Player of the Week: Lauren Eby, Attleboro Softball

Attleboro senior Lauren Eby has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 29 through June 4. Eby is the 31st player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and ninth in the spring season.

Eby came through with her best day at the plate this season to lift Attleboro to a come from behind win over Andover in the Div. 1 Round of 32 at Drummond St. Field. The Bombardiers fell behind early, but Eby hit a pair of homer runs, her first of the season, and drove in five to send Attleboro cruising into the Sweet Sixteen for the second year in a row.

Andover had the upset on its mind when it showed up on Sunday morning and the visitors took an early lead with a three-run homer in their first at-bat. Eby helped settled Attleboro’s nerves in the bottom half of the inning. After Lily Routhier reached on a two-out infield single, Eby crushed a pitch over the fence in right center to cut the lead to just one. The score stayed the same until the third when Eby stepped up again, this time smacking a three-run homer to straight away center that put the Bombardiers ahead 5-3, a lead they would never relinquish. Those homers sparked an offensive explosion for Attleboro, which scored 13 straight runs and rolled to a 17-4 win. Eby finished with four hits, two homers, four runs scored, and five RBI.

Player of the Week: Ryan Sarney, Oliver Ames Track

Oliver Ames senior Ryan Sarney has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 22 through May 28. Sarney is the 30th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and eighth in the spring season.

Sarney added a state title to his resume over the weekend, taking first place in the two-mile at the Div. 3 meet, which was held at Fitchburg State University. His one-two finish with teammate Brendan Thomas helped the Tigers claim third place in the team standings with 45 points, finishing behind only Westboro and Duxbury.

“At the D3 state meet, Ryan took command of the two mile very early, and set an aggressive pace through the first mile, but where he really won it was over the final two laps where he just kept finding gears until at last he broke away on the final straightaway,” said OA coach Kyle Sousa. “It was an all-time race for Ryan and for our program, and a testament to Ryan’s four years of incredible determination.”

The top three runners in the two-mile all recorded times better than the previous meet record (and were 16 seconds faster than the next group of runners). Sarney just beat out Thomas at the line, finishing in a time of 9:06.68 to win by .19 seconds. It was his second straight D3 title, as he bettered his time from 2022 by 18 seconds. At the annual Hockomock Championship meet, held last week at Foxboro High, Sarney took first in the 800 meters and second, behind Thomas, in the one mile. He also was the closing leg of OA’s first place 4×800 relay team. OA finished second as a team at the Hock meet, just seven points behind Attleboro.

Player of the Week: Lily Deforge, Franklin Track

Franklin junior Lily Deforge has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 15 through May 21. Deforge is the 29th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and seventh in the spring season.

In miserable conditions this Saturday at the annual Hockomock Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sam Berns Community Field, Deforge continued her impressive career as one of the league’s top throwers. She took won the title in the discus and finished third in the shot put, helping the Panthers add to their Kelley-Rex crown by winning the team title at the league meet. Franklin finished with 155 points, which was more than 60 points higher than second place Oliver Ames.

Lily has been the leader of our throwers since her sophomore year,” said Franklin coach Mark Rudolph. “Her dedication to her team and her competitiveness shined through at Hocks this year. She competed with a badly sprained ankle which limited her preparing this week and then had to deal with the bad weather, but she delivered by repeating as Hock Champion in the discus and taking third in the shot put. She’s already qualified for Divisionals, the MA meet of champions, New Englands, and Nationals, so she still has a lot of throwing left this season.”

The athletes had to put up with rain and wind on Saturday. During the girls’ discus finals, competitors were wiping down the throwing circle before each attempt. Once it was time for the shot put final, they were pushing the water away with brooms. Deforge and the other throwers were able to overcome the conditions. She retained her title in the discus with a throw of 111’-10”, more than nine feet further than teammate Liz Hopkins and just a few inches shorter than her first place throw from 2022. In the shot put, Deforge’s throw of 33’-05.00” was good for third, behind Stoughton’s Simarah McPherson (36’-01.00”) and Hopkins (33’-07.75”).

Player of the Week: Damien Carter, Milford Baseball

Milford junior Damien Carter has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 8 through May 14. Carter is the 28th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and sixth in the spring season.

Carter starred at the plate and on the mound last week for the Hawks, helping them pick up three wins, including a pair of wins in the division. He had six hits over the three games, including three triples and a homer, scored nine runs, and drove in six others. Carter also picked up the win as the starting pitcher on Friday. Those wins clinched a playoff berth for the Hawks (11-5), who are currently in the top 10 in the Div. 1 power rankings.

“Damien played a huge part in a three-win week for our team,” said Milford coach Alex Dion. “He has given us a huge lift offensively and has continued to get better and better on the mound. He is a great kid whose hard work is really paying off. He is a fun player to watch.”

The week started with a big win over Oliver Ames. Carter tripled and scored three times, helping the Milford offense rack up 11 runs on the day. On Wednesday night, Carter sparked the Milford offense in a 7-0 win over Attleboro. He went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and three runs scored. Two days later at North Attleboro, Carter was even better. He was 3-for-4, added another triple, smacked a home run, drove in five, and scored three times as the Hawks overcame an early deficit to win 10-3. Carter picked up the win on the mound too. He allowed three runs (just one earned) in the first two innings but then shut out the Rocketeers over the next five, striking out eight in the complete game victory. For the season, Carter is batting 0.327 with 16 hits and 18 runs scored.

Taunton senior Ava Venturelli has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 1 through May 7. Venturelli is the 27th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and fifth in the spring season.

Venturelli continued to shine at the plate for the Tigers this week, as they earned two big statement wins over league and Division 1 rivals. The Louisville-commit blasted three homers in two games, helping Taunton pick up a home win against King Philip and a dominant road win over Bishop Feehan (two teams that had been ranked above the Tigers in D1).

Wednesday night was a showdown between the top two teams in the league and it didn’t disappoint. Venturelli gave Taunton the early edge against KP by going yard twice and supplying all three RBI. In the first inning, she belted one over the center field fence to make it 2-0 and, in her second at bat, Venturelli crushed a pitch that was out of the strike zone high up into the trees in left for an important insurance run. On Saturday, she was at it again with two hits, including another homer, against Feehan as part of a 9-0 romp for the Tigers.

Foxboro senior Mya Waryas has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 24 through April 30. Waryas is the 26th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and fourth in the spring season.

Waryas had a big week for the Warriors, recording 16 points, including the 100th goal of her career, as Foxboro rolled to three more wins, improving to 9-1 on the season. Waryas scored six times and dished out 10 assists in the week, as Foxboro inches closer to an 11th straight league title. The Warriors are currently second in the league in goals scored and in fewest goals allowed, behind only Franklin in both categories.

“Mya has always been one of our most dynamic and unselfish attackers,” said Foxboro coach Kathleen McCullough. “She’s continuously looking to set others up and be the spark when we need her.”

On Monday, Foxboro kicked off a busy week with a solid non-league win over Hopkinton. Waryas led the way with seven points, scoring a pair of goals and setting up five others in the 15-8 victory. A day later, Foxboro beat Milford 16-3 and Waryas was a major part of it again, adding a goal and a pair of helpers. The Warriors kept rolling on Thursday in their first varsity game against Stoughton. Waryas had a hat trick of goals and assists, including the 100th goal of her career.

Mansfield senior Ryan DeGirolamo has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 17 through April 23. DeGirolamo is the 25th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and third in the spring season.

DeGirolamo had a busy and successful week in goal for the Davenport-leading Hornets. He helped Mansfield finish 2-1 in the annual Chowda Cup, picking up wins against Scituate and Hanover, while recording 20-plus saves in both games. The Hornets are currently 4-0 in the league and already have wins against three of their division rivals, putting them one game up in the Davenport standings.

“Ryan is the heart and soul of a young defensive group that’s returning one starter; he is loud in cage and tracks the ball,” said Mansfield head coach Tim Frias. His play this season has really kept us in our close games.”

The Hornets opened the Chowda Cup with a tough loss to Falmouth despite DeGirolamo turning away 13 shots. Two days later, Mansfield rebounded with a solid 10-8 win against Scituate, which was a top four seed in Div. 2 last year. DeGirolamo was instrumental in the Hornets coming out on top, making 22 saves to keep the Sailors at bay. On Saturday, DeGirolamo contributed on both ends of the field, as the Hornets pulled out another 10-8 victory, this time over Hanover, a 2022 Div. 3 state semifinalist. North Attleboro senior Kelly Colleran has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 10 through April 16. Colleran is the 24th player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and second in the spring season.

Few players are going to have weeks as dominant as the one that the reigning Hockomock League MVP and HockomockSports.com Player of the Year just had. Colleran went 3-0, striking out 63 batters in just 25 innings, walking only four, and tossing a pair of shutouts. At the plate, the BU-commit added six hits, four walks, and three homers, keeping North right in the mix for the Kelley-Rex title.

After a hard-fought, 2-1 loss to defending state champ Taunton (in which Colleran struck out 19, tying her own program-record for most strikeouts in a seven-inning game), North had an 11-inning marathon with Mansfield on Monday. Colleran struck out 28 Hornets, going the distance to pick up the win. On Wednesday, Colleran tied her seven-inning record for the second time in three games, striking out 19 in a 7-0 win over Milford. Batting lead-off, she also went 1-for-2 with two walks, a homer, three runs scored, and a pair of RBI. To close out the week, Colleran needed 80 pitches to earn her second shutout, this time striking out 16 in an 8-0 win against Canton. She also hit a pair of homers, driving in half of North’s runs on the afternoon.

Franklin senior Alfred Mucciarone has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 3 through April 9. Mucciarone is the 23rd player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and first in the spring season.

Mucciarone aced his opening outing of the season, allowing only an unearned run over five innings against Oliver Ames, helping Franklin get off to a winning start. The Div. 1 runners-up went 2-0 last week, outscoring their two opponents 22-1.

Coming off a junior season in which he had a solid 2.33 ERA and was instrumental in Franklin’s run to the state title game, the UMass Lowell-commit was dealing in his first start of the season. Mucciarone faced jut two over the minimum in his five innings, allowing only two hits and the one unearned run, to pick up the win. He dominated the strike zone, throwing 49 of his 68 pitches for strikes, and he finished with 10 strikeouts.

Mansfield junior Eddie McCoy has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for March 7 through March 13. McCoy is the 22nd player chosen as Player of the Week for the 2022-23 school year and 10th in the winter season.

McCoy has been instrumental in the shorthanded Hornets making a run to the Div. 2 state title game. He scored 20-plus points in each of the last three rounds, including a career-high in the Sweet Sixteen against Salem, helping No. 2 Mansfield overcome injuries to a pair of starters and still reach the championship game.

“Eddie’s been showing little glimpses all year but he’s taking over games and doing it in the flow [of the offense],” said Mansfield head coach Mike Vaughan. “He’s not forcing action, he’s not trying to do it all, he’s allowing his teammates to contribute. He’s stepped in and made big plays over and over the last couple of weeks.”

In the Sweet Sixteen against Salem, McCoy caught fire, scoring a career-high 31 points, almost half of Mansfield’s total of 64, while picking up seven steals, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. McCoy added 22 points, on four three-pointers, against Marblehead in the quarterfinal, another big win for the Hornets. In the semifinal against Nahoba, McCoy powered the Mansfield offense again. He scored 28 points, grabbed four rebounds, and had three steals to propel the Hornets to a 20-point win. McCoy’s scoring push has helped Mansfield win by at least 20 in each playoff game.
