Wednesday’s Schedule & Scoreboard – 05/17/16

Baseball
Franklin, 4 @ Attleboro, 3 – Final – Franklin senior Steve Ferguson scored what turned out to be the winning run on a squeeze play in the top of the seventh and the Panthers held off a late surge from Attleboro to earn the win. Franklin scored two runs in the top frame to go up 4-1. Jake Noviello went 6.1 innings for Franklin, striking out nine with four hits allowed to earn the win. Bryan Woelfel picked up the last two outs to earn the save for Franklin. Offensively, Jake Lyons had two hits, including a double, and scored a run, Ryan Hodgkins belted an RBI triple and scored a run and Cam Lupien knocked in a run. Attleboro’s Matt Callahan had two hits, scored a run and drove in two, Dylan Maskell had two hits and an RBI and Tyler Davis reached base four times, stole two bases and scored once. Tyler McGovern was the tough luck loser on the mound, tossing a complete game. “He pitched well, made it tough for us,” said FHS head coach Zach Brown.

Foxboro, 9 @ Canton, 7 – Final – Colin Thoener did it all for the Warriors, tossing a complete game and knocking in a team-high four RBI in a close win over Canton. Thoener scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out five to earn the win while going 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. AJ Bubencik also had a strong day offensively, going 3-for-4 with three runs and a stolen base and sophomore Anthony Mollica had two hits, three RBI and two stolen bases.

Mansfield, 8 @ King Philip, 5 – Final (8 inn.) – Kevin Dow (2-for-4) knocked in Cullin Anastasia (2-for-3, RBI) for the winning run in the top of the eighth and Aidan Cahill brought in two more insurance runs — Max Boen (2-for-2, RBI) and Matt Farragher — as Mansfield escaped with an 8-5 win in extras at King Philip. Mansfield took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but KP responded with two in the bottom half. The Hornets tacked on single runs in the second and third to make it 5-2, but KP cut into the deficit with a run in the third and tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Mansfield’s Kyle Moran earned the winning, tossing 3.1 innings in relief with just two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Stephen Murray knocked in two runs for KP while Will Weir (2-for-4, two runs) and Ben Furfari (2-for-4) each knocked in one.

Milford, 2 @ North Attleboro, 9 – Final – North Attleboro junior Peter Cohen shined in his first ever varsity start, allowing just one run on four hits and no walks, striking out five to lead the Rocketeers to a big division win. Offensively, the Rocketeers had nine hits, scoring two runs in the first, five in the second and tacking on single runs in each the third and fifth innings. Zach DeMattio (three RBI) belted a two-run home run in the first and John Brennan had a solo home run in the third.

Oliver Ames, 5 @ Taunton, 8 – Final – Taunton junior Christin Simoes had two hits, including a home run, and knocked in a pair of runs as Taunton prevailed against OA. OA took a 1-0 lead in the first, only for Taunton to respond with two runs in the bottom half. Taunton added three more in the third to take a 5-1 lead. OA didn’t go quietly, tying the game with four runs in the fourth but Taunton added three more in the sixth to get the win. Jacob Crawford added two hits and Matt Machado had one hit and an RBI for Taunton. Tyler Medeiros earned the win on the mound, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts and four earned runs allowed. Oliver Ames’ Cam Johnson went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI and Sam Burr added two hits as well.

Sharon, 3 @ Stoughton, 4 – Final – Stoughton overcame a one run deficit with the tying run in the third and then the go-ahead run in the fifth to edge out the Eagles and clinch their second straight Davenport title. Senior Josh Roos delivered the big hit for the Black Knights, connecting for a one-out triple in the fifth and came on a sac fly from Ruben Gonzalez for what turned out to be the winning run. Gonzalez also scored the tying run in the third, scoring on a passed ball after singling and stealing second. Stoughton took the lead with two runs in the first on Luke Johnson’s two-out two-run triple. Johnson also earned the win on the mound, going six innings with three runs allowed on eight hits, three strikeouts and one walk. Evan Gibb pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save.

Softball
Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Franklin got all three of its runs within the first two innings and junior Jackie Cherry did the rest in the circle, tossing a complete game shutout. Franklin freshman Anna Balkus singled, stole second and used two wild pitched to come home. Ally Shea also scored in the first inning for the Panthers. In the second inning, Cherry helped her own cause, reaching in the second and having courtesy running Emma DiPhilippo scoring the Panthers’ third run. In the circle, Cherry allowed just two hits, issued two walks and struck out five.

Canton, 5 @ Foxboro, 10 – Final

King Philip, 4 @ Mansfield, 0- Final – King Philip Elise Pereira allowed just one hit while fanning 10 batters in a complete game shutout. Jenn Hutnyan paced KP’s offense with three hits, an RBI and a run scored while Hailey McCasland added two this and Faith Turnese contributed with a key pinch hit double. Mansfield’s Sarah Cahill had three strikeouts while giving up eight hits while Megan Letendre had the lone hit of the day for the Hornets.

North Attleboro, 3 @ Milford, 6 – Final – North Attleboro cut into MIlford’s 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third but the Scarlet Hawks had an answer, tacking on two runs in the bottom of the fourth to pick up the win. The teams traded single runs in the sixth inning. Junior Emily Piergustavo paced Milford’s offense, going 4-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Kate Irwin (1-for-3) added three runs, Jess Tomaso had two hits and an RBI and Maggie Farrell reached twice and knocked in one run. MHS head coach Steve DiVitto said Maddy Bonvino “played an exceptional defensive game at second base.” Kelley Reichert picked up the win, going six innings, scattering five hits and striking out one. Ali Atherton earned the save, striking out two in one inning of work. For North Attleboro, Meg Barlow had two hits and a a run scored and Ashley Cangiano drove in pinch runner Kat Munley.

Taunton @ Oliver Ames – Postponed to Thursday, 5/18 at 3:45.

Stoughton, 12 @ Sharon, 0 – Final (6 inn.) – Brianna Ferrandiz went 3-for-3 with three RBI to pace the Black Knights on offense, while Gina Carafa allowed only two hits and struck out nine in a six-inning shutout. Jordan Lyons added two hits and three RBI and Nikki Coppola drilled a three-run homer for Stoughton.

Boys Lacrosse
Attleboro, 2 @ Sharon, 10 – Final

Canton, 18 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Canton senior CJ Martin netted first career goal and then went on to add two more to record a hat trick in the Bulldogs’ big win. Brian Albert and Alec Raguso also scored their first career goals while Connor Proctor and Matt Mackay found the back of the net for the first time this season.

Foxboro, 5 @ Franklin, 9 – Final – Franklin raced out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and used that strong start to take down Foxboro. The Panthers gained a 7-3 edge by halftime but were blanked in the third quarter by Foxboro’s defense and the Warriors cut the deficit to three at 7-4 entering the fourth. But Franklin recovered and won the fourth quarter 2-1 to prevail with a win. Eric Civetti had three goals and three assists, Packie Watson also netted a hat trick and had one assist and Nitin Chaudhury had one goal and one assist. Chase Tanner and Jake Davis each added one goal while sophomore Jacob Alexander notched 15 wins at the face off X.

King Philip, 21 @ Milford, 1 – Final

North Attleboro, 12 @ Mansfield, 6 – Final – North Attleboro built a commanding 7-2 lead by halftime and never looked back to notch a key road win and clinch the Davenport division outright. Jason McNeany won 10 of the 15 face offs he participated in to help give Big Red the possession edge. Jack Dakin scored a team-high five goals and added two assists, Zach McGowan (two goals, two assists) totaled four points and McNeany finished with a pair of goals and one assist. Owen Costello also recorded four points for the Rocketeers while Colin Young scored once and had one assist, Tommy Lindstrom added two assists and Hunter Sarro notched one helper.

Oliver Ames, 17 @ Stoughton, 7 – Final

Girls Lacrosse
Taunton, 12 @ Canton, 14 – Final – Emily Fabbiano scored six goals to lead Canton to a come-from-behind victory, while Mary Kent added a hat trick and Kathryn Doody made 11 saves for the Bulldogs. The Tigers were led by Abbey Kingman’s five goals and four from Alana Tavares, while Lorna Li made 17 saves.

Franklin, 9 @ Foxboro, 8 – Final

Milford, 5 @ King Philip, 21 – Final

Mansfield, 11 @ North Attleboro, 18 – Final – North clinched its tournament berth with the win and had 14 assists on its 18 goals. Chloe Olsen had four assists, while Julia Dakin, Katie Lindstrom, Kenzie Rosenberg and Erin Holley each had two assists apiece.

Boys Tennis
Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – Franklin bounced back from just its third loss with a sweep of Attleboro, dropping just four games total. Eli Brooks moved up a spot and earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles, Rohan Herur won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Tyler DiPalma, usually a second doubles player, notched a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles. The team of James Johnston and Derek Wu continued their strong season with a 6-0, 6-0 win at first doubles while Dan Angermeier and Tony Calderone won 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles.

Canton, 0 @ Foxboro, 5 – Final

King Philip, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – King Philip prevailed from a competitive divisional match with Mansfield with a close win, taking two wins in singles and one more in doubles. Cole Ginter prevailed 6-1, 7-5 at first singles and Martin Matous recorded a 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. KP’s team of Ryan Gemelli and Marco DiStefano earned a key 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win at first doubles to seal the win. Mansfield’s Luke Nickerson won 6-0, 6-1 at second singles and the team of Gus Daganhardt and Stephen Zenack won 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 at second doubles.

North Attleboro, 5 @ Milford, 0 – Final – It was a clean sweep for the Rocketeers, winning all five matches in straight sets to earn a road victory. Zac Pfeffer won 6-1, 6-3 at first singles, Alex Rinaldi moved up a spot and earned a 6-2, 6-1 at second singles and Alex Pfeffer prevailed from third singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win. The team of Daniel Zhang and Ben Pfeffer won 6-1, 6-4 at first doubles and Andrew Harris and Vikram Senthilakumaran notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at second doubles.

Taunton, 5 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final – Taunton’s first doubles of sophomores Dylan Kullas and Charlie Fiske emerged victorious from a 10-set super tie breaker to complete the Tigers’ clean sweep. Kullas and Fiske won 6-7, 7-5, 11-9 while the team of junior Kyle Dennehy and freshman Alex Pugh won 6-2, 6-4 at second doubles. Taunton swept singles as well with sophomore Brett Beaulieu (6-1, 6-1), junior Mike Briggs (6-2, 6-2) and senior Eric Gwozdz (6-2, 7-5) all winning in straight sets.

Girls Tennis
Franklin, 5 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – The Panthers earned their second 5-0 sweep of the season, both coming in victories over Attleboro. Hannah Sweeney (first singles) and Anja Deric (second singles) won in straight sets without losing a game while junior Stephanie Schiavo won 6-3, 6-1 at third singles. Franklin’s first doubles team of Madison Derby and Julia Hogan won 6-4, 6-3 and juniors Jillian McLaughlin and Alexa Katsaros notched a 7-5, 6-0 win at second doubles.

Foxboro, 5 @ Canton, 0 – Final – Foxboro lost a total of four games in singles play, winning all three matches in straight sets in a win over Canton. Sophia Prinos won 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, Lexi Nelson recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles and Julia Muise walked away with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at third singles. The team of Kayla Prag and Olivia Dantona won 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles for Foxboro while Jacey Nicklas and Morgan Krockta prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 at second doubles.

Mansfield, 1 @ King Philip, 4 – Final – King Philip won a pair of matches in both singles and doubles to take down visiting Mansfield. Erin Regnier won 6-2, 7-5 at second singles and Meghan Sepich picked up a 6-2, 7-5, 10-5 win at third singles. The team of Megan Davenport and Carly Adams recorded a 6-4, 6-0 win at first doubles and Corinne Palumbo and Gracie Jarest won 6-1, 6-0 at second doubles. Mansfield’s Paulina Martin won at first singles, falling 2-6 in the first set before winning by default.

Milford, 0 @ North Attleboro, 5 – Final

Oliver Ames, 0 @ Taunton, 5 – Final – Taunton’s Jillian Pagliuca prevailed in a tight match at third singles, winning 7-5, 6-3 to complete the sweep. Olivia Sweeney won 6-1, 6-0 at first singles and Jordan Pagliuca notched a 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Taunton lost just two games total in doubles play with Ashley Eason and Emily Moor (first doubles) and Caroline Hebert and Jordan Martin (second doubles) each winning 6-0, 6-1.

Baseball
Oliver Ames, 8 @ Attleboro, 6 – Final – It was a back and forth battle between the Tigers and Bombardiers, with Oliver Ames prevailing behind three runs in the seventh inning. The Tigers grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the first but Attleboro cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the bottom half. Attleboro took a 4-3 lead in the fourth but OA grabbed a 5-4 advantage in the top of the fifth. The Bombardiers tied the game 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth and took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Oliver Ames took advantage of 10 walks on the day. Junior Matt Muir (2-for-5) drove in a pair of runs and the Tigers added an insurance run on a wild pitch to go up 8-6 in the top of the seventh. Cam Johnson was 2-for-3 with two RBI for OA while Alden Newman had a standout day behind the plate and went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Chris Pearsons (RBI) picked up the win, coming on in relief in the sixth and didn’t give up a hit. Attleboro junior Jon Candiales (3-for-3) reached base four times and had an RBI double while sophomore Troy Van Vliet recorded a pair of hits for the Bombardiers.

Sharon, 3 @ Canton, 4 – Final – Canton struck for a pair of runs in the third and then again in the fourth, holding off a Sharon rally late to pick up its first win of the season. A trio of sophomores stepped up to lead the Bulldogs. Matt Pigeon had a two-run single to pace the offense. Paul Corcoran earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings while classmate Rob Sullivan earned the two-inning save. Sharon’s Spencer Singer had a three-run double in the sixth to bring the Eagles within one.

Foxboro, 2 @ Milford, 3 – Final – Milford senior Alex Macek had another strong outing on the mound for the Scarlet Hawks, going the distance without giving up an earned run. He scattered eight hits and struck out seven to earn the win. Offensively, he went 1-2 with a run scored. Milford scored all three runs in the third inning, junior Aidan Wilde going 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and Anthony Arcudi hitting 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Scarlet Hawks. Foxboro tacked on single runs in the sixth and in the seventh. Steve McLaughlin struck out five and allowed six hits in a complete game effort for the Warriors. Colin Thoener was 2-for-4 for Foxboro.

Franklin, 6 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Franklin’s offense picked right where it left off from Wednesday’s walk-off win over Walpole. The Panthers pounced for three runs in both the first and second innings to take a 6-0 lead. Mansfield tacked on single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Franklin junior Jason Ulrickson was impressive on the mound, giving up just one earned run on seven hits and just one walk in a complete game effort. Ulrickson also struck out five and had two RBI and a run scored on the offensive end. Jake Lyons (two runs) and Tyler Gomes (RBI) each went 2-for-4 for Franklin while Ryan Hodgkins (1-for-2) had an RBI and two runs, Bryan Woelfel had a two RBI single and Cam Lupien was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Mansfield’s Matt Farragher had an RBI single for the Hornets.

Taunton, 6 @ King Philip, 4 – Final – Taunton overcame a four run deficit, scoring runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to earn a key division win over King Philip. The Warriors plated a pair of runs in the second and the fourth innings. The Tigers cut the deficit in half with two in the fifth and took the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. Taunton added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. With the game tied 4-4, Taunton senior Billy Emerson (1-for-2, two RBI) knocked in the go-ahead run with a single. Taunton sophomore Jack Moynihan (2-for-4, run) earned the win, striking out two with four runs allowed in six innings of work. Senior Danny Keogh got the save with a scoreless seventh inning. Tyler Medeiros and Jacob Crawford each went 2-for-4 with an RBI while David Schofield went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. King Philip’s Kyle Guenthner was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Chris Wing went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Wing also struck out three in 5.2 innings of work, allowing three earned runs.

Stoughton, 7 @ North Attleboro, 2 – Final – Stoughton’s Luke Johnson got the offense going early and Ryan Sullivan had a solid outing on the mound as the Black Knights battled the Rocketeers for the top spot in the Davenport. Johnson (3-for-4) connected for a two-out two RBI single in the top of the first to put Stoughton ahead. Evan Gibb had two hits, Ruben Gonzalez hit a solo home run and Jack Connelly knocked a two-run shot over the fence. Sullivan allowed just one earned run in six innings of work, walking two, allowing four hits and striking out five. Gibb pitched a scoreless, no-hit seventh inning with two strikeouts.

Softball
Attleboro, 10 @ Oliver Ames, 8 – Final – Attleboro scored early and often, needed each run to take down the Tigers at Parkview Elementary. Big Blue pushed across five runs in the top of the first and added two more in the second to take a 7-1 lead. OA responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to cut Attleboro’s lead to 7-5. The Bombardiers never relinquished the lead and took a 10-8 decision. McKenzie Bergdoll went the distance in the circle for Attleboro, striking out seven and went 3-for-4 at the plate. Lead off hitter Jordyn Lako went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Julya Woyton hit 3-for-4 with a three-run triple with the bases loaded in the first inning. AHS coach Mark Homer said Kayla Battisti made several stops at third base, helping to thwart OA’s comeback attempts. Oliver Ames’ Victoria Ziner was perfect at the plate (4-for-4, three singles, double) with three runs scored for the Tigers. Lexie Campbell (1-for-3) and Katie Abreu (3-for-4, double) had two RBI each. Rachel Han and Caroline Mahoney also each knocked in a run for OA.

Canton, 4 @ Sharon, 9 – Final – Senior Sam Marglous provided the offense to help the Eagles pick up a second win of the season. Marglous went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Alli Small, Rebecca Clayman, and Clara Cook each had hits and Sharon coach Deb Parker added that Small also played a strong defensive game at shortstop.

Milford, 16 @ Foxboro, 4 – Final (6 inn.) – Milford and Foxboro traded runs in the third inning to make it 2-2 but Milford’s offense came to life, scoring three runs in the fourth and then exploding for 11 runs in the sixth. Emily Piergustavo (3-for-5, HR, two runs, four RBI) and Jess Tomaso (3-for-5, HR, double, three runs, three RBI) connected on back-to-back home runs to pace the Hawks’ offense. Kaitlyn DeCapua went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Emily Hartman was 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBI, a double and two runs and Shannon Cormier was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Mansfield, 5 @ Franklin, 4 – Final (9 inn.) – Mady Bendanillo scored the game-winning run for Mansfield in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by Mackenzie Burke. Bendanillo slid in just ahead of the tag to give the Hornets the lead. Franklin put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but Sarah Cahill got the final two outs to earn the complete game win. Mansfield took a two-run lead in the top of the seventh. Megan Letendre reached on an error and Bendanillo was hit by a pitch, followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Marissa Staffer and Kerran Holmes. Franklin rallied with two in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Kim Moulton (pinch hit) and Rachel Cousineau (3-for-4) had back to back singles. Olivia Haba tagged up for third and scored on an overthrow. Olivia DiGiacomo singled to score Cousineau.

King Philip, 3 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Taunton took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but King Philip responded with three in the top of the second and that was enough to pull out the win in a pivotal Kelley-Rex division game. Jess Bonner drove in one run and Elise Pereira had an RBI double and scored on a wild pitch, while Jenn Hutnyan allowed only one run on four hits to pick up the win for the Warriors. Courtney Fisher allowed two earned runs on three hits for the Tigers and Taunton coach Dave Lewry praised eighth grader Hannah Aldrich for a strong game defensively at shortstop. Aldrich had eight assists and three put-outs. MacKenzie Handrahan drove in the lone Taunton run.

North Attleboro, 14 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – North Attleboro freshman dazzled on the mound, striking out a career-high 14 batters, allowed just one hit and walked just two batters to help the Rocketeers blank Stoughton. Liz Morehouse paced Big Red’s offense, going 3-for-5 with five RBI. Olivia Capobianco and Andrea Miceli each had a pair of hits while Erti and Ashley Cangiano each scored a pair of runs.

Boys Lacrosse
Canton, 13 vs. Milton, 0 – Final – The Bulldogs picked up their fourth straight win, blanking Milton in a non-league clash at Canton High. Eight different players scored at least one goal, led by sophomore Mike Shaw’s four assists and one goal. CHS head coach Bill Bendell said his side got great defense from their poles: Michael Pigeon, Brendan Albert, Nick Mackay, Gabe Galeotos, Brian Ghostlaw, Jona Sutton, Michael Yong and Brian Albert. Freshman Jack Connolly (three quarters) and senior CJ Martin combined for the shutout in net.

Foxboro, 5 @ Mansfield, 4 – Final – Foxboro and Mansfield were tied after the first quarter (1-1) and tied at halftime (3-3). But Foxboro outscored the Hornets 2-1 in the third quarter and pitched a shutout in the fourth to edge Mansfield in the semifinals of the Chowda Cup. Andrew Whalen netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the third quarter. Bobby Yerardi, Brendan Tully and Sam Blake each scored once for Foxboro, who received 10 saves in net from goalie Jake Addeche. Foxboro head coach Matt Noone said Mike Collins and Lou Blake had strong games defensively for the Warriors. For Mansfield, Joe Cox had one goal and two assists while Cullen Murphy, Brett Kessler and Aidan Sacco each scored once. Sean Peters made 16 saves in net in front of a strong defensive effort led by Grant Milas and Josh London. Foxboro will play Catholic Memorial in the finals of the Chowda Cup on Saturday at Braintree.

Franklin, 10 vs. Walpole, 11 – Final (OT) – Franklin rallied from a 8-5 deficit at halftime to take a 9-8 lead in the second half. After Franklin was whistled for an interference call, the Rebels tied the game with 1:27 to go. Walpole netted the game-winner with 38 seconds left in overtime. Eric Civetti had four goals and four assist, Chase Tanner had four goals and Kyle McEniry had one goal and one assist. Connor O’Rourke made 17 saves in net for the Panthers while sophomore Jacob Alexander won 18 face offs.

King Philip, 7 vs. Medway, 13 – Final

Girls Lacrosse
Attleboro, 2 @ Sharon, 17 – Final

Oliver Ames, 13 @ Pembroke, 14 – Final – Oliver Ames nearly overcame an eight goal deficit but fell just short on the road at Pembroke. The Titans jumped out to a 9-1 lead and held a 10-4 advantage at halftime. The Tigers won the second half 9-4 but came up just shy of tying the game. Mansfield 16, vs. Holliston, 6 – Final – Maire Foley led the way for the Hornets with five goals and Ann Maher added a hat trick. Mansfield also got two goals apiece from Lauren Whitman, Kathryn Garvin, and Mairead Dunn and 10 saves from Hannah Sternburg.

Attleboro, 3 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final – Attleboro’s second doubles team of Hans Estrada and Luis Sandoval won in three sets, giving the Bombardiers the decisive third win to beat Oliver Ames. Estrada and Sandoval picked up a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win while Shawn Gordon won 6-0, 6-2 at first singles and Jared Cooper won 6-4, 6-4 at third singles. Oliver Ames’ Nick Cavanaugh 6-3, 6-0 at second singles and Greg Mueller and Michael Souza won 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 at first doubles.

Canton, 0 @ Sharon, 5 – Final – Sharon dropped just one game in singles player and just two in doubles to get the sweep against Canton. Junior Andre Olivei won 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, sophomore Danujan Thirumavalavan won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and freshman Alberto Olivei won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. Mansfield, 2 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Franklin relied on its depth to pick up a win over Mansfield in a Kelley-Rex showdown. While Mansfield won at first and second singles, the Panthers claimed wins at third singles and both doubles matches. Freshman Rohan Herur won 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2 at third singles, James Johnstone and Derek Wu won 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles and Tyler DiPalma and Rahul Hosdurg clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at second doubles. Mansfield’s Benny Lin won 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at first singles and Luke Nickerson won 6-3, 6-4 at second singles.

King Philip, 5 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – King Philip won all five matches in straight sets, dropping a total of six games on the road at Taunton. The Scarlet Hawks erupted for 14 hits as a team with five players recording at least a pair of hits. Aidan Wilde and Zack Tamagni each had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for Milford. Nate Irwin got the win, striking out four in five inning sof work with one earned allowed on five hits.

Foxboro, 0 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Stoughton took advantage of a lead off walk in the second inning, turning it into the lone run of the game. Sophomore Evan Gibb drew the walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Ruben Gonzalez. Stoughton senior Ryan Sullivan threw a complete game shutout, scattering three hits with just one walk, fanning three batters for the win. Foxboro’s Aaron Wentling had a strong outing on the mound, allowing just five hits while striking out five in six innings of work.

Oliver Ames, 9 @ King Philip, 4 – Final – Oliver Ames overcame an early 2-0 deficit, taking a 3-2 lead in the third inning. The Tigers then tacked on three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to create a big lead. Kyle Gagliardi went 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead OA while Alden Newman was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Head coach Joe Abarr noted Newman also had a terrific game defensively as well. Senior Sam Burr threw 6.1 innings, striking out three without issuing a walk, giving up three earned runs on eight hits.

Sharon, 0 @ North Attleboro, 8 – Final – North Attleboro’s offense got going early, plating a pair of runs in the first while tacking on single runs in the third and fifth innings. Big Red broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. Junior Nate Pearce tossed a complete game shutout on just 74 pitches, allowing three hits while striking out four batters to earn the win. At the plate, Pearce was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and pair of RBI. Nick Crawley went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, finishing with three RBI and Jeff Gale added three hits for the Rocketeers.

Mansfield, 5 @ Attleboro, 4 – Final – Sarah Cahill picked up the win for the Hornets, allowing seven hits and had five strikeouts. Sarah Bradley went 2-for-2 to lead the Hornets offensively and Liz Mackin, Kerran Holmes, Hayley McGowan and Caty Demassi all had hits in the win. Amanda Giambanco made a big play in right to double up a runner on third to end the sixth inning.

Milford, 21 @ Canton, 0 – Final (5 inn.) – Milford’s Ali Atherton and Maggie Farrell each knocked in five runs as Milford rolled to a big win. Atherton went 3-for-3 with a pair of triples and five RBI while Farrell was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, a triple and five RBI. Emily Piergustavo went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, two walks and five runs scored while Kate Irwin also went 3-for-3 with a double and four runs scored.

Stoughton, 2 @ Foxboro, 3 – Final – Hannah Davis provided a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Foxboro the win in its delayed season opener. Jamie Gorham led off the inning with a base hit and was moved into scoring position by a Kelly McCarthy bunt. Davis ripped a hit to left to score the winning run. Kelly Fisher had two hits and two RBI for the Warriors and Emma Rohan went the distance for the win. Gina Carafa gave up only one earned run in 6-2/3 innings for the Black Knights.

Taunton, 10 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – Courtney Fisher allowed one earned run to pick up her fifth win of the season. Kya Enos had a home run and a double and drove in three runs for the Tigers, while Hailey Medeiros had a double, triple, and two RBI and Katie Van Zandt had a pair of hits. Eighth grader McKenzie McAloon added her first career varsity hit and RBI in the win.

King Philip, 6 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final – Oliver Ames scored in the first inning and loaded the bases in the second, but couldn’t add any more damage as KP picked up the win. OA’s Victoria Ziner was 2-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored and Rachel Han had an RBI for the Tigers. Kayla Georgeu struck out two in a complete game effort for OA.

North Attleboro, 12 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – North Attleboro junior Amelia Murphy had a big day for the Rocketeers, tossing a one-hitter with nine strikeouts to earn the win while also hitting a home run at the plate. Andrea Miceli added three hits, Meg Barlow and Liz Morehouse each had two hits and Kristina Murphy had a three-run triple for the Rocketeers.

Boys Lacrosse
Attleboro, 1 @ Franklin, 19 – Final – Eleven different players found the back of the net as Franklin rolled to its second league win. Four players scored their first career goals for the Panthers; sophomore Cam Sweeney had two goals and one assist, junior Scott Ehrenberg (5/8 on face offs) scored once and sophomores Ben Kolb and Aaron Mollo each netted one goal. Sophomore Jacob Alexander won 14 of 16 face offs. Junior Connor O’Rourke made five saves in net and sophomore Will Davis made three saves in the cage for Franklin.

Canton, 13 @ Milford, 2 – Final – Canton built a commanding 12-0 lead by halftime to pick up a win over the Hawks. Ryan Lodge led all scorers with four goals and three assists for the Bulldogs. Junior Joey Vaughan and freshman James Murphy each scored their first career goals in the win. Canton’s Jack Connolly, CJ Martin, and Dylan Cunningham split time in goal and each played well according to head coach Bill Bendell.

Stoughton, 2 @ Foxboro, 14 – Final – Foxboro’s Louis Piccolo scored four goals to pace the Warriors’ offense. Sam Blake added two goals while Brendan Tully had three assists.

King Philip, 7 @ Mansfield, 6 – Final – King Philip scored the final two goals of the game, turning a deficit into a win over the Hornets. John DeLuca scored with four minutes to play to tie the game 6-6 and then with under two minutes to play, senior Tim Watson scored his goal of the game, which turned out to be the game-winner. Head coach Jamie Stefanini praised the team’s defensive effort, highlighting Connor Khung’s shutdown performance. Paul Macrina made 14 saves in the cage for the Warriors. Colin DeVellis added two goals for KP while Mike Curtain and Ben Palmer each scored once.

North Attleboro, 11 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final – North Attleboro put on a dominant performance in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 7-1 to pull away and earn a league win on the road. Zach McGowan (three assists), Tommy Lindstrom (assist) and Colin Young each scored a pair of goals to pace the Rocketeers’ offense. Dan MacDonald and Jack Dakin each had a goal and an assist while Owen Costello and Andy DeMattio each scored once. Hunter Sarro and Nick Moore each recorded an assist. Taunton, 1 @ Barnstable, 3 – Final – Taunton suffered its first loss of the season, losing 25-21, 26-24, 17-25, 25-20 to Barnstable. Lens Esquil had 14 kills, two blocks and an ace while Lance Law had 14 kills, two aces and a block for the Tigers.

2017 Hockomock Boys Lacrosse Preview

Attleboro

2016 Record: 4-13
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Kevin Koppy

Now in its fourth year at the varsity level, Attleboro boys lacrosse is looking to take the next step in the 2017 season. First year head coach Kevin Koppy made it clear what the goal is for Big Blue: the postseason.

Koppy has plenty of experience at the youth level so he’s very familiar with a lot of the players on the team.

“With the experience and leadership of this team, I fully expect us to make the playoffs this year which would be a first for this relatively young program,” Koppy said. “If the kids work hard and play as a team we have enough talent to make this happen.”

Offensively, seniors Seth Lombardy and Zach Viau, along with junior Alex Banner, will see a lot of time. They’ll be bolstered by the midfield help of seniors Andrew Milliken, Sam Carrado and Jay Mota and sophomore Zach Thomas in the midfield. Juniors Kyle Henry and Aidan McKenna will man the face off X while Jim Nordberg and Chris Reynolds will be long stick midfielders.

Defensively, four year starter and captain Tyler Koppy will anchor the backline alongside juniors Dan Perry and Matt Potter. Sophomore Trevor Koppy returns as the starting goalie again this season.

Canton

2016 Record: 11-8
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South Quarterfinals

The Bulldogs will rely on its athleticism, and be bolstered by depth this season, having more players in the program this season than in the last couple of years.

Canton looks to have one of its most athletic squads from top-to-bottom in recent years and will certainly be in the mix for the Davenport title after winning it twice in the past four seasons.

Offensively, the Bulldogs lost one of the top scorers in the league and in program history in Ben O’Neill, but the good news is that four of the team’s six top point producers from a year ago are back: Ryan Lodge, Joe Mulkay, Dan Dillon and Mike Shaw, all of which reached double figures in points.

Michael Pigeon has been one of the top LSMs in the league the last two years and will be a key piece for Canton defensively this season. Canton will rely on experience to fill the positions around him. The starting goalie spot is up for grabs between Dylan Cunningham, CJ Martin and Jack Connolly.

“The Davenport division is wide open again this year so we know every game is going to matter…we can’t wait to get going,” said head coach Bill Bendell.

Foxboro

2016 Record: 11-7
2016 Finish: Reached D2 Central/East Quarterfinals

The Davenport division looks like it will be wide open this year, but Foxboro could have a slight advantage because of the experience they return this season.

On offense, junior Andrew Whalen is a three year starter and junior Louis Piccolo led the team in scoring a team ago. Junior Mike Moses and sophomore Pete Conley will also factor into the attack or could see time in the midfield. Seniors Trey Guerini and Colin Spinney not only bring a wealth of experience to the midfield, but they have a lot of talent. Sophomore Brendan Tully will relocate to the midfield this season while junior Sam Blake, Lou Blake and Mike Collins will all factor in the midfield as well.

Defensively, it all starts with goalie Jake Addeche, one of the top netminders in the league and the area. Pat Kaveny is a two year starter, as is senior Padraig Farmer and will provide plenty of experience to the back line. Sophomore Pat Stapleton and freshman Ronnie MacLellan will also factor in defensively for the Warriors.

Franklin

2016 Record: 14-6
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South Quarterfinals

The Panthers are going to be young compared to past years, and compared to other teams in the league, but what they lack in age, they more than make up in skill.

There aren’t much better in the offensive end than junior Eric Civetti, and he’s only been in the league for two years. Already committed to Rutgers, Civetti will be one of the most dangerous scorers in the league. Senior captain Sam Arsenault will also be a top option in the offensive end while midfielders Packie Watson, a senior and Nitin Chaudhury, a sophomore, will also be viable options.

Defensively, the Panthers have a second Rutgers commit in sophomore Patrick Morrison. Senior Wyatt Arsenault will give the backline some experience while senior Jack Platner will be the team’s LSM. Junior Connor O’Rourke is back in the cage after a breakout sophomore year.

“We are young as compared to past years, but I feel we’ll be very competitive,” said head coach Lou Verrochi. “We’re very fortunate to have a strong youth program and many boys playing club lacrosse which provides us with talented players every year.”

King Philip

2016 Record: 11-9
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South Quarterfinals

The Warriors had another strong season in 2016 and will be looking to do the same in 2017.

King Philip was strong in league play, posting a 7-3 record and will try to carry that success over to its non league schedule, which include games against Bishop Feehan, Newton North, Hopkinton, Westwood and more.

Paul Macrina has been one of the top goalies in the league over the past couple of seasons and is now ready for his senior year.

Replacing leading scorer Sam Agricola will certainly be a tough test, as well as replacing the production of Harry Fallon. But Tim Watson (27 goals, 21 assists) brings a lot of experience back to the offensive end for the Warriors.

Mansfield

2016 Record: 15-4
2016 Finish: Reached D1 South First Round

Coming off one of the program’s best seasons in recent history, the Hornets will be looking to replicate that success in 2017.

The challenge will be replacing some of the top talent that graduated, including midfielders Billy Grant and Connor Finerty, and defenseman Josh Schafer.

The good news is that the Hornets return two of the top talents in the league with Sean Powers back in goal and Hunter Ferreira back patrolling the midfield. Joe Cox and Danny DeGirolamo will flank Ferreira in the midfield with Aidan Sacco, Brett Kessler and Brad Grant factoring in as well.

Offensively, seniors Cullen Murphy, Sam O’Connell and Jon Reed will be one of the most experienced units in the league. On defense, Grant Milas, Mike Zampine, Josh London and Tommy Donnelly will hold court in front of Powers.

“We are going to go out there this season and try to improve on the aspects we were weak on last season and just try to compete in every contest,” said head coach Tim Frias.

Milford

2016 Record: 0-18
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Doug Gallant

The Hawks are hoping for a turnaround season after going without a win a season ago. First year head coach Doug Gallant has taken over at the helm and is looking to make Milford a participant in the Davenport race.

The heart of the lineup could be in the midfield, with junior Andrew Gallagher bringing experience to the table and sophomores Ryan Hazard and Josh Ligor, as well as freshman Dan Farrell, providing the Hawks with skill and speed.

In the attacking end, Gallant will look to senior Alex Wood and sophomore Ryan Pearl, both with varsity experience, to pace the offense. LSM Nick Lurie and defenseman Harrison Bliss will be key pieces on defense in front of goalie Drew Mirisola.

“We have a great group of kids who are very eager to be successful,” said Gallant. “The reception from the players has been outstanding and they have bought in to my system.”

North Attleboro

2016 Record: 8-10
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs

After just missing out on the postseason a year ago, North Attleboro returns a lot of key pieces and will not only make a push for the playoffs, but should be in the mix for the Davenport crown.

The entire attacking corps is back this season Zach McGowan, Owen Costello and Colin Young all back again this season. Tim Lindstrom, who missed last season with an injury, will also be a key piece offensively for the Rocketeers.

Jack Dakin, the team’s leading scorer a season ago, will be a team leader from his midfield position while Nick Ward, Hunter Sarro, Nick Moore and Jason McNeany will all get minutes in the midfield as well. Poles David James, Zach Doucette and Tom Lockovitch, along with LSM Max Fontes, bring a combination of speed and size for the Rocketeers.

Dan McDonald is back for another year in goal and will be like a coach on the field for North Attleboro.

“He’s very solid in net and a great team leader,” head coach Kevin Young said of MacDonald. “Dan is that rare player that is like having a coach on the field. I think Dan is as good a goalie as you’ll see playing anywhere in Massachusetts this year.”

Oliver Ames

2016 Record: 10-10

The Tigers not only made the playoffs a season ago, but won their first ever postseason game as a program. Oliver Ames will face new challenges this season with the switch to the Kelley-Rex division.

While the Tigers face the task of going head to head with some of the top teams in the league, Oliver Ames will rely on team chemistry to try and get back to the postseason.

Offensively, juniors Owen Gallagher and Eric LeBlanc are back as two of the team’s top point producers. They’ll be helped by midfielders Liam Brown, a senior captain, and Jack Lang, a junior. Defensively, senior captain Phil Saba and senior Max Howe are two experienced players that will man the space in front of senior goalie Sean Cosgrove.

“The boys have worked very hard, and bought into our program,” said head coach Chris Digiacomo. “We play in an extremely tough league, but the boys are excited to get started.”

Sharon

Sharon just made it into the postseason a year ago, punching its ticket on the last game of the season with a win over North Attleboro.

This season, the Eagles are expecting to qualify for the state tournament again because of the experience they have returning for the 2017 season.

Josh Rotman, who registered 35 goals a season ago, is one of the top midfielders in the league and will be relied upon to lead the Eagles this season. Spencer Hall and Chase Waxman are also back and should make an impact on both ends of the field. Jack Lesser has the ability to get forward and play as an attack or can drop into a midfield role.

“We have a lot of guys with experience at this level returning, so we have set our expectations high,” said head coach Pete DeSisto.

Stoughton

The Black Knights are the new kids on the block, entering their first year at the varsity level after playing at the JV level the last couple of seasons.

Combining the JV experience and a budding youth program, Stoughton won’t be starting from scratch. However, the Black Knights are ready for what could be a roller coaster ride of a season.

Leading the way for the Black Knights are captains Dave Cellucci, Ryan Pierri, Harry Leal and Matt St. Clair. Leal will anchor the team from the cage, Pierre is the leader of the team’s poles and Cellucci and St. Clair are standout members of the Black Knights’ midfield.

“The team knows we’re going to be getting our share of bumps and bruises,” said head coach Pat Healey. “And winning here in the Hock is no easy chore. But it wouldn’t be much of a challenge if it was easy.

Taunton

After getting its feet wet last season, Taunton is looking to improve now in its second year at the varsity level.

Sophomore goalie Ryan Williams was a bright spot for the Tigers a season ago and now, with a year under his belt, will an important part of the Tigers’ defense this season. Senior captain Mason Baacke and sophomore LSM Dylan Nichols will be key pieces in front of Williams.

Offensively, Shawn Campbell will try to ignite Taunton from the face off X while senior captain Andrew Wellington, who had a solid season a year ago, will be a vital piece in the midfield for first year head coach Brendan Chambers.

Resilient Bulldogs Beat Feehan In Double Overtime

BROCKTON, Mass. – A lot of teams would have panicked being down 2-0 halfway through a playoff game, especially one without a ton of tournament experience.

But not these Canton Bulldogs.

#6 Canton erased a two-goal deficit, survived being down a man for a third of the first overtime period and scored the game-winning goal less than a minute into double overtime to get a 3-2 win over #3 Bishop Feehan.

Sophomore Ryan Nolte scored 48 seconds into the second overtime period – his second goal of the game – to give the Bulldogs the win.

“The word is resilient…these guys are resilient,” said Canton head coach Brian Shuman. “We saw it just at the end of the season when we battled back after being down 3-1 to Boston Latin. This is arguably the most resilient team I’ve ever coached in over a decade here. We know we’re not the most talented but there’s something about this team, they just don’t get rattled when we get down. I can’t say enough things about the entire performance.”

It seemed the momentum was fully on the side of the Bulldogs after cutting the deficit in half in the second period and finding the equalizer just over five minutes into the third period.

The Bulldogs had a pair of power play chances but that’s when the momentum changed. After 45 seconds of a man advantage opportunities, Canton was whistled for a slash to make it 4-on-4 with 2:32 to play. Canton killed 46 seconds of Feehan’s power play.

With just two minutes to play, there was a wild swing when Canton freshman Johnny Hagan ripped a shot off the crossbar that appeared to cross the line, sending the Bulldogs into celebration mode. The ref immediately waived no goal, Feehan went racing the other way and Canton’s players had to scramble back. It ended up being Hagan that sprinted back in time to thwart the chance.

A minute later, Canton was whistled for just its third penalty of the game with 1:02 to play, giving the Shamrocks a man advantage for the rest of the game. The Bulldogs didn’t blink though, and sent the game into overtime.

Feehan had the 4-on-3 power play for 28 seconds to start the first overtime. The Bulldogs were able to kill that but were whistled for another penalty with 2:48 to play. Not only was Canton able to kill that one as well, but senior defenseman CJ Martin had the best chance. He blocked a shot, raced in, deked around a defenseman but his backhand attempt was wide.

That sent the game into double-overtime and into a 3-on-3 situation. The Bulldogs rolled out Hagan, Nolte and senior defenseman Jackson Maffeo.

“If we need a stop at the end of the game, Johnny Hagan is out there,” Shuman said. “If we need a goal at the end of the game, Johnny Hagan is out there. He’s a freshman but he plays like a senior. I can’t tell you how many times at the end of games this year, he’s out there and makes a big play for us. It was a no brainer getting him out there.”

Bishop Feehan had the first opportunity but Canton goalie Quinn Gibbs came up huge. Shamrock senior forward Kyle Browne raced into the offensive zone and released a shot. Gibbs made the save with his mask, the rebound went right back to Browne, but his second bid was also turned aside by Gibbs.

Hagan raced up the other way and unleashed a wrist shot but his shot was kicked aside. Browne came back the other way but Nolte and Hagan combined to take possession back. Hagan then found Nolte streaking up the right side. The sophomore crossed over the blue line, stepped around the defenseman, faked his shot before switching to his backhand and depositing it past the Feehan goalie.

“Quinn, huge two saves there…Ryan Nolte, he just has a flair for the dramatic,” Shuman said. “He just loves to play in games like this. He’s exhausted, he’s out there a long time but he went and tried one more time and man, what a move.”

“Coach was telling me to dump it in but I saw I could make a move on the kid so I went around him and tucked it in,” Nolte said. “He tried to step up so I just went out wide on him. I knew I was going to go with the back hand once I got around the defenseman.”

Feehan originally took the lead in the first minute of the game. Josh Nelson sent his shot from the blue line wide off the boards, the bounce finding Connor O’Brien in front for an easy tap in.

Down 2-0, Canton didn’t panic and continued to battle back.

Canton nearly had the equalizer midway through the first when Mike Dadasis fired a shot that was partially stopped but the puck sat on the goal line behind Feehan goalie Derek Dattero but O’Brien was the first to it to prevent it from crossing.

Feehan had the top two chances to start the second period. First, John Anghinetti had his one-timer turned aside after a nice pass from Jason Sullivan. Just over five minutes into the period, the Shamrocks capitalized on a turnover from a Canton defenseman. Browne raced in, centering a pass for Jack Callahan’s tip in in front.

The Bulldogs got life just over the five minute mark when the Shamrocks were whistled for a cross checking penalty, just a seconds after killing a holding penalty.

After cycling the puck around, it eventually bounced out to Maffeo, who settled the puck and then stepped into a slap shot that rocketed through traffic and left Dattero with no chance at a save.

“By far, these first two playoff games are the best two games I’ve ever seen him play,” Shuman said of Maffeo. “He was phenomenal tonight defensively. He got that huge goal. That’s why he’s out there, that’s why he’s the league MVP, that’s why he’s who he is. I can’t say enough good things about Jackson, he really has anchored that defensive unit.”

“We just knew we had to play our game,” Nolte said. “We knew we were the better team, they were good but we had some good chances we just hadn’t scored. Jackson scored that big one to get us going.”

Canton nearly tied the game just before the end of the period when Martin tossed a shot in front that Tommy Kilduff got control of and lifted a backhand shot, but Dattero made a nice save to keep it out.

Three minutes into the third period, Hagan faked out a defenseman to get a chance but his back hand was just wide. On a power play chance, junior Nick Allen had his shot from the blue line whistle just wide as well.

The Bulldogs finally broke through to tie the game on the power play. Martin fired a shot that was saved but the rebound was left in the crease and Nolte pounced, pushing it across the goal line to tie the game.

“He was a fourth liner that didn’t see the ice at all in the tournament a year ago so this is his real first state tournament action,” Shuman said of Nolte. “For him to step up and be the player he has been this year, it’s just a testament to how good of a player he is. He has those intangibles that you just can’t teach. He really is someone that has a knack for the game and you saw that on the last play.”

Canton hockey (16-4-3) advances to the D2 South Semifinal to take on #2 Medway. The Bulldogs will play the Mustangs on Tuesday, at 5:30 at Gallo.

Gibbs, Nolte Come Through For Canton In Playoff Win

CANTON, Mass. – For the opening 12 minutes of Wednesday evening’s game, Canton junior netminder Quinn Gibbs was basically a spectator. Every once in a while, he would drop down to watch a puck dribble wide of the net for an icing, but was otherwise untroubled by the Pembroke attack.

That would not last, as the Titans would put 23 shots on goal in the final 33 minutes of the game, many of them through screens or from point-blank range. Gibbs would come through with stops on all of them, making 23 saves to record a shutout in the first round of the Div. 2 South tournament at the Canton Ice House.

Gibbs heroics kept the score level until late in the third period when sophomore Ryan Nolte fired in the game’s lone goal to lift Canton to a 1-0 victory over the Titans and a spot in the Div. 2 South quarterfinal.

“He played one of his best games of the season and we needed him,” said Canton coach Brian Shuman of Gibbs.

“Quinn’s tough as nails in net and against these guys, in particular in the third period both times we’ve faced them, he’s had some guys go in there hard and he just stepped up and just played big in those situations,” Shuman continued.

It was not until 2:49 remained in the first period and the game’s first power play before the Titans put a shot on goal and Gibbs was forced to make a strong save from the edge of his crease. In the second, Pembroke put eight shots on net and Gibbs was equal to all of them.

He was called upon again in the opening seconds of the third when Zach Simpson got free in front and one-timed a shot from four feet out but Gibbs stood tall to block it. A few minutes later he stuck out a quick toe to deny Joe Benting from the circle and Nathan Beath on a point-blank redirect.

Shuman explained, “You can easily get rattled when guys are going in there hard but he doesn’t; he’s unfazed and he made some big stops for us tonight.”

Canton came out of the gates flying and dominated the opening period. The Bulldogs had 14 shots in the first. Mike Dadasis set up Jack Goyetch for the best chance but the shot was saved by Pembroke goalie Justin Pijanowski. Tommy Kilduff stole a puck to the left of the goal and fed it to freshman John Hagan but that was also stopped.

In the second, Canton added another 10 shots (the Bulldogs finished with 35 in the game) but most were coming from the edges of play. Senior defensemen Jackson Maffeo and C.J. Martin both had several shots through a crowd and Bubba McNeice had a quick turn and a shot that was saved.

“We’ve been averaging more than four goals per game the second half of the season because we’ve been getting pucks to the net and bodies to the net,” said Shuman. “I feel like we got pucks there tonight, but no bodies. We were just a half second too slow.”

One player that was creating chances on a consistent basis was Goyetch. The junior forward was a constant thorn on the forecheck and his speed through the neutral zone created a power play and several scoring opportunities.

Shuman said, “Jack is a rock. Every single game you know what you’re going to get out of him and that’s energy. You’re always going to get a goalscoring chance or two…and we need a guy like that. It seemed like Jack was able to settle things down for us.”

Hagan nearly broke the deadlock just before the end of the second period after getting a feed from Nolte. The freshman forward settled the puck, took aim, and was unlucky to see his shot elude the goalie’s shoulder but carom back off the bar.

The Bulldogs struggled to get control in the third and it was Pembroke that had the edge in scoring chances, until the final six minutes. Canton was given a power play chance and Nolte made it count. He skated on the far side boards, circled back around and from the left face-off dot went high on the short side and roofed his wrister.

“What a shot,” said Shuman. “Ryan did not play his best game, and Ryan will tell you that, but he made a big shot when he counted and that’s what he’s all about. He’s a big game player for us.”

Charlie Malloy had a chance to seal the win with a steal and a breakaway but his shot was blocked aside. Kilduff nearly snagged an empty net goal in the final seconds but could not prevent the icing.

Pembroke continued to press and forced Gibbs to make a save and then watch a puck slide just wide of the post. It was exactly what Canton expected from a state tournament game.

“Typical D2 South game,” Shuman agreed. “As long as I can remember, we’ve had so many one-goal D2 South games. We’ve had a lot of one-goal games this year and we’ve been finding ways to win them.”

One of those one-goal wins was against Bishop Feehan and Canton (15-4-3) will face the Shamrocks again on Saturday in the Div 2 South quarterfinal at Asiaf Arena.

Bulldogs Shutout By Div. 2 South Rival Medway

CANTON, Mass. – Canton has been one of the top defensive teams in the Hockomock League this season, allowing only 19 goals in its first 12 games, but the Bulldogs have struggled at times to find consistent offense and that problem persisted on Saturday evening against potential Div. 2 South challenger Medway at the Canton Ice House.

The Bulldogs had one defensive lapse, leaving a Medway forward all alone in the high slot early in the third period, and that goal was all it took for the visiting Mustangs to walk away with the 1-0 win and the two points.

“When you score zero goals, there’s little margin for error and we had one back coverage in the zone and left that third guy high, which is where they generate a lot of their offense, and we didn’t account for him and he made a big shot,” explained Canton coach Brian Shuman after the game.

Canton had a hard time generating attack through the neutral zone, as the Mustangs clogged the middle of the ice and made sure to keep a forward in the middle to stop potential odd-man rushes. The Bulldogs could not get the typical breakouts that make their offense tick.

“They’re as good as a defensive team as there is,” said Shuman of Medway. “They always make sure to keep that third guy high; you’ll never see them give up a 3-on-2 or a 2-on-1 by being out of position. They play a good system that clogs that neutral zone, so it’s hard to get speed generated.”

Medway was not creating a lot of scoring chances early in the game either but had the best opportunities of the first period. James Anderson skipped past the check of Jackson Maffeo and forced Quinn Gibbs into one of his 18 saves. With a minute left, Anderson again created a chance and then Gibbs made the second stop on Andrew Diebus’ rebound effort.

The best chance for the Bulldogs in the first came from the defense, when senior C.J. Martin led the rush up ice and forced a Patrick Malloy glove save from the right circle. In the second period, Martin, Maffeo and Brad Murphy all had shots on goal for Canton, which was getting most of its chances from the defensemen.

“I think our wings in particular were really tentative and not doing anything on the breakout and the defense made up for that with their legs and getting the puck out of the zone,” said Shuman. “That’s why you have defensemen who can skate.”

Gibbs was forced into a good pad save to deny Jake Tomsik early in the second, while the best chance for Canton was created by freshman John Hagan, whose pass from behind the net to Tommy Kilduff was saved by Malloy.

Canton was outshot 17-13 through the opening two periods and Shuman was disappointed in the Bulldogs’ inability to get the puck deep and force Medway back into its defensive zone.

He said, “One of the things we didn’t do in the first two periods is get the puck down low and work from below the dot, which is what we do well, and we didn’t generate any shots from the point.”

The opening goal came 2:21 into the third period. Diebus drove the puck behind Gibbs and then flipped a pass out to Anderson, who was left wide open and gave Gibbs no chance with a one-time rocket into the top corner.

From the time of the goal to the final horn, Canton turned the tide and dominated play. The Bulldogs outshot the Mustangs 8-2 in the third but could not find a way past Malloy.

“In that third period, we had some really good chances and somehow didn’t find the back of the net,” Shuman said. “It just was one of those things where you play better and still lose the period.”

Hagan followed up a Kilduff shot but his shot was right into the goalie’s chest and with three minutes remaining Charlie O’Connor had an opportunity on a rebound after Malloy kicked aside a shot from Murphy, but the senior goalie recovered to save the second chance too.

Malloy made another kick save to deny Martin’s shot from the point through a screen, which have taken a deflection along the way. Despite the pressure, the Bulldogs could not find the back of the net and were shutout for the first time this season.

“I thought we played well defensively,” said Shuman. “Quinn played well, but if you score no goals then it’s tough to come out with the points.”

Canton (9-3-2, 6-0-0) will get back into league play, needing three points to clinch at least a share of the Davenport title, against Taunton on Wednesday at the Ice House.

Canton Weathers North Attleboro’s Comeback Effort

CANTON, Mass, – For 43 minutes, Canton was clicking and playing impressive hockey.

But in a two minute span, North Attleboro completely changed the game and erased a three goal deficit.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they were able to bounce back with one more goal late in the second period to pick up a 4-3 win over the the Rocketeers in a Davenport division showdown.

“I don’t think I’ve ever coached in a game like that were all of a sudden we were up three and then tied in a blink of an eye,” admitted Canton head coach Brian Shuman. “But that’s North Attleboro, they are dangerous. They shoot the puck harder than any team we’ve faced. Those guys can shoot and they had a couple good shots off and it’s a tie ball game, that’s how explosive they are.”

Canton scored a pair of goals in a dominating first period and added one more early in the third period and looked to be cruising. But midway through the period, the Rocketeers turned things around.

First, Hunter Sarro pounced on a loose puck in the offensive zone, corralling the puck and turning and firing all in one motion. Canton goalie Quinn Gibbs (14 saves) got a piece of the shot but the puck found its way over the line.

Just 42 seconds later, the Rocketeers made things interesting as Jason McNeany centered the puck right in front of goal, allowing a tap in opportunity for Sarro to make it 3-2 with 7:17 to play in the second period.

And just over one minute later, Will Yeomans knocked down a clearance and centered it for Erik Clements, who fired a wrist shot top shelf to tie the game with 6:10 to play in the period.

“No adjustments, we told them we just had to stay with our game,” said North Attleboro head coach Steve Snizek. “We came out flat; our team knew it and [Canton] took advantage. It’s tough to comeback but they showed a lot of character tonight which I’m very proud of. We came up short but there were a lot of positives – some negatives – but I thought the positives outweighed especially just being a man and showing a lot of character.”

Canton was able to respond shortly before the end of the period, a goal that turned out to be the game-winner.

Senior defenseman DJ Trerice weaved his way into the offensive zone and dropped the puck back at the blue line to Bubba McNeice. McNeice played catch with CJ Martin on the blue line before firing the puck towards goal. Junior Charlie O’Connor was able to get his stick on the puck to redirect the puck into the back of the net.

“Not only was it important for the scoreboard, it was important for the bench,” Shuman said. “A lot of guys were getting on each other to pick it up so that was huge. CJ Martin, that was the best game I’ve seen him play in two years. He was outstanding out there defensively, he skated the puck when we needed him to and then it was really nice to see him factor into that goal, he had a great game.”

The third period was mostly even, but neither side registered a serious scoring chance. North Attleboro had a power play opportunity with 2:47 left but couldn’t cash in. Canton was able to keep the pressure in the offensive zone to prevent the Rocketeers from pulling goalie Ryan Warren (28 saves).

Canton opened the scoring just three minutes into the game. After an offensive zone face off, junior Mike Dadasis went into the corner and dug out the puck. He carried it right to he near post and tucked it in for a 1-0 lead.

Tommy Kilduff had a chance for Canton midway through the second period but a diving effort from Vincent Zamiello disrupted the partial breakaway chance. The Bulldogs did breakthrough with just under four minutes to play. Jack Goyetch blocked a clearance just inside the blue line and raced in and found the back of the net while being tripped out in front for a 2-0 lead.

“We played really well in the first period,” Shuman said. “We had some really good scoring opportunities, it was nice to spot ourselves the lead but we left a couple on the board. We played really well in the first and then [North Attleboro] came back and killed that penalty in the second period which was a big momentum shift. The third was back and forth game, I thought they had some really good pressure on us in the third but I thought we played better defensively. The few opportunities they had in the second they buried and they played well in the third but we were able to play tighter defensively and limit the good shots.”

Less than a minute into the second period, Canton added to its lead. With the puck dumped into the offensive zone, freshman John Hagan unleashed a big hit in the corner the forced the puck to pop free. That’s where Kilduff ripped a shot from the slot to make it 3-0.

With the win, Canton moves within a point of clinching its seventh Davenport title. Even with big league title implications on the line, Shuman said his team treated it the same they do every league game.

“We say it all the time that every game is important in the Davenport and in the league,” Shuman said. “It’s cliché but at some point it rings true where every game is a championship game. If you drop any game, your chances of taking the league title are hurt. We treated this game like we did Stoughton, Foxboro and all of the other games. We’re a step closer but we’re not there by any means we have three very tough games left in the league.”

Canton (9-2-2 overall, 6-0 Hockomock) will try to extend its 11 game unbeaten streak on Saturday against Medway. North Attleboro (7-3-2, 3-2-1) will try to bounce back on Sunday against Mansfield.
