Mansfield junior Hunter Ferreira has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 2nd through April 8th. Ferreira is the 25th athlete selected for the 2016-2017 school year and the first selection during the spring season. He is the first lacrosse player and second Mansfield athlete to be selected this school year.
Ferreira had an impressive first week of the spring season, helping the Hornets to big wins over Attleboro and Stoughton. The junior midfielder paced the offense in both games, scoring a total of 11 goals and recording six assists as the Hornets started the season 2-0.
“He definitely had a monster week, especially only playing six quarters,” said Mansfield head coach Tim Frias. “I just hope he can do that against all of the Hockomock teams.”
In the first game of the season, Ferreira was a huge part of the offense, factoring in on all but one of Mansfield’s goals. He found the back of the net eight times and added three assists for the Hornets, who walked away from Tozier-Cassidy Field with a 12-5 win over the Bombardiers.
Two days later, Ferreira and the Hornets opened their home slate with a game against Stoughton. It marked the Black Knights’ first ever varsity game. Ferreira netted three goals and three assists as Mansfield picked up a convincing 15-1 win.
The Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, is selected by the HockomockSports.com staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at midnight. There may be a poll posted on every Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
