MANSFIELD, Mass. – Mansfield junior Kevin Bouck picked a pretty good time to score his first goal of the season, giving the Hornets the lead with less than a minute to play in the first half.

Senior Jake Staples picked an even better time for his.

Staples got on the end of a long free kick from junior Max Gurnon, lunging in the area to get his head to the ball and find the back of the net to break a tie game with just over 10 minutes to play.

The goal would hold up over the final minutes and Mansfield picked up a 2-1 win over King Philip in the Second Round of the D1 South tournament.

“All three games that we’ve played have been anyone’s match,” Mansfield head coach Steve Sheridan said. “There’s been a total of five goals in the three games, it’s always a hard fought game. They’re great. [Joe] Kellett to me is one of the best players around, he’s unbelievable. I can’t say enough about him or Cam [Mullins], they’re both great players.”

After a delay for continuation, the referee whistled KP for a high kick just before midfield. Gurnon hit a line drive ball right over the top of the defense and Staples sprinted in right behind and headed the ball in for the game winner.

“We’re not used to having someone like Staples do a diving header but you know, it was a beautiful goal,” Sheridan said. “We’re a deep team…certain guys in certain games. Staples was playing great in the first half and I put him back in in the second half and he scores that great game winning goal. Kevin only played the last eight minutes in the first half and scored the goal. He came off the bench cold too.”

It was a battle throughout the first half, and really throughout the entire game. King Philip sophomore Larsen Keys had the first chance of the game, taking a cross from junior Colby Koch but his shot went just wide at the far post.

In the 14th minute, Tyler Mann ripped in a cross that was dropped by Mansfield goalie Michael Kirejczyk but he was able to get a touch to the loose ball and it was cleared away.

Mansfield’s first chance came in the 19th minute as Jareme DiLirenzo muscled his way through KP’s defense and unleashed a shot from a tight angle but Brandon Ziolkowski was in position at the near post.

The Warriors dominated possession over the final 10 minutes of the first half, stringing together at least a spell of over a dozen passes before a cross was collected by Kirejczyk,

The Hornets first tally came from seemingly nothing as Sean Lanzillo blocked a clearance and quickly fed Charlie Rogers in. Rogers raced to the end line and then centered a cross back where Bouck easily buried it into the back of the net with less than a minute to play in the first half.

It didn’t take long for the Warriors to level the game in the second half, knotting the game at one less than four minutes in. Senior captain Joe Kellett came away with a steal at midfield, took a touch before sending Mann down the left flank. Mann did well with his hold up play, allowing Kellett to come on an overlapping run and he laid it off. Kellett took possession, raced towards the end line and hit a perfect low cross back across the middle and sophomore Mike Rowe slotted it into the corner of the net.

Midway through the second half, the Warriors thought they had earned a penalty kick. Mann took control in his own half and raced nearly 60 yards before being taken down from behind right on the edge of the area. The ref originally seemed to point to the spot for a PK but instead it was placed at the 20 yard line. Kellett’s ensuing free kick was unable to elude the wall and was cleared.

Staples’ goal came with just over 10 minutes to play and neither side was able to register a scoring chance in the remaining time, despite five long throw in opportunities for KP.

“A loss is always a sour taste in your mouth but when you have two good teams that battle it out, and that was one hell of a goal on that second one from Mansfield, it’s kind of hard to walk away and say you didn’t try to earn it,’ King Philip head coach Nick Gale said. “The kids left it all out there. It was a well deserved win on their part. Out of the three games we’ve played them, that was probably the best they’ve played.

“Our objective was to play good soccer and be the better soccer team. That’s the way we’ve been training and the philosophy we’ve followed. We wanted to beat them playing good soccer and I think we came up short. But we worked hard on it.”

KP finishes the season 8-8-3 overall. Mansfield is now 13-3-3 and will advance to the Quarterfinals of the D1 South tournament and will travel to #4 Needham on Sunday. The time is still to be announced.

Heads Up Goal From Nutt Holds Up In OA's Road Win

NORFOLK, Mass. – You see it so often in the game of soccer.
When one player shoots, players on both sides can get caught watching the outcome.
Nearly every one of the field players was guilty of that when Oliver Ames’ Chris Romero ripped a shot from 20 yards out in the 19th minute. The ball clanked off the crossbar, eluding the dive of King Philip goalie Brandon Ziolkowski, and came back into play.
There was one player, however, that wasn’t caught watching. Oliver Ames senior captain Keegan Nutt came running in all alone and headed home the ball off the rebound into an open net to give the Tigers the lead.
That goal would be enough as the Tigers (9-0, 9-0) continued their perfect start with a 1-0 win at King Philip.
“He did a great job,” Oliver Ames head coach John Barata said. “Chris’ shot was awesome and deserved a goal. I’m glad Keegan followed it up and finished because it would have been a shame if we didn’t score there.”
The goal came after Oliver Ames nearly scored the opener a minute earlier. Senior Max Bamford used a long throw in to get the ball into the area and sophomore Mason Galbato got his head to it and flicked it towards the back post but Ziolkowski got his finger tips to the ball and pushed it wide for a corner.
Oliver Ames continued to press in the first half, winning the majority of the duels in the midfield and didn’t let the Warriors get much going offensively.
It wasn’t until the 39th minute that the Warriors were able to register a serious scoring threat. A corner kick floated into the area was met by the head of Tom Lugten but his bid hit off the bar and Paul Kelley’s follow up attempt went over the bar.

Junior Thomas McCormick nearly doubled Oliver Ames’ lead in the first minute of the second half, getting past a defender and getting a shot off at the near post but Ziolkowski was there to meet it once again.
Three minutes later, Ziolkowski was called into action again as a head back from a defender was a little short but before OA could get much on the attempt, Ziolkowski collected for the save.
“He’s improving as the season progressed,” KP head coach Nick Gale said of Ziolkowski. “His soccer IQ has been improving too. He wasn’t the reason why we lost today.”
OA again had a chance from inside the area in the 68th minute. Another long throw Bamford forced Ziolkowski off his line and he punched it clear. The ball eventually fell to Romero, who got a good shot in but Ziolkowski was once again back in position for the save.
The Tigers looked like they had doubled the lead in the 70th minute. A free kick from the right side from about 25 yards out was taken by sophomore Cam Vella. Instead of a service into the area, Vella hit a streaking Matt Campbell all alone to the right of the wall and the sophomore hit a tough angle shot that found the back of the net. But the referee blew the whistle and said the play was offside.
Just a minute later, Vella connected with sophomore Nathaniel Cardoza, who put Romero in on goal alone but a shot from inside the 18 was denied by Ziolkowski’s diving effort and the follow up chance was also saved.
“I think we had a lot of control in the game,” Barata said. “I think we were able to do what we needed to do in the game to get a lot of chances. I think we unfortunately missed 10 or 12 chances inside the 12 (yard box) and that’s a problem that we’ll have to address and fix as we get into the second half of the season.”

Oliver Ames was able to create so many chances because of their play in the midfield. Between the play of Vella and Cardoza in the midfield and the efforts from Campbell, Romero, Galbato and sophomore Matt Alvarado, it was difficult for King Philip to transition from defense to offense. The Tigers have allowed just one gaol in nine games this season.
“I think transitionally we were very good,” Barata said. “Offensively even when we lost the ball we were very good to get back and defend and that’s kind of been our M.O. this year which is why we haven’t given up a lot of goals. I think it’s been our team defense and we’ve had consistent goalkeeping at the moment, Jack has done a great job, and the back line has done a good job.”
“When you’re constantly pressured and they have possession of the ball all the time, it’s very difficult to get into the flow of the game and build momentum,” Gale added. “I think we adjusted a little bit in the second half and hopefully that was on our part and not them sitting back a little bit more. I think we really lost this game in the midfield today. Defensively we held up as strong as we possibly could. Ryan Coulter and Cam Mullins did another phenomenal job back there.”
Oliver Ames will look to get its 10th win of the season on Tuesday when they host Attleboro to open a three game home stand. King Philip (5-6, 4-6) will continue its push for a playoff berth when they travel to Foxboro on Tuesday.

Warriors Set Tone Early in Division Win Over Taunton

NORFOLK, Mass. – King Philip first year head coach Nick Gale strived for continuity through the program’s first six games this season and the team went 3-3.
On Tuesday afternoon, Gale decided to switch it up and it paid off in a big way as the Warriors picked up their biggest win of the season, a 4-0 win over divisional rival Taunton.
“You try to have some continuity in what you do and we’ve kind of kept things the same the last five or six games,” Gale said. “And I thought this would be a good game to switch things up, spice things up.”
KP senior captain Joe Kellett has seen time at center back and in the center midfield but was pushed higher up in a more attacking role against the Tigers. The switch paid off as he put a shot on frame inside the first 30 seconds as the Warriors set their attacking tone early.
“We’ve struggled to score goals so we had to try set a tone early,” Gale said. “Even right off the opening play we wanted to be offensive. I think Joe was a good adjustment up there and he took advantage of his opportunities. You can put him anywhere and he’s going to be a threat.”
Kellett had the first serious scoring chance for the Warriors in the 10th minute. Sophomore Tyler Mann cut a pass back to Clayton Geuss and he centered to Kellett but a sprawling effort from Taunton sophomore goalie Marc DeSousa pushed the shot wide.
But it didn’t take long for the Warriors to create another chance and this one found the back of the net. A short free kick from Taunton in the defensive third turned into turnover when Kellett pressed high and came away with the ball. Kellett took control of possession and found Mann wide open in the middle of the area and the sophomore buried his chance.
Junior Sean Crowley had a chance to level the game for Taunton in the 14th minute. Crowley gathered the ball with his back to goal along the left flank and cut into the middle. He was about to get around his defender and ripped a low shot from outside the 18 but KP goalie Brandon Ziolkowski.
Four minutes later, Mansfield was able to double their lead, this time Mann returning the favor to Kellett. On a corner kick, Mann put his service towards the back post and Kellett came sliding in to connect and find the back of the net.
The Warriors were able to make it 3-0 just over the half hour mark. Will Weir picked up a loss ball and lifted a shot that just went through the finger tips of DeSousa and found the back of the net.
““We set a tone very early,” Gale said. “We wanted to be very offensive today and very direct and we got that result early, which is the first time we’ve really gotten an early lead and held onto it. And I think that really sucks the wind out of your opponent. They challenged a lot, especially in the second half, but we set the tone early and that was awesome.”
Though the three lead felt comfortable heading into the second half, King Philip was able to tack one more on inside the first five minutes of the second half. Taunton was whistled for a foul about 30 yards from its own net. The ref whistled for King Philip to push the ball back and as DeSousa hugged the near post to try and set up a wall, King Philip’s Cam Mullins ripped a shot that floated into the back of the open net. Despite the lack of a restart whistle, the ref allowed the goal to count.
“You can try to set things up [on a free kick] but he’s an offensive minded defender I guess you can say,” Gale said. “He has a nose for goal even as a center back. He took advantage of the open goal and it was a good heads up play.”
Both teams pushed to try and find the back of the net for the rest of the half but neither was able to create a serious scoring threat.
With the win, King Philip improved to 4-3 overall and 4-3 in the division, which puts them in second at the time. The Warriors will be back in action on Friday when they host Franklin. Taunton drops to 1-4-2 overall and in division play and will look to bounce back with a trip to division leading Mansfield.
