Milford, 2 vs. Hopedale, 0 – Final – Milford scored once in each half to pick up a win at home over non-league rival Hopedale. Jordan Borges picked up where he left off from his game-winner against Canton, putting the Hawks up 1-0 in the first half on an assist from Leo Coelho. In the second half, junior Walisson de Oliveira doubled the lead on an assist from Joao Vitor Neiva. Lucas Caetano had a strong game defensively and Cam Doherty recorded the shutout in net.

Girls Soccer
North Attleboro, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – North Attleboro won the Blue-Red Cup behind two goals and an assist from Ashlyn Gaulin. Alex Moulson was also on the board for the Rocketeers, who got a team-record 10th shutout from goalie Emma Noreck. Morgan Silver, Bri Westcott, Sam Hawkins, Lydia Hershey, Liz Smahi and Olivia Bishop all had strong games defensively in front of Noreck.

Stoughton, 0 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Sharon scored with 11 minutes to play to earn a win over Stoughton. The Black Knights thought they had the equalizer in the final minute but the goal was waved off for offside. Stoughton coach Tara Daniels said Nicole Weir had an outstanding game defensively for the Black Knights.

Mansfield, 1 @ Foxboro, 5 – Final

Milford @ Bellingham, 3:30

Stoughton, 1 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final – Grace Cole, Jessica Stratham, and Hannah Alarie each scored once as North Attleboro earned a win at home over visiting Stoughton. Alanna McCormick scored for the Black Knights.

King Philip, 5 @ Algonquin, 0 – Final – King Philip built a 2-0 lead by halftime and finished strong with three goals in the second half. Meghan MacDonald (from Dana Truini) opened the scoring just over a minute into the game and then set up Abby Nixon five minutes later to go up 2-0. In the second half, Nicole Connor and Alli Meehan set each other up three minutes apart to increase the lead to 4-0. Claire Lawlor capped the scoring with 10 minutes to play on a feed from MacDonald.

Volleyball
Attleboro, 0 @ North Attleboro, 3 – Final

Canton, 3 vs. Quincy, 1 – Final – Canton fended off a comeback attempt from the Presidents of Quincy High, earning a 3-1 win at home (25-18, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18). Erin Devine had nine kills and six blocks to pace the Bulldogs at the net while Taylor Harris and Liz Bickett combined for 18 kills. Megan McDonough was amazing on defense with 22 digs and Nicole Brown continued her strong season with 25 assists and 10 digs.

King Philip, 0 @ North Quincy, 3 – Final – King Philip went on the road and suffered a 3-0 setback (21-25, 22-25, 13-25). For the Warriors, Catherine Waldeck had 11 kills and two blocks and Lily Carlow finished with five digs.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ Brockton, 3 – Final – Oliver Ames won the second set to knot the score at 1-1 but Brockton prevailed in the next two sets to get the win (17-25, 25-12, 12-25, 12-25). Jordan Bosse paced OA with 12 digs, eight kills, and a pair of aces. Sadie Homer added 37 digs, Allie Kemp finished with 22 assists, and Jackie Raymond chipped in with six blocks.

Sharon, 3 vs. Dedham, 0 – Final

Stoughton, 3 @ Cardinal Spellman, 0 – Final – Stoughton wrapped up the regular season with a sweep of Spellman. Molly Turner and Delaney Nagel combined for 23 kills and Amaya Morris (six blocks) and Mia Bennett (22 digs) provided strong defense for the Black Knights. Hanna Holden had 10 assists in the win.

Defenses On Top As Mansfield and North End in Draw

MANSFIELD, Mass. – It was a game that felt like a preview of the Div. 1 South tournament, with both teams defending in numbers and chances at a premium. Mansfield and North Attleboro, both defending division champions, demonstrated tough team defense and got timely goalkeeping in a fast-paced, scoreless draw on Wednesday night at Alumni Field.

“That was a good game,” said Mansfield coach Kevin Smith. “It was a state tournament-level game. It was physical, it was fast, and every mistake was punished by both teams.”

North created early chances in the first half. Emma Gaulin was particularly active in the Rocketeeers midfield winning the ball back and pushing North into the attack. A give-and-go with her sister Ashlyn allowed her to run at Emily Vigeant but the Mansfield defender was able to get back in time.

Just a minute later, Lydia Santos lined up a 30-yard free kick that dropped right into the middle of the box but was punched away by Mansfield keeper Lauren Whitman. The rebound fell to Haley Ferrin but her effort went over the bar. Kayla Pasquel played Emma Gaulin in behind on the left side of the box but her shot was saved by a diving Whitman (four saves).

Mansfield also passed the ball well in the opening half and was finding some space behind the North fullbacks. Sydney Mulkern played a ball into Steph Kempon the left edge of the box and her cross bounced off a defender in the box and bounced to Katie Garvin, who hit the volley over the bar.

Kemp had a neat turn in the box to get space for a shot that was blocked on its way to goal by Olivia Bishop. On the ensuing corner, Vigeant nearly curled it directly in, but North goalie Emma Noreck was able to get a fingertip on it. Emma Gaulin nearly opened the scoring a few minutes later but Whitman made the kick save.

Just before halftime, Vigeant again came close from a set piece. This time it was a 50-yard free kick that she put just under the crossbar but Noreck was able to get up and tip it away.

“Emma Noreck had probably her best game,” North coach Bill Wallace said. “At halftime I wanted to pull her because she’s been under the weather all week, but she told me to leave her in.”

The second half was a much cagier 40 minutes, as both teams clamped down in the midfield. Melissa Reef helped out the Hornets back line in limiting the touches for Ashlyn Gaulin and the center back pairing of Mikaela Maughn and Vigeant kept just about everything in front of them. On the other side, Sam Hawkins, the only returning defensive player from last year, and Brieann Westcott were equally tough to beat.

“They just played their hearts out,” Wallace said. “Twice this year we’ve changed what we normally do for teams and the girls reacted great to it. That’s not normally how we play but boy they did it to a ’T’. The longer you keep them off the board, the smaller the goal seems, the more those passes tend to go longer, and that was our intent.”

Mansfield had a good opportunity six minutes after the break when Garvin played Cassidy McMahon into space but Noreck was able to save. Vigeant’s corner found Garvin at the back post but her header was blocked by a host of North defenders.

Alex Moulson had a chance off a North corner but her header went narrowly wide. Kemp reacted first to a loose ball and had a go from 20 yards, just missing the target at the near post.

The best chance to break the deadlock came with 10 minutes to play. Santos slipped Pasquel into space on the right and she crossed to Ashlyn Gaulin in the box but the league’s leading scorer couldn’t get full purchase on her shot and it was saved comfortably by Mansfield’s second keeper, Caty DeMassi.

Wallace remarked, “We’re really happy with the point and now we’re one away from the tournament…Both teams played really strong and that’s a great tournament warm up.”

Mansfield was playing for only the second time in nearly two weeks and there was an element of rust, which North was able to amplify. Smith explained, “Our first touch just wasn’t there. Whether it was the first touch on the pass or on the receive and go, it was just a little too far away from ourselves and their speed and pressure was real intense, so we couldn’t afford that.”

North Attleboro (7-2-3, 6-2-3) will host Stoughton on Friday afternoon. Mansfield (9-0-2, 8-0-2) travels to Attleboro on Friday and then hosts Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) on Saturday.

Sharon, 1 @ Attleboro, 2 – Final – Sharon took the lead early in the second half but Attleboro tied it quickly and found the game-winner late. After the Eagles went up in the 45th minute, the Bombardiers quickly leveled in the 47th minute when Mike Russo scored on a breakaway on a pass from Aidan Lancaster. Eli Araujo scored the game-winner, heading in a pass from Will Halben, to give the Bombardiers two points.

Canton, 6 @ Taunton, 2 – Final – Canton senior Griffin Roach scored a first half hat trick as the Bulldogs rolled to a big win on the road at halftime. Canton built a 4-0 advantage after 40 minutes of work, and then both sides found the back of the net twice in the second half. Roach also had two assists while Paul Corcoran (goal, assist), TJ McCabe (goal assist), Colby Ciffolillo (goal), and Paolo Ruggeri (two assists) all found the scoresheet for Canton.

North Attleboro, 2 @ King Philip, 0 – Final – North Attleboro scored once in each half while keeper Kyle Briere came up big on a pair of corner kicks as the Rocketeers blanked King Philip. Alessandro Gioria scored his first varsity goal on an assist from Alex Pfeffer, giving Big Red a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. Late in the game, Alvaro Calvo iced the game, scoring in the 75th minute on an assist from Joe Hilf. Briere (eight saves) had his seventh shutout of the season.

Stoughton, 0 @ Mansfield, 6 – Final – Stoughton sophomore goalie Nolan Gerome had a spectacular first half, keeping the Hornets scoreless for the opening 40 minutes. But Mansfield’s offense finally broke through early in the second half on its way to a 6-0 win. Luke Savoie scored a second half hat trick (46th, 52nd, and 57th minute) with Luke Devine and Dylan Buchanan earning assists. Senior Ethan Brill-Cass (from Peter Oldow), Raffi Marzella (from Evan Eames), and Sam Nugent (unassisted) each scored in the second half as well.

Attleboro, 3 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Maxine Gordon scored the Sharon goal.

King Philip, 0 @ North Attleboro, 1 – Final – The North Attleboro defense put in a great performance to hold the league’s top attack off the board on Monday. North coach Bill Wallace praised Liz Smahi, Lydia Hershey, Morgan Silver, Olivia Bishop, Sam Hawkins and Brie Westcott for their “smothering defense.” Goalie Emma Noreck kept the clean sheet, including a pair of great saves in the first half. Ashlyn Gaulin scored the game’s only goal late in the opening half off a Haley Ferrin assist and the defense made the goal hold up over the final 40 minutes.

Mansfield @ Stoughton – Postponed to day/time TBD.

Oliver Ames, 5 @ Milford, 1 – Final – Gabi McLaughlin scored a pair of goals to lead the Tigers to a divisional crossover win. Erin Holmberg, Lauren Sellmayer, and Lauren Picanzi also scored goals for OA, while Cassie Probert had the Milford goal. Brianna Gibson had three assists for the Tigers.


Field Hockey
Attleboro, 2 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – Jillian Pagliuca scored the game-winner for the Tigers with 13 minutes remaining in the game. The winning goal was assisted by Alana Tavares. Cierra Bartel and Lauren Torres also scored for Taunton, while Anna Beck and Alex Compton had the Attleboro goals. Taunton coach Liz Hathaway said that Jocelyn Pagliuca and Kathryn Robinson also played well defensively in the win.

North Attleboro, 2 @ Canton, 5 – Final

Sharon, 0 @ Foxboro, 6 – Final

Franklin, 4 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – Hannah Stryke opened the scoring with 10 minutes left in the first, but Franklin scored four times over the next half hour to get control. Sarah Carney tied the game for Franklin and Victoria Quinn scored twice (both assisted by Cassi Ronan) to give Franklin a 3-1 lead. Ronan then scored unassisted in the second half to extend the advantage to 4-1. The Tigers answered back with two goals in two minutes, one by Stryke (assisted by Kayla Lozzi) and the second by Maggie Woods (assisted by Emily Dionne) to cut the lead to just one. OA kept pressuring and had several chances to tie it but the Panthers held on for the win. OA coach Sharon Lawrence praise Lozzi for her overall performance. Franklin goalie Anna Jardine made four saves in the win.

King Philip, 4 @ Mansfield, 4 – Final – The Hornets nearly made it three straight wins against King Philip (after handing the Warriors their only two losses last year), but Alli Meehan’s second goal of the game (assisted by Nicole Connor) tied the game and kept KP unbeaten this season. Lauren Craig scored the first Mansfield goal off an assist by Hayleigh Crawford. Alicia Hottleman scored the next three for the Hornets, one assisted by Maggie Danehy and the other two by Becca Hottleman. Meehan scored twice and assisted on two others for KP. Meghan MacDonald and Claire Lawlor had the other two goals for the Warriors.

Volleyball
Attleboro, 0 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – Taunton defended its home court with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-12, 25-11) over visiting Attleboro. Sam Silviera had 13 kills while Mckenzie Lucie had a strong game in the back row, recording six digs, four aces, and 22 service points. Jaime Brown also had a strong game for the Tigers with 25 assists, three digs, and two aces.

North Attleboro, 0 @ Canton, 3 – Final – Canton won 25-11, 25-22, 25-14 and head coach Pat Cawley said that the entire team contributed to the win. Nicole Brown had another solid all-around game with 16 assists, 10 digs, an ace, and a kill for the Bulldogs. Megan McDonough had 12 digs and Taylor Harris and Erin Devine each had eight kills and two blocks.

Sharon, 3 @ Foxboro, 0 – Final

Franklin, 3 @ Oliver Ames, 1 – Final – OA won the opening set, but Franklin won the final three sets to stay unbeaten. The Panthers won 17-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-15. Sadie Homer set a career-high with 40 digs for OA, while Allie Kemp had 31 assists. The Tigers also got 14 kills from Jordan Bosse and seven kills and three aces from Jackie Raymond.

King Philip, 2 @ Mansfield, 3 – Final – Mansfield raced out to a 2-0 lead only for King Philip to storm back, winning the third set big and then edging the Hornets in a close fourth set. But the Hornets were able to close the win, earning a 16-14 win in the fifth set to get the victory (25-19, 25-17, 11-25, 24-26, 16-14). For Mansfield, Greenly Kelly had 10 kills, 10 service points, and five blocks, Olivia McGrath added 12 kills, Emily Dardinski chipped in with 11 kills, and Katie Dardinski finished with 11 service points and six digs. Catherine Waldeck led KP with 15 kills two blocks and Nicole Coughlan had a strong game, finishing with 14 kills, seven blocks, and two aces.

Milford, 2 @ Stoughton, 3 – Final – Milford rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set but Stoughton held on to defeat the Hawks. For Stoughton, Sasha Hyacinthe had a strong game behind the line with 19 service points, Molly Turner and Mia Bennett combined for 40 digs, and Delaney Nagel and Hanna Holden each had seven kills to pace the Knights.

Golf
North Attleboro, 164 @ Attleboro, 165 – Final

Franklin, 162 @ King Philip, 165 – Final

Mansfield, 164 vs. Norton, 158 – Final – Mansfield’s Jason See was the team medalist, carding a team-low round of 38 but the Hornets fell at Norton Country Club.

Oliver Ames, 150 @ Milford, 171 – Final – Thomas Walsh led the way again for OA, shooting a medalist round of 35. Liam Barry and Tate Hadges both shot a round of 38 and Nolan Donze carded a 39 for the Tigers.

Boys Soccer
Canton, 2 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Twice Canton took a one-goal lead and twice Foxboro responded in a quick manner to earn a draw at home. Paul Corcoran converted a sliding shot in the 2nd minute to give the visitors an early advantage but Nic Beigel brought Foxboro level, converting a penalty drawn by Matt Garcia. In the second half, Simon Cruz made a nice near post run in the 59th minute and hit a one timer to make it 2-1 in favor of Canton. But just four minutes later, Beigel grabbed his second with a nicely placed shot from outside the area.

Girls Soccer
Canton, 2 @ Foxboro, 2 – Final – Foxboro built a 2-0 lead but Canton scored twice in the final 20 minutes to earn a draw. Sophomore Katelyn Mollica put the hosts up 1-0 in the 10th minute, an advantage Foxboro took into halftime. Ten minutes into the second half, Kaitryn Franchino scored her second goal in as many games to make it 2-0. But Canton scored on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute and tied the game in the 71st minute to earn a point on the road.

Taunton, 0 @ North Attleboro, 9 – Final – North Attleboro’s Ashlyn Gaulin recorded four points and sister Emma Gaulin had three points as the Rocketeers rolled at home. Ashlyn Gaulin scored three goals and had one assist while Emma Gaulin scored once and had two helpers. Olivia Bishop, Lauren Pezzi, Lexi Sinacola, Tess Collins, and Emma Noreck all scored once for North Attleboro.

Field Hockey
Canton, 0 @ Walpole, 4 – Final – Canton sophomore Riley O’Connor made 16 saves in goal, but the Bulldogs fell on the road to the Porkers.

North Attleboro, 0 @ Taunton, 4 – Final – Taunton scored a pair of goals in each half to pick up a win over visiting North Attleboro. Alana Tavares scored both goals in the first half to give the Tigers the lead. Seniors Lauren Torres and Cierra Bartel each scored once in the second half for Taunton while Emma Sheehan made five saves in goal. THS head coach Liz Hathaway said Jillian Pagliuca, Jocelyn Pagliuca, and Kathryn Robinson all played well for the Tigers.

Oliver Ames, 2 vs. West Bridgewater, 1 – Final – Oliver Ames scored once in each half to pick up a win over West Bridgewater. The Tigers had 13 corners and peppered the West Bridgewater net with 21 shots. Meaghan Rockey scored OA’s first goal on an assist from Maggie Woods. Rockey then set Maura Kiernan up for the game-winning goal at the midway point of the second half.

Boys Cross Country
Ocean State Invitational – Mansfield’s Patrick Heavey earned a third place finish to help the Hornets take a third overall as a team. Heavey clocked in at 16:33.8 for third while Paxton Howard (17:30.9, 38th), Mike Mullahy (17:31.5, 40th), and Cullen Lancaster (17:32.3, 42nd) all had top 50 finishes for the Hornets. Oliver Ames was fifth as a team led by Zane Reservitz’s (16:51.1) 10th place finish and Rory McLaughlin’s (16:54.9) 12th place finish. North Attleboro senior Liam Monahan was 11th overall, crossing the finish line at 16:54.7. In the other varsity race, Foxboro’s Ryan Proulx finished in 17:33.1, taking 22nd overall.

Girls Cross Country
Ocean State Invitational – Foxboro had two runners finish in the top 10 of the Division 1 Varsity race, helping the Warriors earn a fourth place finish. Junior Abby Hassman was fourth overall at 19:28.4 while senior Lexi Quinn took seventh at 19:34.5. Lindsey Nelson was the third Warrior to cross, taking 17th overall in 20:41.4. In the Division 2 Varsity race, Mansfield girls were 20th overall. Senior Margaret Riley (20:50.3) and sophomore Tessa Lancaster (20:51.7) took 43rd and 44th respectively. North Attleboro was 22nd overall with junior Olivia Forbes having the top time, taking 80th in 21:41.1. Attleboro junior Shea Jamieson had the top finish of any Hockomock runner, clocking in at 20:41.1 for 37th.

Second Half Goal Earns Bombardiers a Point at North

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. – It may have only been the second week of the season and both teams had yet to even play a handful of games this fall, but the intensity of the play on the pitch Wednesday night was reminiscent of a playoff game or at least when these teams meet with the Blue-Red Cup on the line.

It was tight, it was physical, and in the end it was tied. Briley Harnois scored with 15 minutes left in the game to cancel out Kayla Pasquel’s first half strike and earn Attleboro a point in a 1-1 draw with North Attleboro on the Beaupre Field turf.

“We’ve been a slow starting team and I challenged them today to really start right off the opening whistle,” said Attleboro coach Steve Santos. “They worked hard. We knew it was going to be a physical game. They have a lot of speed up top and on the wings and we knew we had to slow them down.”

The Rocketeers created enough chances over the course of the game that on another day, with more composed finishing, they could have pulled out the victory. But, for all the chances created by the hosts, the two goalies finished with the same amount of saves because North struggled to put the ball on frame.

North Attleboro coach Bill Wallace said, “We had some chances. A lot of shots we were leaning back on and they were going high, but this is a completely different team than last year and these kids are working real hard. It’s been a crazy preseason, crazy start to the season, and we’re starting to find ourselves.”

Ashlyn Gaulin was the primary focus of the Attleboro defense, with several players taking turns to man-mark the senior forward (who has accounted for six points in a game twice already this season), but she was still able to work scoring opportunities.

Just seven minutes in, Gaulin’s nifty footwork opened up the Attleboro defense but her shot from the right side of the box was right at Bombardiers goalie Tayla Drape. Seven minutes later, Gaulin flicked a pass through the defense to Pasquel, who then gave it right back but the shot went over the bar.

North found its breakthrough in the 23rd minute. Again it was Gaulin who opened up the Attleboro back line, showing off her skill to get space on the left side and then deftly chipping a cross to the back post. Pasquel beat her defender to the ball and bundled it over the line for a 1-0 advantage.

While Attleboro was not getting as many shots on goal, the Bombardiers were giving North’s defense something to worry about on the break with the speed of Harnois and fellow sophomore Isabella Salviati keeping the Rocketeers on their toes. Senior defenders Sam Hawkins and Bishop Feehan transfer Olivia Bishop both had to cut out chances.

After Julia Reyes had a shot from the right wing that went into the side netting, Attleboro got its first shot on target in the 35th minute. A Harnois free kick from 25 yards was saved under the bar by a leaping Emma Noreck.

Just a minute later, Emma Gaulin sent in an angled free kick from nearly midfield that found the head of Haley Ferrin, but the header was right at Drape. North had one more chance before halftime, as Emma Gaulin played the ball through to Lydia Santos, who picked out Ashlyn Gaulin, who then fed Pasquel, but again the final shot was too high and off target.

The Rocketeers continued to get shots off early in the second half. Pasquel teed up Alex Moulson racing in from the left side but she could not keep the shot down under pressure from Ashley Lauzier and Gaulin and Pasquel combined again for a chance only to have the shot smack off the football goalposts.

“I rotated a few defenders on Ashlyn to keep her man-marked,” Santos explained, “and in the second half we had to push a few more up and create more chances, put pressure on their backs. They had some chances early that I’m sure they wish they had back.”

As long as the game stayed 1-0, Attleboro felt like it had a shot. In the 55th minute, Jessica Gates got free on the right and her cross went all the way across the box to Reyes, who had her shot blocked. The rebound bounced to Salviati but again the shot found the leg of a North defender. Three minutes later, Gates had a long free kick that Noreck was able to catch.

In the 65th minute, the Bombardiers found an equalizer. Salviati ran onto a bouncing ball down the right side and played a clever, one-touch pass in behind the North defense that Harnois was able to run onto. With Noreck racing off her line to cut down the angle, Harnois made no mistake with a rasping finish into the far corner.

“It was a good finish,” Santos said. “I thought she had one more chance when she came down here and she just mis-struck it. When you show up at North Attleboro, you know it’s going to be a battle.”

After the goal, Attleboro had momentum and nearly took the lead but Reyes’ cross was just in front of Salviati on the edge of the six-yard-box. North had one last chance in the final six minutes, but Gaulin saw her line drive free kick held by Drape.

“We’re beginning to be a little more offensive,” said Santos. “We have some girls who are feisty and they’re willing to be scrappy. The girls are starting to believe in themselves and that’s what you need to compete in the Hock.”

Wallace added, “This was a good motivational game for them because the intensity was there. We hadn’t faced this kind of intensity yet this year. At this point in the season, we’ll take the point and move on, but hopefully we’ll finish those chances.”

Attleboro (1-2-1) will try to build on the draw when it hosts defending league champ King Philip on Monday. North Attleboro (2-0-2), which moved into a one-point lead in the Davenport, will host Taunton on Saturday morning.

North coach Bill Wallace called it a “good back and forth game.” He added that Emma Gaulin covered a lot of ground in the midfield and the back line of Lydia Hershey, Sam Hawkins, Bri Westcott, Morgan Silver, and Olivia Bishop all played well. Emma Noreck earned the clean sheet in goal for North.

Mansfield, 3 @ Attleboro, 0 – Final – Sophomore Abby Varricchione scored just over halfway through the second half to break a scoreless tie to give the Hornets the lead for good. Attleboro, 221 @ Milford, 222 – Final (5 Cards) – After being tied at 175 through four cards, the match went to a fifth card and Attleboro emerged with a one-stroke win. Attleboro’s Ethan Johnson and Milford’s Riley Lynch were co-medalists, each shooting 40 on the day.

Foxboro, 172 @ Canton, 155 – Final – Canton’s Chris Lavoie fired a 1-over par round of 35 at Blue Hill Country Club to pace the Bulldogs to a win over visiting Foxboro. Tommy Dimock added a round of 38 while Mike Gobbi carded a 39. Jon Dowling and Noah Hicks each shot 42 for Foxboro.

Warriors Earn Draw Against Highly-Ranked Shamrocks

WRENTHAM, Mass. – Makayla Griffin tried to play a ball forward in the attacking third with only seconds to play in Saturday afternoon’s match-up with Bishop Feehan at Macktaz Field. The ball took an unfortunate bounce off the heel of Rachel Hogan as she made a run into space and caromed to a Feehan player.

The King Philip defense tried to race back into position, but the Shamrocks countered with pace and created a chance for leading scorer Enisa Amedio. The forward sped into the box and fired a low shot only to be denied by KP goalie Emma Durant, who slid out to block the shot with her legs.

That save preserved a 2-2 draw for the Warriors in game that they controlled for large portions against a Feehan team that is considered among the top 10 in the state. KP avenged a 1-0 loss to Feehan in the first meeting and moved one point closer to qualifying for the state tournament.

“I thought we carried the play for most of the game,” said KP coach Gary Pichel. “When you play a quality team like that and you give it your best and they give it their best and you come out with a tie…I’m happy with that.”

The Shamrocks got off to the perfect start, scoring inside the first two minutes of the game. Bailey Conti kneed in a corner from Olivia Bishop to give Feehan the very early lead.

KP answered right back with a set piece of its own. Junior defender Emma Corcoran played an angled free kick from 35 yards on the left side that eluded everyone in the box except for freshman Avery Snead, who prodded the ball into the net at the back post to tie the game.

In the 18th minute, Corcoran passed on a chance to put a free kick into the box and squared the ball to Sarah Fleck on her right. Fleck took a dipping shot from almost 40 yards that the Feehan keeper stood no chance of reaching but that smacked off the crossbar. Just seconds later, the visitors earned a corner and Katie McCarthy nodded Feehan in front.

Other than the two corners, KP was pressing the play and putting the Shamrocks on their heels. The combination of Fleck and Griffin was opening up the Feehan midfield and Snead and classmate Chloe Layne had the Shamrocks defense twisting and turning.

Layne nearly tied the game just three minutes after Feehan took the lead with a series of feints and step-overs that split the right back and central defender. The chance was smothered by the Feehan goalie but was just a preview of the issues that Layne would cause running the left channel.

Feehan almost doubled the lead in the 33rd minute but Durant was quickly off her line and threw out a quick left hand to deny Shealyn Quinn. Seven minutes later, with halftime looming, Layne pulled KP level. Griffin sent in a cross from the left that Layne settled with one touch and created space just inside the box before depositing a shot under the bar to make it 2-2.

“Those two freshmen are my leading scorers,” said Pichel of Snead and Layne. “Chloe does some stuff with her feet that…she’ll juggle right in front of you and then she’ll bring it up to her head and push it right over the top and go around you.”

Just four minutes into the second half, Feehan had a rare opportunity from open play when a through ball split the defenders and gave Amedio a chance to run at the keeper, but Durant came flying out and got a hand to the ball to stop the chance.

In the 50th minute, Corcoran lined up a 25-yard free kick and for the second time in the game, a KP player fired a shot off the bar. Durant (five saves) came up huge off another Feehan corner 15 minutes later to not only stop the initial header but also to stuff the follow up from point-blank range.

That aggressiveness paid off in the final minute of the game, as Durant came out quickly and blocked an Amedio shot with her legs that kept it at 2-2.

“That was a nail-biter right there,” said Pichel of the heart-in-mouth moment that the Warriors had at the end. “I thought, ‘oh no, after all this work.’ [Emma] came up huge.

“I had a little one-on-one with her and said that we need to stop being conservative in net. We need to be super aggressive in games like this, going forward all the way.”

Durant had plenty of help in front of her, including Corcoran and freshman Olivia Berry. The central defensive pairing was effective in compressing the space for the forwards and covering for each other when one decided to step forward, either to prevent an attack or to start one.

“Olivia walked on and immediately showed that she can play with the best of them,” said Pichel. “She looked like Emma [Corcoran] did as a freshman.”

He added, “When we got beat by the Franklins and Mansfields, the middle was wide open, so I decided to mix up my five backs in a jagged shape to stop the through balls.”

At the final whistle, KP felt a mixture of relief and disappointment because snagging a point from Feehan is a positive but the overall play had the Warriors believing that they were the team on top. That gives the Warriors confidence as they get back into league play this week.

“We’ve been improving steadily since those losses to the top teams in the Hock,” Pichel explained. “I like our chances. I really do. We may not win the division, but we’ll be close.”

King Philip (8-3, 9-5-1) will try to get the one point left to ensure a return to the state tournament against Attleboro on Monday.
