In the final event of the 2016 HockomockSports.com Charity Basketball Classic, North Attleboro junior Brent Doherty was the last man standing in the annual Three Point Contest.
Doherty reached the finals when he sank 16 of his 25 shots in the opening round. Foxboro’s Alex DuBrow connected on a round-high 17 three pointers in the opening round to secure his spot in the final. DuBrow and Doherty squared off head to head, shooting at the same time on opposite ends of the court. Doherty hit on 15 threes and DuBrow sank his final corner three to tie him at 15.
In an overtime round (30 seconds), Doherty took home the hardware by hitting eight three pointers. Both Doherty and DuBrow broke the record for most threes made in a final round, edging out Ryan Boulter’s record of 14 in 2015.
Doherty now holds the record for most threes made in one event with 39, eclipsing Boulter’s record of 34 set last year. The North Attleboro guard now also has the record for most threes made in the event for a career with 50 after hitting 11 in 2015. Taunton junior Tommy MacLean jumped into third all time in threes made in the event with 37.

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Through the first 16 minutes, there was virtually no separation between #16 Oliver Ames and #17 Plymouth North.
But through the final two quarters, the Tigers turned a tie game into a double-digit lead and picked up a 69-50 win over the Eagles.
OA surrendered 18 points in the opening quarter but the defense improved in each quarter. The Tigers limited Plymouth North to 13 points in the second quarter, 11 points in the third quarter and just eight points in the final quarter.
“I think the biggest thing is what we got a pretty good defensive contribution in the second half,” Oliver Ames coach Don Byron said. “Rayshon Ward got off and running there in the first half. I thought Shawn Cardoza, being the primary guy, did a nice job of making him work a little harder to get his looks. That was big for us.”
Ward, a 6’6 senior for the Eagles, had nearly half of the team’s points in the first half (15) but Cardoza and OA limited him to just five points in the second half.
The majority of the separation came in the third quarter. With a two point advantage (37-35), OA closed out the remaining five and a half minutes with a 18-7 run. Senior Tim Kelley got the run going while Carter Evin and Shawn Cardoza each converted a field goal in the paint and Dylan Mahoney drained a three. Mahoney added a pair of free throws and a strong take to the rim and sophomore Jack Spillane came off the bench to drain a corner three in the final seconds to put OA up 55-42 at the end of the quarter.
“We hit a couple of timely shots, guys coming off bench hit shots too,” Byron said “When they pressed I thought we attacked it well and got ourselves in positive number situations. We didn’t always make the correct decision but we got into attack mode and that was good.”
Mahoney and Evin opened the fourth quarter with back to back baskets to extend the lead to 17. A quick spurt from the Eagles cut it to 12 but that would be the closest they would get. A two minute scoreless stretch kept OA’s lead at 14 and when Plymouth North finally found the bucket, junior Nick Welch answered for OA.
The Tigers didn’t allow Plymouth North to score over the final three minutes of play to seal the win.
While OA had a comfortable lead for the majority of the second half, the advantage might have been bigger if the Tigers had converted at a higher rate from the free throw line. OA went 0/8 to start the game and finished 5/16.
“Foul shooting is so critical,” Byron said. “We were like 0 for 7 right out of the gates. You can’t really get a good control of the game unless you hit a decent percentage so that was part of it. There were some time situations I would have liked to play better but all and all I’m really happy with what went on tonight.”
Evin finished with a team-high 19 points along with four rebounds, Mahoney scored 17 points and had seven rebounds and Cardoza had eight points to go along with 14 rebounds and a solid defensive performance.
Mahoney had 11 of his 17 points coming in the second half (including nine in the vital third quarter).
“When he attacks the basket, he can be tough to guard,” Byron said of Mahoney, just a junior. “He had some matchups that were favorable I thought. He has a great first step and he’s athletic at the rim. We try to tell him to play inside out, try to play at the rim first then work your way out to the three ball. We want him to be a slasher who has a jump shot and not the reverse of that. When he does that, he’s hard to guard.”
Oliver Ames finished with a monstrous 54-30 advantage on the glass. Connor Maroney had nine rebounds along with six assists, Tim Kelley had seven points and five rebounds and Nick Welch had seven assists and four rebounds.
The Tigers (11-10) advance to the First Round on the MIAA D2 South bracket. Oliver Ames boys basketball will travel to #1 Bishop Feehan in a rematch of last year’s D2 South final. STOUGHTON, Mass. – It was win or go home for the Oliver Ames boys basketball team on Monday night.
Paced by a career-high 28 points from junior Carter Evin and two 20-plus point quarters, Oliver Ames notched a 74-55 win over Stoughton and punched its ticket to the postseason.
With the win, the Tigers extended it to 13 straight playoff appearances.
“I couldn’t be happier with what’s going on here,” Oliver Ames head coach Don Byron said. “Coming back this year the highest kid [returning] on the food chain was [Shawn] Cardoza and there were a couple of kids who backed up others and had to work really hard to get on the floor. To think that they are here right now, that’s not typical. There will be teams that sneak in on the last night that are flawed but I think we’re playing pretty well. We’re finding multiple ways to score, we’re getting contributions from more kids as we go along and we’re starting to see them mature right in front of us.”
Stoughton rallied to take a lead in the early the second quarter via an 11-4 run but the Tigers dominated the final five minutes. OA scored 21 points the rest of the way with six guys contributing to the run. Evin scored six in the stretch with Nick Welch and Dylan Mahoney each adding five and Shawn Cardoza, Tim Kelley and Connor Maroney each chipping in. OA took a 42-33 lead in into the break.
The third quarter was better defensively for both sides with OA holding a slight edge, 11-9. A pair of threes from Jared Costa-Haywood brought the Black Knights within seven but OA answered with a free throw from Evin and a corner three from Kelley to push the lead back to double-digits.
“This didn’t just fall together, the kids really worked at it in the offseason and put a lot of time in,” Byron said. “It’s nice to see it pay off. Having so many seniors last year, these guys didn’t have as many opportunities as before as you do in a typical year.”
The Tigers closed the door early in the fourth quarter. Nick Welch drained a three to open the quarter, Evin secured an offensive rebound and putback and then pulled up for a corner three and Mahoney’s layup capped a 10-2 to open the first two minutes of the final quarter.
“They don’t want to go home,” Byron said. “They’re a close group, they like playing with each other. They sincerely like each other. You could sense that they weren’t in any hurry to get out of here.
“We’ve played a lot of teams tough like Franklin, Foxboro, and Sharon. The league helps us out in games like this. I don’t think we’re a typical 10-10 team, I think we’re a little better than that. The league will make you rise up to what you have to do. We’ve had 10-10 teams before where we were covering some stuff. We’re not covering quite as much with this group.”
Midway through the final quarter the Tigers built a 20 point lead and were able to pull their starters with a couple minutes to play in the game.
“We’re a streaky team and sometimes those streaks are good and sometimes they’re bad,” Stoughton head coach John Gallivan said. “When we looked at the shot chart at halftime, they were getting whatever they wanted in the paint. We just didn’t defend. The goal was the make it hard for them to score and we didn’t. OA has absolutely come a long way in terms of their offense this season but to give up 42 points in the first half is very disillusioning. The kids played better defense in the third quarter but we need to combine that with scoring and we just didn’t.
“Hats off to them, they finished the season strong and deserve to go to the tournament. They’ll be a tough out for someone.”
Despite a .500 record, the Tigers have been one of the top defensive teams in the league and entered Monday’s contest allowing 54.9 points per game, third best in the Hockomock. Beyond allowing 20 points in the second quarter, OA limited Stoughton to 13 in the first and fourth and nine in the third quarter.
“We’ve been pretty good defensively,” Byron said. “We seem to get a kid every year we can put in that lock down position. Charlie Ryan this year has been great, he plays everyone from the one to the four, wherever we feel we have to give attention too. His brother [St. Clair] was a terrific defender too. It’s nice, you don’t have to do all the scheming to shut down one player. You can just put your guy on him and feel comfortable.”
Evin led all scorers with 28 points, completing the double-double with 10 rebounds. Mahoney added 15 points, Welch had 11 points and Kelley added 10 points.
“He’s had an unbelievable second half [of the season],” Byron said of Evin. “He’s another one that was on the team last year but was 10 or 11 in the rotation. He’s a talented kid, he’s got good skills and athleticism. His big thing was transitioning from a nice pierce to being the guy. He’s really done that well over the second half of the season, he’s been terrific.”
Costa-Haywood led the Black Knights with 17 points, Cam Gomes had 12 points and Cam Andrews chipped in with 10 points. Senior captain Nick Quattrucci hauled in seven rebounds.

Sam Goldberg had 12 points and seven rebounds, Christian Weber added 11 points and six assists and Max Boen had nine points and five assists. Mansfield head coach Mike Vaughan won his 200th career game.
Canton, 48 @ Milford, 71 – Final – The Scarlet Hawks won their fifth game in the last six to clinch a playoff berth. Dimitry Torres led Milford with 23 points while Dwight Anderson added 16 points, Jack DeSantis chipped in with a career-high 10 points and Josh Andonian finished seven points. Canton freshman Devin Foster had a career-high 16 points and sophomore Tony Harris added 15 points.
Sharon, 73 @ Foxboro, 84 – Final (OT) – Jason Procaccini scored a game-high 24 points as the Warriors held on after a rally from the Eagles. Rob Lowey added 14 points while Alex DuBrow, Jonathan Carnino and Mark Clagg all chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Franklin, 77 @ North Attleboro, 39 – Final – Freshman Jay Dieterle dropped in a team-high 19 points as the Panthers claimed their first league title since 2012. With the win, Franklin won a share of the Kelley-Rex title with Mansfield. Sophomore Connor Peterson had 12 points and senior Tim Prunier added 10 points.
Oliver Ames, 74 @ Stoughton, 55 – Final – Junior Carter Evin scored a career-high 28 points and pulled in 10 rebounds. Dylan Mahoney added 15 points, Nick Welch had 11 points and Tim Kelley added 10 points for OA. Lily Sykes led the Warriors with 16 points while Ashley Sampson added 13 points, Grace Tamulionis had 12 points and Carolynn Will finished with 10 points. Sharon was led by Alyssa Piazza with 20 points and four steals, while Charlotte Ransom had seven points, all in the fourth quarter. North Attleboro, 45 @ Franklin, 54 – Final
Attleboro, 43 @ Mansfield, 56 – Final – The Hornets clinched the Kelley-Rex division title with the win. It is the second in the program’s history. Jen Peel led the way with 18 points and five assists. Meg Hill added 11 points and 15 rebounds and Juliana Newell scored 12 for Mansfield. Attleboro was led by Sarah Deyo, who finished with 15 points. Sam Pierce added 10 for the Bombardiers.

North Attleboro, 39 @ Attleboro, 52 – Final – Sarah Deyo notched her first career triple-double, scoring 15 points, hauling in 12 rebounds and recording 10 blocks.

MIWCA D1 Dual Tournament (Franklin) – Franklin placed fifth overall. The Panthers beat BC High (38-28) but lost to St. John’s Prep (41-21). Franklin finished the meet with wins over Plymouth South (40-27) and Framingham (34-26).
MIWCA D2 Dual Meet Tournament (Milford, North Attleboro, Oliver Ames) – North Attleboro continued its very strong season by winning the D2 Dual Meet title. The Rocketeers beat Keefe Tech (68-6), Winchester (40-27) and Nashoba (51-21) to reach the finals. In the finals, North Attleboro took down Central Catholic, 39-22, to claim the title. OA was seeded 6th and opened with a win over Dracut (52-12) but suffered a loss to #3 Natick (60-18). Casey Bellevue went 2-0 on the day with a pair of pins and Luke Cullen also went 2-0. OA finished the season with a 20-8 record, a program record for both wins and least losses.
Scituate Quad (Canton) – Canton beat host Scituate (39-29) but lost to Hingham (59-18) and Walpole (47-30).

Franklin, 55 @ Sharon, 41 – Final – Franklin turned a four point deficit at halftime into a nine point lead by the end of the third quarter. Milford, 58 @ Franklin, 74 – Final – Final – Milford had a lead midway through the third quarter but the Panthers outscored the Scarlet Hawks 36-18 over the final 12 minutes of play. Franklin freshman Jay Dieterle tied a career-high with 24 points while sophomore Connor Peterson chipped in 14 points. Milford’s Dwight Anderson had 19 points and Anthony Arcudi added 11 points.
Oliver Ames, 57 @ King Philip, 62 – Final – Tom Madden might have scored just eight points but KP head coach Matt Coute said they all came at a big time, including a fourth quarter three. Madden added a career best 10 rebounds as the Warriors rallied from a halftime deficit. Noah Goodwin led the Warriors with 18 points and Seth Sullivan added 16 points. Oliver Ames’ Carter Evin had a game-high 21 points and Tim Kelley added 13 points.
Sharon, 62 @ Taunton, 59 – Final – Up three, the Eagles elected to foul to send the Tigers to the line instead of giving them a chance to tie. Taunton missed the front end of the bonus and Sharon was able to hold on. Sharon had 11 players score with junior Peter Banks leading the way with 12 points, Matt Lowerre adding 11 points and Michael Zola adding nine points. Taunton’s Quan Roberson had a game-high 18 points while Tommy MacLean and Jose Mercado each added 11 points.

Franklin, 68 @ Milford, 42 – Final – The Panthers broke the game open with a 24-6 second quarter. Lauren Rudolph was Franklin’s top scorer with 14. Aubrie Kutil added 12 points for the Panthers and Olivia Adiletto had 10. Milford’s Kate Irwin finished with 13 points.
King Philip, 27 @ Oliver Ames, 40 – Final – Kayla Raymond paced the Tigers with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds and senior Kaitlyn McCarthy scored 12 points. With the win, OA coach Laney Clement-Holbrook broke the state record for career victories with her 634th win. KP was led by Julia Leroux with eight points and Christina Hathaway with seven.
Mansfield, 51 @ Stoughton, 36 – Final – Meg Hill and Caroline Maher were the top scorers for the Hornets, each with 17 points. Alecia Quinones had 16 points and nine rebounds for Stoughton.
Taunton, 30 @ Sharon, 43 – Final – The Eagles broke open a tight game by scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory. Charlotte Ransom led the way for Sharon with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Shira Stoller had nine points and four assists and Veronica Wallace added nine as well.

Attleboro, 57 @ Sharon, 73 – Final – Attleboro cut a 10-point Sharon lead at halftime down to two in the third quarter but the Eagles were able to pull away. Sharon hit 12 three pointers between three players – senior Matt Lowerre hit five, sophomore Jimmy Fitzhenry hit four and senior Tyler Smith had three. Fitzhenry finished with a game-high 20 points and Lowerre had 17 points. Attleboro junior Jake Dunkley had 19 points and nine rebounds and sophomore Nate Douglas chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.
King Philip, 66 @ Canton, 53 – Final – King Philip stormed out to a 20-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Senior Ben Smith his six three pointers for a game-high 18 points, freshman Kyle Layman had 15 points and eight rebounds, junior Noah Goodwin had 13 points and junior Pharoah Davis had 12 points. Canton senior Griffin Jerrier scored a team-high 13 points for the Bulldogs.
Mansfield, 51 @ Foxboro, 69 – Final – Foxboro used an 11-0 run in the middle of the second quarter to create separation while its defense prevent Mansfield from gathering any momentum offensively. Foxboro senior Alex DuBrow scored a game-high 22 points and had eight rebounds, senior Rob Lowey had 16 points and eight rebounds and senior Jason Procaccini added 14 points and five rebounds. Mansfield junior Sam Goldberg had 10 points to lead the Hornets.
Franklin, 83 @ Stoughton, 63 – Final – The Panthers held a six point lead at halftime (41-35) as the two teams combined for over 75 points in the first half. Franklin had a 23 point third quarter and added 19 more points in the final quarter. Sophomore Connor Peterson had a game-high 16 points while senior Tim Prunier and freshman Jay Dieterle each added 15 points for Franklin. Stoughton senior Brandon Teixeira had a team-high 14 points for the Black Knights.
Taunton, 62 @ Milford, 50 – Final – Milford held a four point lead at halftime and at the end of the third quarter but Taunton won the fourth quarter 29-13 to get the win. Taunton junior Tommy MacLean scored 20 points in the win for the Tigers. Milford sophomore Kayden Kelley had 14 points and 15 rebounds, Dimitry Torres added 11 points and Dwight Anderson had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Scarlet Hawks.
North Attleboro, 74 @ Oliver Ames, 70 – Final – Brent Doherty scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Rocketeers. North Attleboro held a 20 point lead at halftime (44-24) but Oliver Ames stormed back with 25 points in the third quarter and 13 more in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied 62-62-. Doherty connected on seven three pointers and went 3/4 from the free throw line in overtime. Sophomore Mario Bresko finished with seven points, including a key three pointer in overtime. Junior Jonny Friberg scored a career-high 18 points and had 10 rebounds for North. Oliver Ames’ Carter Evin scored 21 of his career-high 26 points in the second half to help OA get back into it. Canton, 38 @ King Philip, 56 – Final – The Warriors turned the game around with a 22-4 second quarter. Shannon O’Connor was the top scorer for KP with 10. Sam Madden and Julia Lerouix each scored nine for the Warriors. Canton was led by Emma Murphy with nine points.
Foxboro, 45 @ Mansfield, 49 – Final – Jen Peel was Mansfield’s top scorer with 14 points. Juliana Newell added 10 points and pulled in 12 rebounds and Meg Hill grabbed 14 boards. Cassidy Harrison had a game-high 19 points to lead the Warriors.
Stoughton, 35 @ Franklin, 55 – Final – Olivia Adiletto was the top scorer for Franklin with 13 points. Lauren Rudolph added 11 for the Panthers, who had 10 players on the score sheet. Stoughton was led by Alecia Quinones with 11 points.
Milford, 40 @ Taunton, 44 – Final – The Tigers rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Milford 14-7, to pick up their first win of the season. Alyssa Gibson led the way for Taunton with 13 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Wade added nine and Kia Pate had 10 rebounds. Milford was led by Katie Irwin with 12 points and Nicole Dahlgren added 10.
Oliver Ames, 49 @ North Attleboro, 52 – Final – The Rocketeers were led by forwards Caroline Collard and Emily Peters who combined for 24 points. Julia Feid added 13 for North. The Tigers were led by Kayla Raymond with 15 points.
Sharon, 35 @ Attleboro, 75 – Final– Emily Houle scored 33 points and added seven steals to pace the Bombardiers to a big win. Tommy MacLean added 11 points and Jose Mercado had 10 points. Attleboro’s Jake Dunkley had nine points and three rebounds and Lucas Boucicaut also had nine points. Kyle Murphy pulled in 10 rebounds for the Bombardiers.
Canton, 42 @ Sharon, 47 – Final – Sophomore Malik Lorquet made a big splash in his first full varsity game with nine points and 10 rebounds. Junior Adam Banks also scored nine points for the Eagles. Woanyen Mahn and Rishi Jambunathan each scored nine points for Canton.
Foxboro, 54 @ Oliver Ames, 50 – Final – Foxboro built a seven point lead by halftime and held on in the second half. Senior Jason Procaccini led with 18 points with classmate Alex DuBrow chipping in with 17 points. Oliver Ames junior Carter Even had 17 points and seniors Shawn Cardoza and Tim Kelley each had 12 points.
Franklin, 60 @ Mansfield, 57 – Final – Freshman Jay Dieterle hit a three with 1:34 left to put Franklin ahead for good. The Panthers, which led by as much as 22, had to stave off a rally from Mansfield over the third and fourth quarters. Franklin sophomore Connor Peterson scored a career-high 23 points and had seven rebounds, Tim Prunier added 15 points and five assists, sophomore Paul Mahon added eight points and six rebounds and Dieterle had six assists to go with five points. Matt Ehrlich had 16 points and five rebounds for Mansfield and Max Boen added 11 points.
North Attleboro, 47 @ King Philip, 53 – Final – Juniors Will Weir and Noah Goodwin each scored 13 points for King Philip with senior Ben Smith adding 10 points and junior Pharaoh Davis netted 10 points. North Attleboro junior Brent Doherty scored a career-high 24 points for the Rocketeers.
Milford, 60 @ Stoughton, 77 – Final – Stoughton senior Brandon Teixeira logged his league-leading sixth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Black Knights enjoyed a strong shooting night from the floor. Sharon, 41 @ Canton, 43 – Final – Meaghan Hunter led the way for the Bulldogs with 17 points and Emma Murphy added 13, including nine in the fourth quarter. Alyssa Piazza was the top scorer for Sharon with 14 points and Ashley Mukasa added 10.
Oliver Ames, 53 @ Foxboro, 38 – Final – The Tigers had the lead throughout in a key Davenport Division matchup. The Warriors got within one in the third quarter but OA answered with a three to keep the lead. Sophomore Kayla Raymond notched her first double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Hannah Carroll added 10 points and Francesca Calabraro had eight points and nine rebounds.
Mansfield, 51 @ Franklin, 48 – Final – Meg Hill was the top scorer for the Hornets with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jen Peel added 10 points (eight in the first half) and eight assists for the Hornets and Jackie Carchedi scored nine points (eight in the fourth quarter). Lauren Rudolph led the Panthers with 11 points (nine in the third quarter) and Aubrie Kutil had eight points and nine rebounds.
King Philip, 34 @ North Attleboro, 49 – Final – North Attleboro got 10 points apiece from Julia Feid and Emily Haskell. KP was led by Sam Madden and Riley Dalzell, who each scored seven points.
