Milford senior Colby Pires has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Feb. 16 through Feb. 22. Pires is the 22nd player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2019-20 school year and the 11th for the winter season.

Pires was instrumental in Milford winning a pair of games last week to close out the regular season and head into the playoffs with momentum. He recorded a career-high 41 points in a win against Tantasqua and then hit the game-winning shot in the closing seconds against Wellesley to secure the title at the annual Scarlet Hawks Classic.

“Colby has been everything and more for this program over the past three years,” said Milford head coach Paul Seaver. “A three year varsity player, a two time captain, a two year starter, he has tirelessly put it in the work, time and effort every single day. He’s seeing that hard work directly pay off from both an individual and team standpoint and is playing the best basketball of his career heading into the postseason of his senior campaign. I am so proud of him.”

On Monday night against Tantasqua, Pires was on fire right from the opening tip. He knocked down three shots from beyond the arc and had 14 points in the first quarter. After scoring eight points in the second, Pires knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the third and closed the game with 10 points in the fourth quarter. He scored two-thirds of the team’s 67 points in the win and added eight rebounds.

The senior guard added 11 points in the tournament final against Wellesley, including the two most important. He hit a turnaround jumper with 3.5 seconds on the clock to put Milford ahead 47-45. The Hawks added two more at the line to win the title and deny the Raiders a playoff spot. Pires is averaging more than 12 points per game for the Hawks, who host Westboro in the Div. 2 Central playoffs on Friday.

The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the HockomockSports.com staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
