Mansfield, 0 vs. Canton, 0 – Final – With a point, Mansfield clinched a share of the Kelley-Rex division title along with Oliver Ames. This marks Mansfield’s first ever Hockomock League title for girls soccer.

Canton, 3 vs. Duxbury, 2 – Final – Canton rallied from a two deficit to pick up one of its most impressive wins of the season, 19-25, 17-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-13. “After falling behind two sets to none, we came out giving it everything we had and battled for the next three sets,” Canton head coach Pat Cawley said. Cawley said Nicole Poole was the team’s glue, dishing out 37 assists and picking up 18 digs and two kills. Casey Shea and Emma Murphy were strong in the middle with 12 and 11 kills respectively – each with two blocks. Erika Lum was outstanding with 13 kills and 21 digs. Julia Panico was great in defense with 27 digs.

Mansfield, 0 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final – North picked up the non-league sweep 25-23, 25-22, 27-25. For Mansfield, Meg Hill had 10 kills and eight service points. Chloe Peters had seven service points and 25 assists and Jess Haradon had 20 digs and eight service points.

Sharon, 1 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Val Whalen led the offense for the Black Knights with 13 kills.

Taunton Snaps Skid With Win Over Oliver Ames

TAUNTON, Mass. – It was a play Taunton’s Adam McLaughlin has practiced over and over again this year.

With the Taunton Tigers holding a 12-7 lead and Oliver Ames using its longest drive of the game to near the end zone in the fourth quarter, the senior defensive back watched as Oliver Ames dropped back to pass on first down. As the throw came out, McLaughlin didn’t hesitate and jumped the route, stepping in front of the receiver for an interception at his own 8 yard line.

Taunton went on to score six plays later and added an insurance score in the final minute to pick up a 25-7 win, snapping an 18 game division winless streak and registering the team’s first Hockomock League win since November 2012.

“Me and Britton [Clinton], the other safety, we were watching the comeback, watching the seam,” McLaughlin said. “I’ve been doing it every week in practice, coming up on that seam and I just read it well and came up and picked it off.”

And after he caught it?

“Run as fast I could and get down the field, it was a great feeling,” McLaughlin said with a big smile.

McLaughlin brought the ball back to Taunton’s 45 yard line. Back to back runs from Brevan Walker (18 carries, 122 yards) and then a 16 yard rush from TJ Mendes gave Taunton a pair of first downs. After OA limited Taunton to just a yard on its next to plays, Taunton faced a 3rd and 9 from the OA 28 yard line.

The Tigers used play action with sophomore quarterback Noah Leonard (7/10, 87 yards, two touchdowns; five carries, 31 yards) rolling to his right. He then fired, hitting a wide open Mike Fernandez in the end zone for 28 yard touchdown and an 18-7 lead for Taunton with 3:33 to play.

“We just missed it on the drive before on the incomplete out of bounds,” Taunton head coach Brad Sidwell said of the third down call. “[He was] wide open, so we knew we could come back to it. Teams have been doubling Adam [McLaughlin], we had a chance early on his touchdown when he wasn’t doubled. We have that route he can go up and get it he’s so big.”

It was McLaughlin that opened the scoring in the game on the aforementioned play by Sidwell. After OA was forced to punt on its first drive, Taunton marched down the field on seven plays, covering 81 yards. A pass interference call kept the drive alive early on and Walker had runs of 19, six and 16 yards to help the Tigers move down field.

On first and 10 from the 19 yard line, Leonard floated one to the corner of the end zone where McLaughlin was able to leap up and haul in the touchdown to make it 6-0.

Oliver Ames had its next drive ended when Sam Krajewski picked off a halfback pass on the first play of the second quarter. OA’s defense did its part though, forcing a punt from the hosts on a three and out.

Kyle Gagliardi led OA on its most successful drive of the game, covering 43 yards on 10 plays before finding the end zone. The combination of running backs Liston Funai (17 carries, 94 yards) and Anthony Berksza (five carries, 37 yards) proved to be tough to stop on the drive. Gagliardi hit Brandon Timulty on a fourth down to keep the drive alive and two plays later, connected with Berksza on a screen for a 15 yard score. Leandro Moro’s‘s extra point gave Oliver Ames a 7-6 lead at the break.

Taunton had an ideal first drive of the second half, retaking the lead just three plays into the stanza. Walker was able to find some space on second down and then made a pair of nice moves downfield and raced for a 66 yard touchdown. OA stopped Taunton short on the two-point attempt but Taunton held a 12-7 advantage with 9:21 left in the third quarter.

“He’s a good runner, he had a really good game against Mansfield too,” Sidwell said of Walker. “We just have to keep him going. When you can run the ball late in the third quarter and the fourth quarter, it can wear on teams so that’s what we were trying to do.”

Oliver Ames next drive ended in a punt but the defense held Taunton at bay, forcing an incomplete pass on fourth down. That led to Oliver Ames’ 10-play, 48 yard drive that was ended by McLaughlin’s interception with five minutes to play.

“Oliver Ames had a good plan tonight to slow the game down a little bit,” Sidwell said. “We had a good drive early but then they played a lot of guys up at the line of scrimmage and we had to be patient. It was a good overall fight, we ended up wearing them down there at the end. That pick was big though.”

After Fernandez’s touchdown, Taunton’s Billy DaRosa recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. On third down, Mendes (four carries, 39 yards) broke free for a 21 yard touchdown with less than a minute to play to ice the game.

After Taunton nearly upset Mansfield a week ago – a two point loss – Sidwell knew the program was headed in the right direction.

“We were really emphasizing how we were playing better,” Sidwell said. “The Attleboro game we played better, the Mansfield game we obviously played better, we’re just trying to build on it.”

Taunton football improves to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in Kelley-Rex play. The Tigers will try to make it two in a row when they travel to Macktaz Field to take on the Kelley-Rex champs, King Philip. Oliver Ames (2-4, 1-3) will try to bounce back when they host Mansfield next week.

Canton, 0 @ Notre Dame Academy, 3 – Final – The Canton Bulldogs gave the defending State Champions a run for their money but ultimately fell 21-25, 18-25, 21-25. “They were definitely the hardest hitters we’ve seen this year,” head coach Pat Cawley said of the undefeated Cougars. Erika Lum played good defense leading Canton with 16 digs (along with three kills) and Julia Panico added 11 digs. Cawley had high praise for setter Nicole Poole – “she was awesome, making something out everything no matter where the pass.” – finishing with 18 assists and two kills. Casey Shea had a big night on offense with seven kills and no errors and added four blocks while Emma Murphy had three blocks and three kills.

Franklin, 3 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Franklin middles Meaghan Maguire and Maggie Doyle “were dominant at the net” according to Panther head coach Kate Horsmann. Maguire registered a pair of kills and five blocks while Doyle had two aces and three blocks. Erin Skidmore had four aces, 16 service points, eight kills and four digs for the Panthers while Ellie Wisniewski chipped in with five kills and Maddie Kuzio had 18 digs and an ace.

Franklin, 2 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Franklin senior Dana Lewandowski netted what turned out to be the game winner just five minutes into the first half as the Panthers picked up their seventh win of the season. Sophomore Annie Walsh scored with just under three minutes remaining to ice the game for Franklin. Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said Kate Morse “did an outstanding job in the midfield” for the Panthers.

Taunton, 0 @ Stoughton, 4 – Final – Olivia Schlehuber led Stoughton’s offense, scoring a pair of goals in the win. Julia Russell and Kelli Joyce scored each scored once for the Black Knights. Gianna Barbosa and Meghan McSweeney combined for the shutout in goal.

Stoughton answered as Noah Schulze scored on a free kick from 30 yards out and then tied the game before the break on Tyler Melo’s strike from outside the area. The Black Knights netted the game-winner with Melo finishing off a cross from Jordan Asnes. Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter said, “It was an excellent team performance today from every player.” Salter had specific praise for his back line as well as Melo and junior Brian Peoples.

Attleboro, 0 @ Milford, 1 – Final – Milford senior Sydney Morrison netted the lone goal of the game off an assist from Kristen Franzini to help the Scarlet Hawks edge Attleboro. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj said Maggie Boyle and Ashleigh Starks both played well for the Scarlet Hawks.

Mansfield, 2 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final – Hannah Reiter scored both goals for the Hornets, including the winner on a header off an Emily Vigeant corner with eight minutes remaining. Julia Panico was “outstanding” in the back row according to Cawley, finishing with 20 digs. Erika Lum, Maria Mackie and Emily Lynch combined for 33 digs for the Bulldogs.

Outlook:
Attleboro has developed as a program under head coach Mike Strachan and continues to be one of the teams contend with for the Kelley-Rex title even with a number of new faces on the roster heading into this fall. Even with the loss of standout lineman Kyle Murphy, the Bombardiers will have size on both sides of the ball and use that to control the line of scrimmage.

Offensively, senior quarterback Tyler McGovern returns after an injury knocked him out of the starting lineup midway through last season. He gives Attleboro the chance to look downfield, while junior Cam Furtado stepped in at QB last year and proved to be a dynamic athlete who opened up defenses with his legs.

The offense will flow behind senior lineman Andrew Gingras. At 6’5 and 285 pounds, Gingras will be counted on to open holes for senior running back Sam Corrado and also provide a stout run stopper on defense. Corrado will also provide help at linebacker and on special teams.

“The 2016 Bombardiers are a young team with many players that will be competing for time both offensively and defensively,” said Strachan, who is confident that despite the youth on the roster that Attleboro will be a team to watch this fall.

Franklin

Outlook:
There is a lot of energy in the Franklin camp over the past couple of weeks, as new head coach Eian Bain takes over from longtime coach Brad Sidwell and looks to give the Panthers a boost after three straight one-win seasons in the Kelley-Rex division. Bain said that he expects there to be a “different vibe” from the team this season.

The Panthers have a lot of experience coming back this season starting in the backfield with quarterbacks Jake Noviello (junior) and Alex Cregg (senior), who both saw action last season. Whoever is starting will have a host of experienced receivers to look for with Eddie Scannapieco, Packie Watson, and Joey Blasie on the outside and 6’5 Connor Peterson at tight end. The bulk of the offense will run through senior tailback Jacob Wolowacki, who emerged last year as a go-to back with three touchdown runs.

Defensively, Franklin has a lot of talent returning in the back seven led by senior safety Jake Lyons, who will also help out as a running back on offense. The secondary also includes Kyle McInery and Nick Gordon with Justin O’Callahan, Bruce Johnson and Khyler Colella manning the linebacker positions. Brad Jarosz will add size to the defensive end position.

Bain said, “It has been an uptempo, high energy camp in Franklin. Players have answered the bell every step of the way to learn both new offensive and defensive systems. While still a work in progress, the team is making strides every day.”

Outlook:
King Philip got off to a rough start last season, but managed to turn things around with a dramatic victory at Mansfield and won three out of four to get back into the postseason. The Warriors could be inconsistent on the offensive side of the ball in 2015, but with experienced skill position players coming back KP could be ready to challenge for the league title.

It begins in the backfield with senior quarterback John DeLuca, who is ready for his third year as the starter and is one of the toughest signal callers in the league. This season, DeLuca will have a number of weapons to help put points on the board. Senior running back Sean Garrity will add speed to the edge for the Warriors, while his classmate Giovanni Fernandez is a power back to add another dimension inside the red zone. Senior Michael Mello returns to add experience to the receiving corps.

The strength of the Warriors under head coach Brian Lee has been defense and line play and this season should be no different. Seniors Paul Macrina, Michael Sullivan, and Daniel Loewen will be major factors on both sides of the ball. Senior Alex Olsen has the potential to be the defensive MVP this year taking over the role of graduated linebacker Cory Lombardo. Fernandez and fellow senior Brett Mazur will add strength to the linebacker position as well.

Mansfield

Outlook:
Mansfield’s defense held teams to 15 or fewer points in all but two games last year. Only St. John’s Prep and Marshfield (two teams ranked in the top five in the state when they faced the Hornets) were able to get any rhythm going offensively against the Hornets. Despite strength on that side of the ball, Mansfield struggled to find consistency on offense and ended up one point short of a share of the Kelley-Rex division title.

This season, the Hornets offense could be a huge strength with a number of playmakers returning. Senior quarterback Anthony DeGirolamo will be the starter for the second season in a row and will have a strong backfield around him with senior Brian Lynch as the power back and Nick Graham giving Mansfield speed to the edges. DeGirolamo will be able to aim for junior Hunter Ferreira, who has emerged as one of the top receivers in the league, and senior Ben Budwey.

On defense, the front seven will once again be a strong feature for the Hornets. A.J. Gibbs, Colin Gibbons, and Andrew Ducharme add size and strength on both sides of the ball, while senior linebacker Travis Sjoberg is a leader with the potential for hitting triple digits in tackles this fall. Senior placekicker Diogo DeSousa is a weapon in special teams after being recognized at kicking camps over the summer.

“We are a senior team (30 seniors),” said Mansfield head coach Mike Redding, “but we have some very talented juniors and sophomores that will help us win this year and give us some great depth”

Outlook:
Oliver Ames head coach Mike Holland is entering his second season in charge of the Tigers and will also be managing the program’s first fall in the Kelley-Rex division. In the last three games of 2015, OA beat Norwell and North Quincy and battled Sharon in a three-point loss on Thanksgiving Day, building momentum heading into this season.

The Tigers are excited about the potential of the offense with two quarterbacks who can make plays with their feet or their arms. Kyle Gagliardi and Travis Campbell are in the mix to be the starter and Holland expressed confidence in both of his seniors. OA also has a strong running game with senior Liston Funai leading the way for a group of backs that provide the Tigers with toughness and the ability to find open space.

OA has a lot of experience returning on the defensive side of the ball. Jack Mills will be a force on both the offensive and defensive line, while Jay Fruci and Leandro Moro will provide a spark from the linebacker spot. The secondary has also been boosted by Noah Fitzgerald and Michael Mulrean. “[We] have an excellent group of seniors and younger guys,” said Holland. “Kids are working hard and putting in strong efforts in all phases.”

Outlook:
The Tigers have a new coaching staff this fall, but it will be one that is very familiar to fans of the Hockomock League. Brad Sidwell moved to Taunton after 20 years in charge of the Franklin program. Sidwell comes into his new position with plenty of experience in the league and an experienced roster that has 14 returning starters, but the Tigers enter 2016 without a Kelley-Rex win since 2012.

There is optimism in the camp this preseason because of the large number of returning players and because of the size that Taunton boasts on the front line. Senior Zakim Harrow checks in at 6’2 and 335 pounds, his classmate Sylvester English is 6’1 and 290 pounds and junior Paul Carrao is 6’3 and 270 pounds. Those players will open holes on both sides of the ball and create space for playmakers such as senior linebacker Mike Fernandez and senior running back Brevan Walker.

There is a battle for the quarterback position this season. Junior Collin Hunter threw 11 touchdown passes last fall but sophomore Noah Leonard has impressed in camp and could snag the starting spot for Friday night’s opener at New Bedford. Whoever is under center will have a couple of strong targets to aim for with senior receivers Adam McLaughlin and Sam Krajewski and senior tight end Andrew Wellington all back.

“We’re just looking for improvement everyday,” Sidwell said. “Hopefully with a little confidence we can get off to a good start.”

TAUNTON, Mass. – The 2016 Taunton Tigers team is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.
Unfortunately for 10th seeded Plymouth South, the Tigers came out roaring and raced away with a 83-54 win over the Panthers.
Now corny movie quotes aside, Taunton has been plagued by inconsistency throughout this year’s campaign, the most recent example a double-digit win over New Bedford followed by a double-digit loss to the same team in a week’s time.
But there was no doubt that 7th seeded Taunton came to play in their playoff opener, controlling the tempo of the game from the start, using a strong defensive effort and clicking on offense for a big win.
”That was the good Tigers team tonight,” Taunton head coach Charlie Dacey said. “You’ve seen the bad Tigers before, but tonight was the good Tigers. It’s pretty good to be playing well in March. You can see my frustration over the year looking for this, because i know it’s there. They stepped to the plate tonight. I thought our defensive intensity was good the whole night. And offensively, when we get in the full court, we can go.”
Taunton trailed for merely the first three minutes of the game. Junior Tommy MacLean took a charge midway through the quarter and Jose Mercado drained a three on the other side to help Taunton create a three possession lead. Mercado scored 10 points in the opening quarter but two fouls forced him to the bench for the rest of the first half.
The Tigers had their best defensive quarter in the second, allowing the Panthers just eight points, half of which came from the free throw line. Carlos Borrero found MacLean for a corner three to stretch Taunton’s lead to 24-11. Lens Esquil and Brevan Walker both came off the bench to provide a spark, each scoring to keep the Tigers lead in double figures. Walker drained a corner three inside the final minute to put Taunton up 32-19 at the break.
“They’re moving the ball around and that’s something we’ve been focused on,” Dacey said. Taunton had 20 assists in the game. “The ball recently hasn’t been moving as well but now it is, side to side. You have to do that to have an effective offense.”
The Panthers capitalized on some offensive rebounds and turnovers to cut the deficit to single digits to start the second half but a three from MacLean and a Roberson layup (off a MacLean assist) stretched the lead by to 14.
Taunton’s pace seemed to wear on the Panthers, who were able to keep pace in the first quarter but while Plymouth South slowed, the Tigers kept the pace up.
“That’s the way we’ve been playing for 32 minutes all year long so it’s not a stress for us to play the whole game like that,” Dacey said. “We want to fly. I’ll take some turnovers but we want to get teams backpedalling and get up fast.”
Jose Mercado added nine points in the third quarter, starting the game a perfect 7-7 from the field, including 4-4 from three point range.Mercado finished with a game-high 28 points on 79% shooting.
“I was feeling it,” Mercado said. “I just kept shooting, they were giving me some space since I’m the center and they think I might attack the basket so I can just pull up. I wasn’t thinking about the fouls coming out in the second, I just wanted to play.”
“He’s a matchup nightmare,” Dacey said of Mercado, who sat the entire second quarter because of foul trouble. “I’m not sure what Newton North will do but he’s our answer for them. They’re going to want to pound it in down low and we’re going to run our perimeter stuff.
A three from Mercado capped a 26 point quarter for Taunton and put the Tigers ahead by 20 (58-38) to start the final quarter.
Taunton’s offense kept rolling in the final frame with Mercado adding another nine points and Borrero getting eight of his 10 points in the final frame. The Tigers won the fourth quarter 25-16, giving them the 29 point win.
The Tigers were able to hold Plymouth South’s top scorer Ryan Morrissey, who went over the 1,000 mark for his career earlier this season, to 16 points on 3-13 shooting. 10 of his points came from free throws.
“We were focusing on Morrissey,” Dacey said. “Dom [Smith] did a nice job and kept him in front of him for a good portion of the game. That was real important for us because Morrissey can really screw up a defense when he gets in the gaps and penetrates. It wasn’t a loud 16 points for him.”
Along with Mercado’s 28 points, junior Quan Roberson had a double-double with 16 points and was a big factor on the boards with 10 rebounds. Borrero and MacLean each had 10 points while they combined for 13 assists. Walker and Esquil combined for 15 points off the bench.
Taunton (16-5) advances to the D1 South Quarterfinals to take on #2 Newton North. Newton North (20-3) picked up a 63-49 win over Xaverian. The game will be played at Newton North at 6:30 on Friday.
“Newton North is an excellent defensive team. They cut the court in halfcourt in half, they make you play on a quarter of a court. They also switch all the screens, like a Mansfield type of things. Those are two things we have to work on.”

Matt Ehrlich added 13 points, including 12 in the vital second quarter rally. Christian Weber added 12 points and Nick Baskin chipped in with 10 points. 

#7 Taunton, 83 vs. #10 Plymouth South, 54 – Final – Jose Mercado scored 28 points in just three quarters of play because of foul trouble to lead the Tigers. Along with Mercado’s 28 points, junior Quan Roberson had a double-double with 16 points and was a big factor on the boards with 10 rebounds. Carlos Borrero and Tommy MacLean each had 10 points while they combined for 13 assists. Brevan Walker and Lens Esquil combined for 15 points off the bench.
D2 South
#3 Foxboro, 68 vs. #14 Nauset, 53 – Final – Foxboro grabbed a lead after the first quarter, grew it by halftime and stretched it to as much as 20 points in the second half. Senior Jason Procaccini scored a team-high 15 points while classmates Rob Lowey added 15 points and Jonathan Carnino had 11 points.

#15 Sharon, 52 @ #2 Whitman-Hanson, 54 – Final – Sharon used a full court press to come back from a double-digit first half deficit and take its first lead, 50-49, with 2:25 to play. The Eagles were unable to take the lead in a tie game and the Panthers sank two free throws with 0.2 seconds left to get the win. Mitchell Sirota led Sharon with career-high 17 points and Tyler Smith added 11 points.
