Former Attleboro standout Nate Tellier had a standout season for UMass Dartmouth. The sophomore appeared in all 40 games for the Corsairs, leading the team in almost every offensive statistic category, including runs scored (34), hits (63), triples (three), runs batted in (37), runs (34), stolen bases (19), batting average (.382), on-base percentage (.464), slugging percentage (.570). The offensive outburst was good enough for Tellier to be named to the LEC Second-Team, and the D3 Baseball All-New England Second Team.

Tellier wasn’t the only former Attleboro Bombardier to standout on the diamond. MIT senior Max Lancaster finished his senior season with a career-high .325 batting average. Lancaster tied his career high with 38 hits, and set career-best with 11 doubles, 28 runs batted in and 11 stolen bases. The senior’s best series of the year came in a three-game matchup against Emerson, where he recorded eight hits, six runs scored, two home runs and nine runs batted in. Lancaster landed a spot on the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Second Team for his performance this season.

Former two-time HockomockSports.com Girl’s Lacrosse Player of the Year Marta Versprille had an impressive senior season at Saint Anselm. The former Franklin midfielder started all 18 games for the Hawks, recording 26 goals and seven assists. Her 33 total points were the sixth most on the team, while she ranked third on the team in ground balls (39) and draw controls (59).

Framingham State sophomore, and former North Attleboro Red Rocketeer, Mycala Moody helped the Rams reach the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament this season. Moody batted .379 with five doubles, two triples, and 18 RBI during her sophomore campaign. After earning the 2017 MASCAC Rookie of the Year, Moody earned second team All-MASCAC honors this season.

Meg Colleran, another North Attleboro alumni and the 2014 HockomockSports.com Softball Player of the Year, wrapped up her senior season at UMass Amherst in impressive fashion. Colleran started 22 games of the 27 she appeared in for the 35-win Minutewomen, going an impressive 14-6 with a 2.99 ERA. Colleran was a perfect 9-0 in Atlantic 10 conference games, boasting an impressive 1.97 ERA in 12 appearances. She finishes her UMass career as one of 10 Minutewomen in program history to eclipse the 20-win mark in 2016, while becoming one of five to reach that mark in multiple seasons in 2017.

A pair of former Hockomock standouts helped Springfield College Lacrosse to a 13-6 record. Franklin’s Jack Vail started 17 games this season at attack, scoring 26 goals and leading the team with 30 assists. Connor Eschmann of King Philip helped man Springfield’s defense, appearing in all 18 games. Eschmann racked up the third most ground balls by any defender with 30, and was tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with 21.

Taunton’s Connor Johnson was one of three Maine Black Bears to land on the America East All-Academic team. On the field, Johnson led Maine with 28 appearances on the mound and carried the third-best earned run average on the team (3.71).

Former King Phillip standout and current Endicott Gull, Jen Lacroix, had a breakout sophomore season in 2018. Lacroix led the 14-win Gulls with 70 goals and 87 points. Her 70 goals were also enough to lead the entire Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) and rank 28th in the nation. Her impressive season allowed the attack to move into the Endicott record books, as she is tied for first in game-winning goals (6), second in goals (70), and fourth in points (87). Lacroix was also named to the 2018 All-CCC First Team along with the 2018 IWLCA Division III All-Pilgrim Region Second Team. She was also a two-time CCC Offensive Player of the Week (03/12/18, 03/26/18).

Luc Valenza’s senior season at UMass Amherst was a successful one. He former Foxboro Warrior appeared in all 17 games on defense for the Minuteman, starting 14. Valenza finished the year with 24 groundballs and caused 15 turnovers. He also recorded his first ever goal and second ever collegiate point earlier this season versus Hofstra. Valenza’s efforts were rewarded with selection to the All-CAA First Team and USILA North-South All-Star Game Selection.

At Central Connecticut, King Phillip’s Tori Constantin wrapped up her senior season with the Blue Devils by playing 47 games and setting career-high in runs, hits, home runs, runs batted in, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Her strong season was rewarded with a spot on the 2018 NEC Women’s Softball Second Team All-Conference.

Maria Woodall started all 21 games in goal for the Westfield State University Owls. In those 21 games, Woodall led Westfield to an 18-3 record, along with winning the MASCAC regular season and tournament titles. After leading the league in goals against average (8.26), save percentage (.565) and total saves (183), Woodall was named the 2018 MASCAC women’s lacrosse player of the year. She also earned honors on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’ all-region team and was a second-team choice in the IWLCA’s “Berkshire” Region.

Former Mansfield Hornet Will Kelleher provided a valuable bat for the Stonehill Skyhawks this season. Kelleher recorded the third-most at-bats for the team (144), and was second on the team in doubles (12) and runs batted in (20). The junior’s season also saw new career highs in games played (39), runs scored (20) and slugging percentage (.347).

Over at Lyndon State, Sharon’s former attack Spencer Aubin had the second most points (34) on the Hornets in 16 games. Aubin’s 20 goals were third most on the club and his 14 assists ranked second. Aubin ended the season recording points in six of his final nine games, including back-to-back hat tricks against Green Mountain and Albertus Magnus.

Attleboro’s Kayla Merritt finished with 14 points during her sophomore season with the Curry Women’s Lacrosse Team. Merritt scored 11 goals in 12 games played and added 14 assists and 11 ground balls. Merritt was named a captain for her junior season.

At Penn State, King Philip alumni Christa Wagner earned the starting right field spot for the Nittany Lions. She started 17 games in right during her sophomore season, recording 11 hits, six runs and four runs batted in. Wagner also was able to steal bases and notched 15 putouts in right field.

A pair of former Hockomock athletes provided valuable contributions to the Fitchburg State softball team. King Philip’s Melissa DiPhilippo had a career season, posting a career high in nearly every single offensive category. Her 24 hits ranked fourth best on the team, and her .343 batting average ranked third. Former Attleboro Bombardier Mikayla Harnois started 12 games for the Falcons, posting a team-high 79 innings pitched. Harnois’ best game of the season came against Mount Ida, where the sophomore went seven innings without allowing a run.

Junior Mike Ferrara posted impressive numbers in his most recent season at Worcester State. The former Oliver Ames standout led the Lancers in at-bats (135), home runs (four), runs batted in (31), and slugging percentage (.496). Ferrara also set new personal career highs in batting average (.348) and on-base percentage (.384).

The Western New England Golden Bears women’s lacrosse team saw a pair of Hockomock athletes patrolling the defensive unit, both former Franklin Panthers. Rebecca Allen started 16 of the 18 games she appeared in, setting career high for goals (three), assists (nine) and points (12). Olivia Truenow started all 17 games she appeared in, while also setting a career high in goals (five), assists (two) and points (seven). Both Allen and Truenow led the entire Golden Bears defense in ground balls with 30 and 35 respectively.

Another former Franklin Panther provided the New Haven women’s lacrosse team with a strong season. Julia Jette recorded the fourth most points on the Chargers, with 42 (28 goals, 14 assists) – a new career high. Jette wasn’t the only Hockomock athlete to impact the Chargers, as Mansfield’s Caroline Maher posted 40 goals and 26 assists.

Saint Joseph’s College of Maine’s goalie Connor Trainor had a strong senior season in net for the Monks. Trainor posted a 9.59 goals-against average with a .505 save percentage while being named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference Third Team. The former Franklin Panther led the conference in wins (10), ranked second in games (19) and minutes (1000:32), and fourth in goals-against average this spring. As his career ends, Trainor ranks second in team history in goalkeeper games (60), minutes (2,906), saves (527), wins (23), and shots faced (1679) and third in goals-against average (9.81) and save percentage (.526). He was also one of two Monks to be selected to play in the 2018 New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) East-West Senior All-Star Game.

Attleboro’s Hannah Smith and King Philip’s Maddie O’Gryzek helped pace the UMass Dartmouth’s pitching staff and lineup respectively. Smith started a career-high 24-games for the Corsairs with 131.1 innings of work. She collected 13 wins while finished inside the top-three for wins and earned run average (1.97) while coming top-five for strikeouts (93) and innings pitched. Smith earned her second straight selection to the Little East Conference Second Team. O’Gryzek appeared in all but two games for the Corsairs, recording the second most at-bats on the team (126). She showcased her speed, leading the Corsairs in triples (four) and stolen bases (11). O’Gryzek also set a new career high .389 slugging percentage.

Senior attack Sam Sullivan led Plymouth State with 60 goals while starting all 18 games. The 60 goals were a career high for the former Canton Bulldog, while she also broke career highs in assists (16) and points scored (76). The new marks carried Sullivan to her second straight selection to the All-LEC First Team. She leaves the program as the second player to record three 50-goals. She also ranks in the top ten in the LEC with her 73 points (sixth) and 16 assists (ninth). The co-captain was a two-time Player of the Week selection and is currently fourth all-time in career goals (163) and eighth in program history with 194 career points.

Another former Bulldog saw success on the baseball diamond. Drew Blake belted a team and career-high with eight home runs during his senior season at Fairfield University. Blake led his team with a .477 slugging percentage while starting 40 games for the Stags. Blake was also selected to the All-MAAC Academic Team.

Over at Clark University, Brandon King was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference first team. The former King Phillip standout led the Cougars with 43 goals, which ranked third in the entire NEWMAC. He also added six assists and a team-high 49 points. King twice posted a season-high six goals in Clark’s victories over Salve Regina and Saint John Fisher.

Aimee Kistner had a strong season on the hill for the Western New England Golden Bears. The sophomore appeared in 22 games, starting 15, while recording 11 wins in 113.2 innings of work. Kistner led her team with 119 strikeouts and posted a career-best 2.46 earned run average. Her best performance of the season came against Curry College, where the Taunton graduate threw seven scoreless innings while striking out 10.

At Colorado Mesa, Brian Buckner was named to the Second Team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). Buckner started 13 games while appearing in 18 as a long stick midfielder, piling up 21 ground balls and causing eight turnovers. Buckner also put up two points on the season while scoring his first career goal.

A pair of Hockomock alums played a role in Framingham State’s 16-3 season. Former Canton Bulldog Casey Bradley started all 19 games on defense for the Rams, which marks the second straight season in which she has done so. Bradley posted a career-high 32 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers, the most out of any Ram defender. Mansfield graduate Kim Foley earned her third first team All-MASCAC honors after scoring 46 goals and 34 assists for 80 points during her senior season. Foley finishes her career with 156 goals, 71 assists and 227 career points which ranks her first all-time in career assists and second all-time in points and goals in program history.

Katie Notarangelo was named the NEWMAC Co-Defensive Athlete of the Year while earning a spot on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Region Second Team. Notarangelo scored 60 goals on the season, finishing her career with the sixth most goals in the Institute’s history (145). She also finished with a record for draw controls in a game (15) and in program history ranked third in draw controls (239), tied for fourth in groundballs (127), fifth in caused turnovers (77), and 10th in points (170). In addition, she is currently seventh in the country in free-position percentage (.733).

Former Mansfield Hornet Sabrina Pray qualified seventh in the 100-meter hurdles for the Westfield State University Owls. Pray’s seed time is 14.29 seconds, which was faster than her mark at last year’s NCAA meet. She entered the meet as the 22nd seed and advanced to the finals, where she placed seventh to earn All-America Honors.

A trio of Hockomock athletes helped Bridgewater State University men’s outdoor track and field team capture the meet title at the 11th Annual Eastern Invitational. Cameron Williamson (OA) grabbed top honors in the triple jump with 46’8″/14.22m mark. John Chretien (Taunton) finished third in the javelin, throwing 168’4’’/51.30m. Senior Austin James (Mansfield) placed second in both shot put (46’8″/14.22m) and the discus (137’3″/41.84m). All three posted Division III New England Championships qualifying marks.

On the Bridgewater State women’s track and field team, Milford’s Jenise Madden was one of three team members to earn All-New England honors at the Division III New England Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Madden placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:10.48 to qualify.

Courtney Daggett earned All-East Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Competing as a jumper for Stonehill College, the former Attleboro Bombardier posted her third-career regional honor. She cleared the bar at 5 feet, 4.5 inches at the Silfen Invitational, which marked a season best for the junior as she took home second from the meet.

Ben Chaffee became a regular in the WPI men’s baseball team lineup for the second half of the season, and the Franklin alum answered the bell. Chaffe slashed .386/.474/.482 and drove in 11 runs in his 24 games. The junior ended his season recording hits in 18 of his last 20 games played, including four three-hit games.

King Philip Softball Crowned Division 1 State Champs

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Division 1 State Championship game was certainly far from over when King Philip took a 1-0 lead over Doherty the top of the first inning. But with Kali Magane in the circle and the way that she’s been pitching in the postseason, it sure felt like more than just a one run cushion.

The confidence level grew after the Warriors tacked on another run in the top of the third and then peaked when Jenn Hutnyan launched a three-run home run in the fifth inning.

Magane did the rest, tossing a one-hit shutout with 13 strike outs, fanning the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, punctuating King Philip’s 5-0 win to claim the Division 1 State Championship.
It marks the third D1 State Title in the past seven years for the Warriors.

“We’ve been trying for four years so it’s good to finally get it the last one,” beamed Magane, a senior. “It always feels good when it’s a strikeout, nice to end it like that. We hadn’t faced [Doherty] before so I had to see what they were hitting. In the past, I had been focusing on jamming hitters and keeping them off balanced. But they ended up chasing it high more so that’s what I went with. As the game went on, I just kept adjusting to what they were hitting.”

Senior Christa Wagner started the game with a leadoff single and quickly took second with her first of three stolen bases of the game. Hailey McCasland advanced Wagner with a ground out and Elise Pereira’s contact was deep enough to center to score the run on a sacrifice fly.

Wagner reached on a fielder’s choice in the third and promptly swiped second and third, just beating the throw to third. Doherty pitcher Peyton Sylverster saw her pitch elude catcher Emma Brennan and Wagner took advantage, sprinting in to make it 2-0.

“We don’t like to say [the 2-0 lead is safe] but I’m breathing pretty good,” King Philip coach Norm Beauchemin said. “There’s a reason why that [Doherty] is here…but [Kali] is an equalizer.”

Magane was dominant from start to finish. Doherty’s lone hit was a leadoff single in the top of the second inning and a runner reached on an error in the fifth but neither advanced past second base. Magane retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings and recorded a strikeout in every inning.

“She’s a tremendously smart pitcher. She knew where their weaknesses were and she attacked it,” Beauchemin said.

The Warriors put the proverbial nail in the coffin in the top of the fifth inning. McCasland singled and Pereira drew a two-out walk to put two on. Hutnyan, who had made contact in her first two at-bats but was without a hit, fell behind Sylvester 0-2. But that did’t stop the junior from connecting on the next pitch, smacking a bomb over the left center field fence and putting KP up 5-0.

“She had a two strike lead and I was nervous but I was looking for a pitch to hit,” Hutnyan said. “I wasn’t trying to swing for the fences or anything but it just went off my bat the right way. I could feel it when it came off my bat, it felt good. It gave us a cushion but we still had to play like it was a 0-0 game.”

Magane was at her best following the home run. After the error to start the fifth, Magane fanned three straight. She induced an infield pop up and grounder to third before getting his 10th strikeout to end the sixth. She finished off the season with three straight swinging strikeouts to earn the championship.

“They’re a very relaxed team, they all enjoy each other and have each other’s backs,” Beauchemin said. “They have a lot of confidence and they play a lot of softball. They were able to build up the confidence and they knew if they could play their game today, they’d be tough to beat.”
The Warriors totaled nine hits with Wagner, McCasland and Gorman each having two and Caeli Bench, Brooke Taute and Hutnyan each adding one.

King Philip softball finishes the season with a 24-4 record, and were quick to credit their schedule as a reason they were ready to play today. Over the past 10 years, teams that now reside in the Hockomock League have won the D1 State title six times. Taunton won in 2007 before joining the league, Milford won back-to-back in 2012 and 2013, the latter their first year in the Hock and King Philip won in 2011, 2012 and now 2016. The Warriors also loaded their non-league schedule up, including Bishop Feehan and Newton North.

“I think our schedule paid off, absolutely,” Beauchemin said. “There weren’t that many easy games, so if you don’t have any easy ones, you have to fight for it. When you get into these situations, you have a lot of confidence. We were tested a lot this year, and these girls responded very well.”
“I think our schedule helped prepare us a lot for this game,” Hutnyan said. “We’ve seen pitching exactly like that before, a lot of teams haven’t so that helped us. And I don’t think a lot of teams have seen pitching like Kali, she’s an awesome pitcher, she really is.”

King Philip Softball Claims D1 South Sectional Title

TAUNTON, Mass. – Top-seeded Silver Lake entered Sunday’s D1 South Sectional Final allowing less than a run per game on average and had just one run against in three playoff wins so far.

That certainly didn’t phase the seventh seeded King Philip Warriors.

KP scored a pair of runs in the first inning, added two more in the fourth and tacked on one more in the fifth to get a 5-2 win over the Lakers and the team’s first sectional title since 2011.

“It takes the pressure off us,” King Philip head coach Norm Beauchemin said of the first inning runs. “It gives the opportunity to make a mistake but fortunately we didn’t make mistakes. Altogether, it’s a different game with a two run lead.”

The Lakers, who had been unbeaten at 23-0 (25-0 if you include exclusion games) coming into the game, had only allowed more than one run in three games this season and allowed more than two runs just once, a 5-4 win in April.

Sophomore Elise Pereira got things going in the first inning after Lakers pitcher retired the first two Warrior batters with swinging strikeouts. Pereira’s grounder rolled along the first bast line, was bobbled by the Lakers catcher and the throw was off the mark. Junior Jenn Hutnyan followed with a single through the left side of the infield to put runners on first and second.

Senior Caeli Bench came in clutch with a single to score Pereira from second for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Brooke Taute followed suit with a slow roller down the third base line for an infield single RBI to make it 2-0. Kali Magane’s single loaded the bases for KP but Silver Lake pitcher Maddy Barone was able to induce a pop fly to right.

Despite leaving the bases loaded, the damage was done for KP.

“We wanted to get [Barone] early because she moves the ball a lot and we wanted to get ahead first because they’re a very good team,” freshman Meghan Gorman, who had a pair of RBI, said. “It gives us a lot of confidence [to get the lead] because we have Kali, she shuts everyone down, she’s great.”

While Barone retired KP in order in both the second and third, Magane worked around a one out double in the bottom of the first and retired the side in order in the second. Silver Lake was able to draw within one in the bottom of the third. Madeline Critch led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt. Critch then used a pair of wild pitches to get to third and then home to cut the lead in half.

But KP was quick to answer, stretching the lead to three by plating a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

Taute started the top of the fourth with a double and moved to third when Magane lined a single down the left field line. Barone got a ground out by Gorman came through with her first RBI hit of the day, this one a double into left center to bring Taute and move courtesy runner Jessica Bonner over to third. Senior Christa Wagner drove a pitch to center, deep enough for a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.

“The kids are all good hitters, they make good adjustments, one through nine, Beauchemin said. “Anyone that thinks the bottom of our order is easy, they haven’t seen us play. Seven through nine is just as strong as one through three. Our number nine hitter [Gorman] is probably one of our best hitters but she’s also fast.”

After retiring the side in order in the fourth, Magane allowed a lead off walk in the bottom of the fifth but responded with back to back strikeouts and then got a ground ball to third for the third out.

“They made Kali work, they fouled off a lot of pitches,” Beauchemin said. “But Kali is as tough as a pitcher can be. She doesn’t get the accolades, I don’t know why. I’d put her over any other pitcher in the state in a game. It’s like Tom Brady, he doesn’t get the recognition but when push comes to shove, who are you putting out there? I’m putting Kali Magane out there every time.”

That gave KP enough momentum to tack on another run in the top of the sixth. Taute was the catalyst once again, this time leading off with a walk. Magane grounded out to the shortstop but Taute advanced to second. Gorman connected with her second RBI hit of the day, this one into the outfield deep enough to bring Taute home to make it 5-1.

“We didn’t hit [Barone] as hard this year but we got some scratch hits but they all add up,” Beauchemin added. “We’re comfortable against her because we hit her last year. Obviously, it was late in the game and we hadn’t scored any runs we would be concerned. But coming out with two runs kind of made us feel like we could hit her all day, which wasn’t going to happen.”

Silver Lake turned a lead off single into a run in the bottom of the sixth but Magane induced two fly balls in foul territory, caught by Pereira at first, and a grounder to Ashley Hession at short to finish the inning.

“King Philip was very aggressive at the plate,” Silver Lake coach Tony Pina said. “They were jumping on the first pitch in just about every at bat, making her throw a lot of pitches. Hats off to King Philip for taking the right approach offensively and putting a lot of pressure on our defense. [Magane] was doing a nice job of hitting her spots. She was hitting that low outside corner really effectively. At some point we needed to do a better job attacking that pitch and we didn’t.”

It was business as usual in the final inning for Magane, getting a line out to Hutynan at third, who made a nice grab, a swinging strikeout — her seventh of the game — and then got a grounder to short for the sectional final winning clinching out.

“It’s been five years since the team has won the South sectional, so this is a big win,” Beauchemin said.

“[Silver Lake] is a good team, but there are other good teams and whoever plays the best that day is going to win. Taunton is a very good team, Bishop Feehan had [Silver Lake] for six innings. There’s no cake walks in this tournament. This is probably the toughest tournament that anyone can play in.”

King Philip (22-4) advances to the Division 1 State Semifinal to play the North champion, Lexington. Lexington (20-4) defeated Newton North 2-1 in eight innings in the North sectional final. KP and Lexington will play for a spot in the state finals on Tuesday, at Martin Field in Lowell at 7:00.

TAUNTON, Mass. – Over its last two tournament games, the formula for King Philip softball has been simple: jump out to an early lead then hand it over to pitcher Kali Magane to shut down the opposition.

That formula worked against division rival Taunton on Monday, and it was successful again on Friday night as the Warriors topped Hopkinton 4-0 to advance to the Division 1 South final.

“I think they’re pumped, they’re focused, and they want it,” King Philip coach Norm Beauchemin said. “They’ve been working their tails off, and when we get the lead, Kali knows what to do with it.”

Against Taunton, it was Ashley Hession who powered KP to a 3-0 win with a three-run blast in the second inning that accounted for the only runs of the game. In the second inning of Friday’s game, the Warriors played small ball to race into the lead.

Jenn Hutnyan led off the inning with an infield single on a liner that was knocked down by Hopkinton pitcher Brianna Maribile but the throw was not in time. Magane followed with a hard hit line drive to left center, and after a Hession walk, Meghan Gorman drove in the first run on a shot that spilled out of the glove of the lunging center fielder Lillian Morningstar.

Christa Wagner then grounded one to the second baseman Emily Whelan, who tagged the oncoming Gorman for an out while Magane scored from third. Hailey McCasland plated the third run with an RBI groundout that scored Hession. In the seventh inning, Elise Pereira added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly

“That’s the game of softball,” Beauchemin said. “I think whoever scores three or four runs in one inning, nine out of ten times they’re going to win. I don’t think we have a pitcher that someone can come back on, and I think our defense is solid enough where we’re not going to allow a team to get too many runs in an inning.”

Magane did not allow a baserunner until Morningstar led off the fourth inning with a single. Kaitlyn Holly then attempted a bunt to move the runner over, but the third baseman Hutnyan made a diving grab for the first out. Magane then induced a strikeout and pop out to end the inning.

In the fifth inning, the Hillers again threatened but could not score. After two KP errors placed two Hopkinton runners in scoring position, Magane escaped the jam with another strikeout-pop out combination. Hopkinton had one final chance in the seventh inning, compiling back-to-back singles before Magane ended the game on her ninth strikeout of the night.

“Kali can be the equalizer,” Beauchemin said. “She has great location and she throws hard. She can keep batters off balance by moving the ball around.”

Magane has racked up nine strikeouts in each of her last two tournament starts, and her offense has supplied just enough production to secure the wins. Despite the stagnant offense, Beauchemin believes his team’s formula can still be successful going forward.

“[Magane] is as strong as a bull,” Beauchemin said. “We didn’t pitch her every game during the season. We tried to keep her strong for this time of the year, and hopefully it worked. Right now it seems to be working.”

It will be a quick turnaround for Magane and the Warriors, as they will face top-seeded Silver Lake on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Taunton High School in the D1 South Final, but Beauchemin is confident that his team will be ready.

“King Philip has a tradition, we don’t want to go down without a fight,” Beauchemin said. “The tradition is there, you have to honor it and you have to respect it. These girls do, they understand it.”

Magane Shuts Out Norwood, KP Advances to Quarters

PLAINVILLE, Mass. – King Philip seems to have Norwood’s number in the state tournament.

Behind a stellar performance from senior pitcher Kali Magane, 10 strikeouts and just three hits allowed, the Warriors beat Norwood 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Plainville Athletic League complex. It is the third time in four years that KP has ended the Mustangs’ season.

Magane was dominant in the circle on Saturday. She allowed a lead-off single off the centerfield fence to Taylor Reed in the second inning, but that was the lone hard hit ball. She struck out two in an inning four times and overpowered the Norwood hitters.

“There’s nobody better than her,” said KP coach Norm Beauchemin. “There weren’t too many balls hit hard.

“I’m glad that she went seven because it’s good for her endurance…she had to stay mentally tough for seven innings.”

The Mustangs did put together a rally in the fourth inning but a controversial call when Brianna Lacy caught the Norwood runner trying to steal third effectively ended the threat.

Norwood coach Carol Savino said, “That was a tough call over here because she was safe…That tag came after the base came out. That was a big call because that killed the rally.”

Magane allowed a runner to reach on a throwing error in the fifth but followed it with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. In the sixth, she allowed a one-out single but retired the final two hitters and then closed the game out in style by striking out a pair in the seventh to reach double digits for the game.

When asked what was working so well for her, Magane responded, “Just moving pitches around, keeping them off-balance. They’re a good hitting team, they’re coached well, so basically you have to try and keep them off-balance and limit the hits.”

Savino said, “Magane’s tough; Magane’s a good pitcher. If I had a pitcher like Magane on the mound for me and my defense, it would be different.”

The KP offense came through with a big second inning to give its pitcher a little cushion. Caeli Bench doubled down the left field line and Jenn Hutnyan (3-for-3) dropped a bloop into shallow left. With one out, Ashley Hession singled to right to plate the first run of the game.

Meghan Gorman lined to the second baseman for the second out but the Norwood player tried to turn it into a double play and the throw got away to allow a second run to score. Christa Wagner (2-for-3) drove in the third run with a bunt single.

Magane said, “It’s what you need is runs to win and it makes me more confident going into the circle.”

Beauchemin added, “When we didn’t score in the first, it was a little shocker for us. When we got the three runs, the thinking process changes drastically. You’re not trying to over-think the game anymore.”

KP tacked on a run in the fourth inning when Hutnyan lined a solo homer over the fence in center. The Warriors had a golden opportunity to add another in the fifth after Wagner tripled to lead-off the inning, but she was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to second.

In the sixth, the Warriors did add an insurance run. Sydney Phillips (who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the top half of the inning), Bench, and Hutnyan singled to start the inning and Magane brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to right.

With the win, KP advances to the Div. 1 South quarterfinal and a possible matchup with division rival Taunton (the Tigers played Somerset-Berkeley on Saturday night). Magane admitted the team was looking forward to another chance to face the Kelley-Rex champions, who won both regular season meetings with the Warriors.

She said with a smile, “We’re excited. We’re excited. We’ll try again.”

King Philip (19-4) will play next on Monday against the winner of Taunton/Somerset-Berkeley.

Ryan Hodgkins added three hits for Franklin, including a double, and scored a run. Sophomore Jake Noviello got the win on the mound, allowing a pair of runs in five innings of work, striking out seven. Ryan Morse had a scoreless inning in relief for the Panthers.

Milford, 3 @ Wayland, 2 – Final (8 inn.)

Oliver Ames, 2 vs. New Bedford, 1 – Final – With the game knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Oliver Ames senior Ryan Adams cracked an RBI triple to drive in Matt Muir as the Tigers edged the Whalers. Muir led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed over by Chris Romero, setting the stage for Adams’ hit. Sam Burr pitched four shutout winnings for the Tigers to get the win.

Sharon, 0 @ North Quincy, 4 – Final

Taunton, 0 @ Durfee, 1 – Final – Taunton freshman Jack Moynihan was terrific on the mound for the Tigers but was the tough luck loser as the Taunton offense was unable to get anything going. Moynihan pitched six innings, allowing just the one run while striking out five. Moynihan only allowed four base runners, three hits and one walk.

Foxboro, 9 @ Westwood, 13 – Final

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Franklin, 8 – Final

King Philip, 6 @ Dighton-Rehoboth, 4 – Final – King Philip’s Brooke Taute had a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh, breaking a tie game and giving the Warriors the win on the road. KP originally captured a 4-3 lead on a two-out, two-run single from Caeli Bench in the top of the fifth inning. Chris Wagner, Hailey McCasland, and Ashley Hession each had two hits for KP. Freshman Elise Pereira had an RBI bunt single in the game and battled for a hard fought walk in the seventh inning. Kali Magane for the win for KP, scattering six hits while fanning 12 batters.

North Attleboro, 5 @ Durfee, 2 – Final – Liz Morehouse knocked in a pair of runs with two hits and Amelia Murphy fanned seven batters as the Rocketeers picked up the win on the road. Mycala Moody and Meg Barlow each had three hits in the win and Gina Miceli added a pair of hits for Big Red.

Milford, 13 vs. Nipmuc, 16 – Final

Oliver Ames, 0 @ Franklin, 5 – Final – The Panthers picked up their 15th win of the season, winning four of the five matches in straight sets. Rahul Herur fought back at first singles after dropping to first set to get a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles, Eli Brooks won 6-2, 6-2 at second singles and Dan Barrow won 6-2, 6-4 at third singles. Tom Mancini and James Johnston won 6-0, 6-1 at first doubles and Tyler DiPalma and Derek Wu won 6-0, 6-1 at second singles.

North Attleboro, 5 vs. Durfee, 0 – Final – North Attleboro won all five matches in straight sets with two wins coming without a game lost. Mitchell Dyer won 6-1, 6-3 at first singles, Zack Pfeffer won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles and Barsomo Nuay won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. The team of Jake Fontes and Daniel Zhang won 6-1, 6-1 at first doubles and Andrew Harris and Mayank Wadeker won 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles.

Girls Tennis
Franklin, 2 @ Oliver Ames, 3 – Final – The Tigers punched their ticket to the postseason for the first time in over two decades behind a sweep in doubles play and one singles win. Sarah Leger won 7-5, 6-0 at third singles, Lark Warner and Valeria Tueme won 6-3, 6-0 at first singles and Claudia Ferrara and Rachel Stryke notched a 7-5, 6-1 at second doubles. Franklin’s Hannah Sweeney won 6-1, 6-0 at first singles and Anna Humphreys won 6-3, 6-1 at second singles.

North Attleboro, 5 @ Durfee, 0 – Final – The Rocketeers and Hilltoppers played 10 game prosets, with North Attleboro emerging victorious. Jordan Willis won 10-0 at first singles, Emily Chiasson won 10-0 at second singles and Azka Siddiq won 10-1 at third singles. Gabby Duva and Katie Demontigny won 10-6 at first doubles and Hana Hershey and Shurobhi Nandi won 10-3 at second doubles.

North Attleboro, 3 vs. Central Catholic, 6 – Final – North Attleboro was able to tie the game 2-2 through three innings but Central Catholic built a 6-2 lead by the seventh inning. John Brennan had an RBI single down the third base line and Zach DeMattio had an infield RBI grounder. Andy Katch capped North’s scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Papineau pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four earned runs in a solid outing for Big Red.

Softball
King Philip, 1 @ Newton North, 0 – Final – King Philip scored its lone run in the first inning and senior Kali Magane retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced, giving up a bunt single and striking out 14. Christa Wagner led off with a single, stole second and came home on an errant throw trying to get Elise Pereira out on a bunt play. Magane and Caeli Bench each had a hit while Meghan Gorman had two hits for the Warriors.

Oliver Ames, 1 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Mansfield senior Bri Homer scored what turned out to be the winning run in the second inning and tagged out what would have been the tying run in the top of the seventh. Homer took a relay throw from Jocelyn Reardon after a throw from Amanda Giambanco in right field. Homer was 2-2 on the day, following a walk from Liz Mackin in the second inning with a single. Marissa Staffier hit a two-run single down the right field line next to put the Hornets up. Maddie Letendre got the win on the mound, striking out eight while allowing four hits. For Oliver Ames, Jamie Gottwald was 1-2 with an RBI triple, Victoria Ziner went 2-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored and Caroline Mahoney had a double. Freshman Kayla Georgeu struck out five and allowed five hits in six innings of work.

North Attleboro, 2 vs. Bishop Feehan, 8 – Final – Abby Warren was able to keep the Shamrocks off balance for six innings but the away team plated six runs late. Kaylea Sherman went 2-3 with a pair of RBI and had an assist at the plate. Jordan Sharpe was 2-3 and Meg Barlow added a double for the Rocketeers.

Boys Lacrosse
Canton, 6 @ Dennis-Yarmouth, 3 – Final – Canton built a 2-0 lead after a quarter and held a 5-2 advantage by halftime. Dan Nadeau moved from his normal position in defense to play midfield and found the back of the net twice. Ben O’Neill led Canton’s offense with three goals and Ryan Lodge scored once.

Foxboro, 8 vs. Norwood, 3 – Final

King Philip, 8 @ Walpole, 15 – Final – King Philip rallied from a three goal deficit at halftime to knot the game at 7-7 but Walpole scored three straight goals in 67 seconds, stealing away the momentum and taking the win. Sam Agricola, Tim Watson, Harry Fallon and John DeLuca each scored twice for KP while Agricola, Collin DeVellis and Anthony Truini each had an assist.

Oliver Ames, 10 @ Whitman-Hanson, 9 – Final (2OT) – Senior attack Matt Gilson took a feed from Owen Gallagher in the second overtime and scored his fifth goal of the game to give Oliver Ames the win. Gilson’s five goals were complemented by a pair of goals and assists from Gallagher, two goals from Eric LeBlanc and a goal from senior Aidan Connly. Senior Jake Aronson made 17 saves in the cage for Oliver Ames.

Taunton, 8 @ Attleboro, 4 – Final – Taunton senior Charles Hearrold III earned the win on the mound, tossing five innings with just one earned run, three hits and two walks allowed. Hearrold III also paced the Tigers at the plate with a pair of hits and a pair of RBI. Luke Figueira and Matt Machado each had a pair of hits for the Tigers as well. Max Bowden knocked in a pair of runs and sophomore Joe Manchester had one RBI.

Oliver Ames, 3 @ Canton, 8 – Final – Senior Griffin Jerrier stole the show on the mound for Canton, striking out nine in a complete game effort, scattering six hits and only allowing two earned runs. Mike McMahon (double, RBI) and Joe Bires (run) both had a pair of hits for Canton while Jim Jenkins and Sean Doyle each knocked in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs. For Oliver Ames, sophomore Matt Muir had two hits.

Milford, 5 @ Foxboro, 6 – Final – Foxboro’s Jesse Galanti connected for a two run single, turning a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning and the Warriors were able to hold on. Nick Wright picked up his third save of the season, pitching a scoreless top half of the seventh inning. Andrew Block tossed six innings for the win for Foxboro. Aaron Wentling pitched in with a team-best three hits while Darren Kelly and Wright each had two hits for the Warriors.

Mansfield, 1 @ Franklin, 12 – Final – The Panthers’ offense roared to life with all nine players in the lineup getting either a hit or scoring a run. Nick Santucci and Ryan Hodgkins each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI for Franklin while Josh Macchi knocked in four runs and had a double. Jake Lyons, Mike Skaza, Jason Ulrickson and Alex Bissanti each had an RBI for Franklin as well. Ulrickson got the win on the mound for Franklin, tossing six innings with just two hits allowing and four strikeouts. Classmate Matt Foley closed the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

North Attleboro, 0 @ King Philip, 2 – Final – Jack DiCenso tossed a complete game shutout for the Warriors, scattering five hits while striking out six in the win. King Philip scored both of its runs in the first inning. After Kyle Guenthner walked, junior Will Weir plated him with an RBI double. Weir then came around to score on a single from DiCenso.

Sharon, 2 @ Stoughton, 4 – Final – Nico Parmeggiani threw a complete game for Stoughton, scattering five hits with only one walk and seven strikeouts to earn the win. Stoughton broke the tie game open with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sharon sophomore Max Tarlin had his second straight strong start for the Eagles, going 5 2/3 with five strikeouts and two earned runs, while allowing just two hits. Junior catcher Jake Marglous had a two RBI single for the Eagles.

Softball
Attleboro, 0 @ Taunton, 9 – Final – Aimee Kistner (four innings, win) and Courtney Fisher (three innings) combined to throw a four-hit shutout and totaled 12 strikeouts in the win. Kya Enos had two hits, including a two-run home run while Jordan Wade had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI, Meghan Navarro had a triple and two RBI and Liana Duarte had a pair of hits for the Tigers.

Canton, 1 @ Oliver Ames, 8 – Final – Oliver Ames freshman pitcher Kayla Georgeu only allowed three hits, striking out four in a complete game effort. Missy Krim went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and had one stolen base, Jamie Gottwald was 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored, Victoria Ziner was 2-3 with a pair of RBI and Katie Pursley (1-2) knocked in a pair of runs for the Tigers and also scored a run. Also for the Tigers, Katie Mills (1-1) knocked in Jordyn Leite (1-1, double).

Mansfield, 2 @ Franklin, 0 – Final – Mansfield senior pitcher Maddie Letendre kept the Panthers at bay, allowing just four hits while striking out seven. Freshman Megan Letendre paced the offense with three hits while junior Liz Mackin socked a pair of hits. Mady Bendanillo (RBI) and Amanda Giambanco each had a hit for the Hornets. Mansfield cashed in for both of their runs in the fifth inning with Bendanillo single knocking in Megan Letendre and Maddie Letendre knocking in Bendanillo.

King Philip, 6 @ North Attleboro, 5 – Final – After having just one hit through five innings, North Attleboro rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. But King Philip sophomore Elise Pereira’s solo home run to lead off the seventh inning proved to be the difference. Kali Magane came in and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to preserve the win for the Warriors. After KP scored two runs in both the second and fifth innings, North Attleboro used a grand slam from Kaylea Sherman to tie the game in the sixth. Christa Wagner, Pereira, Magane, Brooke Taute and Meghan Gorman all had two hits for KP. Mycala Moody and Gina Miceli each had a pair of hits for the Rocketeers.

Stoughton, 5 @ Sharon, 1 – Final – Stoughton’s Shannon Flaherty tossed a complete game without surrendering an earned run. Flaherty also struck out nine while issuing three walks. Jeni D’Andrea, Gina Caraffa, Karly Estramera, Sam Tullis and Flaherty each had hits for the Black Knights.

Boys Lacrosse
Attleboro, 6 @ Oliver Ames, 8 – Final – Oliver Ames senior attack Matt Gilson scored four goals and sophomore attack Eric LeBlanc added a pair of goals for the Tigers.

Canton, 14 @ Milford, 1 – Final – Jack Dillon, Matt Mackay and Dan Cohen all scored their first career goals in the win for the Panthers. Dylan Cunningham had a pair of saves in a shutout fourth quarter in the cage. Canton head coach Bill Bendell said DJ Trerice played well at midfield and both Brian Albert and George Kent played great defense.

King Philip, 11 @ Sharon, 9 – Final – King Philip overcame from a four goal deficit at halftime and a three minute locked in penalty to start the fourth quarter to beat the Eagles. Sharon held a 3-0 lead after a quarter and a 5-1 lead at the break. Sharon led 7-5 going into the final quarter but an illegal stick forced KP into a man down situation for three minutes locked in. KP senior Steven Eaton kept the Warriors rolling, setting up a pair of man-down goals for KP to tie the game less than halfway through the final quarter. Junior Tim Watson scored one of his three goals with just 2:51 left to put KP up 10-8. After KP pulled within one, Eaton iced the game with a goal with 15 seconds left. Watson finished with three goals and four assists while Sam Agricola found the back of the net four times. Harry Fallon scored twice and had one assist, Anthony Truini scored once and Michael Curtin had one assist for KP. Junior goalie Paul Macrina notched 13 of his 21 saves in the second half for KP.

North Attleboro, 4 @ Mansfield, 11 – Final – Mansfield senior defenseman Josh Schafer set the tone early for the Hornets, going coast to coast and finding the back of the net for the first goal of the game and Mansfield held a 4-1 lead at the halftime break. The Hornets continued the attack with a 7-3 second half. Ryan Smith scored three goals and had an assist and Jon Reed found the back of the net twice for Mansfield. Connor Finerty, Billy Grant (two assists), Jarrett Saunders, Hunter Ferreira (assist) and Sam O’Connell each scored once for Mansfield.

Taunton, 4 vs. New Bedford, 9 – Final

Girls Lacrosse

Milford, 3 @ Canton, 17 – Final – Mary Nee found the back of the net four times for the Bulldogs.

Franklin, 13 @ Foxboro, 8 – Final – Franklin senior goalie Dani Lonati made 11 saves to hold off the Davenport division leading Warriors. Franklin’s Julia Jette scored three goals and had two assists while Kendall Reardon had two goals and three assists and Emily Spath found the back of the net three times.

Mansfield, 10 @ North Attleboro, 19 – Final – Hana Caster led the Rocketeers with five goals and five assists, while sophomore Mackenzie Rosenberg added six goals for North. Brooke Ebert played well in goal, according to North coach Mike Vitelli.

Taunton, 5 @ New Bedford, 8 – Final – Taunton goalie Lorna Li made 20 saves in the cage for the Tigers but the Whalers were able to get the close win. Abbey Kingman scored twice and Kayla Phillips, Lindsay Sneyd and Riana Winslow each scored once for Taunton while Annie Tate had an assist.

Boys Tennis
Taunton, 3 @ Attleboro, 2 – Final – The Tigers got a pair of wins in singles play and clinched the win with a win at first doubles. Freshman Brett Beaulieu won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles for Taunton and Mike Briggs picked up a 6-0, 6-1 at third singles. The team of Connor Briggs and Charlie Fiske won 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 at first doubles for the Tigers. Attleboro’s Timothy Vermilyea won 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 at second doubles and the team of Shaun Gordon and Gaashaan Yusuf won 6-3, 6-0 at second doubles for the Bombardiers.

Franklin, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final – Franklin got a clean sweep at doubles and freshman Dan Barrow won at third singles to secure a win for the Panthers. North Attleboro, 3 @ King Philip, 2 – Final – King Philip’s Cole Ginter won at first singles, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-4 and the team of Justin Rohan and Marco DiStefano won 6-4, 6-4 at second doubles.

Sharon, 5 @ Stoughton, 0 – Final – Sharon freshman Danujan Thirumavalavan picked up a 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, sophomore Andre Olivei won 6-1, 6-1 at second dingles and senior Andrew Tarnoff swept 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. Sophomore Russell Rapaport and freshman Max Brody teamed up for a 6-0, 6-2 win at first doubles for the Eagles and junior Sharov Mikhail and senior Jing Huang won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles.

Attleboro, 0 @ Taunton, 5 – Final – It was a clean sweep for the Tigers, who won in straight sets in each match. Jordan Paglica won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, Olivia Sweeney won 6-1, 6-4 at second singles and Kelsey Hebert won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles for the Tigers. The team of Ashleigh Eason and Emily Moor won 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles for Taunton and Caroline Hebert and Jillian Pagliuca won 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles.

Canton, 3 @ Oliver Ames, 2 – Final – Canton got wins at first and second singles as well as first doubles to get the win. Tiffany Ha and Sarah MacQuarrie picked up their third win in as many days, notching a 6-0, 6-1 win at first doubles. Carly Scanlon won 6-0, 6-1 at first singles and Skyler Jabbour won via forfeit (injury) at second singles. OA’s Sarah Leger won 6-3, 7-6 at third singles and Rachel Stryke and Claudia Ferrera won 6-2, 6-3 at second doubles.

Foxboro, 5 @ Milford, 0 – Final

Mansfield, 3 @ Franklin, 2 – Final – Mansfield swept both doubles matches and got a win from sophomore Sarah Doyle at third singles to edge the Panthers. Doyle won 6-0, 6-3 at third singles while Cathryn Heavey and Chloe Peters won 6-1, 6-3 at first doubles. The team of freshmen Tessa Garufi and Elizabeth Elsner took a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win at second doubles to help clinch the win for the Hornets. Franklin’s Anna Humphreys won 7-6, 7-6 at first singles and junior Anja Deric won 6-0, 6-2 at second singles for the Panthers.
