King Philip freshman Evan Regan has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 16 through Oct. 22. Regan is the seventh player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year.
Regan completed an impressive rookie campaign by finishing as the co-medalist at the annual Hockomock Golf Championships, held last week at Foxboro Country Club. Reagn shot a low round of 79, tied with Mansfield’s Nate McClean. KP, which tied with Franklin for the league title during the regular season, took home the team title, shooting a combined 251 to beat the Hornets by seven strokes.
“Evan’s score on the front 9 was consistent with his group but he found his groove and shot a 2-under on the back nine, which set the tone for the rest of the morning,” said King Philip head coach Myles McHugh. “Initially we were a little concerned because because Evan is a long ball hitter but also hits the ball high with a strong wind, I was not expecting him to go so low. But Evan is a member at Walpole Country Club which also has extremely fast greens. We knew that whoever putted the best would be able to score at Foxborough and that is one area where Evan excels.”
On a difficult day, with the wind gusting throughout the round, and at arguably the league’s toughest course Regan was able to put together a solid round in his first championship event. It wasn’t an easy front nine for the freshman, who shot a 45 on the way out (only one golfer broke 40 on the front), but he came back with a 34 on the back nine, which was the lowest nine of the day. After three pars on the front nine, Regan started the back with five straight pars before a birdie on the par four 15th. He rebounded from a bogey on 16 by birdieing the par three 17 and finished his round by notching his third birdie of the day on the 502-yard, par five 18th.
