Oliver Ames junior Katie Sobieraj has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for Oct. 23 through Oct. 29. Sobieraj is the eighth player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year.
Sobieraj completed an impressive junior season by winning the individual title at the annual Hockomock Cross-Country Championships on Saturday morning at the Wrentham Development Center. Led by Sobieraj, Oliver Ames also won the team title with 26 points, well ahead of second-place Franklin, which finished with 60.
“Katie was the top runner in the Hockomock League all season,” said OA coach Kyle Sousa. “She has worked incredibly hard to get where she is, establishing herself as one of the elite runners in the state. But Katie is really all about the team. She is so invested in the success of her teammates. Needless to say, it puts the team in a great position when you’re taking first place every meet. But it also puts your team in a great position when your top individual has a team-first attitude.”
On a cool day in Wrentham, Sobieraj dominated the race from start to finish, completing the circuit in a time of 17:54.5. Sobieraj finished more than a minute ahead of the second-place runner. She beat her time from 2021 (19:14.2) by nearly 90 seconds and her time from 2020 as a freshman (20:24.83) by 2-1/2 minutes. In her three years at the league meet, Sobieraj has gone from third place to second to now winning the title.
