Attleboro juniors Ben and Ryan Connors have been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Jan. 30 through Feb. 4. The Connors are the 19th players chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and seventh in the winter season.
The Connors combined to win four individual and two relay titles for the Bombardiers at the annual Hockomock Swim and Dive Championships, held Friday evening at the Milford High natatorium. Attleboro, which won the Kelley-Rex division title with a perfect 5-0 record, took second as a team on Friday, finishing just 19 points behind Davenport division winner Sharon. The Bombardiers compiled 357 points as a team.
“Ben and Ryan are both had amazing swims at Hocks and all their hard work from this season, and the hours they put it during the offseason, has paid off,” said Attleboro head coach Sarah Faulkner. “They were very focused on their races the week leading up to Hocks, and I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome than four perfect races from each of them! They are consistent in the pool and are top points earners for our team.”
It was a fast start for the Connors, and for Attleboro, on Friday. The twins were part of the 200-yard medley relay team (joined by Connor Coleman and Angad Ahluwalia) that took first place, over second-place Sharon, in a time of 1:43.41. Ryan then took first in the 200-yard free in a time of 1:53.21 (nearly seven seconds faster than the second-place swimmer) and Ben grabbed first in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:05.77 (winning by four seconds).
Ryan added a second individual title with a meet record time of 53.13 in the 100-yard butterfly. He won the race by more than four seconds and set a new league meet record. Ben grabbed his second title in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning with a time of 1:03.24 and edging out Taunton’s Gerald Grealish by less than a second. In the final event of the meet, the twins again combined with Coleman and Ahluwalia to win the 400-yard free relay. The team finished in a time of 3:29.36 to win by nearly six seconds.
The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the HockomockSports.com staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
