North Attleboro Wrestling Claims D2 State Title

The North Attleboro wrestling team is bringing home some hardware. The Rocketeers edged out Central Catholic by less than five points, 109-105.5. North was behind heading into the upper weight classes but a win from Mattuez Kudra in the 220 D2 State Final propelled North into first place.

Kudra took down Boston Latin’s Olamadide Adeyeri, 3-0, in the 220 championship to win the individual title. Zack Gould (145) and Brad White (195) earned third-place finishes to earn big points for the Rocketeers. Dan Cooper (12) was fourth overall and Adam Eberle (160) took sixth in his bracket. John Kummer (285) and Brady Folan (113) were seventh and Mike Burns (132) took eighth.

Also in Division 2, Canton sophomore Eddie Marinilli became the first Bulldog wrestler to win a D2 State Championship. Marinilli pinned Milton’s Xavier Fischer and Hingham’s Tristan Williamson in the first two rounds, beat Reading’s Trevor Morton, 4-0, in the semifinals and then used a second-period takedown to defeat Marlborough’s Wilson Ordondez in the final.

Canton, which finished 17th with 45 points, also had received a solid showing from Nick Matt (285), who finished sixth overall.

Mansfield sophomore Vinnie Holmes was the third Hockomock wrestler to earn a state title. Holmes won the D1 State Title at 182, earning pinfall wins in the first two rounds, edging Putnam’s Taha Huggins, 10-6, in the semifinals and then defeating Brookline’s Atman Barrille, 9-3, in the championship.

For team results in D1, Franklin placed ninth (74.5 points), highlighted by Ian Bakalars second place finish at 120. Mansfield was 10th (63 points) and Taunton finished 34th overall with sophomore Woudanly Danger taking fourth at 220.

Stoughton and King Philip tied 21st overall (38 points). Black Knights sophomore Carlvin LaGuerre was a state finalist at 285. LaGuerre pinned Greater Lowell’s Zachary Peltier, picked up 3-0 win over Canton’s Nick Matt and edged Sharon’s Justin Wells, 2-1, in overtime. He fell to Wellesley’s Josh Cohen in the final. Stoughton’s Paul Feeney (220) was fifth and CJ Carpenter (106) was eighth.

King Philip had three grapplers place with Mohammad Lotfi taking fifth in the 138 bracket. Luke Fitch (170) and Shawn Conniff (182) each finished sixth.

Oliver Ames’ Anthony Berksza (145) and Dean Pacini (195) each had fifth-place finishes while Sharon’s Justin Wells (285) earned fourth overall.

Foxboro came up just shy of the D3 State Title. The Warriors (127 points) held a four-point lead over Dedham heading into the heavyweight finals but Dedham’s Jonathan Cleveland beat Hampden Charter’s Akhmet Azizov in the championship match to propel the Marauders into first place with 129 points. The Warriors had five wrestlers finish in second place.

Milford, 60 vs. Hopedale, 46 – Final – After allowing 20 points in the first quarter, Milford limited Hopedale to just 26 points over the next three quarters, including just five points in the second frame. Senior Andrew Fraioli had a career night, dropping 25 points while hauling in 15 boards, both career-highs. Senior Kayden Kelley added 12 points and 14 rebounds and junior Brendan White added 14 points.

Attleboro, 2 @ North Attleboro, 6 – Final – North Attleboro built a 2-0 lead in the first period, tacked on three more goals in the second period and finished the third with one more goal to beat Attleboro. Big Bue scored both of its goals in the second period, trailing 5-2 heading into the third. Jason McNeany netted a hat trick to led Big Red while Will Yeomans, Brendan McHugh and freshman Tyler Sarro (first career tally) all scored once. Eddie Noel and Jake Parker scored for Attleboro with Ryan Morry and Cam Littig recording assists.

Stoughton, 1 @ Canton, 8 – Final – Eight players scored for Canton in the win, including sophomores Chris Lavoie, Timmy Kelleher, Jack Connolly and junior Ryan Colby.

Oliver Ames, 8 @ Taunton, 3 – Final – Oliver Ames exploded for eight goals with junior Brett Williams playing a role in six of them. Williams scored a hat trick and added three assists in the win while Max Ward had two goals and an assist in his first game back from injury. Freshman Ross Carroll added a goal and an assist and junior defenseman Matt McCormick finished with three points.

Wrestling
Canton Quad (Canton) – Canton went 2-1 on the day, picking up wins over Lynnfield/North Reading (64-9) and St. John’s Shrewsbury. The Dogs fell to powerhouse Metheun.

Duxbury Duals (Foxboro, Mansfield) – The two Hockomock teams in the Duxbury Duals met in the championship, with Foxboro prevailing 39-36 with a win in the final match. Mansfield beat Quincy (24-0) and BC High (38-38, criteria) to advance to the finals. Foxboro beat host Duxbury (59-6) and Andover (54-14) to advance to the finals.

Burt Burger Invitational (Franklin) – Franklin finished first at the annual Burt Burger Invitational, racking up 249 points. Jake Carlucci (106) and Jordan Carlucci (126) each won their respective brackets. Jordan Carlucci earned the “Most Pins, Least Time” award with three pins in 5:21. Brian Farrell and Bruce Johnson each had second-place finishes for the Panthers.

King Philip Quad (King Philip, Sharon) – Sharon picked up two wins on the day, notching victories over Whitman-Hanson (52-21) and Hock rival King Philip (40-29).

Springfield Central Duals (North Attleboro) – North Attleboro suffered its first dual meet loss of the season, but racked up three impressive wins on Saturday. Big Red notched wins over sixth-ranked Shawsheen Tech (46-24), Windham (NH) (44-16) and Agawam (63-3) but fell to New England’s top team, Mt. Anthony Union (44-18). Brady Folan (113) was the lone Rocketeer to go 4-0 on the day while Dan Cooper (120, two pins), Zack Gould (145, one pin), Adam Eberle (160, two pins), Reid Wills (170, three pins), Chris Ferrigno (182), Brad White (195, three pins), and John Kummer (285, three pins) all had three wins. “This is the kind of effort level we needed to see at this point in the season,” said North coach Wayne Griffin. “It gives us a lot of hope and drive as we prep for the league tournament championships next weekend.”

Sandwich Invitational (Taunton) – Taunton finished ninth overall out of 17 teams and sophomore Woudanly Danger was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Danger won the 220 bracket while Mason Frank (285) was second, Alex Simon (195) took third, and Josh Grasso (132) finished fourth for the Tigers.

MSTCA Division 4 State Relays – Canton’s 4×200 relay team of Marquise Montes, Cam Sanchez, Cordell Smith and Riley McDonnell came in first at 1:36.37, qualifying for states. Canton’s high jump team of Smith, Montes, and McDonell came in sixth overall at 16-03.25. On the girls’ side, Foxboro’s 4×800 relay team finished sixth at 10:23.48 while the 4×50 shuttle hurdle team was seventh at 32.23.

Canton, 71 vs. Boston Latin, 56 – Final – Canton’s offense poured in 25 points in the first quarter, building a 15-point lead and never looking back against visiting Boston Latin. Senior Tony Harris scored a team-high 17 points and hauled in nine rebounds, setting a new program record for career rebounds. Senior Jake Verille added 14 points, junior Devin Foster had 13 points and senior Austin Maffie added 11 points.

Foxboro, 49 vs. Bethel Park, 37 – Final – Holding a two-point lead at halftime, Foxboro outscored Bethel Park 14-5 in the third quarter to create the necessary separation to get the win. Sophomore Brandon Borde scored nine of his 14 points in the crucial third quarter while senior Joe Morrison had five of his team-high 15 points. Bobby Harrison helped seal the win with nine of his 14 points in the final quarter. Foxboro will play Shaler Area High School (PA) in the championship round of its bracket at 12:30 on Friday at Disney.

Franklin, 48 vs. Arlington, 46 – Final – Franklin kept Arlington without a final point over the final two minutes and rattled off five straight points to turn a late deficit into a win. Senior Matt Elias (nine points) hit his first three of the game to tie it 46-46 and sophomore Chris Edgehill scored seven of his 14 points in the final quarter, including a pull-up up jumper late to give the Panthers the lead. Senior Paul Mahon (14 points) was named MVP of the tournament while Edgehill and junior Jalen Samuels were named to the all-tournament team.

Mansfield, 64 vs. BC High, 73 – Final – BC High outscored Mansfield 17-9 in the third quarter, including an 11-0 run to start the second half. Senior John McCoy scored a team-high 21 points while classmate Justin Vine added 12 points for the Hornets.

North Attleboro 53 vs. Reading, 32 – Final – Big Red set the defensive tone early, limiting Reading to just four points in the opening quarter and building a double-digit lead (27-16) by halftime. Junior Josh Montague netted 10 of his team-high 15 points in the first half to help create the lead. Junior Jake Petersen added a career-best 13 points, senior Chad Peterson hit three triples for nine points, and Derek Shanks scored seven points to go along with a strong defensive performance. North will play host Lincoln-Sudbury in the championship of the Warrior Slam on Friday night at 7:00.

Taunton, 79 @ Durfee, 70 – Final – Taunton overcame a woeful start (down 12-1) and a 26-point second quarter from Durfee with a strong second half to earn the win in the championship of the Skip Karam Tournament. Junior Lou Vendrell poured in a career-high 26 points, including 14 in the third quarter, to help the Tigers turn the game around. Sophomore Dante Law added a career-high 25 points while senior Lens Esquil, who was named tournament MVP, scored five of his 10 points in the final quarter to help seal the win.

Girls Basketball
Franklin, 40 @ Mansfield, 50 – Final – The Hornets took the lead with a 22-11 second quarter and held on for a double-digit win over their Kelley-Rex rival. Ann Maher finished with a team-high 14 points for Mansfield on four three-pointers. Maggie Danehy added nine points and eight rebounds in the win. Bea Bondhus was Franklin’s top scorer with 14 points and Breanna Atwood added seven.

Oliver Ames, 61 vs. Brockton, 47 – Final

Sharon, 59 @ Holliston, 62 – Final – Emma Eberhardt scored 24 points for the Eagles in the loss.

Stoughton, 36 @ Newton North, 40 – Final – Stoughton, which trailed by as much as nine, cut the deficit to just one late in the fourth quarter but Newton North held on for the win. Senior Val Whalen had 17 points and 13 rebounds while sophomore Aliyah Wright chipped in with 13 points.

Taunton, 46 vs. Durfee, 57 – Final – Lily Patneaude and Hannah Moniz each scored 14 points in the loss, while Kelsey White added eight points for the Tigers.

Lowell Holiday Tournament (Foxboro, Franklin, Stoughton), 9:00AM

Marshfield Tournament (Mansfield, North Attleboro, Oliver Ames, Sharon) – North Attleboro and Mansfield both had top-five finishes in the team standings while Oliver Ames had its best showing in program history at the tournament. North was fourth with 183 points while Mansfield took fifth overall with 180 points. OA scored 96.5 points, the most in program history at the Marshfield Tournament (now in its 31st year) to take 14th overall while Sharon took 16th with 65.5 points. The Rocketeers had nine grapplers place inside the top seven, led by Danny Cooper (120, 3-1 with one pin) and Jake Direnzo (126, 4-1) who each finished second. John Kummer (285) took third overall, Adam Eberle (160) and Brad White (195) each placed fourth, Ethan Smith (106), Zack Gould (145) and Reid Wills (160) all placed sixth and Mike Burns (132) was seventh in his bracket.

Mansfield had a strong day with three individual champions, just one of two schools to accomplish the feat. Antonios Sevastos earned up upset over the top seed, 5-4, to win the 113 bracket, Jayden Curley also took down the top-seed, 4-2, to earn the 160 title and Vinnie Holmes won 8-6 for the 182 championship. CJ Glaropoulos finished third at 138 and George Glaropoulos (152) and Will Stratton (132) each had fourth-place finishes for the Hornets.

Oliver Ames’ memorable day was sparked by a second place finish from Dean Pacini (195), who was edged out 4-2 in the final, and junior Anthony Berksza’s fourth-place finish at 145. Freshman Remy Creighton was seventh overall at 106 and Nick McGovern took eighth at 113. For Sharon, Sam Mandelbraut (132) was sixth, Tyler Cashton (152) took seventh and Matt Callan (145) finished eighth.

Hockomock Wrestling Championships 2017

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Franklin had three individual champions, two second place finishes and four more grapplers finish third or fourth to win the team title at the Hockomock League Wrestling Championships at Oliver Ames on Saturday.

The Panthers registered 218.5 points, edging out North Attleboro (212.5 points) and Foxboro (200.5 points).

Franklin’s Ian Bakalars won the 113 title with a 6-2 decision, Mike Racca notched a first round pin to win the 120 title and Dylan Maclean earned the 145 title with a pin. Jordan Carlucci (106) and Brian Perry (285) had second place finishes, Evan Hernandez (182) and Kyler Colella (195) each came in third and TJ Remillard (126) and Brian Farrell (132) both placed fourth.

The Rocketeers, who have clinched at least a share of the Davenport division dual meet title, only had one winner in the tournament but once again show off its depth with three second place finishes, and nine other wrestlers finishing either third, fourth, fifth or sixth. North Attleboro’s Nick Gould was the team’s only champion, scoring an impressive 14-0 win at 152. It marks the second straight year Gould won a Hockomock title after winning the 145 title a year ago. Dan Cooper (113), Jake Direnzo (120) and Brandon Graveline (132) each placed second for Big Red.

Foxboro’s Matt Kelley was impressive in winning his third straight Hockomock League title. Kelley raced out to a quick 14-0 lead before scoring a pin to earn the Hockomock title at 132. During his sophomore year, Kelley won the 120 title and during his junior year, Kelley scored an 8-0 decision to win the 126 title. Brian Kelley was equally impressive, notching a 10-0 win in a very competitive 138 bracket to win his first Hockomock title. Matt Mullally held on for a 6-5 win to claim the Hock title at 160 – his second straight title at that weight class.

While plenty of veterans claimed titles, there were three freshmen that won Hockomock League titles in their first ever championship event. Mansfield’s Antonios Sevastos, who suffered a first round pin to Franklin’s Jordan Carlucci in a dual meet earlier this week, avenged that loss by scoring a takedown in the final 20 seconds to win the 106 crown. Teammate and classmate Vinnie Holmes continued his stellar freshman campaign, rolling through the bracket and picking up a 14-2 win in the finals. Canton’s Eddie Marinilli made his mark as well, winning four matches on the day, including an 11-2 decision in the 126 final match.

Oliver Ames was fifth on the day, the top finishing team without a champion. Sophomore Anthony Berksza was second at 145 and sophomore Dean Pacini made a run to the finals before falling to Milford’s Ryan Gray (7-1) at 195.

North Gets Edge Over Foxboro in Davenport Title Race

FOXBORO, Mass. – Fittingly, the first league dual meet since the divisional split between the top two wrestling programs in the history of the Hockomock and the meet that could eventually decide the Davenport division champion was only decided by the slimmest of margins.

Six of Wednesday night’s 14 matches were decided by two points or less. Only two matches were ended in pins with one walk over, two major victories, and a technical fall.

In the end, North Attleboro did just enough to pick up the 31-24 road victory at longtime rival Foxboro. With the victory, North put itself in control of its own destiny as it tries to mark its first season in the Davenport by winning the league’s dual meet title.

Following the meet, both coaches expressed admiration for their opposition.

“We knew this was going to be a close match,” said North coach Wayne Griffin. “We’ve been following Coach Ivatts for the past couple years and he’s doing a wonderful job over here with these kids. That was a heck of a match.”

Foxboro coach Billy Ivatts, who was also a wrestler in this rivalry and a three-time state champion for the Warriors, said of having North Attleboro back on the league schedule, “I love it. I like having them here. It’s good for the kids to get the competition. It’s good for later on down the road to have that close match experience and just obviously wish it turned out a little differently.”

Starting at 126 pounds, Foxboro jumped out to an early lead. Tom Gallagher picked up a second round pin to open the night, but North cut the lead in half at 132 when Brandon Graveline got a third round takedown of Phil Dure to win that match 6-5 heading into Foxboro’s strongest two wrestlers, Matt and Brian Kelley.

The twins, both seniors, added two more wins to their already impressive careers (Matt became the program’s all-time leader in wins, beating out his coach’s record, earlier this season), but neither could get the maximum points. Matt won 13-1 and Brian got five points for his 15-0 tech, but North managed to avoid getting pinned.

“The Kelley kids are awesome,” said Griffin. “You’re wrestling someone who is very good and your job is to go out and compete, but you can win a match by not getting pinned. They know Nick Gould is our top guy and they employed the same strategy.”

Gould, fresh off a win at the Marshfield Holiday Tournament last week, got a major win at 152 and cut Foxboro’s lead in the meet to 15-7.

That led into arguably the match of the night. North’s Adam Eberle took a blow to the top of his head and had to be extensively bandaged to stop the bleeding, but he managed to pull out a dramatic win against Max Dorman, who also needed attention at one point from the trainer.

Eberle fell behind 4-2 with 30 seconds remaining in the match but tied it with a takedown 20 seconds later. He got another takedown early in the overtime period to seal the win.

He split his head open,” said Griffin of Eberle, “and it was almost like the Roman warriors, but he’ll go home and get a couple stitches and he’ll do a good job.”

Matt Mullaly got Foxboro going again at 170 with a first round pin and Dave Dow got the winning point on a third round escape to win 4-3 over Reid Wills at 182 to put the Warriors ahead 24-10. From that point on, North would win the final six matches to come out on top.

“It was a tough weight class for us to start with,” Ivatts admitted. “You know where their good wrestlers are and they know where our good wrestlers are and you can kind of have it all mapped out… They made all the right moves and won some matches I think we should’ve won and they took it.”

Mateusz Kudra (195), Brad White (220) and John Kummer (285) each pulled in three points for the Rocketeers, as the lightweights got prepared. Foxboro only had Adam Lanctot to wrestle at either 106 or 113, so Ivatts chose to forfeit the match at 106 against Brady Folan, who beat Lanctot in their last match, to try and give his team a shot in the final two matches.

“Their 106 is really good and we didn’t want to lose both,” said Ivatts of giving North its first lead at 25-24. “We thought we could get the win at 113 but unfortunately it didn’t work out. If we get the three [points] there, then it kind of goes back in our favor.”

Lanctot came back to tie Dan Cooper at 4-4 in the third round after an escape, but Copper answered back with a takedown that turned out to be the winning move in a 6-5 thriller that Griffin said “sealed” the meet.

Jake DiRenzo held off Shane Kerrigan, 2-0, at 120 pounds to ensure that North left Foxboro with the victory.

“It was a great high school dual meet,” said Ivatts. “Especially at the high school level it’s always pin or be pinned really, so you could just see the caliber of wrestling from both teams is really high.”

When asked what this meant in terms of the league title race, Griffin admitted, “This was the match. No disrespect to anyone else, but this was the match.

“I think that’s a fair assessment, but who knows what the future can bring. Kids get sick, they get injured, they rise to the occasion, but this is a step in the right direction.”

North Attleboro (9-1) will host a quad meet this weekend, while Foxboro will have a week off before hosting Canton.
