Taunton, 1 @ Mansfield, 4 – Final – Five minutes into the game, sophomore Sean Lanzillo put the hosts on the board off an assist from Jack Rielly. Just over 15 minutes later, senior Jared Miller doubled the lead for the Hornets off an assist from Charlie Rogers to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Five minutes into the second half, Lanzillo set up Rogers for Mansfield’s third goal and just 10 mintues later Brendan Sullivan finished off a pass from Jareme DiLoranzo to make it 4-0. Austin Botelho scored a late goal for Taunton.

Girls Soccer
North Attleboro, 5 @ Attleboro, 1 – Final – Sophomore Haley Guertin and senior Hana Caster linked up three times for the Rocketeers to get a big win on the road over rival Attleboro. Caster set up Guertin for North Attleboro’s first and third goals while Guertin set up Caster for the Rocketeers’ fourth goal. Leah Jette scored North Attleboro’s second goal off an assist from Felicity Monfils and Caster added her second on a breakaway. Paige Medeiors scored Attleboro’s goal.

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Oliver Ames picked up its third straight win with a 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-9 win on the road. Bridget McCarthy led Oliver Ames with 48 assists and Emma Petrillo controlled the offense with 22 kills.
Franklin, 3 @ King Philip, 1 – Final – The Panthers picked up a key Kelley-Rex win with scores of 28-26, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21. Dayna McCue had 30 digs and four aces, Aubrie Kutil and Beth Neal each had 10 kills while Kutil added an ace and Neal had a pair of aces and blocks and 13 assists. Franklin Head coach Kate Horsmann said Caroline Maguire had a huge role defensively at the net with four blocks and three kills. For King Philip, Josie Rowean led the team in attacks and had six service points in game one, Gwen Uyrus added seven service points in game two, Emma Lopez had eight service points in game three, and Amanda Loewen had five digs.
Taunton, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – In a back and forth affair, Taunton snapped its three game skid with a 11-25, 29-27, 25-20, 16-25, 15-12 win. Tatum Speicher wa the catalyst for the offense with 39 assists, six digs and three kills. Molly Sullivan had 29 serve receives and 16 digs while Meghan Navarro solidified the back row with 15 digs and three aces. Mansfield sophomore Meg Hill had 13 hills, Juliana Newell added eight kills and Jess Haradon had 17 digs.
Milford, 2 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Stoughton rallied from a 2-1 deficit to pull off a 13-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13 win in thrilling fashion. Stoughton senior Bianca DeSousa had 20 assists, 15 digs, 27 service points and 10 aces and sophomore Valerie Whalen had 15 blocks and 6 kills. Stoughton head coach Ken Gay said Elizabeth Slade had outstanding defensive play for the Black Knights. For Milford, Jill Powers had a team-best 12 kills while Kara Halpin, Aleye Momodu and Kayla Antonellis each had seven kills apiece. Lauren Zouranjian and Allie Collins combined for 41 assists.

Less than 10 minutes later, junior Max Gurnon set up senior Charlie Rogers to double the Hornets’ lead. Sophomore Sean Lanzillo capped the scoring in the 54th minute off an assist from classmate Sam Hyland. Junior Evan Christo made his varsity debut in goal and made five saves for the shutout.
Oliver Ames, 1 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – OA’s Chris Romero scored the lone goal of the game in the 38th minute. Andrew Fillipkowski made nine saves for the Eagles, five in the first half alone. OA goalie Jack Carroll made three saves, including a sliding block on Sonny Somdah when he was clean through with 12 minutes remaining.
Girls Soccer
King Philip, 2 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Maddie Smith smith scored twice in the second half for the Warriors, converted on a through ball in the 59th minute and then again on a corner kick in the 80th minute. Attleboro head coach Steve Santos said Paige Medeiros and Cassie Vivar both played a great game and goalie Madison Brown had a couple of big saves to keep the game level in the first half.
Milford, 1 @ Canton, 2 – Final – Milford’s lone goal was scored by Kristen Franzini off an assist from Katie Brown. Milford head coach Jay Mastaj said midfielders Maggie Boyle and Francesca Shipperd both played well.
Foxboro, 2 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Lily Sykes and Hailey Maling each scored once for the Warriors while Jalissa Allen picked up the win in goal.
Taunton, 0 @ Franklin, 3 – Final – The game was scoreless into the final 20 minutes. Freshman Halle Atkinson broke the deadlock off an assist by Bailey Knous. Atkinson then assisted on a goal by Jess Kroushl. Alexis Stowell wrapped up the scoring off an assist from Victoria Stowell.
North Attleboro, 0 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Lindsay Dalton and Jackie Carchedi scored first half goals for the Hornets. Emily Gaumond recorded the clean sheet.

Canton, 3 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final – Canton picked up its second straight win with a 25-22, 25-13, 25-15 win over OA. Elizabeth Hamilton had 12 kills, 10 digs and two aces and Sarah Reissfelder had nine kills. Head coach Pat Cawley said Olivia Devoe, Erika Lum and Kehla Minkin played great defense.
Foxboro, 0 @ Milford, 3 – Final – Milford picked up its second sweep in as many days with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-11 win. Jill Powers led the Scarlet Hawks with 12 kills, Kara Halpin added eight kills and Kayla Antonellis and Kelley Reichert each had seven kills. Lauren Zouranjian had 35 assists in the win.
King Philip, 3 @ North Attleboro, 2 – Final – King Philip battled back from five points down in the fourth game (26-24) to force a fifth game, a set in which they dominated (15-1). King Philip won 17-25, 25-13, 16-25, 26-24, 15-1. In the fifth set, Gwen Uyrus had 13 straight service points, including six aces to give the Warriors the big boost. Emma Lopez had five aces and three kills, Josie Rowean finished with 20 kills and Molly Citarell had six digs for KP.
Sharon, 0 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Stoughton picked up its first sweep of the season with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-10 win over Sharon. Stoughton sophomore Val Whalen had five blocks, seven kills, five digs and six service points, Ariana Riske added 11 digs and 12 service points and Ava Siegel had 10 digs and 11 service points.
Field Hockey
Attleboro, 2 @ King Philip, 2 – Final – Attleboro and King Philip went into halftime tied 1-1 and finished in a deadlock when the final whistle blew. Emily Houle scored in the first half for Attleboro before KP tied it up off a corner by Courtney Foley on an assist from Casie Curtin. Grace Mayer scored off a penalty stroke in the second half to put the Bombardiers back ahead but a goal by Caitlin Donahue, assisted by Liz Furfari, knotted the game again.
Canton, 2 @ Milford, 2 – Final – Canton took a 1-0 lead into halftime but Milford battled back twice, scoring its first ever goals against the Bulldogs since joining the Hockomock League. Nicole Fokas tied things up off an assist from Jessica Palmer. Canton went up again but a goal from Shannon Cormier leveled things again.
Stoughton, 0 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final
Mansfield, 4 @ North Attleboro, 2 – Final – Emily Ierardo scored a pair of goals for the Hornets while Brianna Puccia and Julia Todesco each netted a goal for Mansfield.
Oliver Ames, 6 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Senior Nicole Walker scored four goals to lead Oliver Ames while senior Olivia Powers had three assists in the win.

Jimmy Robbins (17:22) and Nicholas Gnaman (17:28) finished third and fourth while Jeff Wu (17:52) finished sixth, Evan St. Germaine (17:54) finished seventh and Tyler Marchioni (18:03) finished eighth. King Philip’s Seth Sullivan (17:20) finished second and Brendan Sullivan (17:29) finished fifth.
Mansfield, 18 @ Taunton, 39 – Final – Mansfield’s Jake Affanato (16:48), Nick Rispoli (16:49) and Kevin Crawford (16:54) took the top three spots. Taunton’s top finish was senior Trevor Wysong, who finished fourth at 16:54.

Canton, 157 @ Stoughton, 179 – Final – Canton sophomore Jack Goyetch shot an even part 36 to lead the Bulldogs to their sixth straight win. Senior Griffin Jerrier carded a 38 and senior Steve Gorham shot a 41 for Canton. Stoughton’s Josh Roos shot a team-low 43 for the Black Knights.
Mansfield, 171 @ Taunton, 170 – Final – Taunton edged Kelley-Rex rival Mansfield by a stroke. Mario Wilson shot a 39 and Justin Proto carded a 42 for the Tigers.
Sharon, 229 @ Foxboro, 232 – Final – The match was tied at 182 through four cards and Sharon took the when their fifth score was a 47 compared to Foxboro’s 50.

Panthers Shut Out Mansfield in Battle of Unbeatens

MANSFIELD, Mass. – The air was cool, even chilly, the lights were on at Alumni Field and Monday evening’s matchup between unbeaten Mansfield and Franklin girls’ soccer did not feel like the fifth game of the season.
The action on the pitch felt like a state tournament game and the reaction of the Mansfield players after the final whistle showed just what it meant to the Hornets.
“It’s five games in and my girls wanted it so bad that they’re upset right now,” said Mansfield coach Kevin Smith. “They’re saying that we did not play at the level we want to and I’m very happy with that.”
Franklin went on the road and sent a message to its division rivals that it was still the team to beat with a 3-0 victory. Bailey Knous, Jamie Dragsbaek and Victoria Stowell were on target for the Panthers, but it was the back four and the defensive pressure in the midfield that both coaches credited for the win.
“The pressure up front was causing them problems,” said Franklin coach Tom Geysen. “It makes them less apt to pushing everyone forward and in the first half they started getting away from what they were doing and started whacking the ball long, which takes them out of their game.”
The Panthers needed only four minutes to take the lead. Megan Georges picked up the ball in the hole behind the forwards and hit a perfect through ball to Knous, who managed to hold off Anna Chiaralonza and slide the ball past the onrushing Emily Gaumond.
It was a struggle in the first half for the Hornets who had trouble matching Franklin’s pace and the control of the midfield. Mansfield created only one chance in the opening 40 minutes when Katie Bongarzone managed a shot from 20 yards that hit the angle of post and crossbar.
“We were running helter skelter,” said Smith. Our shape was terrible. Their spacing was fantastic but we were also letting them win easy 50-50s. I thought we cleaned that up in the second half and gave them a much better game.”
Franklin was not creating many clear-cut chances but was keeping the pressure on the Mansfield back four. Alexis Stowell had a chance with a header on a cross from her twin sister Victoria and then created another scoring opportunity for Knous minutes before halftime only for Gaumond to make the sliding save.
“When we come here, our girls really get up for them because they’re always very, very good,” said Geysen. “It’s the first time all season that we’ve played a full 80 minutes the way that we’re capable.”
“I told them that this is the best, total game in two years.”
The second half was far more even with Mansfield starting to get more involved in the physical battles, but it was still Franklin that had the majority of the chances. Knous flicked a header onto Stowell only for Gaumond to come flying out and make the save at the feet of the forward.
Mansfield made a change and brought junior Hannah Reiter from center back to the center of midfield to try and improve the Hornets attack. The Quinnipiac-commit made an instant impact with a dipping shot from 25 yards that forced Franklin keeper Dani Lonati to tip it over the bar.
Smith explained, “We were missing that link between the midfielders and the forwards who could just get a ball under composure and attack – not just kick it. Just to have that presence there…she won headers and helped us sustain attacks.”
Despite the Hornets increasingly putting pressure forward, the Franklin back four managed to clear everything that came its way. The central defenders, Meghan Dieterle and Lauren Rudolph, worked well in tandem with one going to the ball and the other always there to cover.
The outside backs, junior Nadia Havens and Abi Gipson, were able to keep track of Mansfield’s dangerous duo of Jackie Carchedi and Jen Kemp.
“Before the game, my other outside back told me that she was sick and couldn’t play so I grabbed Abby and said next body up and she played well,” said Geysen.
In the 70th minute, a Franklin break led to a corner. Rudolph played it into the middle and the ball bounced in the six-yard box before junior Jamie Dragsbaek volleyed in the loose ball to make it 2-0.
In the final seconds, Victoria Stowell, who had been a dominant force in the midfield for the Panthers, wrapped up the scoring with a 35-yard free kick that soared into the back of the net and added some gloss to the final score.
“When she stepped up I told her right on [net], right on,” said Geysen of his junior midfielder. “She steps up in big games. Against teams like this and OA, she steps up.”
Smith noted, “[The score] didn’t reflect the game, but the better team did win…They were slightly better than us and they earned it.”
Mansfield (4-1-0) will host Kelley-Rex rival North Attleboro on Thursday afternoon. Franklin (4-0-1) will be back home to play Taunton.

Attleboro, 0 @ Taunton, 1 – Final – Senior Austin Botelho scored less than three minutes into the second half as Taunton picked up a big win against division rival Attleboro. Hasan Farahat set up Botelho for the lone goal of the game on a shot from 20 yards out. Marc DeSousa made eight saves in net including a save to protect the win with five minutes to play.
Canton, 0 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final – Oliver Ames senior Chris Romero scored a pair of second half goals to help the Tigers continue their perfect start. Romero scored first off an assist from Keegan Nutt and then converted a chance from Max Ahearn.
Foxboro, 3 @ Milford, 0 – Final – Devante Teixeira scored the opening goal in the 14th minute and then assisted on Foxboro’s third goal to Hussein Kafel, scored inside the first three minutes of the second half. Anthony Barreira converted a penalty kick in the 24th minute for Foxboro. Milford senior goalie Mike Da Silva made 11 saves in net.
Mansfield, 2 @ Franklin, 0 – Final – A pair of throw ins from senior captain Chris Elsner turned into a pair of goals for Mansfield in a big win on the road. Just three minutes into the game, Elsner’s throw found Jared Miller who found the back of the net. Midway through the second half Elsner found Charlie Rogers to double the lead. Michael Kirejczyk picked up his fourth shutout of the season. Head coach Steve Sheridan credited defenders Max Gurnon, Nick Hyland and Harry Braidt, along with Elsner, for strong games.
King Philip, 2 @ North Attleboro, 0 – Final – The Warriors used a pair of second half goals from senior captain Joe Kellett to pick up their third win of the season. Inside the first minute of the second half, Ryan Coulter’s cross was deflected by Larsen Keys to Kellett at the edge of the area and he buried it. Just before the midway point of the second half, Thomas Lugten cut back and found Kellett again at the top of the area and he converted again.
Stoughton, 1 @ Sharon, 0 – Final – Senior Winston Kessah set up junior Loubensky Lucas for the game-winning goal inside the final five minutes. Stoughton head coach Aaron Salter called Lucas’ finish a “sublime long distance finish.” Salter also credited Tyler Melo for a strong game in the midfield and Goddy Frombe for a strong game in the back.

Taunton, 5 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Alana Vincent scored a pair of goals and added an assist for the Tigers. Sam Tichelaar also scored a pair of goals and Mariah O’Gara netted one. Taunton goalie Kayla Wentworth made seven saves in net for the shutout.
Oliver Ames, 1 @ Canton, 0 – Final – Oliver Ames junior Francesca Calabraro netted the lone goal of the game midway through the first half, converting after a through ball from junior Julia Roy. Sophomore Regan Benton and freshman Bethany Dunk combined for the shutout in goal. Head coach Britt Sellmayer said sophomore Jackie Mills and senior Erin Fitzgerald played well for the Tigers.
Milford, 0 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Riley Collins and Hannah Burns netted first half goals to lift the Warriors to a win.
Franklin, 3 @ Mansfield, 0 – Final – Bailey Knous scored four minutes into the game to give Franklin the lead. The score stayed the same until there was 10 minutes left when Jamie Dragsbaek volleyed in a second off a corner. In the final seconds, Victoria Stowell scored on a 30-yard free kick to make it 3-0.
North Attleboro, 7 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – Haley Guertin scored her second straight hat trick, scoring twice in the first half and adding a third in the second half. Hana Caster also netted a pair of first half goals and added two assists. Grace Guertin and Gabriela Versona each scored one.

Freshman goalie Lydia Chase made eight saves in her first varsity appearance. Shanel Ford netted the Black Knights’ lone goal while senior goalie Marissa Williams had 10 saves in net for Stoughton.
Volleyball
Franklin, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Dayna McCue had 12 digs and five aces, Beth Neal had 14 assists, six kills and a pair of aces and Aubrie Kutil had seven kills. Head coach Kate Horsmann said Rose Morrissette and Sam Campbell played well defensively.
Foxboro, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton bounced back into the win column with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-23 win over an upset-minded Foxboro squad. Elizabeth Hamilton led the Bulldogs with 13 kills, Rye Verille had 10 kills and a pair of block and Nicole Poole totaled 29 assists. Olivia Devoe continued her stellar play at the libero spot with 20 digs for Canton.
King Philip, 1 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Mansfield dropped the first set (19-25) but came back to win the next three 25-11, 25-17, 25-23. The Hornets’ offense was led by 10 kills from Sarah Mullahy and eight kills from Olivia Broyles. Colleen Riley had 14 serve receives to pace the defense. For King Philip, Gwen Uyrus led the Warriors with nine kills and three aces.
Milford, 3 @ Sharon, 1 – Final
North Attleboro, 2 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – It was a back and forth contest between the Tigers and the Rocketeers that Taunton was able to walk away from with a win (25-27, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, 15-7). Alyssa Gibson had nine kills and six blocks while Aimee Kistner played the role of spark plug with seven kills, six aces and three blocks. Taunton’s Tatum Speicher added 27 assists, four kills and a pair of aces in the win.
Oliver Ames, 2 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Senior middle blocker Bridgette Whalen had a strong all-around game for the Black Knights with 12 service points, 10 digs, eight blocks and eight aces. Senior outside hitter Ava Siegel had 23 digs, 15 serve receives and five kills and junior setter Christina Gelin had 10 service points and seven assists.

Attleboro, 3 @ Taunton, 2 – Final – Grace Mayer scored a pair of goals for the Bombardiers while Katie Patton netted a goal. Quincy Harding picked up a assists for Attleboro in the win. Attleboro goalie Isabelle Maragnano made five saves in net and Lacey Roy also made a big defense save.
Canton, 4 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final

Mansfield, 3 @ Franklin, 4 – Final – Freshman Annie Walsh scored what turned into the eventual game-winner 10 minutes into the second half for the Panthers. Walsh also had an assist on Franklin’s third goal, scored by Caroline Lounsbury with under five minutes to play in the first half. Freshman Cassi Roman and junior Dana Lewandowski also scored for Franklin while goalie Samantha Jones made 12 saves in net. Franklin head coach Lisa Cropper said Kenzi Pleshaw played an outstanding game on defense.
King Philip, 1 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final
Stoughton, 4 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Stoughton’s Mia Russell netted a hat trick to lead the Black Knights to their second win in a three day span. Olivia Schlehuber also scored a goal for the Black Knights. Sharon’s Rachel Usen scored the lone goal for the Eagles.

Mansfield, 174 @ Sharon, 176 – Final – Mansfield’s David Craig and Kyle Swansburg each shot a 43 for the Hornets as they moved to 4-0 on the season. Sharon’s Max Avratin and Eli Hearne also carded 43 for the Eagles.
King Philip, 170 @ Attleboro, 183 – Final – Sophomore Danny McLaughlin earned the match medalist by shooting a 41 for the Warriors, including a birdie on the 9th hole.
Canton, 152 @ Milford, 158 – Final – Sophomore Danny Powers carded a one under 34 for the Bulldogs and Jim Jenkins shot a 36 in a close win for Canton. Ryan Tomaso shot a 36 for the Scarlet Hawks.
Oliver Ames, 164 @ Foxboro, 185 – Final – Steven Tasho and Brian Lambert each carded a match-low 40 for the Tigers. Foxboro’s Brandon Wasserman had a team-low 43 for the Warriors.
Benton Saves Day, OA and Franklin End in Stalemate

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Last year, when Franklin and Oliver Ames met in the first game of the girls’ soccer season, the Panthers dominated with a number of scoring chances that weren’t put away. In the end, keeper Dani Lonati saved the Panthers from those wasted chances by stopping a late penalty kick and earning a point.
This year, the roles were reversed in the second half at Muscato Stadium. Oliver Ames dominated the ball in the second half, pushing forward, and controlling the center of the pitch, but struggled to put away the chances that it created.
In the dying seconds, sophomore goalie Regan Benton made her third huge save of the half, diving out at the feet of Meg Adams, to stop a breakaway and ensure the battle of reigning league champions finished 0-0.
“When we had our chances, we couldn’t put them on frame,” said OA coach Britt Sellmayer. “We had some chances to shoot and they either went wide or were from too far out and with a keeper like Dani it needs to be in the corner with some pace on it.”
Franklin coach Tom Geysen added, “We’re fortunate that we’re getting out of here without a loss. That’s how he (Sellmayer) felt last year. It’s a forward step in some areas and some work to do in others.”
The first half was a midfield battle with neither team able to create much in the way of consistent attack. The game was not helped by the temperatures soaring into the 90s, which felt even hotter on the sun-drenched turf. Both teams utilized their benches frequently to make sure the players would not wear down.
Sellmayer explained, “It’s the team-first attitude I’ve talked to them about. I’m going to play a lot of players. I might have done longer shifts, instead of seven minutes I might have done nine or 10, but I’m just keeping them fresh.”
Franklin had two chances, a Megan Georges shot and a Victoria Stowell free kick, in the opening 20 minutes that forced Benton into saves, although neither was particularly difficult. Kiana Lozzi nearly broke the game open in the 26th minute with s strong run at the heart of the Franklin defense but her shot from 20 yards out would not curl enough to sneak into the corner of the net.
The best chance of the first half fell to Franklin senior Alexis Stowell in the 37th minute. Adams won a header towards the edge of the box and Bailey Knous hustled to steal it from the defender and cut it back to Stowell but her first-time shot from the edge of the six-yard box was saved at the near post by Benton.
The second half was more one-sided with OA imposing its style on the game. The Tigers are a strong, physical squad and like the ball in the air where midfielder Francesca Calabraro controlled the game.
“Francesca was dominant in the middle today,” said Sellmayer. “I think she must have had 10-15 headers, which is huge for us. Kiana played stronger in the second half. Things will come.”
Fourteen minutes into the second half, the game suddenly broke into life with a through ball flicked into the path of Lozzi by Julia Roy forced Lonati off her line quickly to save at the forward’s feet. Just seconds later, Franklin had a chance when Alexis Stowell finally snuck in behind the left back and was free on goal only to be denied by Benton again at the near post.
In the 64th minute, Benton was again forced into action when Victoria Stowell found space on the edge of the box and fired a shot that was tipped over the bar. On the ensuing corner, OA broke quickly with junior winger Lauren Wright being played into space down the right and raced the full half of the field only to place her shot inches wide of the post.
A couple minutes later OA again worked space on the right side of the box with Lozzi who turned and cut it back to Calabraro, but she didn’t get full contact on her shot and hit it right at Lonati.
Franklin was struggling to get Stowell, Adams, and Knous into the game, in part because of the solid defending of young outside backs Jaqueline Mills (sophomore) and Zoe Chazan (freshman). Sellmayer marveled, “That’s a big introduction into big time soccer and Zoey and Jackie did a great job on the outside for us today.”
As the game started to wind down, the young Panthers started to come into the game and move the ball from side to side, probing the defense. With four minutes left, Knous had a chance but pulled it just wide and then with the clock stopped at 2:00 Adams suddenly burst onto a through ball in the box.
Trailed by two defenders, Adams stretched to get a shot off but Benton was quick off her line, made herself big, and smothered the chance. There was a big collision and Adams was left punching the turf in frustration that he had not been able to find the late winner.
“When it comes down to it, their keeper came up big for them or it could’ve been a loss,” said Geysen.
Franklin will host Foxboro on Friday at Pisini Field, while Oliver Ames will travel to Taunton on Saturday morning.

Girls Soccer: 2015 Kelley-Rex Division Preview

ATTLEBORO
2014 Record: 3-12-3
2014 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Steve Santos
Attleboro heads into the 2015 season with a strong core of sophomores that have the Bombardiers thinking positive thoughts about the future, although this may be a season of growing pains.
Paige Medeiros is back for Attleboro and the senior midfielder will be a key player for the Bombardiers as her set pieces have been one of their best sources for creating scoring chances. Head coach Steve Santos will also be hoping for positive contributions from Rebecca Entwistle and Kayla Merritt among other returning players. Attleboro also has several players bouncing back from serious injuries who could step right back into the lineup.
Attleboro scored only eight goals a season ago and offense may be at a premium again this fall as the young players grow into their new roles. The Bombardiers will focus on pressuring the opposition and being tough to beat.
FRANKLIN
2014 Record: 17-1-3
2014 Finish: Reached D1 South Final
Coach: Tom Geysen
Franklin reached its third consecutive Div. 1 South final last fall but couldn’t come through with a three-peat in an overtime loss to Whitman-Hanson. The Panthers lost several key pieces including two-time HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Taylor Cogliano, but remain among the favorites for the Kelley-Rex title.
The Stowell twins, Assumption commits Victoria and Alexis, are two important players coming back for the Panthers in midfield and attack along with senior forward Bailey Knous, who has battled injuries during her career but when on the field can be prolific in front of goal. Also, junior Meg Adams is back and healthy, which will be a huge boost in the early season, and Megan Georges returns after a breakout season at attacking mid.
Franklin was not only a strong offensive team but also one of the league’s best defensively and Geysen is counting on Lauren Rudolph and Meghan Dietrle to hold down the center of defense while young players step into roles on the outside. Geysen is confident his team is going to be solid, but he believes younger players are going to need to grow into new positions if the Panthers are going to get back to the sectional final.
KING PHILIP
2014 Record: 6-6-8
2014 Finish: Reached D1 South Preliminary Round
Coach: Gary Pichel
King Philip is waiting on a new turf field to be finished, but in the meantime will be battling the Kelley-Rex leaders and aiming for another spot in the postseason.
The Warriors will return junior striker Rachel Hogan, who will be joined this fall by senior captain Makenzie Nickerson, who is returning after 1-1/2 years out with a knee injury and should be a big boost to the forward line. Maggie Hall will return for her second year in goal and Lauren Hehn and Kate Sexton are back to shore up the midfield and Brooke Thomas and Emma Corcoran will lead the defense.
Logan Greenburg, Liz Cooley, and Caitlin McNulty are new faces that head coach Gary Pichel says “will add an exciting style of play across the board.” He added, “Our goal this year is to compete well with all the teams in the Hock and of course, make it to the postseason.”
MANSFIELD
2014 Record: 11-4-4
2014 Finish: Reached D1 South Quarterfinal
Coach: Kevin Smith
The Hornets took No. 1 seed to the brink in the quarterfinals last season before being knocked out of the playoffs. This year’s team will be missing several key pieces from that squad, but returns 14 players including several from the 2014 HockomockSports.com Second XI.
Mansfield will be counting on junior Quinnipiac commit Hannah Reiter to continue her emergence as a star player in the Hock and to dominate in the midfield. Up top, the Hornets will have plenty of firepower with seniors Jackie Carchedi and Jen Kemp back after combining for 19 goals last fall. Defensively, Mansfield also has plenty coming back with Trish Murphy, Lindsey Dalton, and Anna Chiarolanza all returning.
The top four scorers are all back for Mansfield and all but one of the starting back four. Head coach Kevin Smith also noted that the players who are returning have 2-3 years of experience at the varsity level and should be able to step right in to keep the Hornets among the top teams in the league.
NORTH ATTLEBORO
2014 Record: 10-5-4
2014 Finish: Reached D1 South First Round
Coach: Glenn Pasquel
The Rocketeers were stunned in overtime by league rival Mansfield in the first round last year and will have a new coach with former JV coach Glen Pasquel taking over from Doug Wheldon.
While there are plenty of changes for the Rocketeers this season, there was plenty of youth on last year’s team that could develop into top talents. North will look to senior Hana Caster for the primary scoring punch and Pasquel is pleased with the developing partnership up top between Caster and sophomore Haley Guertin. Grace Guertin is back in the midfield and Rachel Labonte will be moved back into defense to cover for the loss of Hannah Kane.
Pasquel feels comfortable moving into his new role and hopes to instill a passing game that keeps the ball on the ground. He is also adding a sweeper/stopper system rather than a flat back four. Once again, North appears to be a team that can compete among the best in the league.
TAUNTON
2014 Record: 6-9-4
2014 Finish: Missed the playoffs
Coach: Edith Dixon
Taunton earned plaudits for its growth under first-year head coach Edie Dixon last season, as the Tigers won six games and showed tenacity and competitiveness with everyone they played. This season, Taunton will return all but two starters and is eyeing a potential tournament berth.
HockomockSports.com Second XI goalie Kayla Wentworth is among the returning players and will be expected to backstop the Tigers defense. Up top, the combination of Bristol-Plymouth transfer Alana Vincent and Sam Tichelaar will be back to provide a scoring punch and freshman Maggie Sullivan will be back in midfield after starting a couple of games as an eighth grader in 2014.
Dixon has high hopes for the Tigers. She said, “We’ve got high expectations for this season and are getting excited to get into games.”

Francesca Calabraro, Junior – Oliver Ames
Fresh off a national title with her club team this summer, last season’s Underclassman of the Year comes into the fall with high expectations and as the star player in the heart of a team that has the potential to bring home its third straight Davenport title. Last fall, as a sophomore, Calabraro recorded nine goals and 10 assists to lead the Tigers to the division title, while showing off her versatility as both a deep-lying midfielder and pushing forward to slot in behind the forwards. There are few surprises in the Hockomock and teams know to key on Calabraro to disrupt the OA midfield and it will be up to her to manage the defensive pressure and keep pushing the Tigers forward.
Jackie Carchedi, Senior – Mansfield
The Hornets lost several key pieces from last year’s squad but Carchedi, the team’s leading point-getter, is returning and will once again try to combine with center forward Jen Kemp to provide Mansfield with a front line capable of challenging the top teams in the league and D1 South. Carchedi had eight goals and 14 assists in 2014 playing as a wide forward on the left side. Her speed, eye for a pass, and ability to cross accurately make her a constant threat on the edge, including he overtime goal that beat North Attleboro in the playoffs. As expected from the Defensive Player of the Year in basketball, Carchedi also provides great energy on the defensive side of the ball.
Hana Caster, Senior – North Attleboro
One of the fastest players in the league, Caster provided the spark for the Rocketeers last fall that carried North into the tournament, including late goals to tie Foxboro on the road and an impressive performance that helped the Rocketeers knock off OA. North had a dramatic overtime loss in the tournament, but Caster will be back for her senior year with a strong cast of young players, including sophomore Haley Guertin, which could be set to make another tourney run. A typically soft-spoken forward and midfielder, Caster will need to be the team’s leader and use her pace and finishing to help the Rocketeers under first-year coach Glenn Pasquel.
Riley Duserick, Sophomore – Canton
It seems like every time one Duserick leaves another is ready to step in for the Bulldogs. Brianna is currently playing at Stonehill, Hailee is a freshman at Providence, and last fall Riley stepped in as a freshman to play a key role down the stretch for Canton as it chased a tournament spot. Duserick stepped into the midfield and showed the ability to play the key forward pass or keep possession like a player with far more experience. Her 40-yard shot into the top corner against Milford also showed that she took some other skills from her sisters. She was named an all-star by the Hockomock coaches and has great promise to repeat that this fall.
Rachel Hogan, Junior – King Philip
The Warriors can be a team focused on the defensive side of the ball and making it difficult to play, but Hogan was able to create a spark on the other end of the pitch as well. Her speed forced defenses to stay honest and kept them from pushing too far forward. Hogan could also drop deep to collect the ball and her skill and strength made it difficult for teams to force turnovers. There were times that she was a little isolated up front, but she was always a willing runner to chase long passes forward. With KP adding a turf field, it may allow her skills to shine even more this year.
Bailey Knous, Senior – Franklin
Knous is a dynamic forward and one of the leading scorers for the Panthers, who reached a third straight sectional final last fall. Knous scored double digit goals again in 2014, despite occasionally battling injuries. When healthy, she can be one of the most prolific scorers in the Hockomock and fits into the Panthers style as a striker that can play on the shoulder of the last defender as well as drop in and allow the wide players to push forward. With Knous on the pitch as a focal point to the attack, Franklin looked more dangerous, as evidenced by the opening 15 minutes of the final against Whitman-Hanson when Franklin created chance after chance. This could be a big year for the senior.
Hannah Reiter, Junior – Mansfield
In a team filled with big name players, there were times that Reiter appeared to be flying under the radar, but then she would take the ball down in traffic, step by two defenders and either let loose with a shot or pick out a pass to spring a teammate. Her combination of size and skill made her stand out among a very talented and experienced midfield and this year she will be counted on to step into a leadership role with the Hornets losing both Melissa Bongarzone and Lindsey Bjorkman. Mansfield has talent returning, but Reiter, a Quinnipiac-commit, will be a central cog to how far the Hornets can go this fall playing multiple roles from playmaker to ball-winner for the Hornets.
Victoria Stowell, Senior – Franklin
The Assumption-commit has continued to grow well beyond her stature and can dominate the game with her passing ability. Stowell rarely gives the ball away in midfield and, although she’s not the biggest midfielder in the league, can also get stuck in and win the ball back. The Panthers have an explosive attack and much of it stems from Stowell, a two-time HockomockSports.com Best XI choice, finding the right pass to unlock the defense. With Taylor Cogliano graduated, Stowell may be asked to push even further forward to help spring the attack.
Lily Sykes, Sophomore – Foxboro
Sykes was outstanding in her rookie season in the Hockomock with more than 25 goals and more than 30 points for the Warriors, who finished second in the Davenport and reached the second round of the state tournament. The challenge for Sykes will be repeating and building on that incredible freshman form, but with her skill set, comfort on the ball, and ability to read the game in multiple positions in the midfield, expectations are very high for the Underclassman of the Year honorable mention and favorite for this year’s award.
Kayla Wentworth, Senior – Taunton
Taunton showed huge improvement under first-year head coach Edith Dixon, winning six games and staying competitive against some of the top teams in the league. One of the reasons for that continued improvement is the play of Wentworth, who has at times stood on her head to keep the Tigers in games and give them time to find goals on the other end. Beyond her save statistics, Wentworth inspired confidence in the defenders in front of her and was able to marshal the Taunton defense. As the Tigers continue to build the program, one more year of Wentworth in net will be a huge boost for Taunton’s hopes of reaching the postseason.
