Black Knights Earn Bragging Rights Against King Philip

STOUGHTON, Mass. – Ever since the Hockomock League split into two divisions, they have crowned a minimum of two division champs in each sport, leaving no true ‘Hockomock champion.’

Because of how the schedules are set, cross-division games aren’t typically at the end of the season and therefore division champs rarely get the chance to face off bragging rights. But due to some postponements, Stoughton and King Philip’s game was pushed to the last weekend of the season, pitting the Davenport division champ against the Kelley-Rex division champ.

With that, there was plenty of bragging rights on the line as the Black Knights hosted the Warriors in a Saturday matinee. And on top of that, Stoughton was looking to snap a two game skid before entering the tournament.

But even with all of that to play for, Stoughton was simply playing for one another, for the team.

“It’s been an emotional day,” Stoughton head coach Mike Armour said. “We actually went to a wake this morning, as a team, for one of our guys who lost his dad. It’s been a long day but this is a tight knit group, this is a family really.

“Just being there for everyone, we said to ourselves, we have a lot of family here, we wanted to pick them up, we wanted to give them something to smile and cheer about and we did. It was awesome to see the guys having fun.”

In the end, the Black Knights walked away with smiles on their faces and the bragging rights with a 8-3 win over KP.

It didn’t take long for the fun to start for Stoughton. Senior Chris McNulty led off the bottom of the second inning with a single and moved to second on an errant pick off attempt. KP starter Jack DiCenso got back to back strikeouts but Stoughton junior Pat Hagerty connected for an RBI double off a 1-1 count to give the Black Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Black Knights continue to roll into the third inning with starter Barry Cooke needing just six pitches to get through four batters in the top of the third and the Black Knights’ offense added two more runs in the bottom half. Doug Seaman drew a one-out walk and stole second base.

Senior Jake Gibb drilled a single into left center and a bobble in the outfield allowed Seaman to round third and come in safely and Gibb to reach second. Jack Connelly followed with a double to bring Gibb home to make it 3-0.

“We lost a couple of hard fought games this past week and if we had gotten a big base hit, we win both of those games,” Armour said after 2-1 losses to Whitman-Hanson and Milford over the past week. “We talked about getting the two-out RBIs, the big hits. Pat Hagerty came through in the second…to come out and get the first run across the plate, that’s usually what we need. We can build off of that. Connelly and Gibb did what they do in the third and we just went from there. It was a total team effort.”

After Cooke got through a two-out single from Ryan Coulter, his second of the day, in the top of the fourth, Stoughton’s offense was back at it in the bottom half. A lead off single from Hagerty caused a pitching change as KP head coach brought in Jake Cavanagh to replace DiCenso. Nick Quattrucci’s sacrifice bunt moved Hagerty up and a bloop single from Ruben Gonzalez put runners on the corners.

A wild pitch brought Hagerty in from third and Gonzalez, who stole second, moved to third. Gibb walked and then the Black Knights executed a double steal with Gibb sprinting to second, drawing a throw, allowing Gonzalez to race home to make it 5-0.

“We preach it and we know it’s key,” Armour said of being active on the bases. “We know King Philip, they are active on the bases too. We talked about that leading up to this, about the base running and being aware of what they like to do. It was nice to see our guys execute running the bases too. It hasn’t been stellar for us this season but now we’re just getting everything in order.”

King Philip was able to breakthrough against Cooke in the top of the fifth but only pulled one run back. Sophomore Patrick Limerick drew a one-out walk, stole second and then came around to score after a pair of walks. Cooke was able to get the third out with a runner on third to limit the damage.

“I thought Barry Cooke pitched his butt off today,” Armour said. “He gave it everything he had right until the end of the fifth inning. And [Justin] Hutchinson, he’s been great for us all year and came in to help us. Tip your hat to King Philip, they fought right to the end.”

Justin Hutchinson retired KP in order in the top of the six and the Black Knights added key insurance runs in the bottom half.

A leadoff triple by Ryan Sullivan turned into a run when Gonzalez reached on an infield error. Seaman singled through the left side and the ball eluded KP’s left fielder, allowing Gonzalez to scamper home from second and Seaman to race to third. He scored Stoughton’s third run of the inning on a passed ball to make it 8-1.

King Philip rallied as Will Weir and DiCenso each had a two-out RBI in the top of the seventh with Ryan Guenette and Jon Rolfe, who both walked, scoring runs. But Hutchinson was able to close the door, ending the Warriors’ rally.

“We didn’t want to enter the tournament on a three game losing streak so we’re happy to get it done here,” Armour said. “Now we’re looking forward to the tournament.”

Cooke got the win, allowing one run in five innings of work. The win gives Stoughton the bragging rights with a head to head victory over KP.

“The kids were aware of it,” Armour said of the bragging rights on the line. “With the two Hock division champs going head to head today, we definitely feel like we made a statement. In the grand scheme of things, we’re just trying to get ready for the tournament. We’ve just been putting the pieces together. We want to be playing our best baseball in the tournament. This group of kids, with what they’ve done and how hard they’ve worked, and the pride they have, I just want to do everything in my power to put them in a position to be successful.”

Stoughton baseball finishes the season with a 14-6 overall record and 13-3 in league play. King Philip finishes 15-5 overall and 11-5 in the league, finishing in a tie with Taunton for the Kelley-Rex crown. Seeds for the MIAA tournament will be released on Tuesday.

Attleboro, 2 @ King Philip, 1 – Final (8 inn.) – Nate Tellier scored both of Attleboro’s runs and tossed seven innings, allowing just one run to help the Bombardiers get a win in extra innings. King Philip took the lead in the fifth inning, with Jake Cavanagh getting hit by a pitch and then scoring on a single from Stephan MacMeans. Tellier reached on a walk in the sixth, stole second, moved to third on grounder and then scored when Will Carter made contact and the throw to home was off the mark. In the eighth inning, Tellier connected for a one out triple – his third triple in as many games – and scored on an RBI single from Pat Collins up the middle. On the mound, Tellier had 13 strikeouts, scattering five hits in seven innings of work. Matt Callahan pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half of the eighth to clinch the win. Jack DiCenso allowed just one hit in 5.1 innings of work, striking out seven.

Canton, 6 @ Milford, 7 – Final – With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Anthony Arcudi connected for his second hit of the game, this one with the bases loaded to score Blake Hill for the game winning run. Hill hit a two-out double and Nick Johnson (HBP) and Marc Fornaciari (walk) loaded the bases. The Scarlet Hawks had 13 hits as a team with Hill (double, triple) and Arcudi leading the way. Chris Speroni, Alex Coady and Zach Tamagni each added a pair of hits for the Scarlet Hawks. Hill got the win on the mound after coming in relief and pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

Stoughton, 13 @ Foxboro, 4 – Final – Jake Gibb reached base five times with three hits, including a double and a home run, walked twice and drove in a team best four runs to pace Stoughton’s offense. Doug Seaman went 2-4 with a pair of doubles, a stolen base, four runs scored and 2 RBI while Pat Hagerty reached four times and scored three times from in the lead-off spot. Nico Parmeggiani got the win on the mound, going four innings, allowing three runs (two earned), scattering six hits with three strikeouts and just two walks. Barry Cooke pitched well in relief, allowing just one run over three innings, striking out three.

Franklin, 0 @ Taunton, 7 – Final – Luke Figueira put in another strong performance for the Tigers on both the mound and at the plate. Figueira tossed six shutout innings, striking out seven while allowing just two hits. At the plate, the senior had three hits and an RBI. Brendon Mazerolle, Christian Simoes and Charles Hearrold III each had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Tigers.

Mansfield, 3 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – The Rocketeers continued the trend of scoring late inning runs, this time getting a walk off win over the Hornets. With the game tied, Brian Poillucci picked up his fourth hit of the game singling in pinch runner Bryan Harris for the winning run. Poillucci gave the Rocketeers the lead in the first, connecting for a two-run home run, scoring Kyle McCarthy. Mansfield tied the game in the fourth inning with two run shot from Mike Arnold, plating freshman Dan Saraceno (single). Aidan Cahill gave the Hornets their first lead in the sixth inning, scoring pinch runner Conor Driscoll but the Rocketeers tied the game in the bottom half when Ridge Olsen scored Brian Poillucci (triple) with a sacrifice fly. Poillucci finished 4-4 with three runs scored. Matt Papineau got the win for the Rocketeers, tossing a complete game with three strikeouts. Jared Menzer threw a complete game for the Hornets, striking out four.

Oliver Ames, 13 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Ryan Adams had a huge day at the plate for the Tigers, driving in five runs on three hits. Josh Minuskin, Chris Romero, Chris Pearsons and Adam Burr all registered a pair of hits for Oliver Ames.

Softball
King Philip, 18 @ Attleboro, 2 – Final (6 inn.) – The Warriors pounded out 21 hits, led by Sydney Phillips’ three run home run and four total hits. Brooke Taute and Kali Magane each had three hits while Christa Wagner (home run), Meghan Gorman, Elise Pereira and Jessica Bonner all had two hits for the Warriors. Pereira got the win, allowing just one hit in four innings of work. Magane finished the game with four strikeouts in two innings of work.

Milford, 12 @ Canton, 1 – Final – Emily Piergustavo was perfect at the plate, going 5-5 with a double, a triple and knocked in a pair of runs. Maggie Farrell was also perfect, going 4-4 with a double and driving in a team-high four RBI and Jill Powers went 2-4 with three RBI and a home run. Kelley Reichert got the win, scattering three hits without giving up a run while striking out four.

Foxboro, 7 @ Stoughton, 6 – Final – Stoughton was led offensively by freshman Jordan Lyons, who went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and improved her season average to .500. Jenni D’Andrea also added a pair of hits for the Black Knights.

Franklin, 0 @ Taunton, 5 – Final – The Tigers were limited to their lowest offensive output of the season but Aimee Kistner was strong in the circle, striking out five while allowing no runs or walks and just four hits in a complete game effort. Kistner was backed by strong defense, including a nice backhanded play by Jaime Brown down the third base line that resulted in a double play and backhand catch from Bailey Clapp in left with two runnings on. Kistner went 2-2 at the play with a triple and two RBI, Brown was 2-3 with a double, triple and run scored, Liana Duarte went 2-4 and Sarah Bagge was 2-3 with a run.

North Attleboro, 3 @ Mansfield, 5 – Final – Freshman Madyson Bendanillo went 3-4 for the Hornets with a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Rachel Carafa also went 2-3 with a pair of RBI for Mansfield, while Maddie Letendre struck out 11 and allowed two earned runs in a complete game win. North Attleboro was led by Jordan Sharpe, who was 2-4 with two RBI, and also got two hits each from Meg Barlow and Gina Miceli. North had seven batters record at least one hit, but left 13 runners on base, including the tying run at first in the seventh.

Sharon, 6 @ Oliver Ames, 11 – Final – Oliver Ames’ offense produced 12 hits to score double-digit runs for the second time this season. Lexie Campbell was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Victoria Ziner was 2-2 with four runs scored and an RBI, Jamie Gottwald was 2-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, Katie Pursley was 2-4 with four RBI and Dalene Gomes was 2-4 with an RBI. OA’s Jordyn Leite and Katie Mills both had a hit for the Tigers as well.

Boys Lacrosse
Oliver Ames, 12 @ Attleboro, 6 – Final – OA senior attack Matt Gilson had three goals, sophomore attack Eric LeBlanc had three goals and three assists and sophomore Owen Gallagher had a pair of goals and one assist for the Tigers. Head coach Chris DiGiacomo said junior Sean Cosgrove was solid in net in his first varsity start.

Franklin, 19 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Senior Trevor Drake scored a pair of goals and had an assist while sophomore Luke Downie scored once and had two assists and sophomore Jonathan O’Glishen scored twice.

Milford, 2 @ Hopedale, 14 – Final

Girls Lacrosse
Attleboro, 13 @ Oliver Ames, 9 – Final – After a high scoring first half that saw the Bombardiers take a 9-7 lead in the halftime break, Attleboro was able to limit the Tigers to just two second half goals. Hannah Lamothe led Attleboro with four goals while Sam Spaziano scored twice and had two assists. Kayla Merritt added two goals and an assist while Kyra Lions scored once and had an assist. Mish Logie added two goals for the Bombardiers while Emily Patton and Meg Dotzenrod each scored once.

Canton, 6 @ Watertown, 16 – Final

Foxboro, 8 @ King Philip, 14 – Final

Taunton, 2 @ Franklin, 20 – Final – Franklin raced out to a big lead by halftime and never looked back. Kenzi Pleshaw scored three goals, including her 100th career goal to pace the Panthers. Senior Dani Lonati scored her first career goal for the Panthers.

Mansfield, 8 @ Medway, 15 – Final

Attleboro, 0 @ King Philip, 5 – Final – Garrett Schneider battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win at first singles to lead the Warriors to a sweep. Justin Rohan won 6-2, 6-4 at second singles and Marco DiStefano won 6-0, 6-2 at third singles. Sam Colella and Jake Webster paired up for a 6-3, 6-3 win at first doubles and Aidan Ignatius and Tim Costanzo stepped in to pick up a 6-1, 6-1 win at second doubles.

Canton @ Milford, 4:00

Stoughton, 0 @ Foxboro, 5 – Final – Foxboro’s Liam Riess won 6-1, 6-3 at first singles, Andre Jaberi won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Matt Tierney picked up 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles. Shawn McNamara and Brandon Wasserman won 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles for the Warriors and Taha Baig and Paul Darcy won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles.

Franklin, 5 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Franklin junior Rahul Herur won 6-1, 6-3 at first singles, junior Eli Brooks won 6-0, 6-2 at second singles and freshman Dan Barrow won 6-0, 6-2 at third singles. Junior James Johnston and senior Tom Mancini won 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles while seniles Cam Piana and Jeremy Gan won 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles.

Mansfield, 1 @ North Attleboro, 4 – Final – The Rocketeers picked up wins at first and third singles and both doubles to get the win. Mitchell Dyer won 6-3, 6-4 at first singles and junior Zack Pfeffer won 6-2, 7-5 at third singles for Big Red. North Attleboro also got wins from seniors Jeff Yao and Nick Lockavitch at first doubles (6-3, 6-0) and senior Jake Fontes and junior Daniel Zhang at second doubles (6-2, 6-3). Mansfield’s win came from freshman Luke Nickerson at second singles (7-5, 6-3).

Milford, 0 @ Canton, 5 – Final – Canton’s Carly Scanlon and Skyler Jabbour won in straight sets to pace the Bulldogs to a win. Scanlon won 6-3, 6-0 at first singles and Jabbour won 6-3, 6-1 at second singles. Jude Aboukhater won 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 at third singles, Tiffany Ha and Sarah MacQuarrie won 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 at first doubles and Talya Mayman and Julia Buskowsky won 7-5, 6-3 at second doubles for Canton.

Foxboro, 7 @ Milford, 3 – Final – Aaron Wentling picked up the win on the mound for the Warriors with four innings of work and Darren Kelly got the save in relief. Wentling and AJ Cavossa each added a pair of hits and two RBI at the plate while sophomore Chad Bearce had a two-out two-RBI hit for the Warriors.

Franklin, 6 @ Mansfield, 14 – Final – Sophomore Tyler Dalton struck out five in five innings of work to earn his first career win. Mansfield’s offense exploded with Kevin Dow and Mike Arnold each going 3-4 with three runs scored, Jake Tryder going 2-3 with two RBI and Tyrone Pascual went 2-3 with an RBI for the Hornets.

King Philip, 6 @ North Attleboro, 5 – Final – King Philip took a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning but had to battle back after the Rocketeers combined for five runs in the first and second innings. Will Weir had a three run home run that scored Stephan MacMeans (single) and Ben Furfari (walk). The Warriors then tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Weir reached after being hit by a pitch and advanced on a single from Jon Rolfe. Both runners advanced on a double steal and Jack DiCenso followed it up with a two-run hit. Ryan Coulter scored the go-ahead run in the sixth after doubling, moving to second on a Ryan Guenette single and coming home on a wild pitch. DiCenso got the win for KP, coming on in relief and tossing 5.2 shutout innings while striking out seven. North Attleboro’s Brian Kleczkowski was 2-4 with an RBI.

Stoughton, 9 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Jack Connelly went 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI and Doug Seaman was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI and to lead the Black Knights’ offense. Justin Hutchinson got the win on the mound for Stoughton, going five innings allowing just one earned run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Barry Cooke pitched two no-hit innings in relief.

Softball
Taunton, 13 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Courtney Fisher didn’t allow a run in six innings of work, walking just a pair and allowing two hits while striking out seven to get the win. Jordan Wade went 3-4 with a double and three RBI to lead the Tigers’ offense. Liana Duarte went 3-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, Meghan Navarro was 2-3 with a double and an RBI and Jaime Brown was 2-4 with a double and a triple and a run batted in.

Foxboro, 2 @ Milford, 14 – Final – Emily Piergustavo and Jess Tomaso each drove in three runs to pace the Scarlet Hawks’ offense. Piergustavo went 3-3 with a double and three runs scored while Tomaso was 3-4 with a home run, a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Maggie Farrell added two hits, including a triple, two RBI and two runs scored while Shannon Cormier had a double and a run scored. Ali Atherton struck out nine in six innings of work, allowing three hits and a pair of runs to get the win.

Franklin, 2 @ Mansfield, 7 – Final – Freshman Mady Bendanillo had a career day, connecting on a pair of home runs to lead the Hornets. Bendanillo hit a solo home run in the first inning and then connected for her first career grand slam in the second inning. The tandem of pitcher Maddie Letendre and catcher Bri Homer limited the Panthers at the plate. Letendre struck out six in a complete game while Homer played great behind the plate according to head coach Lori Letendre. Maddie Letendre helped her cause at the plate, going 2-3, while Megan Letendre, Kara Bendanillo, Rachel Carafa, Homer and Liz Mackin all had hits. For Franklin, Ally Shea went 2-4 with a run scored, Clara DeCarvalho was 2-4 and Alyssa Dasilva had a pair of RBIs in the top of the seventh.

North Attleboro, 2 @ King Philip, 11 – Final – Kali Magane went the distance for the Warriors, allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out 13 and walking none for the win. Offensively, KP had 12 hits with Christa Wagner and Haley McCasland paving the way. Wagner scored three runs while McCasland knocked in three runs. For North Attleboro, Mycala Moody had a double and scored two runs while Liz Morehouse added a single and an RBI.

Sharon, 0 @ Stoughton, 4 – Final – Shannon Flaherty struck out 11 in a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and issuing just two walks to get the win. Karly Estremera had three singles and scored a run for the Black Knights while Brianna Ferrandiz knocked in a pair of runs for Stoughton.

Boys Lacrosse
Foxboro, 9 vs. Barnstable, 5 – Final

Franklin, 7 @ Cohasset, 8 – Final – Senior Austin Kent and sophomore Eric Civetti both scored a hat trick and registered an assist for the Panthers. Head coach Lou Verrochi said Sophomore Connor O’Rourke was superb in goal with nine saves.

King Philip, 6 vs. Bishop Feehan, 8 – Final – Sam Agricola scored five goals for the Warriors and assisted on the sixth but King Philip couldn’t overcome Feehan. Freshman Colin DeVellis scored his first career goal for King Philip.

Mansfield, 8 @ North Attleboro, 5 – Final – Billy Grant scored a hat trick to lead the Hornets, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half. Jon Reed added a pair of goals and Ryan Smith and Hunter Ferreira each had one. North was led by Colin Young and Zack McGowan each with two goals, while Nick Ward added one.

Oliver Ames, 10 @ Milford, 4 – Final – Senior Matt Gilson notched a hat trick in the game, putting him at 104 career points.

Sharon, 7 @ Norwell, 15 – Final

Taunton, 4 @ New Bedford, 5 – Final – Freshman Griffin Speicher led Taunton with a pair of goals while Andrew Wellington and Josh Grasso each scored once. Josh Grasso, Nick Croft, Mike Perrotta and Cam Welby each recorded assists. Ryan Williams made seven saves in net for the Tigers.

Girls Lacrosse
Foxboro, 14 vs. Hingham, 7 – Final

North Attleboro, 20 @ Mansfield, 7 – Final – Hana Caster was the top scorer for the Rocketeers with seven goals.

Milford, 8 @ Oliver Ames, 22 – Final – Erin Fitzgerald found the back of the net four times, adding a pair of assists to lead OA. Sam Lang scored four goals and also added an assist in the win. Ariana Waldorf made 17 saves and head coach Craig Gardner said Waldorf was “stellar” in net. Kendall Clifford (three goals, three assists), Sofia Masciarelli (three goals, one assist) and Abby Duvall (three goals) helped contribute to Milford’s offense.

Taunton, 5 vs. New Bedford, 8 – Final

Boys Tennis
Attleboro, 2 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – Wins at first and third singles as well as first doubles led the Tigers to a win. Freshman Brett Beaulieu won 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 at first singles and Mike Briggs won 6-2, 6-2 at second singles. The team of Connor Briggs and Charlie Fiske won 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles to secure the win. Attleboro’s Tyler Letendre won 7-6, 6-4 at second singles and Khaled Hantash and Ahijah Joseph won 6-2, 6-3 at second doubles.

Foxboro, 5 @ Milford, 0 – Final

Mansfield, 1 @ Franklin, 4 – Final – Franklin won at second and third singles as well as first and second doubles to get the win. Junior Eli Brooks won 6-0, 6-3 at second singles and Tom Mancini won 6-0, 6-1 at third singles. James Johnston and Cam Piana won 6-0, 6-2 at first doubles and the team of Jeremy Gran and Dan Barrow won 6-0, 6-2 at second doubles.

CANTON

2015 Record: 11-11
2015 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round
Coach: JP Scott

The Bulldogs graduated a handful of key pieces from last year’s team that reached the playoffs but they also return plenty of experienced players and hope to reach the playoffs again.

“The expectation for us is to have a successful season and make a run for a small Hock title,” Canton head coach JP Scott said. “But our main goal of the season will be to make it back to the state tournament like we did in 2015.”

Canton has 11 seniors on the roster this season led by captains Griffin Jerrier and Joe Peccia. Jerrier has plenty of experience on the bump while Peccia was second on the team last year with a .393 batting average. The Bulldogs also have their top batter back in Kevin Powers, who batted over .400 last year and drove in 15 runs in the season. Powers was also one of Canton’s top pitchers after logging over 40 innings in 2015.

Scott also brings back Jim Jenkins, Mike McMahon, Sean Doyle and Joe Bires, all which have starting experience. Junior Jackson Maffeo, fresh off a tremendous season on the ice, is expected to contribute in his first season on varsity.

FOXBORO

2015 Record: 4-16
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Chris Sullivan

After just four wins last year, the Warriors look poised to improve on that this year. Foxboro graduated just two seniors year last and have seven starters back for 2016.

“This is the hardest working and most dedicated group that has come through the school since I graduated in 2002,” head coach Chris Sullivan said. “We have a ton of guys who worked hard in the weight room, in the cages, and by playing competitive summer baseball this past offseason.”

Justin Garcia will lead a strong group of experienced pitchers. Garcia had a 1.54 ERA last season, striking out nearly 50 batters to rank near the top of the league. Colin Thoener, Darren Kelly and Aaron Wentling will also all see time on the mound this season.

Chad Bearce will likely handle first base while Garcia is on the mound while Darren Kelly and John Cronin will see time up the middle. Thoener will show off his defensive prowess at third and senior Nick Wright will return for his third season patrolling centerfield for Foxboro. AJ Cavossa, AJ Bubencik and Cam Feldman will all split the other outfield time and Jesse Galanti is back behind the plate for the third consecutive season.

MILFORD

2015 Record: 11-10
2015 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round
Coach: Paul Pellegrini

After just getting into the postseason last year, Milford has key pieces back in key positions to try and keep their playoff streak alive.

“This team is a very athletic team with lots of versatility,” head coach Paul Pellegrini said. “If we put everything together, which I believe we will, we should be fun to watch. We will definitely be very competitive and strong team all around.”

One big reason that Milford has a shot at getting back there is sophomore Aidan Wilde, who led the league as a freshman in batting last year. He hit had 36 hits and hit .537 with 21 RBI and was selected as the HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year. Junior Blake Hill has batted .360 over the past two years and will also be a key part of the Scarlet Hawks pitching staff.

Junior Alex Macek will be one of the more experienced pitchers in the Davenport and will be relied upon as Milford tries to replace Griffin Lynch and Alex Croteau. Brian Ireland, who also is the starting third baseman, will also get innings for Milford this season.

OLIVER AMES

2016 Record: 15-7
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South Quarterfinal

Losing arguably the two top players in the league will be tough for Oliver Ames but the Tigers have been the class of the league in recent years and have reloaded year after year.

Oliver Ames has won six straight league titles but this season might be the biggest challenge. Hockomock MVP and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Brendan Welch is off at SNHU now and Mike Ferrara, who set the single season hit record for the Tigers, is out at Worcester State.

However, Leo Duggan has infielder Chris Romero back to lead OA after batting .474 last year, good for fourth in the league. Romero gets it done at the plate, in the field and on the bases – stealing 18 bases last year. Romero will be joined by Josh Minuskin, who saw time all over the field last year and will settle in behind the plate in 2016.

Ryan Adams will be another key piece, playing in 18 games last year and batting .404 with 10 RBI. Sophomore Matt Muir also returns after a standout freshman year. Sam Burr, Kevin Geary, Mitchell Goulet and Nick Zwerle should all see some innings on the mound this season.

Sharon

2015 Record: 6-14
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Kee Arguimbau

For the first time in nearly a half a century, there will be a new head coach for the Sharon Eagles baseball team. After 44 years at the helm, Joel Peckham retired after last season and assistant Kee Arguimbau has taken the reigns.

Senior Isaac Miley will be a leader that Arguimbau will rely on all over the place. He’s been on varsity since his sophomore year and is returns as the starting shortstop this season and will be one of the program’s top pitchers.

Senior Mark Botaish will also see a lot of time on the mound and will man third base when he’s not pitching. Arguimbau noted Botaish’s strong junior season and is hoping that will be built on this year. Andrew Filipkowski is back in the outfield for his third season and will be relied upon to get the offense started from the leadoff spot.

Junior Jake Marglous is back at catcher again this season and classmate Aiden Arnold is back to man first base. Arnold was also one of the Eagles’ top hitters last season and will help pace the offense this year. Arguimbau also expect contributions from Rob Bayha, Mike Dumont, Jordan Chabot, Ryan Crooks and Spencer Singer.

Stoughton

2015 Record: 9-11
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Mike Armour

The Black Knights came up just short of the postseason last year but return a strong core and are poised to punch their ticket to the playoffs in 2016.

“With a mix of experience and youth, we are looking to field a competitive team this season that should be able to compete with anybody,” head coach Mike Armour said.

Jake Gibbs has been one of the top players in the league the last two seasons and will look to do the same during his senior year behind the plate. Junior Ryan Sullivan showed a lot on the mound last season and will see a lot of innings along with juniors Justin Hutchinson and Nico Parmeggiani and senior Barry Cooke.

Armour is looking for Doug Seaman to take on an expanded role during his senior season after being limited to just hitting last season. Junior Jack Connelly will man first base for the Black Knights while Joe Piana will see time at third base. Expect Chris McNulty, Nick Quattrucci, Matt Gallagher, Luke Johnson, Michael Batte to all see time in the field while Jared Maher will log some innings on the mound.

King Philip Cashes In At Right Times Against Stoughton

BROCKTON, Mass. – King Philip scored at all the right times and skated away with a 6-1 win over Stoughton at Asiaf Arena on Saturday afternoon.
With the game tied 1-1 in the first period, King Philip scored the all important go ahead goal with less than four minutes to play in the opening frame, then created a two goal cushion less than six minutes into the second and iced the game with three third period goals.
“I think we were outplaying them to start and they got a flukey goal but we rebounded and got the next one,” King Philip head coach Paul Carlow said. “And then we got out of the period with the lead. I thought we outplayed them in the second period even though the score didn’t really show it. In the third we were able to put it away.”
The Black Knights went ahead less than five minutes into the game, converting on a loose puck in front. After the net came dislodged, Stoughton had an offensive zone face off. The puck went behind the net and was deflected by Adam Potter right out in front where senior Barry Cooke backhanded it in with 10:43 left in the first.
King Philip responded just four minutes later, converting on the power play. With just six seconds remaining on the man advantage, Kyle McCarthy ripped a shot that was deflected by Matt Smith right in front to tie the game with 6:45 left in the first. The Warriors then took the lead for good when Jacob Kelly scored off assists from Matt Smith and Sam Ross. After giving up the opening goal, KP held a 2-1 advantage at the first intermission.
The next goal would be an important one and it came from Clay Geuss just over five minutes into the period. The senior took a pass from fellow defenseman Cory Lombardo and stepped into a shot that took a deflection off a Stoughton player and found the back of the net to make it 3-1.
“We played a pretty good first but we just needed to continue with that approach and keep getting pucks on net,” Carlow said. “We ended up getting that big goal in the second. Overall I thought the guys played well. We had guys coming back from injuries, some others that are sick so thing were different but all in all I was pleased with the effort.”
Just 30 seconds after KP’s goal, Stoughton thought they had pulled within one but the goal was waved off due to the net being off. The Warriors outshot the Black Knights 14-4 in the period but Stoughton freshman goalie AJ Scott made 13 of his 40 saves in the period.
King Philip made sure to add another insurance goal early in the final period. Just 27 seconds in, McCarthy ripped a shot from just inside the blue line that went wide but took a big bounce off the boards and came back and bounced in off a Stoughton player and in.
Jeremy Smith then took a pass from brother Matt Smith and Ross and ripped a slap shot upstairs from just inside the blue line to make it 5-1. McCarthy grabbed his second of the game with just over a minute left, weaving through two defensemen and finishing with a wrist shot.
The Warriors had four goals from defenseman.
“We talked to the defense about maybe taking something off of it a little and making sure its getting through or taking a peak and making sure there’s a lane to get the puck through,” Carlow said. “Stoughton did a good job in the beginning of getting in the lanes and I think our D adjusted a little bit and we got pucks to the net.”
Shane Frommer made 16 saves for the win in goal for KP.
King Philip improves to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in Hockomock League play. The Warriors will try to make it two in a row when they travel to Taunton on Wednesday at 6:00. Stoughton (2-5-3, 0-3) will play host to Canton on Tuesday night at 7:30.

Natick Tournament – Milford placed third among 13 teams with 176 points. Carlos Terrinha was second at 113, Brett Kimball was second at 132, Ryan Gray was second at 182, Nick Johnson was second at 195, Nick Marcolini placed third at 106, Eliel Mares was third at 138, Ryan Nesta was fourth at 160, John Niro placed fourth at 285 and Jason Pinto was sixth at 126.
Whitman-Hanson Tournament – North Attleboro won the 16-team tournament with 14 of their 17 wrestlers earning medals. 
Sandwich Quad – Oliver Ames went 2-1 on the day, picking up a 48-30 win over Sandwich and a 49-21 win over Melrose but suffered a 53-9 loss to Hingham. Liston Funai (132) went 2-0 on the day with a pair of pins and Pat Mills (22) was 3-0 with three pins for the Tigers. 
Taunton @ Quincy – Taunton picked up two wins from Justin Bradley (126), Alex Simon (170) and Santiago Lopez (220). Three other Tigers picked up one win on the day: Cooper Moreton (106), Josh Grasso (126) and Hannah Driscoll (160). Taunton lost to Walpole (15-60) and Quincy (30-54).

King Philip, 40 vs. Taunton, 60 – Final – Taunton’s Jill Purtell was first in the 55M hurdles at 9.65 and in the long jump at 16-10.25, Sam Tichelaar got the win in the 55M dash at 7.85, Leishnaly Rosado came in first in the 300M at 45.74, Samantha Grundy was tops at the 1000M at 3:20.89 and junior Amanda Baptiste (12:52.78) and eighth grader Tatyana Mainer-Smith (12:55.76) came in first and second respectively in the 2 Mile. King Philip’s Lucy Hamilton got a first place finish in the 600M at 1:46.91, Sarah Butts won the 1 Mile at 6:19.45, Emily Cote was first in the shot put at 27-07.50 and Abigail Mckeown finished first in the high jump at 4-09.00.

Mansfield, 46 vs. North Attleboro, 54 – Final – In the tightest meet of the day, North Attleboro was led by a first place finish in the 2 Mile by Ann Roberts (league best 12:06.23), a win at the shot put from freshman Julia Mechlinski (30-06.50), a first place finish from senior Nicole Boulanger (tied league best 4-11.00), and a first place finish from Isabelle Renzi in the long jump at 16-10.25. Mansfield’s Lauren Waters had a league best finish at 7.58 in the 55M dash, Kelly Crawford had a league best time of 42.41 in the 300M, Rachel Stier had a first place finish in the 600M at 1:46.96, Caitlin Whitman finished first in the 1000M at 3:17.00, Emma Oldow had a first place finish the the 1 Mile at 5:56.08 and Alicyn McHugh finished first in the 55M hurdles at 10.45.

Milford, 33 vs. Oliver Ames, 67 – Final – Sophomore Elizabeth Nuss got the win for the Tigers in the 55M dash at 8.11, Lauren Wright came in first in the 600M at 1:44.62, junior Dana Lowney, junior Jessica Robarge and senior Erin Fitzgerald finished 1-2-3 in the 1000M, Gabby Eldridge was first in the 55M with a league-best time of 9.47, Chi-Chi Akanegbu was first in the shot put at 35-10.50 (league best) and Comfort Udo came in first in the high jump at 4-09.00. Milford’s Gabby O’Neil was first in the 300M race at 46.42, Jenise Madden (5:50.23) was first in the 1 Mile, Gabriela Chong (12:41.61) was first in the 2 Mile and Christina Speliakos was first in the long jump at 15-11.00.
