Taunton senior Malachi Johnson has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Sept. 19 through Sept. 25. Johnson is the third player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year.
Johnson has been one of Taunton’s most dynamic offensive players during the team’s perfect 3-0 start, despite the Tigers having to be on the road for all three weeks. He has scored two touchdowns in each of the last two games and one in the season opener. His two rushing touchdowns on Friday night helped the Tigers earn a 24-13 win over Middleboro in their toughest matchup of the seasons so far.
“We had a very balanced game plan going in and felt we could run the ball on Middleboro,” said Taunton head coach Brad Sidwell. “Malachi and Bryan Baprista, our two backs, both had good days. Our linemen kept getting stronger and we felt that Malachi would break a long run which he did at the beginning of the fourth quarter.”
In the opening game against New Bedford, Johnson impacted the game on special teams, responding to the Whalers’ only touchdown by returning the ensuing kick 86 yards for a Taunton score. The following week against Durfee, Johnson capped the first half with a 15-yard touchdown and added a 60-yard score on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. This week, Johnson rushed for 167 yards on 19 carries and another two touchdowns. He punched one in from a yard out in the second quarter to regain the lead for the Tigers and in the fourth quarter he broke a 52-yard run that gave Taunton the two-score lead it held to the final whistle.
