Bulldogs Drop Five-Set Heartbreaker in Central Final

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Momentum is a key to any high school volleyball match. Teams build up confidence and go on scoring runs, which is amplified when that run closes out a critical fourth set and keeps a season alive.

Groton-Dunstable went on that type of run in the Div. 2 Central final on Saturday afternoon at Wellesley High, winning nine of the last 11 points to pull out the fourth set 25-19 and force a decisive final set. The momentum from that run to keep the season alive, helped the Crusaders take control of the fifth and deny Canton its first sectional title since 2012.

The Crusaders won the fifth set 15-7, including eight of the last nine points, to beat the Bulldogs 3-2 (20-25, 25-14, 16-25, 25-19, 15-7) and claim the Central title.

“It’s a game of momentum, but unfortunately in the end they had the momentum,” said Canton coach Pat Cawley. “They did carry it over [from the fourth set] and we didn’t have an answer for it. We played a little tight on serve-receive…we didn’t get our offense going at all.”

Canton got off to a strong start to the match in a back-and-forth opening set. Despite dealing with the strong hitting and blocking abilities of Crusaders star Lily Blodgett, the Bulldogs were able to get into a groove with Taylor Harris and Theresa O’Brien on the outside. The five-point edge that Canton ended the set with was the largest lead for either team in the first.

Groton-Dunstable answered right back with a dominant second set. Blodgett was in total control and had the Bulldogs out of sorts at the start, particularly middle hitter Erin Devine, who had a couple of hits blocked in the first and had to be creative to get good looks.

“She (Blodgett) blocked her a lot, but I was proud of Erin because she scored a lot of points in different ways,” Cawley said.

Devine and the Bulldogs bounced right back in the third and had their strongest set of the match. Devine got things started with a kill and then Harris added two on the outside, as Canton jumped in front 10-2. After the Crusaders cut the lead to five points, Harris again found a hole in the G-D defense for a big points and a 12-6 lead.

Everything seemed to be working for the Bulldogs in the third. Olivia Chinsen and libero Megan McDonough each had an ace, Rose Hazam came off the bench and was able to scramble a ball over the net that dropped in for a point, Bailey Shea had a kill in the middle, and Liz Bickett snagged a point for Canton as well.

The fourth set was also back-and-forth, as the two teams were within no more than three points of each other until the final stretch. Groton-Dunstable built an early 6-3 lead, but Canton answered right back with kills from Shea and Harris. Harris also earned a point with a block and setter Nicole Brown (who Cawley called the “glue of the team”) stepped up to the net for a block that made it 11-10.

With the score tied at 16-16, the Bulldogs won the type of point that had its fans thinking the trophy was heading to Canton. After a long rally between the teams, Harris managed to dig a tough hit, Brown hustled to keep the play alive and then McDonough not only bumped the ball back across the net from outside the court but also saw it drop in for the point and the lead.

G-D looked unfazed, winning the next three points to regain the advantage and force a Canton timeout. The set was closed out on back-to-back aces by Crusaders libero Peter White, who was a defensive stalwart for the Groton-Dunstable back line.

“Obviously, they didn’t let the ball fall on their side, so they could run their offense,” Cawley explained. “Their defense was better than just about any we faced this season.”

The fifth and deciding set started out even, with the teams trading the first six points. After a pair of Crusaders kills, Harris stepped up and found space down the line to make it 5-4. Carolyn Mullins, who stepped up in the middle when Blodgett was on the bench, had a kill and a block to extend the lead.

A kill from Shea and a mishit got Canton back within one and gave the Bulldogs hope that they could turn things around, but three straight points, including a pair of aces from White, put the Crusaders in the driver’s seat.

“We hung in their in the first half of the fifth set and then we had some trouble with serve-receive and we just couldn’t get out of it,” said Cawley.

Canton’s struggles with serve-receive continued down the stretch as the Crusaders won two more service points before Blodgett put an exclamation point on her night with one final kill to seal the championship.

“I couldn’t be prouder of my team tonight,” Cawley said. “None of them had played in the tournament before. This was the first time for every single one of them. Their growth from last year to this year has been amazing.”

For Canton (19-3), this was an impressive bounce back year. The Bulldogs regained their spot atop the Davenport division and reached the sectional final through a complete team effort.

Cawley said, “It was big growth in their confidence level as well as their skill level. They put all out there and it just didn’t go our way.”

She added, “I carried 18 kids on my team and I can honestly say for the first time ever all 18 of them I could put in there and feel confident. Every day someone new stepped up.”

Canton Rallies Past Medway To Advance To Central Final

MEDWAY, Mass. – Throughout the 2018 season, Canton senior Erin Devine and junior Taylor Harris have taken turns as the Bulldogs go-to option on offense.

In fact, in 18 of the 20 matches played prior to Wednesday night’s D2 Central semifinal matchup with #5 Medway, either Devine or Harris led Canton in kills.

But this time around, both players had it going offensively for the top-seeded Bulldogs, each recording double-digit kills to pace Canton to a 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-9) win over the Mustangs.

“Both Erin and Taylor had super games,” said Canton head coach Pat Cawley. “We really haven’t had a day like that this year, it’s usually either Erin or Taylor. But tonight they both were on.”

Devine had a team-high 16 kills (with just two hitting errors) and added seven blocks while Harris added 15 kills, 12 digs, and four blocks. It’s just the second time this season that both players reached double-digit kills in the same match.

Even though Canton was the top-seed, the match took place at Medway High, which was a predetermined site by the MIAA. However, it wasn’t selected as the location until the semifinalists were set.

“They worked really hard on not letting the crowd get in their head,” Cawley said. “You have to beat the best to be the best, we’re going to be on the road from now on anyways. Granted we won’t be in someone else’s home gym, but we’ll still be on the road. And if you want to win it all, you have to be good on the road.” g

While both players had strong games offensively, the key to the game came down to matchups. After the Mustangs took the first set, Cawley did her best to figure out how to get Devine matched up with Medway star Maegan Hladick, who had eight kills in the first game alone.

Canton actually had a strong start to the first game, jumping out to a 6-2 lead but Medway worked its way back into the match and rattled off a 10-3 run to take a 12-9 lead. The Bulldogs responded with some strong play, including a couple of nice serves from Megan McDonough (12 digs), and took a 20-16 lead.

But after a Medway timeout, the Mustangs won five of the next six points to tie the first set 21-21. Despite a timeout from Canton, Medway won the next four points, including a pair of kills from Hladick, to secure a 25-21 victory to go up 1-0.

Cawley elected to try and get Devine and senior Bailey Shea on the opposite side of the net to try and get a block on Hladick.

“We didn’t change after the first game but we matched up better because they changed their rotation,” Cawley said. “When they started with the serve, they changed it and it was a better matchup for us. Going into the third, I had a feeling he was going to switch his rotation so I moved mine and luckily we matched up. We were lucky with the rotation, it’s a lot of guess work.

“We were trying to get Erin and Bailey, our two best blockers, to line up with [Hladick]. Because she plays the outside, she’s not blocking Erin so I wasn’t really too concerned who was blocking Erin, I just wanted to block [Hladick].”

The matchup change worked well for the Bulldogs, as Hladick finished with just four kills in the second set. While Canton led for the majority of the match — going up 12-6 after a big kill from Devine, and 16-10 off the hand of Devine again — Medway continued to battle back.

The Mustangs got within three 18-15, and then notched four straight points to go up 19-18 to force another Bulldog timeout. Canton came out with renewed energy, but the Bulldogs trailed 22-21. Devine landed a kill to tie it, a strong serve from Julia Minichiello resulted in a 23-22 lead, and Devine landed a big block on Hladick for a 24-22 lead. Medway got within one but saw its final hit go into the net with Devine and Shea ready for the block.

The third set was close throughout, with nine ties in the first 26 points, the last coming at 13-13. But Devine landed a kill and blocked an attack, and Harris landed back-to-back kills for a 17-13 lead. Canton kept the lead the rest of the way, but Medway did get close at 19-18, but before the Mustangs could tie it, Cawley called a timeout.

“I just reminded them that we have the lead and we have to play like we have the lead,” Cawley said. “We have to play aggressive and strong, and to their credit they did it. It was such a back and forth match. We battled so hard last year, we had a rough year but they stuck together and they deserved this. They gained a lot of confidence by sticking together. We’re really a team.”

Coming out of the timeout, Canton won six of the final seven points, getting a kill and an ace from Harris in the span to win 25-19 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

“We need that second option if we’re going to win,” Cawley said. “Taylor hits the ball the hardest, she’s just trying to find her groove and keep it in play while still being aggressive. She’s working really hard on it, and she’s also a really good defensive player. She plays all six spots for her, she’s upped her game for us. She played well against Holliston too so I think she plays well under pressure.”

The momentum from the win in the third set carried over into the fourth set. Devine landed a kill and had a block, Shea, Rose Hazam, and Nicole Brown (28 assists, 11 digs, six kills) all had a kill, and Harris added two kills as Canton raced out to a 12-2 lead.

The strong beginning was all Canton needed as the Bulldogs went on to win the fourth set 25-9 to secure a 3-1 victory.

Canton volleyball (19-2) advances to the D2 Central Final and will play the winner of #2 Groton-Dunstable (18-2) and Westboro (17-3) on Saturday at Wellesley with a time to be determined. It marks the fifth time in the last seven years that Canton has reached the sectional final.

Franklin, 4 @ Taunton, 2 – Final – Taunton took a 2-0 lead in the first half but Franklin rallied for a pair of late goals to knot the game by halftime and then scored twice in the second half to beat the Tigers. Hannah Blackwell (from Alana Tavares) opened the scoring for Taunton in the third minute and Kathryn Robinson (from Jillian Pagliuca) made it 2-0 in the 24th minute. Franklin’s Victoria Quinn scored twice in the final six minutes of the first half, the first unassisted in the 27th minute and the second set up by Amanda Lewandowski in the 29th minute. In the second half, Cassi Ronan put Franklin up 3-2 on a penalty stroke and Regan Paterson (from Quinn) iced the game with a goal in the final minute. Taunton goalie Emma Sheehan had 14 saves while Franklin goalie Christina Luccini made six stops.

King Philip, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – King Philip went on the road and notched a 3-0 sweep (25-7, 25-7, 25-16) over Attleboro. Catherine Waldeck (seven kills) and Nicole Coughlan (four kills) paced the Warrior offense while Livvie Atkins chipped in with four aces, three digs, and 15 service points.

Sharon, 1 @ Canton, 3 – Final – It took four sets but Canton earned at least a share of the Davenport division title with a 3-1 (25-12, 25-15, 9-25, 25-8) win over Sharon. Canton head coach Pat Cawley said all ten of her seniors played very wel. Rose Hazam, Theresa O’Brien, and Nyah Claiborne combined for 17 kills, Ally Irons and Bella Touzos combined for 15 digs, and Bailey Shea finished with five kills and two blocks.

Stoughton, 3 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final

Franklin, 3 @ Taunton, 0 – Final – Franklin continued its strong season with a dominant performance on the road, beating Taunton, 3-0 (25-11, 25-77, 25-9). Peyton Arone had a team-high six kills while Ellie Wisniewski (six aces) and Emma Chase each had five kills. Lauren McGrath finished with 23 assists and four aces.

Milford, 1 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final – After splitting the first two sets, North Attleboro rattled off two straight wins to beat Milford, 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-13, 25-11). For the Rocketeers, Hayley Gaskin had 26 assists and Tatiana Sotelo added 10 aces and 10 kills. Sotelo rattled off a dozen straight service points in the final set to help Big Red clinch the win. North head coach Kim Hallahan said sophomore Joanna Collins-Bilyeu had a great offensive and defensive game for the Rocketeers.

Mansfield, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – Oliver Ames continued to add to its win total sweeping Mansfield 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-15) to earn its 12th victory of the year. Sadie Homer paced OA defensively with 35 digs, Grace McCallum added 12 digs, Sarah Litwack finished with 10 assists and for aces, and Allie Kemp totaled 15 assists and three aces. For Mansfield, Olivia McGrath had seven kills, Greenly Kelly added six kills, and Abby Sullivan finished with service points

Golf
Canton, 165 @ Stoughton, 175 – Final – Canton clinched the Davenport title outright with a win on the road at Easton Country Club. Tommy Dimock earned medalist honors for the Bulldogs, shooting a low-round of 37. Chris Lavoie added a 41, Mike Gobbi shot a 43, and Ryan Nolte contributed with a round of 44. Stoughton’s Luke Bainton and Josh Hough led the Black Knights with a 41.

Mansfield, 181 @ Sharon, 166 – Final – Corey Carter and Nathan Daley had strong showings as the Eagles picked up a nice win heading into Hock Championships on Thursday. Carter shot 39 and Daley shot 40 to pace Sharon while Ryan Dow had a team-low round of 42 for Mansfield.

Oliver Ames, 2 @ Canton, 2 – Final – Canton scored a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes but Oliver Ames responded with a pair of second half goals to earn a point on the road. Senior Griffin Roach scored a pair of early goals to put the hosts ahead, a lead that Canton took into halftime. But Oliver Ames struck for a pair of goals inside a five minute span to level the scoring. Sophomore Kevin Louhis brought the visitors within one on an assist from sophomore Colin Milliken in the 59th minute, and two minutes later, Milliken tied the game off a feed from Haendel Louhis.

Taunton, 1 @ Stoughton, 1 – Final – Stoughton junior Mason Eschleman scored his first career goal in the final five minutes to hepl the Black Knights earn a point against visiting Taunton. Eschleman finished off a centering pass from John Ortiz with just three minutes to play to bring Stoughton level. Taunton took the lead in the 10th minute when Mateusz Hagemajer converted a pass from Dylan Kullas. Stoughton sophomore Nolan Gerome made 22 saves in net while Taunton keeper Nolan Melo made 13 stops.

Canton, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final – Oliver Ames used a first half goal to earn a 1-0 win over visiting Canton, clinching a spot in the state tournament. Daniella Ferrini scored off a rebound of Erin Holmberg’s shot to put the Tigers ahead. Emma O’Donnell recorded the shutout in net for Oliver Ames.

Stoughton, 1 @ Taunton, 2 – Final – Alex Wapenski scored a pair of goals to help the Tigers edge Stoughton. Stoughton’s goal was scored by Cintia Khouzami, assisted by Mackenzie Manning. Nicole Weir and Nikki Anderson both had strong games on defense for the Knights.

Field Hockey
Attleboro, 6 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Attleboro went on the road and recorded a convincing victory, beating Milford 6-0. Alex Compton paced the Bombardiers’ offense, netting a hat trick while Anna Beck, Hannah Webster, and Takara Keele each scored once in the win.

Oliver Ames, 0 @ Canton, 1 – Final – Click here for a photo gallery from the game – Maggie Connolly followed up a Meg Aldrich shot that OA goalie Kara Ostrander saved and knocked in the rebound to lift Canton to the victory. The Bulldogs created a number of chances to try and put the game away in the second half but Ostrander made a series of saves to keep the Tigers in it. Sophomore Riley O’Connor earned the shutout for Canton.

King Philip, 0 @ Foxboro, 1 – Final – Foxboro senior Sophia Lowe scored late in the first half as the host Warriors handed King Philip its first loss of the season. Lowe converted with 4:15 left in the first half to give Foxboro the lead. King Philip had over 20 shots on goal but Foxboro keeper Julia Carangelo had a strong game, recording the shutout.

Franklin, 7 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Franklin raced out to a 4-0 lead at halftime and never looked back in a win against Sharon. Cassi Ronan and Stephanie Bell each scored a pair of goals to pace the Panthers’ offense, Amanda Lewandowski and Victoria Quinn each had a goal and an assist in the win, and Olivia Rondeau (first career goal) and Katie O’Rourke (assist) each had one point apiece.

Mansfield, 4 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final

Taunton, 2 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – After the majority of the game went without any scoring, Taunton tacked on two goals late in the second half to grab two points on the road in a win over Stoughton. Kathryn Robinson (assisted by Jillian Pagliuca) and Cierra Bartel (assisted by Kennedy Thielker) each scored once for the Tigers.

Oliver Ames, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton defended home court with a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-15, 25-17) of visiting Oliver Ames. Taylor Harris had eight kills, one block, and 13 digs, Olivia Chinsen had a solid night with two aces, three kills, and 10 digs, and Erin Devine and Bailey Shea both had solid games at the net, combining for seven blocks and eight kills. Nicole Brown continued to run the court with 17 assists and five kills for the Bulldogs. Oliver Ames’ Jordan Bosse had 12 kills, eight digs and three aces, Sadie Homer finished with 32 dig, and Allie Kemp added 24 assists.

King Philip, 3 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final – King Philip’s Catherine Waldeck and Nicole Coughlan had strong performances at the net while Jessie Kornfeld and Kristen Masse were strong at the service line, helping the visiting Warriors knock off Foxboro (25-15, 25-5, 25-22). Coughlan had a team-high 12 kills while Waldeck added nine to pace the offense. Kornfeld finished with 10 service points, including four aces while Masse had 11 service points, one ace, and three kills.

Mansfield, 2 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final – After splitting the first four sets, North Attleboro earned the win with a 15-5 win in the fifth set, taking the match 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-5). For Mansfield, Greenly Kelly had 11 kills and three blocks and Sam Sternberg added 19 digs and 15 service points.

Taunton, 0 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Stoughton swept Taunton (25-22, 25-23, 25-16) in a close match, earning its ninth win of the season and clinching a spot in the state tournament. The Black Knights got contributions from the entire line up with Amaya Morris having a strong two-way game, recording six kills and five blocks.

Starovoytov beat Proulx by just one second, both runners nearly a minute ahead of the rest of the pack. Sharon’s Jacob Dubin rounded out the top three.

KP’s Mike Nordberg was second overall while Jason Windvogel, Patrick Heavey, and Paxton Howard were Mansfield’s top three runners.

After splitting the top four spots, with KP taking third and fourth, the race came down to the next two spots, which Mansfield took both of.

Sharon, 154 @ Canton, 149 – Final – Canton picked up an important win over division rival Sharon with junior Chris Lavoie leading the way. Lavoie carded a team-low round of 34 to pace the Bulldogs. Tommy Dimock (37) and Thomas Singleton (38) both had sub-40 rounds while Conor Hunter carded an even 40 for Canton. Sharon’s Corey Carter had one of the best rounds of any Hock golfers this season, earning match medalist honors with a 33. Ethan Skelly was also impressive, shooting a 34 for the Eagles.

Foxboro, 177 @ Franklin, 166 – Final – Franklin’s Matt D’Errico earned match medalist honors after shooting a 40. Jack Paterson (41), Jake Blaney (42), and Gerard Collins (43) all scored for the Panthers while junior Matt Lathrop led the Warriors with a 41.

Mansfield, 158 @ Stoughton, 179 – Final – Mansfield sophomore Jason See carded a round of 38 to earn match medalist honors and pace the Hornets to a win on the road against Stoughton. Ryan Dow, Ava Haggis and Joe Gormley all chipped in with a 40 for Mansfield. Stoughton was led by Luke Bainton with a 40 and Josh Hough with a 43.

Milford, 8 @ Nipmuc, 1 – Final (Match Play)

Oliver Ames, 160 @ Taunton, 191 – Final – Oliver Ames senior Nolan Donze shot a 2-under par round of 34 to lead the Tigers to a win. Ryan Bock added a 40, Tate Hadges finished with a 42, and Brad Powers added a 44 for the Tigers.

Stoughton, 0 @ Milford, 1 – Final – Stoughton’s goalie Brianna Buckley had an outstanding game in net but the Hawks were able to earn two points at home. Milford’s Olivia Sullivan scored the game-winning goal while Hawks goalie Olivia Marshall made five saves in net. Stoughton head coach Tara Daniels said Olivia O’Neil, Nicole Weir, and Nikki Anderson all had strong games defensively for the Knights.

Field Hockey
Attleboro, 0 @ Foxboro, 5 – Final

Mansfield, 2 @ Canton, 4 – Final – Canton’s Meghan LaBelle and Maggie Malloy each scored a pair of goals as the Bulldogs picked up their second win in as many days.

Franklin, 1 @ North Attleboro, 0 – Final – Click here for a Photo Gallery from this game. Franklin’s Victoria Quinn scored with under 10 minutes to play to give the Panthers a win on the road at North Attleboro. Quinn got her stick on a shot from Cassi Ronan to put the Panthers up 1-0 with eight minutes left. Christina Luccini made a save on a penalty stroke early in the second half to keep the game tied.

Stoughton, 0 @ King Philip, 6 – Final – Four different Warriors had at least two points as King Philip recorded a big win over Stoughton. Alli Meehan had two goals and an assist while Claire Lawlor, Dana Truini, and Nicole Connor each scored once and had one helper. Meghan MacDonald also scored once while Kate Lindmark added an assist. KP co-head coach Kim Meehan added that Christina Gifun, Emma Izydorczak, and Sammy Robinson played well defensively for the Warriors.

Taunton, 2 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Lauren Torres and Jillian Pagliuca each scored once as Taunton went on the road and earned a win over Milford. Emma Sheehan had the shutout in net for the Tigers while Alana Tavares, Skylar Rheaume, and Kathryn Robinson all played well for Taunton.

Volleyball
Attleboro, 1 @ Foxboro, 3 – Final – Attleboro won the third set to prevent the sweep but Foxboro came back and won the fourth set to clinch the win (25-17, 25-18, 15-25, 25-16). For Attleboro, Ana Leonardo had 16 assists, a dig, a kill, and a block while Chelsea Calcagni paced the Bombardiers’ offense with nine kills.

Mansfield, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton edged out Mansfield by two points in the first set and went on to complete the sweep to beat Mansfield at home (25-23, 25-10, 25-28). Taylor Harris paced the Bulldogs’ offense with 11 kills, 11 digs, a pair of aces, and a block. Bailey Shea had a strong game at the net as well, registering two kills and a block. Nicole Brown added five kills, five aces, and 16 assists for Canton. For Mansfield, Greenly Kelly had nine kills ad four blocks, Sam Sternberg added 14 digs, and Abby Sullivan finished with nine service points.

Franklin junior Tyler Brogan crossed first, edging Mansfield’s Patrick Heavey by just two seconds. Franklin senior Mike Hagen and sophomore Nick Calitri took third and fourth overall while Mansfield’s Jason Windvogel rounded out the top five.

Hornet sophomore Tessa Lancaster was first overall, jumping ahead early and never looked back. Julia Fenerty was the first Panther to finish, taking second overall.

Jake Blaney chipped in with a 41 for Franklin while Ethan Johnson and Jack Handy led Attleboro, each shooting a 43.

Stoughton, 189 @ Foxboro, 169 – Final – Foxboro’s Noah Hicks earned medalist honors with a low-round of 41, leading the Warriors to a win over Stoughton. Charlie Baughan and Jon Dowling each shot 42 and Matt Hague had a 44 for the Warriors. Stoughton’s Max Huminik had a career-low round of 43 to lead the Black Knights.

King Philip, 184 @ Taunton, 187 – Final – King Philip juniors Ray Mullin, Jack Hastry, Nate Ihley, and Kayla Shuberth all shoot 46 to lead the Warriors to a win against Taunton.

Milford, 173 @ North Attleboro, 161 – Final – North Attleboro’s Marcus Costa and Matt Wanless led the Rocketeers, each shooting a 39 at the middle course of Heather Hill. Jillian Barend added a 40 and Brett Dusel carded a round of 43.
