SHARON, Mass. – In a battle between two sophomore pitchers, Mansfield’s Tyler Dalton emerged victorious, throwing a one-hit complete game shutout to give the Hornets a 3-0 over Sharon on Friday afternoon.

Dalton and Sharon’s Max Tarlin, who was making his varsity debut, both went the distance. Dalton’s one hit came in the fifth inning, a single down the right field line by Jordan Chabot. Only one other Sharon runner reached – Jake Teven – on an error in the sixth inning while Dalton finished with eight strikeouts. Tarlin scattered seven hits, issuing just one walk and two earned runs in his debut.

“Tyler’s performance, it was exactly what we needed,” Mansfield head coach Joe Breen said after his squad improved to 4-7 on the season. “Our seniors have been great leaders all year and a couple guys are struggling a little bit so we’ve needed the younger guys to pick it up and try and set the tone a little bit until the seniors get back on track. Tyler was certainly the guy for us today.”

Both Dalton and Tarlin had three strikeouts apiece through two innings of play. Mansfield was able to cash in first in the top of the third inning behind a one out triple from Zack Peterson. Peterson ripped a shot to right center field and was singled in by Aidan Cahill on the first pitch he saw. Tarlin recovered with a pop up and a strike out to end the inning.

The Hornets were back at it in the fourth inning. Two straight throwing errors that drew the first baseman off the bag put Dan Saraceno and Jake Tryder on base with no outs. Sharon’s Mark Botaish made a nice running grab in foul territory for the first out and a fielder’s choice put runners on the corners with two outs. Max Boen, hitting in the nine spot, drove a base hit up the middle to plate Saraceno to make it 2-0.

Mansfield scored a run for the third straight inning in the top of the fifth. Aidan Cahill’s hit eluded the sliding attempt of Sharon centerfielder Andrew Filipkowski, turning a single into a runner on second with no outs situation. Mike Arnold’s single moved Cahill to third and Tyrone Pascual’s sacrifice fly – which was turned into a double play at first – brought Cahill in as final run of the game in from third.

“It’s been the story of the season for us so far, we’re getting guys on just not scoring,” Breen said after his Hornets had a runner on base in all innings except two. “We’ve had games where we get guys on six out of the seven innings and haven’t scored. We haven’t gotten those one or two big hits to break a game open. We still didn’t get those hits today but we got enough.”

Sharon finally was able to reach base in the bottom of the fifth inning when Chabot ripped a two out shot into right field. The Eagles tried to build the momentum by sending Chabot to try and steal second but Mansfield catcher Mike Arnold’s throw and Boen’s tag was in time to end the inning.

“It’s a combination of Tyler on the mound, kind of growing up a little bit in the last couple of weeks, being able to get over a hit like that because he knew what he had lost, I could see it in his eyes. And then getting some help from a senior captain, throwing the guy out at second to kill any of their momentum, it was a big one,” Breen said.

Although Tarlin was dealt the loss, he was impressive in his first ever varsity start. He struck out seven in seven innings of work.

“His performance is the main thing I’m taking away from this game,” Sharon first year coach Kee Arguimbau said. “That and the fact that the Mansfield pitcher was just as good, maybe a little better. A little better in the sense that he was pitching ahead but overall I couldn’t be any happier with Max Tarlin’s performance today. As far as the game, you just have to tip your cap to the other pitcher, he threw the lights out. We couldn’t get around on him, and when you don’t get any hits or score any runs, you’re not going to win games.”

Mansfield baseball (3-6, 4-7) will look to make it two in a row when they travel to the Kelley-Rex leading Warriors of King Philip on Monday. Sharon (1-8, 1-10) will try to bounce back when they host Milford the same day.

“At the halfway mark, we were 3-7,” Breen said. “We needed to go 7-3 the rest of the way but the message has been, and the guys did it today, we need to go 1-0 each game. We have to worry about each day individually, we can’t go 7-3 in one game so we have to take it one game at a time.”

CANTON

2015 Record: 11-11
2015 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round
Coach: JP Scott

The Bulldogs graduated a handful of key pieces from last year’s team that reached the playoffs but they also return plenty of experienced players and hope to reach the playoffs again.

“The expectation for us is to have a successful season and make a run for a small Hock title,” Canton head coach JP Scott said. “But our main goal of the season will be to make it back to the state tournament like we did in 2015.”

Canton has 11 seniors on the roster this season led by captains Griffin Jerrier and Joe Peccia. Jerrier has plenty of experience on the bump while Peccia was second on the team last year with a .393 batting average. The Bulldogs also have their top batter back in Kevin Powers, who batted over .400 last year and drove in 15 runs in the season. Powers was also one of Canton’s top pitchers after logging over 40 innings in 2015.

Scott also brings back Jim Jenkins, Mike McMahon, Sean Doyle and Joe Bires, all which have starting experience. Junior Jackson Maffeo, fresh off a tremendous season on the ice, is expected to contribute in his first season on varsity.

FOXBORO

2015 Record: 4-16
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Chris Sullivan

After just four wins last year, the Warriors look poised to improve on that this year. Foxboro graduated just two seniors year last and have seven starters back for 2016.

“This is the hardest working and most dedicated group that has come through the school since I graduated in 2002,” head coach Chris Sullivan said. “We have a ton of guys who worked hard in the weight room, in the cages, and by playing competitive summer baseball this past offseason.”

Justin Garcia will lead a strong group of experienced pitchers. Garcia had a 1.54 ERA last season, striking out nearly 50 batters to rank near the top of the league. Colin Thoener, Darren Kelly and Aaron Wentling will also all see time on the mound this season.

Chad Bearce will likely handle first base while Garcia is on the mound while Darren Kelly and John Cronin will see time up the middle. Thoener will show off his defensive prowess at third and senior Nick Wright will return for his third season patrolling centerfield for Foxboro. AJ Cavossa, AJ Bubencik and Cam Feldman will all split the other outfield time and Jesse Galanti is back behind the plate for the third consecutive season.

MILFORD

2015 Record: 11-10
2015 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round
Coach: Paul Pellegrini

After just getting into the postseason last year, Milford has key pieces back in key positions to try and keep their playoff streak alive.

“This team is a very athletic team with lots of versatility,” head coach Paul Pellegrini said. “If we put everything together, which I believe we will, we should be fun to watch. We will definitely be very competitive and strong team all around.”

One big reason that Milford has a shot at getting back there is sophomore Aidan Wilde, who led the league as a freshman in batting last year. He hit had 36 hits and hit .537 with 21 RBI and was selected as the HockomockSports.com Underclassman of the Year. Junior Blake Hill has batted .360 over the past two years and will also be a key part of the Scarlet Hawks pitching staff.

Junior Alex Macek will be one of the more experienced pitchers in the Davenport and will be relied upon as Milford tries to replace Griffin Lynch and Alex Croteau. Brian Ireland, who also is the starting third baseman, will also get innings for Milford this season.

OLIVER AMES

2016 Record: 15-7
2016 Finish: Reached D2 South Quarterfinal
Coach: Leo Duggan

Losing arguably the two top players in the league will be tough for Oliver Ames but the Tigers have been the class of the league in recent years and have reloaded year after year.

Oliver Ames has won six straight league titles but this season might be the biggest challenge. Hockomock MVP and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Brendan Welch is off at SNHU now and Mike Ferrara, who set the single season hit record for the Tigers, is out at Worcester State.

However, Leo Duggan has infielder Chris Romero back to lead OA after batting .474 last year, good for fourth in the league. Romero gets it done at the plate, in the field and on the bases – stealing 18 bases last year. Romero will be joined by Josh Minuskin, who saw time all over the field last year and will settle in behind the plate in 2016.

Ryan Adams will be another key piece, playing in 18 games last year and batting .404 with 10 RBI. Sophomore Matt Muir also returns after a standout freshman year. Sam Burr, Kevin Geary, Mitchell Goulet and Nick Zwerle should all see some innings on the mound this season.

Sharon

2015 Record: 6-14
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Kee Arguimbau

For the first time in nearly a half a century, there will be a new head coach for the Sharon Eagles baseball team. After 44 years at the helm, Joel Peckham retired after last season and assistant Kee Arguimbau has taken the reigns.

Senior Isaac Miley will be a leader that Arguimbau will rely on all over the place. He’s been on varsity since his sophomore year and is returns as the starting shortstop this season and will be one of the program’s top pitchers.

Senior Mark Botaish will also see a lot of time on the mound and will man third base when he’s not pitching. Arguimbau noted Botaish’s strong junior season and is hoping that will be built on this year. Andrew Filipkowski is back in the outfield for his third season and will be relied upon to get the offense started from the leadoff spot.

Junior Jake Marglous is back at catcher again this season and classmate Aiden Arnold is back to man first base. Arnold was also one of the Eagles’ top hitters last season and will help pace the offense this year. Arguimbau also expect contributions from Rob Bayha, Mike Dumont, Jordan Chabot, Ryan Crooks and Spencer Singer.

Stoughton

2015 Record: 9-11
2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Mike Armour

The Black Knights came up just short of the postseason last year but return a strong core and are poised to punch their ticket to the playoffs in 2016.

“With a mix of experience and youth, we are looking to field a competitive team this season that should be able to compete with anybody,” head coach Mike Armour said.

Jake Gibbs has been one of the top players in the league the last two seasons and will look to do the same during his senior year behind the plate. Junior Ryan Sullivan showed a lot on the mound last season and will see a lot of innings along with juniors Justin Hutchinson and Nico Parmeggiani and senior Barry Cooke.

Armour is looking for Doug Seaman to take on an expanded role during his senior season after being limited to just hitting last season. Junior Jack Connelly will man first base for the Black Knights while Joe Piana will see time at third base. Expect Chris McNulty, Nick Quattrucci, Matt Gallagher, Luke Johnson, Michael Batte to all see time in the field while Jared Maher will log some innings on the mound.

Ripley, Eagles Hold Off Milton and Advance

CANTON, Mass. – Junior guard Ricardo Ripley started Monday night’s Div. 2 South preliminary round game fast with 10 points in the opening quarter to help Sharon build a solid lead and he finished it strong with eight points in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles held off a late Milton charge.

Ripley finished the game with 20 points and seven rebounds and helped lead Sharon to a 56-45 victory over the Wildcats in a “home” game that was forced to be played in Canton because Sharon High’s gym had been taken over for Tuesday’s presidential primary.

The gym seemed to suit Ripley and the Eagles fine in the opening quarter. Andrew Filipkowski knocked down a pair of threes to give Sharon the 7-4 lead and then Ripley started to get going. He hit a pair from beyond the arc and added a tough finish in traffic, as Sharon led 20-13 after one.

“We’ve had a lot of conversations with Ricardo throughout the year about how he’s going to be the engine that drives us,” said Sharon coach Andrew Ferguson, “and he got it going early, making his layups, attacking the basket. There weren’t a lot of people on the floor who could guard him.”

The second quarter was all about the defense. Buoyed by the Sharon cheering section at their back, the Eagles held Milton to just three point and no made field goals in the second quarter. Peter Banks (six points, 10 rebounds, two blocks) asserted himself in the middle along with Mitchell Sirota, who each scored four in the second.

Ferguson explained, “We kind of challenged Peter, who hasn’t played well in the last couple of weeks, to give us something that he was giving us in the middle of the season and he responded to that defensively and especially on the glass.”

Leading by 15 at the half, Sharon knew that it could not let its guard down against a Wildcats team that had the potential to put points up in a hurry. Jamaurie Coakley scored four of his team-high 12 in the third and Sam Ferrara scored five of his seven, but the Wildcats could not get any closer than 10 and went into the fourth down 41-27 after a big corner three by Lowerre.

“I hate taking him off the court,” said Ferguson of Lowerre, “and whenever I do he says, ready whenever you need me. To have a guy like that who’s always ready to play, always ready to make a good decision, will rebound, play defense, he makes our team tough to play against.”

The fourth quarter is when Milton made its move. Eddie Hassell knocked the first of his two threes in the quarter to cut the lead to single digits but Ripley answered back with a drive to the hoop to make it 45-34. Christian Reddick buried a three for Milton but once again Ripley responded for the Eagles.

Ferguson said, “They stepped up their defensive intensity and…yeah, Ricardo, he answered the bell. That’s what he has to do…We plan on playing a couple more games this year, hopefully he can keep doing that.”

A Ferrara basket cut the lead to nine and Aiden Johnson followed with a three that got Milton to within six, the closest it had been since the first quarter. Lowerre (16 points, 10 rebounds) followed it with a pair from the line and layup on the break after a long outlet by Ripley. Hassell hit another long-range shot, but the Eagles closed the game 4-6 from the line to seal the win.

“We knew that if they got going shooting it could pose a problem for us. We built up enough of a lead that we could withstand it late in the fourth quarter,” Ferguson said.

There were times when it felt as though Sharon should have been up by a lot more, but in the end the Eagles held off Milton’s charge and gained experience in how to close out a playoff game.

“If we hadn’t turned the ball over as much as we did then we could’ve been in a little better position,” Ferguson admitted, “but our defense was great, guys coming off the bench played great. That was a total team victory.”

Sharon (12-9), the No. 15 seed, advances to face No. 2 seed Whitman-Hanson on Wednesday night.

CANTON

2014-2015 Record: 5-15
2014-2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Ryan Gordy
The Bulldogs have a good amount of talent with experience returning this season and have added some key young pieces and head coach Ryan Gordy is hoping that combination will be a recipe for success this season.
Senior captains Rishi Jambunathan, Woanyen Mahn and Ben O’Neill all got plenty of experience last year and will be relied upon in getting the younger players involved. Griffin Jerrier, who was a strong rebounder last year, is also back and will help the Bulldogs in the paint.
“We are a team that has a nice mix of veterans and rookies, we have some athleticism, a good work ethic and IQ for the game,” Gordy said. “I would say we are relatively deep this year with 11 guys who can give quality minutes at the varsity level. Our biggest weakness is that this roster is unproven, and we need to learn how to execute in big moments to win games.”

FOXBORO

2014-2015 Record: 15-8
2014-2015 Finish: Reached D2 South Semifinal
Coach: Jon Gibbs
When it comes to talent coming back, Foxboro is near the top of the list with the players they have returning this season. Hockomock League All Stars Alex DuBrow and Robby Lowey are both back for their senior seasons and will look to lead the Warriors to another deep postseason run.
Along with DuBrow and Lowey, Foxboro has junior Mark Clagg (third year of varsity), Andrew Block and Jonathan Carnino all back this season. Sophomore Joe Morrison was brought up at the end of last year and the Warriors got transfer Jason Procaccini from Nobles and he could emerge as one of the Foxboro’s top scoring options. Head coach Jon Gibbs will be relying on experience and depth to try take the next step this year.
“We have some good pieces offensively and should be able to score in a variety of ways, so as long as we stay unselfish, we should be able to put some points on the scoreboard,” Gibbs said. “Ultimately, our success will be determined by how big of a commitment we make to defense and rebounding.”

MILFORD

2014-2015 Record: 2-18
2014-2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: Paul Seaver
After just two wins in head coach Paul Seaver’s first year, the Scarlet Hawks are looking to take a big step forward in the 2015-2016 season. With nearly everyone back, Milford is in prime position to pick up more victories this season.
Dwight Anderson, a Hockomock League honorable mention last year, is back for his senior season, junior sharpshooter Nate Davila is back, junior Zack Tamagni will be back running the point and senior Dimitry Torres is a player that can make an impact at both ends of the court. Sophomore Kayden Kelley saw some time in the second half of the season last year and should provide good length and size in the post.
“We return 10 of 14 guys from last year’s team, which was the youngest in the league,” Seaver said. “This group had a terrific offseason, coming together both on and off the court, and helping to rebuild the culture within Milford basketball. Some of our strengths would include our improved teamwork and general awareness of working with each other after having played together so much over the last year.”

OLIVER AMES

2014-2015 Record: 20-4
2014-2015 Finish: Reached D2 South Final
Coach: Don Byron
After reaching the D2 South Final last season, the Tigers will have a to overcome a lot to try and get back there this season. All five starters (Carney, Handy, Kyne, Flynn, Welch) from last year’s team graduated as well as a key role player off the bench (Kelley) and another junior Franklin Holgate transferred to Nobles.
But the goal hasn’t changed for Oliver Ames as the Tigers will be making a push for the postseason again this year. Senior Tim Kelley will be one of the Tigers’ go-to options on the offensive end of the court and junior Carter Evin will provide some size in the post to give OA options on offense and defense. Connor Moroney will also be a source of scoring while Shawn Cardoza is another post player with some good experience.
“We graduated a strong senior class last year but with a nucleus of five returning players who played in a number of high pressure games last year we are optimistic,” head coach Don Byron said. “We also will add seven players who were key players on our successful JV and freshmen teams last year.”

SHARON

2014-2015 Record: 11-10
2014-2015 Finish: Reached D2 South First Round
Coach: Andrew Ferguson
Similar to Foxboro, Sharon is near the top of the list when it comes to returning players back this year. First year head coach Andrew Ferguson has eight returning varsity players at his disposal as the Eagles will look to not only make the playoffs, but try to get further than they did this past season.
Seniors Matt Lowerre, Tyler Smith, Bryce Smith, Mitchell Sirota, Andrew Filipkowski, David Roelke, and Michael Zola are all back for another year while juniors Ricardo Ripley and Peter Banks both saw time last year. Ferguson will be relying on that depth to try and challenge Foxboro in the Davenport title race. Although the Eagles don’t have a ton of size, they make up for it in athleticism.
“We are very excited to begin the season, and expect a lot from a very experienced roster,” Ferguson said. “Our roster will allow us to be very versatile as we try to create mismatches on both ends of the floor.”

STOUGHTON

2014-2015 Record: 8-12
2014-2015 Finish: Missed playoffs
Coach: John Gallivan
There are a lot of questions heading into the season for Stoughton but at the same time, there is a lot of optimism among the Black Knights.
Brandon Teixeira is back for his third year on varsity and is among the best shooters in the league. He will be relied on to captain the team on both ends of the court while junior Ryan Sullivan – who saw minutes last season – should see a bigger role in 2015-2016.
Beyond those two, head coach John Gallivan will be looking for others to step up and emerge as options on offense and as consistent players on defense. Sophomore Cam Andrews could be one of those players after seeing some minutes during his freshman year and junior Cam Gomes could provide some size for the Black Knights.
“There’s a big difference between the games that start at 5:00 and the one’s that start at 6:30,” Gallivan said of JV to varsity. “We have a lot of guys that haven’t played the 6:30 ones yet. We don’t have a ton of size but we can run and we’re hoping to make teams play our style.”
