2017 Davenport Boys Soccer Preview

Canton

2016 Record: 8-7-5
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round
Coach: Danny Erickson

After playing a good handful of juniors and sophomores during the 2016 season, the Bulldogs look to be an experienced group heading into this year. Leading the way will be senior and two-time captain Jake Verille, who leads the Bulldogs from the middle of the pitch. Fellow captain Abe Garber is back for another year in net and senior captain John Agnitti with anchor the defensive line.

Verille, a HockomockSports.com Best XI selection last season, has been one of the top playmakers the past two years. On top of Verille’s offensive ability, Canton also returns junior Paul Corcoran – the team’s leading scorer (nine goals) and the HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year. Alongside Corcoran, the Bulldogs have a slew of juniors with varsity experience including Griffin Roach, Simon Cruz, Paulo Ruggeri and Avery Minkin that will all factor into the attack.

“We are confident that we will be able to keep the ball and attack this year,” said Canton head coach Danny Erickson. “The chances should be created, but we will need to finish. We will also need to defend as a group of 11 MUCH better than we did last season.”

Foxboro

2016 Record: 6-9-4
2016 Finish: Reached D3 South First Round
Coach: Joe Franchino

After graduating just five seniors last season, head coach Joe Franchino brings back the majority of squad that had just one loss in its last eight regular season games in 2016. However, two of those five players – Anthony Barreira (two-time Best XI selection) & AJ Bubencik (now playing at Mass. Maritime) – were four year players and will be tough to replace.

The good news is that while the Warriors were young a year ago, a good portion of the team has at least a season of varsity experience under its belt. Senior captain Shawn McNamara, now in his fourth year starting for the Warriors, will lead the way along with fellow captains Matt Rongione and Ryan Kelley. Senior Cam Cass also has plenty of experience and will be relied upon as a playmaker. Junior Shane Vandenboom had a strong sophomore season and will be an important piece in the midfield along classmate Nic Beigel and senior Hussiein Kafel.

Seniors Bobby Harrison will be the starting goalie for the Warriors.

“Coming into my third year, I am confident the team has bought into the system and I’m really looking forward to see how they compete,” Franchino said. “We have experienced senior and junior classes with a couple of sophomores to watch out for. We may not have a target on our back but when it’s all said and done, I believe we have the team to win! I believe in this group and really excited to see what they accomplish.”

Milford

2016 Record: 4-10-4
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Brian Edwards

The Scarlet Hawks are looking to take the next step in year two with Brian Edwards at the helm. After just four wins a season ago, Edwards is hoping that the experience gained by his younger players will translate into more success this time around.

Midfielder Andre Oliveira will be a key piece for Edwards and the Scarlet Hawks, helping both the offense and defense. Oliveira’s ability to transition from defense to offense will be key for the Scarlet Hawks this season. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Jacob Balzarini is back in the center of the defense. After getting plenty of time in that spot last season, Balzarini will be the anchor of the backline this year. On top of Oliveira and Balzaini, Edwards is looking for new players to step up and make an impact.

“I’m looking for us to be a team that stresses balance,” Edwards said. “I am hopeful that the experience many of these guys gained last year translates into more success in the standings. I am also excited to see what the new guys bring to the squad. There are a bunch of hungry young players that want to make their mark on this team and in this league.”

North Attleboro

2016 Record: 2-10-6
2016 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Geoff Burgess

North Attleboro boasts over a dozen seniors on the 2017 version of the Red Rocketeers and head coach Geoff Burgess is hoping that experience will translate into success on the field.

Leading the way will be senior and 2016 HockomockSports.com Second XI selection Gabe Pinhancos, who has been Big Red’s field general for the past couple of seasons. Josh Rodriguez and Ryan Pasquel are also back this season to help bolster the midfield. Junior Joe Hilf and senior Jeff Gale will be relied upon to pace North Attleboro’s offense.

Big Red’s biggest strength could be in the back, having a defensive unit with plenty of experience. Noah Barney and Zach Matracia both saw significant time and will be joined by classmates Andrew Fontaine and Kevin Aguilar. That defensive unit will be in front of senior goalie Brendan Matracia.

“I am hoping that we are going to be a team on the rise this year,” said Burgess. “I have a strong senior class and we’ve had a good summer and an even better preseason.”

Sharon

2016 Record: 11-4-4 (Davenport Division Champions)
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round

The defending Davenport division champs will boast a large senior class (14) but will also rely on some younger players as they look to win back-to-back Hock titles.

The Eagles’ tri-captains will provide leadership in each part of the pitch, with senior center back Shubo Roy-Chowdury on the back line, senior Tyler Hippler leading the midfield and senior Spencer Hall up front. Sharon’s attack will bolstered by seniors Marques Benton and Andy Reyes-Jones, who both saw plenty of time up top a year ago. Meanwhile, sophomore Michael Baur is back after a standout freshman season and classmates Isaiah Stessman, Brian Higgins and freshman Brice Nathan will all play a role in helping the Eagles go forward.

Maybe the biggest advantage the Eagles have is returning keeper Ethan Kantor. The junior had a terrific season in net a year ago and will be the backbone of the team’s defense.

“With a solid defense that is smart and has speed, we should be able to keep up with fast offenses while not losing the capability to support a potent offense,” said SHS head coach Bryan Kelly. “Overall, we are solid from goal to forwards, it just depends on if we can put the ball in the back of the net.”

Stoughton

2016 Record: 8-9-2
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South Preliminary Round

Stoughton will be looking to make it back again to the postseason, this time under first-year head coach Chris Suchorski. The Black Knights just made it in a season ago but it marked the third straight year for the program.

Suchorski is tasked with replacing 12 seniors that graduated from last year’s team. However, all of the players he is returning all saw varsity time last season and that should soften the blow dealt by graduation. Senior Tyler Melo (six points) is back and will likely be a vital part of the Black Knights’ midfield and attack. Junior Fabio Ponce de Leon (six points) begins his third season on varsity and will once again be one the Black Knights’ top offensive options. Brian Peoples also returns as one of the team’s top playmakers.

The biggest question could come with the back four, as the Black Knights must find a replacement for 2016 Best XI selection Goddy Fombe, who anchored the back line the past two season the sweeper position.

Canton, 4 @ Stoughton, 4 – Final – Canton erased three different deficits on the road to get the point while Stoughton qualified for the state tournament with the draw. Jordan Asnes opened the scoring on a volley into the far corner off a cross from Brian Peoples. Canton leveled the game to send the teams into the halftime break at 1-1. Stoughton regained the lead after a great through ball from Asnes for a nice finish into the corner from Tyler Melo. The Black Knights made it 3-1 when Loubensky Lucas found John Ortiz in the six yard box. Canton responded with a pair of goals to level the match at 3-3. Stoughton responded instantly as Lucus lifted the ball over the defense and Marco Antunes finished nicely into the corner. Canton tied the game with just over a minute to play to finish 4-4.

Milford, 0 @ Sharon, 3 – Final – Sharon built a 1-0 lead by halftime and added two more in the second half, going unbeaten against Davenport foes this season. Ben Stamm and Andrew Reyes-Jones each scored off an assist from Spencer Hall while Marques Benton found the back of the net off an assist from Oliver Hu.

Volleyball
Canton, 3 vs. Quincy, 0 – Final – Canton finished the season with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-16 sweep against Quincy. Emma Murphy led Canton with nine kills and no errors, hitting .529. Nicole Poole had 24 assists and 20 digs while Casey Shea and Emma Gobbi combined for 14 kills.

Foxboro, 1 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final – James Gillespie scored twice, once in each half, as Oliver Ames rallied from an early deficit. Matt Campbell and Thomas McCormick notched assists for Oliver Ames in the win.

North Attleboro, 0 @ Mansfield, 1 – Final – James Chotkowski netted the game winning goal with just five minutes to play to lift the Hornets. Max Gurnon’s throw in was headed on by Kevin Bouck to Chotkowski, who finished for the lone tally of the game.

Sharon, 0 @ King Philip, 5 – Final – Cam Mullins scored a brace, both off corners, and Connor Mullins recorded three assists for the Warriors. Colby Koch, Tyler Mann (from Larsen Keys) and Cam McGovern also scored for KP.

Stoughton, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Franklin built a two goal lead in the first half but the Black Knights stormed back with three unanswered goals to grab the win. Farley Asmath and Nitin Chaudury netted goals off assists from Liam Kapples to put the hosts up 2-0. Stoughton answered as Noah Schulze scored on a free kick from 30 yards out and then tied the game before the break on Tyler Melo’s strike from outside the area. The Black Knights netted the game-winner with Melo finishing off a cross from Jordan Asnes. Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter said, “It was an excellent team performance today from every player.” Salter had specific praise for his back line as well as Melo and junior Brian Peoples.

Girls Soccer
Attleboro, 0 @ Milford, 1 – Final – Milford senior Sydney Morrison netted the lone goal of the game off an assist from Kristen Franzini to help the Scarlet Hawks edge Attleboro. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj said Maggie Boyle and Ashleigh Starks both played well for the Scarlet Hawks.

Mansfield, 2 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final – Hannah Reiter scored both goals for the Hornets, including the winner on a header off an Emily Vigeant corner with eight minutes remaining. Stephanie Kemp assisted the first Mansfield goal. Emily Schromm scored North Attleboro’s goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the second half off an assist from Haley Guertin. North interim head coach Bill Wallace said Aine Mendonca played well for the Rocketeers.

King Philip, 2 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Avery Snead (from Maddie Smith) and Abby Baker scored the goals for the Warriors. Ally Filipkowski scored the goal for the Eagles off an assist by Alex Rabb.

Canton, 3 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Canton picked up the win 25-13, 25-9, 25-15 in what head coach Pat Cawley called a “great team effort.” Nicole Poole controlled the offense skillfully, dishing out 27 assists and adding two kills and two aces. Hannah Jerrier had a 10 kills with no errors, hitting an impressive .435. Casey Shea added seven kills with just one error, hitting .545. Julia Panico was “outstanding” in the back row according to Cawley, finishing with 20 digs. Erika Lum, Maria Mackie and Emily Lynch combined for 33 digs for the Bulldogs.

Foxboro, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final

North Attleboro, 1 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Mansfield notched a 25-13, 25-17, 19-25, 25-21 win at home over the Rocketeers. Meg Hill led the Hornets with 10 kills and six blocks, Olivia Broyles had eight blocks and played strong defense. Julia Harrison had seven kills, Jess Haradon added 23 digs and Chloe Peters had 33 assists and 14 service points.

King Philip, 0 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Gianna Barbosa stopped 10 shots, earning the shutout as the Black Knights handed King Philip its first loss of the season. Kelli Joyce scored the game winner for Stoughton early in the second half off an assist by Julia Russell.

Mansfield, 173 @ King Philip, 155 – Final – King Philip’s Danny McLaughlin earned match medalist honors, shooting a low round of 37 to lead the Warriors. Senior Jack Citarell finished with a 40 for the Warriors but picked up birdies on both the fifth and sixth hole to help KP. Sebastian Ladoulis and Matt Stanton both shot 39 for KP. Jason Hindman led Mansfield with a 39.

Along with Peoples and Melo, head coach Aaron Salter lauded the play of Fabio Ponce De Leon.

Volleyball
Franklin, 3 @ Brockton, 0 – Final – The Panthers used dominant net performances from Maggie Doyle and Meaghan Maguire to sweep the Boxers. Lauren Lockhart chipped in with 10 kills for the Panthers while Erin Skidmore had 14 digs, nine kills and an ace and Riley Marino had 10 digs and two aces.

Golf
Franklin, 159 @ Taunton, 189 – Final – Bryan Woelfel’s low-round of 35 earned match medalist to lead the Panthers to a win on the road. Matt D’Errico added a 40 and Eric Civetti shot a 41 for the Panthers. Justin Proto led Taunton with a 39 and Mike Volkmann carded a round of 41.

Foxboro, 39 @ Milford, 20 – Final – Brendan Foley ran a 17:10 to lead Foxboro, finishing third overall. Trey Lawson (17:35) finished fifth, Tyler Donovan (18:03) was ninth and Matt Kelly (18:05) was 10th to pace the Warriors.

Franklin, 39 @ Mansfield, 18 – Final – Mansfield grabbed the top four finishes and six of the top 10 to get the win. Kalin Petrov won the race in 17:29, with teammates Nick Rispoli (17:44), Collin Rice (17:50) and Patrick Heavey (17:56) finished second, third and fourth respectively. Franklin’s Everett Henderson (18:00), Mike Hagen (18:05) and Mitchell Regan (18:05) finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Taunton, 33 @ King Philip, 23 – Final – King Philip picked up its first dual meet win of the season by beating Taunton. Jack Angelo, Mike Griffin, Aeden Angelone and Mike Norberg finished second through fifth to pace the Warriors to the win. Taunton’s Dylan Lynch won the race in 16:40.

Foxboro, 20 @ Milford, 39 – Final – Foxboro’s Lindsey Nelson and Abby Hassman both crossed the finish line at 19:48 as the top two finishers to lead Foxboro. “They’ve been pushing each other in practice and working together in races, and that relationship will help me get the most out of them both,” Foxboro head coach Joe Cusack said. Sophia Mellen and Maddie Treweek finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for Foxboro.

Franklin, 18 @ Mansfield, 45 – Final – Franklin junior Nicole Clermont won her third straight league meet, clocking in at 20:29. Katherine Hartnett finished second at 21:08 and Ella Gutkowski was third for the Panthers, fourth overall, in 22:14.

Taunton, 33 @ King Philip, 24 – Final – King Philip’s Erin Quinn won her second straight league dual meet as KP held off Taunton, 24-33. Lucy Hamilton finished third overall for KP while Leia Quinn, Erica Layne and Brianna Aubin finished fifth, seventh and eighth respectively for the Warriors. Amanda Baptiste finished second overall to lead Taunton while Kailey Melito-Santos finished fourth overall.

Brian Peoples sent Lucas in on a through ball for the second goal and Lucas completed his hat trick by cleaning up a rebound. Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter noted the strong play of Tyler Melo and Luis Nascimento. Foxboro sophomore Shane VandenBoom score the lone goal for the Warriors.

Sharon, 1 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final – Sharon took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break after going ahead in the 20th minute but the Rocketeers found the equalizer in the second half. Leo Charlebois tied the game in the 63rd minute after Jeff Gale – in his varsity debut – set it up with a hustle play to force a turnover.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ King Philip, 2 – Final – Colby Koch scored off an assist by Jack Bush and Larsen Keys scored from a Tyler Mann assist to give KP a 2-0 lead at halftime. James Gillespie pulled one back late for OA on an assist by Matt Campbell, but the Warriors hold on to stay unbeaten.

North Attleboro, 4 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – North Attleboro junior Haley Guertin netted a hat trick to pace the Rocketeers’ offense on Friday. Ashlyn Gaulin also scored for Big Red while Aine Mendonca and Emma Gaulin each notched an assist.

King Philip, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – The Tigers got goals from Lauren Wright, Gabi McLaughlin, and Abby Reardon in the win.

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Oliver Ames’ Bridget McCarthy recorded her 1,000th assist in the win, becoming the first Tiger to do so in program history.

Sharon, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton notched a 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 sweep in what head coach Pat Cawley called a total team effort. Cassie Loftus led Canton with six kills and three blocks and Casey Shea added five kills and four blocks. Malia Claiborne had four aces and Maria Mackie added three aces and played well at the net. Sharon junior Jess Allan led the Eagles offense with 13 kills, senior Natalie Kane added six kills and two block kills and senior Faythe Gomolka had 13 assists from her setting position.

Franklin, 1 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Mansfield won the opening set but dropped the second to the visiting Panthers. However, the Hornets bounced back with two straight set wins to earn the match win, 25-10, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18. Mansfield’s Jacey Anderson had 18 service points, Anna Kemp had 19 service point and Jess Haradon played great defense and had 26 digs. Erin Skidmore led Franklin with 11 kills, two aces and 18 digs while Lauren McGrath had 18 assists, five digs and two aces and Meaghan Maguire added three blocks

Stoughton, 0 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final – Stoughton sophomore Molly Turner tallied 10 assists and head coach Erica Batchelder said Turner was a dominant presence at the net.

Brendan Sullivan put the home side in front in the 13th minute, converting a cross from Kevin Bouck. Sullivan then drew a penalty in the 39th minute and James Chotkowski buried it to make it 2-0. Jed Tolbert made six saves, recording his first career shutout. Head coach Steve Sheridan applauded the play of defenders Max Gurnon, Harry Braidt, Nick Hyland and Ethan Brill-Cass. Stoughton’s Brian Peoples had a strong performance, making his return for the Black Knights after an injury last season.

Dimitra Efremidis brought OA back within one eight minutes into the second half and Kendall Clifford scored off a corner to tie the game. Dana Lewandowski put the Panthers back ahead midway through the second half off an assist from Maeve Ledwith but OA had an answer again. Liz Nuss scored on a breakaway with just over eight minutes to play to tie the game. Christina Lucini had four saves in net for Franklin while Katie Vamosi had a strong day in the cage for OA.

Foxboro, 2 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – For the second time in as many games, North Attleboro senior Hana Caster and sophomore Haley Guertin were the two primary players in three goals. Each Caster and Guertin scored twice with Guertin assisting on both of Caster’s goals. Guertin’s first goal was assisted by sister Grace Guertin. 
Milford, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – Victoria Stowell scored two goals and had an assist for Franklin. Alexis Stowell, Jess Kroushl and Emily Mastaj each had goals for the Panthers and Megan Georges had a pair of assists. Brianna Braza and Rachel LeBlanc played well for the Hawks, according to head coach Jay Mastaj.
Stoughton, 3 @ King Philip, 2 – Final – Taryn Bates’ first career goal off an assist from Sarah Quattrucci proved to be the game winner for the Black Knights. Sam Tullis converted a penalty kick for Stoughton and Elizabeth Kashian scored the second goal for the Black Knights off an assist from Shanel Ford. Head coach Tara Daniels credited Samantha Tullis and Sarah Widrow with strong games on defense and said goalie Marissa Williams played outstanding. Rachel Hogan scored for KP to tie the game at one and Emma Corcoran gave KP its lone lead off a PK in the first half.

Taunton, 3 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Taunton picked up a 25-17, 25-17, 25-10 win on the road. Aimee Kistner had 19 service points, including five aces and a pair of kills, Emily Moor had 12 kills and four aces and Meghan Navarro played well with eight digs and three aces.

Franklin, 2 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final – Alex Sullivan gave Franklin the lead 10 minutes into the game and Dana Lewandowski doubled the lead with just 12 minutes left to give the Panthers a key win on the road. Head coach Lisa Cropper said Samantha Jones made four big saves on excellent scoring chances to get the shutout. With the win, Franklin qualified for the state tournament.

North Attleboro, 4 vs. Durfee, 2 – Final
Taunton, 2 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Liana Duarte opened the scoring for the Tigers in the first half and then assisted on Kya Enos’ goal with just over a minute to play. Duarte’s opening goal was assisted by Abbey Kingman.

Taunton, 37 @ Franklin, 23 – Final – Franklin’s Ryan Spelman finished first in 16:26 and then the Panthers took fourth through eighth place. Tigers Convert Chances in 2nd Half to Beat Stoughton

STOUGHTON, Mass. – Sometimes it all just boils down to the ability to finish.
Oliver Ames was able to do that in the second half on Friday afternoon and picked up a 3-1 road win over Stoughton to improve to 4-0 on the season.
After a back and forth scoreless first half that saw few spells of substantial possession from either side, the team’s combined for three goals in the first six minutes of the second half.
“We finished,” Oliver Ames head coach John Barata said of the difference in halves. “We had a lot of chances in the first half but we finished in the second half. Overall I thought it was a good game. It’s a tight field and we had something like 21 chances. They are a very good team, so we’re happy to play them and it’s a great result for us. It’s not the Stoughton of the past that some people would say it’s an automatic win. We had to grind it out. I think the biggest difference overall was simply we finished.”
It took the Tigers just over a minute to get on the board in the second half. A long throw from senior Max Ahern into the area that was deflected on by junior Thomas McCormick. The ball found it’s way to the feet of senior Keegan Nutt right at the six-yard line and he buried the chance to make it 1-0.
But Stoughton responded quickly, netting the equalizer less than three minutes into the half. After a foul roughly 40 yards away from goal, Stoughton senior captain Josh Mitchell stepped over the ball. Mitchell had a go from distance and with the sun directly in OA goalie Jack Carroll’s eyes, Mitchell’s bid sailed just under the bar to tie the game at one.
But just three minutes after that, Oliver Ames earned another chance on goal. At the top of the area, Nutt was able to evade a defender but was brought down after doing so to earn a penalty kick. Nutt took the chance, placing it into the bottom right corner. Stoughton goalie Kyle Silverman went the right way and even got a hand to it, but Nutt’s placement made it nearly unstoppable.
It looked as though Stoughton might knot the score once again less than two minutes later. Sophomore outside back Brian Peoples connected with junior Loubensky Lucas, who laid a pass off for senior Winston Kessah. Kessah hit a one time shot to the top corner of the near post but Carroll leaped up and punched the shot away and collected the rebound.
Just under 10 minutes later, Oliver Ames was able to add an insurance goal. Nutt picked up the ball just over midfield and found sophomore Mason Galbato. Galbato carried to the middle of the pitch before laying it off for senior Chris Romero. After dishing the ball off, Galbato continued his run and Romero found him right back with a through ball sending the sophomore in on goal and he buried it into the back of the net.

“Second half we definitely settled down,” Barata said. “We got comfortable with the distance. I have to be honest it’s an odd dimensioned field. Once we got settled in I think we moved the ball. It was a good game for us overall.”
Both sides had dangerous chances in the first half but couldn’t convert. Just over six minutes into the game, OA sophomore Matt Campbell tracked down a ball along the right wing. After a couple of touches, he laid a pass back for sophomore Cam Vella who ripped a shot at the near post by Silverman got there and pushed it wide for a corner.
Stoughton’s best chance came shortly before the halfway mark of the fist half. A loose ball bounced up for freshman Fabio Ponce De Leon but it was an awkward bounce that he was unable to get over and his shot sailed high. OA nearly got on the board just two minutes later when Nutt chipped in Romero behind the defense but Silverman was out to thwart Romero’s header.
Stoughton didn’t get any serious chances in the final half hour of play, which is a credit to the adjustment Barata and his staff made the break. The Tigers elected to drop center midfielder Nathaniel Cardoza a little further back as the back line was forced to deal with the sun in their eyes.
“There were some minor adjustments at halftime just to make the guys aware, especially with the sun in our eyes,” Barata said. “We moved Cardoza a little further back just to combat the sun. The sun was clearly a factor on the free kick but we were able to bounce back.”
Stoughton drops to 1-2-1 overall but were the first team to find the back of the net against OA this season.
“I said to the boys today that we never got started,” Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter said. “You know in the first five, ten minutes the ball is going to be high and it’s going to come at us. We held out well until halftime. We did our job with the sun in our eyes. We needed to get it going in the second half. It just didn’t happen for us today. I thought both teams did a great job today, it was a good physical game. It’s nice to see to see two teams trying to get the ball on the ground. To be fair to Oliver Ames, the better team did win today.”
Oliver Ames will look to continue its perfect start when they host Canton on Monday. Stoughton will look to bounce back when they travel to Sharon on Monday.
