Hockomock League Honors 2020 Scholar Athletes

Below is a release from the Hockomock League regarding the 2020 Scholar-Athletes as well as the event program with student photos.

The Hockomock League Principals and Athletic Directors proudly announce the Class of 2020 Scholar-Athletes. The global, national, and local struggle against COVID-19 continues, but our persistence and resilience grows in that fight. The unique social situation in which we find ourselves pushes us to find new ways to publicly recognize and salute our heroes. The Class of 2020 will have much to remember about this unprecedented year, and we salute all of our athletes who lost this Spring season.

This week the League would have celebrated its 30th Annual Hockomock League Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner. Today, we are proud to celebrate each of the twenty-four athletes that have earned this League’s honor. Each scholar-athlete has been selected by the Administration of their respective schools and represent the top student-athletes in the Hockomock League based on academics, athletic participation, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship. They have all successfully balanced a demanding academic schedule along with participation in athletics as well as many other extra-curricular activities during their high school career. To be selected for this award represents four years of dedication and commitment, and we are proud of all their accomplishments.

We hope that these student-athletes will put all of their experiences over the past four years to good use and that those experiences will help guide them through the challenges ahead. We congratulate the parents and guardians, too, for your contributions and guidance as you have enabled your child to reach this level of excellence. We are certain that the foundation you have given them will carry them through future endeavors.

Canton Boys, Girls Hockey Teams Named Co-Champs

With both the boys and girls hockey teams set to play for state championships on Sunday night, Canton was ready to host its own version of a “Garden Party.”

But unfortunately, neither team will hit the ice at the TD Garden. In fact, none of the six hockey games scheduled for Sunday will happen after the MIAA decided to cancel them due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The MIAA also canceled all of the basketball state championship games scheduled for Saturday.

With the cancellations, all of the teams that were scheduled to play in the final are considered co-champions. The Canton girl’s hockey team shares the title with Wellesley while the boys share the crown with Lincoln-Sudbury.

There will be a lot of anger, frustration, and disappointment among other emotions. Time will tell if this incredibly tough — and rather unprecedented — decision the MIAA made was the best choice. While it’s hard to swallow, keeping student-athletes safe is and should always be a top priority.

“We understand this is disappointing news however, this decision was made in the best interests of all our student-athletes, schools and communities,” read a statement on the MIAA website. “Schools who would have been participating in the State Finals will be considered Co-Champions.”

It’s tough to put in words how unfair it is to take away this opportunity from those who have earned it. One thing is for sure, it’s heartbreaking for all of the players, coaches, and team personnel involved that started this journey together back in December with hopes of reaching this point, only to have that opportunity taken away.

“I’ve been in the locker room in the past trying to console players after a heartbreaking loss but when we found out about the decision after practice, it was like nothing I’ve had to do before,” said Canton boys head coach Brian Shuman. “Sadness, frustration, disappointment…the full gamut of emotions.

“I wish I had the right words to make them feel better.”

Over the past week, we’ve seen the professional sports leagues like the NBA and NHL postpone their current seasons due to the outbreak. The MIAA also announced that the start of the spring season will be pushed back at least two weeks.

As the week went on, school systems across Massachusetts starting to announce closures ranging from days to up to a month in some locations.

“It’s just really horrible for us and for our opponents,” Shuman said. “We both had remarkable seasons and we were both looking forward to closing it out on Sunday. It’s just really unfortunate, I’m really bummed out for the kids.”

The Bulldogs would have entered Sunday’s championship game with a record of 21-1-3, the lone loss coming to their opponent Lincoln-Sudbury back on February 12th. At the time, it snapped Canton’s 43-game unbeaten streak that dated back to the 2018-2019 season, a year in which the Bulldogs went undefeated and won the D2 State Championship.

While Shuman noted the goal was to always return to the Garden to try and defend the title, there has to be an extra layer of frustration that the Bulldogs won’t get a shot at avenging their lone blemish in a remarkable two-year stretch.

“The kids worked incredibly hard every single game, not just skating, passing, and shooting, but emotionally and mentally every single day was such a grind. Not just this season, but for two years. It requires such mental toughness and commitment. To go through that, and then to not have that final test or final opportunity to hopefully put the cherry in top of a remarkable run is overwhelming.”

Without the state championship game, it means the high school hockey careers have come to a close for over a dozen Bulldog seniors: Chris Lavoie, Tommy Vaughan, Jack Connolly, Dom Cammarata, Tommy Ghostlaw, Shane Marshall, Colby Ciffolillo, Timmy Kelleher, Owen Lehane, Johnny Hagan, Declan Pfeffer, Ronan O’Mahony, and Joe Cammarata.

The same goes for the six seniors on the girls’ team: Kaitlyn McLaughlin, Caroline Tourgee, Alexa Maffeo, Meg Aldrich, Rose Malloy, and Vicky Revanche.

It would have been the third trip in the past four years to the TD Garden for the Canton girls team. It would have been a chance for those seniors to skate together one last time, a chance to deliver the first state championship in program history.

Canton (19-1-4) would have entered Sunday’s D2 Final as the underdog against the top-seeded Raiders (22-1-0) but that hasn’t stopped the Bulldogs from winning before. Back in 2017 as the 14-seed, Canton gave a scare to top-seed Notre Dame Academy, and a year later, the Bulldogs nearly knocked off the Raiders in a one-goal game.

In the run up to the final, Canton outscored its three opponents 11-2 and knocked off #2 Norwell in the state semifinal.

Unfortunately, we won’t get to see if the third time would have been the charm for the Bulldogs.

Canton Beats Norwell and Heads Back to Title Game

BRIGHTON, Mass. – For the third time in four seasons, Canton will have the chance to play for the Div. 2 state championship at the TD Garden.

Three different Bulldogs scored in Sunday night’s state semifinal against Norwell at the Warrior Ice Arena and Canton’s defense put in a strong display of how to block shots and clear the middle of the zone. The Bulldogs skated away with a 3-1 victory and they will now face top seed Wellesley in next week’s title game.

“It’s awesome,” said junior forward Lizzie Tassinari, whose second period goal turned out to be the game-winner. “You kind of feel like a celebrity when you’re out there and you see your whole entire school and everyone you know out there cheering you on. It’s the best feeling ever.”

Norwell proved to be a tough out, with its speed through the neutral zone causing problems for Canton early in the game. Allie McCabe had to be quick to backtrack and prevent Margaret Leivi from getting off a shot on a break just a minute into the game and Carolyn Durand stayed tall to stop the loose puck at the near post.

Canton started to get some luck in the offensive zone through its aggressive forecheck. Ellie Rae Roberts nearly teed up Maria Femia for a chance in the slot, but they couldn’t connect. Olivia Maffeo got the first shot on target for the Bulldogs with a trademark rush through three zones and a wrister that was blocked aside by Norwell goalie Nicole Prescott.

It was a freshman defenseman that put Canton in front, but surprisingly it wasn’t Maffeo (who was coming off a four-goal game in the quarterfinal). Her Junior Eagles teammate Maya Battista, who moved up from Texas this year, sent in a shot from the point that fooled Prescott and snuck under the bar.

“Maya has been playing so well,” said Canton coach Dennis Aldrich. “She’s just a steady, stay-at-home defenseman. She scored in our very first scrimmage and I thought, we’ve got someone who’s going to score a lot for us, but she hasn’t scored again until now. What a big goal, so I’m so happy for her.”

The lead lasted six minutes before the Clippers found an equalizer. Casey Messina had her first shot saved by Durand (20 saves) but she stuck with the play and managed to squeeze the rebound across the line to make it 1-1.

Norwell carried the momentum into the second period and started with a flurry of chances that Durand and the Canton defense repelled. McCabe, Maffeo, Battista, and seniors Meg Aldrich and Alexa Maffeo were putting their bodies in front of as many shots as possible to kill off a pair of Norwell power plays.

“The amount of blocked shots tonight was incredible,” said Aldrich. “Every time I looked up, we were in a shooting lane. That’s kids who are putting the team and the game ahead of themselves because that hurts.”

Just four seconds into their own power play, and on their first shot of the period, the Bulldogs regained the lead. McCabe showed off her skating ability to gain the zone down the left wing. She threw a puck towards goal and it was picked up by Tassinari, who flung a backhand at Prescott. It was only partially saved and the puck trickled over the line.

“She kind of fumbled it a little, so I kind of saw the opportunity to take the puck and I shot it kind of blindly just to get shots on net,” Tassinari said. “We both saw it turning, her kind of leaning backwards and couldn’t grab it, and it was just trickling in and across the line.”

The goal seemed to energize the Bulldogs, who finished the second period with several chances. Ellie Bohane did well behind the net and put a shot on goal and the loose rebound was snapped on goal by Caroline Tourgee, forcing a pad stop from the goalie.

Leading by one heading into the third period, Canton upped the pressure on its forecheck and remained aggressive in the offensive zone.

“Everything we do, get the puck deep and establish the forecheck and just kind of remember everything we do every single day and tire them out,” Tassinari said about the discussion ahead of the third period. “Just never give up really.”

Aldrich explained, “We knew how we wanted to attack them and got away from that a little bit, so we went in the third period to more of a 2-3 because we were getting caught deep and giving up too many odd-man rushes. It wasn’t like they didn’t have chances, but I like the flow of the third period much better than the first two.”

Audrey Koen forced a pad save after dragging the puck away from the boards and then Tassinari hit Tess Khoury with a nice cross-ice pass but Khoury’s one-timer was skewed wide.

Norwell had a great chance to try and tie the game. Casey Ward raced into the zone and cut across the slot from right-to-left. As a Canton defender slipped, Ward suddenly had acres of space to wind up, but Durand was in the right position to make a smart pad save.

The missed opportunity proved to be costly for the Clippers. With six minutes remaining, Olivia Maffeo put the game away. She weaved her way through the neutral zone and into the right face-off circle. She showed great patience to pick her spot, lifting a shot up over Prescott’s glove hand and just under the bar.

“She’s pretty good huh?” Aldrich asked with a smile. “It’s fun to have a kid like that because it just brings everybody up. She’s the first one in line for drills. She has to win, has to be first, and it’s just contagious in that locker room. The whole attitude in there is different having her around.”

Canton (19-1-4) will face the two-time defending state champions Wellesley at the TD Garden. It is a rematch of the 2018 final that the Raiders won and last year’s first round game, also won by the Raiders.

Canton Starts Playoff Run With Win Against Norwood

CANTON, Mass. – Canton had allowed only 15 goals in 21 games coming into Saturday afternoon’s Div. 2 first round game against Norwood, including a shutout of the Mustangs in the regular season. So, it came as a little bit of a shock when Norwood took advantage of a huge deflection to tie the game at 1-1 in the first period.

The goal gave Norwood momentum that carried into the second period, but the Bulldogs managed to hold out and regained control, scoring once in each period and pulling out a 3-1 victory at the Canton Ice House and advancing to the quarterfinal round.

“For the last part of the period, they really came at us,” said Canton coach Dennis Aldrich. “We talked beforehand that no matter who scored first it was going to be a battle.”

Olivia Maffeo, who scored a hat trick in the regular season meeting between the teams, had the first good chance for the hosts with a long rush up ice and a shot from the slot that forced a save. Fellow freshman Audrey Koen followed up, but that was also stopped by Norwood goalie Jenna Mazzola.

Three minutes later, the same combo created the opening for the first goal. Maffeo had the first effort that was stopped and Koen forced a pad save from in close. The puck popped out to Caroline Tourgee and she slipped a shot under the goalie and it trickled across the line.

Lizzie Tassinari also had a good look for the Bulldogs in the first when her shot from the left wing was gloved by Mazzola.

Canton freshman goalie Carolyn Durand had only had to make one save to that point, but Marissa Cataldo took advantage of a loose pass to get free in the slot. Her shot hit the back of a Canton defender and took a horrible ricochet that left Durand stranded and the net gaping.

Maffeo nearly had the perfect response when she smashed a shot off the post 20 seconds later, but the Mustangs finished the first with energy and came out of the locker room with a flurry of chances.

Durand responded exactly as the Bulldogs would have hoped. The freshman goalie stood strong to deny Maeve Glavin’s drive to the net and then made stops on a pair of shots from Erinn Wagner.

Aldrich said, “Carolyn, as a freshman, her mental toughness that’s the thing I was really worried about especially playing with a team that’s had success in the past and knowing that she’s basically it. Not only has she handled it well but she’s embraced it and she’s been very confident.”

Tourgee had a good chance for her second of the game, but it was blocked at the post by the Norwood defense. Maffeo forced a blocker save with another strong wrister and then Meg Aldrich tested Mazzola with a shot through the screen of Ellie Bohane. Maria Femia teed up Tess Khoury for a look in front, but again the goalie was up to the test.

The breakthrough came on the power play and it was Maffeo that provided the dagger. As she raced up ice and just as she was gaining the zone, Maffeo let loose with a rocket of a slap shot that picked the top corner.

“They were trying to take Olivia out,” said Aldrich about Norwood’s approach to Canton’s leading scorer. “It’s not too often you see a defenseman get shadowed like that early on but I think they realized it probably wasn’t going to work too well for them.”

Five minutes into the third period, Canton doubled its lead on the power play. Khoury controlled the puck on the near boards and she picked out Tassinari alone in the slot. She took a touch before ripping a wrister, while being knocked down, that made it 3-1 and put the Bulldogs in a more comfortable position.

“I was waiting for another squirter too,” said Aldrich about leading by just a single goal. “I told them I didn’t think they’d get one more but I knew they weren’t getting two more so if we got one then we’d be all set. I wanted them to have the confidence that we’re not in trouble here.”

The Bulldogs hadn’t played in 10 days between the end of the regular season and the playoff opener. Aldrich admitted, “We had to shake some of the rust off. We had some uncharacteristic things, lost a couple of marks there, but hopefully we’ll fix that going forward. The first game of the tournament is really hard to win, especially when you’ve played the team before.”

Canton (17-1-4) will face No. 6 seed Ursuline Academy in the Div. 2 quarterfinal. At the time of writing, the date, time, and location had not been determined.

Oliver Ames, 52 @ Foxboro, 66 – Final – Tied after a quarter and separated by just a point at halftime, Foxboro created a little separation in the third and used a 22-point fourth quarter to completely pull away from visiting Oliver Ames. Senior Donald Rogers scored 16 of his career-high 24 points after the break, including nine points in the third quarter that helped the Warriors turn a 26-25 halftime lead into a 44-39 advantage. Both Rogers and Brandon Borde (18 points) connected on three-pointers in the fourth quarter while senior Ryan Hughes scored six of his eight points in the final frame. Junior Kevin Gallagher added 15 points for the Warriors. Junior Amari Brown had a team-high 18 points for the Tigers while Jay Spillane added 12 points.

Mansfield, 72 @ Milford, 41 – Final – Mansfield closed the third quarter on a 10-2 run and never looked back, securing a win on the road over Milford. The Hawks cut the deficit down to two (21-19) midway through the second quarter before Mansfield pushed the lead to double digits, up 35-25 at the halftime break. The advantage remained the same until the Hornets went on their run in the final four minutes of the third to take a 51-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Senior Sam Stevens led the charge with 26 points and five rebounds while junior TJ Guy had a strong all-around showing with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.

Attleboro, 2 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final

Oliver Ames, 1 @ Foxboro, 4 – Final – Click here for a photo gallery of this game. – Foxboro and Oliver Ames traded goals between the first two periods before the Warriors scored three straight in the final period to get the win. Kirk Leach put the hosts up in the first before Hunter Costello answered midway through the second for OA to make it 1-1 heading into the third. Foxboro sophomore Jack Watts scored less than a minute into the third period to give the Warriors the lead. Espen Reager made a handful of saves late to protect the lead while both Watts and Leach tacked on empty net goals in the final minute.

Taunton, 0 @ Franklin, 6 – Final – For nearly two periods, Taunton goalie Sean Bunker thwarted every shot that Franklin put his way. But the Panthers finally broke through with just over two minutes to go in the second and went on to score five more in the third to grab a win over the Tigers. Conor O’Neil put the hosts ahead with Sean Connelly and JT Dwyer recording assists as Franklin led 1-0 through 30 minutes. Kyle Hedvig tacked on a pair of third period goals while Declan Lovett (unassisted), Shea Hurley, and Andrew Demerchant also scored for the Panthers. Colin Hedvig added two assists while Lovett and Dylan Marchand also had helpers. Bunker finished with over 40 saves for Taunton.

King Philip, 3 @ Bridgewater-Raynham, 0 – Final – Joe Boselli scored twice and Jesper Makudera made 24 saves as KP earned a tough non-league road shutout. Boselli opened the scoring in the second period off of an assist from Nolan Feyler. In the third, Conor Cooke (assisted by Aidan Boulger) doubled the lead and then Boselli sealed with the win with an unassisted goal.

Girls Hockey
Franklin, 2 @ Canton, 2 – Final – Franklin opened the scoring in the second period and took a 1-0 lead into the third period but had to score with less than four minutes to go to salvage a tie. Franklin’s Amanda Lewandowski scored with just under two minutes left in the second period on an assist from Lyndsey Atkinson. But Canton’s Tess Khoury (from Maria Femia and Lizzie Tassinari) scored 14 seconds into the third period to tie the game. The Bulldogs took their first lead with 6:40 to go when Ellie Roberts finished off a pass from Caroline Tourgee but Atkinson scored the tying goal with 3:12 to go with Jordan Dwyer getting the assist.

King Philip, 10 vs. Shawsheen Tech, 0 – Final – King Philip’s Jen Daniels and Makenzie Shandley each scored a pair of goals as the Warriors skated to a big win over Shawsheen. Sydney O’Shea (three assists), Nicole Brady, Averi Maxwell, Olivia Donovan, Ally Donovan, and Sammy Robison each scored once while Cristina Coleman and Mallory Johnston combined for the shutout.




Wrestling
Canton, 30 @ Sharon, 49 – Final – Click here for a Photo Gallery from this meet. The Eagles recorded seven pins as a team, continuing their impressive dual meet record this season and opening league play with a win. Adam Landstein (106), David Gilman (120), Ammit Levin (126), and Vennai Chinnen (132) each recorded pins as Sharon jumped out to a 24-6 lead. Zach Peters the lone Canton points with a pin at 113 pounds. Aaron Cashton added a 10-0 win at 138, Max Pozner recorded a pin right as the first period buzzer sounded, and Kirit Gossetty added three more with a 6-1 win to push the lead to 37-6. Eddie Marinilli had a first period pin at 160 but Sharon answered with a first period pin by Tyler Freedman. Cillian Collins got six points for the Bulldogs, but again the Eagles responded with a pin, this time by Rhamsez Thevenin at 195. Derrell Brown earned a shock pin at 220. Trailing 5-2, Brown suddenly caught his opponent and managed to get a pin with just four seconds remaining. Ryan Richards closed the match with another pin for Canton.

Franklin, 53 @ Oliver Ames, 19 – Final – Click here for a Photo Gallery from this meet. Franklin took control of the dual meet in the middleweight matches and then closed it out with strong matches in the heavyweights, opening league play with a convincing win. OA was fired up in the first match when Nathan Lipski won by fall at 106, but the Panthers got those six points right back with a pin for Dillon Cashin at 113. Drew Difilipio was able to hold on for a 5-2 win at 120, but Remi Creighton tied the meet for OA with an 8-2 win at 126. Jake Carlucci (132) and Nelson Malone traded pins to keep the score tied, 15-15, but then the Panthers took over. Alex Fracassa had a second period tech fall to earn five points followed by back-to-back pins from Ken Sauer and Dominic Sackley. Liam Cogavin battled to win 9-4 at 170, although Onye Nwadiugwu dominated the third period of the match, and Dylan Nawn got a pin at 182. Max Anderson grabbed four points for the Tigers at 195, but Matt Walker (220) and Matt Leofanti (285) closed out the meet with pins for the Panthers.

King Philip, 41 @ Taunton, 33 – Final – Four Warriors earned wins by pinfall and another by tech fall to help King Philip earn a win on the road at Taunton. Sam DeBaggis (120), Jackson Kelley (138), Cole Ricci (160), and Hunter Hastings (220) each won by fall for KP while Shawn Conniff (195) won by tech fall up 17-2. Noah Riedel (145, 6-2) and Lucas Morreale (170, 5-3) won by decision for KP. Taunton’s James Collins (106), Brandon Mendes (113), and Xavier Sandoval (126) win via pinfall while Peter Ye (182) earned a 2-0 decision.

Canton, 4 vs. Sandwich, 0 – Final – Canton got the season off to a winning start with a shutout of Sandwich. Freshman Carolyn Durand made 10 saves to earn the win on her debut. Seniors Meg Aldrich and Caroline Tourgee each scored once, junior Ellie Rae Roberts added one, and freshman Olivia Maffeo marked her first varsity game with her first varsity goal.

Boys Hockey
Stoughton, 1 vs. Pope John Paul II, 7 – Final – Junior Jack Mahoney scored for the Black Knights while Ryan Spano played well in net.

2019 Davenport Girls Soccer Preview

Canton

2018 Record: 8-9-2
2018 Finish: Reached Div. 2 South Preliminary Round

The Bulldogs finished third in the Davenport division last season and made it back to the state tournament, despite carrying a relatively young roster. Now, a year later, Canton brings back a strong corps, especially in the attack, and will look to take steps forward to try and challenge for the league title.

The best form of defense may be the attack for the Bulldogs, who will pair juniors Olivia Rodman and Elisa Diletizia again in the forward line. The classmates are a dynamic pairing and critical to Canton scoring 52 goals last season, which was the fifth-best total in the league. Senior Morgan McCabe and sophomore Gabriella Herivaux add depth to the forward line.

In the midfield, sophomore Allie McCabe is coming off an impressive rookie season as a playmaker and will be the engine in the heart of the pitch. Sarah Collins will be tough to replace in the defense, but seniors Alexa Maffeo, Caroline Tourgee, and Kerstin Hansen are back. Sophomore Elyse Broderick is back to take over between the posts and will be the anchor of the defensive unit.

“I think the key for us this year will be consistency,” said Canton coach Kate Howarth. “Our girls are bought in and want to find ways to win! I think we will find ways to win some tough games and get better every single day! That’s always our goal. Every time we step out onto that field, improve and get better. If we do that, we will put together a great year.”

Last season, a young Warriors roster brought home the program’s first league title since 1993 and it could start a run of success for Foxboro, which graduated only four players from last year’s team that led the league in scoring and allowed less than a goal per game. Adding a year of experience could make this year’s team even more of a threat not only for a division crown but for a deep tourney run.

Youth was on display all over the pitch last season, particularly up front. Junior Jordyn Collins had a breakout season putting her speed together with clinical finishing to become one of the league’s most dangerous forwards. There is plenty of help for the forwards from the midfield, senior Lizzy Davis and junior Kailtyn Mollica are both dangerous on the wings, creating chances and the odd goals as well.

The lynchpin last year was a freshman. Sophomore Kailee McCabe, the reigning HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year, had a remarkable rookie season. She controlled the midfield and drove forward to add scoring punch. Senior midfielder Kendra Wentling also adds a layer of protection for the defense, which will miss the graduated Alex Stamatos but has experience in senior Yara Fawaz and junior goalie Morgan Sylvestre.

“I am so excited about this team and what we are capable of this season,” said Foxboro coach Katie Stalcup. “I know if we stay focused and work together we will do great things.”

Milford

2018 Record: 5-12-0
2018 Finish: Missed Playoffs
Coach: Lou Colabello
This is the second season in charge for Milford coach Lou Colabello and he is hopeful that his team will build a comfort level with his expectations and systems to try and get the Hawks into the state tournament picture and push up the Davenport division standings. With a strong core of returning players, many with two or three years of experience on varsity, Milford has the opportunity to make a leap this fall.

The midfield will be a strength for the Hawks with seniors Juliana France and Ashleigh Starks are capable of breaking up opposition attacks and turning those quickly into attacks. Freshman Daniella Atheron will jump right into the attack and is expected to contribute goals this season. Defensively, the Hawks have experience in the form of seniors Maddie Boyle and Annie Flanagan and can count on solid play from both goalies, senior Olivia Marshall, and junior Carly Ferreira.

“We are really excited about our opportunities this year,” Colabello said. “With a heavy nucleus returning on defense and in the midfield, we hope to improve offensively. With a good mixture of experience and youth, I feel that we will make a vast improvement from last year.”




North Attleboro

2018 Record: 12-3-4
2018 Finish: Reached Div. 1 South First Round

North Attleboro is entering a transition season after graduating 14 seniors, including nine starters, from last year’s Davenport division runners-up. The Rocketeers will especially have to cope with the loss of leading scorer, and 2018 HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Ashlyn Gaulin, but there is hope that the new faces will be able to step in and rise to the challenge this fall.

The attack looks very different this season with junior Tess Collins, who is battling a preseason injury, taking on the responsibility of leading the line along with Steph McKenna. There have been promising signs from that duo during the preseason. Midfield is more experienced for North this year, with seniors Alex Moulson, Abi Slaney, and Lily Cameron back from last year, while Olivia Wills and Abby Noreck are making the jump from JV. The defense is mostly new, but senior Lydia Hershey is back and will offer much-needed leadership, while senior Regan Fein has the starting job in net.

“Right now we have six players who have been unable to practice preseason with injuries,” said North Attleboro coach Bill Wallace. “Once we get everyone healthy we should iron out some assignments and figure out our rotations.”

Sharon

2018 Record: 2-15-1
2018 Finish: Missed Playoffs

Second-year head coach Catherine Sullivan will have a lot of new faces to work with this season after graduating 11 seniors from last year’s roster and she is hoping that the Eagles can use an experienced midfield to create more scoring opportunities and continue to improve over the course of the season.

The midfield combines technically-sound players with energy and speed. Seniors Marika Fillion sets the tone with her work rate and senior Bella Berger is one of the team’s top playmakers. Junior Amelia Scappaticci adds skill to the team’s passing game, while freshman Olivia Soby is expected to provide an attacking spark in the middle of the pitch. Up front, junior Emily Griffin will try to use her speed to create chances. In the back, junior goalie Cass Barbera got a lot of experience between the pipes last season and she will count on classmate Molly McAlevey to hold things down in front of her.

Sullivan said, “I’m excited about the mix of strong returning players and new talent stepping in this season. It’s a great group of kids who are dedicated to improving our style and speed of play, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together.”

Stoughton

2018 Record: 0-17-1
2018 Finish: Missed Playoffs

It has been a decent preseason for the Black Knights and head coach Tara Daniels hopes that they carry that over once things kick off for real. Stoughton has been building cohesion for the last several seasons and Daniels believes that there is the right mix of upperclassmen and newcomers to make the Black Knights a competitive team this fall.

Senior Nicole Weir has found a spot in the back line and will provide the vocal leadership that the defense needs. Senior Brianna Buckley has won the starting job in goal this year after earning time between the posts last season. Junior Mackenzie Manning is the key to the Stoughton midfield, having led the team in points in each of her first two seasons on varsity and continuing to be the team’s primary playmaker. Freshman Shayla Ford will step into the attack this season and there is hope that she can make an instant impact with her speed and finishing ability. One of the most important developments of the preseason is the growing understanding between Manning and Ford going forward.

“This year we have a strong core of returning upperclassmen that have worked the past few years to help shape and strengthen this overall program, with the level of play I am seeing from this group of upperclassmen and the freshman class, it is going to be an extremely competitive season for the Knights,” said Daniels.

Taunton, 1 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – For the second straight game, Taunton senior Jack Moynihan tossed a gem and this time the Tigers put a run on the board to get the win. Moynihan scattered six hits in a complete game shutout, striking out seven. Taunton scored the lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as Lucas Martins singled and came around to score on a base hit from Josh Lajoie. Attleboro’s Ryan Morry was also strong, allowing five hits and striking out three in a complete game effort for the Bombardiers.

Foxboro, 8 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Foxboro junior Michael Devlin shined in his first start of the season on the mound and reached base four times offensively to pace the Warriors to a win over Sharon. Devlin scattered five hits and two walks in a complete game, allowing one earned run with four strikeouts. Offensively, he had one hit, three walks and scored two runs. Joe Cavaleri and James Kaeser (two hits) each added two RBI for Foxboro.

Oliver Ames, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Franklin junior Brennan Rivera allowed just one hit and faced the minimum, tossing his second straight shutout to pace the Panthers to a win over visiting Oliver Ames. Rivera fanned 12 batters and had the one hit erased on a double play against the next batter. Scott Elliott (run), Alex Haba (double, run, RBI), and Jake Macchi (RBI) each had a hit for the Panthers. Reid Latham was strong for the Tigers, allowing four hits over six innings while striking out nine. Latham also had the lone hit offensively for OA.

Mansfield, 2 @ King Philip, 3 – Final – King Philip scored once in the second and tacked on two more in the third, holding on the rest of the way to beat Mansfield. The Hornets scored once in the fifth and made it a one-run game with a run in the seventh inning. KP sophomore Jake Silveria earned his first career win, tossing a complete game with just three hits allowed, two walks, and three strikeouts. Silveria also paced the offense with two hits and two RBI. Chris Daniels also had a hit and an RBI for the Warriors. Matt Scibilia and Nick Dumouchel each drove in a run for Mansfield.

Stoughton, 2 @ Milford, 3 – Final – Stoughton tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the sixth but the Hawks answered with a run in the bottom half to take the lead back and earn a win over the visiting Black Knights. Danny Corsini (2-for-3, run), Tyler Almeida (2-for-3), and Carter Scudo (2-for-3, run, RBI) had consecutive singles, the latter scoring the first. Corsini went five innings on the mound, allowing two runs on three hits and four strikeouts. Sophomore Mario Lee earned the win in relief, striking out one with one hit allowed in two scoreless innings. Jacob Kaplan had two hits for Stoughton while Kyle Gagnon and George Currier each scored a run.

Softball
Canton, 2 @ North Attleboro, 12 – Final – Bella Erti struck out 11 and allowed only one earned run for the Rocketeers. She also had a pair of hits at the plate and drove in a pair of runs. Ashley Cangiano led the way offensively with four hits, while Annabelle Hebard (two RBI), Olivia Capobianco, and Emily Nardelli each had three hits. Abby Gallagher and Alex Moulson each had two hits in the win.

Sharon, 0 @ Foxboro, 12 – Final – Alli Small went 2-for-3 for the Eagles and Penny Rabatsky added a triple in the fourth inning.

Franklin, 16 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final (5 inn.) – Franklin’s Emily Valentino allowed three hits, struck out five and issued one walk in a shutout performance, helping the Panthers win on the road. Maddy White paced the offense with three hits, a walk, two runs, and four RBI while Kylie Bouzan went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Franklin. OA sophomore Emma Varella had a pair of doubles while junior Katie Abreu also had a double for the Tigers.

King Philip, 3 @ Mansfield, 10 – Final – The Hornets took the lead in the fourth inning, added two more runs in the fifth, and then broke the game wide open with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure a win over defending league champ KP. Kara Bendanillo drove in four runs and the Hornets pounded out nine hits as a team. KP jumped in front with a run in the first and the lead lasted until the fourth inning when Mady Bendanillo homered. Caty DeMassi singled, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Ashlyn Conley, took third on a passed ball, and then scored the go-ahead run on a grounder to second. Mansfield added to its lead with two runs in the fifth. Mary Muldoon led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by Sydney Woods. Kara Bendanillo drove her in with a single and, after making her way to third, aggressively came home to score when a pitch got away. In the sixth, the Hornets’ offense put the game away. Conley, Ella Verheggen, and Casey Mousette hit three straight singles. Muldoon drove in a run with a walk, Woods reached on an error, and Kara Bendanillo cleared the bases with a double. DeMassi made it 10 runs with a two-run single. Sarah Cahill earned the win in the circle, striking out five. Mansfield coach Lori Letendre said, “Mansfield played with a lot of energy today and I’m so proud of the total team effort.”

Milford, 3 @ Stoughton, 6 – Final – Stoughton senior Karly Estremera had a double, a triple, and scored three runs to help the Black Knights beat Milford. Estremera and Jordan Lyons (two RBI, two runs) each had three hits total, Lexi Baptista added a pair of singles and an RBI, and Brianna Ferrandiz, Nicole Baker, and Sydney Menz each had a hit for Stoughton. Baker struck out 13 to earn the win. For Milford, April Swain (run) and Lucy Creedon (run, triple, RBI) each had two hits.

Oliver Ames, 4 @ Foxboro, 9 – Final – Foxboro held Oliver Ames scoreless in the first quarter and built a 6-2 lead at halftime that it never relinquished. The Warriors held the Tigers to just one goal in each the third and fourth quarters as freshman goalie Matt Tully made nine saves to help earn the win. Senior Pete Conley paced the Foxboro offense with five goals and one assist while junior Aidan Stapleton scored once and had two helpers. Senior Colin Bourne scored twice for Oliver Ames while junior Frankie Ireland netted one goal and had one assist. Junior Nick Gillis made 14 saves in net for OA.

Stoughton, 1 @ Franklin, 17 – Final

Mansfield, 9 @ King Philip, 17 – Final – King Philip senior Chris Longobardi won 22 face offs and senior Colin DeVellis recorded 10 points to help the Warriors knock off visiting Mansfield. DeVellis had seven goals and three assists, Robbie Tartaglia and Kevin Riggs each scored a hat trick, Andrew Sajdak had two goals and an assist, Sam Mattson recorded two helpers, and David Lawler and Matt Meehan each scored once. Junior Andrew McKinney made six saves in net. For Mansfield, Aidan Sacco (assist) and Connor Quirk each had a hat trick while Brady Kessler and Jake Quirk each found the back of the net once.

Attleboro, 10 @ North Attleboro, 19 – Final – For Attleboro, Rylee Fontes netted a team-high three goals, Sydney DiLiddo and Kyra Lyons each added two goals, and Ashley Piazza, Bella Salviati, and Campbell Compton scored once each.

Taunton, 10 @ Canton, 9 – Final – Canton held Taunton to just one goal in the second half but couldn’t complete the comeback. Caroline Tourgee paced Canton with four goals and an assist, Kaitlyn Goyetch netted two goals, and Leah McClellan, Allie McCabe, and Ally Reddish each scored once.

Foxboro, 16 @ Oliver Ames, 4 – Final

King Philip, 19 @ Mansfield, 9 – Final – Caroline Klim led the way for the Warriors on the road with eight goals and also added nine draw controls. Jess Sullivan added five goals and an assist and Caroline Watson held down the defensive end with 14 saves for KP. The Warriors also got a hat trick from Olivia Tormey, a pair of goals from Mackenzie Mazur, one goal from Ali Wilson and three assists from Victoria Tormey. Dana Truini also grabbed six draw controls for the visitors.

Sharon, 19 @ Milford, 5 – Final – Sharon coach Shara Ginthwain called it a “great team effort” and praised the Eagles for racking up 10 assists on 19 goals. Emma Eberhardt continued her strong playmaking season with five goals and four assists, while Jenna Goldstein added five goals of her own and an assist. Bridget McManus had a hat trick and an assist, Mia Lappen had two goals and two assists, Cass Barbera scored twice, and Maeve Barbera had a single goal. Athena Merck recorded her first varsity goal and Hailey Roseman added a pair of helpers.

Attleboro, 0 @ Taunton, 5 – Final – Taunton’s Barrett Hodgson and Tyler Goddard battled back from a one-set deficit to win the next two and complete the sweep against Attleboro. Hodgson and Goddard earned a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win at second doubles while the team of Trevor Hart and Alex Pugh picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at first doubles. Brett Beaulieu won 6-3, 6-4 at first singles, Charlie Fiske notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at second singles, and Dylan Kullas won 6-2, 7-6 at third singles.

Canton, 0 @ North Attleboro, 5 – Final – The Rocketeers won all five matches in straight sets to pick up a victory over Canton. Sharon, 4 @ Foxboro, 1 – Final – Sharon swept singles action and took one more match in doubles action to hand Foxboro its first loss of the season. Senior Danujan Thirumavalavan won 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, freshman Rueman Bhattacharyya earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles, and freshman Max Chen prevailed 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at third singles. Junior Alberto Olivei and Max Brody paired together for a 6-3, 6-1 win at first doubles for Sharon while Foxboro’s Noah Hicks and Justin Neale took a 6-1, 6-3 decision at second doubles.

Franklin, 5 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final – Franklin lost a total of four games in four matches in a road win at Oliver Ames. Liam Marr and Rohan Herur each won 6-0, 6-0 at first and second singles, respectively. Vayshnav Malhotra picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at third singles and the team of Saket Gandham and Shoumik Sompally won 6-0, 6-1 at first doubles.

Milford, 0 @ Stoughton, 5 – Final – Four of the five matches went to either a third set or a super tiebreaker and the Black Knights won them all, plus a straight set win at first singles, to beat Milford. Sophomore Waseem Sablon picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles, senior Erik Anderson rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win at second singles and freshman Anish Sinha secured a 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 win at third singles. Juniors Brendon Buckley and Jacob Khang battled to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles while seniors Hassan Khan and LJ Ferrandiz prevailed 7-6 (7-0), 0-6, 10-6 at second doubles.

King Philip, 2 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Mansfield junior Nilay Pangrekar overcame a one-set deficit at third singles, recording a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win to help the Hornets edge King Philip in a battle of two of the top teams in the league. Senior Luke Nickerson picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at first singles while Sam Donellan and Dheeraj Valluru recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win at second doubles for the Hornets. King Philip’s Marco DiStefano won 6-0, 6-2 at second singles while the team of Jack Cannon and Nate Ihley picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at first doubles.

Taunton, 4 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – The Tigers swept all three singles matches and grabbed one more win in doubles play for a victory on the road. Jillian Pagliuca won 6-0, 6-2 at first singles, McKenzie Lucie picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at second singles and Jocelyn Pagliuca prevailed 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. The team of Sam Martin and Brianna Fevrier recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win at first doubles. Attleboro’s Rena Danho and Jordan Bernardo emerged with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-5 (7-3) win at second doubles.

North Attleboro, 0 @ Canton, 5 – Final – Canton emerged with a 5-0 in a match that was played much closer than the final score makes it appear. Rachel Kupferman (6-0, 6-1) and Natalie Keppler (6-0, 6-0) both had strong showings at first and second singles, respectively. Sarah Hernandez battled to a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 win at third singles for Canton. Stelina Michaelidis and Rose Hazam won 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles while the team of Kiara Cerruti and Lily Hazam picked up a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win at second doubles.

Foxboro, 1 @ Sharon, 4 – Final – In a battle of Davenport powerhouses, Sharon earned a 4-1 win over previously unbeaten Foxboro. Senior Nupur Shukla picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles while freshman Valeria Barajas won 6-1, 6-1 at third singles for the Eagles. The team of senior Sophia Fein and sophomore Charlize Martinez won 6-1, 6-1 at first doubles while junior Lauren Glass and senior Sachi Basin teamed up for a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles. Foxboro senior Julia Muise recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles.

Oliver Ames, 4 @ Franklin, 1 – Final – The Tigers won all three singles matches and added one more win in doubles play to notch a victory on the road. Sarah Leger won 6-2, 6-0 at first singles, Maura Kiernan picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles, and Sarah Barron rallied for a 3-6, 6-2 10-7 win at third singles. Stoughton, 0 @ Milford, 5 – Final – The Scarlet Hawks defended home court by sweeping singles action in straight sets and getting two more wins in doubles play. Ashlyn Oliveri won 6-0, 6-2 at first singles, Juliana France picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles, and Olivia Marshall earned a 6-0, 6-0 decision at third singles. The team of Caroline Middlecoat and Francielly Rodrigues won 6-0, 6-1 at first doubles while Cristielly Prado and Ketny Sousa rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 win at second doubles.

Mansfield, 1 @ King Philip, 4 – Final – King Philip won all three singles matches and added a fourth point with a win at second doubles to defeat Mansfield. Erin Regnier won 6-1, 6-2 at first singles, Katarina Schneider picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at second singles, and Mia Valencia earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles. Sophomore Robbie Jarest had a two-run triple to push across Chris Sawyer and Jeremy Rhines for the tying and winning runs for the Warriors. OA took a 2-0 lead in the fifth before KP cut the lead in half with a Jarest sacrifice fly that scored Timmy Nault (three hits). The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth before KP rallied in the top of the seventh. David Morganelli allowed one earned run in five innings of work. For OA, Jacob Levine was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk, and a run scored and Chris Pearsons went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Matt Muir went 6.2 innings on the mound and gave up only two earned runs for the Tigers.

King Philip, 2 vs. Bishop Feehan, 1 – Final (8 inn.) – King Philip scored its first run on its first hit of the game and plated the winning run off of the final hit of the game to beat Feehan. Sydney Phillips (two hits) put the Warriors up 1-0 with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. Feehan tied the game in the sixth inning. Brooke Taute drove in Faith Turinese (two hits) with a single in the eighth inning to KP a walk-off win. Elise Pereira pitched a complete game, allowing five hits (all singles) and one walk while striking out four.

Canton, 12 @ Milton, 3 – Final – Seven different players found the back of the net for the Bulldogs led by senior Dylan Cunningham, who had a goal and two assists. Sam Walsh, Jack Albert, and Jace Emma made solid contributions in front of goalies Jack Connolly and Dylan Coyne.

Girls Lacrosse
Canton, 8 vs. Milton, 18 – Final – Caroline Tourgee and Leah McClellan each scored a pair of goals and both assisted on a goal for the Bulldogs, who also got 13 saves from Vicki Revanche in the loss.
