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals and will travel to #3 Sandwich on Sunday, 11/8 at 3:00.

North Beats Mansfield, Stands Alone Atop Division

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Mansfield coach Mike Redding has North Attleboro roots. Although he has been in charge of the Hornets for over 25 years and bleeds green, he took a moment after Friday night’s installment of this fierce rivalry to go to the Rocketeers celebrating at Alumni Field and congratulate them on the league title and urge them to bring home the Div. 3 state title.

It was a classy move by the Mansfield coach at the end of another emotional matchup between longtime rivals and perennial title challengers that North Attleboro won 14-13 to clinch the Kelley-Rex title outright and potentially the No. 1 seed in Div. 3 Southwest.

“This is great high school football,” said Redding. “It was a slugfest, two great teams, two great defenses, yards were hard to come by but both teams did enough to put themselves in position to win.”

The win gives North Attleboro its first league title since 2011 and its first outright Hockomock title since 2008. Once again, as has been the case all season, it was the Rocketeers defense that came up with the plays to win the game.

Leading by just a point with time winding down in the fourth quarter, North punted. Mansfield took over at its own 37 with less than five minutes remaining.

The Hornets got to the Rocketeers 33 and threw incomplete on first down. On second and 10, North dialed up a blitz and Bobby Mylod shot the gap to stuff Brian Lynch for a six-yard loss. On third down, the Rocketeers came again and sacked Anthony DeGirolamo for a seven-yard loss back to the 46. On fourth down, Kyle Gaumond leapt and swiped the ball out of the hands of Hunter Ferreira to end the drive.

North Attleboro ran out the clock and celebrated the victory.

“What we were trying to do is just get pressure on the quarterback,” said North coach Don Johnson. “I thought they had guys that they could throw to in the passing game…We were worried about it the whole game.”

“Defense has been doing it for us all year,” he added with a smile. “I’d just like the offense to score a couple more and make it a little easier for us.”

The Rocketeers offense looked great at the start of the game. Against a Mansfield defense that has been solid all season, North took the opening kickoff and marched 67 yards on 14 plays to take the lead.

Nick Morrison (12 carries, 68 yards) was big on the drive with six rushes, including a crucial fourth down and one gain of seven yards near midfield. Sophomore quarterback Chad Peterson showed off his arm hitting Davon Andrade for 18 yards and then snuck a shovel pass to Mylod on fourth and one from the four for the go-ahead score.

North Attleboro would not get another first down until its second possession of the third quarter.

Johnson said, “I think they frustrated us a little on offense. We had some blown assignments that we haven’t had in a few weeks, but I think that had a lot to do with their scheme over there.”

Mansfield was not able to get much going offensively but got a little spark right before the half. Ben Budwey’s punt return set the Hornets up at the North 37. DeGirolamo (7-11, 165 yards) hit Ferreira for 18 yards and then, following a four-yard loss, hit him again for another 10.

The Hornets had to settle for a 23-yard Diogo DeSousa field goal but were on the board and went into the break down 7-3.

To start the third quarter, DeGirolamo was strip sacked by Thomas Reynolds and Thomas Kummer jumped on the loose ball at the Hornets 37. But the Mansfield defense forced a turnover on downs, helped in part by Joe Bukuras’ tackle in the flat on Nick Dean for a four-yard loss on third and one.

The Hornets offense took advantage of the momentum swing and drove 71 yards on eight plays to take Mansfield’s first lead. DeGirolamo and Ferreira (six catches, 164 yards) hooked up for a 32-yard completion into North territory and then combined again on a 12-yard touchdown pass to the front pylon that put Mansfield ahead 10-7.

“He made some great passes,” said Redding of DeGirolamo. “Hunter is a great athlete and we tried to get him the ball tonight.”

“The offense is coming together. We just need to find a way to get to 21-24 and with our defense we’re going to win games.”

The lead was short-lived, as North Attleboro showed its resiliency to bounce right back. Peterson hit Ridge Olsen on the far side of the field for 14 yards and Nick Rajotte got 11, before Morrison broke free down the North sideline sprinting past his cheering teammates and the Hornets defense for a 39-yard score.

“We had the momentum,” said Redding, “and if we get one stop there and get the ball back with the lead, I think we win it. But, they’re a championship team, they answered, and they scored.”

Mansfield was not done. After a Connor Flynn sack pushed the Hornets back to third and 21 from their own 27, DeGirolamo and Ferreira connected on a 64-yard pass (taking advantage of a slip by the defensive back) down to the North nine. Again, the Hornets had to settle for a field goal and trailed 14-13 with 7:58 left.

Redding explained, “We thought we outplayed them in the second half and probably needed to score on the drive before, but we didn’t want to come up empty and thought that if we got a field goal and got the ball back that we felt good about driving.”

“Tonight we were just one drive away.”

Mylod, Gaumond, and the North defense did enough to stymie the Hornets on their final drive. When a personal foul flag was thrown for a late hit out of bounds on Mansfield with 1:30 left, the game was won and so was the title.

“I felt this team got over the hump and gained that confidence,” said Johnson. “This week in practice I had that feeling that everyone knew what they were doing for the first time. They entered the game with a lot of confidence.”

Even in defeat, Redding felt that this game had plenty of positives for the Hornets with the Div. 2 playoffs looming. He said, “We get a second life next week; this isn’t the end of the season. If we play like we did tonight, then we can make a run.”

He shook hands with the media and walked over to the North Attleboro players. As Mansfield made its way to the locker room, turning its back on the loss and focusing on next week, the Rocketeers stayed on the field taking a couple of moments to savor the win for a few more moments before moving forward.

Mansfield, 3 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – Hana Caster scored off a corner kick from Grace Guertin with just four minutes left to life the Rocketeers. North held a 3-0 lead at the break as Guertin factored into all four goals for Big Red. Guertin was fouled in the area in the 12th minute and Shannon Kingsley buried the penalty kick. Guertin then set up Leah Jette in the 21st minute and then linked up with Kingsley in the 31st minute to build a 3-0 lead at half. Hannah Reiter scored a pair of goals in the second half for Mansfield and Katie Bongarzone scored once to tie the game at three.

Oliver Ames, 4 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Kiana Lozzi scored a pair of goals, Delaney Benton and Francesca Calabraro each netted one goal and Jackie Mills had two assists for Oliver Ames.

King Philip, 3 vs. Walpole, 2 – Final – King Philip dropped the first two sets but rallied back to get the win at home, 20-25, 12-25, 25-12, 25-21, 15-12. Seniors Josie Rowean and Gwen Uyrus shined on senior night with 21 and 12 kills respectively while senior Molly Citarell and Micaela Murray anchored the defense for the Warriors.
Stoughton, 3 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – The Black Knights and Eagles played in their annual Dig for a Cure match and raised over $3,200 for cancer research according to SMAC’s Jeffrey Pickette. Stoughton picked up a 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 sweep on the road. Bridgette Whalen led the Black Knights with nine blocks, six kills, 15 digs and four aces, Bianca DeSousa had 11 digs, nine service points, five kills and four aces and Ava Siegel added 13 service points, five kills and two aces.

Taunton, 2 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Caroline Lounsbury scored the game winning goal with 44 seconds left off assists from Taylor Reutlinger and Kenzi Pleshaw to lift the Panthers. Taunton held a 1-0 lead at halftime but Diana Griffin knotted the game just three minutes into the second half off assists from Cassi Ronan and Reutlinger. Annie Walsh put Franklin ahead at 2-1. Abbey Kingman scored both of Taunton’s goals.

Stoughton, 3 vs. Brockton, 1 – Final – Courtney Campbell, Mia Russell and Ashley Chipman scored for Stoughton, who qualified for the state tournament with the win.

King Philip, 1 @ Mansfield, 9 – Final – Mansfield’s offensive exploded for nine goals, led by a hat trick from junior Hannah Reiter. Alle Bezeau scored a pair of goals, Emma Oldow had two goals and an assist, Jen Kemp scored once and had an assist, Bryn Anderson netted a goal and Emma Goulet and Jackie Carchedi each notched a pair of assists.
Milford, 2 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Kristen Franzini netted both of Milford’s goals while Emily Duquette had a strong game in goal with nine saves for the Scarlet Hawks.

North Attleboro, 1 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Taunton scored first in the opening half but Haley Guertin, off an assist from sister Grace Guertin, leveled the score just over 10 minutes into the second half.

Oliver Ames, 7 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Francesca Calabraro had a hat trick and added an assist for the Tigers. Jackie Mills added two goals and an assist and Lauren Wright and Annabella Walsh each scored goals. Delaney Benton chipped in with three assists.
Volleyball
Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Franklin’s Caroline Maguire had seven aces and added four kills and a pair of blocks to lead the Panthers. Maddy Kuzio had four aces and a pair of digs and Lauren McGrath had 10 assists and three aces for Franklin.

Canton, 3 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final – Canton got the sweep on the road 25-15, 25-14, 28-26 and clinched its sixth straight Davenport Division title and ninth straight Hockomock League title overall, dating back to before the division split. Olivia Devoe had yet another strong game on defense with 15 digs while Elizabeth Hamilton dominated offensively with 20 kills and three aces, also chipping in with 19 digs. Canton head coach Pat Cawley praised the efforts of Kaitlin McCarthy, Emma Gobbi and Emma Murphy for their strong play at the net. Cawley also noted great defensive efforts from Julia Panico, Cassie Loftus and Maria Mackie.
Mansfield, 3 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – Mansfield picked up the sweep on the road, 25-15, 25-22, 25-23. Jess Haradon had 18 digs and 11 service points for the Hornets while Cathryn Heavey had 35 assists and 10 service points. Sarah Mullahy had seven kills, seven blocks, and nine service points while Alli Belanger added eight digs and nine service points. For King Philip, Josie Rowean had 13 kills, Amelia Murphy added five kills, Emma Lopez had three kills and Micaela Murray finished with 10 digs.

Dominant Defensive Effort Boosts Rocketeers Again

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – There’s really no other way to put it — North Attleboro’s defense is very good.
Just ask Stoughton, Bishop Feehan King Philip, Franklin and now, Attleboro.
The Rocketeers walked into Tozier-Cassidy Field at Attleboro High undefeated and walked out with a 14-0 shutout win over the rival Bombardiers.
Through five games this season, the Rocketeers have yet to allow more than one touchdown in any given game and only Feehan was able to put up two scores. The defense has allowed a measly 5.6 points per game now.
Unsurprisingly, it was the Rocketeers defense that got things started on both sides of the ball.
After the teams traded punts, Attleboro took over in North Attleboro territory. Facing a 1st and 16 from the 43 yard line, junior quarterback Tyler McGovern dropped back and fired a pass but North Attleboro senior Patrick Johnson read the play the entire way. Johnson stepped in front of the pass and intercepted it in stride and raced 65 yards untouched for a touchdown. Connor Flynn’s extra point was good giving North Attleboro a 7-0 lead with 6:32 left in the first quarter.
It was the fourth pick six for the Rocketeers through five games this year and Johnson was the third different player to do so.
“I think our guys up front have to get some credit,” North Attleboro head coach Don Johnson said of the secondary’s success thus far. “I think we’ve done a good job of pressuring quarterbacks all year and forcing some quick throws. We’ve got a pretty smart group out there in our secondary so that helps.”
North Attleboro’s defense didn’t rest there and came right back out with a big stand. Attleboro gained three yards on first down on the ensuing drive but couldn’t move the ball on the next two and were forced to punt for the second time of the game.

The Rocketeers offense then went to work with its most efficient drive of the game. On first down, junior Bobby Mylod (seven carries, 54 yards) raced up the left side for 24 yards and a first down. Sophomore quarterback Chad Peterson (8/12, 66 yards) kept it on the next play for four more and on second down, Nick Rajotte (three carries, 38 yards) came across to the right side and scampered for a 30 yard touchdown. Flynn’s extra point was good, giving the Rocketeers a 14-0 lead with 4:17 left in the first quarter.
Although it looked like the floodgates might open for the Rocketeers, neither North Attleboro or Attleboro was able to tack anymore points onto the scoreboard.
Attleboro senior Kyle Murphy put a stop to North’s next drive, dropping Mylod for a four yard loss on third and short but the Bombardiers went four and out. The Rocketeers moved the ball but couldn’t covert a 3rd and six and gave the ball back to Attleboro.
McGovern hit sophomore Cam Furtado for 15 yards on first down to get the drive going but a rush for no gain and then a false start put Attleboro in a hole. On 3rd and 15, North Attleboro’s Brodey Barr broke up a pass to set up a punt. Instead of a long punt, North Attleboro’s Davon Andrade broke through and blocked the punt. Junior Tom Reynolds was able to haul in the ball in the air and North took over at the Attleboro 32 yard line.
North converted a 4th and 2 when Peterson connected with Barr over the middle for 20 yards, setting up 1st and goal from the 5 yard line but there was only five seconds left in the half. The Rocketeers elected to run a play but a low pass fell incomplete and the final seconds of the first half ticked off.
“We’re struggling a little bit to finish drives so we’re making things a little more difficult on ourselves,” Johnson said. “We’re getting better. I think we moved the ball on the ground as well as we have all year tonight, I think it was the most yardage all year. We just have to be better at finishing. We took a chance at the end of the half, we thought we had enough time for the play and the field goal. Maybe if there wasn’t some indecision on if it was a catch maybe there’s a second. We’re getting there. Thankfully the defense is playing well and keeping us in these close games.”

Attleboro came up with a big stop to open the second half as North Attleboro attempted to go for it on 4th and 1 but Matt Mahoney jumped in and stopped the play in the backfield. The Bombardiers came out and went with Furtado as the quarterback of the second half and moved the ball the most efficiently all night.
Furtado used quarterback runs on the first three downs to get a first down and then floated one that senior Alex Silva went up and grabbed for a 25 yard gain inside the red zone. But the momentum would stop there.
Furtado rushed for three yards but Reynolds and Nicholas Thorpe stopped Furtado for no gain on second down. An incomplete pass set up 4th and 7 from the 16 and Furtado tossed one to the end zone but it was over the head of Brendan Nunes and the Bombardiers turned it over on downs.
The Rocketeers were able to kill a lot of clock on the next drive, moving the ball 65 yards on 13 plays. Peterson’s (four rushes, 25 yards) eight yard gain was followed by backup quarterback Kyle McCarthy (six rushes, 21 yards) coming in for a rush of nine yards. Peterson hit Ridge Olsen on back to back plays for 11 yards each time and, after a six yard rush from Nick Morrison (16 carries, 86 yards), Peterson hit Olsen for six more yards and a first down. Rushes from Rajotte and McCarthy combined for 17 yards but after an incompletion and a short gain, North faced 3rd and 7.
Thats when Owen McKenna came crashing in, sacking Peterson for a 5 yard loss. Flynn attempted a 36 yard field goal but it came up short.
Attleboro had to punt once again after going four and out but the defense held and got the ball back four plays later. On 3rd and 10, Attleboro moved forward via a hands to the face call. Nick Morrison came in for a sack on the next play but two plays later, McGovern hit Silva down the right side for 36 yards to the 10 yard line.
But once again, it was North Attleboro’s defense that came up big. Two incompletions were followed by a sack from Andrade, and on fourth and goal from the 27 yard line, the pass fell incomplete. North Attleboro was able to run the clock out the rest of the way.
Attleboro’s quarterbacks combined for just five completions on 21 attempts, which is a combination of a strong secondary and the players up front for North Attleboro.
“It allows us to man up and then we can bring more people if you’re matched up man to man,” Johnson said of having a strong secondary. “Sometimes you don’t have that luxury because you have some mismatches out there. Brodey gives us some length out there too.”
North Attleboro finished with nearly triple the yards in the game (282-100) and just under triple the first downs (15-6).
“We just couldn’t get into a rhythm,” Attleboro head coach Mike Strachan said. “We fought though, this was a tough game up front, it was really a battle up front all day long. We just couldn’t get anything going. Offensively we have to look at the film and see what we can improve on. Next week becomes a huge game for us, really the playoffs start for us next week.
“We have to learn from these games.”
North Attleboro is now 5-0 overall and have the lead in the Kelley-Rex division at 3-0. The Rocketeers will look to continue its strong start next week when they host Taunton. Attleboro (2-3, 1-2) will look to bounce back when they take a trip to King Philip (2-1, 2-3) next Friday night.

Matt Lowerre capped Sharon’s scoring shortly into the second half off an assist from Dunlea. Gareth King netted a late goal for the Rocketeers.
